Nigeria: call for end of LGBT (lesbians gays bisexuals and transexuals) discrimination on the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia

Wed, May 20, 2009

NIGERIA 18 May 2009: Two non-governmental organisations in Lagos urged the three tiers of government to stop discriminating against homosexuals, lesbians and gay people. Officials of The Independent Project for Equal Rights (TIPER) and The International Centre for Sexual Reproductive Rights (INCRESE) made the appeal at a news briefing. They explained that the briefing was part of their preparation for Sunday’s celebration of the annual International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO). They regretted that discrimination on the basis of age, gender, sexual orientation and gender identity had become a major concern for human rights organisations in Nigeria. Mrs Dorothy Aken Ova, Executive Director of INCRESE urged the protection of the fundamental rights of homosexuals and lesbians. She also urged the enlightenment of Nigerians to enable them to realise that gays had a right to life. “Research findings have shown that four per cent of the world population is gay and should be recognised by government through adequate representation, good education and acceess to the basic necessities of life. These people, though in the minority, did not create themselves. They should, therefore, enjoy the right to live their lives. The public must learn to respect them for who they are because if we begin to feel bad for one another, we will be calling for the destruction of some people, thus inviting genocide” she said.

Ova noted that homosexuals, lesbians and the gay formed part of the electorate that voted for the various governments, charging them to take care of them. She urged the Federal Government to domesticate the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). Mr Joseph Akoro, an Executive Director of TIPER, also urged the Federal Government to consider its commitment to the protection of all Nigerians from all forms of discrimination. He said the NGOs were collaborating to create awareness about the existence of gays in the country. Mr Victor Ogbodo, a member of the NGO, said the society would benefit more from accepting them. “If they are accepted by the public for what they are, there will be less marital problems because members of the opposite sex will have known before getting married to them. But if the society fails to accept them now and the issue begins to rear its head after marriage, we may only just be postponing the evil day,” he said.

Ogbodo charged the government to protect the rights of all its citizens since the fundamental human rights of all Nigerians were enshrined in Chapter IV of the 1999 Constitution. He said that the groups were not considering sponsoring any bill at the National Assembly on the issue for now, “but we will begin to kick against any further restriction on our rights. “In future, should the need arise for us to sponsor a bill on their behalf, we will surely do so” he added.

i can't believe we still have useless nd inresponsible leaders in dis country,no doubt about that that dis pple dat want to respect them 4 whom they are are also gay or lesbian but may almighty alllah punish them 4rm dis minutes, every minutes, every seconds, every hour will they be curse by the angels of God for supporting this...............shit.
Hello everyone,
I enjoyed reading ur replies. very illuminating, I must say, but from a conceited point of view, I dare say.... Hey, for all the religion loving, bible or koran preaching brothers and sisters, I have one word. God, in fact did create LGBTs, and as someone fully indoctrinated as a Christian, Jesus reduced the ten commandments to Loving ur God, and loving ur neighbour....

During the time of Jesus, there was a law that those who commited adultery be stoned to death. A woman who 'did it' was brought to him for judgment... There was a law for those who did what the woman did those days.... BUT GUESS HOW REPLIED.... Check the bible, - John 8

Now, that LGBT person, no matter how you despise him or her is ur NEIGHBOUR... So, recheck ur statements and feelings cos loving him oe her is the real test and challenge.... May God help us all...
mr. agbro,
it was not as if Jesus patted the woman on the back and said welldone.
Jesus said, go and sin no more. that means the condition for her forgiveness is to stop the evil.
these LGBT (or jibiti) want to continue in this sacrilageous acts for life.
how can they be forgiven.
as i said in my own reaction, one day one of them will bring a cow to the church and ask the pastor to wed them (they are a;lready doing unimaginable things with animals). i'm sure you will still tell me to respect their feelings.
the bottom line is, they have derailed emotionally and mentally. they must be stopped.
there is no limit to forgiveness; if Jesus died on the cross to provide us with unlimited salvation, who are you to put a limit on forgiveness. chances are you can be christ like and be the one to tell them "to go and sin no more".
TANS CHARLES FOR THIS BLOG.
GROWING UP AS A CHILD FROM A REMOTE VILLAGE I FOLLOW MY MOTHER TO THE CHURCH EVERY SUNDAY IN THE BELIVE THAT ONE DAY I SHALL PASS SAME TO MY CHILDREN. LOW AND BEHOLD, JUST WHEN I THOUGHT I WAS LEARNING CAME THE ACT THAT THERE IS RIGHT TO FREEDOM OF WORSHIP. MOTHER WEPT, FATHER CRIED BUT BEING AN ALDULT WE DECIDED TO FOLLOW OUR OWN RELIGION.
THE RIGHT TO THIS AND THAT ........... WITHOUT ROOM FOR ITS EFFECT FOR GENERATIONS YET UNBORN IS NOT ONLY GOING TO CREATE ROOM FOR MORE PROBLEMS THAN SOLUTIONS IT WILL KILL OUR CONTINUITY
MY QUESTION TO Ogbodo, Doherty and Joseph is simple "can you practice what you preach or do you preach and allowe others to expore your crazy innovation for you? how many of them will be happy to see there son in love with a man and be happy. I TELL YOU MY GOOD PEOLPE WHEN A CORPSE THAT HAS NO REATIONSHIP WITH YOU PASSES YOU SEE IT AS LOG OF WOOD BUT ASK THE BEREAVED THE EFFECT AND TEARS WILL TELL YOU THE PAIN IN LOSING A LOVED ONE.
THE IDEA IN THIS IS SIMPLE WE ARE GRADUALLY LOSING OUR LOVED ONCE TO THIS UNREALISTIC NIGERIAN WHO EXTORT MONEY RUNING NGOS THAT ARE NOT FUTURE PRODUCTIVE. NGO SHOULD BE A REFLECTION OF HUMAN CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT,POVERTY ERADICATION,...........
LETS LIVE THE WHITE TO DO THERE THING FOR WE HAVE ENOUGH PROBLEM WITH ENERGY, HUNGER, POOR EDUCATION ....... TO DEAL WITH.
EVIL IS EVIL. LET US ALL LEARN TO DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN THE SEED FOR PLANTING AND A GRAIN FOR CONSUMPTION, THERE YIELD CAN NEVER BE THE SAME.
TANS
quit agree with u
one day these people will bring a horse to the alter and ask the pastor to wed them because already they are commiting all these sacrilage with animals. that time maybe these useless NGOs will tell us to respect their feelings.
i feel like vomiting if i even imagine these descendants of soddom and gomorrah.
any known gay should be castrated and for the lesbos, their thing should be sealed so far as they don't want to use it fo the purpose it was created.
dammned them all.
Na wao 4 sum people, not even animals is thinking towards that direction please for God sake is time for our leaders to place a law and stop this stupid act. As a matter of fact any body that may even think of that is not worthy of living.
God hate them, this is bullshit.
Mrs Dorothy Akin Ova you better leave your husband and join lesbian club, that will make me understand you better, don,t stay in your husband's house and send Innocent Nigerians to hell, this goes to all the lesbians and homosexuals that it is appointed unto man or woman once to die but after that Judgment, remember God created man to get woman for wife but not man to man or woman to woman. I am in opinion that such people be burn to ashes
thank
I am Mr H O Idoko
Is that the track of development Nigeria needs? Gay people should get inside the bedroom and lock themselves up. Maybe relocate to sodom and shoot pornography. Gay is not ethical and moral to our universe-earth. No one should confuse it with religion. It's not a religious matter. Its social; and by environmental factors, upheld/refused by religions for the purpose of advancing sociatal morality. Nobody is against the fundamental human rights of gay people. Am sure one of such rights is not a right to coerce others into gay beliefs. I'm sure that we shall rise up to the intolorance of the gay people sooner than later. They are begining to perpetrate hate; and that will only backfire on them. Sure! They will attract exactly what their thoughts project.
Bunch of crap.
