The Vice President is Mohammed Namadi Sambo as National Assembly confirms nomination

The National Assembly, in a unanimous decision, has approved the nomination of Kaduna State governor, Namadi Sambo as the nation’s Vice President.

The Senate’s plenary session lasted barely 10 minutes after the correspondence from the President was read, officially notifying the Senators of the President’s
nomination.

The nomination was approved in absentia as Mr Sambo did not attend the Senate’s session. The Federal House of Representatives held its session at the same time
with that of the Senate. The office of the Vice-President became vacant
when Goodluck Jonathan became President.

Profile:

Mohammed Namadi Sambo was born on the 2nd of August, 1954 in Zaria, Kaduna State of Nigeria. He started his Educational Career between the year 1959 at Baptist Primary School, Kakuri, Kaduna, Kobi Primary School
in Bauchi and Towns School No. 1 in Zaria. Between 1967 to 1971, he
attended Government Secondary School now Alhuda-Huda College in Zaria.
He attended the School of Basic Studies at the Ahmadu Bello University,
Zaria in 1972, after which he gained admission into the famous
Department of Architecture, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria 1973 and
graduated in 1976 with Bachelor of Science degree with Honours in
Architecture (B. Sc. (Hons) and holds a Masters degree (M. Sc.) Arch
1978. He served with the Oyo State Ministry of Works and Housing for the
National Youth Service Corps up to August1979.

In 1988 he was appointed Honourable Commissioner for Works, Transport and Housing, Kaduna. In 1990, Namadi Sambo left the service of Kaduna State Government and went back to his private practice.

In May 2007, Mohammed Namadi Sambo assumed office of the Governor of Kaduna State, Nigeria. His term ended on 18 May 2010.

Yar’Adua confirms Jonathan as Acting President. Senior Special Adviser Segun Adeniyi reads note

Ailing President, Umaru Yar’Adua has acknowledged Goodluck Jonathan as the nation’s Acting President.

In a broadcast, the Senior Special Adviser to the President, Segun Adeniyi, who read a note from the ailing president, said all aides in the presidency, including all those who just returned from Saudi Arabia, are to work under the acting president until President Yar’Adua fully recovers.

In an interview with newsmen, Mr Adeniyi said, “We run one presidency and the Acting President has already called for a meeting and I believe the meeting will hold tomorrow to brief us on how things will go and how he will run the presidency and everybody is included, especially those who just returned from Saudi Arabia. So it’s just one presidency and we are all under Mr Jonathan now as the acting president and commander in chief until the president returns to office fully.”

He also said it was unfair for people to say Turai Yar’Adua has taken over power, because Jonathan wanted to pay her a visit, adding that Mr. Jonathan paying a visit to the first family is the right thing to do.

“It’s been very unfair to the first lady at the time she is nursing her husband. So there is no such thing and you don’t expect the Acting President to report to the first lady, it is abnormal and it won’t happen. What the Acting President actually said was that he was going to see the first lady and ask about the husband, that is the president, and probably see him. To me, it is a normal situation, which I believe, is the natural thing to do.” Mr. Adeniyi said.

On the relationship between the president and Mr Jonathan, Mr Adeniyi said “Good. Very cordial relation. I know for a fact that when the president was in Saudi Arabia medical report of the president was being sent to the Acting President on the instruction of the president. The last one last Friday, Dr. Salisu, the president’s chief physician, sent to the Acting President through the ambassador, I was copied, I have a copy of the medical report on the president’s health.”

Senate confirms Ms Arunma Oteh as head of Securities and Exchange Commission

The senate has confirmed the appointment of Arunma Oteh as the Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Also confirmed on Thursday was the appointment of Ahmed Remi Makele as an Executive Commissioner (Legal & Compliance). Both were nominated by President Umaru Yar’Adua in July this year and their names were forwarded to the senate for confirmation in accordance with the provisions of the Investment and Securities Act 2007. Following the confirmation, Ms. Oteh will take over from Daisy Ikineh, who has been acting as the commission’s Director General since Musa Alfaki resigned from the position in April this year after he was allegedly implicated in the poor handling of the AP share manipulation saga. During the screening exercise that preceded her confirmation, senators praised Ms Oteh’s resume. She was described as a “round peg in a round hole”. “I think that for once we have made a choice based on qualification and not political inclinations,” Victor Ndoma-Egba (PDP Cross River State) said. The new SEC bosses Ms Oteh, 41, has over 16 years of capital market experience and is currently the Vice-President (Corporate Services) of the African Development Bank Group (ADB). Before becoming the vice president of the ADB, she was the Bank’s Group Treasurer for 5 years (2001-2006) with overall responsibility for the Bank’s fund raising and investments in major international capital markets. She has worked variously in ADB as Division Manager Investments and Trading Room from 1997 to 2001, and Senior Investment Officer/Senior Capital Markets Officer from 1993 to 1997. Cumulatively, she has worked with ADB for over 16 years. Before joining the ADB, the new SEC chief worked in corporate finance, consulting, teaching and research for several institutions, including the Harvard Institute for International Development, USA, and Centre Point Investments Limited Lagos, Nigeria. She is on the board of a number of organisations, including the advisory board of the African Investor, as well as the International Financing Facility of Immunization (IFFIm), a charity organization. Ms Oteh has an MBA from Harvard University, USA, and a First Class Honours Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. She has received both a Harvard Fellowship Award and a National Merit Award. Mr. Makele is presently the Associate Director, Legal Risk & Compliance of DTZ Group Holdings Plc, an international corporate finance and investment management company. He has also previously served as the Senior Manager, Regulation & Compliance at Royal Bank of Canada/Dexia Group – one of the World’s top 10 global custodians. He has worked with other major UK legal and financial companies, as well as the UK Personal Investment Authority (now Financial Services Authority). Mr. Makele has also consulted domestically for the Investment & Securities Tribunal (IST) and published papers on a number of domestic financial issues. He is from Kogi State and has a Masters degree in Public International Law from University of Cambridge and BA Honours in Law from University of Sussex, United Kingdom. He also has a diploma in Regulation and Compliance from the UK Securities & Investment institute and is a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales.

SHE IS ALIVE ! Maryam Babangida Alive Vanguard confirms

By Omoh Gabriel LAGOS — Former First Lady, Mrs Maryam Babangida, yesterday said she is alive and kicking. She spoke to Vanguard on phone allaying the fears that she was dead. She said; “I do not know that you people in Vanguard love me this much. Only God gives life and takes it. I am alive, well, I am okay. I don’t know where people got the rumour from.” She further said: “I am surprised that some people are wishing me dead, I am still alive, I thank Almighty Allah for His mercies and kindness. I will soon join you at home”. Her conversation with Vanguard yesterday put to rest the rumour of her death which had spread like wildfire. She was said to be terminally ill of cancer at the University of California (UCLA) Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center in Los Angeles. The rumour mill also said that the former First Lady was undergoing chemotherapy and pain therapy in the intensive care unit of center in the past few days. It was also said that the former military President General Ibrahim Babangida joined his wife a few weeks ago. Last week, General Babangida and his children were even said to have been summoned to Maryam’s bedside as her condition was said to be deteriorating. Mohammed, the first son of Maryam, was said to have returned to Nigeria two nights ago to brief members of the extended family about the condition of his mother in Los Angeles. Maryam Babangida, former First Lady of Nigeria and Chairperson for the Better Life for Rural Woman, remains the toast of Nigerian women even in her advance years. She is one of the most glamorous and most photographed first ladies in Nigeria’s history. Full of zest, she became a recurring decimal in top-rate state and social functions within and outside Nigeria. Mrs. Babangida often brought smiles on the faces of many people particularly because of her sense of style and the glitter she brings to every occasion she attends. Nigeria’s history has it that Mrs. Babangida as wife of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, who was the nation’s president between 1985 and 1993 started the office of the first lady and went further to add glamour to it.
