12166289294?profile=originalPresident Goodluck Jonathan has sounded a note of warning to those making inciting statements, challenging Nigeria’s sovereignty as a nation and warned his government would no longer “take that kind of rubbish lightly.” [More, ] The president, who was speaking at the decoration ceremony of some newly promoted Nigerian Navy and Air Force Admirals and Air Vice Marshals yesterday in Abuja, said those who made such incendiary utterances were always the first to take their families abroad to stay until other people’s children and families suffered and died as a result of their mischief.

He was apparently reacting to perceived inciting statements by former president Ibrahim Babangida (IBB) and former vice president and presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.

Atiku had, while speaking at the National Stakeholders Conference organised by the Adamu Ciroma-led Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPLF) in Abuja, on Wednesday, warned the Federal Government on the likelihood of violence in next year’s election, saying, “those who make peaceful change impossible, make violent change inevitable.”

President Jonathan warned: “We will no longer allow that kind of culture. I will not allow anybody to take the country for a ride. And sometimes, I frown at some people making statements, especially those of us who are politicians making statements, challenging the sovereignty of this nation.

“Nigerian Government will no longer take that kind of rubbish lightly. Because when we have crisis, we lose army officers, police officers and some of us who are the cause of the trouble are the people flying to the United States to go and stay until other peoples’ children will die, other people’s wives will suffer then they come back to be our leaders. We will no longer allow that kind of culture. I will not allow anybody to take the country for a ride.”
..
President Jonathan, while decrying inciting utterances by some politicians in recent times, said Nigeria was bigger than any individual. He called on those guilty of such inciting statements to focus on how to move the country forward and not toe the path of destruction. The president commended the role played by the Nigerian military to keep the nation one, saying but for the role played by the Nigerian Armed Forces in international peace support operations all over the world, Nigeria would not have been recognised as the giant of Africa.

He said the country, more than ever before, was ready to take her rightful place in the African sub-region, adding that the whole world was looking up to Nigeria to settle the political situation in Cote d’ Ivoire. “We have to thank the military for keeping the country together. You have shown leadership in the whole of Africa.

As for what is happening in Cote d’ Ivoire everyday, presidents all over the world are calling on me because they feel it is only Nigeria that can solve the problem of that country. That tells you how others rate Nigeria and we have no reason to derail. “I have to commend the military for doing that. We have that standing role in the society because of the role the military is playing.”

The president, who personally decorated the first female rear admiral in the Nigerian Navy with her new rank, said his administration was conferring with the leadership of the Nigerian Armed Forces to commence the admission of women into the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) to be trained as regular combatant officers.

Arsène Wenger warns Cesc Fábregas off 'unwatchable' Spanish league
• La Liga is in 'complete disarray', says Wenger
• Only Arsenal among top three are 'on the up', he says

Arsene Wenger

Arsène Wenger thinks his team can surpass Chelsea next year unless his rivals buy big over the summer. .Photograph: Nick Potts/PA

Arsène Wenger has claimed that Arsenal are the only one of the big four on the rise and he showed his determination to retain his best players this summer by declaring that Cesc Fábregas would be misguided to move to Barcelona because the "unwatchable" Spanish league "is in complete disarray".

Arsenal's campaign seems set to conclude, for the fifth year in a row, without a trophy but Wenger maintained that his methods have been vindicated and that, given injuries to key players, the season has been successful, although he also said that Wednesday's defeat in the north London derby left his team with "only hope, not a realistic view" of overtaking the leaders, Chelsea.

"The other night [after defeat by Tottenham] I went home and thought I was stupid because I was hugely disappointed," said Wenger. "But I think overall you try to bring a team as high as they can and this year I have a done a good job [given] what happened to us. Playing in the top three, with all the competition around us, you cannot say the policy hasn't paid off. Yes, you cannot parade in the street with a trophy but you cannot say that what we have done and the way we have achieved it hasn't paid off."

Wenger suggested that, with Manchester United and Liverpool constrained by debt, only a further instance of what he calls "financial doping" can keep Chelsea ahead of Arsenal next season. "We are the most on the up," he said. "The only difference is that tomorrow Abramovich can go out and buy 10 players because he has the financial potential. If Chelsea were run like every other club, he couldn't do it. That's the difference. On the curve we are going up, that is for sure, and they are going down; that is sure as well because they have six or seven players over 30. But Abramovich can just say, 'Today I will buy seven 24-year-old players.'" Asked whether Manchester City were also "on the up", Wenger replied: "They are on a serious cheque book."

Wenger acknowledged that Arsenal are likely to open their own cheque book this summer, admitting the club needs to reinforce its defence. "I don't deny that," said Wenger, "and you could see that again on Wednesday night. It was a game we had to win but we couldn't win, so we're not there but on the other hand we're not far. It is difficult to see whether we need to buy because we were without Gallas, Fábregas, Van Persie and Arshavin. But we need to add something defensively because I believe in the big games we were too vulnerable."

Wenger is keen to persuade William Gallas to sign a new contract when his deal expires in the summer but he refused to countenance breaking the club's rigid wage structure. "We'll always keep our policy," he said. "We manage within our resources."

The player Wenger would be most loth to lose this summer would be the team's chief conductor, Fábregas. This week the 22-year-old has again been linked with a return to Spain, with Barcelona refusing to rule out a bid for a player they nurtured and reports that Real Madrid are preparing an offer. Wenger, however, said the Primera Liga is vastly inferior to thePremier League and any player who moves there would be taking a downward step.

"I watched Real Madrid against Almeria [on Thursday] and turned off after 30 minutes – it was unwatchable," he said. "I can't see anyone who has a competitive edge going to Spain. They have two good teams but the third team is 21 points behind and this week the players threatened to go on strike because they are not paid. It's a league that is in complete disarray. If you are competitive you stay in England, that's where the competition is and that's where the best players want to be."

Stephen Hawking in front of sun with coronal mass ejections.

THE aliens are out there and Earth had better watch out, at least according to Stephen Hawking. He has suggested that extraterrestrialsare almost certain to exist — but that instead of seeking them out, humanity should be doing all it that can to avoid any contact.

The suggestions come in a new documentary series in which Hawking, one of the world’s leading scientists, will set out his latest thinkingon some of the universe’s greatest mysteries.

Alien life, he will suggest, is almost certain to exist in many other parts of the universe: not just in planets, but perhaps in the centreof stars or even floating in interplanetary space.

Hawking’s logic on aliens is, for him, unusually simple. The universe, he points out, has 100 billion galaxies, each containinghundreds of millions of stars. In such a big place, Earth is unlikely tobe the only planet where life has evolved.

“To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly rational,” he said. “The real challenge is to work outwhat aliens might actually be like.”

The answer, he suggests, is that most of it will be the equivalent of microbes or simple animals — the sort of life that has dominated Earthfor most of its history.

One scene in his documentary for the Discovery Channel shows herds of two-legged herbivores browsing on an alien cliff-face where they arepicked off by flying, yellow lizard-like predators. Another showsglowing fluorescent aquatic animals forming vast shoals in the oceansthought to underlie the thick ice coating Europa, one of the moons ofJupiter.

Such scenes are speculative, but Hawking uses them to lead on to a serious point: that a few life forms could be intelligent and pose athreat. Hawking believes that contact with such a species could bedevastating for humanity.

He suggests that aliens might simply raid Earth for its resources and then move on: “We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligentlife might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet. I imaginethey might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources fromtheir home planet. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach.”

He concludes that trying to make contact with alien races is “a little too risky”. He said: “If aliens ever visit us, I think theoutcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed inAmerica, which didn’t turn out very well for the Native Americans.”

The completion of the documentary marks a triumph for Hawking, now 68, who is paralysed by motor neurone disease and has very limitedpowers of communication. The project took him and his producers threeyears, during which he insisted on rewriting large chunks of the scriptand checking the filming.

John Smithson, executive producer for Discovery, said: “He wanted to make a programme that was entertaining for a general audience as well asscientific and that’s a tough job, given the complexity of the ideasinvolved.”

Hawking has suggested the possibility of alien life before but his views have been clarified by a series of scientific breakthroughs, suchas the discovery, since 1995, of more than 450 planets orbiting distantstars, showing that planets are a common phenomenon.

So far, all the new planets found have been far larger than Earth, but only because the telescopes used to detect them are not sensitiveenough to detect Earth-sized bodies at such distances.

Another breakthrough is the discovery that life on Earth has proven able to colonise its most extreme environments. If life can survive andevolve there, scientists reason, then perhaps nowhere is out of bounds.

Hawking’s belief in aliens places him in good scientific company. In his recent Wonders of the Solar System BBC series, Professor Brian Coxbacked the idea, too, suggesting Mars, Europa and Titan, a moon ofSaturn, as likely places to look.

Similarly, Lord Rees, the astronomer royal, warned in a lecture earlier this year that aliens might prove to be beyond humanunderstanding.

“I suspect there could be life and intelligence out there in forms we can’t conceive,” he said. “Just as a chimpanzee can’t understandquantum theory, it could be there are aspects of reality that are beyondthe capacity of our brains.”

Stephen Hawking's Universe begins on the Discovery Channel on Sunday May 9 at 9pm.

Looking his 85 years, the priest is still dressed in his pajamas, but his face shows signs of energy that has helped sustain him as the chief exorcist for the Vatican during the last 25 years.

In a rare interview with the Italian newspaper, La Repubblica, Amorth strongly defends his work and that of the Association of Exorcists.

"The devil is not everywhere," he says. "But when he is present it is painful." He says he has treated over 70,000 cases of demonic possession..

"The devil is pure spirit, invincible. He is shown with the painful blasphemies coming from the person which he possesses. He can stay hidden. He can speaks different languages. He can transform himself," Amorth says.

RCCG warns AC against linking Adeboye with corruption

Femi Makinde, Ado-Ekiti

The Redeemed Christian Church of God has warned the Action Congress in Ekiti State against linking its General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, with the alleged diversion of public funds to religious purposes.

Pastor Adeboye

A statement issued by Pastor Ola Adejubee of Province 1, RCCG in Ekiti State and made available to our correspondent in Ado-Ekiti on Monday, said that the church did not need taxpayers' money to organise any crusade.

The statement accused the AC of using surreptitious means to cast "aspersions on the good name of the RCCG and the person of Pastor E.A. Adeboye, the general overseer of the church ,by insinuating that the church and our respected G.O are colluding with the government of Ekiti State to waste a colossal amount of money on a programme it derisively described as a black market spiritual exercise."

Adejubee added that the crusade, scheduled for Friday in Ado-Ekiti, did not have any input from the state government or any politician. He said it was a service organised to further propagate the gospel.

The spokesman of the AC in Ekiti State, Mr. Yemi Adaramodu, had on February 2, in a statement, asked clergymen to shun Governor Segun Oni's invitation to the state, as this would be used to siphon public resources.

He said in the statement, "The vegetating PDP regime in Ekiti State is currently using the veil of hosting a legion of pastors to loot the state's treasury.

"We are at home with the coming of men of God to Ekiti on ecumenical crusades but certainly not on the invitation and bills of the Ekiti PDP regime, which is a vector for poll robbery, illicit and venal practices and till plundering."
