A lot of people remember Eric Obuh also known as Vocal Slender a native of Delta State. Vocal Slender was a scavenger turned aspiring artist that was featured on BBC documentary “Welcome to Lagos” last year April. It has been almost one year since the showed aired and his fan base and popularity has skyrocketed. I actually met him through a friend that was working with him in order to help him out of his current situation. When I spoke to Vocal slender I was in admiration of his good spirit, but was saddened to find out many of the future developments we all thought was going to take place actually never came into reality. To find out if his life changed for the better read this interview.

How were you picked to be on the BBC documentary?

I was in the dump entertaining my friends, a lot of the guys were dancing to my song, among the crowd were some white men, they walked up and told me that they will like to film me working and singing that is how they began filming me for the documentary.

Did you think the BBC documentary accurately showcase your life?

Yes, the documentary did. They were able to introduce me to the world.

What happened with CokoBar , are you guys still working together?

I no longer work with CokoBar because he is not truthful. He made a lot of promises but he didn't keep them. He promised that he will give me 400 pounds, he promised a remix of my song ( owo ti ya pa) with Wande Coal, and also promised a musical video. The music video wasn't of good quality so they couldn't air it. Even after my performance in Manchester he didn't pay me, and I know that they paid him.

Has your life improved since being on the BBC?

Life is so hard now, I don't have a house of my own to sleep, I stay with friend, and sometimes it gets so difficult I feel like I am killing myself to live.  I hope that sooner or later my life will change for the better. If I was able to travel to London with CokoBar and was signed on to a label, my life would have improved by now, when I was in the dump I never begged to eat, but now I beg to eat. All the information that CokoBar put out on the internet was to make people believe he has done so much for me, but he never lived up to the promises he made.

How has your music career grown since being on the documentary?

First, I thank GOD for all he has done for me, the documentary has helped my career. Some of my friends who saw what I was going through have decide to help me with my music. Now my music is being played on all radio stations. If not for the documentary I would have still been working on the dump site by now.

What are some future developments for your music?

I would like to release my album, and set up a studio so my brothers can work on there songs, and a record label.

How can the Nigerians support your efforts in the music industry?

They can help me by giving me advice, by encouraging me, by helping me get on different shows, and by telling the world my story. All I need now is there support, so that I will not go back to the dump, I feel I have let all my friends in the dump down, because they believe if I make it they too can make it, but I know my GOD will not let me down.

12166300684?profile=originalThe glamorous lovers’ day celebration on Monday turned bloody at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) when gunmen killed two students. Daily Sun gathered that the clash was between two rival cult groups, namely, Black Axe and the Buccaneers,’ over a female student allegedly snatched by the Capone of the Black Axe for Valentine celebration.

The action of the Capone , the source said did not go down well with the other group leading to the clash.
A student who witnessed the shooting said besides the two cult members who were shot dead, about four others sustained injuries and were ferried out of the campus by their leaders to shield their identity.

The sources said the cult members who carried out the attack were not UNILAG students but members from another campus, adding that the attack was carried out in a commando style with sporadic shooting.
An undergraduate student of English Department told Daily Sun that the Buccaneers’ group attacked the Black Axe members while another student returning from the Mosque said those who carried out the killing were not from UNILAG because they did not cover their faces.

It was learnt that as soon the shooting started, students scampered for safety while others took cover behind the wall and under cars packed around, while others ran into the halls to avoid being hit by stray bullets.
A senior lecturer who confirmed the killings said the university management had met to curtail any reprisal attack while security personnel had taken over the investigation of the deadly cult clash.
When Daily Sun visited the troubled institution yesterday, there was uneasy calm, as most staff and students rebuffed efforts made by the reporters to get their comments.

However, one of the students who resides at Sodeinde Hall, said there was sporadic gunshots outside the premises which caused panic everywhere.
It was gathered that the crisis, which erupted when the students were at the peak of lovers’ day celebration, created stampede on the campus as people ran for safety.

One of the victims of the attack reportedly ran into Sodeinde Hall for help, from where he was taken to the hospital.
Although the Hall Master of Sodeinde Hall declined comments on the issue, one of the officials, who wouldn’t want his name published, said the attack could not be linked to any cult group. He said there was increasing speculation that the perpetrators of the attack could be fighting for love. Efforts made by Daily Sun our reporter to ascertain the identities of the victims were unsuccessful.
The news bulletin of the university, Information Flash (ISSN 08195540) also captured the incident, while assuring the staff and students of the university of adequate security.

“The attention of the universities authorities has been drawn to the incident which occurred in one of the Halls of Residence in the late hours of Monday, February 14, 2011 where two persons were reportedly injured in fracas. The university management has commenced investigation into the unusual incident, in particular at a time when preparation for the first semester examinations due to commence on February 21, 2011 are in top gear. Security has been intensified to ensure safety of life and property on campus. Law enforcement agents have been involved to assist the university in this respect,” it said.
Daily Sun learnt that students are leaving the campus because of the fear of reprisal attack while some parents called their wards on phone to return home until the situation is brought under control.

The Deputy Registrar Information of UNILAG, Mr. Dare Adebisi refused to pick his calls or replied to text message sent to his phone.
When the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Samuel Jinadu (DSP) was called thrice, he promised to contact the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the area and did not call back as at the press time....

Are they running out of cheeks ?

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Borno State Chapter has called on Christians in the state to do everything possible to defend themselves against any aggression and attack by any group or individuals as Christians should no longer fold their arms and watch churches being destroyed and their members killed.

Addresing newsmen at the CAN secretariat in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital on Tuesday, the CAN Chairman, Reverend Yuguda Midurvwa, said the atrocities perpetrated by some group of "unidentified persons" who had taken it upon themselves to annihilate Christians in the state can no longer be condoned saying "enough is enough."

He said while they had visited mayhem on Christians in Borno State, destroying churches and killing Christians without any provocation whatsoever, the Christians though peaceful people who, believe in living peacefully with their neigbours as taught by the Holy Bible, failed to understand the failure of the security agencies in protecting life and property. He said Christians were no more prepared to look on while church members are being silently killed and churches destroyed.

"We call on all members to go back to God in prayer and fasting, we will resist any attack on our people as killings and destruction of our members and churches are still going on without any checks on these criminals," he explained.

Reverend Yuguda further said the decision of CAN Borno State to opt on self defence was informed by attacks on over 12 churches by some Muslim groups and the continuos silent killing of Christians in the state.

448x252.jpgBill first wrote about digital money 15 years ago in his book “The Road Ahead”. These days, he’s excited about financial services being offered in Africa over mobile phones. They provide an easy, safe and affordable way for millions of poor people to send, receive and store money.

When I visited Kenya last December I had a chance to observe M-PESA, which is a mobile money service that is being used by more than 13 million people for storing and transferring money. Services like M-PESA are exciting because financial services of any kind have been available to only 10 percent of the 2.5 billion people who live on less than $2 per day. M-PESA showed me a new world of possibility brought by that great piece of technology, the mobile phone. A recent study found, among other things, that M-PESA allows users to maintain steady levels of consumption, particularly of food, through shocks such as job loss, illness, harvest failure and livestock deaths.

This sense of promise and excitement came through loudly in a recent foundation-hosted Global Savings Forum, which explored a number of approaches to solving the micro-savings challenge.

I participated in a panel discussion about the types of partnerships that can take financial services to every household in developing countries. We discussed how technology-enabled models can allow service providers to focus on particular services or customer segments, and scale them up quickly.

The panel included representatives of different kinds of financial service providers, including a national commercial bank (Equity of Kenya), a global association of community-based banks (World Council of Credit Unions), a promoter of informal village-level savings and loan associations (CARE), and the mobile phone company behind the most successful deployment of mobile financial services to date (Safaricom of Kenya). The panel also included representatives of a global online payments provider (PayPal) and solution providers (MPower Labs and Obopay)...

The discussion began with the dynamic duo of Michael Joseph, outgoing CEO of Safaricom, and James Mwangi, CEO of Equity Bank, talking about their prominent M-KESHO partnership. They have developed a jointly-branded service that connects Equity Bank accounts with M-PESA’s powerful network.

I was interested to hear from both Mr. Joseph and Mr. Mwangi about the challenges involved in such a competitive yet cooperative joint product offering. Both are extremely protective of the powerful brands they have created, and putting them together without diluting either is a concern. I very much welcomed their challenge to other telcos and banks to be bold in their approach.

I was also struck by how Brian Branch, CEO of the World Council of Credit Unions, recognized that scale is a problem for the smaller community-based banks he represents, but also an opportunity. They are seeking ways to band together to find common technology solutions and partner with bigger players with national payment platforms such as Safaricom. This way they can remain true to the interests of the local communities they serve, offering more services at a lower cost.

Technology can be a major force to advance financial inclusion, which can help improve the lives of the poor in the developing world. This is an important focus of the foundation’s efforts. At the Global Savings Forum, we pledged $500 million over five years to help create access to savings accounts that will help increase the financial security of the world’s poorest.

I’m personally very excited about these efforts, which have the potential to replicate in other key markets. As I mentioned at the forum, I look forward to seeing similar partnerships replicate at scale in big countries such as India, Ethiopia and Nigeria.

Aisha, the estranged wife of former governor of Kogi State, Abubabakar Audu has lost her bid to retain a property at 12301 Glen Road, Potomac, Maryland, United States of America.

Aisha was the first lady of Kogi State when Audu was the governor.

A Circuit Court in Montgomery County, Mary-land, United States held that Gold Window, LLC, a company in which Audu is believed to have interest was the rightful owner of the property in dispute.

A copy of the judgment which was delivered on 18th November, 2010 was obtained by our correspondent.

The court held thus, "The plaintiff (Gold Window, LLC) is the lawful title owner of the real property located at 12301 Glen Road, Potomac, Maryland 20854 and is entitled to immediate possession of said property."

The court further held that Aisha Audu (the defendant) was wrongfully in possession of the property.

"The defendant, and any of her guests, agents or anyone else acting in her behest, shall not remove, damage, alter, destroy or diminish any furnishings, appliances, rugs, vehicles, or other property from the home or grounds of the aforementioned real property," the court further ordered.

Audu, and his wife, Aisha, are currently entangled in a legal tussle in United States over allegations of domestic violence.

The judgment brings to end the Peoples Democratic Party government headed by Olagunsoye Oyinlola, who the judges said have been governing the state illegally since 2007.

Following the declaration of Mr Oyinlola as winner of the 2007 election, Mr Aregbesola went to court to challenge the Independent National Electoral Commission's decision..

Prior to the judgement, the two sides had argued their briefs at the last sitting of the court on November 1 when the five-member appeal panel, led by Clara Ogunbiyi reserved judgement on the matter.

There is already wild jubilation across Osun State and civil servants are noticed closing their offices to go home for the weekend.

Eagles pull out of Iran friendly

The friendly match scheduled to hold between Nigeria and Iran at the Azadi Stadium, Tehran, on Wednesday, has been cancelled.

The world football governing body, FIFA, has always tried to dissociate football from politics. But in the cancellation of the supposedly ‘friendly' match between Iran and Nigeria, issues of foreign affairs have definitely impinged on football.

Official sources from both sides have been reluctant to discuss the cancellation, but information on some websites and a member of the Nigeria Football Federation confirmed that indeed the friendly match will not take place.

Nigeria officials told a local website in Nigeria that the unavailability of key players for the Super Eagles due to injuries prompted the cancellation, but the decision has also been seen in the light of cooling diplomatic relations between both countries, based on the interception of a shipment of arms that originated from the Middle-East country that found its way to Nigeria.

A member of the new board of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Deji Tinubu, head, marketing department, confirmed to Nextsports that the friendly match between the Nigeria national team against their Iranian counterparts has been called off.

In a terse text message, Mr. Tinubu said, "Unfortunately, friendly cancelled. The reason was because of technical issues beyond our control."

Musa Amadu, the NFF's acting secretary general, also told The Associated Press on Monday that the match in Tehran had been postponed because Nigeria's star footballers were going to be absent on account of injuries.

When asked if the decision was connected to the arms cache seizure in Lagos on October 12 at Apapa ports, Mr. Amadu, tellingly did not outrightly deny a connnection, but instead responded by saying, "it's for you to speculate."

When Nextsports got in touch with Mr. Amadu to try and have a more detailed chat on the issue, he declined to speak, citiing vital emergency issues that needed tending, adding, "Please call me back later."

Abbas Torabian, director of the International Relations Committee of Iran Football Federation, had said last week that there was no problem between both countries.

"Nigeria will travel to Iran with its big football stars. Nigeria's ban from international football has been lifted by FIFA and the Super Eagles have no problem to play Iran," Mr. Torabian had said.

Iran football coach, Afshin Ghotbi, also released a list of 26 players on Saturday night for the friendly match against Nigeria.

Nigeria has just appointed a new coach for the national team, Samson Siasia, and he was supposed to see the team he is inheriting in the Iran match under the tutelage of the interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen. But that opportunity is now gone and he will have to wait till December 1, when he officially resumes as the Eagles' gaffer.

The friendly match was also supposed to be part of Iran's preparation for the Asian Football Confederation Asian Cup, to be hosted by Qatar in 2011. They lost to Brazil 3-0 in a friendly held in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) last month.

American Lesbian couple kicked out of Mall

Lesbian couple meets with shopping center officials over ouster

A lesbian couple who say they were asked to leave a North Carolina shopping center after sharing a kiss and a hug met with the center's property manager on Saturday.

"We welcomed the opportunity to sit down with the women and offer our sincere regrets over last week's incident," said George York, president of York Properties, which manages the Cameron Village shopping center in Raleigh, North Carolina. The incident took place Wednesday at Cameron Village.

Caitlin Breedlove told CNN affiliate WRAL that she and her partner were being affectionate but appropriate with one another when a security officer asked them to leave the shopping center.

The officer told the couple that they were being inappropriate and that "nobody wants to see that here at Cameron Village," Breedlove said, referring to the couple's homosexuality.

The couple asked to speak to the officer's supervisor...

Dan Palatucci, who manages the Flying Biscuit restaurant at the shopping center, where the couple had eaten before the incident, told WRAL that he voiced concern about the incident to Cameron Village's management.

On Saturday, York said his company is planning additional sensitivity training for its security personnel.

"We apologized that the women were offended, and we affirmed that Cameron Village and York Properties, Inc. have no tolerance for discrimination of any kind and believe all people deserve the right to be treated fairly in their work, homes and daily lives," York said in a statement.

A letter of apology was also sent to the women, he said.

Breedlove is a gay activist, but she says the incident wasn't planned. WRAL reported that the American Civil Liberties Union may take legal action over the episode.

A Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has called for a debate, on the economy, among all the presidential aspirants on the economy.Photo Atiku ? this man looks like a Hitman sha

Abubakar, a former vice-President, made the call after submitting his nomination form at the PDP national secretariat on Tuesday in Abuja.

The Adamawa State- born politician said the economy should be the main issue in the 2011 election campaigns.

“The issue of economic recovery for Nigeria cannot be a matter of wishful thinking nor of rhetoric. It is a subject for rigorous analyses and provision of well-thought, viable, practicable and sustainable strategy,” he said.

Abubakar said that all aspirants must be able to tell Nigerians how they intended to confront the challenges of the economy and reposition it for the benefit of all at the shortest possible time.

He said, “Of all the aspirants that have declared interest in the presidential election, I consider myself the most qualified to address the daunting economic challenges facing the country.

“I am the only one who has successfully managed a business and you need extensive knowledge of the private sector to combine its potential with the authority of the public sector to address this challenge.”

The former vice-president said his approach to resolving the economic crisis in the country was contained in a 47-page Policy Document he presented on August 15, 2010 while announcing his intention to contest the 2011 presidential poll.

He said, “We are faced with a job crisis of monumental proportions. Unless we evolve strategies to dealing with the teeming population of young people churned out almost on a daily basis, we may risk the destruction of the next generation.

“If we fail to channel the energies of this huge population, they could be a potent force for instability and social unrest.”

Abubakar, however, stunned journalists when he said that he was not aware that the President had declared his intention to vie for the PDP ticket.

“I didn’t see it (declaration). Honestly, I didn’t watch it,” he said.

Twenty seven out of the 28 PDP governors were among thousands of people that attended Jonathan’s presidential declaration at the Eagle Square on Saturday in Abuja. The event was shown live by some public and private television stations nationwide.

On the reported move by some politicians to produce a consensus presidential candidate among the Northern aspirants, Abubakar said, “There is a process for the emergence of a consensus candidate in the North. It shows that North is even more united if “they” agree to bring out a consensus candidate.”

He also said he was not aware of the support that Jonathan was getting from the northern states.

Reacting to the challenge, the Presidential Adviser to Jonathan on National Assembly Matters, Senator Mohammed Abba-Aji, said the President was ready for such a debate.

“We are ready for it (debate) anytime. The President has talked about all the aspects of the economy when he declared. If they want more, we are ready for them,” he said.

Another aspirant, who is also the Kwara State Governor, Dr. Bukola Saraki, also expressed readiness for the debate.

“We are ready for the debate. That is what we have been calling for. Without such an issue-based debate, we will not be able to get the best candidate. Saraki is ready for it,” one of the governor’s aides, Mr. Billy Adedamola, said.

IBB "bribes" Journalists

Five months ago, a friend of mine, who edits a national daily, sent me a text message agreeing substantially with my column, ‘The Punch and the rest of us’, except the generalised conclusion that “all (journalists) have sinned and fallen short of the glory of the profession”. There are still some journalists, he submits, who toe the narrow path of integrity. Of course I knew where he was coming from, but I also knew the context in which I had made that statement.

I revisit that statement in light of the stories spewing out of the political beat, specifically on the race for the 2011 presidential elections and how it affects the integrity of news.

As part of the effort to sell his candidature for the presidency, former military president, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) invited as many as 40 journalists to his Minna home on August 14 for an interview. I have heard questions asked about why he should invite journalists to his home instead of a public place if he didn’t have an ulterior motive, and why he should offer monetary gifts to the journalists in the name of paying for their transportation.

One news medium, which has championed this opposition in the open, is the online agency, Sahara Reporters. According to SR each of the journalists received N10 million for heeding Babangida’s call on his presidential ambition. That is N400 million just for one night’s interview from an aspirant yet to win his party’s nomination if it were true. But it was not. When some of the journalists complained about the fictional sum, SR changed the story on August 19, saying it was just “a paltry N250, 000 each”. Rather than admit its initial error SR simply said, “our accountants have told us that going by the number of 40 journalists in attendance, we are still around the same ballpark of N10 million”. So much for credible reporting!

Three days later, SR followed up with ‘IBB and his Rogue Journalists’, accusing the journalists of roguery and professional misconduct; roguery, because they collected money from two sources—their employers who presumably authorised and funded the trip and their news source, IBB; misconduct because it is unethical for them to demand/receive gratification from news sources for their services.

And on August 23 in ‘IBB Nocturnal Press Parley: Punch fires Editorial board Chairman’, SR stayed on top of the story by reporting that Adebolu Arowolo, editorial board chairman of the Punch, had lost his job for going on that trip without his management’s approval..

Xenophobia rears its head in Port Elizabeth as restaurant turns away doctor

Nigerian government officials are fuming over the treatment dished out to Dr Anderson Anyikwa, who works at a state hospital in Port Elizabeth.

The 38-year-old doctor was denied entry to Cubana Latino Café in Port Elizabeth by staff who, he claims, said Nigerians were not welcome in the establishment because they sold drugs.

Vincent Omeokachie, minister of consular matters at the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, this week said he had taken up the matter with South Africa's Department of International Relations and Co-operation.

"We are pursuing the matter to its conclusion. What happened could only happen during the apartheid era. As Nigerians, we can't accept it. It's not only about Dr Anyikwa, it is racial discrimination; we will make sure it doesn't happen to any other foreigner," he said.

The incident, which happened two months ago, is being taken to the Equality Court and is also under investigation by the Human Rights Commission.

Anyikwa has permanent-residence status and has worked for the Department of Health as a senior doctor since 2007.

He met medical colleagues at the restaurant in Summerstrand where he was stopped by a doorman who demanded to know his nationality.

"I was the only one who was asked this question out of the five or six of us. I told the doorman I was from Nigeria. Then he said to me, 'We don't allow Nigerians into our restaurant.'"

Cubana franchise spokesman Lisa Bright was aware of the incident and said they would co-operate if there was a need for any further investigation.

"Basically our doormen abide by the franchise door control. We have a very strict smart-casual dress code and obviously (do not allow in) intoxicated customers.

"We are a multiracial company. We are by no means racist. The franchise has black Zimbabweans and black Congolese guys working there."

Advocate Solomon Moreroa, head of the South African Human Rights Commission in the Eastern Cape, said: "I think it's a question of race. I did some inquiries and it looks like every time you enter that restaurant you're asked where you are from if you are black , If indeed there was discrimination, we will take the matter to the Equality Court."

Anyikwa said he was humiliated as his colleagues tried to explain that he was a medical doctor at the city's Livingston Hospital.

Anyikwa reported the incident at the Humewood police station. Two police members took him back to the restaurant where managers simply pointed to the "right of admission reserved" notice. Police then opened a case of crimen injuria, but later suggested the matter be referred to the Equality Court.

Anyikwa's lawyer, Jacques Ehlers, confirmed that he was preparing to file papers at the Equality Court in Port Elizabeth...

"When Nelson Mandela said, 'South Africa belongs to all who live in it,' he did not exclude residents of Nigerian nationality," said Anyikwa.

Who will be promoted & who will join Bode George ? Who is your favourite mallam ?

Former minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasir El-Rufai, yesterday told a Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja, that it lacked the power to try him over allegations of abuse of office as minister. He said that the proper court to try him was the Abuja High Court.

Counsel to the former minister, Akin Olujimi, filed a preliminary objection saying that the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Matters Commission (ICPC) Act of 2000, which his client had been charged on, had been repealed and so the federal court lacked the jurisdiction to try the matter. “The prosecution acknowledges that the charges stand on nothing,” said Mr Olujimi. “The effect of a repealed law is that it is a nullity, and no charges founded on it can stand.”

In response to the preliminary objection, the prosecution said that the court could assume jurisdiction in the matter because it involved an agency of the federal government and a former minister in the federal cabinet. Trial Judge, Adamu Bello, adjourned ruling on the case to 13th October.

Mr. El-Rufai and two others were accused by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of illegally allocating land in the FCT to friends and relatives, some of whom included Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, the daughter of former president Olusegun Obasanjo. The other accused persons are Altine Jubrin, former director general of the Abuja Geographical Information System, and Ismail Iro, former general manager of the agency. All three men pleaded not guilty.

AC Ribadu & Oshiomole ticket : as Asiwaju Tinubu Drops Vice Presidential Ambition

If he had held Fash close to his breast who knows as Alamiyesegha is reaping the rewards of patient GodFatherhood

Bola Ahmed Tinubu is no longer interested in the vice presidential race and is, instead, strategising on how the Action Congress (AC) would team up with another party to claim the presidency as well as win all the South Western States, Sunday Independent can reveal.

It also emerged that AC may have concluded plan to field the former anti-graft czar, Nuhu Ribadu as its presidential candidate, with Edo Governor and former Labour leader, Adams Oshiomhole, as his running mate.

That appears to be a fantastic political masterstroke, designed to woo the disenchanted Northerners who appeared certain to lose the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s presidential ticket to President Goodluck Jonathan and draw the organised Labour and younger elements who see Ribadu and Oshiomhole as emerging leaders they could count on.

Tinubu, former Lagos Governor and AC foremost financier, has long been rumoured to be in alliance talk with Muhammadu Buhari to float a joint presidential ticket, a very risky arrangement that would have repeated the Social Democratic Party (SDP)’s Muslim-Muslim ticket in the 1993 presidential ballot.

Late Moshood Abiola and Baba Gana Kingibe were Muslims, but the ticket won a landside across the country widely split along ethno-religious lines.

Tinubu’s rumoured VP ambition has seen him criss-cross the length and breadth of Nigeria in the last two years to build bridges as he consulted with top opposition leaders and political parties, including the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).

He is said to have resolved to sit back and map out strategies for the AC to regain all its lost states in the Yoruba-speaking South West geopolitical zone as a bargaining chip for the party in its merger talks with other political parties in the country.

This agenda is believed to enjoy the backing of the five former governors of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) with whom he had been involved in series of mobilisation for the new party to be consummated from the years of consultations.

He was also said to have revealed the new move to his political associates and groups in the South West and across Nigeria in the last one month, a decision believed to be behind the lull and change of strategy in the political consultations among the opposition parties.

Sources close to the godfather of Lagos politics said he backs the decision by AC to support a younger element from the North with a running mate from the oil-bearing South South geo political zone, a deft move to dwarf the influence of Jonathan whose support base political scientists say is weak.

Tinubu and AC favour the candidature of Ribadu and Oshiomhole, two fellows whose support bases they believe could jolt the PDP in the ballot, sources said.

The choice of Ribadu over some other young Northerners like former Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nasir El Rufai, is said to have been informed by the high profile and public sympathy over his performance in the anti-corruption crusade, regardless of his romance with former President Olusegun Obasanjo and allegations that the latter used him to hound adversaries.

The choice of Oshiomhole as a running mate, sources added, flow from his coming from the same region as Jonathan and his wide appeal among Nigerians who relished his presidency of workers’ movement, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Federer crashes out of Wimbledon

Roger Federer crashed out of Wimbledon yesterday in a foul mood as he blamed injuries on his shock exit to Tomas Berdych.

Swiss superstar Federer, 28, tried to rally against Czech Berdych, 24, before slumping to a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 defeat.

Berdych's aggressive display left the defending champion's bid for a seventh crown in tatters.

Grumpy Federer now plans to take two weeks' holiday and will not tune in to watch the final on television on Sunday.

He insisted he needs the rest because he has problems with his back and leg which he attributed to the upset.

"I couldn't play the way I wanted," moaned Federer. "I am struggling with a little bit of a back and leg issue.

"That doesn't quite allow me to play the way I would like to play. It's just uncomfortable, you can't play freely. "And when you can't play freely, that's the kind of performance you get.

"It is frustrating to say the least and I am looking forward to some rest anyway. I am going to have two weeks' vacation. I doubt I'll watch the final as I'll be away."

Federer's reverse meant a second successive Grand Slam quarter-final loss after reaching 23 consecutive semi-finals until the French Open, where he was beaten by Sweden's Robin Soderling.

The star has also slipped behind Rafael Nadal in the world rankings.

But he dismissed suggestions he is past his prime following 16 grand slam titles. He added: "God, I can't wait for Paris and Wimbledon to come around next year.

"They have been frustrating tournaments for me this year but quarters is still a decent result.

"I can get back to my best - that's why I am here."

Berdych faces Serbian Novak Djokovic, 23, who eased into his second Wimbledon semi-final yesterday by outclassing Taiwanese giant-killer Lu Yenhsun 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.

Czech Berdych was unimpressed with Federer's comments but said: "I don't know if he is looking for some excuses."

DANCER Ife Kuku last night became the fifth person to be kicked out of the Big Brother house.

The 25-year-old dancer was the bookies' hot tip to be booted off the reality TV show as she faced the public vote against Mario and Jordan lookalike Corin.

Leaving the house in a short grey dress, Ife was met with a mixture of boos and cheers from the noisy crowd.

She left after gaining 56.5% in the public vote.

Before leaving, the former Cheryl Cole backing dancer reassured other housemates: "I feel alright."

The skin-headed groover from Milton Keynes gained a reputation as a cry baby and fell out with several housemates including Caoimhe and Shabby.

But she put on a brave face and laughed while speaking with host Davina McCall.

When asked about her long list of spats, she said: "I have always been honest. There was no point making up with people after what I had said about them in the Diary room."

Ife Kuku Biography

The earliest vivid memory I have from my childhood, was sitting in my room watching Pop School the Musical. I remember rushing home to watch Sister Sister and Moesha, as I grew my musical taste changed. I started listening to Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and India Arie.

One of the first tapes I brought was the Spice Girls. When I was fourteen a Lauryn Hill album found its way into my collection I have been a fan ever since. I grew up in Milton Keynes, and was part of a very large family “not the conventional kind “ Performing has always been a huge part of my life. School plays, to debating society, choirs, dance shows any chance to stand in front of an audience..

The thrill of being in the moment was scary but a wonderful feeling that would go away once I was off stage. My parents built a conservatory at the back of the house that I used it as my studio to practice and practice I would make up songs and routines and ask friends and family to come in and watch. I was never the strongest singer or dancer however I knew it was something that I wanted to do forever and that the only way to make that possible would be to practice and get better each day.

I moved to London when I was sixteen and trained at a performing arts school, it was so much fun I felt really grown up so many other people to work with who all shared the same love for singing and dancing. When I graduated I threw myself out there and began auditioning for shows, video adverts, Dance Company’s anything and everything. I had a job in a theatre, bar, café and telemarketer, I applied for anything that was flexible and that would fit around my auditions.

Seven years passed and I accomplished so much more than I could of expected and got to travel the world. In 2008 I made the decision to move in a different direction and focus on singing and writing my own songs, and I hope to continue and push forward and someday perform my songs in front of a large audience.

Folarin is one of the guys who sings alongside the self-acclaimed king of hip-hop, Olumide Adegbulu a.k.a. Mr. Olu Maintain. The young dude who joined Olu Maintain shortly after his Yahoozee’s hit album in London recently had a chat with Alonge Michael of www.nigeriafilms.com where he confirms to us that the band, Kentro World, is no more under the supervision of Olu Maintain, the reason is that, the foormidable team led by Folarin has since opened a new chapter of the band totally deleting Olu Maintain’s name as a partaker.
..
How are you bruv?
I’ m good boss

What’s the situation of things between Olu Maintain and the new Kentro World we learnt you just inaugurated?
We are cool. The situation is under control. We thank God for that.

The rumour in town is that Olu Maintain has been excommunicated from the band, Kentro World, how true is this?
We guys are just working on our own new project. The team is still as solid as ever

What is the relationship like with Olu and the entire band now?
There is no incommunicado. I brought Puffy Tee back to the band, took him to London to work with us for our new project. Kentro World and Olu Maintain are two separate brands

So, what is Olu now doing about that?
I don’t know Olu's position on that but as far as am concerned he didn’t react in anyway

Are you people aware of the consequences of your action. Is the brand not registered by Mr. Olu Maintain?
Not at all. We all have the right to that name just like the old Maintain group. Wasn’t big Bamo in charge then? He won’t do that. Even when will made our intention known he just told us ‘nice one’.

Don’t u think he might react legally in future being the principal owner of the brand- Kentro?
When Olu decided to do his thing he did. My brother, Kentro is a brand we all built together, though Olu was the founder and he will forever remain so.

What actually happened? I hear that he sidelined you guys in so many ways. Is it true?
I may not comment on that but all I know is that every book has a chapter but life goes on.

He still remains the founder, right? How can you beat that?
Yes, he’s still the founder and all credits would be given to him for giving life to Kentro but every book has a chapter like I earlier said. Kentro World is ready to show Naija what we've got.

Takerewa that u all did together, I swear, beat even Yahoozee that got him all the attention but Olu's attitude towards people killed the dream of that beautiful album. True or false?
Everybody says this but he’s a changed man now.

A changed man indeed: Can leopard change the spots on its skin?
He has actually changed for real.

In a straight forward answer; who has the right to a song?
Every song an artist records, the artist has full rights to the song and of course the producer depending on the kind of arrangement between the two of them.

Fine! So, Kentro world is now solely run by, Fola, Bondo, Puffy and who else?
Puff Tee is the head producer; the artistes are Bondo, Da Fols, Freaky T and I, Folarin. This new formidable guys are going into the real show business. We intend to even sign a publishing right with an international label and other areas of entertainment.

Who is Da Fols, a new member?
No, he was on Yahoozee remix he was in the University in London through with studies now and ready to move to Lagos fully.

Why did you bring Puffy Tee back?
I believe everyone that has worked hard should be rewarded that is why Puffy Tee was brought back

Who is your tailor in Nigeria? That black Trousers you wore yesterday looked so cool on youl.
Well, my cousin abbey aka steel of Yes records sews for me but I buy most of my cloths abroad. Steel is my buddy and the guy is extremely talented.

So, what do we expect from the New Kentro Crew now?
Already we have recorded 13 songs we are still working o, we hope to shoot videos soon

When is it slated to be out; I mean your promo songs?
Next week we would start releasing

Man CUTS out still-beating heart of Friend

American cage fighter 'rips out still-beating heart of training partner after fearing he was possessed by the devil'

A truly heartbreaking & Frightning Story .

A U.S. cage fighter ripped out the heart of his training partner while he was still alive after becoming convinced he was possessed by the devil, it was alleged today.

Jarrod Wyatt also cut out Taylor Powell's tongue and ripped off most of his face in a brutal assault that police said looked like a scene from a horror film, officers said.

They claim they found the 26-year-old standing naked over his friend's body with parts, including an eyeball, strewn around the blood splattered room in Klamath, California.

Wyatt allegedly told police he had drunk a cup of tea spiked with hallucinogenic mushrooms and became convinced Powell was possessed.

According to an autopsy Powell, 21, bled to death after his heart was ripped out..

The coroner said Powell had been alive when the organ was ripped out after his chest had been sliced open with a knife.

Wyatt told the police he thrown the heart into a fire along with other organs that he had removed from the body, it was claimed.

He allegedly told investigators he cooked the body parts because he was fearful Powell was still alive and he ‘needed to stop the Devil’.

Police had been called to the grisly scene after a third friend had witnessed a sudden mood change in Wyatt after they had all ingested wild mushroom tea.

Photo: Arrested: Jarrod Wyatt was allegedly found standing naked over his dead friend's body in a room bathed in blood

Justin Davis told police he returned to the flat to find Wyatt naked and covered from head to toe in blood.

He noticed an eyeball lying in the middle of the floor and saw Powell's mutilated body.

A lawyer representing Wyatt has claimed the wild mushrooms caused him to act in such a violent way and had not control over his actions.

‘My client was trying to silence the devil,’ said James Fallman.

‘I think he was having a psychotic fit based on the mushrooms he had.’

Wyatt has been charged with first degree murder and torture.

Prosecutors added the torture charge as Powell was still alive when his heart was removed.

THE LAWSUIT involving Zenon Oil President, Femi Otedola, and Bank PHB turned messier on Friday as counsel for Bank PHB, Ajibola Aribisala, told the Lagos High Court that his client - Bank PHB Managing Director, Cyril Chukwuma - was threatened by Acting President Goodluck Jonathan to reach an amicable settlement with Otedola or risk sack.

Aribisala disclosed this while reacting to an oral application moved by Otedola's counsel, Kemi Pinerro.

Pinerro had told Justice Kazeem Alogba that Bank PHB, without an order of court, caused to be published in The Guardian last Thursday an advertorial of the motion on notice and the Mareva injunction issued by the court.

He said the action is contemptuous of court and an abuse of court process.

He urged the court to compel the bank to retract the publication, failing which it would amount to self help and trying the hand of the court.

Counsel to the other defendants - Zenon, African Petroleum, Afribank Registrars, Julius Berger, Skye Bank, and Zenith Bank - agreed with Pinerro.

However, Aribisala countered that he does not need the express permission of the court to publish court documents and a court order.

He said he adopted the measure based on threats against Chukwuma from Abuja..

He disclosed that apart from Jonathan making telephone calls to Chukwuma asking him to reach an amicable settlement with Otedola, his security details were withdrawn by the Inspector General of Police, Ogbonna Onovo, thereby exposing his life to danger.

Aribisala also alleged that Jonathan threatened to have Chukwuma fired if he refuses to withdraw the suit.

He said these are a few cases of the intimidation and harassment of his client since the commencement of the court case, and that Chukwuma would depose to an affidavit on the allegations.

He asked Pinerro to cite the Section of the law breached by the publication of the advertorial.

The court granted Otedola leave to do a retraction in The Guardian and adjourned the case for further hearing.

However, Bank PHB has obtained a Mareva injunction against Zenon freezing all its accounts in 10 banks in a bid to recover a N5.839 billion debt owed it by the oil marketing firm.

The order, made by Alogba, was sequel to a statement of claim issued by Aribisala on behalf of Bank PHB, which also asked the court to cause to be transferred to it all the funds in the 10 banks that have made returns in response to the order.

The accounts, containing a total credit balance of over N2.4 billion, are in Ecobank, Finbank, First Bank, Oceanic, Skye, StabicIBTC, Standard Chartered, Sterling, Unity, and Zenith.

They were identified upon an order made by Alogba directing all banks in the country to disclose Zenon's funds in their books.

Bank PHB's request, contained in a motion on notice, is in addition to an earlier order of Alogba freezing African Petroleum (AP's) account in the bank, with a credit balance of N2.317 billion.

AP is described as a member of the Zenon Energy Group of companies, with Otedola as Chairman.

Also to be affected is the N397.8 million allegedly owed Zenon by Julius Berger, which the court ordered to be paid into an interest yielding account in the name of its Chief Registrar.

These resulted from a suit filed by Bank PHB alleging that Zenon is owing it N5,839,709,439.91 as at January 11 in loans granted between 2007 and 2008.

The defendants are Zenon, Otedola, Afribank Registrars, and Julius Berger.

Bank PHB, in the motion for mareva injunction to freeze Zenon's accounts, said the order is to prevent it from dissipating its funds in the 10 banks, with the aim of frustrating whatever the court's decision may be in the substantive suit.

It accused Zenon of breaching the terms of the credit facilities by not disclosing its earnings from its sales, failing to remit the proceeds, not fulfilling its commitment to liquidate the debt, and avoiding its obligation to the bank.

Bank PHB averred, in a statement of claim, that in the course of its banker-customer relationship with Zenon, it granted the company various credit facilities between 2007 and 2008, with Zenon accepting all the conditions.

It added that at every occasion when loan was granted Zenon, Otedola "had always guaranteed due compliance, by the first defendant (Zenon), with the bank's (claimant's) stipulated terms and conditions of the respective facilities."

It averred that, as part of collaterals for the facilities, Zenon pledged, among others, the payment of rental proceeds from its property at 3B Agodogba Avenue and 12A and 12B Parkview Estate Ikoyi, Lagos.

Zenon also allegedly pledged dividends payment from its investments in AP for 2009 and 2010; its expected proceeds from Julius Berger for the supply of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), and mortgage on its property at 1399A or 5 Tiamiyu Savage, Street, Victoria Island.

The bank accused Zenon of defaulting and refusing to abide by the conditions and, aside repaying a fraction of the loan, refused to honour demands made by the bank since the expiration of the facility.

Bank PHB averred that Zenon's failure to comply with the agreement led to the classification of its accounts as non-performing by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and contributed to why the CBN appointed a new management for the bank..

The case was adjoined to April 29.
