The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, as well as Non Academic Staff Union of the University of Benin protested today and shut down the university.
They closed all the gates leading into the university. The protest resulted in a heavy traffic jam on the Lagos-Benin highway.
The protesters sang songs demanding for the implementation of the salary increase approved by the Federal Government.
A union member, Mr. Kenneth Agbovo, told P.M.NEWS that their leaders were in a meeting with the university authorities, when our correspondent called.
One of the affected staff, Ahmed Domingo, said they will paralyse the university until their demands are met.
The students who reside outside the campus and pupils of the university staff school could not enter the school this morning as some of them were turned back.
The Public Relations Officer of Uniben Mr. U. Osaretin declined to pick his call.
Yesterday, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Godwin Osayuki Oshodin appealed to aggrieved staff to exercise patience and that all their demands will be met. The plea fell on deaf ears.
