Hausa get ultimatum on alleged killer in Yenagoa

Aug 6, 2009By Samuel OyadonghaYenagoa — Fresh crisis looms in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, as the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, Central Zone has given the Hausa community in the state 72 hours to produce the man that killed a mother and daughter last month in the capital city.Chairman and Secretary of the zone, Jonathan Lokpobiri and Douye Amusu, respectively, yesterday in Yenagoa issued the ultimatum after consulting with stakeholders.The IYC described as most disheartening the gruesome murder of an innocent woman and her mother last month in Yenagoa.In a four-point resolution made available to newsmen in Yenagoa, the Ijaw Youth Council stated that, “the Hausa community is hereby given 72 hours ultimatum to immediately produce the perpetrator of this dastardly act in the interest of peace.”The youth body also demanded a written undertaking from the Hausa community to assure the Ijaws of their resolve to “curtail the repetition of this unwarranted killing without further delay.”It further warned that “the repetition of this kind of inhuman act will no longer be tolerated by the Ijaw Youth Council.”The youth body threatened that at the expiration of the ultimatum, failure to produce the suspect(s) will certainly warrant their resolve to demand the immediate evacuation of all the Hausa community in Bayelsa.“We shall remain steadfast to our avowed commitment as a people,” the IYC warned.Contacted, the Bayelsa Police Commissioner, Elder Onuoha Udeka, said he was not aware of the ultimatum and advised all those concerned to join the police in the search for the culprit.“They should follow the laws of the land because it will not be proper to create anything that would cause reprisal effect,” he said.It would be recalled that Mrs. Korikegha Agene, a nursing mother of four and her aged mother, Pamela Naingba, were murdered by a-yet-to-be identified man said to be of northern stock on July 21,2009, at their Etegwe suburb home in Yenagoa.The deceased, 33-year-old Korikegha is married to a serving Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) in Kwara State.As at press time, the remains of the deceased are still at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri.
