An opposition fighter has told Al Jazeera up to 20 per cent of Tripoli is still under Muammar Gaddafi's control and fighting continues in pockets of the capital.
There have been reports that the Gaddafi camp is in talks with South Africa over where Gaddafi will take refuge.
Zimbabwe or Angola have been cited as top options.
Senior Libyan rebel figure Mahmoud Jibril said early Monday there are still pockets of resistance in Tripoli from forces loyal to strongman Muammer Gaddafi, after rebels surged into the capital.
"I warn you, there are still pockets of resistance in and around Tripoli," Jibril said in a speech on the opposition television station al-Ahrar.The rebels have re-named the Green Square, Matyrs Square.
