"Tigress" Woods, Tiger's niece and New Cat from the woods Family qualifies for Women's US Open

She may be known to most as "Tiger Woods's niece," but Cheyenne Woods is doing her best to banish the tag after turning professional.

Woods, who went pro less than a fortnight ago after playing four years of golf at Wake Forest University, where she won the 2011 ACC Championship, is already making her mark.

She travelled to a US Women's Open qualifier in North Carolina and finished in a share of the lead to book her place.

The 21-year-old posted rounds of 74-72 to take co-medalist honours in the two-day qualifier at Carolina Trace Country Club.

"Qualified for the US Women's Open!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" tweeted Woods.

The performance is remarkable given that Woods has yet to compete in a professional event. She will only make her debut at the Wegmans LPGA Championship next week, having been given an exemption to compete by sponsors.

In her amateur career she built a reputation by triumphing in more than 30 tournaments.

Tiger, now 36 years old, has dominated golf to win 14 Majors, but has struggled to recapture his best form since well-publicised personal issues and injuries over the last couple of years.

He is related to Cheyenne through his half-brother Earl Woods Jr, who is Cheyenne's father.

Like Tiger, her first golfing mentor was his father (her grandfather), Earl Woods Sr. She held her first club in his garage, and he was an influence in her junior career until he died in 2009.

"I only got a chance to go out on the golf course with him a couple of times," Woods said. "But I think a few putting tips he's given me, I always keep those in mind."

Cheyenne and Tiger also share an agent, Mark Steinberg, who tipped Woods for greatness.

"We are excited about the opportunity to represent Cheyenne," Steinberg said. "She had an outstanding career at Wake Forest and has the chance to be a major star on the women's golf scene."

Tiger shot a round of 70 at the Memorial tournament yesterday to end the day four shots behind the leader at the latest US PGA Tour event - but it's fair to say he wasn't the most successful golfer of the day in his family.

Slim chance she would have ever been a golfer without the family influence. See what exposure can do for a person?
