Ok folks! So I finally decided to take the plunge and begin a run of blogs on this page, and you have to pardon me, as I have nothing pre-planned. However, I thought to share, in a nutshell, the discouragement that daily fills my heart, when faced with the patients I currently look after.

I am a Foundation year 1 doctor (aka house secretary, aka house-girl aka skivvy..pick one!) working within the Cardiology department in a District General Hospital in London. I've been at the job for 2 months now, and have another 2 to go. A typical patient I encounter daily is one with chest pain, later diagnosed as having had a heart attack, and often also having diabetes, high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and being a current or ex-smoker. Most of their faces become a blur to me, as they often share very similar health problems.

I also find it disheartening, looking at their past records, that most of these patients never really get cured, but keep coming back either in months' or years' time (says very little of our so-called ability to cure diseases!)

Based on this short experience of mine, I'd like to share a few important tips that can help you avoid a heart attack, and stay away from the cardiology department:

1- Eat healthily- we hear so much about this daily, but I can guarantee you this really is significant in reducing your cholesterol levels, which have been shown to be a key player in clogging up arteries, the essential cause of most heart attacks.

2- Control your blood pressure (BP)- talk to your GP regarding this, and ensure that yours is kept as low as possible using the adequate medications. You can also help yourself by cutting down (or out!) salt in your diet, reducing alcohol, and keeping an active lifestyle.

3-Cut out bad habits altogether- There's no nicer way of saying this, but, 'Smoking KILLS!'. There is ample evidence to show that there is a direct correlation with a number of organ failures (including the heart) and smoking (past or present habits). In case you didn't know, this is why doctors will inquire about smoking habits from 20yrs previously, we're not just being nosy! Don't forget to also cut down your alcohol intake to a minimum. UK recommends a maximum limit of 21 units weekly for men, and 14 for women.

4-Diabetes- Strangely, many people have diabetes and do not know it. They continue to have a high sugar intake in their diet, so that the condition progresses rapidly, by which point they are required to go on tablets, shortly followed by insulin. Unfortunately, some have a strong family history, and still do not take extra care. The best thing you can do for yourself is to check your random glucose level. This can be done at your GP surgery, or selected pharmacists. Once you know the result, your GP or other health provider will advice you accordingly. You can tackle it early enough by strictly modifying your diet and ensuring an active lifestyle.

5- Weight control- Don't wait to become overweight before trying to lose weight, keep fit and active now! Ensure you get your balanced diet of the right nutrients, and support this with regular exercise. The list of benefits from this, is endless!

6- Finally, take seriously any form of chest pain that is sudden and unusual. Don't waste any time, go to your GP or A & E immediately, as you may need urgent life-saving tests!

Ok, I'll leave you to ponder on and act upon these tips, and hope I won't be seeing you on my ward anytime soon (if ever!)....Till I sign on again, keep those hearts ticking folks!
