WEDNESDAY, May 25 (HealthDay News) -- Older adults who say they've had a life-changing religious experience are more likely to have a greater decrease in size of the hippocampus, the part of the brain critical to learning and memory, new research finds.

According to the study, people who said they were a "born-again" Protestant or Catholic, or conversely, those who had no religious affiliation, had more hippocampal shrinkage (or "atrophy") compared to people who identified themselves as Protestants, but not born-again.

The study is published online in PLoS ONE.

As people age, a certain amount of brain atrophy is expected. Shrinkage of the hippocampus is also associated with depression, dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

In the study, researchers asked 268 people aged 58 to 84 about their religious affiliation, spiritual practices and life-changing religious experiences. Over the course of two to eight years, changes to the hippocampus were monitored using MRI scans.

The researchers suggested that stress over holding religious beliefs that fall outside of the mainstream may help explain the findings.

"One interpretation of our finding -- that members of majority religious groups seem to have less atrophy compared with minority religious groups -- is that when you feel your beliefs and values are somewhat at odds with those of society as a whole, it may contribute to long-term stress that could have implications for the brain," Amy Owen, lead author of the study and a research associate at Duke University Medical Center, said in a Duke news release.

The study authors also suggested that life-changing religious experiences could challenge a person's established religious beliefs, triggering stress.

"Other studies have led us to think that whether a new experience you consider spiritual is interpreted as comforting or stressful may depend on whether or not it fits in with your existing religious beliefs and those of the people around you," David Hayward, research associate at Duke University Medical Center, added. "Especially for older adults, these unexpected new experiences may lead to doubts about long-held religious beliefs, or to disagreements with friends and family."

The researchers noted other factors related to hippocampal atrophy, such as age, depression or brain size, as well as other religious factors such as prayer or meditation, could not explain the study's findings.

Children’s rights should be protected please! There are people who enslave others especially children placed under their care in the name of a house girl or houseboy. Housekeeping should be a fully paid employment taken by adults. This will bring dignity to the job as is done in civilized countries. Couples who cannot afford it can swap responsibilities between themselves as housewives and house husbands. This is the best way to stop this modern day slavery.

I read this article and decided to share it. When the news of the accident came on the radio and for over 2 weeks nothing else was said, every child and adult heard the story, everyone talked about it. The funeral service was aired live on many Radio and TV channels, kings and Prime ministers attended the funeral.....my first thought was "how many people die daily on Nigerian roads and hardly get mentioned?, have we seen so many deaths that life no longer holds value for us?"

        On the 13th of March, a bus carrying 6th graders returning to Belgium from a school-organised holiday in Switzerland crashed and killed twenty-two children and six adults. At every street corner, in every bakery, people stopped and talked about it. The Belgian Prime Minister, Elio Di Rupo, flew out to Switzerland as soon as the news broke. The families of those involved had military airplanes made available to fly them out to Switzerland. In Switzerland itself, within minutes of the accident happening, at least 200 professionals descended on the scene to help: policemen, medics, fire service teams, and psychologists. There were helicopters to fly the injured to hospitals around the area. According to reports, it took two hours to get the last injured victim out of the mangled bus. Once that was done, investigations began to determine the cause of the accident. The bus was towed away and checked for any technical malfunction that might have been the cause of the accident. An autopsy was performed on the driver to figure out if he had fallen ill or drunk, something that would have affected his driving. No stone was left unturned. There were lots of speculations. Not a single one of them involved ‘enemies of progress’, or the state of the road.

I was in Benin City last year and had taken a cab from my hotel to a different part of the city. The driver had come highly recommended from the hotel staff. His car was in tiptop shape. I gave him the address I had to get to and he said, “I’ll try”. I did not think he meant it literally. I thought “I’ll try” was his way of saying ‘deal’, the same way an uncle of mine always replies ‘How are you?’ with “I’m fine. O so so agu (my only complaint is hunger)”, when in fact he is not hungry. 

I had not been out much in Benin City, and now that I was, the state of its roads depressed me. It was horrendous. The bumpier the trip got, the more I realised that the “I’ll try” said earlier was a promise that meant just that. Despite his goodwill and his car’s condition, the driver abandoned the journey at some point; his spirit completely broken. The road was impassable. There were gullies so deep that no car could possibly drive through. The only way to get to my destination was for me to walk. I asked the driver how long the road had been in that state. He looked at me, smiled sadly and said, “Forever”. Perhaps he had hoped that by some miracle, the government had fixed the road since the last time he was there. In which case, his “I’ll try” was not just a promise but a prayer of hope. 

Benin City does not have the monopoly on bad roads, unfortunately. Our cities are littered with them. Every day, there are tragic road accidents in Nigeria. It is as if our roads have an enormous hunger and nothing short of human blood would assuage that hunger. Only recently, Nigeria lost a brilliant performance poet, Ify Omalicha, in a road accident on the apparently notorious Lokoja-Abuja highway.  A google search on this highway reveals the shocking extent of its notoriety. Try it. Count how many times the word ‘carnage’ comes up.

Our Nigerian situation is exacerbated by the fact that nothing seems to be done in the aftermath of the accidents. We scrape the corpses off our roads, sometimes we blame some ‘enemy’ somewhere plotting evil against us, we bury and we carry on. We bask in our resilience, our ability to stare death in the face every day we take road trips.

In addition to covering the roads ‘with the blood of Jesus’, we must begin to harass our elected officials into working for us. That is what they are there for: our state governors, our commissioners, our senators, our local government chairmen and councillors, the federal government. If they are blind to the state of our roads, if they are impervious to the pain, the sadness that cloaks families every time they lose someone in a car accident, we must open their eyes and shatter their wall of selfish imperviousness. Death is inevitable, but some ways of dying are avoidable.

According to certain religious beliefs, God’s presence in a human being is in the soul. Perhaps this is why the soul is said to be pure and immortal. The human being is also said to be a component of the body and the soul. In this case, the body comprises the physical and the mental categories. There is also the belief that there is life after life. In the second life, the righteous will go to heaven while sinners will go to hell. It is believed in these quarters that heaven and hell do not have physical features but are in a state. This means that the state of being in the presence of God is heaven while the state of the absence of God is hell.

The presence of God is peace, love and all goodness while His absence shows lack of these. Such physical attributes as fire, pain, sorrow and lack for Hell while kingdom, peace, wealth and abundance for Heaven are mere symbols to hit home the message. There may actually be neither kingdom in the real sense nor hell fire to burn people. Rather the message is that the state of heaven is like the earthly kingdom while the state of hell is like the earthly burning furnace. If these states are not physical as imagined, then one may not require physical bodies to attain them or experience them.

There are certain beliefs that heaven is up above the sky while hell is below the earth. If this makes sense, it will help in our analysis. In death, the body is separated from the soul. It should be understood that the soul, body and mind have different functions. While the body and mind are in relation to the world, the soul relates with God. However, their functions are interwoven. It should also be understood that the soul is eternal and immortal. The mind’s products can also live forever while the body is temporary and in transit. As I was saying, in death, the body decays and turns to earth or what is believed to be hell or Hades (There is no presence of God here). The products of the mind are left in the world to assist in changing the people and the world as we experience in science and discoveries, history, language, arts, culture, literature etc. The soul, uncontaminated and pure will go back to its owner, (God the creator) which state is referred to as Heaven. While on earth, the soul is responsible for supervising the body and the mind.

At judgment, the soul that supervised an accomplished body and mind will rest eternally with God and remains in His presence (Heaven). The unaccomplished ones will pick up new bodies and return to earth for total fulfillment, thus certain beliefs in re-incarnation. The transit situation is what is referred in some sectors as purgatory. The unaccomplished body is confined to earth (Hell) eternally with no second option as the soul. This is because the body does not face judgment but only the soul. An unfulfilled soul cannot be in the presence of God but hovers around until assigned to another body for a repeat performance. The accomplishment of the body and mind therefore is the sum totals of the quality and quantity of what goodness and beneficial things it left behind on earth. Through faith, we are exposed to the inward presence of God in us. He assists us through grace in nurturing our body and mind to adapt to all inherent virtues needed to live forever in His presence in both body and soul.

“Think before you speak” is always a good policy -- and at work it's even more important. Saying the wrong thing to your boss can do serious damage to your career -- and some of the things bosses don't like to hear may surprise you. We checked in with some managers and came up with this list of nine phrases they strongly dislike -- and we'll tell you what you should say instead:

1. "I need a raise."

Never enter salary negotiations talking about what you need -- because of rising costs or a new expense, for instance. Your employer doesn't care about your financial problems. However, management probably does want to reward success and keep high-performing employees satisfied. A raise request should always be supported by evidence of what you've achieved for the company -- along with information about what people with your responsibilities typically earn

.

2. “That just isn’t possible.”

Always speak to your boss in terms of what can be done. For instance, rather than saying “We can’t get this done by Friday,” say “We could definitely get this done by Monday, or if we brought in some freelance help, we could meet the Friday deadline.” When you talk to your boss, think in terms of solving problems for her, not in terms of putting problems on her plate.

3. “I can’t stand working with ____.”

Complaining about a coworker's personality usually reflects more poorly on you than on the coworker. Don’t make these kinds of conflicts your boss’s problem. Of course, management is interested in problems that jeopardize the company's ability to function. If you have to speak to HR about a problem such as a colleague's threatening, illegal or unethical behavior, keep your tone professional and the focus on work -- not personal issues.

4. “I partied too hard last night -- I'm so hung over!”

Buck up and get through the day with some ibuprofen, extra undereye concealer and coffee. But don’t share the sordid details of your night on the town with your boss. Even if you have a friendly relationship, he’s just as likely to react with (unspoken) disdain as sympathy. Maintaining a solid veneer of professionalism will pay off when it's time to discuss promotions.

5. “But I emailed you about that last week.”

Alerting your boss to a problem via email doesn't absolve you of all responsibility for it. Bosses hate the "out of my outbox, out of my mind" attitude. Keep tabs on all critical issues you know about -- and keep checking in until you hear a firm "You don't need to worry about that anymore."

6. “It’s not my fault.”

Are you a whiny 8-year-old or a take-charge professional? Assume responsibility and take steps to fix a problem that you did, in fact, create. And if you are being wrongly blamed for a problem, saying “Let’s get to the bottom of this” or “What can we do to make it right?” is much more effective than saying “It’s not my fault.”

7. "I don't know.”

If your boss asks you a question you can’t answer, the correct response is not "I don't know." It's "I'll find out right away."

8. “But we've always done it this way."

You may find yourself with a new boss who wants to try new things -- and the best way to present yourself as a workplace relic is to meet change with a "we do it this way because this is the way we do it" attitude. When a brainstorming session takes place, be part of it and stay open to new ideas. If you have concerns about a new idea's feasibility, say "I think for this to work, we will have to…" Don't kill new ideas with negativity.

9. “Let me set you up with...”

Avoid the urge to play matchmaker for your single boss. The potential risk far outweighs any potential benefit. In modern workplaces, hierarchical structures are often less rigid, and bosses will often end up in semisocial situations with their direct reports. Smart workers will draw the line at "oversharing" -- definitely something to keep in mind if you're connecting to your company's managers on social networks like Facebook.   

Ibusa, near Asaba, the capital of Delta State was thrown into confusion and palpable tension with the news that a 26-year-old man, Ugochukwu has impregnated his mother and step-sister.

We gathered that Ugochukwu, also popularly called Peter by people in the area allegedly left his mother identified as Cecilia while he was 12 years old to look for the proverbial golden fleece in Lagos.

It was learnt that Peter learnt the tricks of wooing women while working in a hotel in Lagos.

It was also gathered that sometime ago, Ugochukwu’s father died after a brief illness and his mother, Cecilia subsequently remarried a Yoruba man in Lagos.

Sources said Ugochukwu had over time become the most sought-after man and darling of the many women who flock around the hotel where he works.

He got admitted to the Lagos polytechnic, where he reportedly met and started dating one Mary, who turned out to be his step sister, being the girl his mother had for the Yoruba man she got married to in Lagos).

Their relationship blossomed and on graduation, they thought of formal introduction to both families.

Meanwhile, Ugochukwu’s mother had reportedly dumped the Yoruba man after threechildren and had jumped into the commercial sex business, where she is often seen around Allen Avenue in Lagos soliciting for customers.

Family sources said that Ugochukwu had always told people that his parents died long ago and he has been in the struggle alone, a situation he claimed led him to drinking, smoking as well as womanising. On one eventful night, Ugchukwu had reportedly gone out with a friend to a hang-out, where they got themselves drunk and retired to a hotel to pass the night.

It was there he picked his mother and had sex with her without a condom.

Meanwhile, Ugochukwu and Mary continued with their introduction plans and trip to the village, prompting her (Mary) and Cecilia (their mother) to return home in preparation for the event.

Alas, when Ugochukwu was introduced by Mary as her husband-to-be, all hell broke loose as it was discovered that the two are siblings, an occurrence regarded by family members as a taboo and abominable.

It was learnt that while the family was yet to fully recover from the shock, Cecilia, their mother opened up on her relationship with her son and that that she was even pregnant for him.

A family member identified as Martins confirmed the incident, adding that the elders have asked the trio to move out of the community.

Residents who spoke  on condition of anonymity condemned the act, describing it as an abomination and unheard-off.

Mrs Ngozi Kanu hails from Aro Ndizogu in Imo State, but has spent most part of her life in Bauchi State, graduating from Federal Polytechnics, Bauchi, with Higher National Diploma (HND) in Cathering and Hotel Management.

In the year 1998 when she first arrived Abuja , the so called land of opportunities, Ngozi  worked in Agura and Northern Meridian Hotel but couldn`t find enough satisfaction in the job coupled with her role as mother of four. She quit the job and vied into the labour market and went on searching until circumstances  got her into a job which is literally reserved for men.

“We have a bus and we keep giving it out to drivers to manage for us. But as usual, you will hear excuses – the car broke down, flat tyre, fan belt and so on. One story must be told and we never had any return only expenses.” While she went about looking for a job the attitude of their driver kept pissing her off but she endured and continued her endless search for white-collar job until came the last straw that broke the camel`s back.

According to her “ Last year during one of the fuel scarcities, we had a programme in the church and I called the driver to carry me and the children to the church because my husband was on duty but the driver refused.”  Ngozi  though could drive cars, had never driven bus before but she urgently needed to get to the church and there was little or no fuel in the vehicle!  She then said to herself “What is it in this vehicle that I can`t drive. If I can drive other vehicles, why can`t I drive this?” She took the key and took a chance.   

She drove the vehicle searching for fuel, from Karimo where they live up to Central Area where she finally got fuel and where her husband`s office is located. “ When I drove into my husband`s office he was surprised and doubted it when I told him I drove the vehicle to his office by myself. He asked about the driver and I said he didn`t come. He still went out to check if the driver was somewhere outside , maybe I was trying to play tricks but he found none. ”

As if it was a joke, Ngozi started using the bus to sustain herself and the family, plying Karimo to Wuse Market up to Area One and Area  Ten. “I said I`m an applicant, searching for job. Ok, since the bus is here let me use it in the evening I will come and pick passengers when I get to town I will have a full load. Now I`m fully in it. I even have an I D card. So that`s what I`m doing now until I find a good job. If I find a good job I leave it.” Trailing where her female folk may not dare trail, while her applications are still scattered at various Ministries and parastatals. So one may begin to wonder how she copes.

Without mincing words  Ngozi would tell you “ Well it`s tedious. Early in the morning you jump out ,be on the road, make sure  you get enough “dough” in your hand. Get home again. Do the work at home, take care of children , take care of  your husband  and every other domestic work you have to do. It`s very tedious but there`s nothing one can do about it.”

Though her home job has been made easier because her children go to school  in the neighbourhood. So there`s little or no school runs on her side. “My first child is 12years old so he helps to take the others to school since they are all in the same school” Ngozi says.

Competing among the male folk and the agberos is not a mean tasks but Ngozi finds it easy as she says that “Other male drivers respect me. They often say ah! See this hardworking woman. She wants to help the husband and also help the children instead of whiling away time. Moreover I`m the only ” Izuogu 1  bus“ on the road. So they respect me. Izuogu 1 is the name written at the back of her bus and the male drivers chose to nickname her that.

Given the option most people in this clime may be tempted to board a bus being driven by a man than that of a woman, so how does Ngozi cope with passenger.  “ They patronise me now. It was at the initial time that it was difficult.” Some of her passengers  caught up by LEADERSHIP news expressed their confidence in the woman, saying: “ I really feel safer riding on a bus driven by a woman than that of a man because they are more careful than men.” Some however have a lot of reservation in boarding such a bus as they say that women can lose composure in case of any eventuality.  

Ngozi is not however bothered by the number of people that enter her vehicle. The most important thing for her is to go home with the sum N7000 naira on any good day. On the average she makes N4000 everyday and “that is good enough for now” she says. 

This mother of four  who looks very young and attractive always get easily attracted to some of her male passengers who admire her courage but she always get prepared for: “It`s business , business and business. She told one of them. I want booking within Abuja.”

Ngozi finds time to unwind with her family and has a word of advice for women who may be sitting down waiting for the easy way out to   “believe in themselves and do whatever is available and honourable while they wait for a better job.” She also advise them to look for the bus with inscription “Izuogu 1“ at the back screen  and front doors each time they go to and from Karimo as a mark of solidarity.
