JOS — THE Movement for the Survival of Plateau People, MOSOP, has condemned the attempt by some members of Plateau State House ofAssembly to impeach Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State last week. Thegroup said the move would have thrown the state into another round ofpolitical crisis.

This was stated in a press statement by its national President, Mr. Aliyu Babu Zungdet, weekend, and made available to Vanguard. It said:“We the people of Plateau State are embarrassed by the actions of our‘honourable’ members over an ‘honourable’ act of the governor, carriedout in good faith and for the interest of the public.

“We are now convinced that Governor Jang’s tenure is a bold departure from the rotten past when governors connive with legislatorsto plunder and loot public funds. Evidences of his prudence andaccountability are the numerous roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, electricity, water, agricultural development, etc, across the state inless than four years of his administration.”

Allegation

The crux of the matter, according to the statement, was the Governor’s alleged petition to Independent Corrupt Practises and othercrimes Commission, ICPC, over constituency funds in the legislative armof government. The Governor in the said petition was said to have urgedthe commission to investigate the entire 24 members of the House.

Howevr, 10 members who were not comfortable with the move allegedly went underground to improvise ‘slippery grounds’ to impeach theGovernor.

According to MOSOP, “the exercise though in futility will have many implications on the polity of the state for a very long to come. We,however, commend the people of Plateau State for resisting theimpeachment move by the members of the Plateau State House of Assembly.

“If the members have not abused their constituency funds let them not be afraid. We also want to ask: why are the honourable members justrealising that Governor Jang have diverted local government electionfund now that they are being investigated by ICPC?

“The local government election was done over two years ago. Just as we want the ICPC to complete their investigations, we condemn theimpeachment plot of the House and consider it a diversionary antic.

“We, therefore, want to use this opportunity to call on the legislators to apologise to the good people and Governor of PlateauState for attempting to draw the hand of progress backwards.”
