A letter to all Nigerians

Fellow Nigerians, it is with mixed feelings that I write this letter to you all. I am not happy with the present state of our dear country. Nigeria has no reason whatsoever to be where it is today.I have decided that despite my unhappiness with our current situation, our independence day is worth celebrating. There are some who can list countless reasons why there is nothing worth celebrating but there are also just as many reasons why we should celebrate.Nigeria has been through a lot of crisis which would have broken a lesser people since our colonial masters took their departure from our shores. We have been through several military coups, a civil war, several civil unrests and most recently religious wars which have become a recurring decimal in our lives. We musn‘t forget to add the militant uprising in the Niger Delta and subsequent kidnappings, which the rest of the country caught on like wild fire. Despite all these, Nigeria has tottered on the brink of war and back. We have refused to let our troubles break us. What we should be celebrating on October should be our resilience. It is only in Nigeria that a people would resort to making their homes and living amongst refuse dumps when life becomes unbearably tough. While our leaders clink their glasses and give national broadcasts, they should bear it in mind that beneath the seeming docility of our people is a rising resentment. We might be a hopeful, resilient race but hope is useless when we are determined to do what is wrong.
