The Iya Oge of Lagos, Chief Mrs Opral Benson, 77, has been made the honorary Consular General of Nigeria to her country of birth, Liberia.
The proprietor of the Opral Benson Beauty Institute and widow of Nigeria's first minister of information, late TOS Benson, received an official latter on the 7th of August from the minister of foreigner affairs.
The fashion Icon will operate from Lagos, which has been her base for many years, instead of moving to Abuja where most consuls are based.

Olupitan-Hassan was brutalised by the soldiers who were driving in a military convoy at the Obanikoro end of Ikorodu Road on July 15 for allegedly breaking the side mirror of one of the vehicles in their convoy.
He later died at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital on July 29 as a result of the injury he sustained when he was brutalised.
At a prayer session held at his Opebi residence before his remains were interred at the Atan Cemetery, Lagos, on Saturday, friends, associates and family members paid tribute to the retired director of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency.
Olupitan-Hassan’s younger brother, Adedotun, said he was still hoping that the Nigerian Army authorities would allow justice to prevail by fishing out the perpetrators.
Adedotun said, “It’s so unfortunate and painful that his life was cut short abruptly by those who were commissioned and conscripted with tax payers’ money to protect him.
“The matter has definitely dragged for too long. Friday last week, a colonel attached to the Military Police of the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, Lagos, called me on the phone that the matter had been transferred from the Special Investigation Bureau of the Nigerian Army, Arakan Barracks, Apapa, Lagos, where we had reported the matter.
“I’m still optimistic that the transfer of the case would be for good. I have been invited by the army on Monday (today).”
The deceased’s friend, who identified himself simply as Alhaji Funsho, urged the army authorities to fish out the perpetrators and try them in a criminal court.
He said, “When I heard the news, I was surprised that the soldiers could brutalise an unarmed civilian. I still can’t understand such barbaric and overzealous act from a soldier that claims to be a professional. Whatever might have happened they shouldn’t have brazenly descended on him the way they did.
“The perpetrators have committed manslaughter. They should stand before the law court and explain why a defenceless man should be treated in such a manner. This will serve as a deterrent to other overzealous uniformed men.”

On Friday August 10th, mother of 3 and banker with Stanbic IBTC, Yinka Johnson, was arrested by the police for allegedly crushing an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority to death while driving against traffic along the Lekki Expressway.
According to LASTMA, Yinka killed Hammed Balogun by driving recklessly while trying to evade arrest. But Yinka and her friends have denied the accusation, claiming Hammed was hit and killed by a Danfo driver that was also trying to avoid arrest.
Yinka Johnson is currently being detained in Panti Prison with her 2 month old baby. The police say they plan to charge her to court for the death of Hammed Balogun.

A 33 year old Hammed Balogun a staff of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) was this morning killed by a banker along Lekki-Ajah Expressway while carrying out his official assignment at his duty post at Mega City, Ajah area of Lagos. The driver whose identity was revealed by the Auto Inspector device as Yinka Johnson a staff of IBTC drove in a Green Landover Jeep SUV with registration Plate number CY 276 LSD against traffic from Mega chicken inward toll Plaza two (2) and was intercepted by three officials of LASTMA led by the Head of Operations, Mr Quayum Asafa for traffic violation.
In a drama like scene, Johnson started driving recklessly in other to escape contravention and in the process ran over the officer. The deceased was rushed down to Germaine Hospital where he later died as a result of injury sustained from the accident while the corpse was deposited at the Lagos State Teaching Hospital, Ikeja for autopsy.
Realising what she has done, she ran and escaped from the scene of the incident immediately into Ikota Estate, Ajah with the security men shutting the gate permanently. The situation became riotous as the security attached to the gate refused all entries to open the gate until the intervention of the Area Commander in charge of Area J, Mr Felix Uwamli who mobilized and called for backup before access could be gained into the Estate. The suspect was finally arrested and taken to Ajiwe Police station from where she was transferred to the Criminal Investigative Department, Panti for further interrogations.

Now this is Yinka Johnson's version of what really happened
I was driving on Lekki-Epe Expressway trying to navigate to the other side of the road when I was accosted by a LASTMA official. The path I took was a one-way road but residents of Ikota Estate usually take it because of the ongoing road reconstruction on the alternative road. While I was discussing with the LASTMA official, a vehicle crushed another official a few metres away, causing commotion. I did not run from the crime scene as it was not far from my home but instead came down from my car and called my husband.
After the LASTMA officials drove my car away, I went to the police station with my husband to report the incident. When I got to the police station, the area commander immediately took over the case and took me to the office of the commissioner of police. I heard the state governor had already told him about the case.
When I narrated my ordeal to the CP, he did not believe my story. He immediately ordered that I should be taken to the SCID. I am the innocent person here, yet I am being made to pay for what I did not do.

You might have heard the story going round about the Banker who allegedly killed a LASTMA official by knocking him down with her car.
Eye witnesses on the scene insist that the LASTMA official was in fact knocked down by a Danfo bus he was trying to accost AFTER he arrested the Banker for a traffic offence.
In fact, her car was about being towed as can be seen from the picture on the lastma website. You can also see from the picture posted there that the car was empty. How did she get back in, ram the towing vehicle and killed the LASTMA man?
LASTMA is trying to skew the story as murder and she is currently in detention. Please note that I have seen her car and it doesn’t have a single dent on it.
Kindly spread the word and encourage eye witnesses to come forward and give statements at Panti where she is being held.
She is a mother of 3 (including a 2mth old baby who is with her in detention). I know her personally.
Please note that the incident happened on Friday morning 10/08/2012 at Ikota, Lekki Express Way. She was on her way to work.

Some people have been calling me claiming they were eye witnesses...but I don't know what I'm supposed to do with the information because the police is convinced she's guilty. I just hope that the truth comes to light before an innocent woman (that is if she's really innocent) is put in prison for a crime she didn't commit.

OUR STAND ON THE ISSUE OF STATE POLICE IN NIGERIA
The issue of State Police have been at the center of National discourse now for ages, like several other issues which have fueled tension between the Federal Government on one side and State Governments on the other side, the issue of the state police have become a recurrent decimal which we believe the time have come for us to resolve it once and for all.
However, in resolving the issue one must put into consideration firstly, the genuine fear of misuse or even possibility of armed confrontation between one state that stock piles arms and the Federal Government on the other hand and secondly, the genuine and almost helplessness of the State Government in term of tackling crime within their domain without getting orders from above thereby making their title as the Chief Executive Officer or Chief Security Officer of their state as a title on paper only. Our stand is that the Federal Government should yield at this point so that an Act of Parliament or Constitutional Amendment could be carried out to define the scope of duties and relationship between the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) and the proposed State Police especially who takes precedence whenever they both find themselves working on the same case.
We believe that the wisdom of the now is to allow the establishment of State Police but the argument should be what kind of Armoury should the State Police legally carry?
We believe that there is already too much arms in the society being wielded by various security outfits whose only education on the use of such arms is to suppress the people and even the growing question of whether some compromised officers will not one day turn the used of their arm against the Federation? we concour that the new State Police should not be added to this league.
So in establishing the State Police they should legally be allowed to carry weapons ( like Martial art kit, Spy Cameras, Trained dogs, Pepper sprays, Hand Cuffs, Tear Gas and maybe Stun Guns e.t.c) except lethal weapons. That way the State Government will have their bite in the war against criminals and thereby able to contain well over 90% of the crime in their domain. we know that by our suggestion, the aspiration of the Governors may not have been fully met since they cannot combat sophisticated crime like terrorism or armed rebellion for instance, but the beauty of it is that they themselves will be prevented from starting one.
However in the event that the Federal Government fails to yield in the present argument then our view is that there is nothing in our present Constitution that prohibit the establishment of State Security Department or organization, so long as it is not called “State Police’’ but the only issue is that of ammunition, which the earlier suggestion of carrying arms except lethal weapon will suffice since arms and ammunition is in exclusive legislative list the 1999 Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria which only the Federal Government can act upon.
This is our stand

One of the South African hitmen, Mziwamadoda Qwabe (pictured above on the right), accused of killing honeymooner Anni Dewani was this morning sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to her murder.
28 year old Anni Dewani (pictured above with her husband) was shot and killed after the taxi she and her husband were travelling in was hijacked on the outskirts of Cape Town on November 13, 2010 while on their honeymoon. Her British husband Shrien Dewani is accused of masterminding the killing in a murder set up to look like a botched carjacking. He allegedly hired three men to kill Anni. He says he's not guilty.
South Africa is still awaiting his extradition. Qwabe is the second of three South African suspects to be jailed. In 2010 another man turned state witness and implicated Dewani in plotting to kill his new bride. He was sentenced to 18 years
The governor of Kogi State, Idris Wada, wore full body Armour while visiting injured members of the Deeper Life Bible Church in hospital yesterday.
At least 34 people were killed, including 16 children, on Monday night when suspected Boko Haram members opened fire at worshipers at the Deeper Life Church in Okene, Kogi State.
Gunmen on Monday invaded the Deeper Life Church at Otite area in Okene, killing 16 worshippers and leaving many others wounded NAN reports. The Commander of the Joint Military Task Force in Lokoja, Lt-Col. Gabriel Olorunyomi, confirmed the incident. He said 15 worshippers died instantly.
Northern youths under the aegis of the Arewa Youth Forum on Tuesday in Kaduna asked President Goodluck Jonathan to “call to order,” his kinsmen – former Federal Commissioner for Information and Ijaw Leader, Chief Edwin Clark; and the leader of the Niger Delta Volunteer Force, Asari Dokubo for their “unguarded utterances” which could lead to the disintegration of the country.
National President of the AYF, Mr. Gambo Gujungu, in a statement, insisted that the region was not afraid of war.
He said, “People like Clark and Asari had forgotten that the region was the mainstay of the Nigerian state before the discovery of oil.
“It is pertinent to let the war mongers know that the North is not afraid of war. But we are advocates of peace. We are not war mongers and will not and will never call for war within the polity of Nigeria.
“But we are bothered that Asari Dokubo, Edwin Clark and co are turning President Goodluck Jonathan into an Ijaw leader instead of the President of the Federal republic of Nigeria that he is.”
He warned people beating the drum of war as according to him, in the past two decades, apart from Sri Lanka, nobody had won a war against another country.
Gujungu said it was unfortunate that the likes of Asari were blaming the North for Boko Haram as if every northerner is a member of Boko Haram. “That is not good enough,” he added.
Gujungu said in the statement, “Having taken a keen interest and appraisal of what has been happening in the Nigerian polity of recent culminating in the recent outburst and frontal attack on the North by the leader of Niger Delta People Volunteer Force, Alhaji Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, we have deem it necessary to react as follows.
“Let it be known that the youths of the North under the umbrella of the AYF are peace loving people who believe in the peaceful coexistence of Nigeria and has been working and will continue to work for the peaceful co existence of the country.
“Asari should know that some of us are quite aware of the type of person he is. We know his antecedents and the type of person he is. The Volunteer Force leader is not the one to threaten any body and should not continue in the way of threat or else we will be force to expose him for who he truly is.”
While addressing a press conference in Abuja on Monday,the former Ijaw Youth Council president and founder of Niger Delta People's Volunteer Force said:
The arrogance of B/H is un-islamic. The type of bomb they are using is small small pikin bomb. If we begin, nobody will stay in Abuja.
We don’t manufacture bomb but we buy bombs & dynamites. I started armed struggle in the N/Delta. It's because of GEJ that we at quiet. Soon, we will not be able to guarantee our patience any more. If Ijaw people should retaliate, every household in the North will cry. It is the North that needs peace more than us.
Justice Marcel Okoh of the High Court of the oil-rich Delta State was reportedly abducted by suspected kidnappers on Tuesday in Asaba, the capital.
The judge was reportedly kidnapped on his way to the State high court today.
As at the time of filing report, no contact has been made with members of family of the judge by the kidnappers, neither has any ransom been demanded.
The Delta State police image maker, Charles Muka who confirmed the incident to P.M. NEWS however disclosed that the official jeep from which Justice Okoh was kidnapped had been recovered by the police.
He however could not confirm if he was alone in the car before his abductors struck.
Okoh was among the six judges appointed in May, 2012 by the administration of Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan.

Ex-militants seeking inclusion into the federal government Amnesty Programme in the Niger Delta yesterday threatened a fresh attack on oil installations in the region if the new National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki fails to recognize them in the next one week. National speaker of the phase III ex-militants, Anuke Godwin, issued the threat contained in a text message to Weekly Trust yesterday in Yenagoa.
Godwin berated the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, noting that their own kinsman had disappointed them by performing below expectation since his assumption of office.
He said, “We thought that Jonathan’s administration would serve the interest of his kindred but we were wrong. Our calculation proved the contrary as his government after two years in office has nothing to show for it in the Niger Delta region. The Yaradua’s leadership was more reliable and preferred to this present one”.
Godwin explained that the NSA would have more battles to tackle in the country other than the menace of Boko Haram in some parts of the north due to what he described as the long neglect of his group’s plea to become part of the amnesty.
“We are urging the new NSA to focus attention on phase III amnesty programme to avoid disaster. We are telling the entire nation that if they take us for granted, a week from now, we shall resume firing to down the oil production without mercy,” the text reads in part.
Reacting, the JTF’s spokesman, Lt. Col. Onyema Nwachukwu said the mandate of the Joint Task Force code named ‘Operation Pulo Shield’ is quite clear and unambiguous- to curb all acts of economic sabotage bedeviling Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.”
