Hi guys, I thought i should share this experience with you. I went for a haircut about a week ago at the neighbourhood salon. While i waiting on line for my turn i struck up a conversation with a fellow customer.I don't particularly remember how the conversation led to us talking about kidnappings in PH but all i remember is that the conversation got really intense. I mentioned to this guy, how i though the government was being counter productive in thinking they could deal with the kidnappings through the Joint Task Force alone. And that they would need to collaborate with every citizen in the affected states to successfully annihilate this trend. My argument was that the kidnappers live among the citizens and that all the useful security tips needed to empower the JTF could be easily gotten from them. This guy seemed to think that such a coalition was impossible because the citizens dont feel a sense of loyalty to the government since their leadership hardly ever represents the interest of the citizens.I thought he'd made a fairly good point. Then he went on to say that the kidnappings were a necessity to bring the government to the realization that the Naija delta desperately needed change as regards the governments attitude towards corruption. I thought that was too a high a price to pay for such an awareness and i was careful to express my opinions about that, especially the fact that most of the current hostages are neither affiliated to the government in any way or beneficiaries of their corrupt rule.So why should they be made to suffer? Now it gets really shocking. He responds by saying that they deserve to be kidnapped and that there are no innocent abductees.I insisted that there were, that i knew of a few and that it had been rumoured that quite a number of the female hostages may have been molested by their abductors. To which he said, "then let them be raped !" I felt the earth shift beneath my feet, sending lightening bolts up my spine. Was i hearing correctly or was i imagining that i heard what i just heard.What!....they deserved to be raped?!!! I mean on a regular day this guy would pass for a mentally fit male. But no right thinking homosapien would dare utter such cruel words.I suddenly realized i may have been discussing with a mental patient. I discontinued the conversation with the semi-lunatic at this point, but couldn't help rotating his words in my head. What i found most worrisome is that there may be hundreds, thousands or even millions of others like him with the same sick convictions. If this is true, then we've all got a lot of work to do in re-orientating the average indigene of the Naija delta.
