LAGOS—A PRINCIPAL suspect in the murder of erstwhile gubernatorialcandidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, in the 2007 generalelections in Ogun State, Otunba Oladipupo Akanni Dina, has beenarrested by the Police at the Force Criminal Investigations Department,FCID, Annex, Alagbon, Lagos.

The suspect, however, told Vanguard that he had no hands in the killing of the politician.

Parading the 25-year-old suspect identified as Ben Faton Djidemon Aguemon alias Mathew Asumo, in Lagos, the Deputy Inspector-General ofPolice in-charge of the annex, John Ahmadu said he was arrested after a‘thorough discreet profiling’ in both Nigeria and Benin Republic bydetectives investigating the case.

Ahmadu said: “The suspect who allegedly specialized in snatching exotic vehicles along the Owode- Idiroko axis at gun point, inconjunction with his fleeing foreign and local accomplices in crime,had driven the late politician’s black Toyota Camry marked FQ661EKY,into his criminal receivers in the neighbouring country.

“The incident was a big challenge to the Police. But with the immense assistance of the Federal Government, the Police have madeseveral arrests and placed other suspects outside the country,especially in Benin Republic on watch list, through the Interpol anddiplomatic circle.

“Police efforts in conjunction with foreign collaboration led to the arrest of one Ben Faton Djidemon Aguemon alias Mathew Asumo, aBeninois. He specializes in snatching vehicles along Owode-Idiroko roadat gun point.

Suspect’s confession

“He has confessed to taking various cars especially jeeps through the bush path into Benin Republic with foreign and local collaborators.He is believed to have driven the late Dipo Dina’s car to his criminalreceivers in Benin Republic whose identities are closely guarded forsecurity reasons.

“The Police are on the trail of other suspects who are connected with the killing of the late politician. Other suspects connected withseries of car snatching along the Owode, Sango-Ota and Idiroko axishave been arrested and are undergoing interrogation.

This brings to the fore that Oladipupo Akanni Dina and others on the ill-fated journey might have been victims of armed robbery attack. Andthe actual killers are still being looked for. The public is, however,requested to avail the police with information on this and any othercriminal information of relevance:, he stated.

On the fate of some of the suspects earlier arrested which included driver to the late politician, Tunde Oyediran, and one Prophetess(Mrs.) Olufumilayo Olagoke, who were in the car with the latepolitician when he was killed, Ahmadu said they would soon be grantedbail because investigations had shown that they were on a personalbusiness when the incident took place.

Otunba Oladipupo Dina was killed by unknown gun men in January 25, 2010 at a spot opposite the Covenant University gate along theSango-Ota, Idiroko road.
