Take your pick between Anelka and Didier Drogba who is the ideal striker for Chelsea baring in mind the formation the club is keen on playing, personally despite his sometimes layed back game i prefer Anelka because he is for a classic centre forward and if his psychology can be worked on he could do a lot more, comeon if he can score goals for an average club like bolton thnk what he could do with adequate encouragement and morale boost for CHELSEA,no offense to the Ivorian but he's past his prime for me

»Comments (59) Print This Story Send To A Friend Contact Us galleria zoom Whilst the tastier of the groups drawn in Monaco on the 28th of August would have been D, F and H, Group A still grants Bordeaux fans some interesting away fixtures: London; Rome; and Cluj-Napoca in Romania.

None of which will be particularly easy, and Girondins will be given a baptism of fire as they face the trickiest tie on Tuesday night, having to deal with a task of stealing a point or more from a ground that is notoriously hard to salvage even your pride.

Especially when you are facing a Chelsea side that are playing free-flowing, on-the-floor, attack-minded, samba-influenced, easy-on-the-eye football.

There's no bones about it... Chelsea are on form, look dangerous, and the purchase of Deco together with Jose Bosingwa - under the tutelage of World Cup winning coach Luiz Felipe Scolari - has seen the Stamford Bridge side go from strength to strength.

Bordeaux too have been playing admirably in the French league despite their mid-table standing. They qualified for the Champions League outright last campaign and were only four points off crowned champions Olympique Lyonnais.

The weekend's clash against Marseille started at a good pace and key player Chamakh continued his good form by netting Girondins' solitary goal.

Bordeaux's forward line of Cavenaghi, Chamakh, Wendel and Gourcuff all feed off each other well enough and drift in and out of position.

Considering that Chelsea do a similar thing with Lampard, Deco, and Ballack, the neutral fan could be treated to a mouth-watering display of positive football.

What will swing the fixture in the home side's favour is Chelsea's ability to keep a clean sheet compared to Bordeaux's thus-far leaky defence.

Distractions

Bordeaux head coach Laurent Blanc is being lined up as Raymond Domenech's potential replacement of the French national side, if newspaper reports are to be believed. And what rough timing it is too.

Captain Ulrich Ramé will have to rally his troops before kick-off in order to keep his side's eye on goal - both literally, and metaphorically.

History

Chelsea boast the better runs in the Champions League and come off the back of a march to the final in their campaign last year. They were one penalty away from lifting the trophy, but slipped at the final hurdle.

The furthest stage Girondins have reached in the tournament is the semi-final in 1985. Sharing similar pain to Chelsea's semi-final defeats of recent years, Bordeaux managed to beat Juventus in the first leg 2-0 but the Old Lady came back in the return fixture and scored thrice to overcome the French club.

Quotes

Laurent Blanc - "We are perhaps not in the best condition psychologically to be on top form at the moment. And we are going through a difficult period."

Luiz Felipe Scolari - "We know quite a lot about Bordeaux. We've seen tapes of their games and have some additional information from other people. They've warned us to be careful, especially in this first match."

Luiz Felipe Scolari - "The primary objective is to reach the final again."

TEAM NEWS

Chelsea:

Michael Essien will not feature. The midfielder faces up to six months on the sidelines after suffering a serious knee injury while on international duty with Ghana.

Michael Ballack should be fit following an ankle/foot problem.

Didier Drogba came off the bench against Manchester City and also has reserve action underneath his belt against Arsenal last week so should now be nearing full fitness following a problematic knee injury.

Possible Starting XI: Cech - A Cole, Carvalho, Terry, Bosingwa - Mikel, Deco, Ballack, Lampard, J Cole - Anelka.

Girondins de Bordeaux:

Laurent Blanc fielded a strong line-up against Marseille and did not save any players for the Chelsea game in Saturday's League match, but all players left the pitch unscathed.

Possible starting XI: Ramé - Placente, Diawara, Henrique, Chalmé - Diarra - Wendel, Gouffran, Gourcuff - Cavenaghi, Chamakh.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Chelsea:

The orchestrator of affairs, the puller of the strings, the scheming playmaking artist that is Deco has a European pedigree matched by only a fistful of the continent's finest. Should he claim a Champions League winner's medal with Chelsea he will be one of only a few that have won three European Cups, with three different clubs. Has looked dangerous in the Premier League.

Girondins de Bordeaux:

Argentine striker Fernando Cavenaghi boasted a lot of promise when he first burst onto the European stage for Spartak Moscow but has not reached the limits originally set of him. He has been performing well in Ligue Un, knows where the goal is, and will want to impress on the European stage where he knows the world will be watching.

PREDICTION

I'm going for a bold, home rout: Chelsea 4-1 Bordeaux

Scolari: Champions League Trophy Not A Must
Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari has dispelled the notion that his job security depends on how well they do in the Champions League.
»Comments (22) Print This Story Send To A Friend Contact Us galleria zoom Club football's ultimate trophy has been the proverbial bridge too far for Chelsea, and it's conquest is said to have become a real obsession for Russian owner Roman Abramovich.

Scolari, who took over from Portugal during the summer, insists, however, that his predecessors Jose Mourinho and Avram Grant were not sacked as a result of failing to win the competition.

"You don't know the history. I know why the others were sacked. I could say it in Portuguese because in English it is impossible to say," said Scolari ahead of their opener against Bordeaux.

"I don't talk with Roman Abramovich about the Champions League. I talk to him about Chelsea and about all competitions. Particularly competition A, B or C?, never.

"We have to win all competitions, not only this competition. If you say this competition is more important than another I say no.

"This game is important and so is the League Cup and FA Cup. If you ask the players they want to win all of them.

"I won't say to my players only play for your life in the Champions League. They need to do their best in all competitions, all games and all the training sessions."

Chelsea were literally one kick away from conquering Europe last May, only for a fateful slip by John Terry, which effectively handed their bitter rivals Manchester United the title.

"I spoke to the players about starting this competition but I don't speak about losing the final or the penalties. I spoke only positive words," added Scolari.

"I know Chelsea have tried for many years to win the Champions League. Last season they reached the final and that was fantastic. It is not easy, not just for Chelsea, but for many clubs to reach the final.

"We start to try again but it is a long way and we need to respect the other clubs."

Scolari admitted, however, that the Champions League is a very big deal for any manager.

"I was a coach in many countries but I think the Champions League is one of the most important competitions of my life," Scolari said.

"In South America we have the Libertadores Cup. But in Europe we have more clubs and it is stronger than South America because there are more countries that have strong teams."

Chelsea take on Manchester United in the Premiership this weekend but the Brazilian manager insists that his focus is solely on the next challenge at hand, which is the Champions League opener.

"I must think about Bordeaux," he added. "I can't worry about Sunday, I could be dead!"
