Angioplasty In India - The Best Treatment At A Competitive Cost

When a person suffers a heart attack, ideally, he/she is treated withAngioplasty and this should bedone within the first 1-1.5 hours i.e. the golden hour after the attack. Any treatment beyond this time frame can damage the heart muscle cells irreversibly. This type of treatment is called a PAMI orPrimary Angioplasty. Angioplasty is the most common medical procedure used for unblocking the blocked coronary arteries which decrease the regular blood flow to the heart. The Angioplasty procedure is performed using a catheter with a balloon at its tip which is inflated to create a specific pressure. The applied pressure is then used to compress the plaque and widen the lumen of the blocked artery.

Type of angioplasty ideal for heart attack patients

Primary angioplasty usually gives ideal results and is referred to as PAMI (Primary angioplasty In Acute Myocardial Infarction). Results say that it prevents more than 50% deaths occurring due to heart attacks and helps in avoiding repeated heart attacks and failing heart pumps. An angioplasty procedure requires 2 to 3 days (on an average) of hospitalization followed by diet modification, lifestyle changes, and appropriate medications. The patientalso requiresto maintain proper sugar levels, proper blood pressure, & cholesterol levels.

Why Angioplasty Procedure Is Done?

There can be different reasons involved for undergoing angioplastyprocedure.

Advantages –

  • Serious or Regularangina which doesn’t respond well to medicationsand lifestyle changes.
  • Ischemia or critically reduced blood flow to different sections of heart muscle due to narrowed coronary artery.
  • Any artery which has apotential to be treated successfully with angioplasty.
  • If you are healthy to undergo angioplasty procedure.

Disadvantages –

  • Minimum evidence of reduced blood flow to the areas of heart muscle.
  • Symptoms of only small areas of heart at risk when there is absence of disabling angina.
  • There is a risk of complications or death because of associated health problems during angioplasty.
  • Situation when a patient cannot take blood thinning medicines such as aspirin &antiplatelet after stents.
  • Anatomy of your heart and the artery makes it a risky option for stenting or angioplasty.

Angioplasty Procedure

As aninitial step to angioplasty,Cardiac catheterization is performed. Doctors will give you medicines for restand will later numb the site with local anesthesia in the place where catheter is to be inserted. After this, a protective covering called ‘sheath’ which is a thin plastic tube is inserted inside the artery into the groin or sometimes into the arm. The catheter is then passed through the sheath andchannelized inside the blood vessel to arteries covering the heart. Small quantities of contrast material is also injected into the catheter andcaptured using X-ray as it passes through chambers, hearts valves, and major vessels. With the help of these digital pictures doctors can target exact locations in coronary arteries which have been narrowed or blocked due to plaque buildup. Once the decision is made to perform angioplasty, the doctor will move the Balloon catheter inside the artery at the blockage site, inflate the balloon and compress the plaque along the wall of the artery, thus increasing the size of the lumen and facilitating smoother blood flow. The procedure lasts for nearly 90 – 120 minutes. The patient will be required to stay overnight at hospital for post-surgery observation.

Angioplasty Recovery and After-Care

If the angioplasty was done through the artery in groin, the patient will have to sleep flat without bending hislegs to keep the sheath in place. Patients must lay flat for almost 6 hours, even after the sheath is removed at the end of procedure, in order to prevent blood loss. However, after two hours post-surgery, the nurse can raise your head with the help of pillows. You are strictly not allowed to eat or drink except clear liquids until the groin sheath is removed as you can feel nausea during this period. Once you get permission to eat, you will also be advised to follow a strict heart-healthy diet. Some patients may develop swelling, fever, or may experience chest pain, or pain in groin, in that case the patient should immediately inform the nurse or the doctor.
