FEDERAL HIGH COURT AWARDS N500,000,00,00 (FIVE HUNDRED MILLION NAIRA) DAMAGES AGAINST POLICE IN A FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHT MATTER.
A Federal High Court sitting at Awka, Anambra State , presided by His Lordship, Hon Justice M.L Abubakar, has awarded five hundred million naira damages and other reliefs against the Nigerian Police Force.
In a fundamental Human Rights application of MRS JULIANA ONUORAH &13 ORS V. IGP AND 4 ORS FHC/AWK/CS/86/14, the Applicants contended that their fundamental Human rights were violated by the police in the attempt to unlawfully exploit and intimidate them at Our Lady,s Complex, Nkpor Anambra State, and unlawfully arresting and detaining some of the Applicants for more than the time allowed in the Constitution of Nigeria 1999, without any cogent and justifiable reason whatsoever.
Counsel to the Applicants, Oaikhena Osagie Esq, described the judgment as a fortification of the spirits and letters of the Constitution of Nigeria 1999, and applauded the Court saying that , the justice system of Nigeria ,of yesterday today and tommorow will never stand with aloof uninterest whilsts innocent citezens are subjected to the most audacious and inhuman treatment by anybody , entity whatsoever.
