NIS Arrest 20 Human Traffickers

ABUJA-The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has paraded 20 men arrested in connection with trafficking in persons.It said it would hand over the suspects to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for prosecution.Mr Ekpedeme King, Public Relations Officer of the NIS, told journalists at a news conference that the suspects plied their illegal trade from Nigeria to Niger Republic and across the desert to Europe.He said that NIS officers in Kano arrested the suspects who are Nigerians and Cameroonians between Friday, March 27 and Sunday, March 29.According to him, the syndicate consists of transporters and drivers from Edo State to persons who act as agents of human traffickers at two principal motor parks in Kano, the Unguwa Uku and Kofar Ruwa Motor Parks.“The victims, usually from the southern part of the country and Cameroon, are transported through two principal transport companies.“The victims are transported to Kano along with regular passengers and often disembark at Kwanar Dangora or at designated points before the Unguwa Uku Motor Park“The principal link of the traffickers at Unguwa Uku, one Nasiru Mai Nasara, popularly known as ``Smally’’, is the agent of the ring master, one Alhaji Marwa, a Nigerien,’’ King said.He said that the 22-year old “Smally’’, who is the principal collector of victims from the transport companies, charged N2,250 per victim.“Friday Agazuma, a 40-year-old Nigerian, is a driver in one of the companies used to transport victims from Edo to Kano State.“Agazuma confessed that on one occasion, Alhaji Marwa paid him N12,000 for delivering three victims.Source: nigerian Observer
