Forbes Magazine’s world’s richest list that estimates Globacom Chairman, Mike Adenuga’s networth at $2billion has been described as a gross under-estimation, financial experts close to Adenuga’s business empire have revealed.

Mike-Adenuga-1.jpg?width=250“Conoil Producing alone, operator of six oil blocks and holder of 25 per cent stake in Joint Development Zone Block 4, with proven reserves of more than one billion barrels of crude and 7 trillion cubic feet of gas, is worth more than $2 billion”, said the financial expert in an interview with P.M. News this morning.

He indeed estimated that Conoil Producing, without factoring in Conoil, the downstream firm involved in the retail sale of refined petroleum products, is worth more than $10 billion.

It appears that Forbes evaluated Adenuga’s wealth on his Globacom holdings alone, as the reports dwelled mostly on the network’s subscription, the company’s $1 billion investment in fiber optics, Glo-1, to link Africa with the rest of the world and Globacom’s operations in West African nations such as Ghana, Cote D’Ivoire, Benin, Togo, Senegal and Gambia.

“Whatever criteria they use are faulty”, said the expert. “Globacom West African operation is worth more than $5 billion, when the huge investments in Ghana, Togo and Benin are put in the picture”.

P.M News also learnt that Adenuga has huge investments in real estate in Nigeria and Europe. Three years ago, his interests were estimated at about $3 billion. And of course, he owns majority shares in Equitorial Trust Bank.

On Wednesday, Forbes magazine released its list of the world’s richest.

The magazine listed 1210 individuals across the globe, with Aliko Dangote, listed as Nigeria’s and Africa’s richest man with networth of $13.8 billion.

According to Forbes, the combined wealth of these 1,210 individuals is $4.5 trillion (£2.78 trillion) – which is slightly more than the UK’s total debt which stands at £2.34 trillion.

Since Forbes listed Dangote in 2008, there has always been controversy among Nigerians on whether the magazine’s goggles is not afflicted with some sight disorders, as most Nigerians wondered why Adenuga’s name was left out.

The controversy is even now going to deepen, on who is richer between Aliko and Adenuga, the magazine having now recognized Adenuga’s deep pockets, after several years of omission.

According to reports, in the past year Aliko Dangote’s fortune surged 557% to $13.8 billion, up from $2.1 billion, after he consolidated all his public and private cement holdings throughout Africa into the continent’s largest cement manufacturer and took it public on the Nigerian stock exchange in October. Dangote Cement now has a market value in excess of $13 billion, and accounts for a quarter of the Nigeria Stock Exchange’s total market capitalization. Dangote also has interests in flour, pasta and sugar manufacturing.

According to Forbes, Dangote is richer than longtime white South African billionaires Nicky Oppenheimer of Debeers and Johann Rupert of luxury goods group Richemont, which owns Cartier, Dunhill and other premium brands. He is also richer than Chelsea Football Club owner, Roman Abramovich.

But the jury may not have a word yet on the richest African, between Aliko and Adenuga.

We followed the rumors, the leaks, the speculation and the comings and goings of various peers and future competitors, but Apple's finally gone and revealed the updated iPad. Who presented the event? None other than CEO Steve Jobs himself.

The iPad 2 is powered by an Apple A5 chip, a dual-core CPU that somehow consumes the same amount of power as the iPad 1's A4 unit, but delivers "up to 2X" the speed. This also leads to faster graphics, which Jobs quoted as being "nine times" better than the iPad 1. The A5 is the "first dual-core tablet to ship in volume."

iPad 2 is just 8.8mm deep, compared to the iPhone 4's 9.3mm and original iPad's chunky 13.4mm, and it's also just 1.3 pounds--much less than the original's 1.5 mass, and thus way more handler-friendly. It's coming in both white and black (that's the glass front bezel, not the aluminum back) and will will launch March 11th in the U.S. and it'll be available in 26 nations from March 25th.

white-ipad-2-steve-jobs-apple.jpg?width=400The twin cameras on front and back support PhotoBooth and Apple's videocalling protocol FaceTime, the front unit is a VGA-res webcam, and the rear unit has 720p video recording powers. To go with the new video features, iMovie is now on the iPad, bringing simple touch-based editing and production skills directly to the tablet itself--it's a $4.99 App Store app, available universally (so can we expect it on iPhones too?). An iOS GarageBand app is also en-route for the same price. The device will run iOS 4.3, which includes a much faster mobile Safari browser, iTunes Home Sharing for easy media streaming at home, better AirPlay features and the return of the screen orientation lock switch. This iOS refresh also brings the Wi-Fi hotspot skills that were revealed on the Verizon iPhone to the iPad.

Pricing may have been the first iPad's secret killer feature, so Apple's not messing with the recipe: The Wi-Fi only 16GB iPad 2 will launch at the same $499 as the original, and the most expensive 3G-enabled 64GB version will still cost $829.

In terms of accessories, the iPad 2 supports a new HDMI cable that hooks directly to the 30-pin iPod connector (and also supports charging via USB) which mirror's the display onto an HDTV at up to 1020p full-HD resolution. The idea is to boost presentation skills of teachers and business folk, and the system even recognizes if you rotate the iPad. A new flush-fitting case has also been created, in multiple colors and coming with a neat magnetic latch that automatically conforms to the iPad's shape.

Revealing the iPad, Jobs began by noting that Apple's competitors teased Apple for using the word "magical" and that the price wasn't reasonable--he wondered what those same competitors are saying now. Jobs then gave us an update on iPad sales figures: 15 million in 2010, in just nine months--"More than every Tablet PC ever sold," and earning Apple $9.5 billion in 2010 alone (there was even a little dig at Samsung's Galaxy Tab sales figures). There are also over 65,000 iPad-specific apps, while the competition launches with "at most" a hundred apps.

Jobs began his iPad presentation noting that users have downloaded over 100 million ebooks from the iBookstore in well under a year's availability, and that combined with the App Store and iTunes stores, Apple has just achieved over 200 million accounts in the stores, what jobs thinks is the most accounts with credit cards of any online service...

That's a lot of statistics to back up that the iPad, and its ecosystem, has been an astonishing success.

white-ipad-2-face-time-1.jpg?width=620

More News:

San Francisco, March 3 (IANS) Apple CEO Steve Jobs returned from his medical leave to to unveil the next-generation iPad. The new iPad is thinner than an iPhone 4, boasts faster processing speeds, and sports two cameras for Apple's FaceTime feature.

'While others have been scrambling to copy the first generation iPad, we're launching iPad 2, which moves the bar far ahead of the competition and will likely cause them to go back to the drawing boards yet again,' Jobs said at a launch event here Wednesday.

A surprised a audience gave him a standing ovation and tech bloggers immediately and breathlessly tweeted out the news.

The iPad 2 also comes in both black and white versions, and will be available in the US from March 11. Prices start at $499 for a WiFi-only model. There are a total of nine different iPad 2 models, with Verizon and AT&T having their own distinct 3G versions.

Apple has also taken strides in making the iPad 2 more than just a device for consuming media, as its predecessor was. With the announcement of tablet versions of its Garageband and iMovie apps, it is hoping the new iPad will be used as a content-creation device.

In addition, Apple has also designed its own case for the iPad 2, called Smart Cover. The case (below) uses a magnetic hinge, folds into a stand for typing, and will wake or put to sleep the tablet when opened or closed, respectively.

Along with the iPad 2, Jobs also announced an update to iOS. Version 4.3 includes a faster Safari, enhancements to AirPlay and the Personal Hotspot feature. The latter will allow users to share their iPhone 4 cellular data connection over WiFi with up to five devices.

But the appearance of Jobs made a bigger splash than the unveiling of the new Apple iPad.

Jobs was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2003. He had a liver transplant in 2009. On January 17, he took his second leave from the company in the past two years.

Speculation about Jobs' health had increased in recent weeks, with tabloids weighing in with unsubstantiated reports.

Some of those rumours were tempered when Jobs was photographed in February attending a private dinner with President Barack Obama and other Silicon Valley elite.

Life has been challenging for 31-year old Islamic cleric, Yekini Akeem, an SS-2 Student of Itabo Community High School, Itabo, Lanlate, Oyo State, Southwest Nigeria. This is because he is attending secondary school at that age and he has two wives and seven children.

Yekini-Akim1-201x336.jpg?width=201

•Yekini Akeem

In a chat with P.M.NEWS, Alfa, as he is popularly referred to by his colleagues, said one of the greatest challenges facing him has been the difficulty of interacting with his classmates who are far younger than him.

Some of them, he claimed, heap lots of insults on him daily because of his age and they know that back home he has two wives and seven children.

Alfa said: “I disregard every insult because I know what I want. Often, I serve punishment together with my classmates even when it is receiving strokes of the cane.”

Yekini blamed the delay in his secondary education on an illness that affected his father in 1995 when he was preparing for his Junior Secondary School Certificate exam, JSCE. This later truncated his education.

“ After staying for six years at home, Alfa said he later enrolled in a Qu’ranic school. He graduated in Arabic studies in 2004 and became a qualified Islamic teacher (Alfa).

After many years of staying away from school, Alfa said he attended a public lecture by Mallam Surakat Abdul Rofiu which ignited his desire to return to school.

After the lecture, Yekini approached a community leader, Chief Saraki who assisted him to enrol as a JS1 student in 2006. He was later promoted to JS2 and he wrote his junior WAEC.

Commenting on Yekini’s attitude and performance in school, his Vice Principal, Mr. Gbenga Adeshina Babatunde said he has been of good conduct, therefore, he had always been interested in his education.

After his secondary education, Alfa is said to be interested in studying Arabic at tertiary level.

Alfa-two-wives-from-left--450x336.jpg?width=450

•His wives: Rofiat (l) and senior wife Sadiat

But his ambition may be thwarted by two factors. One, his poor financial background. His two wives are petty traders. One sells banana while the second wife sells food. Yet he has seven children to cater for. One of them is already a JS 2 student. Alfa relies on his meagre earning as an Islamic cleric and farming to cater for his family....

Two, obviously because of his age and distractions at home, Yekini is not a particularly brilliant student.

His principal at Itabo Community High School, Mr. Ayo Opaderin, described Alfa as a humble student but entertains fears about his ability to go further in education.

He said his poor English might hinder his understanding of other subjects. But he admitted his education will assist him a lot in his chosen field as an Islamic cleric.

Another daunting task for Yekini who was made Senior Prefect because of his age is that of relating with relatively younger classmates.

For example, the Senior Prefect Girls, Suliat Aderoju, 19, is one of the oldest of his classmates. Others in SS 2 with him include Miss Olayinola Jumoke, 18, and 16-year old Toheed Aderinto.

Suliat said of Alfa: “whenever we are playing in the class, he cautions us. He is a nice person who always encourages us to take our studies seriously. He is very disciplined. He may not be good in English Language, but he is good in Yoruba and Accounting.”

Alfa disclosed that he went back to school so that he could be a better Islamic preacher because he needed to master English to be able to evanglise Islamic doctorines, adding “Education is very important and I feel I should be educated to be a teacher. I am not ashamed.”

The scandals unveiled by London’s Sunday Times and the Panorama, broadcast on BBC on Monday, cost England as it was beaten to the 2018 World Cup bid by Vladimir Putin’s Russia. Photo: FIFA President Sepp Blatter hands over the World Cup trophy to Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov (R) after the official announcement that Russia will host the 2018 World Cup on December 2 Photo: REUTERS

It was supposed to be a return to the “motherland of football” as Joseph Blatter, FIFA President, said on the podium moments before the envelope of the winning bid was passed to him. When the winning bid was announced, there were about eight Russians in the hall with the others in apparent shock. Russia won against all expectations but it could have been swung in their favour by the words of Putin, Russia’s President, who on Wednesday criticised England over the FIFA exposes. “I would like to note that recently we have watched with disappointment as an obvious campaign was being unleashed against members of the FIFA executive committee,” he said. “They are being smeared in dirt and compromised. I consider it as part of unscrupulous bit of competition in preparations for the selection of the host-country for the World Cup.”..

The politics of the 2018 bid

England was said to have had the best technical bid but Russia trumped all the stats by promising to inject over $10 billion to host the world. Russia will also be hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics. The Spain/Portugal bid President, Angel Villar Llona, in his presentation on Thursday said: “I love FIFA dearly but those I love the most are my colleagues in the Exco. Recently we have been criticised by many media outlets. Unfortunately for them, FIFA is a clean institution.” The defeat will be made more unpalatable as the England bid had been described by Blatter as being both excellent and remarkable. But it was not remarkable enough to be chosen. In revelations after FIFA’s members had voted in a secret ballot, it emerged that England did not make it to the second ballot.

Last minute attempts by Prime Minister, David Cameron, Prince William and David Beckham to persuade the football’s world governing body executive members came too late to douse the embarrassments suffered by these members by the revelations of the BBC and London Times. Amos Adamu and Reynald Temarii, the two FIFA executive members named in cash-for vote scandal, had been suspended and fined some sums of money following the revelations by the London Times that both members were ready to sell their bidding votes to the highest bidders. There will be recriminations from the British press but many observers feel that England shot itself in the foot by being “undiplomatic.”

Qatar trumps the USA

Qatar became the smallest country to be awarded the hosting rights of a FIFA World Cup by snagging the 2022 World Cup. The Qatar bid committee used French football legend, Zinedine Zidane, as a goodwill ambassador and said in their presentation that the World Cup project of hosting the world in 2022 could help unify the region. There was also the promise to overcome overwhelming heat by air conditioning the stadia it will build. Sheikh Mohammad bin Hamad Al-Thani, Qatar’s bid chairman, sounding all exultant after the pronouncement said: “Thank you for believing in change, thank you for believing in expanding the game, thank you for giving Qatar a chance. We will not let you down. You will be proud of us, you will be proud of the Middle East and I promise you this.”

And in what could be a final word to the backlash that will definitely come forth after the England snub, Llona had this to say, “You have already heard enough slander in the media, the bidding process is clean regardless of what they say.” The world will converge in Russia in 2018. And as the Russian Deputy Prime Minister, Igor Shuvalov, was handed the World Cup by Blatter, he celebrated by saying: “You have entrusted us with the FIFA World Cup for 2018 and I can promise, we all can promise, you will never regret it. Let us make history together.”

History will definitely be in the making as the Eastern European giants host the greatest single sport fiesta in the world while Qatar’s 1.7 million people prepare to welcome the world in 2022.

After almost two years of waiting, Nigeria’s critically acclaimed“hip-hop messiah” M.I (Mr. Incredible) releases his Sophomore album MI2. MI 2 begins with a track titled “Announcements” which is more of ashort film that essentially re-introduces M.I to the world... The trackhas the right music film score and conjures up a theater feel with avoice-over asking all to switch off all “mobile” phones in the theater. The next track titled ‘Action Film’ continues with the short film but within seconds of introducing M.I, M.I hits the ground running getting into music action. “Left (x6), left, right, left, right, ha! ladies and gentlemen, I am back. . . came back to set a new standard,” raps M.I. Indeed.

He does set the new standard and raises the bar for Nigeria/Africa’s music industry. Track 3 titled ‘Slow Down’ begins and you know MI is really seriously and “going in” as they say instreet slang terms when you are ready to dissect a song, job etc. MI2covers the gamete with diverse genres and does it so well. On track 3,M.I delivers a slow version of what sounds to me like a Sean Kingstonmeets Sean Paul Dancehall accent as he flirts with his love interest.Who knew MI could “toast (flirt)”, as Nigerians would say, in aNigerian-Jamaican accent. “Whaa gwan?”

Making sure no one confines him to the dancehall genre or confuse him to want to be a Rastafarian, M.I switches up his lyrical flow and beatsby taking on Nigeria’s traditional genre of music called ‘high-life.’This genre typically appeals to a more mature crowd but in recent timeshas produced hip-life music greats like Nigeria’s J-Martins and Timaya that appeal to both young and old. The track, Track 4 titled ‘Number One ft. Flavor’shows hip-hop can blend seamlessly with high-life. The sound isbeautiful M.I is clearly not leaving any fan behind: old, young,Nigerian or otherwise. Track 5 ‘Anybody’ is a return tothe short film concept sprinkled throughout the album. There is theflute and piano creating the right backdrop to showcase his lyricalprowess.

I feel like M.I anticipated I would spot the Timaya high-life influence. But in case I or anyone missed it, the next track, ‘Anybody’ explicitly features artist ‘Timaya’ on it. While I want the ‘Anybody’ title to geta bit more creative, I appreciate how M.I effortlessly shows that heresides among the best of the best in Nigeria/Africa’s hip-hop musicscene.

Picking up on I, guess my post telepathic communications, the next track is indeed a showcase of M.I alongside the best of the best inAfrica’s music scene, TuFace. M.I’s choice of title for the track ‘Nobody’ makesme wonder if he was also giving a nod to Nollywood (Nigeria’s filmindustry) with one liner titles that make it easy for the streetmarketers to easily pronounce? ‘Anybody’ and now, ‘Nobody?’ “Okay,” Ithink.

‘Nobody,’ however, illustrates and reminds me of the brilliant M.I I was introduced to, via his music, in 2008.

“Ask TuFace. It’s like toothpaste. Without your gist in their mouth, they get toothache,” he raps in his verses as TuFacesings the hook. “Just because say you no tie shoelace they carry yourgist around like a suitcase. Ask Omotola, ask Genevieve. The kind offalse things that people believe. If City people write, City people readuntil there is nothing real, all na weave. Ask Timaya, ask Wande Coal. They follow you bumper to bumper on a Sunday. . .” I am lovingM.I’s references to Nollywood and Music stars and explaining thechallenge of being a celebrity i.e. always in the lime light.

Taking gossip magazines on and also sharing the life of a celebrity in showbiz, M.I uses his next track ‘Beef’ to get out all the “hate” brought on, this time, from music industrypeople. ‘Beef’ for our non-rap listening audience is essentially havingissues or in Nigerian local dialect “wahala (problem)” with acolleague/persons in the industry. It is commonly used in rap music andis what rap wars are made of.

“See dem, see dem. They wanna beef me. Now that they see BET on my CV . . . my motto is do more talk less. Neverget mad at another man’s success,” raps M.I showing his frustration with those who envy his success and seek to sabotage him.“So when people tryna make sure I chop (eat) less, I say no be yourfault you are just jobless.” MI raps on a jazz beats and stays on pointwith the beat, rhymes and delivery. His next track stops “chewing thebeef” and again transitions into a short film titled ‘Wild Wild West.’

The track is okay but not a highlight for me. As if to sense he might lose the interest of his audience on that track, M.I returns with avery nice surprise wrapped in track 9′s ‘My Head My Belle.’ Notconceding the global music audience to only Western musicians, M.Ireferences heavy Spanish accentuation in his track. As I listen, Iappreciate the concise and clear thought process that went into makingan album with a diverse body of work for a audience.

In ‘My Head O, My Belle’ I also hear what sounds like a Nigerian influenced derivative work of Mexican-American singer, songwriter andguitarist Ritchie Valen’s ‘La Bamba’ song. M.I really turns the beat onits head and adds a much softer touch on the acoustic guitar soundsused. The track finishes with a skit from Nigerian singer Waje whosounds more like a Los Angeles Valley girl that any listener of NickiMinaj would relate to. The skit transitions to track 10, ‘One Naira ft.Waje.’ Naira is Nigeria’s currency.

On ‘One Naira,’ despite Waje’s strong vocals as a feature on the track, there is no confusion on whose album it is. M.I gives a poetictype performance reminding us a big part of rap is poetry. The track isabout relationships and loyalty. Loyalty “whether na one Naira, or 1million. Baby you got me,” loosely translated to mean whether you arerich or poor (one dollar vs one million dollars), you got me. I guesstrue love can be that loyal, right?

In any event, as I savor and focus on the lingering taste from ‘One Naira,’ M.I gives me another unexpected transition. While M.I hails fromJos, Northern Nigeria, he has not necessarily used his album to touchon socio-political/economic issues. In all fairness, the Jos crisis theworld came to know happened after the release of his Freshman Album‘Talk About It.” But, in MI2, it is a no holds bar. M.I delves intocorruption, poor education, Niger delta issue, shooting, looting, degrading of women and using women as sex objects, among other topics.

“When they gbongbonlo, u come dey gbangbanla. . . na so dey craze dey start.”

Don’t ask me what that means. It is just a catchy jibberish hook that says when you go crazy, I go crazier. The “gbongbonlo and gbangbala”give way to verses with deeper context and content that will most likelyimmediately connect with audiences whether they be in the ghettos ofCompton, Los Angeles or Ajegunle, Lagos. As I listen, I am sure thissong will be a big hit. I am mesmerized from the beginning to the end.

The transition into the next track in terms of the line up is, in my view, a bit off. From social issues M.I transitions to being the “Undisputed Champion.” Errr. . . didn’t see that coming. Nevertheless, the hook is simple, thelyrics are not trying too hard, he makes his point and moves on,quickly. The next song sort of attempts to do what his track ‘Jehovah’did in his first album. First, MI features an artist ‘Praise’ who soundsmore like John Legend. ‘Praise’ gives a powerful introduction, theinstruments are more of claps from a praise worship session in church. The lyrics are empowering and encourage listeners to be ‘Epic,’ to betrue to themselves, keep it real. The artist Praise really shines on thetrack, yet he does not steal the show from M.I. Praise hits the highoctaves and really delivers the message of empowerment on a high note.

Track 14 goes into the credit/acknowledgment section of the album and having people say one thing about him they don’t like. I have neverreally seen this done before. On the one hand it could be seen as a lackof self confidence. But, on the other hand, it would take a veryconfident person who is in tune with self to ask people to say what theydon’t like about him, record it and share it with the world. The peopleon the track revealed MI is “very absorbed,” “perfectionist to afault,” “bossy,” “bullies everyone,” “loves to win all the arguments,”“womanizes a lot,” “quite dirty, sometimes,” “very vindictive,” “farts alot,” “holds a grudge,” “very selfish” and “not punctual.” There were afew kind words like he gives a lot. Nevertheless, people really had alot to say and I thought to myself, “I guess M.I will be very immune totweets and facebook attacks for a long time to come?” In any event, Iwas unsure how to interpret this.

Where I was confused on the interpretation, Track 15 ‘Imperfection’ provided context. The whole idea that people act like they can’t makemistakes. But, they do. They are imperfect because they humans. For M.I,realizing that about himself, he calls on God ot help him out when heis imperfect. The son of a Preacher, he raps that he is not expectedtocurse, among other sinful acts, but he does. So I guess track 13essentially prepared us for track 15 where M.I reveals his imperfectionsand that he is human. He reveals money owed to debtors, anger, personalissues, all kinds of imperfection but concludes he is essentially madeperfect and at peace when he calls on God.

Track 16 finishes with a pledge to remain ‘Unstoppable’ in his music and life’s quest. The album wraps up with track 17 titled ‘Represent’which essentially is a shout out to to his record label Chocolate Cityand label mates: Ice Prince, Jesse Jagz and Brymo who all feature onMI2.

As I listen to the album again and the final exit MI makes, I am happy that the album has not been one of those “braggadacious” waste ofspace and yelling matches on who is the better rapper, a feature that isso common in rap and rap albums. There is so much substance, I not onlywelcome the seeming vanity on track 17 but think it is well deserved. It will give me a chance to really sit back and digest it all. In themeantime, all work and no play makes M.I a very dull boy. We don’t wantthat, not for a brilliant artist.

The gang of men had, at about 9am, stormed the banks located in Folagbade area of the town in an 18-seater bus and a Jetta Volkswagen, armed with sophisticated weapons. They were said to have fired sporadic shots into the air, apparently to scare away workers and residents. Passersby ran helter-skelter, while motorists abandoned their vehicles to escape from the troubled spot.

Following information received about their presence, the police raced to the scene with Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), thereby forcing the bandits to flee. They took time out to shoot at and deflate the tyres on the armoured vehicle as they run away.

Two of the suspects were killed in the shooting, but the rest of the gang escaped..

Police promise

Banks in Ijebu Ode were shut down some months ago in protest of the incessant bank robberies in the town. They were re-opened recently after the state government purchased the Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC).

The State Commissioner of Police, Musa Daura, said that the Command was on top of the situation and that he has been in close contact with the Area Commander of the area.

“I am still awaiting details from the Area Commander, but I have been in regular contact with him,” Mr Daura said. The police boss urged members of the public to go about their normal duties, promising that the police will not relent in providing adequate security to the people in the state, especially during the last months of the year.

It was easy in retrospect in the 1912 Olympic Stadium late on Friday night to say you had seen it coming, that the defeat which struck down the mighty Lightning Bolt had not arrived entirely out of the blue. The amateur psychologists, the budding Freuds among us, might have read the runes in the Jamaican's somewhat leaden body-language as he emerged from the tunnel at the east end of the arena for the big race on the north side of the Swedish capital..

Was that the hint of a limp as Usain Bolt made his way up the finishing straight towards the 100m start? If not, the world's fastest man was certainly dragging his feet. In contrast, half a minute or so later, Tyson Gay appeared on the track looking like a man on a mission. The American had a purpose in his stride and was deep in conversation with himself.Photo Left :American Tyson Gay celebrates his 100m victory on Friday night but said, 'You've got to be honest, Usain went out there knowing he wasn't in the best shape'

It was not difficult to imagine the gist. This was the one. This was his big chance to claim the big scalp. And thus it proved.

Bolt lined up for the 100m final at the DN Galan Meeting but when the starting gun fired, at the third time of asking, he was never at the races. Gay was out of his blocks ahead of him and had the race as good as won by halfway. The 27-year-old Kentuckian prevailed by a stride in 9.84sec, breaking Asafa Powell's stadium record and earning a diamond to take home for his mother.

Bolt was the runner-up in 9.97, a pale shadow of the sparkling gem who had dazzled the world with his 9.69 slowing down at the Beijing Olympics two years ago and with his 9.58 pushing to the line at the World Championships in Berlin last summer. This was his slowest 100m time outside of a qualifying-round heat, and his first defeat in a 100m final since Powell beat him by 0.01sec at the same Stockholm meeting in July 2008.

So, had the sprint world turned on its head? Had the jolt for Bolt marked a definitive changing of the guard?

The answer was clear to see in the muted demeanour of the victor. It was not exactly a hollow victory for Gay, but it was nowhere near a decisive one. "You've got to be honest," he said, reflecting on the upset. "Usain went out there knowing he wasn't in the best shape. Neither of us was at our best, but I was expecting to win.

"I respect him for still coming down here to compete for the fans. I came here knowing I wasn't 100 per cent either. My knee was bothering me. I just blocked everything out and ran the best I could."

Gay has been hampered by hamstring and knee problems this summer. Bolt missed six weeks of training and racing because of an Achilles tendon injury. The rust was clear to see in his heat and in the final. Bolt has three weeks in which to brush up sufficiently to gain revenge in the scheduled rematch, in the final meeting of the Samsung Diamond League series in Brussels on 27 August. "I need to work on my strength," he said. "My strength is really low. It let me down in the first 30 metres. Tyson was in better shape."

Bolt's resolve would also appear to require some strengthening. On the eve of the big race he confessed he had "slacked off" this summer, with no global championship to aim for. In the wake of defeat on Friday, he added: "This is not one of those seasons when I am fully working hard. This is my easy season. If you don't beat me this year, then it's not going to happen. Next year I will take care of business."

In late August next year, Bolt's 100m world title will be on the line at Daegu in South Korea. Meanwhile, at Crystal Palace next Friday his American conqueror will be on the start line at the Aviva London Grand Prix. The Lightning Bolt, beaten in Stockholm but still king of the sprint world, will not attend the south London Palace.

Stern-looking military men recently stormed the Trinity Anglican Primary School, Gwagwalada, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in a commando style, abducted two pupils and fled. Panic seized teachers and pupils of the school when they sighted the unfriendly visitors, all naval officers, who were said to have demanded for the head teacher screaming, “who is the headmaster/mistress here?”

Photo:Mrs. Paulyn Midalah

The five armed men, according to eye-witnesse accounts, proceeded to whisk away Favour and Marvel Steve Midalah, both pupils of the school, in the full glare of the shell-shocked teachers and other pupils.

An eyewitness recounted: “A well-fed" woman was directing the officers on what to do. When our headmistress confronted them, the woman told her to ask the parents to come to police station in Gwagwalada and meet the children there.”

Mother of the abducted kids, Mrs. Paulyn Midalah alleged that the abduction of her children was carried out on the order of the wife of a retired top naval officer. She said the woman also gave order to the police to arrest her and detain her along with her children until her husband would come for them.

She said her children had left home for school in the morning of Tuesday, April 28, 2010: “Around 10.30am that day, I received a telephone call from my children’s headmaster that a certain woman had come to the school with armed naval officers to pick my children from school.

“I immediately put a call through to my son, Favour, and he picked it and said ‘Hello Mummy.’ Soon after, I guess someone had collected the phone from my child. “After that, all attempts to reach him on that phone proved abortive as my phone kept telling me the number was switched off. I became very worried and rushed to the school and met the headmaster who confirmed that a certain woman came with armed naval officers to pick my children from school and bundled their bicycles into her vehicle.

“The headmaster couldn’t remember the name of the woman that came to the school to whisk my kids away. I rushed to the school gate but couldn’t find anyone to give me proper briefing. I rushed back to the house and the kids were not home, I was more confused. and started running up and down our Estate at.

“Somewhere in our estate, Phase 1, Gwagwalada, I sighted a white bus carrying the children’s bicycles. I later learnt that it was the wife of a top naval chief (name witheld) who came to my children’s school with armed naval officers to whisk my children away.

“My husband had worked for her before, but he left them three years ago after my family had a motor accident on March 17, 2007. He sustained compound fracture and even lost his left elbow. My son Favour’s face was so badly battered by glasses that we had to take him for plastic surgery. She abandoned us to our fate and my husband had to sell the house he had just built then to raise the money for surgery on his badly fractured left hand.

“My husband still has about 15 iron screws in his left hand up till today. My son’s face, where surgeons removed glasses from three months, six months and even one year after the accident, is still there as proof of man’s inhumanity to man.

“When I saw them, I confronted them. They said I needed to go with them to the Gwagwalada Police Station, which I did. On arrival at the police station, the woman started making some allegations against my husband and me. She told the police to detain us and never to release me until my husband surfaced. That she had an unsettled issue with my husband. I told her that I didn’t work with her so what was my offence?

“She kept raining abuses on me and said that I must sleep at the police station. We eventually slept at the Gwagwalada Police Station.

“The following morning my family, friends and well wishers prevailed on the police to release the children. Before my children could be released, the Inspector Crime at the station had to call the naval chief’s wife and obtained her permission.

“All attempts by our family, friends and well wishers including that of a lawyer to bail me proved abortive. Police vehemently refused to grant me bail saying I must get clearance from the woman or my husband had to come. I told them that my husband was out of town on a business trip but they would not listen.

“In the police cell I was subjected to the most dehumanizing experience of my life. I had to lie on bare floor that had been contaminated with urine and human excretment, with maggots scattered all over the room. I spent three days at Gwagwalada Police Station.

“By afternoon on Friday, April 30, 2010, the Inspector, Crimes at the station instructed a junior police officer to bring me from the cell. When I was brought out he said the woman wanted to speak with me.

“She said since I had refused to tell them the whereabouts of my husband she has instructed the police to transfer my case to Kuje where I would be jailed. Not too long after we spoke, I was taken to Kuje Police Station and detained for another four days.

“All attempts to bail me were denied because according to the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO), besides that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) was not around, the woman had not given them the go ahead.

“It was not until the fifth day when my family members threatened to bring my children back to the police station that the DCO agreed that my family should bring someone with landed property at Kuje to bail me. When my family eventually brought someone with landed property, the old story of the DPO that the woman was not reachable at the moment continued.

“On Tuesday, May 4, 2010, my brother came to the police station and told me that they had contacted the press. Later, the Inspector Crime from Gwagwalada Police Station came to Kuje Police Station. My brother informed me that surprisingly the man who strongly opposed my release on bail at Gwagwalada Police Station was now canvassing that I be released. He said the woman had communicated to them that she got a call from a journalist and that I should be released to avoid the press. I was released and asked to come with my husband in a week’s time. I spent seven days in police custody

“In the same manner two years ago, she used naval ratings and abducted two of my husband’s younger brothers. They beat them mercilessly and took them to her house where she kept them in custody for one week.

“I hereby appeal to all human rights agencies to come to the aid of my family and stop this injustice against us where some animals are more equal than others. Where a woman would use her husband’s position as a to abduct people’s children from school and use money and influence to deny me bail from police custody for seven days.”

However, all efforts to reach the retired naval chief’s wife on her cell phones proved abortive. She constantly evaded calls placed on her two phone lines. At other times, she picked her calls but once she heard the voice she cut the line and switched off immediately. FCT police spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, said he is not aware of the development. He promised to find out and later intimate the reporter but he never did.

FG declares 7 days mourning.End of the Drama Free the President

Burial today in Katsina 2 p.m. • Jonathan to be sworn in 8 a.m. FG declares 7 days mourning, public holiday today

Exactly 70 days after he was flown back to Nigeria from treatment in Saudi Arabia, President Umaru Yar’Adua died on Wednesday night of undisclosed causes.

He became the second Nigerian leader to die of natural causes while in office, as the late dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha, who died on June 8, 1998. Other Nigerian leaders who had died in office were Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa Maj.-Gen. Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi and Gen. Murtala Muhammed. They were killed during attempts to overthrow their governments in 1966 and 1976 respectively.

Presidential Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi, told The Associated Press that Yar’Adua died at 9pm on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, with his wife, Turai, at his side. Adeniyi, whose voice cracked with emotion as he spoke did not give a cause of death.

By virtue of Section 146 of the 1999 Constitution, Acting President Goodluck Jonathan automatically becomes the President. It reads, ”The Vice-President shall hold the office of President if the office of President becomes vacant by reason of death or resignation, impeachment, permanent incapacity or the removal of the President from office for any other reason in accordance with section 143 of this Constitution.”

THE PUNCH learnt that news of Yar‘Adua‘s death first filtered out shortly after he breathed his last when some presidential aides briefed Jonathan and the National Security Adviser, Lt.-Gen. Aliyu Gusau (retd.), about his death.

The Federal Governmment immediately declared today as a public holiday. It also declared seven days of mourning, during which flags will fly at half-mast.

Yar’Adua spent much of his time as the governor of Katsina State (1999-2007) battling a kidney-related ailment. But his supporters he claimed had recovered sufficiently to contest the 2007 presidential election, after he got a kidney transplant.

At a point during his tenure as governor, Yar‘Adua spent six months at a stretch in a German hospital. But not long after he won the presidential election and was inaugurated, his health failed and he had to be flown abroad on a few occasions for treatment.

Although the exact nature of Yar‘Adua‘s frequent illness was never truly known, as his medical trips abroad were always shrouded in secrecy, the Presidency gave an indication of the nature of the sickness after he was flown to Saudi Arabia on November 23, 2009 for medical treatment.

His personal physician, Dr. Salisu Banye, told newsmen on November 26 that Yar‘Adua was being treated for acute pericarditis, an inflamation of the membrane surrounding the heart.

However, Saharareporters, an online medium, had, in a series of reports, insisted that the President suffered from the terminal Churg Strauss syndrome.

Last November, he was admitted to the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where he spent 93 days before being flown back to Nigeria under the cover of darkness.

After his return on February 23, he was kept incommunicado at the Presidential Villa and was shielded from his deputy. In fact, in an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation last month, Jonathan said the President‘s family was shielding Yar‘Adua from him.

He said he had only been able to meet with the President‘s wife while attempts to see Yar‘Adua and assess his condition were rebuffed.

Due to the uncertainty that surrounded Yar‘Adua‘s medical condition, the National Assembly on February 9, 2010 passed a resolution declaring Jonathan as the Acting President.

The news of the President‘s death immediately spread like wildfire across the country, with many Nigerians expressing shock and grief at the 58-year-old President‘s demise. Also, various cable channels across the world broadcast news breaks of Yar’Adua’s death intermittently.

Reactions started pouring in within a few hours of his death. Kwara State governor Bukola Saraki, who is also the chairman of Nigerian Governors’ Forum, said, “As a Muslim, the first reaction is that everyone will pay the ultimate price and death will come when it will come. The passing on of the President at this point in time in our national history is not only tragic but devastating. It‘s indeed a colossal loss to the nation and Africa.”

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, in his tribute, wrote, “What passes for the Nigerian nation is nothing more than a tragic arena, and Yar‘Adua is only the latest tragic figure. The vampires, including those within his own family, turned him into a mere inert resource for their diabolical schemes.

“They have a reckoning with their conscience, assuming they know what the word means. One can only hope that, while mouthing sanctimonious platitudes such as ‘Power belongs to God,’ they have now learnt that the politics of Do-or-Die cannot guarantee who does and who dies. They must stop playing God. I pray for the repose of the soul of their latest, much abused innocent victim. Wole Soyinka.”

In his reaction, Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko described the President‘s transition as a sad loss to the nation. Mimiko, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Kolawole Olabisi, described the late President as an apostle of democracy, who maintained a firm belief in the Rule of Law and fairplay.

In his reaction, Kogi State Governor Ibrahim Idris said in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Richard Elesho, “We would like to keep our fingers crossed, taking into cognisance that the power of life and death are the in the hands of God. We have to accept it as the will of God. We condole with the family and pray God grants them the fortitude to bear the loss. The man suffered for so long. It’s indeed a big loss.”

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney feels his side need two 'big name' signings this summer in order to compete at the highest level next season.

Rooney and United will take on Stoke City on Sunday in a bid to topple Chelsea at the top of the Premier League, but the England international is already looking ahead to the next campaign.

“If we can bring in two big name players it would give us a good chance of getting the league back if Chelsea do win it," he told The People.

"If you look at the team in 1999 that won the Treble we had four forwards, all capable of scoring goals.

“Now there is me, [Dimitar] Berbatov and Michael Owen. There is Federico Macheda too, but if we can get one more top forward in it would give us the right balance.”.

However, Rooney, who has scored 26 league goals this term, has not given up all hope of United lifting a fourth consecutive league title.

He fully expects Wigan Ahtletic to give rivals Chelsea a tough time at Stamford Bridge, which in turn would allow Sir Alex Ferguson's men the opportunity to capture their 19th League title.

“I am sure the Wigan [Athletic] players will be trying their best," he added.

"They will have eight weeks’ holiday after Sunday’s game so I am sure they will want to end the season with a win. It is a good stage for them.

“They have a good young manager who has done well in keeping them up in his first season in charge and I am sure they won’t roll over.”

Rooney also revealed how he has relished the chance to lead United's frontline after the departures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.

The striker has thrived under the added responsibility and hopes to better his 34-goal tally next season.

“The manager [Sir Alex Ferguson] told me he would be playing me more up front and I knew that with [Cristiano] Ronaldo and [Carlos] Tevez leaving I would have to score more goals," he added.

"To score so many this time was fantastic - but it’s still not my best season. I once scored 76 in a season when I was 11.

"But it’s my best as a professional and I know the expectation will be there for me to do it again next season.”

In the mean time Rooney will be aiming to finish the season in style, with the faint hope of a Premier League title celebration to follow the full-time whistle at Old Trafford.

For long, the Mile-Two Badagry expressway has become a nightmare to both motorists and passers-by. This is because of the terror unleashed on people by criminals who have converted the major road into a haven. These criminals usually attack innocent and helpless commuters in their numbers from 7.30 pm daily.

Robbers who met their waterloo....

Ironically, these hoodlums carry out their nefarious activities very close to both the Police station and the nearby military barracks at Ojo.

Although some arrests have been made in recent times but that seemed not to have abated the trend as the robbers usually carry out their nefarious activities unhindered. They succeed in carrying out this devilish acts by capitalizing on the unending traffic congestion along the route, thereby inflicting wounds on their victims after dispossessing them of cash, mobile phones and other valuables.

Most times, they reportedly escape through the fence particularly, those of the military, thereby making it impossible for them to be rounded up even by other security agents.

Disturbed by the alarming trend, particularly as accusing fingers were being pointed at the Army whose cantonment these robbers sometimes run into for escape, military authorities decided to be on their guard. Their resolve paid off two weeks ago when five notorious robbers who have been terrorizing commuters on the highway met their waterloo.

End Of The Road

The six-man gang who thought it will be business as usual positioned themselves at a vantage point very close to the gate leading to Ojo cantonment, from Mile 2 end around 7 pm on the penultimate day, and started raiding commuters.

They reportedly shot sporadically to ward off intruders while the raid was going on. Soldiers at the main gate, according to eye witnesses, gave the robbers a hot chase on motorcycles and were able to catch up with them in a traffic. After the encounter which was described by eyewitnesses as ‘very hot’, two of the robbers were killed while three were completely incapacitated.

Army Reacts

Confirming the incident, spokesman of the 9 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Ikeja cantonment, Captain Daudu, explained that, “the robbers on getting to the Cantonment main gate, had the audacity to pull up and opened fire sporadically and robbed innocent civilians of their belongings.

Commuters from the bus stops adjoining the main gate and the one opposite took to their heels running helter skelter. Soldiers on duty at the gate could not attempt to confront the robbers immediately in order to avoid killing innocent civilians. The robbers got back on their motorcycles and made attempt to escape amidst the mayhem and brouhaha they caused. Luck however ran out of them as they got held in a traffic where they continued their shooting spree. Activities at the cantonment end of the abattoir pedestrian gate did not even deter them as they continued shooting sporadically and frantically into the air in a bid to enhance their escape.

“However, soldiers at the gate galvanized themselves into action and went in pursuit of the robbers. The point man, Makinta Suleiman took a bike quickly and on closing- up with the robbers, he opened fire, carefully taking his aim. There was a hot exchange of fire at the end of which five of the robbers were gunned down, two died while three were wounded and completely incapacitated. The shots were on target and neither hit any innocent citizen nor onlookers”.

Captain Dauda further noted that armed robbery attacks on the route are carried out regularly and these men of the under world sometimes use the cover of the barracks to escape stating that, “ Soldiers on the other hand, are to adhere strictly to the Rules of Engagement (ROE) at all times. This situation has made members of the public to suspects both soldiers and their wards as masterminds of such attacks. Luckily, our men have shown gallantry by dealing with them and we will not hesitate in taking such decisive action whenever the need arises”, he stated.

Police Take Over

Items recovered at the end of the shoot out, according to him, included, a loaded pistol, live cartridges, two operational motorcycles with registration numbers QE 619 AA and QV 983 LSD; mobile phones, digital camera, a wrist watch, two hand bags containing ladies wear, a calculator, the sum of N495 and CFA 7, 000 cash, WHO international certificate of vaccination, amongst others.

Captain Dauda said all the recovered items are suspected to have been robbed from their owners. He also informed that the suspects, their dead colleagues and items recovered were handed over to the Police Special Armed Robbery Squad.

Remember the Austrian Sex Beast Josef Fritzl ?

Well here is 9ja's own mini version Emma Obot .

An Ikeja Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday sentenced a randy father, who raped his two daughters, to seven years imprisonment with hard labour.

The Magistrate, O.A. Adedayo, ordered that Emmanuel Obott,46, be kept behind bars after finding him guilty on an eight-count charge of assault, battery, and rape.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the plea of Mr. Obott, who raped the girls aged 24 and 22, was not taken.

Enraged by Mr. Obott’s offence, the magistrate called out his family members to enquire whether he had a psychiatric problem. The family members, however, said he had no such ailment.

“It is the most atrocious of crime that could be meted out on one’s flesh and blood. The action of the accused will leave a psychological torture on the girls,” the magistrate said.

Mr. Adedayo advised the family to take the girls to a church for counselling.

The Prosecutor, Chris Takim, a police inspector, had earlier told the court that Mr. Obott, who claimed to be a clearing and forwarding agent, raped his daughters to satisfy his sexual urge.

“On many occasions, he threatened to kill the two girls if they failed to give in to his amorous advances,” Mr. Takim said.

He stated that the accused wilfully destroyed one of the girl’s skirt and blouse valued at N10, 000 in the process of raping her.

Mr. Takim said one of the girls became pregnant for Mr. Obott, who went ahead to obtain an abortion for her, while he flogged the other girl on many occasions for refusing his sexual advances.

Mr. Takim said the unsuspecting mother of the girls had packed out of the house, leaving them behind.

He said the offences, which were committed on April 15 at 3, Jadesola Street, Mende, Maryland, Ikeja, contravened Sections 86, 214, 230, 249, 355, 357 and 360 (d) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.

DETECTIVES at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command are current growing grey hairs over the gruesome murder of a lawyer, Mrs. Pamela Ebuzeme and two of her domestic aides in Karu, a satellite town in Abuja on Monday advertisement According to family sources, the late Mrs. Ebuzeme, who ran a travels agency in the city centre, left her home for the office on Monday, dropping her daughter in school along the way. At about 11.30 a.m. she was driven back home by three men who went straight into the duplex located at Karu Phase Two where they axed Mrs. Ebuzeme to death. The assailants also killed their first victim's cook in her kitchen. Thereafter, they lured the gateman into the sitting room, who, when he saw the gruesome scene, attempted to make good his escape by running upstairs but was also hacked down. Having ensured that the three were dead, the assailants reportedly sped away in the late lawyer's sports utility vehicle, locking the gate with a padlock on the outside. At the close of school, Mrs. Ebuzeme's daughter, who expected her mother to pick her up, waited for her to no end. After putting several calls to her mother's phone which went unanswered, the worried daughter later called her father, Mr. Ekene Ebuzeme, who later came at about 4.00p.m.to take her home. When they got the house, Mr. Ebuzeme, a Quantity Surveyor, blared his car horn for the security man to open gate to no avail and decided to open the gate by himself with his spare key. In the house, Mr. Ebuzeme fell on the gruesome scene of the triple homicide and raised the alarm, which attracted neighbours. Later some policemen from Karu Division arrived at the scene. When The Guardian visited the house yesterday, a team of policemen led by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 7, Mrs. Ivy Okoronkwo was there but declined to speak on the issue. But the Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT Command, Jimoh Moshood, confirmed the incident. His words: "I can confirm to you that the incident took place and we have started investigation with a view to arresting the perpetrators. We will inform you about the outcome of the investigation. We are determined to explore all avenues and the state CIC has commenced full investigation." Associate Parish Priest, St. Donald's Parish, Karu, Rev. Cyprian Imandeh, who was among the first set of sympathisers to arrive at the scene after the alarm raised by Ebuzeme, said it was "a case of gruesome murder." According to him, Ebuzeme and his late wife came to the church last Sunday and played significant roles in the conduct of the day's mass. He added: "They are very strong members of our church. Just last Sunday, we all met in the church where I conducted the mass. What I saw when we went to the house shocked me and I could not sleep when I got back home. This is a gruesome act but God will surely punish those involved."

Johnny Depp, Alive and No. 2 on Harris Poll

In "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," Davy Jones asks Johnny Depp's iconic character, Jack Sparrow, if he felt dead. Sparrow replies, as might Johnny Depp right now, "You have no idea."Despite untimely rumors to the contrary, not only is Johnny Depp very much alive, he's also just been named the runner-up in the much-ballyhooed Harris Poll. The poll, which measures public opinion on movie stars living and long gone, named Depp the second-most-loved Hollywood celebrity. Clint Eastwood came in first. It's been an interesting week for Depp. Over the weekend, an Internet rumor that the 46-year-old star had perished in a traffic accident in France gained traction on Twitter. Then today, the "Public Enemies" star learned that he finished second in the new Harris Poll to an actor who hasn't been in a movie in over a year. (Clint was last seen in his 2008 film "Gran Torino"; he directed - but does not appear in - this year's critical favorite, "Invictus.")John Wayne, who died in 1979 and hasn't been featured in a film since 1976, is the only actor to be ranked in the countdown every year since its inception in 1994. Wayne finished first in 1995, when he barely edged out this year's winner, Clint Eastwood.Denzel Washington, who has finished in the top spot on the poll for the last three consecutive years, fell to No. 3 this year.John Wayne aside, the Harris Poll has a history of honoring actors that haven't appeared in any recent films. Mel Gibson -- who before this upcoming weekend's release of "The Edge of Darkness" has not starred in a film since 2002's "Signs" -- topped the poll in 2003 and continuously ranked in the top 10 until 2006. Conversely, Meryl Streep, who has been nominated for 15 Academy Awards, made her first-ever appearance on the poll, finishing eighth. "The Blind Side" star Sandra Bullock was the highest ranking woman, finishing fourth. The top 10 in this year's "America's Favorite Movie Star" Harris Poll (with last year's rank in parenthesis) is as follows:1. 1. Clint Eastwood (2)2. 2. Johnny Depp (8)3. 3. Denzel Washington (1)4. 4. Sandra Bullock (not ranked)5. 5. Tom Hanks (7)6. 6. George Clooney (not ranked)7. 7. John Wayne (3)8. 8. Meryl Streep (not ranked)9. 9. Morgan Freeman (9)10. 10. Julia Roberts (6)
