Katherine Edoho

Katherine Edoho, wife of Frank Edoho, anchor of the TV game show, Who Wants to be a Millionnaire is one of those that started the popular NTA breakfast show ‘Am Express.’ She tells ADA ONYEMA why she took a break from the show.

You started as a presenter. Was that your first love?

I read accountancy in school. I went to work in a radio corporation accounts department and then the general manager of programmes walked up to me and asked if I would like to present a programme on radio. I decided to give it a trial. Then I discovered that I loved it. I love music; it is a natural thing. So I would say that my first love was radio. Later my friends thought I should try the television. They said that I talked well. There was a casting at DBN and I went there out of curiosity. They told me to come back for the second and third parts of the interview and then, I started out at DBN TV.

Tell us about AM Express. How did it all begin?

I started as a continuity staff at NTA because at the time they were looking for continuity announcers. NTA was not recruiting and they did not have young people; they only employed a couple of young people as announcers. The then executive director programmes, Mr Peter Igho decided to put something together with the late Mr Yinka Craig and they said they needed young people to kick it off. They got five of us and then we came on board and decided to run with it and the show became a great success and we had a great time on the show. At first, it was something for fun, then it blew up and it became something we really came to enjoy and we did not know it would have great followership.

How do you feel about it today?

It‘s been okay. The recognition has been awesome; people recognise you everywhere. I have been off the show for about two years, but it is amazing how people still recoginse me. I wanted to be anonymous for a while. Children came along and I had to raise them.

In other words, you took a break in order to raise your children?

Yes. Raising three children wasn‘t a joke. Also I wanted to think about what I wanted to do. I became tired of television. I had anchored the Maltina Dance All show, which was professional to me because it was not a presentation. I learnt how to do the Salsa and Chacha Cha dance. So it was fun for me. After Maltina dance hall, I haven‘t seen something exciting come along yet. So here I am.

Do you think the AM Express breakfast show gave birth to other programmes on TV?

I would say so because at the time Am Express came on board, there wasn‘t a lot on TV to compete with and then there was happiness and fun. Everybody was young then, even the late Mr Craig and Sadiq Daba were there. But it wasn‘t so obvious. We could seamlessly come together as one and have a great time with the show. Honestly that was what happened. We just had great time on the show.

How about your colleagues, Ellen and the others?

Ellen is abroad pursuing an MBA and then decided to stay there and do some other work. Miriam is still in NTA doing her own thing, but I decided to do something different. I could present Am Express to you now. It is not challenging anymore for me. It is the same thing and same format. So it is not challenging anymore. I told myself that I wanted something more challenging. So I switched to radio. I worked with Classic and Beat FM. It is fun being anonymous and I will continue with radio for sometime because radio is fun, challenging and absolutely different from television.

You have had this low hair cut for sometime now. What is the motive behind it?

I just love it. It is convenient. My husband met me with a short hair, but don‘t get me wrong. I have done the corn roll, vague, long and short hair, and more. It‘s all fun. But for me, I‘m a hands-on person and I don‘t like things distracting me. At times I have to pack it this way, its sweating, I‘m itching and I decide to cut my hair. When I cut my hair my mum does not like it but my Dad loves it. It is easy for me; I could always shower and dip my hair in water without feeling it. It is easy and convenient and I‘m fine with it.

What does style mean to you as a person?

You must be comfortable in what you wear. I don‘t care if you wear rags; you must be able to pull it off successfully. You must be comfortable in it because if you are not, someone will know. It is either you‘ll be tucking or pulling something from your dress. What you wear must be comfortable, depending on the shape of your body and how you wear and combine it. I‘m so uneasy with fashion because I wouldn‘t want it to rule me. I‘m comfortable in jeans, shorts, dresses and shoes. If my shoes are comfortable, I can walk anywhere and go as far as I want.

How do you unwind at your leisure time?

I listen to music, lying down.

What is your best time of the day?

I think it is morning because I can achieve a lot in the mornings. I‘m so self-indulging. I love myself. If I want to work hard; I prefer to rise up in the morning and get all my business done in the morning. In the afternoon, I begin to wind down maybe schedule one or two appointments in the afternoon. I don‘t kill myself for anything.

How did you meet your husband?

I had met him before and met him again in Lagos. He is my brother‘s friend and when he visited my brother, I left the room for them. Then we were supposed to compere an event at one beauty pageant and he came late. I wondered what sort of guy he was; how he got off without an apology. I told him it was so uncool, that I didn‘t care he was late; he owed me an explanation and everything went like that. We met again at DBN when I came to work in DBN and he was working with them, too. I didn‘t recognise him, though I knew he was familiar. When he asked if I was not Philip‘s sister, I didn‘t answer him. So he left. I asked someone his name and that person said Frank Edoho. The name sounded familiar and that was it. I didn‘t remember him anymore. But as we worked together, we got to know each other better. That‘s how we became close, we dated other people, but we were friends.

And he decided to go for you?

Not really. He was dating somebody else and I was dating somebody else. Then he told me to find a ring for his girlfriend and I followed him. People were now congratulating me and I told them the ring was not meant for us, that I was doing it for his fiancee whom he wanted to propose to. Later he came to toast me. I didn‘t see it coming, seriously. Just as I wondered what he was saying, it turned out to be me.

What fashion accessory are you crazy about?

Earrings. Because of my short hair, I love long earrings. I prefer earrings to necklaces and watches and sunglasses.

Do you plan to go back to radio?

Yes

How about TV?

Something must blow me away for TV. I will do TV, but it must be major. I love TV because it is a lot easy for me.

Can you compare the two?

Radio is much fun because people are not seeing you. You choose to be anonymous and to ask someone‘s opinion about yourself because people don‘t know you. But with the TV, once it is done, it is done. If you make a mistake it is there and people see you. The TV, on the other hand, is easy because if you make a mistake you can always use other things, such as your hands and expression, to cover up. But all they hear on radio is your voice. If you stammer, the listeners will notice that you have run out of words.

What does it take to be

a broadcaster?

You must be well read. But you don‘t have to go to the United Kingdom to acquire a British accent. You must speak well, pronounce your words and make sure your native tongue doesn‘t interfere in the way you speak proper English. You must be well read and ready to sacrfice a lot in order to make a name in the industry.

How was growing up like?

It was fun. I‘m the only daughter of my parents. My dad is Camerounian and my mum is from Calabar, Cross River State. We grew up largely in Calabar because my dad was travelling a lot as a medical doctor. We spent all our holidays in Cameroun. That was how we could learn and speak French language. It was happy time. I became a tomboy in the midst of three brothers. My mum is a very strong woman, but my dad was away a lot because he was doing professional courses in Medicine and when he had breaks, he would come. My mum was strong, my dad was calmer. So there was a balance. I would say my mum raised us well. I have no regrets. Initially, you know how kids are, we thought she was mean and all that. Now I know better. I tell her, you didn‘t carry us along; you are didactic and in as much as we obeyed you, we are who we are today, but we would have appreciated some explanation. We never really got along when I was growing up. We are both opinionated, but we had to meet each other halfway. I am her only daughter and we learnt to get along in later life.

You took time off from work just to take care of the home front.

Yes. I was just bored with my work and at the same time I was pregnant, so I took some time off to try to get closer to my children. I realise that a woman must have time for her home. I take no exception. The children must feel you as a mum and feel your presence. If you are not around, they must feel your absence.

Now that you are engaged with the radio, do you stll have enough time for your family?

No, I am doing private productions, which gives me time. I travel a lot, too. I visit French West Africa to buy fabrics. I just work round a flexible schedule. Nothing comes before my family. Even if it means me putting everything on hold so that I can be there for my children, I try as much as possible to do that.

How much time do you have for your husband?

I try my best. It is a frienship thing and we understand each other. It is a pattern, we have mutual respect and love, which says a lot.

12166051257?profile=originalThe dictionary describes procrastinator as a person who defers performance of anything. I believe we are all guilty of procrastinating at some point in our live, If i am being honest i thought of procrastinating writing this note today and made up so many excuses in my head. No matter how small the performance is delaying or deferring a performance falls under the definition of procrastination, be it a phone call to that friend you have not spoken to in a while, walking the dog, starting the project or making a visit they are all in the same basket. As the definition says above a procrastinator can defer performance of ANYTHING, there are some things that we can or may procrastinate that may not be life changing, but there is one performance that should NEVER be procrastinated and that's having a relationship with JESUS. I say this because I have not met a man that can give me the exact time, date or location of his death, I believe there is only one person that can provide such information and that is God almighty.

I was lead to write this note because of a dream I had recently, a certain part of the dream brought me to tears. In this dream there was a lot of violence among youths and people were running helter- skelter, we were lucky enough to have located some mobile police men who we ran to and told us to queue up, I went forward to ask if anyone had died and the police man showed me 4 dead men they had killed and gave a name of a girl that had been beheaded in her sleep, I heard this and fell to my knees crying, then I overheard a conversation between 2 girls that were standing behind me, one of the girls was saying how she had gone to this girl that was beheaded and told her to give her life to Christ and the girls response was that she will do so later :( , only if she had known, she procrastinated the ONE THING that should never be procrastinated.12166304100?profile=original

I know some of you think the next thing am going to type is " please do not think i am trying to scare you with this dream" but you are very wrong, there are times the right kind of fear will push us to make the right decisions, recently a lot of youths have been dying and am sure none of them knew they were going to pass away. Matthew 24: 36-42 “However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. * Only the Father knows. When the Son of man returns, it will be like it was the in Noah's day. In those days before the flood the people were enjoying banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered the boat. People did not realize what was going to happen until the flood came and swept them all away. That is the way it will be when the Son of Man comes.

The scripture above is talking about the coming of  Jesus but there is a word there that we can use to summarise this, it will be UNEXPECTED. I have not typed all the verses, but verse 42 says so you too must keep watch! This verse is not for the dead that have passed away this verse is YOU who have the opportunity to make the right decision. People have started living their lives like they will never die or like they have enough time to play around especially the youngsters and youths they carry on performing immorality so they can feel among as they do not want to seem UNCOOL, please tell me if it’s this coolness that takes one to heaven. Even the adults are doing the same thing drunkenness, drugs, sexual immorality, unforgiveness, lies, cheating etc ehn ehn ehn those that have eyes better read. I take my prayer from Psalm 118:17 “I will not die, instead I will live to tell what the Lord has done" and that’s my prayer for all of you as well, that you shall not leave earth until you have fulfilled God's purpose in your life.

It’s not too late trust me, try not to care about people calling you names, your past is your past choose to move forward from today and i know it might be challenging to stop those habits you are so used to, but trust me i have been there, give him your heart genuinely and He will do it. This message might be just for YOU do not be a PROCRASTINATOR.

I have 2 prayer points that I want us all to say.

1. Lets pray against violence among youths, also lets pray for confusion in the camp of the devil, his plans to use youths to commit such atrocities were they start thinking they are invincible. I pray they begin to give their hearts to God.

2. Let pray for those that decided to procrastinate their relationship with God, that they will not have peace of mind until they make the right decision to give their lives to Christ.

I give God the glory for this note, Father you have shown your love and mercy by revealing this to us today. Hell was only built for the devil and his demons, but he has decided to add man as his roommates, but that is not your plan as you have made a beautiful place for us in heaven. For those that do not believe in heaven and hell good luck to you, I prefer not to take the risk :)

Have a lovely weekend people.

artificial_cloud_blog_post.jpgQatar won the bid to host the 2022 World Cup by promising that its nine new open-air soccer stadiums would be air-conditioned. Now the Qataris have announced another cool twist to their hospitality -- an artificial cloud to hover above the stadium and provide shade.

The head of mechanical and industrial engineering at Qatar University said the cloud would be positioned by remote control and run on solar power.

Based on the design shown in local Qatari news outlets, the cloud isn't white and fluffy. It is flat and rectangular, resembling a giant cell phone, and will be built using light carbonic materials. Perhaps something was lost in translation from Arabic because the invention is more spaceship than cloud, but ultimately players and fans will benefit from the shade.

The cost of the cloud is $500,000, but money is no obstacle for Qatar, which is one of the world's richest countries thanks to vast natural gas and oil reserves.

There have been concerns about the heat ever since Qatar began its campaign in 2009 to pursue a World Cup. The average high for July in Qatar is 106 degrees, and temperatures have reached 120 degrees in the summer. That is one reason why Prince Ali of Jordan suggested shifting the 2022 World Cup from its traditional time in July to January, which is Qatar's coolest month with an average high of 71 degrees.

Temperatures were in the 60s for the 2010 World Cup championship match in Johannesburg, South Africa, held on July 11, between Spain and the Netherlands.

Qatar, which is roughly the size of Connecticut, will be the smallest nation to host a World Cup. The other finalists to host in 2022 were the U.S., Australia, Japan and South Korea.

The head of mechanical and industrial engineering at Qatar University announced plans this week to develop an "artificial cloud" that will be positioned in the sky to provide shade and help reduce the heat in stadiums for the 2022 World Cup. The incredible plan has made news around the world with many wondering how Qatar University could come up with such a fantastical concept. Well, it didn't. The Simpsons did.

In the legendary two-part 1995 episode entitled "Who Shot Mr. Burns?" nefarious power plant owner C. Montgomery Burns devises a plan to create a giant shield that will block the sun and keep Springfield in perpetual darkness. Springfield's wacky residents soon turn on Mr. Burns and the mystery of his shooting ensues. So, as Globoesporte points out, while Qatar may have added their own twist by making the artificial cloud remote controlled, the core idea is clearly ripped from a 16-year-old cartoon.

Even the idea of ripping off this idea isn't original, though. In 2002, South Park did an entire episode called "The Simpsons Already Did It" where Butters a.k.a. Professor Chaos plots to build a large structure to block out the sun (video clip here). But even Butters realizes the it isn't worth building once he's told that The Simpsons already did it. Apparently Qatar hasn't gotten that far yet.

When by twist of fate Mr. Babatunde Rufai met Sola, a man who allegedly defrauded him of N950,000, in police detention at Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department, he thought his tribulation was over and that the police would release him.

pix201103250161123[1].jpg?width=400
Babatunde Rufai

Rufai, who runs a restaurant with his wife at Block 296 Akinyele Abesan Estate, Lagos, had been in police trouble since 2010 after the man identified simply as Sola gave him a forged bank draft to pay for a Toyota Camry car.

He told PUNCH METRO that on May 24, 2010, he was approached by one of his customers, Mr. Olajide Ogunbona, to sell his Toyota Camry car for him. He said that Sola bought the car, but duped him by paying with a bank draft which later turned out to be fake.

To worsen the matter, Sola had already taken possession of the car before Rufai discovered that the bank draft was fake.

He said he reported the matter to the police with Ogunbona but to his astonishment, he was arrested and detained for three weeks. He was only released after he signed an undertaking to pay back the N950, 000 by instalments.

Rufai said his ordeal intensified when he was later re-arrested and taken to Panti State Criminal and Investigation Department because he could not continue the payment as he had no money.

However, while Rufai was in detention at SCID, he saw Sola in one of the cells. He quickly alerted the police officers, telling them that he had seen the man responsible for his woes.

Rufai said, "On May 24, 2010, one of my customers, Mr. Ogunbona, gave me a Toyota Camry car to sell. I agreed to sell it because I felt that other customers who come to eat in our restaurant may be interested.

"Sola brought the car. Both of us went to a bank together and the bank stamped the bank draft. I called the owner of the car that someone had paid N950,000 for the car. He told me to release the car to him. Later I found out that the bank draft was fake. I took Ogunbona to a police station and reported the matter. The police surprisingly detained me. I spent about three weeks in detention before and was released after I had signed an undertaking to be repaying the man gradually.

"I started payment. But at a time, I did not have money to continue to pay. The police re-arrested me. I was taken to SCID, where I was also detained. After some days, they took me to court but the court did not hold that day. They took me back to another cell.

"Surprisingly, I saw the man that bought the car from me in the cell. They said they brought him from Abuja over another issue. I shouted and my Investigating Police Officer came and asked why I shouted and I told him. They took the man aside and showed him the bank draft and he owned up to the fraud."

He said after more investigation, the police released him (Rufai) on bail but asked him to be reporting to them periodically, adding that Sola had agreed to pay for the car.

Rufai said he was still heaving a sigh of relief, when he fell ill. He discovered in the hospital that he had contracted pneumonia in detention. While he was still battling the illness, he developed eye problem, which he said also started while he was in detention. He said doctors told him he needed about N150, 000 for the eye surgery.

He urged Nigerians, concerned non-governmental organisations and the government to intervene and stop the police from further harassing him since they had found the man that defrauded him.

The state Police Command spokesman, Mr. Samuel Jinadu, said the police were not victimising Rafiu but were only making him to assist them in the investigation.

He said he should feel free to give the police necessary information that could help in the investigation and possible prosecution of the culprit.

He also added that the man's alleged health ordeal was not caused by his stay in detention but could have been an existing ill health.

"The police are not victimising him. He is helping the police in investigation and possible prosecution of the culprits. All he needs do is to keep giving the police necessary information at his disposal that can lead to prosecution of the actual criminal" Jinadu said.

1776137.jpg?width=350Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan may have proved critics wrong and rather secured a pass mark in his political ambition to return to Government House on a second term bid and as the first flight touched down in the much talked about ongoing Asaba International
Airport. The project which commenced in 2009 has moved from the originally projected N7billion to N12billion, later N22billion and now N40 billion, thereby eliciting criticism from different quarters.

Originally, the first flight at the airport was scheduled for November 16, 2010. However several logistics and technical problems arose which delayed the landing of the first aircraft until Thursday, March 24, 2011 when the very first aircraft, Overland Airways - ATR42 (5N-BND) said to have been chartered by the Delta State Government and conveying the governor and other state officials landed at Asaba Airport at about 2:00pm on Thursday, March 24, 2011 even when the airport terminal building incomplete and may take some time before commercial operations can commence fully.

The first flight which can be described as a test run took off in Abuja at about 1:15pm and landed at the airport at about 2pm.

The 48-sitter commercial aircraft owned by Overland Airlines flew over the adjoining towns of Asaba, the state capital to create awareness on the history making event.

The pilot Gilbert Sampa said the flight was an interesting one, stressing that he was happy to be part of history making flight.

Mr. Sampa, who described the airport as good enough and of international standard said he flew with lot of experience because it was his first time in the area.

The second aircraft, a France Air passenger Leyer Jet D/CPDR landed the Asaba International Airport on Friday, March 25, 2011 from Abuja.

The pilot, Ekstrand Rolf said it took him 25 minutes to fly from Abuja to Asaba. The passenger plane eventually took off at exactly 10:00 am.

But a section of Deltans complain that it is risky to test run aircrafts on an incomplete project no matter the political gains involved.

“We hope Uduaghan will go beyond this political gimmick and actually complete the passenger terminal which ordinarily should not take too much financial resources from the state treasury.”

Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, apparently elated by the success of the first and second successful flights mocked “doubting Thomases” to come and see the actuality on ground, adding that he was fulfilled and gave God the glory

“I am so happy with this achievement. My dream has come true and all those who criticized the project will now shut up their mouth”.

Uduaghan said the construction of an airport takes up to seven years and expressed happiness that within a period of three years an aircraft was able to land at the airport.

The Governor disclosed that the airport will bring economic boom along with what he called “enormous multiplier effect” and called on Deltans to explore the business potentials the airport will attract and enjoined youths in the area not to harass or exploit prospective developers.

Brief History:

The Administration of Chief James Onanefe Ibori of 1999-2007 muted the idea of building a standard category C Airport, capable of handling big planes like Boeing 737 and Cargo aircrafts in Asaba, Delta state Capital and intended to enhance air travels, generate more revenue to boost the financial base of the State at completion.

The Ibori administration could not embark on the project but Dr. Emmanuel Ewata Uduaghan took the Airport project as part of the main stay of its 3- point Agenda of Peace and Security, Human Capital Development and Infrastructural Development as the foundation stone of the airport was laid in 2009 by former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Chief Vincent Ogbulafo.

The contract for the construction of the Airport was awarded to U.L.O .Consultants Ltd at an initial cost of N6.47 Billion.

Afterwards, the contractor, an Asaba indigene, Ogbueshi Uche Okpuno said he needed the sum of N22 billion to complete the Asaba International Airport project.

Ogbueshi Uche Okpuno had explained that the delay in completing the project was caused by a fundamental modification of the original design of the project which was at the insistence of the aviation regulatory bodies.

The ongoing Airport project, after what the state government referred to as challenges was reviewed upwards to nearly N40 billion Asaba Airport.

Deltans have continued to agitate over the huge and upward review of the cost of airport project to tune the tune of N40 billion as announced by Chief Uche Okpuno, the contractor handling the project.

It will be recalled that at the foundation laying ceremony, the governor Dr. Uduaghan had announced in the presence of Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), that the airport, which was initially estimated at N14 billion, a sum considered too high for the government would now cost N7 billion. The governor also assured the public that the project would be completed in 18 months, as the airport is a star project of his administration.

Meanwhile, the incessant reviews of the cost of the airport project and the conflicting completion date which have put to question on the sincerity of both the contractors and the government has been doused by the successful landing and take-off of the Aircrafts at the Asaba International Airport.

jonathandeclares.pngFormer President Olusegun Obasanjo has affirmed that federal character, zoning is alive and kicking in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He stated that this practice is essential if PDP is to remain the ruling party in Nigeria and that the party deserves

applause for being the only party that enshrined Federal Character, zoning and rotation in its constitution and also practicing it.

President Obasanjo who is widely regarded as Goodluck Jonathan`s benefactor, further stated that if voted into office, Goodluck Jonathan would serve as president for one term only. Hear him:

’We are impressed with the report that Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has already taken a unique and unprecedented step of declaring that he would only want to be a one term President. If so whether he knows it or not, that is a sacrifice and it is statesmanly. Rather than vilify him and pull him down, we as a party should applaud and commend him and Nigerians should reward and venerate him”.

“He has taken the first good step, let us encourage him to take more good steps to achieve what we need to achieve for this country by voting for him in landslide victory as the first elected president of Nigeria on basis of our common Nigerian identity and for the purpose of actualizing the Nigerian dream. God bless you all.’’

Full text of Obasanjo’s Speech reads:

‘’Mr President, we are here because we believe in what I call Nigerian dream. Mr President, we from the South West we were the first to collectively stick out our head to say this is the way, and what is the way? ‘’The way of Goodluck Jonathan for Nigeria. A Nigerian dream entails collective aspiration, collective hope, collective objective, collective target and collective fulfilment . It also entails our communality. And what is our communality in Nigeria? What is the communality between me and my brother from Sokoto? What is the communality between me and even my brother from Yenagoa?  What is the Communality between me and my brother from Maiduguri? What is the communality between me and my brother from Badagry or even from Ekiti? It is Nigerian identity. Nigerian Identity! That is our communality".

‘’If you say the communality is that we belong to the human race, so do the Europeans, so the Americans, so the Asians. But we are one communality, one identity, Nigerian identity. If we have a common identity, then we can have a common Nigerian dream".

"For me I see a Nigeria dream of land of unity in diversity. For me, I see the Nigerian dream in equal opportunities for all Nigerians; land of freedom and choices; land of prosperity, fairness, peace and justice; land of love, care, harmony among its people; land respected internationally and playing its rightful role within the comity of nations and land where no one is oppressed, discriminated against, enslaved or disadvantaged".

‘’For instance, let me go to an element of one of the aspects of the dream. When I was a young man, leaving secondary school, there was only one University in Nigeria. The opportunity for young men to go to university in Nigeria was then limited. Today there are 117 Universities in Nigeria expanded and enhanced opportunities. We have to match that with opportunity to access to employment and to good living standard. Your excellencies, this I believe is attainable and as a political party we in PDP have dreams. ‘’We have set about actualizing our Nigerian dream. You will see this in the formation of PDP. The history of the PDP speaks for its self. The constitution of PDP, the manifesto of our party and the performance of our party so far. We have set our hands on the plough and there is no looking back for PDP".

‘’Drawing from our national Constitution which upholds Federal Character, we are the only political party that enshrines Federal Character in our Constitution through zoning and rotation. And we should be proud of that. For us and for the foreseeable future that remains sacrosanct, I am an apostle of Federal Character under Murtala/Obasanjo administration and I cannot now preach anything different. The accident of history of the recent past must be understood for what it is, an unexpected situation and PDP as a party has addressed that issue".

‘’At the last meeting of BoT of our party last Saturday, the issue was tabled by the president as it was raised by three distinguished members of our party a day before that BoT meeting with the President. I was mandated to take up the position of the party with the three distinguished members of our party who raised the issue. They are General Ibrahim Babangida, General Aliyu Muhammed and Alhaji Abubakar Atiku".

"The following day, that was last Sunday, I took up the matter with General Ibrahim Babangida who expressed to me that the issue is not the accident of history but rather it is the issue of perception in some quarter that Federal Character, zoning and rotation as established and practiced by PDP have been jettisoned and permanently cancelled".

‘’I on behalf of the BoT allay the fear and I promised a public report while he briefs the other two party members with whom we saw the president on the eve of the BoT meeting".

‘’What am I saying? What am saying simply is that Federal Character, zoning and rotation in our party is alive and kicking. I personally see the practice of Federal Character, zoning and rotation of key political and governmental positions and offices by the PDP, if it will continue to be the ruling party in Nigeria, I see that position beyond my life time. It will only happen when unity, stability and democracy have been established with full confidence and trust by every body in the system and within the polity and among the participants for factors of competence, performance and track record to become predominant. PDP should be praised for being the only party that enshrined Federal Character, zoning and rotation in its constitution and also practicing it".

‘’PDP has brought stability and substantial predictability to the polity and to the system. I do not know who will be the President of Nigeria after Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. That is in the hand of God. But with the PDP policy and practice, I can reasonably guess from where in terms of section of the country from where the successor to President Goodluck Jonathan will come and no internal democracy or competition will be hereby destroyed".

‘’The recent resort to sentiments and emotions of religion and regionalism is self serving, unpatriotic and mischievous to say the least. It is also playing on dangerous emotive issues that ignite uncontrollable passion and can destabilize if not destroy our country. It is oblivious of the sacrifices others have made in the past for unity stability and democracy in Nigeria in giving out their lives, shedding their blood and in going to prison. I personally have done two out of these three sacrifices and I am ready to do the third if it will serve the best interest of Nigerian dream".

‘’Let me appeal to those who have embarked on those dangerous roles to desist from taking us on a perishable journey. A common identity as Nigerians there is more that binds us than separate us".

‘’I am a Nigerian born a Yoruba man and  I am proud of those identities, as they are for me complimentary. Our duties, responsibilities and obligations to our country and citizens and indeed as leaders must go side by side in our likes and demands. There must be certain values and virtues that would go concomitantly with our dream".

‘’Thomas Payne said and I quote “ my country is a world.” For me my country I hold dear. On two occasions I have had the opportunity, thanks to God and thanks to the people of Nigeria, to work for my successors in the government of Nigeria.  On both occasions, I never took the easy and destabilizing route of ethnic, regional or religious consideration rather I took the enduring route of national, uniting and stabilizing route. I worked for both President Shagari and President Yar’Adua to succeed me. Not just because they are Muslims, northerners or Hausa /Fulani, but because they could strengthen the unity, stability and democracy of Nigeria. We of course, with all the displeasure of ethnic chauvinists for doing what is right for our country, that is in the nature of the burden of leadership. A leader must lead no matter whose ox is gored.

‘’In the present circumstance, let me reiterate what I have said on a number of occasions, electing Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in his own right and on its own merit which is there to be seen as the President of Nigeria will enhance and strengthen our unity, stability and democracy and it will lead us towards achievement of the Nigerian dream.

‘’We are impressed with the report that Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has already taken a unique and unprecedented step of declaring that he would only want to be a one term President. If so whether he knows it or not, that is a sacrifice and it is statesmanly. Rather than vilify him and pull him down, we as a party should applaud and commend him and Nigerians should reward and venerate him. He has taken the first good step, let us encourage him to take more good steps to achieve what we need to achieve for this country by voting for him in landslide victory as the first elected president of Nigeria on basis of our common Nigerian identity and for the purpose of actualizing the Nigerian dream.

God bless you all.’’

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSV0LxjCm3Fi7PIMi_5Onv6BWqt1DAfbTq4tEmi_UPVu2W129I6HnJcGwAccording to the Pew Research Center’s analysis of recent US Census’s demographic data, one-in-seven new marriages in the US are interracial or interethnic. This number is stunning especially considering the fact that until forty-four years ago, interracial  liaisons were unlawful in 16 or so states. And even in states were they were not proscribed, they were frowned upon. At the very least, such relationships and encounters conflicted with the social mores of several enclaves. It sounds silly now, but really, it was only in June 1967 that the U.S. Supreme Court, in Loving v. Virginia, knocked down the Virginia law that forbade whites from marrying blacks. In the intervening years, however, America has become more diverse than any other country in the industrialized world.

The data in question seem not to separate Africans from the African-Americans and the general non-white pool. Therefore, one is unable to make statistically valid deductions as to why Africans, in greater numbers, are attracted to and are marrying white women. To be clear: this essay does not make any scientific statement or conclusion. I have only taken the liberty to make inferences from my years of cursory observations in and around several enclaves across the United States. What’s more, I have friends and friends of friends who have dated, dating, have married or are currently married to white and Hispanic women and women of Asian background. This essay, then, looks at why African men are attracted to non-African women. I have used white women to denote all non-African women from the US, Latin America, Europe and elsewhere. The question here is simple: why are African men into white women? What’s the attraction?

First is the liberal attitude of many African men. After several years of living in the US, some have come to the conclusion that African women are simply too raw, unrefined and conservative. The alternative then becomes women who, in their opinion, are stylish, sassy and spunky: nontraditional.  They seek women who are liberal and with expansive worldview that fits with their new orbit. Second is the issue of the proverbial American dream. That is to say that the African immigrants are not much different from other immigrants who come to the US in search of the American dream. America, after all, is the land of endless possibilities. To get their feet inside the American door, therefore, some believe they needed an agreeable native to help them through this process (without which the American dream may become very difficult to achieve).

The third factor revolves around the issue of compatibility and companionship. The room-mate phenomenon where you test-drive a relationship is not very common in Africa. Some men and women feel trapped by such reality. In a society where trial-and-error relationships are not very common, couples may be subjected to a life of anguish should things go awry. But in the US, one could test-drive a relationship without long term commitment. This kind of arrangement gives the Africans the opportunity to explore alternatives. And this, they cannot easily and readily do, with African women.

In the movies and in magazines, most white women are depicted as sensual, sexual and alluring; and as creatures to be taken. These images, and the messages they send have not escaped the mind of a typical African male. Once in the U.S, all he wants is what he has for so long desired. He itches to poke, to bite and to lick the once forbidden fruit. In other words, the untouchable become touchable. For many African men, once they taste the white honey, they may never go back to the blackberry basket. And the fifth reason is this:  for some Africans, the mind altering sex is a standalone reason to want the white woman. The argument, as some have posited, is that most African women are bad at sex. Even terrible! Most, I am told, just lay there -- motionless. White women, the argument goes, makes a man think of things he shouldn’t be thinking about; thoughts he shouldn’t be having, and fantasies he shouldn’t be floating in.

And of course, there is the rejection of the familiar. Americans are wont to say “Been there…done that.” Africans are wont to say it, too -- especially when it comes to African women. Their argument goes like this: “for years and years I dealt with Africans women; well, now that I am in America, why should I deal with them again?” As my cousin, Raphael Harry puts it, “…now they are in a foreign land they need to try something else and some ended up loving what they tasted and never went back.... I have seen it in Male and Female friends of mine.” It seems some make the conscious decision to abandon African women in favor of the whites. This kind of attitude is mostly prevalent among the younger generation of Africans from the English speaking African countries.

Also, there is old-fashioned love. By this I mean there are African men who love white women for no particular reason than old-fashioned love. For such men, loving and marrying white women has nothing to do with race or color or nationality or culture. Or even sex. They are not rejecting the African woman. No, not at all! They simply can’t help themselves and blind to several externalities. In order words, such men would have married a Chinese, Japanese, a Mongols or whomever and it still wouldn’t matter. Love is love and they marry the person they love and are in love with. It is that simple. These are men who believe that love conquers all and are determined to stay in and nurture their loving relationships.

And finally, there are the anecdotal reasons. For instance, there are those who believe that white women, in general, are more fun and accommodating and are easy to get along with. Africans -- and frankly, black men in general -- will tell you that for the most part, white girls are free of the high and low dramas that are usually associated with African and African-American women. Also, there is the belief that white women are easily manipulated. I doubt if this is true, though. And finally, it is believed that black women mostly wait for men to walk up to them, to propose -- while white women have no such hang-ups. If necessary, and under the right condition, they would make the first move. Many men, it seems, find this direct approach joyful and liberating and aphrodisiacal.

In spite of the aforesaid, one must be careful not to generalize. What is true of one person may not necessarily be true of another especially since we all have diverse life experiences, and usually find ourselves under different and varying circumstances. Nonetheless, it is important to understand why, in cities and states across the United States of America, an increasing number of African men are in long term relationship with white women. We need to understand the attraction. We also need to understand the ramifications, both in the short and long term. From the Washington DC metropolitan area to New York and Chicago down south to Houston and Dallas and westward to Seattle and Los Angeles, we see an alarming number of single African women (divorced and never remarried or have simply never been married before). Is it their choice to remain single or could it be that an increasing number of black men are no longer into black women. What’s going on?   Sabella Abidde lives in Montgomery, Alabama. The Argument Against Multitasking

multitasking.jpg?width=234I’m one of those people who can’t focus without a distraction free environment. It’s why I work best out of my home. Because in an office there are people and they’re a

distraction. There are also phones, break rooms, water coolers and, again, people.

If there’s other stuff going on it draws my attention away from my work and that’s not a good thing. As the mom of a son with ADHD,  I can’t help but wonder if he inherited that gene from me.

Multitasking isn’t a good idea for someone like me.

Close the Windows

You probably have at least half dozen windows open on your desktop as you work. Perhaps you have a particular program or application open to do your most important business task, you might also have a social network or two going, and even email and Skype so you can stay in touch.

Here’s what happens to me with multiple windows.

WordPress is open as I create the day’s blog post. However, I have another window open – whichever browser isn’t crashing on me that day – so I can do research for my post or find applicable links. Those links send me off on tangents and I read some cool stuff having nothing to do with my blog post. Skype pings. I stop and have a conversation. Every now and then I type. But wait, is that my Tweet deck calling? I check for news and tweet to my friends for about ten minutes before pulling away, ending my Skype chat and getting back to my blog post. Outlook is telling me there’s mail, do I check? You bet I do, and I respond because if I open mail and I don’t respond immediately it will get lost in a sea of unanswered email.

This is why I can’t have multiple windows open. In fact, I know very few people who can effectively multitask.Truthfully, work gets done quicker and more effectively without these distractions. It gotten to the point where I turn off the Internet connection and use offline editors for blogging so I’m not tempted to be taken away from my work.

Put the Gadgets Away

You know how I feel about this, gadgets are turning us into rude, rude people. We would never, in real life, abruptly turn away from a conversation to take part in another conversation, yet that’s what we do every time we look at our gadgets while talking with someone else. Ditto at checking gadgets during meals, seminars and public speaking engagements and any time someone else is doing something that requires our attention. I see it during church, during family time have dinner or a movie out, at barbecues and picnics, on the beach. We’re supposed to be enjoying family, friends or life outside of work, yet our attention is diverted to our cell phones and iPads.

It’s funny how quickly we become addicted as well. I gave in to a smart phone a year and a half ago and already it’s something I can’t live without. Can most of my email wait until the weekend is over to receive a response? Absolutely! But I still check it several times while on the supermarket line, visiting the inlaws or watching my son’s taekwondo lessons. Do I need to update everyone on Facebook and Twitter to every step of my day? No. No, I don’t. But I do anyway. Chances are if I cut it down a bit you wouldn’t miss me.

Focus, Deb, Focus

We’re told multitasking is a good thing, that we need to wear many hats to succeed in this fast paced business world, but I’ll argument otherwise. To succeed we need to focus and do a job correctly and to the best of our ability. We can’t do that with half a dozen windows open or stopping to tweet from our gadgets every ten minutes.

I’ll argue that multitasking isn’t a good thing. It makes us rude, easily distracted people.

What says you?

In my books, Buhari is a pretentious anti-corruption fighter. The trajectory of a man's journey in public life matters. For the follwoing reasons I can not vote for Buhari

1. He is an oligarch who does not believe in equality before the law. The way he jailed Lateef Jakande, Jim Nwobodo, Ambrose Ali, Pa Adekunle Ajasin, Chief Ayo Ojewumi on cases that had no foundation and allowed Awwal Ibrahim, the then Niger State governor, who was arrested in Heathrow Airport in London with 14 million pounds sterling and several millions of Niara and dollars to be under house arrest is my evidence. He also allowed Shehu Kangiwa, Sokoto State Governor who conducted and supervised the famous Bakolori Massacre of poor peasant farmers whose land were appropriated without compesation to remain under house arrest.

1(a) Ayo Ojewumi became blind as a result of his imprisonment over false charges and died shortly after.

1 (b) Prof. Ambrose Alli also became blind as a result of this false imprisonment. When he died, he had only one undeveloped plot of land to his name.

1© Pa Adekule Ajasin was never the same after his eventual release and remained sickly for the rest of his life. Whe he died, he never had any property anywhere in the world except the one he had built from his sweat as long term teacher and school principal in Owo township.

2. He put in place a retroactive law that killed three men, innocent men in my book, by public execution. He left untouched an alleged well known drug baron in Ibrahim Babangida who later overthrew his government.

3. He jailed Ndukar Irabor and Tunde Thompson of the Guardian on stories that were factually true under Decree 4. He had told the Nigerian journalists then that it did not matter whether the story reported was true or not,

4. He supervised the smuggling of 53 suitcases filled with cash througth the MMA against the protests of General Tunde Idiagbon and ironically, Abubakar Atiku, the then Director General of the Customs who later became the Vice President and a compromised politician himself. This smuggling of the suit cases were supervised by his ADC, Col. Mustapha Jokolo.

5. He jailed Fela Anikulapo -Kuti on trumped up charges under emergency law which prompted the sentencing judge to confess that he was ordered to do so and apologised to the late musician. It was Buhari's administration that said it has "decided to deal with this Fela problem once and for all."

6. He convinced all the northern political leaders against allowing the National Identity Card program because according to him, this would unravel the myth of Northern population majority

7. He is an Islamic fundamentalist, the Bin Laden of Nigeria, who told his northern followers never to vote for anyone who was not a muslim.

8. He is a coup plotter.

9. He has never been able to account to Nigerians what he did with the 20 billion Naira of the Petroleum Trust Fund of which he was the chairman under Sani Abacha.

9(a) He has not been able to point to any project that he prosecuted outside the Northern Nigeria with the so-caled trust fund.

10. He was in full support of all the atrocities of Sani Abacha against the Nigerian people. There is no single record of his criticism of Sani Abacha during those dark days when Nigeria was on precipice. It shows that he is a patriot of convenience and as such unfit to lead the country.

11. Buhari, as part of his tribalistic practices placed President Shagari under house arrest inside a palatia mansion in Ikoyi while he locked up Shagari's Vice, Alex Ekwueme in Kirikiri Prison. Shagari is Hausa/Fulani like him while Alex Ekwueme is an Igboman.

12. Ikemba Emeka Ojukwu, another Igboman who returned from 13years exile just a little over a year then was as well locked up in Kiri Kiri Prison by meanhearted Buhari.Up till today we are not told what was Emeka's offence.

13. Busari Adelakun died of ulcer because Buhari refused him to be taken out of prison for immediate medical attention. The then Governor of Ogun State,Bisi Onabanjo suffered similar fate which we were told led to his untimely death.

14. Buhari ransacked the house of our late sage, Obafemi Awolowo and confisticated his International passport. Which civilized democratic society would elect the likes of Buhari as President, the same individual who overthrew an elected President? Never!

15. Plus Buhari having Sam Mbakwe in jail, went for one of Mbakwe's wives. He established himself again for what he was/is letting Mbakwe receive in jailhouse news of the death of another of Mbakwe's two wives. One (I can't remember his name now; Odenigbo?) also died in jail.

16. Buhari's henchman and sponsor, CPC governorship candidate for Kano State, is Mohammed Abacha, the same person that had/ran a personal killing squad, co ordinated the killing of Kudirat Abiola & attempted to kill Ibru; and also stashed money in underground tanks, all less than 13 years ago....Nigerians have very short selective memory. Shame!

17. Buhari discriminated against persons from other ethnic groups/faiths; and that as PTF Chairman, he employed an overwhelming number of Fulani/Hausa/Moslem people at the detriment of other groups and concentrated PTF projects in the North. If in doubt read El Rufai's testimony where he wrote about Katsina boys who used the money they made at PTF to bankroll Yar'Adua's election in 1999.

18. Buhari is unforgiven. When he "took over" by coup in 1983, even remembered an article written a very very long time ago by Bisi Onabanjo ('The Mallams are coming') and a later one in which Onabanjo wrote that people should watch out for that "gangly officer from the north" after Buhari gave a no holds barred speech at some Army function where he was reported to be very openly pro Fulani and pro Islam to the exclusive of all else and also talked about termination of democratic rule. For that, Onabanjo got one of the harshest jail terms and treatments.

19. Buhari intolerance is worse than Obasanjo's. When he was adopted as the ANPP's candidate on the night of the party's Primaries without prior warning to the other candidates and a few of them protested, Buhari got up and made a speech that those people must be disciplined. I subsequently saw him on BBC's "hard talk" and he frightened me and the interviewer with his archaic and fundamentalist intolerant views. His understanding and articulation is very much in doubt.

20. The evil genius, IBB and his crew similarly ran rings around Buhari. On the 10th anniversary of Abacha's demise, Buhari said that Abacha stole nothing from Nigeria! Despite millions of Dollars recovered from banks around the world and the Abacha family signing a formal agreement to return over $1 billion dollars, Buhari still said that Abacha's stealing remains an unproved allegation!!!! Why? Because Abacha set Buhari up like an emperor and let him use oil money from the Niger Delta to develop the North without supervision or questions.

21. Buhari snubbed the same Nigerians he now wants their votes by refusing to appear before Justice Oputa Truth and Reconciliation Panel. Despite the fact that Buhari knew how inportant reconciliation is to the stability of democracy. Buhari has never apologised at anytime.

22. Buhari executed Lawal Ojuolape (30), Bernard Ogedengbe (29) and Bartholomew Owoh (26). To put it quite plainly, one of those three – Ogedengbe - was executed for a crime that did not carry a capital forfeit at the time it was committed. and At the time Ogedengbe committed the crime it did not carry that punishment. If we must live as civilised citizens we must go by the rules. Article 11.2 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights reads: "No one shall be held guilty of any penal offence on account of any act or omission WHICH DID NOT CONSTITUTE A PENAL OFFENCE, under national or international law at the time when it was committed. NOR SHALL A HEAVIER PUNISHMENT BE IMPOSED THAN THE ONE THAT WAS APPLICABLE AT THE TIME THE PENAL OFFENCE WAS COMMITTED. Killing people with retroactive laws is not the civilised thing to do - and for as long as we will have people who refuse to see the truth only because their heroes are inching to rule when they have not purged themselves we will continue to wallow in misery.

If Nigerians reward dangerous, insensitive, dishonest, mean, cruel, partial, egoistic, religious, fundamendalist, conscienceless human being like MOHAMMADU BUHARI with the presidency of Nigeria with his kind of track record, then why do we still wonder why Nigeria has not and will not make it?

I can not in good conscience support Buhari's candidacy on the above grounds. I wish we have intelligent people who know what democracy means. I wish we have civilized minds. However, I am 100 percent sure that Buhari will never again rule Nigeria.

For the good of Nigeria, vote any other candidate, but SAY NO TO BUHARI!!!

Another one of the victims shot dead at Ikot Ekpene by the ACN supportersSenator JJ Akpan Udoedehe ACN gubernatorial candidate in Akwa Ibom state has been arrested over his role in the mayhem that occurred in the state early in the week. Police sources told huhuonline.com that his arrest was in connection to a text message

allegedly sent from his mobile phone, calling for a reprisal attack.

The text message obtained exclusively by huhuonline.com reads:

“IBIBIO supporters of Sen. Udoedehe were SLAUGHTERED in IKOT EKPENE, while Godswill Akpabio & Annangs still move freely in IBIBIO LAND! WE MUST REVENGE speedily”.

Udohehe arrest was confirmed by his lawyer, Barrister Andem E. Ndem, who issued a statement, chronicling Mr.Udohehe ordeal.  Hear him:

"On Wednesday, 23rd March 2011,the Inspector-General of Police put a call through to Senator Akpan Udodehe inviting him for a chat in respect of the mayhem that occurred in Akwa Ibom State the previous day".

"As an innocent law abiding citizen, he suspended his campaign and proceeded to Abuja on Thursday the 24th to keep a date with the IGP. He went to see the IGP in company of his Personal Attorney, Barrister Andem E. Ndem. This meeting turned out to be very revealing and threw-up the following facts, namely";

"The IGP admitted that he has not received any formal briefing from Akwa Ibom State Command of the Police Force regarding what happened. He admitted further that for now, all he knows were derived from newspaper reports read by Nigerians". "He expressed shock at the explanation of the Senator that what actually happened was that he was ambushed in Ikot Ekpene by agents of Governor Akpabio who had earlier warned that he should not come there on campaign and the military-style ambush was so vicious that he survived by sheer grace of God. His bomb-proof campaign vehicle and the assistance of the Police Area Commander who escorted him was under shelling to the borrder between Ikot Ekpene and Uyo before departing".

"Barrister Ndem utilised that opportunity to effect personal service on the IGP of the court order of further injunction and mandatory provision of armed police security for the Senator. His office duly acknowledged receipt of this Court Order".

"The IGP also admitted that Governor Akpabio recently came to him to complain that the last Commissioner of Police. Mr Sani Magaji, was not "'PERFORMING"' and he should be changed. Consequently, he, the IGP, obliged him this request without deference to his performance evaluation report which actually revealed that the Police Commissioner was a strong-willed and principled officer who refused to compromise with Gov. Akpabio on the security situation in the State".

"Barrister Ndem informed the IGP that his decision to change the Police Commissioner was wrong as same is unsupportable by the facts on ground because the crime rate in the State has actually reduced under his leadership. He procceeded to inform him that the real reason why Gov. Akpabio was not comfortable with the CP was

due to his principled and uncompromising stance on issues of Insecurity and corruption.Barrister Ndem went on to inform the IGP that the immediate cause of Gov. Akpabio''s discomfort was the arrest of two members of PEACE HOUSE namely BASKET and Ken Etim with AK47 AND THE REFUSAL BY THE CP TO RELEASE THEM BASED ON THE ORDERS OF GOV AKPABIO. The IGP had no explanation for this. Consequently, Barrister Ndem demanded that the IGP should reverse himself and return our CP failing which we shall take up the matter with Police Service Commission which oversees issues of this nature".

"Thereafter, the IGP handed us over to his Commissioner in charge of Administration, CP Jonathan Johnson to obtain Senator’s statement. We obliged. Thereafter, the waiting game started until the IGP and other senior officers started leaving their offices cryptically. At about 11pm, a phone call came that Senator should be detained overnight as they intend to charge

 him to court this morning".

"It is not clear at this time what they want to charge him for but it is reasonably suspected that they may seek a remand order from court to keep Senator beyond the mandatory 48 hours because they intend to keep him out of circulation for the purpose of the election as there is no shred of evidence linking senator to violence of any kind anywhere. Whatever they come up

with, we shall respond appropriately". Bar. Ndem affirmed

6a00d8341c630a53ef0120a7a43015970b-pi-300x190.jpgNew York — On Good Morning America this morning, Chris Brown flew into a rage while being asked about Rihanna by anchor Robin Roberts.

When Brown came to the show, he was briefed that he would be asked about the beating incident with the R&B/Pop starlet.

Brown, who was promoting his new album F.A.M.E., was on the show hoping to talk about his return to the top. But, as we all know now that didn’t last long. Reports have him breaking glass, smashing furniture and ripping off his shirt in a rage backstage.

Brown went on to tweet that it’s unfair that when he messes up, it’s a big mess; and when people like Charlie Sheen mess up, it’s entertainment.

What do you think? Do you feel Chris Brown is getting a bad rap, while Sheen is getting a pass?

12166305473?profile=originalThe spate of accident related deaths is crazy and alarming.

This is fresh off the press.

Phones have been buzzing and messages flooding in.

And, sadly, we can now confirm that Chidinma Mbalaso, the beautiful Koko Mansion contestant, who was yesterday involved in a road mishap in Kaduna, is dead.

Details are scanty for now, but multiple sources, including Koko Mansion winner Bolanle Okhiria and another contestant Sharon Ojong have confirmed Chidinma’s unfortunate passing.

Okhiria was in tears when she spoke with us few minutes ago.

Also, Abuja-based Amara Nwakpa, who sources say was close to the deceased, has taken to microbloging site Twitter to announce her death and bless her soul. ‘RIP Chidinma Mbalaso – 22 Jan 1989 – 25 Mar 2011. You will be remembered fondly and with love. Adieu little sister’ Nwakpa posted through his handle (@bubusn).

Mbalaso, who schooled at University of Abuja, was reportedly in a Coma for hours, as friends and family members ran helter-skelter trying to get her blood donation.

‘She lost so much blood. We were really working hard all night to get blood donations’ a friend tells us.

From midnight to this morning, several messages were spreading, urging anyone with contacts in Kaduna to please rise up and convince them to donate blood for the young lady.

‘Chidinma is at St Gerald’s hospital in Kaduna. Please call … (numbers withheld) if you can help. If you’re a B- or O-. She needs blood donation. Please save a life. Thanks!’

A reliable source tells us she was on her way back to Abuja, from Kaduna where she had gone to pick up her car. ‘This was her first car; she paid for with her money. She was driving back to Abuja when a motorcycle ran into her path. She was trying to avoid the motorcycle when she lost control…’

Miss Mbalaso’s death, coming a day after that of comedian CD John, and about a year to the anniversary of Dagrin’s, brings to the fore again, the horrible state of Nigerian roads, and the mess our medical system is in.

No word yet from HiTV or Mohits, but our reporters are working the phones to get more details and reactions.

STORY DEVELOPING…

Chidinma Mbalaso from the reality television show, Koko Mansion, is dead. According to multiple sources, the 22 year old was involved in a car crash on the Kaduna-Abuja road yesterday March, 24 2011 and died early this morning at St Gerald’s hospital in Kaduna.

Ayo Rotimi, who worked as music supervisor during the Koko Mansion show said “[I] am still shocked myself. I heard the news yesterday and also that she was in a coma and I have been seeing tweets on the issue. I’m really am unhappy about it. We are still dealing with CD John’s death and now this. What’s happening to our youth?”. Meanwhile Koko Mansion housemate, Rita Isoken appeared to be too upset to remark. “Please not today,” Isoken said over the phone.

Before her death, Mbalaso was said to have gone into a coma and was in need of a blood donor. She was one of the four finalists on the Mo’Hits sponsored TV show Koko Mansion in 2009.

woman-doctor-450kc032211.jpg?width=234Planning to schedule your annual checkup? Besides inquiring about your Pap test, there are other questions women of all ages should pose to their physician.

In continuation of Women's History Month, we sought the expertise of sex therapist Dr. Hilda Hutcherson, a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology and associate dean for diversity and minority affairs at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, and Dr. Maiysha Clairborne, a holistic medical doctor and founder of Mind Body Spirit Wellness Inc., to compile a list of 10 things every woman should ask their doctors.

1. Can the sexual activity I'm engaging in put me at high risk for any STDs?

Going in for your annual Pap exam doesn't mean you'll automatically get tested for all STDs. Share with your doctor the sexual acts you engage in so he or she can know what tests to give you.

"There are some sexually transmitted diseases that go beyond a pelvic exam," Hutcherson says. For example, if you're having anal sex, ask for a rectal exam because rectal cancer can be caused by HPV.

2. What is my risk for heart disease?

Few women realize that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women. Unfortunately, black women have a higher risk, Clairborne says. Obesity, smoking and hypertension put women at risk, a reason why knowing the symptoms are important.

3. What is a healthy weight for me?

Weight charts and body mass index (BMI) can be a little sketchy. That's why, from a medical standpoint, it's important to ask your doctor this.

Obesity increases the risks of ailments like hypertension, diabetes and heart disease and can potentially cause infertility and complications with conception, Hutcherson says. Being underweight also can cause infertility.

4. Am I able to conceive?

The earlier you ask, the better. "Women come to me when they're almost 40 [saying], 'Now, I'm ready to have a baby,' " Hutcherson says. It's true, some women can have their first child in their 40s, but chances are slimmer. Even though "black women tend to be better at having these babies later than Caucasian women," sooner is better than later, she says.

5. Why can't I have an orgasm?

Considering that only 25 percent of women have orgasms through intercourse alone, this is a popular question. "Ask what can make sex more enjoyable for you," Clairborne suggests.

There may be many reasons why, including vaginal dryness, a decreased libido - an issue for a lot of women, particularly for postmenopausal women or after just having children - and your partner not stimulating your clitoris properly... or at all. One thing to remember: A woman's orgasm generally begins in her mind.

6. Do I have fibroids?

The medical community doesn't know how uterine fibroid tumors are created, but Hutcherson says it appears genetics play a role. Estrogen also contributes to their growth.

"Women who we think eat a lot of meat from animals, who eat a lot of protein, have problems with fibroids, [versus] those who have a macrobiotic vegetable-based diet," she says.

Although benign, the tumors can impede conception and give the stomach a bulging appearance.

7. Are there any recommended alternatives to medication?

Most traditional doctors may not know options, but you can ask them to refer you to someone who does, Clairborne says. It's important to tell your doctor about everything you're doing if you go the holistic route. "Be completely transparent, be completely honest. We can make better decisions about your care if we know what you are doing," says Clairborne.

8. What are the symptoms of depression and anxiety?

African-American culture tends to be a little hush-hush when it comes to discussing depression. "There's a stigma around depression in the black community," Clairborne says. Left untreated, depression can affect sexual desire and sleep, and even snowball into suicide.

9. Why?

Your health is your responsibility, so get in the habit of asking your doctor why they're taking a particular action. If your physician makes a diagnosis or prescribes any medication, know the reasons for the decision. Also, don't be afraid to do your own research. "Be curious about your health and that includes medication," Clairborne says.

10. Are there any support groups that could help me with this?

Ask your doctor for resources. "If they say lose weight, ask, 'What resources do you have to help me do that?'" advises Clairborne. They may have resources in their office ready to share, whether it's a handout, groups to call or by simply going online.

Magic-Johnson.jpg?width=234Today’s words of wisdom comes from Earvin “Magic” Johnson.

Earvin “Magic” Johnson Jr. (born August 14, 1959) is a retired American professional basketball player who played point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). After winning championships in high school and college, Johnson was selected first overall in the 1979 NBA Draft by the Lakers. He won a championship and an NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award in his rookie season, and won four more championships with the Lakers during the 1980s. Johnson retired abruptly in 1991 after announcing that he had contracted the HIV virus, but returned to play in the 1992 All-Star Game, winning the All-Star MVP Award. After protests from his fellow players, he retired again for four years, but returned in 1996, at age 37, to play 32 games for the Lakers before retiring for the third and final time.

Johnson’s career achievements include three NBA MVP Awards, nine NBA Finals appearances, twelve All-Star games, and ten All-NBA First and Second Team nominations. He led the league in regular-season assists four times, and is the NBA’s all-time leader in assists per game, with an average of 11.2. Johnson was a member of the “Dream Team”, the U.S. basketball team that won the Olympic gold medal in 1992.

Johnson was honored as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1996, and enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002. He was rated the greatest NBA point guard of all time by ESPN in 2007. His friendship and rivalry with Boston Celtics star Larry Bird, whom he faced in the 1979 NCAA finals and three NBA championship series, were well documented. Since his retirement, Johnson has been an advocate for HIV/AIDS prevention and safe sex, as well as an entrepreneur, philanthropist and motivational speaker.

WORDS OF WISDOM: EARVIN “MAGIC’ JOHNSON

All kids need is a little help, a little hope and somebody who believes in them.

Ask not what your teammates can do for you. Ask what you can do for your teammates.

I am a businessman. This is what I do each and every day. I love it. I love coming to work. I never have a bad day.

I tell you, it’s funny because the only time I think about HIV is when I have to take my medicine twice a day.

I want to be here for a long time, so I am going to do everything I have to do to be here. And I want to walk my daughter down the aisle and give her away to somebody some day. I want to make sure I am still here to make sure my two young sons become men.

I wanted to do two things when I was growing up, about your age. I wanted to play in the NBA, and I wanted to be a businessman after my basketball career was over, and that is what I am doing now.
I’m from there. You know, when you grow up with these people and see them every day and then you look at the numbers it was easy; it was a no-brainer. And when Sony took a look, it was a no-brainer to them, too.

If somebody says no to you, or if you get cut, Michael Jordan was cut his first year, but he came back and he was the best ever. That is what you have to have. The attitude that I’m going to show everybody, I’m going to work hard to get better and better.

If you’re a competitive person, that stays with you. You don’t stop. You always look over your shoulder.

My diet is mostly chicken and fish. I make sure I get a lot of vegetables, a lot of fruit. I am a big fruit man, I am a vegetable man anyway. And I also get a lot of rest. That’s the key I may be up early, but I’m in bed early too.

Research your idea. See if there’s a demand. A lot of people have great ideas, but they don’t know if there’s a need for it. You also have to research your competition.

The audience likes their emotions to be touched. They want to laugh and cry and feel good.

The first year was hard for me to deal with. The second year was a little bit easier, but still difficult. It took me five years to get it out of me. It was a difficult moment, a difficult time.

The important thing is this Just because I’m doing well doesn’t mean that they’re going to do well if they get HIV. A lot of people have died since I have announced. This disease is not going anywhere.

The real story is that I had unprotected sex. That’s that. That’s easy.

Young people want you to be real with them.
