It was a scene. Everyone was stunned; the unexpected had happened.

As the man and his bride were just about to be joined, at the Ikorodu Registry, his legally married wife stepped in with her lawyer and spoilt the show.

According to Toyin Ajao, who witnessed what happened in late January, Patience Balogun [not her real name] got a phone call from an anonymous caller who claimed that she [Mrs Balogun] had helped her in the past. The faceless caller told Patience that her husband, who had left the house that night on pretext of going to see somebody, was planning to get married to another woman the next day. The caller also gave details of location and time.

After this life shaking call, Mrs Balogun quickly contacted her mother and other family members who advised her to contact a lawyer, with whom she mapped out a strategy of handling the situation.

The action

While the strategy to foil the wedding plans is ongoing, Mr Balogun with his new bride were at the door of the court, waiting to be called in by the judge when his phone rang. It was Mrs. Balogun, his wife. They spoke for a while, and then he signed off with the usual ,“I love you and will see you soon.” Unknowingly to him, Mrs Balogun was downstairs in the compound, with their two daughters, her lawyer, her mother, and a few friends and family, watching him all the while. Shortly after, the ‘couple-to-be’ were called in, but Mrs Balogun and her crew remained outside, waiting for the right moment.

Just as the magistrate was about to pronounce Mr. Balogun and his bride, husband and wife, the lawyer walked in, armed with the first wedding certificate and asked the magistrate to stop the wedding. Mrs. Balogun and the others followed.

After looking at the wedding certificate, the magistrate stopped the wedding with the whole courtroom in disarray. Mrs Balogun, who was visibly furious, walked up to her dazed husband and gave him multiple slaps until he was moved to where she could not reach him. To the amazement of some on-lookers, she made no advances at the disappointed bride, who was quickly taken away from the scene in a car.

“There were lots of people who gave their confused, traditionally tainted and reasonable opinions about the shocking issue. Many felt Mrs. Balogun should have allowed the husband to wed the ‘other woman’ and then sue him for bigamy. Some felt she should have organised for people to beat the hell out of the husband” said Ms. Ajao, a women’s right and gender activist, who was at the magistrate to secure the release of her female friend from prison.

“I really commended the lady for what she did. So many women will not be brave enough to come to the court and stop the wedding, so they will allow their rights to be trampled upon. Some will say he is the man so what can I do. So because he is the man, the woman should just take rubbish. In my opinion, she would have let them get married then sue for bigamy. If my husband does that, I will divorce him and I will sue him for bigamy.”

General Awareness

According to Kate Ibeanusi, the programme officer, at Project Alert, a non-governmental organisation that is focused on protecting women rights said women in Lagos are generally getting more aware of their rights and more willing to enforce them. “I can say women are getting more aware of their rights. Today we have more women who are willing to talk about abuses they face in their marriages and they come to report. But then, some will start up the process, after sometime you won’t see them again and when you call them, they will say, ‘‘actually what happened is that he came and begged me. I think he has changed.’ And we ask them are you sure he has changed? What happens a lot of time is that some months later the same women will come back to us to talk about spousal abuse,” she said.

“The problem really is that a lot of men still have the mentality that women are just pieces of furniture; when you are tired of them you dump them somewhere and go for another one. Generally, we do not intervene in marriages without the consent of the couple. If a woman reports to us, we will call the husband to get his own side of the story then we talk to both of them together, then we will advise them on what to do. We have seen cases where after talking they conclude that they can no longer live together. They will decide on divorce. In cases where there is threat to life, we advise the women to leave the house.” In accordance with African culture, families usually play vital roles in troubled marriages.

Family meetings are usually convened to settle such matters when they arise. However, Ms. Ibeanusi said families are often not able to properly resolve issues of abuse in marriages. “Are families really playing roles well? Or are they busy taking sides? I have a brother. If she has a problem with his wife, it is easy for me to side my brother against his wife and so also her family will take sides with her. So at the end the day, all they will be doing is shifting blames” she said.

According Ben Ode, a lawyer with Project Alert, a man marrying another woman when he is still legally married, is bigamy, and it is a criminal offence with seven years imprisonment as punishment. He though it also applies to church and traditional marriages, the major setback is that it is difficult to prove in court.

When NEXT visited Mrs. Balogun about two weeks after her brave act, she said she has settled with her husband and was no longer willing to talk to the press.

looks like our Nigerian Rappers are very well behaved citizens in a Country of lawlessness go figure who was last in jail ? MI , Ikechukwu ? ? ?
Rapper Ja Rule is headed to prison for two years after pleading guilty Monday to driving with a loaded gun after a 2007 concert.

"This isn't a good day, fellas," the one-time Grammy nominee said grimly as he left Manhattan Supreme Court.

The plea to attempted weapon possession in the second degree, a violent felony, came just before his trial was scheduled to start.

Ja Rule, 34, whose real name is Jeffrey Atkins, was busted with a loaded .40-caliber Taurus pistol inside his Maybach as he and two pals left the Beacon Theater on the upper West Side following a Lil Wayne & Friends concert in July 2007.

Lil Wayne, real name Dwayne Carter, was also arrested for gun possession that night. He took the same plea as Ja Rule but received only one year in jail. He was released from Rikers recently after an eight-month stint.

Ja Rule, wearing jeans and a black sweater, spoke in a low voice as he answered the judge's questions. He will get a similar prison time to the one accepted by Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress, who shot himself in the leg inside a night club.

Ja Rule faced 3 1/2 to 15 years in prison had he been convicted for the top charge in trial.

Ja Rule's road manager, Dennis Cherry, is expected to cop a no-jail plea by the end of the month, a source said. The other man who was arrested in the rapper's car, driver Mohamed Gamal, has died of cancer.

The Queens-born rapper, whose last album came out in 2005, is due back in court Feb. 9 to schedule a sentencing date. Justice Richard Carruthers instructed him to make his next court appearance and stay out of trouble until he's sent Upstate for two years to be followed by a year and a half of post-release supervision.

"If you fulfill all of these conditions, I will sentence you as I have indicated," the judge told him.

Ibori’s wife gets five-year jail term

iboriwife.jpgThe wife of the former Governor of Delta State, Theresa Ibori, has been sentenced to jail for five years by a London jury after she was found guilty on a two count-charge of money laundering.

Found guilty with Mr Ibori’s attorney, Bhadresh Gohil, who was on trial with Theresa. Mr Gohil was found guilty on a similar charge and was remanded in police custody.

He will be sentenced after the conclusion of another trial involving the laundering of proceeds of V-Mobile shares by James Ibori, Henry Imashekka, David Edevbie and former Akwa Ibom governor, Victor Attah. The trial will commence next Monday.

The recent anti-corruption campaign on the Ibori’s has also seen the conviction of the former governor’s sister Christine Ibori-Ibie; and mistress, Udoamaka Okoronkwo-Onuigbo in a previous trial for helping him move an estimated £70 million worth of looted funds through several London banks. The two women are currently serving five-year jail terms each in a London prison.

Mr Ibori is currently detained in the United Arab Emirates where the Dubai court of First Instance ruled in October that he should be extradited to the United Kingdom to face charges on corruption, official theft and money laundering saying he has “a case to answer in the UK.” But he is appealing the judgement at the Emirate’s Supreme Court where he is reported to have sought political asylum.

Mr Ibori was arrested in the Emirate by the International Police (INTERPOL) in May after he was declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly mismanaging N528 million shares of Delta State in Oceanic Bank a month before his arrest in the UAE after evading arrest in Nigeria. A warrant of arrest was also issued on him by the UK Metropolitan Police for money laundering......

Zimbabwe’s representative in the Big Brother All Stars reality television show, Photo:Munyaradzi Chidzonga on Wednesday met President Robert Mugabe and was feted with $300 000 compensatory ‘prize money.’

This means that Munya got more than the winner of the competition, Uti from Nigeria who pocketed $200 000 for winning the contest sponsored by Multi Choice.

Zimbabweans felt Munya was robbed after surviving eviction nine times when he was nominated and political heavyweights from President Mugabe’s Zanu PF party jumped at the opportunity to exploit to their favour.

The move was initiated by business mogul Phillip Chiyangwa, a nephew of the president and David Chapfika who initiated a fundraising campaign.

After meeting the president, Munya said: “That was something I wanted to do since I was very young. They say when you are young you are given the power of dreams.

“You live that dream until a certain time it is realised. I have always told young people around that we are a product of a group of men’s dreams and we have been given a platform.

“And I can proudly stand on that platform and say a black man is more powerful in Zimbabwe than anywhere else in the world.

“I have been given the blessing of travelling and seeing, not all of it, but much of the world and this is the best place. It is thanks to men like you Your Excellency.”

During the course of Big Brother, Munya said he wanted to meet President Mugabe and usually went around the house with the Zimbabwean flag draped over his shoulders.

President Mugabe said Munya was a people’s hero and the true winner of the Big Brother All Stars reality television show.

He hailed Munya’s performance in the “grueling” and “rough contest”.

“This is quite a joyous moment not just for Munya, not just for me, but to all of us in the country… you have done well for the country,” he said..

“And you went through it all. I didn’t think you would survive because you looked so young, perhaps the youngest of them all.

“The most handsome of them all… We were very proud of you and of your performance..

“When it came to the end, the top decision, the judges had to make sure that one (person) had to win. It was Nigeria versus Zimbabwe and Nigeria is a very big country so you deferred to Nigeria.

“But both of you won and from our point of view, for us, you were the winner. You made us proud. I want to say congratulations to you and the young Zimbabweans represented by you.”

The 24- year old Munya touched down at the Harare International Airport around midday and was driven straight to the State house.

According to host of BBA IK, this was the closest ever finale with the winner securing the votes from eight countries and the runner up from seven.

Uti initially participated in the third season of Big Brother Africa and was one of the housemates from previous seasons chosen to enter the Big Brother All Stars house.

A photographer for the Daily Mail got an amazing picture at the Ryder Cup of Tiger Woods flubbing a shot headed directly at the camera. He didn't duck and Tiger's golf ball actually hit the lens — but not before the image was captured midflight. The photo has been seen around the world.

But that's not what's captivating the Web. It's the amazingly unique look of the fan standing just to the right of Tiger's shoulder, chomping on a cigar, wearing a turban-like brown hat, and sporting a thick, Groucho Marx–style mustache. The spectator just steals the show..

And just like that, the "Cigar Guy" Internet star was born. The mystery man has been inserted in pictures and shared around the Web. Yahoo! searches for the mustachioed golf fan twirled up 675% in just one day. Searches were also popular on "Cigar Guy," "cigar guy ryder cup," and "cigar guy tiger woods."
It's the shot that launched a photo-editing frenzy: One image is of the now famous Tiger Woods photo, except everyone, including Tiger, has been turned into the Cigar Guy. Check it out here. There's the Cigar Guy on a Beatles album cover. And the Cigar Guy taking out Sonny Liston.

While the original picture is incredible, it may be even more memorable for taking on a life of its own. A photographic hole-in-one.

Life inmate of Kirikiri Maximum Prison gets outstanding SSCE result

by Adeola Balogun

The zeal with which Adeniyi Ayinla does his job as the head teacher of the prison school at the Kirikiri Maximum Prison, Apapa, Lagos, is amazing. He does it in a way that one can not but think that he earns a salary for taking care of the school and teaching the inmates that attend it. As a prisoner, Ayinla had taken his O' level SSCE exams in the school and had passed all the subjects he entered for in 2007. Thereafter, he proceeded to the National Open University (NOUN) where he is undergoing a diploma programme in Financial Management. Simultaneously, he is pursuing a degree in Theology at the Missions University, USA through correspondence.

Photo:Adeniyi Ayinla

Educational pursuit is usually an exercise reserved for free men and women who set their eyes on certain life accomplishments. But that is not the case with Ayinla who until December 2008, when his death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment, was awaiting the hangman's noose. As a matter of fact, he was on death row for ten years, five months before his death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. Ayinla had been sentenced to death in 1998 after he was found to have been involved in a robbery operation that took place in Mushin, Lagos sometime in 1997.

Speaking with our correspondent, who had accompanied a non-governmental organisation on a visit to the prison, Ayinla, who seemed to have grown deep in the Christian faith, waxed philosophical and spiced every sentence with quotes from the bible as he chatted with our correspondent. He said he had never lost the hope of regaining his freedom one day, and that hope had fired his desire for education, which he said would guarantee his independence and ability to reintegrate himself into the society as soon as he is set free. Fortunately for him, his sense of purpose has attracted help and support from the various religious organisations that throng the prison on a daily basis.

He told our correspondent that he was getting himself educated so that he would not constitute a liability on anyone whenever he walks out of the prison gates. He said, "I have never lost hope of getting a reprieve one day. My hope of survival became strong because I was lucky to become one of those that were moved out of the condemned cell in Abeokuta prison in 2005 as a result of congestion in the prison. In Abeokuta, the condition was so hard because we were clamped in a dingy cell as people on the death row. But when we arrived here, we became freer. We could even walk about, and this, to me, is the green light that I might one day breathe the air of freedom.

"I did not waste time to make good use of the temporary relief. I dusted my books. Before I was arrested in 1997, I already had my O' level certificate, which was not 100 per cent okay. So, in 2006, a year after we arrived here, I took the SSCE and because of my very long years in confinement, I only made three papers, including Mathematics, Economics and Commerce. In 2007, I sat for it again. This time around, I had seven papers while my English was withheld. I was not satisfied because I wanted to have everything at one sitting. I applied for SSCE again, but miraculously, the English which had been withheld was released. Thank God for the study centre of NOUN here. I wanted to start a degree course in Economics, but because the course is not available here, I opted for a diploma. But by the special grace of God, I will still pursue it."

According to the transcript of his 2007 SSCE result with examination number 5250826006, Ayinla had the following result: Commerce A1, Financial Account A1, Economics B3, Government B2, Islamic Studies B3, Literature in English B3, Mathematics B3, Agric Science F9 and English Language C4. Ayinla said he was proud to be a NOUN student pursuing a diploma in Financial Management with matriculation number NOU070292850.

Seeing the way he bubbled with life, one could not but ask how he managed to look so cheerful in a prison environment. To this, he said, "The prison is not supposed to kill your spirit. Rather, it is supposed to reform you. If I had been aware of the consequence of my behaviour, I would never have gone into crime. You see, all those cautions by the elders do not make any meaning to a young man who does not understand the meaning of freedom. In my own case, I got influenced by friends and the company that I kept. I was implicated in the robbery case even though I was not directly involved. But I knew about it and I have since regretted my action. How many young men do you want to tell to stop following friends on the streets? It is not easy. But I am wiser now."

Explaining the positive change in his life, Ayinla said he had been lucky to have people around him, particularly his family and visitors to the prison.

He said, "My mother died exactly three weeks after I was sentenced to death in 1998. I regret that incident a lot, and I don't know how I can forget that for the rest of my life. My fiancée has been so wonderful. While I was in Abeokuta, we lost contact. But when I arrived Lagos, she got to know about it and has been very supportive. She has really surprised me. I don't know how many ladies can be so faithful. I must confess that her case has been giving me so much concern because I don't want to lose such a dedicated lady. And the only way to achieve that is to get my freedom which I fervently pray and fast for.

"Nigerians are wonderful people. I can not quantify the love and support I have enjoyed from those who have come across me in prison. The case of one Captain Salami shocked me. He was the person that paid my first school fees at NOUN, which was N48,000. He met me during one of his visitations to the prison and after finding out about me, he paid the money. There are so many of them that I can not begin to tell you now. So, if you see me keeping hope alive, the reason is that so many people have shown their belief in me that I would one day become a personality in the society.

"I pray that Nigerian authorities, especially the government of Ogun State would have mercy on me and commute my life imprisonment to total freedom."

The Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Prison Service, Mr Ope Fatinikun, was delighted at the progress Ayinla had made in his educational pursuit in spite of his situation. He told our correspondent on the phone that the NPS encourages inmates to get themselves busy and prepare for possible re-integration into the society whenever they walk out free.

"We discovered that about 80 per cent of the inmates, when they come in, they don't have education, and we guess that is why they went into crime. So we ask them to tell us their areas of interest; whether they want to go to school or train in vocational skills. We have adult education centres in the prisons where inmates can go to primary school and secondary school. In fact, we have WAEC and JAMB centres in Ikoyi and Apapa maximum prisons. We have NOUN centres in both Ikoyi and Apapa where inmates can go further in their education. We train those who prefer to go for vocational skills of their choice," he said.

Yesterday, the Ondo State Council of Obas announced the suspension of the Mr

Adepoju for allegedly involving himself in a street brawl with his wife. The council's chairman, the Olowo of Owo, Oba Folagbade

Olateru-Olagbegi, said this in a statement issued to reporters after the meeting of the chieftaincy committee of the council in Akure.

This is coming as police authorities in Ondo State also said a full scale investigation has begun into the recent public brawl between the Deji of Akure, Oluwadare Adepoju Adesina and his estranged wife, Bolanle.

The command's public relations officer, Adeniran Aremu, said the state commissioner of police has ordered that the matter be investigated as a purely criminal case and not as a domestic affair as is sometimes done.

He said the case had since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department and the outcome of the investigation would be made known to the public as soon as it is concluded.

"Aside from this, the state police commissioner, Magaji Nasarawa, has already received interim report on the incident," Mr Aremu said.

He also explained that the command had uncovered a plot by some people to foment trouble in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

He warned those planning to cause a breach of peace as a result of the incident to refrain from doing so, stressing that anyone caught taking laws into his hands would be ‘dealt with decisively.'

Oba suspended

Mr Olateru-Olagbegi who condemned the action of the Akure monarch in strong terms, said the decision to suspend Mr Adesina from the council was taken after the examination of all available evidence which includes, "reports from newspapers, petition written to the council, the press releases from the Deji and other independent investigations on the issue".

The council observed that the incident was unfortunate and against the norm for those who sit on sacred and exalted royal stools in the state. "The committee condemned in its entirety the attitude of the Deji and dissociate itself from the action. The Deji is suspended in the interim from the council pending a fuller investigation into the matter and a final position of the state government on it"

The assault

The Deji of Akure, on Sunday evening beat up one of his wives in a manner that shocked the people of the state and elicited condemnation from far and near.

Mrs Adesina had earlier been ordered out of the palace by the monarch,

following a slight disagreement. The traditional ruler then invaded the private residence of his estranged wife with stern looking people,

suspected to be thugs, who thrashed the woman and left her with lacerated arms.

A brother of Mrs Adesina and some passers-by descended on the Nissan Pathfinder brought to the scene by Oba Adesina. The vehicle, marked "Deji of Akure", was seriously damaged by the irate youth, who vowed to deal with him seriously. It took the quick intervention of the police from the state command to save him from being lynched by the irate mob.

Although the king has not made any public statement on the issue, the traumatised wife has urged the state governor, Olusegun Mimiko, to instruct the state commissioner of police to order a full scale investigation into the attack on her person by her husband. Mrs. Adesina, in a petition via her counsel, Ibraheem Aganum and Co. appealed to Mr. Mimiko to use his office to ensure that justice is done. She said the petition became imperative in order to ensure that the case is not swept under the carpet

THE only man ever to admit involvement in the assassination of American civil rights leader, Malcolm X, was freed on parole on Tuesday, 45 years after he helped gun down the activist.

Thomas Hagan was the last man still serving time in the 1965 killing, part of the skein of violence that wound through the cultural and political upheaval of the 1960s. He was freed from a Manhattan prison where he spent two days a week under a work-release programme.

Hagan, 69, has repeatedly expressed sorrow for being one of the gunmen who fired on Malcolm X, killing one of the civil rights era's most polarizing and compelling figures.

However, one of the groups dedicated to Malcolm X's memory condemned Hagan's parole.

Hagan declined to comment after his release..

"I really haven't had any time to gather my thoughts on anything," he told the Associated Press (AP) by telephone.

Hagan acknowledged that he was one of three men who shot Malcolm X in front of a crowd of hundreds - including several of his young children - as the civil rights leader began a speech at Harlem's Audubon Ballroom on February 21, 1965. Two other accomplices created a distraction in the audience, Hagan has said.

But he said the two men convicted with him were not involved. They, too, maintained their innocence and were paroled in the 1980s. No one else has ever been charged, a fact that has perpetuated debate and theories surrounding the slaying.

The Manhattan District Attorney's office, which prosecuted Hagan and his co-defendants, declined to comment on Hagan's release or his account of the killing.

Hagan applied 17 times before being granted parole last month. He had been sentenced to life in prison for what he described in a 2008 court filing as the deed of a young man who "acted out of rage on impulse and loyalty" to religious leaders.

The assassins gunned down Malcolm X out of anger at his split with the leadership of the Nation of Islam, the black Muslim movement for which he had once served as a prominent spokesman, said Hagan, then known as Talmadge X Hayer.

Malcolm X had spoken out against its leader, Elijah Muhammad, in comments that some of Muhammad's followers denounced as slander.

Remember the Austrian Sex Beast Josef Fritzl ?

Well here is 9ja's own mini version Emma Obot .

An Ikeja Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday sentenced a randy father, who raped his two daughters, to seven years imprisonment with hard labour.

The Magistrate, O.A. Adedayo, ordered that Emmanuel Obott,46, be kept behind bars after finding him guilty on an eight-count charge of assault, battery, and rape.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the plea of Mr. Obott, who raped the girls aged 24 and 22, was not taken.

Enraged by Mr. Obott’s offence, the magistrate called out his family members to enquire whether he had a psychiatric problem. The family members, however, said he had no such ailment.

“It is the most atrocious of crime that could be meted out on one’s flesh and blood. The action of the accused will leave a psychological torture on the girls,” the magistrate said.

Mr. Adedayo advised the family to take the girls to a church for counselling.

The Prosecutor, Chris Takim, a police inspector, had earlier told the court that Mr. Obott, who claimed to be a clearing and forwarding agent, raped his daughters to satisfy his sexual urge.

“On many occasions, he threatened to kill the two girls if they failed to give in to his amorous advances,” Mr. Takim said.

He stated that the accused wilfully destroyed one of the girl’s skirt and blouse valued at N10, 000 in the process of raping her.

Mr. Takim said one of the girls became pregnant for Mr. Obott, who went ahead to obtain an abortion for her, while he flogged the other girl on many occasions for refusing his sexual advances.

Mr. Takim said the unsuspecting mother of the girls had packed out of the house, leaving them behind.

He said the offences, which were committed on April 15 at 3, Jadesola Street, Mende, Maryland, Ikeja, contravened Sections 86, 214, 230, 249, 355, 357 and 360 (d) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.

Several lists and names yesterday made the rounds at our nation’s capital, as anxiety mounted over the new cabinet being constituted by Acting President Goodluck Jonathan. However, it was learnt that a list of the first batch of nominees has been sent to the Senate President. Some names that are on one list do

not appear on other list(s), while some other names appear on more than one list.

Sources close to the Senate leadership confirmed the list has 18 names. However, the Information Committee chair, Ayogu Eze, while briefing reporters on Tuesday, said the official list will be in the Senate by today.

Names on the list include familiar faces like Adetokunbo Kayode, who is likely to return as justice minister, Godswill Orubebe, Nuhu Somo Way, Mohammed Daggash, Odein Ajumogobia, Diezani Allison-Madueke, and Bello Masari, former Speaker of the House of Representatives.

A few dose of surprises

There were a few surprises on the list such as Joy Anenih, wife of Tony Anenih; and Murtala Yar’Adua, an oil magnate, who is one of President Yar’Adua’s nephews. Neither of the two has held any significant political post prior to their nominations. There are also Labaran Maku, former deputy governor of Nasarawa State and student activist; and Segun Aganga, managing director at Goldman Sachs, one of the world’s largest investment bank.

Mr. Aganga, who hails from Ekiti, is also the co-founder of the Nigerian Leadership Initiative. Although he spends most of his time abroad, he is widely regarded as one of the soundest economic minds in Nigeria. His nomination supports the assertion that the Acting President intends to fill his cabinet with technocrats and not political jobbers. It is believed that Mr. Aganga will be charged with either the national planning or finance portfolio.

Mr. Eze, while speaking to journalists, said that there would be no special considerations given to anyone during the screening process.

“The screening will be as vigorous as it has always been,” he said. “Returnee ministers will be taking more questions based on their performance during their stewardship. Everybody will answer questions on what he or she has done or failed to do.

“Those who will be coming back will have the additional responsibility of answering for their stewardship while in office. That, of course, will be taken on board.”

Mr. Eze said the Senate postponed its vacation by one week so that they can finish with the screening of the ministerial nominees and get the government running in full swing.

The final list is still expected to be submitted before the end of the week and has been delayed by several last minute wranglings. Five governors visited Mr. Jonathan yesterday. These include Gbenga Daniel of Ogun State, Isa Yuguda (Bauchi), Peter Obi (Anambra) and Theodore Orji (Abia).

Wednesday, March 10, 2010
Four months after Mr Mathew Amoke and his wife, natives of Akpa Edem in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State were blessed with a set of quadruplets, two males and two females, the couple have returned the children to God, Who has brought new hope to them through the babies. Already, they have received God’s favour with their new kids given scholarships, and their one-room apartment changed into a flat, as well as a car donated to them.

Daily Sun had broken the news of the arrival of the quintuplets to an Okada rider father who had appealed for help from public-spirited individuals.

As the quintuplets were dedicated to God at the Winners Chapel, Nsukka, their father said: “I am grateful to The Sun newspaper, Winners Chapel.”

The quintuplets were delivered through a caesarean section at the Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Nsukka.

The four new born babies christened Mathew, Mark, Miracle and Favour were ushered into the church which perches atop the Nsukka hills with tumultuous ovation from the enthusiastic congregation who had been waiting eagerly for their entry.

Describing the kids as international children, the officiating pastor in charge of the Church, Peace Efemena, thanked God for the children and called on the congregation not to relent in their support and assistance for them, describing them as rare gifts from God.

He disclosed that a scholarship scheme has been endowed for the babies courtesy of some members of the Church who have also relocated the family from a one-room apartment to a two-bed room flat.

Pastor Efemena also told Daily Sun that a car has been donated to the kids by philanthropists.

His words: “Our founder Bishop Onyedepo has a very large heart for welfare of the people, so in our branches we emulate him. That is why some of us here have decided to give scholarship to the quintuplets. Besides, we also relocated them from their one room apartment to a two bed room flat. We are very much concerned about the lives of the kids because they are God’s special gift and we see them as future pastors. I urge the couple to stop getting more children. They should concentrate on giving them proper up bring both spiritually and physically.”

In a chat with Daily Sun, the father of the babies said: “I cannot thank God enough for what he has done for me. May his name be glorified forever. I thank him for opening my eyes to choose where to worship him. It is only him that can adequately compensate our pastor and my brothers and sisters in the church for their love and assistance to us.

“My gratitude goes to The Sun newspapers for exposing us to the global community from where we have been getting assistance. In fact, somebody in Europe called us, saying he saw The Sun publication about the quintuplets in the Internet.

“Caring for four kids at a time is an enormous task, but by the Grace of God, we are coping, we are still appealing to the Nsukka Local Government to come to our aid. The kids are yearning for favour from the state governor, Dr. Sullivan Chime and his wife whose love for the under privileged is unequaled. Any financial help to us can be paid to the kids account at the Intercontinental Bank, Nsukka Branch number – 0012110000558931.

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday commended the executive government and unanimously adopted a motion ratifying the $1 million donation by the state government to Haiti, after last week's devastating earthquake. The state governor, Babatunde Fashola, wrote a letter to the House, following the decision of the state executive council during its weekly meeting on Monday, to adopt a "resolution recognising this humanitarian service". Although the motion was passed with relative ease, a few lawmakers raised concerns about the source of the donation, wondering if it would be taken from the 2009 budget or the yet-to-be-passed 2010 budget. However, the magnitude and urgency of the Haitian need, coupled with the fact that Nigeria, as a nation, has been absent on the list of donating nations, helped douse the concerns. "The governor has the right to spend up to 25 per cent of (money voted for) donation in the 2009 budget," said the Speaker, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, as a reminder to the lawmakers, and consequently, the motion was moved by the majority leader, Kolawole Taiwo. An example The Lagos Assembly also called on other Nigerian states to help the needy Haitians. "The federal government should have done this but there is a vacuum at the top and there is no response from Nigeria," said Ahmed Omisiore, chairman of the House committee on information. Adefunmilayo Tejuosho, representing Mushin I, was also worried that the federal government, which was unable to respond to the case of the suspected bomber, Farouk Mutallab, is "still not available to respond to the need of the Haiti people. "The donation should be stressed as coming from the Lagos State government and not from Nigeria because we cannot continue to shoulder the responsibility of the entire country," she said. While it was not part of the adopted motion, the majority leader, Lola Akande, representing Ikeja II, suggested that a minimum amount of N50,000 should be made compulsory for each lawmaker as their contribution, which was supported by Babatunde Ogala, who also suggested that the contribution should be deducted "immediately from source". In response, the speaker said anybody who wants to contribute to the state's donation can walk into any branch of Skye Bank where an account has already been opened. Bringing the discussion home, Sanai Agunbiade said "while we are thinking of Haiti there are some communities in Lagos suffering from serious environmental degradation. The rains will soon be here and something must be done." NEMA responds Also in its response to the disaster, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said it plans to send cash donation. Speaking to reporters in Abuja yesterday on the role of the agency regarding the incident in Haiti, the Director General of the organisation, Mohammed Audu Bida, explained that the enormity of the incident is so great that instead of moving relief materials through the seas, which are already congested as a result of massive goods coming from other countries, sending cash right away makes more sense. Mr. Bida who declined to disclose the exact amount earmarked for the people of Haiti, said Vice President Goodluck Jonathan who is the chairman of agency's board has already said that the government will come to the aid of the country. He criticised those condemning the perceived slow response of the Nigerian governme
