Chief Security Officer to late General Sani Abacha yesterday turned his visit to Kaduna state into a 2015 campaign speeches.

Al-Mustapha, who had been in detention for nearly 15 years, was acquitted by the Court of Appeal Lagos recently over the killing of Kudirat, wife of M.K.O Abiola, the presumed winner of 1913 presidential election.

Major Al-Mustapha, arrived Kaduna state metropolis from Zaria where he paid a visit to the Emir of Zazzau, Dr. Shehu Idris around 2.10pm. 

Hundreds of youths trooped out to receive him and chanted , “ 2015: Major Al-Mustapha for president.”

Al-Mustapha seized the moment and responding to the youths under the umbrella of Arewa Youth Forum (AYF) said: “For those of you that believe there is hopelessness in the country, we must all team up to make the direction for change. You may not understand now but when the direction is defined, when the rail is laid you will know it.

“I was told that when I was released in Lagos, youths in Kaduna, Kano and other parts of the North trooped out to celebrate my release. Those in the south also did same, because I was told. I thought I was forgotten but this has shown me that you love me and I love you all.

According to him, his release was a victory for democracy and that he would meet with all youth bodies and organisations in both North and South in order to chart a new course.

In his address, the National President of AYF, Comrade Gambo Ibrahim Gujungu said the situation they found themselves in was unfortunate and that they will change the norm at all cost.

Speaking when he received the former CSO in his residence; Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Gumi urged him to see his incarceration as the will of Allah and that he should forgive all those that played role in it.

“It is indeed a happy day for us and as he said it is a big plus to democracy and judiciary in Nigeria. We have come of age where no innocent person should be incarcerated for no reason. We pray Allah will give peace to our nation and for everybody to live in peace and in a peaceful environment.

Get rich or grow old while trying .President Goodluck Jonathan and his running mate think so little of Nigerians that they have so far fled any venue where the presidential candidates have been invited to hold a debate. But when young Nigerians invited all the candidates to a debate tagged “What About Us?” to be anchored by acclaimed novelist, Chimamanda Adichie, many of them were certain that Mr. Jonathan would not say no to them.

They obviously didn’t know the man.

Instead of facing Adichie, Mr. Jonathan arranged his own one-man “debate,” inviting Nigeria’s hip-hop star, D'banj (whose real name is Dapo Daniel Oyebanjo) to ask him questions in a low-grade, soft session.

On March 17, 2011, D’banj took off his so-called Kokomaster hat and replaced it with that of the voice of the Nigerian youth as he took it upon himself to ask President Jonathan questions "concerning the youth."

We would not have bothered if Jonathan was being prepped for a reality show on D'banj's Koko mansion, but this was a session with a man asking Nigerian voters, including young ones, to entrust him with the highest political office in their country.

Having decided to duck from a debate organized by numerous Nigerian youth groups, Mr. Jonathan nevertheless wanted to show off that he's got the backing of the Nigerian youth. He chose a well-known popular entertainer as collaborator in a patently deceptive game.

Jonathan got it wrong!

Jonathan must have figured that the interview occurred at an opportune moment. It was his attempt to divert attention from the calls for real debates on an independent platform. Yet, in giving D’banj the job of asking him questions, Mr. Jonathan sought to give the impression that he’s in touch with the youth—and has great regard for them. But by choosing a rich stage performer who is obviously out of touch with the realities of the average Nigerian youth, President Jonathan showed himself up as a clueless leader who is out of tune with the vast majority of Nigerian youth and their top issues in the upcoming elections.

D'banj was an embarrassment. He spent much of the interview nodding blankly at Goodluck Jonathan's uninformed answers. The social media universe was merciless. It twittered insults at D’banj and his sponsor, Jonathan. On facebook, more barbs were flung at the two men. Many of D’Banj’s fans pointed to their newfound disrespect for the artist who is now seen as a man with a purchase price.

Many critics were disgusted that D’banj, who’s on Jonathan’s payroll, would dare appoint himself to represent the Nigerian youth.

By granting an interview to the likes of D’banj, Jonathan has ignored the politically aware coalition that formed “What About Us?”—a collection of talented, imaginative, articulate, highly educated and globally acclaimed Nigerian youth.

“Why would this man ignore the youth-led initiative for a real debate and give a comical interview to a hireling like D’banj?” asked a disappointed youth. “Is President Jonathan so scared that he won’t take questions from Chimamanda Adichie?” asked another.

D'Banj’s performance was so bad that he came out looking like a brainless political pawn, too grateful to sit across from a candidate who appears too timid and too unsure of himself to submit to any real debate.

Jonathan and the PDP may be misjudging the youth who are determined to put an end to the era of mediocrity and criminal showmanship that has dragged their nation backward for several decades.
 
For D’banj it was a regrettable moment, marking his career as an anti-youth crusader.

Adding to D’Banj’s miscalculation is the discovery that the Jonathan campaign is a sponsor of the Koko Concert scheduled to be held on the 25th of March, the same day as the Adichie-anchored youth debate. Many young people have reacted furiously to the news.

While this move might have been packaged by the Jonathan campaign as an ostensible outreach to the youth community, it came off as a huge gaffe, leaving the President looking disconnected from the core concerns of young people—and a man too afraid to speak to the youth without a script.

As for D’banj, the question is whether he’s going to ever regain respect within the Nigerian youth community. One former fan tweeted: "See d cheap propaganda of Dbanj n GEJ. I see y naija youths cant be trusted. Dbanj na west."

The entertainer’s huge public relations misstep might not matter to him, though; he’s making trips to the bank to lodge his lucre!

But one thing is certain, Nigerian youths don’t seem in any mood to be manipulated by politicians who hold them and their issues in contempt—or by their hirelings, whatever seductive songs they may sing!

Victor Uwaifo has a string of firsts as taut and sound as those on his guitar. Among others, he is the first to break the mould of Nigerian bandleaders being either trumpeters or horns-men; Nigeria’s first true master guitarist and one of the best in world contemporary popular music. He is also the first to give a leading role for the guitar in Nigerian popular music; the first Nigerian musician to play a double-necked guitar; the first to have his record on the BBC Home Service chart-in 1966 (that hit went on to become the first Gold disc in Africa and, remains the only Gold disc in West Africa, because it was the only 45 rpm record Gold Disc before the format was phased out) and the first-ever Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Tourism in Edo State.

It’s no wonder then that Uwaifo exhibits a streak of confidence in his art as he declares candidly and uncompromisingly, “I am not just a master guitarist; I am an institution as an instrumentalist, mostly on the guitar and flute and, basically in all spheres of life.” He might not be modest, but he has risen from being a guitar boy into a guitar maestro, genius and national musical icon.

Guitar Boy

For nearly five decades Uwaifo has continued a creative love affair with the guitar that has flourished. He has produced an exhaustive and varied catalogue of world famous contemporary popular music as well as structural innovations to the musical instrument.

Uwaifo recalls that he did “manual labour” to earn money to buy his first guitar in the 1960s. A decade later, he produced and released a tune, ‘Guitar Boy’, which became one of his greatest hits and national bestseller of the 1960s. Uwaifo had every right to tag himself the Guitar Boy back then. He is still an active instrumentalist and continues a famous musical and artistic life! His influence on guitarists in other genres of Nigerian popular music is enormous. “I inspired Sunny Ade and other juju music guitarists to stand up and play as against sitting down to play the guitar,” Uwaifo asserts.

He developed into a confident innovative master guitarist and showman. His repertoire of choreographed stunts include a stylish sequence of aerobatic somersaulting, complex body gyrations, dancing, doing the splits, playing behind his back and even with his teeth. “I bite my guitar,” he declares with relish. He attributes his physical fitness and ability to perform these tasking stunts to body-building, which he started as a secondary school student at St. Gregory’s College, Lagos. At school then he established a high jump record of 6 feet 6 inches that still stands.

Victor Uwaifo’s trademark as a guitarist include a sustained fluency in extended solos; multiple ripples of melodic sounds and harmony interlaced with percussive chords. Marvelous multi-layered guitar solos distinguish two of his greatest hits, ‘Joromi’ and ‘Guitar Boy’.

His ingenuity with the guitar has also inspired him to design different types and shapes of the instrument. Unique to these Uwaifo wonder guitars is a combination guitar and keyboard he named Joromi.

The Guitar Boy of yesteryears is now a 70-year old Hon. Sir, Dr Victor Efosa Uwaifo JP MON. After his secondary school education, he won a scholarship to the Yaba College of Technology where he obtained a National Diploma with Distinction in Graphics. He obtained a first class honours degree in Fine and Applied Arts from the University of Benin in 1995 and went on to earn a Doctorate degree. Currently, he is Chairman of Joromi Organisation, Chairman/Director of Joromi TV (JTV) and Recording Studio. and the Victor Uwaifo Art Gallery in Benin City.

Uwaifo became a Nigerian popular music icon and international superstar in the 1960s. A many-faceted pioneer, he has contributed his own distinct musical flavour to the genre of Nigerian popular music called Highlife. His megahit ‘Joromi’, that made the BBC chart in 1966, propelled him to monumental and permanent fame. It became Africa’s first Gold disc and, over the years, Uwaifo accumulated 12 other Gold discs.

‘Joromi’, however, remains special. Its lyrics and theme, like the bulk of Uwaifo’s music, is deeply rooted in his native Benin culture. “Everything about my sound and rhythm is Benin,” he explains. “Ekasa is a rattle you tie around your ankle when you dance. The sound creates the Ekasa rhythm, which is similar to the sound of a locomotive engine. The only time they dance Ekasa in Benin is during the crowning of a new Oba (King). Some of my songs are also traceable to certain Obas and their eras. It is a way of documenting history through music.” The story of Joromi is an intriguing Benin fable. According to Uwaifo, “Joromi in Benin mythology was a wrestler, a world champion who after conquering the whole world decided to go to hell and fight the Devil with seven heads.” It is no wonder that Uwaifo named his first studio in Benin, opened in 1978, Joromi.

His background as a trained artist contributed to his creative process as a musician. “Art has form, music has form,” he explains, adding: “Art has colours and the colours have relativity with sound. Sound and colours are in harmony. If you take the harmony one by one, you have do re mi fa so la ti do…do, you represent with black, re-red, mi-blue, fa-green, so-neutral/white (which is no colour), la-yellow, ti-violet, do-you go back to the same octave. Then you can mix several colours to begin to have other families of colours. These are just the basic things. Music, art, writing, creativity, are all the same thing. They are all interwoven, co-cyclic and they work in motion and action. Once you can see art on a deep level, you can also see music.

Music has form and structure just like in architecture. You cannot put certain sounds in wrong places. Even if you are doing abstract art, the deliberate distortions must make sense.” What are the flavours of his unique sound and rhythms? “To explain the different forms of my music, I gave them different names. They have different time signatures and interpretation. Their rendition is also different. That’s why I identified them as Akwette, Sasakosa, Mutaba, Ekasa, Titibiti, and so on.” What about his approach to instrumentation? “I inter-marry African instruments, Benin instruments, percussion and other instruments with contemporary musical instruments to make African sounds. And I still retain the authenticity of the African sounds. That is the beauty of it.” How does Uwaifo classify his music? “Some of my music is Highlife. All other music whether the Ekasa or Titibiti and, all other ones put together from the East and West of Nigeria are under the same umbrella of Highlife. Highlife is the music of Nigeria and West Africa. The sounds may differ but all these various sounds put together come under Highlife!”

“The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said on Thursday that the naira was overvalued and that more exchange rate flexibility would be needed to prevent the Central Bank of Nigeria from running down the foreign currency reserves to fix the rate. The Fund said in Washington DC, USA that the CBN might need to increase benchmark interest rates further and weaken its currency to curb inflation, following the increase in public spending”.

The above is an excerpt from a news report titled “Naira is Overvalued, IMF Tells CBN” on page 19 of the Punch Newspaper of Friday, 18/2/2011. My reaction to above report was a spontaneous exclamation that “we are done for!”, as it was clear that rising and increasing consumer prices and higher interest rates consequent upon adoption of IMF’s recommendation will further deepen poverty in Nigeria!There is no doubt about the considerable influence of IMF support and supervision agencies on the operations of our economy, particularly our monetary framework and policies! Indeed, the Fund showed the extent of its commitment to pressing adoption of its prescriptions, when the emoluments of one of its officials, on secondment as our Finance Minister were underwritten in dollars in the recent past.

The result of that enterprise, of course, was our gleeful separation from about $20bn of our reserves, in what was affectionately termed as ‘debt forgiveness’! Meanwhile, rising unemployment, unbridled inflation and reduced industrial capacity with lending rates above 20% prevailed against the realistic expectation of Nigerians, for the goodwill of having our economy managed by IMF technocrats! We were obviously oblivious to the age-old reference to loyalty of the piper to his benefactor when we accepted the ‘imposition’!Nigerians will recall that the main cause of our economic downturn and increasing abject poverty of the masses can be traced to IMF-sponsored Structural Adjustment Program (SAP), to which then President Babangida acceded.

The major thrust of SAP was the devaluation of the naira. IMF held that naira was grossly overvalued, in spite of bourgeoning industrial landscape, increasing job opportunities, and wages and salaries commanding significant purchasing power. The resultant grossly devalued naira quickly induced brain drain, as experienced lecturers, professors, doctors, nurses, engineers and scientists fled to greener pastures, where, in spite of the regret of social dislocation, they were assured of incomes that could maintain their dignity and self-worth. Soon after the exodus, the quality of education at all levels dropped remarkably; today, we are still nowhere near recovery. Rapid naira devaluation sounded the death knell for otherwise prospering commercial and industrial conurbations in the country, as production costs skyrocketed, and cash flow challenges could not be favourably resolved with lending rates above 20%!The unanticipated spiraling cost of critical imports of parts and equipment also dealt injurious blows on the state of social infrastructure as hospitals, power stations, steel complexes and diverse consumer industries were destabilized.

The net product became a ghostly industrial landscape, and hundreds of thousands of Nigerians lost their jobs. The continuous, officially sanctioned naira devaluation to its present rate of N152=$1 has finally reduced incomes of over 50% of Nigerians to below United Nation’s poverty benchmark of $2 per day; a grim reality, which has led thousands of young desperate Nigerians to traverse inhospitable deserts and stormy seas in search of a better life. Some critics have likened the migration to the slave trade era, but the difference this time is that, the slaves willingly find their ways to the ‘camps’ either by hook or crook! The above gives a fair picture of the socially destructive impact of SAP with naira devaluation as its arrowhead. My concern, therefore, at the present IMF call for further naira devaluation, is the sad recognition of the prospect of aggravated poverty, which will inevitably be its product in the light of our historical antecedent.

However, some observers may consider such perspective as alarmist and note that the IMF recommendation is without binding force! Even if there is no overt imposition, the reality is that, IMF has generally had its way in ‘third world’ countries, and our national experiences confirm same. Other analysts may conclude that the IMF report is actually notice of a ‘done deal’ and sooner than later, naira will be devalued by more than 10%; in other words, naira may exchange for dollar at over N175=$1! Curiously, one of the reasons for IMF’s recommendation for naira devaluation was to halt capital flight or forestall ‘one-way bets in foreign exchange market’ according to IMF parlance! But regrettably, this overt recommendation for a devalued naira will only spur the already buoyant market for dollar and consequently precipitate the Fund’s prediction of capital flight, which may then make naira devaluation subsequently inevitable! This may appear to some as a case of working to the answer, but unfortunately, such circuitous exchange rate masterminding will work against our economic recovery and do much damage to the demand base of our economy as all income values, particularly those of the poor, whittle under the plague of rising prices! A lower valued naira will make it very difficult if not impossible to remove fuel subsidy and instead earn revenue from a fuel sales tax as in other countries, like the US and UK with crude oil endowments. In place of revenue from a sales tax, we will continue to pay more than the current value of over N500bn as fuel subsidies every year.

Yes, the bloated quantum naira sums consequent on devaluation will, no doubt, nominally increase monthly revenue allocations to the three tiers of government, but these bigger naira allocations will command less purchasing value and still present insurmountable challenges for best practice monetary policy management as CBN’s albatross of ever-present scourge of ‘too much cash or excess liquidity’ will become exacerbated and require increasing public borrowings to remove such excess cash from the market to dampen inflationary spiral. The adoption of such a liquidity control strategy accounts for a large chunk of over N500bn currently paid as interest and service charges for moneys borrowed by CBN in its failed efforts to bring about single digit inflationary rate over the years! To be fair, IMF also recognizes the inflationary threat caused by what it describes as the “…pro-cyclical fiscal stance and an accommodative monetary policy” of the government and thus quickly recommended an antidote of ‘monetary tightening’ policies; in lay man’s language, this means that current lending rates of 20 – 22% should be induced to rise way above these already investment prohibitive rates, so as to halt the prospect of further inflation! The reality, of course, is that much higher cost of funds coupled with higher industrial replacement costs as a result of naira devaluation will certainly restrain any progress to industrial consolidation or expansion and worsen an already depressed labour market!It should become obvious from the above that there is no window of victory in any sector of Nigeria’s economic and social endeavour that IMF’s recommendations for a lower valued naira and higher cost of borrowing can possibly deliver! It is curious that in spite of its intimidating credentials as the custodian of best Central Banking practices, the IMF fails to see the huge disconnect in the structure of our money market, where, in spite of a CBN benchmark rate of about 6%, deposits attract less than 4% concurrently with lending rates of over 20%! I am baffled that the Fund’s experts do not see anything wrong in the present monetary framework where CBN pays huge naira allocations into the bank accounts of the three tiers of government one day only to return within a few days to borrow much of these moneys back at an average cost of about 10%.Meanwhile, the IMF recognizes that such high interest charges for sovereign debts are inappropriate and yet it makes no recommendations to remedy this anomaly, which saps hundreds of billions of naira every year from government revenue with adverse impact on the amount available for infrastructural enhancement! This is a very high cost to pay for the joy of removing presumed ‘excess cash’ from the system for warehousing in CBN vaults and accounting records in failed attempts to subdue the rage of inflation!The paradox, of course, is that this liquidity mop up and monetary tightening occurs side by side with CBN’s acknowledgement that banks are cash-strapped and have to be pampered with ample cash injections to heal their wounds, before they can perform their role as the strong backbone of a resilient and prosperous economy. We have doggedly and faithfully followed this cycle in spite of glaring evidence of its failure to jumpstart the economy and the obvious deepening poverty over the years.

Whether or not the IMF can be excused for not recognising these glaring contradictions in the operation of Nigeria’s monetary policy is another matter, but the Fund’s comment in the Bloomberg report under reference that “Nigeria has weathered the global economic recession and its own domestic banking crisis reasonably well” may suggest either mischief or innocent ignorance of the Nigerian economy.Objective analysts will insist that Nigeria’s economy has remained in the doldrums since the mid 1980s, during which period, unemployment has continued to soar unabated, such that unemployment rates always significantly exceeded the rate in those countries, which were victims and villains of the global recession! The same can be said for the rate of inflation and the level of interest rates!

If truth must be told, global recession was not the primary causative factor for the economic wilderness which Nigeria finds itself!We have ceaselessly argued in this column that the real poison in the matrix of fiscal and monetary policy management in Nigeria is CBN’s substitution of bloated naira sums for dollar component of monthly distributable revenue! It is inexplicable that IMF does not recognize this pungent reality, and the Fund’s recommendation for an even “greater exchange rate flexibility to forestall the depletion of our foreign reserves” is even more perplexing! How much more liberal can you get after the unforced error of CBN’s monthly allocations of billions of otherwise scarce dollar reserves directly to Bureau de Change for onward sales to looters of the treasury, sponsors of capital flight and smugglers of contraband goods? It is baffling that the IMF fails to see anything wrong in this practice, or indeed, to identify such dollar allocations as a major contributor to depletion of our foreign reserves.

Questions can be raised on whether or not IMF’s unsolicited advices are truly altruistic or are discrete and convoluted strategies to separate us from our wealth with the same inconsequential rewards of a poorly negotiated partnership agreement similar to the slave trade era. Early life
Onweagba grew up in the suburbs of Lagos, Nigeria with her two brothers and sisters. She is the daughter of a civil servant father and mother who was a nurse.[2] When Onweagba was 16 years old, she won the "Face Of Africa" contest.[2]

Elite Model Management awarded Onweagba a three-year modeling contract.

Alhaji Abdulahi Adamu Usman is a pillar in the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), being one of the financiers of the party. He used to be a close associate and die-hard supporter of the presidential candidate of the party, General Mohammadu Buhari (retd). That was then. Today, with the outcome of the primary elections of the party some which ended in controversies, Usman popularly called Dan China said the former Head of State was not the Mr. Integrity that Nigerians had known.

After winning the Bauchi State governorship primary election of the CPC, and his victory given to the person who came third, Dan China concluded that Nigerians have all along been overrating Buhari because “a man of integrity will not substitute a winner with a loser.” He spoke with Daily Sun in Abuja. I don’t know what went wrong. What I was thinking was that the leadership of CPC is a guaranteed leadership of General Muhammadu Buhari, which makes me to feel that there should be no cheating in CPC but I have found myself as a victim.

Results of the primaries
The results? I have them, they are very clear and they were publicised all over. Up till today, nobody has told me anything about it and I just keep quiet. I was thinking that Buhari as a truthful person can do something about it. From the stories I am hearing and from what I have been reading on the pages of newspapers, the victory of the primaries has been given to the person in the third position instead of me. This is against democracy, it is against the law. How do we achieve a free and fair election in this country with this kind of development? INEC also forbids this. The people’s choice must prevail and not just for some cabal either in CPC or anywhere else to pick anybody. It is the same party (CPC) that does not want me even after I have been declared winner of the primaries. The reasons for this I do not know. I went through the screening committee in Bauchi before the primaries without any problem.

What do you want the party to do now?
The party should understand that the person who is aspiring for the presidential position that is, Buhari, is killing the party. What is happening is that the people who are serious in supporting the party and supporting activities that will move the party and nation forward are being witch hunted by Buhari, and he is the chairman of the Board of Trustees (BOT). He supposed not to have allowed this to happen. If some members of a cabal in the party are given him wrong advice, he should not yield to it. He is supposed to be a man of his words and not to be allowed by some people in the party to manipulate him. I have the papers which he (Buhari) signed approving the election results but later confusion came into the issue which as a leader he should be up to the task. I am disappointed in him and I am still in shock.

What are the steps you are taking to claim your right?
I am still looking at what Buhari will do since he is claiming that he is a straight forward person. As someone who has been tested and trusted before, if now he is changing that calls for concern. May be his age is telling on him or he has brought some people into CPC that are bent on destroying the party. I do not know what is happening. Definitely they will go on destroying his character and credibility. I have seen nowhere he can go to and campaign now, almost in all the states he has popularity has been destroyed by him. You cannot blame the people that committed all these you blame the leader. How can I be substituted by another person who was at the third position meanwhile I won the primaries? It is fraud and it is uncalled for. I will not allow it.

Implication for CPC
You can see what is happening in Kano, Bauchi, Kastina and Kebbi states. Those are the strong states the party should not toy with but the reverse is the case. These areas are the major roots that have been destroyed now. CPC is losing credibility and urgent steps must be taken.

Legal option
I did not join politics on my own. I was called to join politics by my classmates, friends, well wishers and the people of Bauchi State. I cannot determine what to do because they are attacking me left and right, up and down everyday. I do not what decision they may come up with.

Do you sense any conspiracy?
I doubt much because I am a very known person not only in my state but in Nigeria. If anybody is deceiving himself thinking that Abudulahi Adamu is of only Bauchi State he is deceiving himself. I am known in the South, West, Meddle Belt and in the North, nobody can contest that because I have made it. I am a qualified mining engineer. In fact, in West Africa I can say for now nobody has the qualities, the potentials that I have. We are only five in West Africa when I graduated. I only watch and laugh those thinking that I am not educated. I do not care about them. I am a managing director of about five successful companies. I have never taken loan from anybody personally. I have never taken credit from any bank in Nigeria.

I have never borrowed money internationally, I do not owe anybody now. I did not collect any money from anybody. I started these companies personally through hard work. So, how can you explain or say that such a successful person who deals with labourers, expatriates cannot rule Nigeria let alone a small state like Bauchi? What is wrong with our people? I have worked in the Igbo land without any problem, and I am very popular there. I have worked in South West without problems, many can attest to that. I have maintained relative peace with people over there with my popularity. I have worked with the ex-militants in the Niger Delta region without any problem and somebody is saying that I cannot manage a small state like Bauchi. Why don’t they think that I can even rule Nigeria with my potentials? This is a slap and an embarrassment to my person.

CPC’s fortunes and Buhari’s presidential ambition
The truth of it is whether he likes it or not there is a saying that a Good Friday would have been determined by Wednesday. When the Wednesday is not good how do you think that the Friday will be good? Buhari was in the presidential race in 2003 and 2007, all those periods he was going to the tribunal after each election, why was he going to court then? Is it not to challenge the authenticity of the election that there was fraud perpetrated by some people? Now he is in charge in CPC and he is allowing people to be duped in many states where primaries were held, why? My election was free and fair. The CPC gubernatorial primaries were conducted on January 12, 2011 in Bauchi State.

Out of the three contestants, I, Abdullahi Adamu Usman emerged winner with over 336, 924 votes. The person following me, Nuhu Gidado had 109, 987, while the third person, Yusuf Tuggar had 93, 980 votes. After announcing the result it was signed by all the necessary authorities that were involved to affirm that the results were authentic. Few days later when the names were submitted to INEC the person who came third was the one whose name was submitted to the commission thereby denying me as the authentic winner of the primary. I have the papers with me for confirmation. This is fraud. Nobody assisted me with any money when I decided to join politics. If anybody claims that he or she assisted me financially the person should please come out publicly and confront me. Somebody who failed in the primaries, how will he win in the major election? He is the third person not even the second. He was just smuggled in and this I will not allow to happen.

Imposition of candidates
What they are saying is wrong. They have betrayed their rules and regulations because they are not following the constitution of CPC. The primaries were monitored by INEC and the results clearly written out.
 I started politics independently without a party. Later, I went to the CPC to ask if they can take me as a candidate and the party leadership told me to look for support. I was never told that they will hand pick candidates. INEC, State Security Service (SSS), Commissioner of Police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence, (NSCDC) supervised this election and they have copies of the results. It was a hitch free and fair election. If the party leadership had informed me that they would pick candidates by themselves, I would have stood as independent candidate. Initially, when my posters were printed, it was without party logo. I would have stood as an independent candidate because INEC gave right to anybody who has the power to pay for independent ticket. If I had done that I would not be arguing with people now.

They have used me and dumped me. If I had known that it would turn out this way I have paid as independent candidate for the election. The party has cheated me. I have been creating job opportunities all over Nigeria. I do not discriminate when I want to help anybody.

Have you met Buhari one on one to find a solution to this problem?
I have met Buhari and the party. I have asked him. He did not give me a reasonable answer. What I want now is that I want to be independent if INEC will give me that opportunity. I want to pay that N100 million and run as an independent candidate. I will like to petition INEC and plead to disassociate myself from the cabal in the party. I am no more interested in any other party. Since Buhari has failed me, I have no more confidence in him and in any other person. Buhari was only person who ruled and I have confidence in. But he (Buhari) has betrayed that confidence and is unfortunate.

Have you been overrating Buhari?
I do not know what is wrong with Buhari, Is it old age? Or what? How can someone with a personality like him allow himself to be pushed around by some cabals in the party? People that have credibility in Nigeria and don’t think I would forget about being governor of Bauchi State. I have made a great mistake by not contesting with Buhari. If I knew this is what would happen, I would have challenged him as a presidential aspirant. I thought I should run for the governorship of Bauchi State to correct the failure of Governor Isa Yuguda.

Uchendu, wife and babies

He was convinced that the parcel he picked was well loaded and among the best and, therefore, had no need to worry about.

But wishes, they say, are not horses. For 16 tortuous years, Uchedu lived with her wife, Judith, but without a single child to show for the marriage. Chief Uchendu did his traditional marriage on June 6, 1992 and church wedding on November 28 of the same year.

As the problem lingers, Uchendu who hails from Ibeme Ugiri in Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State set out in search for a solution.

This took the husband and wife from one place to another; from one medical prescription to another, yet there was no headway.

In a chat with Daily Sun, Uchendu said: “I did everything humanly possible for 16 years to see if I could get a child, but there was no way. I spent more than N10 million in the search for just a child, in fact, all the money I made within that period was all spent, and still there was no solution.”

But one thing that the couple had going for them was their absolute faith in what God can do.

“After sometime, we took a decision that we would not go to any where again in search of a child; if God would not give us one, we will accept His wish after all we’ve tried as human beings. After that decision, we stopped all medications towards this direction and hoped wholly on God”, Uchendu said.

Uchendu, a Christian of the Catholic fold, decided to put his faith in God in practice as he went into knighthood and was conferred with the Knight of Saint John International (KSJ).

Two spectacular things happened during the period that preceded his initiation into knighthood in September 2007.

First, his wife who although may have disagreed with him on some issues, but definitely not on the issue of child bearing, vehemently opposed his idea of going into knighthood.

Her reason, according to Uchendu, was that, “when one is initiated into knighthood, he would not marry two wives. She was afraid my family would accuse her of luring me into knighthood in order to stop me from marrying another woman who would bear me children. I told her to relax because all the while, she never knew there was no pressure from my family to marry another woman because we are a Christian family”.

The second and more spectacular thing which happened within the period was that as Uchendu was attending programmes preparatory to his knighthood initiation, his wife became pregnant and they never knew.

His words: “As I was attending programmes preceding my initiation into the knighthood, I never knew my wife had taken in. When it became evident, I asked her to go for scanning tests and the results showed he had only one child in her womb and we prepared for her delivery based on the result of the scanning.

“But God in His infinite way of doing things, my wife in February 2008, delivered twins (a boy and a girl). One came out at exactly 5.00p.m. on that fateful day and the second followed 30 minutes later,” he said.

As the twins, Prince Udochukwu and Princeness Adaeze were delivered, Uchendu said that at first he was confused, but later felt relieved.

He said everything around him changed as his house on School Road, Aba became a tourist site of sorts. People from far and near came to see for themselves if actually his wife given birth. Even some American doctors who attended to them in Nigeria when they were in search of the fruit of the womb, joined in the ecstasy of that moment. They went further to send gift items from America for the upkeep of the kids.

In the 16 years of waiting, wherever the couple went for medical tests, they were always said to be okay. But this never stopped people from cajoling them until it got to the point where they were in turn praised..

“Although within the 16 years of waiting, people said all sorts of things against us, but we were not bothered because we knew that one day, God will answer our prayers. After sometime, those who were cajoling and calling us all sorts of names, then turned around to praise and call us the best couple around,” he said.

Recently, the twins clocked two years and their father who had at their delivery presented a cow in fulfillment of the vow he made to God, treated them to a lavish birthday ceremony.

But like Oliver Twist, Chief Uchendu who asked for just a child, but God gave him two at once, is asking for more children, even as he said “at the same time, I will be contented with the twins if that’s all God has for me.”

Fola Adeola , Ex-MD,GTBank Plc

Barring any last minute changes, Mr. Afolabi Tajudeen Adeola, former Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc,  former chairman of the National Pension Commission (Pencom), and former member on the (Tony) Blair Commission on Africa, may have been named the running mate of the fledgling candidacy of the anti-corruption czar, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

Ribadu is the presidential candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). If this happens, it would follow on the heels of the Chief MKO

Abiola-Alhaji Babagana Kingibe Muslim-Muslim ticket, which was widely accepted by Nigerians across regional and ethnic lines in the annulled 1993 presidential election.

Analysts believe it may work again because both Ribadu and Adeola are not known to be religious champions, practising their faith privately and quietly. They are equally known to work across religious and tribal lines.

Party sources confirmed that discussions and consultations are still on-going on the choice of Adeola, and it is expected that matters relating to the pairing of duo will be concluded later today in the evening to beat the INEC deadline tomorrow (February 21) for the substitution of presidential candidates and their running mates.

When contacted last night, Adeola confirmed that he had been approached by the leadership of the ACN but that they were yet to conclude discussions.

The former banker, who likened the decision to a marriage between two people, also admitted that issues relating to the development must be concluded today.

“By the grace of God, everything will be resolved by this time tomorrow (today, Sunday).”

Adeola added that all related issues have to be carefully looked into before a final decision is taken. He said the offer is not what he is taking lightly.

Also confirming the story, one of the ACN governors said the choice of Adeola as Ribadu’s running mate is one of the intelligent decisions the party has taken at this time of the year.

He described Adeola as a detailed person who would naturally pair with a Ribadu, an administrative hand.

The governor said there is the need for a running mate, who would take up all the detailed assignments that the presidential job demands, especially in the quest for a better Nigeria.

He said the Ribadu-Adeola ticket would go down in history as one of the best ever produced in the country by any political party, adding, “We are in this to win and not to consider what some class of people would think about a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

“Even the political class is waiting to break away from the old order. They don’t just know how to go about it.”

The governor, who sounded excited about the development said Adeola is a respectable young man who has paid his dues in the development, of the country.

As co-founder and ex-managing director of GTBank, he said Adeola walked away when the ovation was loudest. He posited that Adeola had also handled many sensitive and vital assignments in the country and beyond...

“He has what it takes to rebuild this country. This country needs rebuilding and not rebranding like the PDP is doing. Nigeria needs root and branch reformation.

“So, we can’t have people who are part of the problem as part of the solution. It would not work. That is the difference between the PDP candidate who is though a nice guy, but is clueless,” he said.
