Stop complaining, Ribadu tells Nigerian youth

The former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes commission (EFCC) Nuhu Ribadu yesterday told Nigerian youth to “stop complaining and start taking action” if Nigeria is to progress. Mr Ribadu, who was the guest speaker at the inauguration of the new executives of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) at the Sheraton Hotel, Abuja, advised the youth to emulate the actions of leaders such Nelson Mandela, Kwame Nkrumah, Obafemi Awolowo and Aminu Kano. “At the time these great names were taking on the major battles of their life and of their nations, they were in their 20s, or at most in their 30s. They were young men,” Mr Ribadu said. The former anti-corruption chief cited other examples of Mahatma Ghandi, Anthony Enahoro and Wole Soyinka as men who, right from their youth, had taken on major struggles for the liberation of their people. While condemning the various vices that the Nigerian youth are involved in, Mr Ribadu blamed bad governance as the bane of the problem bedevilling the Nigerian youth. “All over our country today, the most significant thing about our youth is the dramatic sense of shameless betrayal with which this nation has treated those it hopes will extend its future and its civilization,” he said. Mobilize the youth He challenged the members of the NYCN to mobilize Nigerian youth and ensure that at least 10 million Nigerian youth register and vote in the forthcoming election. The NYCN is an umbrella of over 40 youth organisations within the country. New executives of the group are inaugurated every four years.
