According to reports, the armed robbers stormed the bank at 9:30am and over-powered the security operatives following a gun duel which left anxious customers scampering for safety.
While the robbery was still on, Mr Anenih's aides came in and opened fire on the armed robbers, leaving two members of the gang severely injured. Though the injured men were dragged out of the area by their colleagues, the police recovered a Toyota Camry car from the robbers.
A security source said the robbers made away with some undisclosed amount of money.
Police spokesman in the state, Ahwara Ejiroro who confirmed the incident in a telephone interview, said: "Uromi is a bit far from here. And we have not received signal from the Divisional Police Officer there."
Robbers cause accident
Meanwhile, one life was yesterday lost in a motor accident caused by armed robbers in Benin City, as 14 others who sustained injuries were rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for medical attention.
The accident occurred yesterday at the Benin bye-pass when two buses had a head-on collision while trying to escape from armed robbers who were operating on the road.
Austin Okeke, one of the drivers involved in the accident, told newsmen that he was travelling from Lagos to the Eastern part of the country when they encountered the armed robbers at the Benin Bye-pass. Mr Okeke, who also sustained injuries in the process, explained that all he could remember was that he tried to make a U-turn to avoid the armed robbers.

Come on - help me here, folks. Somethings are just distastefull, some manageable, and others? Outrightly unbearable and disgusting!
We face one too many heart aches in our land - and pokey, irating, absolutely unbearable so-called ISPs addings theirs to the suffering calls for concern.
I really don't know of you guys out there, but I'll narrate my own side of the story as experienced.
To be candid: is frasting surfing the net in our beloved country - Nigeria. I reside in Port Harcourt, and, my experiences/encounter so far with the so-called ISPs have been damn awful and ugly.
I used MTN first, got fed up, ditched them; and, as a matter of fact: MTN is just about the very worse -  when it cmes to providing internet services. The next, I tried ZoomMobile; I won't say theirs posed much difficulty to make you scream(atleast you can breathe a sigh of relief after MTN's nightmare), but, just like anyone who will assess them would have this basic demerit of them: they're "unprofessional". I went on to Etisalat; in all fairness to them - theirs was "average"; when they up - they're up(even if it lasts for 10minutes), atleast within this short period of time, you can atleast "access" the net(even if is on their usual low speed. They don't have 3G, but their CS claims they do).
Alright, that's not all. The freshiest, currently trending now is:: I subscribed to MTN's BIS(Blackberry Internet Service) Weekly, last week Friday, at about 10pm, after the much throe to get started with the service(you'll call CS and have to wait for an average of one hour before you can be given audience) - they got to push/enable  my BB browser, after I must have sent the HRT registion to them and did a hard reset; they pushed all the essential BB Service Books(Twitter, Facebook, Yahoo!/GoogleTalk/WindowsLive messengers, and stuffs like that icons) to my Handheld; as a matter of fact: I they sent me all the essential Service Books that came with the service(beautifying my homescreen with more icons - for beautification sake),  it all ended there. When it come to me using any of the services or surfing proper - MTN just turns off the light on me. Just about nothing works! I really started having headache, migrating into migrain; because it gave me serious concern - having to pay for a service and these guys just sit on top of my money and frustrate me,
I subscribed to Etisalat's normal daily WAP internet, but when I insert their SIM their WAP browser nor that of the BB was nowhere. I had to download Opera Mini browser(via my PC) and started using. For a while: everything went on smoothly, untill I decided to download a file, I was promted with a message the says I don't have any Service Book for Etisalat, they should enable my BB browser. They don't have their WAP browser on my BB even.
So just getting a minor task done online could forever.
Some are of the view that Starcomms seems to be reliable and stable. I tried requesting for internet settings sometime from Glo, and the CS that attended said it will takes about 48hours to activate! Now that was dissauding.
Am yet to tr try Airtel and Multi-links
That has been my experience, so far.
Could you please relate what your experience, or comment/contribute your advice to this; to help us make a better informed futre decision.
Thank you.

The Presidential Candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change(CPC), General Muhammadu Buhari  has described the  allegation making the rounds that he was responsible for the inability of his party and the ACN to forge an alliance ahead of Saturday polls as baseless and unfounded.
While stressing that the decisive moment Nigeria enters this weekend requires sobriety on the part of leaders who care about the fate of the suffering people of Nigeria, General Buhari said his response was only to set the record straight about this misinformation.
He explained that he embraced the renewed talks between the two parties in the best interest of millions of Nigerians yearning for change with great enthusiasm.
"The talks however ran into difficulties when the ACN insisted the only conditions for agreement was that they must produce the Vice President. By the electoral laws, this was virtually impossible before this election. We suggested that they should let us jointly go into the elections and jointly form the government after our victory. But our friends were not ready to take us on our honour and went to the media," the presidential candidate said in a media statement by his spokesman, Yinka Odumakin.
While regretting the inability to get the parties to agree to harness their electoral fortunes before Saturday, General Buhari said the task at hand is to get rid of the PDP at the polls through voters mass turnout and eternal vigilance from accreditation to the final announcement of results.
He called on millions of his supporters across Nigeria to troop out en masse on Saturday and vote him in as the President:"This is our finest hour to get the PDP out and we must not miss it. The rigging machine must be smashed on Saturday," he concluded.

Apart from a perplexing dip in rating, indigenous hip hop act, Lord of Ajasa whose real name is Olusegun Osaniyi, is now confronted with another major problem that threatens to leave his career in the doldrums. The Akure, Ondo State native has reportedly been banned from entering the United Kingdom for the next 10 years! E-Punch sources say the artiste was banned when the British High Commission discovered that he presented fake travel documents when he first applied for a visa some time back but was denied.

A source close to the singer told E-Punch that a London-based music promoter had invited him over for a series of shows. They agreed terms and the unnamed promoter sent some documents which the singer was to present at the embassy. Sadly, he did not know the papers were fake. “When they denied him visa, he did not bother to appeal. He just took it philosophically that the trip was not meant to be. However, when he went back recently to apply for another visa, the embassy officials now brought out his file that he presented fake documents the first time. He was really very furious because he was innocent. It was the person in London that should be banned, not Ajasa.”

When E-Punch got across to the singer who burst into the music scene with his free-flowing, laidback lyrics delivered in unadulterated Yoruba language, someone who did not want to be named picked the call. He said it is true that Ajasa was banned from entering the UK but that he was working on getting a lawyer to appeal the ban. “If he had appealed the visa denial that first time, they would have told him his documents were fake but he didn’t and that is why this is happening. He has missed so many shows in London and that is the painful part. We will get a good lawyer to help us reverse the ban,” he says. Several attempts made to reach Lord of Ajasa on phone were futile.

For procuring a dangerous abortion that now threatens the life a 17-year old girl, the father of the girl’s boyfriend, Ganiyu Adekunle and his two sons, Ajibola and Tunde have been remanded at the Kirikiri Prisons, Apapa, Lagos, Nigeria on the order of an Ejigbo magistrate’s court.

Tunde__Ajibola.jpg?width=500They were docked at the court on a three-count charge of aborting a six-month pregnancy for the victim who is the girlfriend of Ajibola Adekunle.

Consequent upon the illegal abortion, doctors at Igando General Hospital, Alimosho Local Government Area, Lagos State, Southwest, Nigeria are now battling to save the life of the girl who was impregnated and forced to abort the six-month pregnancy by some members of the family of her boyfriend, Ajibola Adekunle who impregnated her.

The victim alleged that she was held down and injected with contraceptive drug that forcefully aborted the pregnancy by some family members of her boyfriend, Ajibola who impregnated her. She said they did it to cover the shame of having a child outside marriage.

Ajibola’s father, Ganiyu and Tunde were charged to the court for alleged conspiracy for aborting the baby illegally contrary to Section 516,228 and 249 of the Criminal Code Cap 17 of the Criminal Code, 2003.

Narrating to the police what happened, the victim said that she was impregnated by her boyfriend, Ajibola Adekunle who did not deny it. She said he only complained that he had no money to marry now.

She said her uncle she was living with Mr. Waliu Olegbela contacted his parents and they agreed to take care of the pregnancy until she delivers.

Her boyfriend’s father, Ganiyu Adekunle, offered to take care of the victim and baby. She did not know that it was a ploy to terminate the pregnancy.

She said that she left her uncle’s house and started living with the family at 321, Pacific Estate, Ewedogbon bus stop, Akesan, Lagos State.

On the day of the incident, she said that they conspired and brought a nurse who told her she wanted to treat her only to be injected with drugs that aborted her pregnancy.

She said that immediately the drugs were administered on her, she started bleeding profusely until she collapsed and was rushed to the General Hospital where she is now receiving treatment and where she has been abandoned.

Following the treatment meted out to the girl who is an orphan, the police at Igando Station arrested the father, Ganiyu, Ajibola and Tunde and charged them to Ejigbo magistrate’s court with conspiracy and procuring abortion of a six-month old baby.

When the charge was read to them, they pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge. The presiding Magistrate Mrs. S O. Solebo granted them bail in the sum of N250,000 with two responsible sureties each in like sum.

The matter has been adjourned till 5 May 2011 for trial while the court ordered that they should be remanded at Kirikiri Prison, Apapa, Lagos, as they could not fulfil the bail conditions in good time.

Embattled Libyan dictator, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, likes to be sorrounded by beautiful women, his former nurse, Okmsana Balinskaya, has revealed.

Muammar-Gahdaffi.jpg?width=295

Muammar Gahdaffi

In an interview published in the current edition of Newsweek magazine, the Ukranian-born nurse who managed to escape from Libya said: “ Gaddafi just likes to be sorrounded by beautiful things and people.”

Balinskaya said she was picked from a line of candidates after shaking hand with him and Gaddafi looked at her eyes, stressing that the Libyan leader made his decisions about people with his first hand shake with them.

According to the former nurse to Gaddafi, she could not have access to his boss for the first three months. But later she joined other nurses in their duties of checking his heart beat, blood pressure and attending to him regularly.

The former nurse said they called Gaddafi ‘Papi’ meaning ‘little father.’ Balinskaya commended the dictator’s generosity, saying he gave each of his nurses and other personal aides a golden wrist watch yearly with his picture which opened the door of fortune to any recipient anywhere in Libya.

Balinskaya revealed that local medical staff used to envy the nurses who were recruited mostly from Ukrain because they earned $300 (about N450,000) per nurse per month, almost three times the Libyan medical team’s pay.

However, the former nurse denied any of the nurse was Gaddafi’s lover, adding “none of us nurse was his lover. The only time we ever touched him was to take his blood pressure. Gaddafi chose to line only attractive Ukrainian women, most probably because of our looks.”

His former nurse recalled some of Gaddafi’s odd habits like listening to Arab music on an old cassette player and changing his clothes several times in a day. She said he was so obsessed with changing his dress that sometimes when his guests were already waiting for him, he would go back to his room to change his outfit.

While travelling across poor African countries, the former nurse said Gaddafi used to fling money and candy out of his armoured Limosine to children who would scramble for them. But he usually avoided getting in body contact with the kids out of fear of contracting infections.

Balinskaya disclosed that she travelled in company of the Libyan dictator to the United States, Italy, Portugal and Venezuela. During such trips, she said, Gaddafi gave them bonuses for shopping.

She said her impression of the Libyan people was that at least half of the population hate Gaddafi because he has all the power, took all the decisions and all the luxury to himself.

The former nurse said when she first watched the revolution in Tunisia and Egypt on television, she never thought it could happen in Libya. But she opined that if Gaddafi had relinquished power to one of his sons, Serif, when he had opportunity, things would have been different in the country.

Balinskaya said she fled Tripoli early February this year but two of his friends were not that lucky as they were being forced by Gaddafi to stay and perhaps die by his side.

Gaddafi’s former nurse said she escaped when she was four months pregnant for her Ukrainian lover which she knew the Libyan dictator would not have approved.

She added that while his closest aides were running away from the crisis-torn country, Gaddafi forced his chilren and two other Ukrainian nurses around him to stay until their last breath.

The Federal Government on Thursday shut all the country’s land borders till 6am on Monday to ensure a peaceful and hitch-free conduct of the presidential election.

It added that vehicular movement would not be allowed nationwide from 8 am to 5pm tomorrow, the day of the election.

The Minister of Interior, Capt. Emmanuel Ihenacho (retd.) announced this just as the Police also said that movement would be restricted from 10pm today till 6am tomorrow nationwide.

Ihenacho’s statement was made available shortly after the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, assured of the commission’s readiness for the poll.

The minister, in the statement by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Alhaji S.B. Osigiza, explained that only INEC vehicles, security operatives specially assigned for election duties as well as those on essential and emergency duties would be allowed to ply the roads.

Also, the Nigerian Police Force, through its Public Relations Officer, Mr. Olusola Amore, said in Abuja that there would be restriction of movement of persons from 8am to 6pm on Saturday within the voting areas and centres.

It added that the restriction order was to enable law enforcement agents checkmate miscreants, thugs and other criminals who might want to use the cover of darkness to interrupt the smooth conduct of the elections.

A statement by Amore reads, “The police will not condone any act or conduct that is detrimental to the smooth conduct of the election as any trouble makers will be arrested and dealt with according to the law.

“The police are using this medium to assure all Nigerians that all law enforcement agents are working in collaboration to ensure violence free and fair elections.

“All eligible voters are advised to go out and cast their votes without fear of molestation and they are also enjoined to leave the immediate voting vicinity and allow their various party agents to take care of protecting and watching all vote cast until they are duly counted and recorded by the INEC officials.”

Also on Thursday, Jega directed all presiding officers of INEC to paste results of elections at the polling units.

He explained while receiving the European Union election observation group that the order was necessary to guarantee transparency and ensure greater fairness in the polling process.

Jega, who advised voters to ensure that returning officers pasted results at the polling units after tabulation, expressed worry that the commission received reports that results were not pasted in some polling units during last Saturday’s National Assembly elections.

“Once the results are tabulated, they must be pasted. This is in order to bring additional credibility in the polling process,’’ he said.

The INEC chairman also expressed the commission’s readiness for the presidential poll.

He said that the states had taken delivery of all the materials needed for the exercise.

Jega acknowledged hitches witnessed at the National Assembly election, including the late commencement of voting due to the late arrival of materials and some missing names in the voters’ register.

He said, “Some of the challenges of accreditation have been addressed. We have also taken steps to correct the omission of names of voters from the register at some polling centres.

“We hope their will be remarkable improvement by next Saturday,” he said.

Jega expressed his appreciation to the EU for its contribution to the achievements of the Commission since he assumed office.

Earlier, the EU Chief Observer, Alojz Peterlez, had commended INEC for a successful National Assembly elections.

Peterlez said the mission of the group was to ascertain the commission’s preparations for presidential poll.

Antioxidants are intimately involved in the prevention of cellular damage -- the common pathway for cancer, aging, and a variety of diseases. The scientific community has begun to unveil some of the mysteries surrounding this topic, and the media has begun whetting our thirst for knowledge. Athletes have a keen interest because of health concerns and the prospect of enhanced performance and/or recovery from exercise. The purpose of this article is to serve as a beginners guide to what antioxidants are and to briefly review their role in exercise and general health. What follows is only the tip of the iceberg in this dynamic and interesting subject.

It's the radicals, man

Free radicals are atoms or groups of atoms with an odd (unpaired) number of electrons and can be formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. Once formed these highly reactive radicals can start a chain reaction, like dominoes. Their chief danger comes from the damage they can do when they react with important cellular components such as DNA, or the cell membrane. Cells may function poorly or die if this occurs. To prevent free radical damage the body has a defense system of antioxidants.

Antioxidants are molecules which can safely interact with free radicals and terminate the chain reaction before vital molecules are damaged. Although there are several enzyme systems within the body that scavenge free radicals, the principle micronutrient (vitamin) antioxidants are vitamin E, beta-carotene, and vitamin C. Additionally, selenium, a trace metal that is required for proper function of one of the body's antioxidant enzyme systems, is sometimes included in this category. The body cannot manufacture these micronutrients so they must be supplied in the diet.

Vitamin E : d-alpha tocopherol. A fat soluble vitamin present in nuts, seeds, vegetable and fish oils, whole grains (esp. wheat germ), fortified cereals, and apricots. Current recommended daily allowance (RDA) is 15 IU per day for men and 12 IU per day for women.

Vitamin C : Ascorbic acid is a water soluble vitamin present in citrus fruits and juices, green peppers, cabbage, spinach, broccoli, kale, cantaloupe, kiwi, and strawberries. The RDA is 60 mg per day. Intake above 2000 mg may be associated with adverse side effects in some individuals.

Beta-carotene is a precursor to vitamin A (retinol) and is present in liver, egg yolk, milk, butter, spinach, carrots, squash, broccoli, yams, tomato, cantaloupe, peaches, and grains. Because beta-carotene is converted to vitamin A by the body there is no set requirement. Instead the RDA is expressed as retinol equivalents (RE), to clarify the relationship. (NOTE: Vitamin A has no antioxidant properties and can be quite toxic when taken in excess.)

12166307679?profile=originalIT was like a movie of sorts in Abuja, on Wednesday, at an event to mark the end of the campaign of the presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), as the former head of state went emotional and continuously shed tears while delivering his speech.

Buhari, who could not hold back tears as he read his speech at the International Conference Centre, venue of the event, vowed that Saturday’s presidential election would be the last he would contest.

The presidential candidate stated that he was seeking to clinch the presidency as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had done much havoc to Nigerians and their reputation.

He insisted that he joined the presidential race out of personal conviction and concern for the welfare of the Nigerian people.

According to him, he had never at any time embezzled public fund throughout his career and challenged all the candidates in the presidential race to make the same claim before the Nigerian public, if they have not done so.

Buhari, who received two awards, Noble Father of Nigerian Youths and Icon of Nigerian Democracy, from the Nigerian Youths Organisation, (NYO), at the ceremony, alleged that the years of PDP’s government were marred with “unforgettable look of dejection and despondency on the faces of Nigerians.”

The sufferings of majority of the Nigerian citizen, he maintained, witnessed “systematic raping and pillaging of the country’s economy by parties and individuals, without much thought for due process or care for tomorrow.”

According to him, “these are the horrific realities of life in our country today and they are a mere fraction of the numerous difficulties, agonies and frustrations being faced daily by the vast majority of our people.”

However, the presidential campaign council of the PDP has expressed shock and dismay at what it called “Buhari’s public show of shame at an Abuja town hall meeting, which he organised “in the face of the stark realities of defeat that await him in the Saturday presidential poll.”

The council said against the dummy of a disciplined, no-nonsense army general “made of sterner stuff” Buhari long sold to the Nigerian public, he broke down like a suckling to the embarrassment of the audience at the Abuja town hall event, without provocation, on Wednesday.

The campaign group said Buhari’s queer and suspicious behaviour came on the heels of the poor showing of the CPC at the National Assembly election on Saturday, adding that his action followed immediately on the heels of the collapse of the renewed alliance talks between the CPC and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

The council said it saw the action as a desperate measure from his bag of tricks to whip up sentiments in his favour from unwary voters which, it said, Buhari had preconceived by rehearsing it privately before the so-called town hall meeting.

“His target is clearly unwary voters, hence he made sure that even the most obscure and fringe North-centered media house was invited for the event,” it said.

We all enjoy the benefits of the Internet, and for many of us it is also an indispensable tool for work, education, and communication.  While time spent on the Internet can be hugely productive, for some people compulsive Internet use can interfere with daily life, work and relationships.

When you feel more comfortable with your online friends than your real ones, or you can’t stop yourself from playing games, gambling, or compulsively surfing, even when it has negative consequences in your life, then you may be using the Internet too much. Learn about the signs and symptoms of Internet addiction and how you can get balance back in your online life.

What is Internet addiction or computer addiction?

Internet Addiction, otherwise known as computer addiction, online addiction, or internet addiction disorder (IAD), covers a variety of impulse-control problems, including:

  • Cybersex Addiction – compulsive use of Internet pornography, adult chat rooms, or adult fantasy role-play sites impacting negatively on real-life intimate relationships.
  • Cyber-Relationship Addiction – addiction to social networking, chat rooms and messaging to the point where virtual, online friends become more important than real-life relationships with family and friends.
  • Net Compulsions – such as compulsive online gaming, gambling, stock trading, or compulsive use of online auction sites such as eBay, often resulting in financial and job-related problems.
  • Information Overload – compulsive web surfing or database searching, leading to lower work productivity and less social interaction with family and friends.
  • Computer Addiction – obsessive playing of off-line computer games, such as Solitaire or Minesweeper, or obsessive computer programming.

The most common of these Internet addictions are cybersex, online gambling, and cyber-relationship addiction.

Healthy vs. unhealthy Internet use

The Internet provides a constant, ever-changing source of information and entertainment. Email, blogs, social networks, and message boards allow for both public and anonymous communication about any topic. But how much is too much Internet usage?

Each person’s Internet use is different. You might need to use the Internet extensively for your work, for example, or you might rely heavily on social networking sites to keep in touch with faraway family and friends. Spending a lot of time online only becomes a problem when it absorbs too much of your time, causing you to neglect your relationships, your work, school, or other important things in your life. If you keep repeating compulsive Internet behavior despite the negative consequences in your offline life, then it’s time to strike a new balance.

How do people become addicted to the Internet?

To relieve unpleasant and overwhelming feelings

Many people turn to the Internet in order to manage unpleasant feelings such as stress, loneliness, depression, and anxiety. When you have a bad day and are looking for a way to escape your problems or to quickly relieve stress or self-soothe, the Internet can be an easily accessible outlet. Losing yourself online can temporarily make feelings such as loneliness, stress, anxiety, depression, and boredom evaporate into thin air. As much comfort as the Internet can provide, though, it’s important to remember that there are healthier (and more effective) ways to keep difficult feelings in check. These may include exercising, meditating, using sensory relaxation strategies, and practicing simple breathing exercises.

For many people, an important aspect of overcoming Internet and computer addiction is to find alternate ways to handle these difficult feelings. Even when your Internet use is back to healthy levels, the painful and unpleasant feelings that may have prompted you to engage in unhealthy Internet use in the past will remain. So, it’s worth spending some time thinking about the different ways you intend to deal with stressful situations and the daily irritations that would normally have you logging on.

Risk factors for Internet addiction and computer addiction

You are at greater risk of Internet addiction if:

  • You suffer from anxiety. You may use the Internet to distract yourself from your worries and fears. An anxiety disorder like obsessive-compulsive disorder may also contribute to excessive email checking and compulsive Internet use.
  • You are depressed. The Internet can be an escape from feelings of depression, but too much time online can make things worse. Internet addiction further contributes to stress, isolation and loneliness.
  • You have any other addictions. Many Internet addicts suffer from other addictions, such as drugs, alcohol, gambling, and sex.
  • You lack social support. Internet addicts often use social networking sites, instant messaging, or online gaming as a safe way of establishing new relationships and more confidently relating to others.
  • You’re an unhappy teenager, you might be wondering where you fit in and the Internet might feel more comfortable than real life friends.
  • You are less mobile or socially active than you are used to. For example, you may be coping with a new disability that limits your ability to drive. Parenting very young children can make it hard to leave the house or connect with old friends.
  • You are stressed. While some people use the Internet to relieve stress, it can have a counterproductive effect. The longer you spend online, the higher your stress levels will be.

Signs and symptoms of Internet addiction or computer addiction

Are you addicted to the Internet?

Take the Internet Addiction Test, provided by the Center for Internet Addiction and Recovery.

Signs and symptoms of Internet addiction vary from person to person. For example, there are no set hours per day or number of messages sent that indicate Internet addiction. But here are some general warning signs that your Internet use may have become a problem:

  • Losing track of time online. Do you frequently find yourself on the Internet longer than you intended? Does a few minutes turn in to a few hours? Do you get irritated or cranky if your online time is interrupted?
  • Having trouble completing tasks at work or home. Do you find laundry piling up and little food for dinner in the house because you’ve been busy online? Perhaps you find yourself working late more often because you can’t complete your work on time — then staying even longer when everyone else has gone home so you can surf the Web freely.
  • Isolation from family and friends. Is your social life suffering because of all the time you spend online? Are you neglecting your family and friends? Do you feel like no one in your “real” life — even your spouse — understands you like your online friends?
  • Feeling guilty or defensive about your Internet use. Are you sick of your spouse nagging you to get off the computer and spend time together? Do you hide your Internet use or lie to your boss and family about the amount of time you spend on the computer and what you do while online?
  • Feeling a sense of euphoria while involved in Internet activities. Do you use the Internet as an outlet when stressed, sad, or for sexual gratification or excitement? Have you tried to limit your Internet time but failed?

Physical symptoms of Internet addiction

Internet or computer addiction can also cause physical discomfort such as:

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (pain and numbness in hands and wrists)
  • Dry eyes or strained vision
  • Back aches and neck aches; severe headaches

Internet addiction: Cybersex and pornography

While online pornography and cybersex addictions are types of sexual addiction, special challenges on the Internet include its relative anonymity and ease of access. People can spend hours on the net in the privacy of their own home, and engage in fantasies impossible in real life.

Compulsively spending hours on the Internet viewing pornography or engaging in other cybersex activities can adversely affect real-life relationships, career, and emotional health.

What’s the difference between healthy and unhealthy sexuality?

For most adults, healthy sexuality is an integrated life experience. Sex with partners, with self, or as a part of exploring new relationships is usually a pleasurable act of choice. For sexual addicts however, sexual behavior can be most often defined by words such as driven, compulsive and hidden. Unlike healthy sex that is integrated into relationships, sexual addicts use sex as a means to cope, to handle boredom, anxiety and other powerful feelings or as a way to feel important, wanted or powerful.

Internet addiction: Online gambling

While gambling has been a well-documented problem for years, the availability of Internet gambling has made gambling far more accessible. It has also made it harder for recovering addicts to avoid relapse. Online or virtual casinos are open all day, every day for anyone with Internet access. People who don’t live within close proximity of a traditional casino or betting track, for example, or even those who are too young to gain access, now find it much easier to gamble online.

Other net compulsions

Net compulsions such as compulsive stock trading or online auction shopping can be just as financially and socially damaging as online gambling. eBay addicts, for example, may wake up at strange hours in order to be online for the last remaining minutes of an online auction. They may purchase things they don’t need and can’t afford in order to experience the excitement of placing the winning bid.
Compulsive online gamers can isolate themselves for many hours at a time participating in virtual reality or online fantasy games, neglecting other aspects of their lives such as work and family.

Internet addiction: Cyber-relationships

When used responsibly, the Internet can be a great place to interact socially, meet new people, and even start romantic relationships. However, online relationships can often be more intense than those in real life. Our fantasies are given free reign and the idea of being with our online love can exceed all realistic expectations. Since few real-life relationships can compete with these wild, fantasy relationships, the Internet addict will prefer to spend more and more time with their online friends.

Another problem is that about 50% of people online lie about their age, weight, job, marital status, or gender. When online friends meet and the real-life person fails to match the online persona, it can create profound emotional disappointment.

Self-help tips for breaking your Internet addiction

The following are tools to get your Internet use under control. While you can put many of these in place yourself, make sure you get some outside support as well. It’s all too easy to slip back into old patterns of usage, especially if you use the Internet heavily for work.

  • Recognize any underlying problems that may support your Internet addiction. If you are struggling with depression, stress, or anxiety, for example, Internet addiction might be a way to self-soothe rocky moods. Have you had problems with alcohol or drugs in the past? Does anything about your Internet use remind you of how you used to drink or use drugs to numb out? Recognize if you need to address treatment in these areas, such as therapy, or returning to group support meetings.
  • Build your coping skills. Perhaps blowing off steam on the Internet is your way of coping with stress or angry feelings. Or maybe you have trouble relating to others, or are excessively shy with people in real life. Building skills in these areas will help you weather the stresses and strains of daily life without resorting to compulsive Internet use.

See: Raising Emotional Intelligence for more information on building your coping skills

  • Strengthen your support network. The more relationships you have in real life, the less you will need the Internet for social interaction. Set aside dedicated time each week for friends and family. If you are shy, try finding common interest groups such as a sports team, education class, or book reading club. This allows you to interact with others and let relationships develop naturally.

Modify your Internet use step by step:

  • To help you see problem areas, keep a log of how much you use the Internet for non-work or non-essential activities. Are there times of day that you use the Internet more? Are there triggers in your day that make you stay online for hours at a time when you planned for just 5 minutes?
  • Set goals for when you can use the Internet. For example, you might try setting a timer, scheduling use for certain times of day, or making a commitment to turn off the computer at the same time each night. Or you could reward yourself with a certain amount of online time once you’ve completed a homework assignment or finished the laundry, for instance.
  • Replace your Internet usage with healthy activities. If you are bored and lonely, resisting the urge to get back online can be very difficult. Have a plan for other ways to fill the time, such as going to lunch with a coworker, taking a class, or inviting a friend over.

Tips for dealing with Internet addiction:

  • Ask yourself, “What am I missing out on when I spend so much time on the “Net?” Write these activities down and decrease your Internet time to do some of these activities.
  • Set reasonable Internet use goals and stick to them. Take frequent breaks, at least 5 minutes each hour, and do some other activity.
  • Alter your routine to break your usage patterns. If you spend evenings on the Internet, start limiting your use to mornings.
  • Seek out friends and acquaintances who “couldn’t care less” about the Internet. Take time to appreciate the fact that all life is not yet online.
  • Stay connected to the offline world. Visit newsstands, book and music stores, and participate in entertainment such as museums, music, and live theater. Novels and poetry readings are hard to experience online.
  • Treat the Internet as a tool. Stay focused on the fact that the Internet is a means to an end. Plan your strategy—whether you’re looking for information or entertainment—with the end in mind and you’ll save valuable time.

Internet addiction treatment, counseling, and support

Therapy and counseling for Internet addiction

Find help for Internet addiction

See Related Links for a directory of behavioral therapists from the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT).

Therapy can give you a tremendous boost in controlling Internet use. Cognitive-behavioral therapy provides step-by-step ways to stop compulsive Internet behaviors, working with a therapist on changing your thoughts and behaviors surrounding Internet use. Therapy can also help you learn healthier ways of coping with uncomfortable emotions. And if depression or anxiety is contributing to your excessive Internet use, therapy can also address that problem.

If your Internet use is affecting your partner directly, as with excessive cybersex or online affairs, marriage counseling can help you work through these challenging issues. Marriage counseling can also help you reconnect with your partner if you have been using the Internet for most of your social needs.

Group support for Internet addiction

Since Internet addiction is relatively new, it can be hard to find a real life support group dedicated to the issue like Alcoholics Anonymous or Gamblers Anonymous. If that is a simultaneous problem for you, however, attending groups can help you work through your alcohol or gambling problems as well.  Sex Addicts anonymous may be another place to try if you are having trouble with cybersex. There may also be groups where you can work on social and coping skills, such as for anxiety or depression.

There are some Internet addiction support groups on the Internet. However, these should be used with caution. Although they may be helpful in orienting you and pointing you in the right direction, you need real life people to best benefit from group support.

Helping a friend or family member with Internet addiction

Tips to helping others with Internet addiction

  • Be a good role model. Manage the Internet and computer use in your own life well.
  • Introduce the Internet addict to other people who handle their Internet use sensibly.
  • Get your friend involved in non-Internet related interests.
  • Talk to your friend about your concerns with their Internet use.
  • Support their desire for change if they think they have a problem.
  • Encourage them to seek professional counseling.

Helping a child or teen with an Internet addiction

It’s a fine line as a parent. If you severely limit a child or teen’s Internet use, they might rebel and go to excess. But you should monitor computer use, supervise computer activity and get your child help if he or she needs it. If your child or teen is showing signs of Internet addiction, there are things that you can do to help:

  • Encourage other interests and social activities. Get your child out from behind the computer screen. Expose kids to other hobbies and activities, such as team sports, Scouts, and afterschool clubs.
  • Monitor computer use and set clear limits. Make sure the computer is in a common area of the house where you can keep an eye on your child's online activity, and limit time online. This will be most effective if you as parents follow suit. If you can’t stay offline, chances are your children won’t either.
  • Talk to your child about underlying issues. Compulsive computer use can be the sign of deeper problems. Is your child having problems fitting in? Has there been a recent major change, like a move or divorce, which is causing stress?
  • Get help. Teenagers often rebel against their parents but if they hear the same information from a different authority figure, they may be more inclined to listen.Try a sports coach, doctor, or respected family friend. Don’t be afraid to seek professional counseling if you are concerned about your child.

Master Efurueze is among 18 people charged with attempted murder for participation in the attack on Messrs. Obasanjo and Ohakim.

Notable among the accused is Prince Madumere, the chief of staff to the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Rochas Okorocha. At the resumed hearing of the suit yesterday the presiding magistrate, V.C Isiguzo, while delivering ruling on the application for bail for the accused, explained that her court has no jurisdiction on two of the charges because they are punishable by life imprisonment.

Mrs. Isiguzo, however, turned down the accused's request to be granted bail until the conclusion of the substantive suit. The chief magistrate explained that her reason for denying the accused bail is that they had been charged with felony which carries a punishment of life imprisonment if found guilty. She said the offence is a serious one and, therefore, should not be treated lightly. Speaking to newsmen at the end of the court session, Greg Okemiri, the counsel representing the 12th to the 16th accused persons, while expressing his displeasure with the ruling of the magistrate, hinted that the reason the application was denied may be political. He was also angered by the continued detention of Master Efurueze who, he explained, under the law of the country, by virtue of being a minor, is considered incapable of committing a crime.

"The law describes him as not capable of committing crime yet," he said. "All these things are in our law. Sometimes I feel very sad that we do not want to do things right. You see someone who the law describes as not capable of committing a crime yet, and you remand him in an adult prison." Mr. Okemiri, however, stated that he has taken steps to see that the boy is released soon. The case was adjourned to May 30, for further hearing.

AN electronic repairer who lives on Bello Street, Felele, Ibadan, Oyo State, has reportedly sent packing his wife and two-year-old child for voting for the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), instead of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the National Assembly election last Saturday.

According to a source who craved anonymity, the said man, in his 40s, had boasted that he would send his wife and child packing from his house for voting for ACN instead of PDP.

The man, who was also said to have dreamt of having Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala elected as governor of Oyo State, after observing fasting and prayers, openly campaigned for the Oyo State governor.

He stated further that Governor Alao-Akala had done great for the people in the area during his first term by attending quickly to their calls to repair the road on his street, compared to the previous governors, a development that made him to do anything within his capacity to support the second term bid of Chief Alao-Akala.

12166306301?profile=originalSerena Williams is back on the tennis court for the first time since a health scare sidelined her two months ago. And, in typical Serena fashion, she did so in style:

What, you expected the woman who once wore this to a US Open to practice in a tennis skirt and sweater vest? If Serena is coming back, it's going to be with some gusto.

The 13-time Grand Slam champion had been hinting at a return to the court for the past few days on her Twitter account. Cryptic messages like "my life starts today" and "back on the shakes" foreshadowed Tuesday's practice session, which was announced in the third-person and later confirmed by her agent.

The outfit, however, was a complete surprise. It's not like Serena had given any warnings that she had recently watched Molly Ringwald in "Pretty In Pink" or was reading "Catwoman" comic books.

There's no word as of yet on when Serena will return to competitive play. It'll come in time. For now, just seeing her on the court with a racquet in her hand is good news enough.

An international operation involving Spanish police, the FBI and the UK’s Serious Organised Crime Agency has uncovered a new Nigerian letters scam run by an international network believed to have defrauded more than 11 million € through the promise of a share in non-existent inheritances.
Eleven people are in custody on charges of fraud, falsifying documents, money laundering and illicit association.
The Interior Ministry said in a press release on Tuesday that most of the network’s victims were in the U.S., Australia, Mexico and EU countries. A bank employee was a key member of the network in helping to dupe the victims into believing the claims made in the letters were true.
He was employed as chief teller and head of the bank’s foreign currency department, receiving the victims in his office and convincing them that the funds they had been promised had been deposited in the Bank of Spain.
The network had been under investigation since September of 2009 and is understood to have sent out thousands of letters from Spain, mainly from Madrid and its surrounding area, every day.
The amounts defrauded from each person ranged from 50,000 € up to as much as 2 million €.
114 bank accounts held in the suspects’ names have been blocked as part of the operation. Police also seized 7 top range vehicles, boxes containing forged US dollar notes, in addition to letters, labels and envelopes ready to be sent off to their next potential victims.

The window of opportunity is quickly closing on South African double-amputee Oscar Pistorius’s dream of competing in this year’s IAAF world championships.
With team selections expected in late June and final qualifying due by mid August, Pistorius must shave more than three-tenths of a second off his personal best to be considered for South Africa’s team in the 400m.
“I am confident I can do it,” said Pistorius, a double amputee who is famously called “Blade Runner” because he races with prosthetic blades of carbon fibre.
Pistorius will use 400m competitions at Ostrava, Czech Republic, on May 31; Eugene, Oregon, on June 4 and New York on June 11 as building blocks for a career he hopes will take him not only to the world championships but to London in 2012 for both the Olympics and Paralympics.
He will be aiming for a time of 45.25s, the qualifying standard for the August 27-September 4 world championships in Daegu, South Korea. His fastest time is 45.61s set in March.
He could challenge that mark in New York since American Jeremy Wariner, the 2004 Olympic champion and the fastest 400 metres runner currently competing, will also run, organisers said on Tuesday.
“I broke my personal best by a half second,” Pistorius said during a telephone interview from Pretoria arranged by New York meeting sponsors Adidas. “I have to come down another 0.3 seconds. It is going to be quite a tough task.”
But Pistorius, who was born without fibulas and had both his legs amputated below the knee when he was 11 months old, believes he has found a way.
“The first 200 metres ... That is where I need to really improve my time. I need to sharpen up and not be scared and run out hard,” he said. “The better you can get off in the beginning, the better you can find your rhythm.”
Unfair advantage
No stranger to racing able-bodied athletes, Pistorius has not allowed either legal challenges or scientific tests that attempted to determine whether his prosthetic blades gave him an unfair advantage to deter his desire to face the best.
He failed to achieve the qualifying time for the Beijing Olympics but sprinted to gold in the 100m, 200m and 400m at the Paralympics that followed.
Pistorius, 24, hopes to follow up the world championships with races in the London Olympics and Paralympics, something only five other athletes have accomplished.
“I want to run the 400 in the Olympics, and the 100, 200, 400 and 4x100m relay in the Paralympics,” Pistorius said.
“I am sure I will be quiet tired after the 400 in the Olympics but I believe these opportunities only come once in a life.”

The Eagles, formerly ranked 39th in the world, are now in the 38th position. Resounding victories over Ethiopia in the Africa Nations Cup qualifying series and another over Kenya in an international friendly match see the Super Eagles move up just one spot in the latest monthly rankings released by world football governing body, FIFA, yesterday.

The Eagles formerly ranked 39th in the world are now in the 38th position while still maintaining their ranking as the fourth best team on the African continent.

Thus, the expectation of some football fans that the 4-0 drubbing of Ethiopia and the 3-0 victory over Kenya will translate into an appreciable leap has been dashed.

The Black Stars of Ghana remain Africa’s highest-ranked team moving up the table to now occupy the 15th spot in the world.

Côte d’Ivoire, in the 21st spot, and Egypt, in the 36th postion, are the other African countries ranked ahead of Nigeria in the April FIFA rankings.

Meanwhile, finalists at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, Spain and the Netherlands continue to stride clear atop the world rankings as they maintain the 1st and 2nd spot respectively after recording victories in their recent UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying games.

Significant movements

There was however significant movements below as five-time world champions, Brazil clawed back to third spot from her previous 5th position while Germany dropped one place to 4th, same for Argentina that now occupy the 5th position.

Also, Italy returned to the top ten after an absence of seven months as the Azzuris leapt from the 11th spot to the 9th position.

There were also some major movers in the top 50 of this month’s ranking, with Israel (33rd, up 25), Belgium (37th, up 25), Albania (50th, up 23) and Algeria (40th, up 15) making the biggest climbs of the teams in the top half-century.

Four teams - Montenegro (24th, up 1), Albania, Libya (58th, up 13) and Antigua and Barbuda (100th, up 1) - are currently in their highest-ever position since the launch of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking in 1993.

Ranking formula

124 international matches have been played since the last edition of the ranking five weeks ago, which has doubled the total number of games played in 2011 to 248.

Of these 124 matches, 50 were qualifiers for confederation championships (29 in UEFA, 21 in CAF). The other 74 games were friendlies.

For the FIFA rankings, points are calculated on a match-by-match basis using a formula which takes into consideration the result, whether it was a tournament, qualification or friendly match, the strength of the opposition based on their ranking position and the strength of the region they are from. If a team loses, they receive no points.

Ribadu is still running

As alliance talk between the Action Congress of Nigeria and the Congress for Progressive Change breaks down, the ACN national chairman, Bisi Akande has announced that it's presidential candidate, Nuhu Ribadu will contest Saturday's election.

Mr. Akande said in a press statement today that though discussions were held between the two parties to explore opportunities of coming together to fight the presidential of the Peoples Democratic Party, Goodluck Jonathan, such talks have not led to any alliance.

"We as a party that believes in democratic values have therefore decided that in the overall interest of the parties involved, our democracy as well as our country, it is better for each of the parties to go into the presidential election on its own platform," Mr Akande said.

He however did not rule out the possibility that talks will resume if the presidential election ended without a clear winner, thus requiring a run off.

More from Tribune:

AHEAD of Saturday’s presidential election, the much touted possible alliance between the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), against the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), at

the poll has finally collapsed.

National chairman of the ACN, Chief Bisi Akande, who disclosed this at a press conference in Abuja, on Wednesday, lamented that all efforts to either forge an alliance or merge with the CPC had failed, as the leadership of the CPC was foot-dragging on the negotiations.

Chief Akande, who confirmed that the ACN had been receiving several overtures and representations from the PDP presidential candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan, through political associates, friends, traditional rulers and other well-meaning Nigerians, lamented that the ACN could not work with the PDP because of ideological barriers.

He said: “We have ideological barrier with the PDP, that is why we cannot work together. But we in ACN believe in the ideology of the CPC and we have respect for its leadership; so, we are ready to form alliance with the party or merge with it to fight the PDP but unfortunately, there has not been any pact with them because they are not forthcoming.”

According to Chief Akande, “it is true that President Jonathan has been reaching out to us in the ACN in recent times, through our friends, political associates, traditional rulers and other well-meaning Nigerians, but we cannot work with him because of the company he keeps in the PDP. We like him as a person and we have a lot of respect for him.”

According to Chief Akande, “the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), wishes to inform all its teeming supporters as well as all Nigerians that there is no alliance between the party and the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), ahead of Saturday’s presidential election.

“While it is true that representatives of both parties have engaged in talks aimed at forging an alliance that could dislodge the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the clueless party that has frittered away the huge opportunities that could have transformed our great country in the past 12 years, we regret to announce that such talks have not led to any alliance,” he lamented.

Consequently, he said, “we, as a party that believes in democratic values, have, therefore, decided that in the overall interest of the parties involved, our democracy, as well as our country, it is better for each of the parties to go into the presidential election on its own platform.”

He, however, said that if at the end of the election on Saturday there was no clear winner, the ACN would take a decision on which way to go in the overall interest of all Nigerians.

Chief Akande also debunked speculations that a chieftain of the ACN, Senator Bola Tinubu, had a secret deal with President Jonathan on the presidential election, saying “this is not true. I have been with Senator Tinubu since Monday. We have been attending meetings together; there was no time he went to meet with President Jonathan. He never boarded any presidential jet as reported in the media.”

Chief Akande recalled how the presidential candidate of the CPC, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), in 2006 suddenly abandoned then Action Congress (AC) after being in robust discussion with the party throughout 2005 to contest the 2007 election on the ticket of the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP).

Again, he said the party resumed discussions with Buhari in October 2010 over the 2011 elections, after he (Buhari) personally visited him (Akande) at his Ogudu Lagos home on the need to work together.

As a result of this, the ACN leadership set up a three-man committee made up of Mr Rauf Aregbesola, now governor of Osun State; Dr Kayode Fayemi, Ekiti State governor and former governor of Ekiti State, Mr Niyi Adebayo, to iron out areas of agreement with Buhari’s team.

The committee submitted its report on October 25, only to later discover that the Buhari team had entered into an agreement with the International Centre for Reconstruction and Development (ICRD), also known as Save Nigeria Group and had resolved that the CPC would produce the president while SNG would produce the vice-president in an agreement that was witnessed and signed by Dr Almajiri Geidam and Aminu Bello Masari for theCPC and Dr Gbolahan B. Bakare and Yinka Odumakin for the SNG.

Africa has its own Mark Zuckerbergs, Andrew Masons, Mark Pincuses, Larry Pages and Sergey Brins. But it lacks its own Yuri Milners, John Doerrs, Vinod Khoslas and Y Combinators.
I recently read Parmy Olson’s interview with Yuri Milner on Forbes’s recent Billionaires issue. It is riveting stuff. Milner, a Russian billionaire venture capitalist, has made a pile of money investing in some of the web’s most brilliant success stories- Facebook, Zynga and Groupon. These companies have rewritten the rules of social networking, connected the world and revolutionized our shopping experiences. They have shaped our lives, influenced popular culture, and brought in stellar returns for their investors- people like Mr. Milner.
But as I read the article, I could not help but ask myself the pertinent yet habitually unanswered question: What about Africa? Why hasn’t a globally-renown, groundbreaking software, social network or mobile application ever emerged from the continent?
From my experiences, I have discovered that Africa equally has its own plethora of techies with earth-shaking ideas, rock-solid business plans and the commercial know-how required to transform a concept into a world-class business concern. There is no shortage of capacity. Africa has some extremely intelligent techpreneurs.  Last year, a Kenyan mobile software developer and entrepreneur, John Waibochi, beat several other software developers from the U.S, Canada and India to win the Nokia Innovation Challenge Award. It came with $1 million in prize money. Today, his company, VirtualCity develops pioneering mobile software that’s extremely successful in East African markets. Then there is Mark Shuttleworth, a maverick South African Internet tycoon who founded Thawte, a web security and certificate authority company. Thawte became so successful that it was snapped up by VeriSign (VRSN) for $575 million.
There is also Ory Okolloh, a remarkable Kenyan lady who founded Ushahidi, a hugely popular company that develops open source software for information collection. She recently left Ushahidi to take a job as Google’s Policy Manager for Africa.
Last December in South Africa, I met a remarkable young lady who has developed a voice-based mobile application which helps farmers track the oestrus stages of their cows. It’s amazing. She’s been looking to raise capital to commercialize her invention, and there’s definitely a market for her product, but there are no venture capitalists willing to gamble on her idea.
Africans can create hugely successful tech products that will sweep the world off its feet. There are several entrepreneurs out there waiting to break through, but their ideas might never see the light of day because of a lack of seed finance. This is the reason Africa might never produce a Facebook, Groupon, Zynga or Google: There are no venture capital firms in Africa to fund these ventures. It’s unfortunate. And even if, by any little chance they actually do exist, they possess a flagrant disregard for technology and the very crucial role it is going to play in the future. As a result, they are unwilling to fund this sector and give it the acknowledgement it deserves.
Africa is undergoing a technology renaissance. More than ever before, the population is becoming more technologically-inclined, more web-dependent. With the right financing, our entrepreneurs can put Africa on the global map of technological innovation.
But until its financiers and the self-proclaimed ‘venture capitalists’ are easily accessible and listen to these entrepreneurs, Africa may never have its own answers to such internationally famed corporations like Google, Facebook, Zynga and the rest of them.  Africa needs several Y Combinator-type firms who will believe in and support the dreams of entrepreneurs and get those big ideas out of the boxes and into the pages of history. Africa’s techies are equally as smart, gifted and visionary and if supported can transform big ideas into money-making, world-class companies that’ll change the world.
So, will the venture capitalists please stand up?
