Chairman of a Motor Dealers Association in Ogun State has been shot dead by Ogun State Police Command during an ill-fated robbery operations during which a Prado Jeep was allegedly snatched at gun point from its owner in Lagos.
Addressing a press conference Tuesday at the Eleweran Police Headquarters, Abeokuta, where a number of suspects in various crimes were paraded, the Commissioner of Police, Nicholas Nkemdeme said the killed Motor Dealer (whose name was not released because of police investigation) was the leader of the gang which robbed the owner of the vehicle last Sunday.
He said the car owner was going to the church alongside with his family when the bandits struck, snatching the car at gun point, before heading towards Ogun State. The victim was said to have later informed the vehicle tracking company about the development.
It was at this stage the company commenced track monitoring on the stolen vehicle and the police anti-crime patrol attached to Sagamu Division were alerted.
The stolen Jeep was traced to a nearby busy within the area, where it was kept besides three other vehicles. The suspects took to their heels when they sighted the police team combing the area.
However, one of the gang members, who was later identified as Chairman of Motor Dealers Association in the area, summoned courage to engage the police in a gun duel, but the superior fireworks of the police rendered him ineffective.
The Police Commissioner said, in the course of the fire exchange, the man was gunned down, while three other members escaped from the scene. Mr Nkemdeme assured that the suspects would soon be apprehended.
Other vehicles from recovered from the bandits, which were shown to newsmen, include a Peugeot 406 with registration number CW 727 RBC and a Logan Renault with registration number SH 841 AAA.
