A family of seven travelling in a Mitsubishi car which was damagedbeyond recognition were among the over 25 persons who died in a ghastly motor accident that occurred at Onyeama hills on the outskirts of Enugu on Wednesday .

Although the identities were yet to be ascertained as at the time of this report, sources confirmed that the seven occupants of the red Mitsubishi car with Enugu registration No. BD 371 UWN, were members of a family amongst them a man, his wife and five persons believed to be their children..

The accident, which involved multiple vehicles including two trailers also claimed the lives of all the occupants of an 18-seater commuter bus.
Eye witness account reported that the accident was caused by a trailer being towed by another lorry and which lost control when the rope with which the trailer was tied to the towing vehicle cut.

The trailer, which hit other vehicles in the process ended up in a valley while the other vehicles involved ended up in a valley. The Onyeama hills, which is near the Onyeama Mines has become a nightmare for drivers and travellers as it has recorded accidents in which lives were lost.

As at Thursday morning when our reporter visited the scene of the accident ,bodies of some victims that were trapped were still being removed. While sympathizers wept uncontrollably at the scene of the accident ,so many lamented the government’s insensitivity to the condition of roads in the South -east, expressing fears of similar incidents during the christmas period .

90 Killed in Kogi fertilizer auto crash

* 38 others critically injured Lokoja-IT was a gory sight yesterday in Dekina, in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State when a truck carrying fertilizer lost control and crashed into a market in the area, killing about 90 people. Sunday Vanguard gathered that 38 other victims, mainly traders, were seriously injured and were, at press time, being treated at the intensive care unit of a private hospital in the area. The zonal commanding officer of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in charge of Anpka Division, Abdul Adejo, who confirmed the auto crash, blamed it on brake failure. Governor Ibrahim Idris, who was scheduled for an official assignment in Abuja at the time of the incident, cancelled the trip and immediately proceeded to the scene of accident. The governor, who battled to hold back tears, directed that the injured be immediately taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, for proper treatment. Idris, who described the incident as a “tragedy” that calls for a state mourning, promised to offset the medical bills of the injured persons. “This is a very terrible situation. I can’t understand why the blood of human beings will spill in this manner,” Idris said.

Again, 22 die in Kano auto crash

Kola Oyelere, Kano - 29.05.2009NO fewer than 22 people lost their lives in an auto accident which occurred on Kwanar-Kof road, about 62 kilometres from Kano, on Wednesday as a result of burst tyre .The accident occurred a week after the state was thrown into mourning following the death of 22 members of a family in another road accident on Gwarzo road, Kano State.The victims were said to have travelled to visit a sick relation but had the accident on their return journey.An eyewitness said that the accident occurred around 1.00 a.m. as a result of a tyre burst.The source added that the 18-seater bus heading for Kano from Ilorin had 28 passengers on board, including the driver and conductor, out of which 19 people died on the spot while nine survivors, who sustained injuries, were taken to the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, for treatment.It was learnt that three of them later died in the hospital. The driver of the vehicle, who survived the crash, was said to have been taken to his hometown for local medication.

It is only in Naija that a car crash kills as many people as a plane crash !Is it the roads killing people or the Drivers are bad drivers and are asking for death unusual for Naija or What does it really mean to have drivers license in naijaIT was yet another tragic yesterday, as no fewer than 70 persons were feared dead in an accident on the Okene-Auchi-Benin road.The burnt bodies were later given a mass burial with the assistance of the local council, Police and FRSC.The accident, which occurred shortly after the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital gate, involved a luxury bus said to be travelling from Sokoto to Port Harcourt.Eyewitness account said the bus rammed into a stationary truck, which apparently developed fault and had no caution sign on the road.we gathered that many of the dead victims were burnt beyond recognition while many of the survivors had severe burns.The Zonal Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Zakari Nda though did not confirm the number of dead victims, he said the accident was "very fatal."He confirmed that the accident involved a luxury bus fully loaded with passengers and that it ran into a stationary tanker.As at yesterday morning when contacted Nda, he said, "the bus is still burning. Survivors and dead cannot be ascertained now until the fire subsides. I am at the scene. Fire service has been contacted, it is a horrible scene," he said.Last Saturday, about 14 traders who were on their way to Onitsha lost their lives in Agbede bridge axis of the same road in Etsako West when their bus had a collision with a J5 bus.
