It is NOW a Crime to Impregnate a woman or girl and run away from responsibilities

There are countless stories of highly irresponsible Nigerian men who impregnate their women, saddle them with children and then bounce. Until now, the solution for the women who were “victims” was “fasting and prayers” and help from sympathetic family, friends, neighbors etc.

In Lagos state, that solution is no longer enough. Under a recently enacted state criminal statute, it is now an offense for a Nigerian man to impregnante a woman and leave her saddled with kids and no financial support.

“Any person who impregnates a woman or girl and fails, refuses or neglects to contribute to maternity related cost from ante-natal or post-natal stages, is guilty of an offence under section 277 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State and is liable to face the wrath of the law . . .”

The law is essentially the equivalent of child support laws here in the USA, which vary from state to state. Needless to say, it is basic common sense why Lagos State cannot afford to take on the burden of caring for other people’s babies. It puts a heavy demand on the already seriously burdened and under-funded foster care system in Lagos and Nigeria as a whole, and it increases the chances of infant mortality, among other things.

I am not familiar with Nigeria’s Family Law Code but if there is no law that covers child support for children from birth until they are 16-18years, then to me the law does not go far enough.

As it stands, postnatal means according to wikipedia, “the period beginning immediately after the birth of a child and extending for about six weeks. “ Ante-natal means pre-birth. So, who is stuck with the burden after the six weeks period ends? *Blank stare.*

Focusing on the Law that has been Passed, What does it Mean for you all AML artists?

If you recall, I shared with you all the news about Chocolate City’s Ice Prince who allegedly impregnated a college student and refused to accept responsibility. Ice Prince has since stepped up and is the proud father of a healthy baby, as he should have done from the beginning. However, assuming you are in Ice Prince’s situation and you refuse to man up, beyond the blogs, print, online and news media that will do a fine job of crucifying you, should the story get to the public, also know you can now face jail time.

As you know or should know, jail time in Nigeria can translate to an indefinite release, sadly.

Final thoughts:

1. Fellas, wrap it up. The itch cannot be so bad that you cannot wrap it up. Wrap it up.

2. If one thing leads to another and she gets pregnant, don’t let the fear of jail time prevent you from getting a DNA (paternity) test. GET A DNA (paternity) test at your local hospital or clinic. For all intended purposes, if you are an artist and a successful one at that, you are just a bank account. Many are waiting to swipe their ATMS and get large amounts of monetary withdrawals from you. If you do not get a DNA test to be sure you are the father, then be prepared for a lifetime of withdrawals till you have nothing to give. (This is precaution for crazy females out there with their own agenda. Trust me, they exist. ) Once you ascertain that you are the father, it really isn’t about the mama or you anymore. Take care of your child.

3. Finally, don’t be less than a man if you find yourself in such situation. Children are a gift from God. You got her pregnant, man up. The law should not have to step in for you to do so.

“Mr Ade Ipaye, Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, on Tuesday said the state government has enacted a new criminal law to protect pregnant women and their babies.

Ipaye stated this during a legislative awareness and sensitisation programme on the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011 and Administration of Criminal Justice Law, 2011.
