The incident, which almost got out of hand also, consumed nine cars belonging to the bank and its members of staff, while the ATM machine was looted and set on fire.

The two persons were rushed to an undisclosed hospital, but unconfirmed reports said they later died of gun injuries. Trouble started when the policeman accidentally shot the taxi driver who had parked in front of the bank for his passenger to alight. The bullet also hit the female passenger, which led to her death; and this triggered the riot and attack on the bank.

Lorry load of policemen and soldiers were later brought to control the situation..

The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, John Haruna told journalists that “the policeman at the centre of the crisis has been taken into custody,” stressing that there were certain conditions that must be met before firearms could be used, but these conditions were not satisfied before the policeman fired his weapon.” The Mpape Divisional Police Officer, Imran Balarabe said he was at home when the incident happened but was informed by the Divisional Crime Officer via a phone call around 8 am. “I quickly dashed to the scene, only to see hundreds of angry people attacking the bank and attempting to break into the banking hall.” He said. The DPO said the information he had was that the gun went off when the policeman hit his rifle against the car to urge the taxi driver not to park in front of the bank, adding that the rifle may not have been cocked. However, Igwebuike Ugwueze, an artisan whose workshop is directly opposite the bank explained to NEXT that he heard a gunshot and saw the policeman speeding away as he was hotly chased by the mob.

“The policemen escaped into a bus which took off, then the people mobilised and started stoning the bank before setting it on fire. I learnt that some people suffered gunshot wounds, but I didn’t see any dead bodies,” he said.

NEXT observed money bands littering the frontage of the bank as well as expended shells on the ground.

Who lodged N9.3bn into my bank account?

WHAT has remained a puzzle to Ade-yemi Durojaye, a Higher National Diploma (HND) 1 Student of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, is the identity of the person who lodged N9,309,019,869.91k into his savings account.

More puzzling, however, is the swift manner with which the money disappeared from his account without any trace of it in his statement of account..

According to the civil engineering student, he had a little over N3,000 in his account and was going home for the weekend on Friday, 13th August, 2010.

So, Durojaye went to the First Bank of Nigeria Plc, Ibadan Poly 4 branch, with the intention of cashing N2,000.

It was about 6.57 p.m., so, he had to use his Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card.

"I was perlexed when I printed out my receipt and saw the balance in my account. I became weak and tired. Nine billion, three hundred and nine million, nineteen thousand, eight hundred and sixty nine naira, ninety one kobo. How did this amount get into my account?" I wondered.

To authenticate the ATM's claim, he withdrew N20,000 from the amount. But on Saturday when he went to check his account again, the money had disappeared from his account..

He, however, went to report the incident to the manager of the bank, a woman, on Monday morning.

He declared his intention to return the N20,000 he withdrew from the amount. The bank manager gave her approval but collected the triplicate copy of the teller which Durojaye used to lodge the money into his account.

Durojaye later collected his statement of account, which had no record of the over N9 billion in it.

Although it has the record of the N20,000 which he refunded, that had also disappeared from his account, leaving a balance of a little over N1,000.

When the Nigerian Tribune visited the branch on Wednesday, the manager was said to be on leave while the Branch Operation Manager, claimed ignorance of the incident and referred the Nigerian Tribune to the bank's head office in Lagos.

Fresh scandal rocks Bank PHB • 2 Directors bleed bank as losses continue to rise in the latest Charge and Bail versions of Bank MDS .

If indications from CBN-managed Bank PHB are anything to go by, then the bank may not emerge from its current financial mess in a hurry even as the interim tenure of embattled Managing Director; Mr Cyril Chukwumah,
expires next year. Documents released to the Daily Sun by a group of recently- retrenched workers of the bank may have inadvertently opened another can of worms on the embattled bank.

According to the documents, the ex-workers are alleging that Chukwumah may have collected almost $100,000 in estacode having spent close to 50 days abroad since assuming office some six months ago as the Chief Executive. They say this is attributable to the MD’s choice of travelling.

The fresh scandal is rubbing off on Chukwumah, whose sacked ex-staff are now claiming has cumulatively disengaged about 1,000 professional employees in February, in what he claimed would save the bank N4.5 billion. They alleged Chukwumah travelled abroad for 50 days (including 18 days of vacation after 72 days in office), after just five months as MD. At a daily estacode (per diem) rate of $3,000 for MD as stipulated in Bank PHB’s policy, Chukwumah has so far collected a whopping $96,000, excluding the controversial $120,000 leave allowance he was alleged to have collected in December 2009. This becomes mind-boggling when it was revealed that the tenure of the embattled Managing Director expires next year..

Documents obtained by Daily Sun show that he travelled twice in November 2009 to Ghana and London; went on vacation in December/January; travelled to London in January. In February, he travelled again to UK, while so far, this month he has already travelled to London and The Gambia.

Curiously, a new dimension has been added to the newfound luxury of the CEO, as he has entered into an alliance with another director of the bank, who ironically complained to the CBN Governor in December 2009, that the MD was ignoring the board in running the bank. The bank, on the CEO’s approval, now bears the cost of the director’s travel to Boston, Massachusets, USA, on first class ticket, ostensibly in search of core investors. However, his wife also lives in Boston.

The director has also travelled on first class tickets with the Managing Director to The Gambia, London, South Africa, and Freetown, also in search of core investors. Ironically, the director is not on the board of any of the bank’s subsidiaries – Bank PHB, UK; Bank PHB, Gambia; Bank PHB, Liberia; Bank PHB, Sierra Leone; and Bank PHB, Uganda.

Meanwhile, as the MD and the said director embarked on a free-spending lifestyle of luxury and self-enrichment, the bank that the CBN Governor said would be better managed under Chukwumah, continues to post losses. Available records from the bank’s monthly returns to CBN show that it incurred a loss of N3.8 billion in January 2010.

It would be recalled that the nation’s banking public was shocked in January when it was revealed in the media that Chukwumah, who had just spent 72 days as MD, as at December 18, 2009, paid himself an off-shore leave allowance of $120,000, a payment he was entitled to, only after one year in office. In an effort to ameliorate the gravity of his alleged infraction, he explained that he actually cut down the allowance from $450,000 per annum, which the former CEO usually collected, only for it to be revealed that the former CEO, Francis Atuche, never collected any leave allowance in his four-year tenure (2006-2009) as MD.

Not done with the concern for his personal welfare, Chukwumah, also in January reviewed staff emolument by cutting salaries of staff as much as 35%, while cutting his by a mere 18%, before pushing about 1,000 professionals to the labour market in February.

N1.6m ATM fraud: Customer drags bank to court

Yejide Gbenga-Ogundare and Omankhanlen Odidison report the plight of a bank customer who alleged that fraudsters stole money from his account with Automated Teller Machine while the bank claimed innocence. advertisement THE increasing cases of fraud perpetrated through automated Teller Machine (ATM) have been causing sleepless nights to virtually all security outfits in Nigeria, bank executives, and especially ordinary Nigerians, operating accounts in various banks. All efforts towards eradicating this crime by banks and security personnel in the country have proved abortive while the problem has defied all solutions proffered by professionals. As a result, ATM fraud continues to thrive in the country. Another disturbing aspect of ATM fraud is the allegation that it could not be possible without the connivance of insiders in the banks, but the link has so far not been authenticated. Also, many syndicates said to have been apprehended by security operatives never paid back what they stole. Many victims have, as a result of this, taken ATM fraud as personal issue to be resolved by individuals involved in the way they deem fit. Akintayo Afolabi Akinbode is one of those victims who had decided to take legal action as a means of recouping his stolen money. What was his solution? He decided to go to court, based on his belief that the bank cannot claim innocence of the fraud perpetrated on his account which he operates in one of its branches in the state. Meanwhile, the lingering altercation between Mr. Akintayo Afolabi Akinbode and Sterling Bank over the unauthorized withdrawals from his account via ATM, has continued unabated with the bank keeping mum. Efforts by the Nigerian Tribune to get the bank’s officials to react to this development proved abortive as they refused to comment. Narrating his ordeal to the Nigerian Tribune in Lagos, Akintayo said, a total sum of N1,630, 300.00, was withdrawn from his account No – 226/20449/110 domiciled in Ikoyi branch of the bank between 18th May and 26th June this year, without his knowledge or notice, stating that efforts to get the bank to redress the anomaly proved abortive. According to him, he operated two accounts at the Ikoyi branch of the bank and was last year issued two ATM cards, though he did not request for any, stating that when he tried to activate the cards, the activation process failed, and he immediately notified the bank. He said that since the cards could not be activated last year, he had neither reactivated nor used it to make withdrawals from his accounts. He further explained that any withdrawal of money that were in excess of N100, 000 from his account were always confirmed through a phone call to him or his wife by one Mrs. Sherifat Adediwin, through mobile phone number 08025019938 or 01- 7301077 before such payments were made. He is still wondering how the said amount was withdrawn from his account without his knowledge. Akintayo, who is already in court, had filed a writ of summons against his bank, Sterling Bank Plc, at the High Court of Lagos State through his counsel, Olaleke Akinloye Esq. to demand for some declarations and orders. He is asking for a declaration of the court that the alleged activation of the ATM card by his bank without his knowledge or notice is illegal; a declaration that all the alleged withdrawals made with the said ATM card between 18th May 2009 and 26th June 2009, without his notice, were illegal; and a declaration that the bank owed him care, by virtue of customer/bank relationship. The bank, he said, had breached the said care by allowing and permitting the usage of an ATM card for withdrawals of his money without his knowledge. Also, he is asking for an order mandating the bank to refund N1, 630, 300, being the total sum of money withdrawn from his account, with 10 per cent interest per month, beginning from 26th June until the money is fully refunded. He is also asking for the sum of N5,000,000 as damages, and N500, 000 as cost of legal action. Akintayo said following the discovery of the unauthorised withdrawals with the ATM card on 26th June this year, he immediately notified his bank that the said ATM card be hot-listed or deactivated, and further transactions on the account be suspended, and immediate commencement of investigations to unravel the masterminds of the said withdrawals be conducted. He, however, claimed that the bank refused to honour his instruction concerning his account. As a result, after the day, a total sum of N75, 000 was still withdrawn from his account with an ATM card. The bank, on their part, decided to write back to Akintayo, denying liability for the unauthorised withdrawals. In his final resolve, Akintayo, through his counsel, claimed that the almost daily withdrawals from his account with ATM, without notifying him, was planned, hatched and executed by his bank, or in collusion with other persons

The sacked Those affected were Francis Atuche, Charles Ojo, and Ike Oraekwotu, who were relieved of their positions as managing directors/ chief executives of Bank PHB, Springbank and Equatorial Trust Bank. They are to be replaced by Cyril Chukwumah for Bank PHB Plc; Sola Ayodele for Spring Bank Plc. and G.O. Folayan for Equitorial Trust Bank Plc. Wema Bank was also found to be in a grave situation, however the CBN noted that the bank came under a new ownership and management in June 2009, which “took over a bank already in a grave situation and should not be held responsible for the present condition of the bank.” The nine banks that survived the CBN litmus test, according to its corporate affairs head, Mohammed Abdullahi, include Access Bank Plc, Citibank Nigeria Limited, Ecobank Nigeria Plc, Fidelity Bank Plc, First City Monument Bank Plc, Skye Bank Plc, Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc, Standard Chartered Bank Limited and Zenith Bank Plc. Advertisenent watch f.re.eeNollywood utube4naija movies Dressed to Kill The rising complaints of abuse and sexual harassment in the banking industry, traceable to the emergence of Nigeria's new generation banks, has continued to cause concern about questionable labour practices allowed to thrive in the sector due to the glut in the labour market. The burden of banks' seemingly insatiable desire for deposits experts said is carried largely by female bank officials -who are subjected to various forms of threats, intimidations, queries and demotions, if they are unable to meet the monthly targets. Meeting the target According to a female bank staff, "some banks, attach the payment of the salaries of marketers to performance on their given targets. If the target is not met, a percentage of their salary may be deducted and their promotion and other bonuses delayed. I have a friend who has just lost his job because he didn't meet his target. The management called him and advised him to resign or get sacked." According to her, some female bankers are recruited with clear instructions to generate between N150 million and N300 million within 3-6 months, while those in the operations department have specified targets, like N1 million per month, two savings accounts in one week or three in a month, depending on the branch head and stability of the branch. No bank has publicly acknowledged the truth of these allegations though. According to the CBN governor, Lamido Sanusi, in his maiden meeting with the House of Representatives committee on banking and currency in Abuja, last month, "Yes this thing is here, although in my over 20 years in the banking industry, I have not experienced where a lady was asked to go and sleep with a man to get deposit. I am sure no bank will say that." Mind games According to a female marketer at a top bank, the ultimate decision lies with the marketers as individuals. "It has not been easy, but I am getting used to it. Sometimes, in the process of persuading customers to open accounts, I realise that I am already crying, and then, they are moved and just open the account with much more money than I was even asking for. Sometimes, with just two or three people opening accounts, you can cover your targets for that period. "Of course, you may not always be lucky, because things don't always turn out that way, but once in a while, we meet decent men, who understand our plight and help us," she explained. Taking action The acting secretary general of the Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance, and Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI), O.P. Orere, explained that the association has never been in support of unrealistic targeting. According to him, "This institution has never supported this. We have frowned at, condemned and castigated it through our various publications and press releases. "There is nothing we can do. At a time, some of our members complained that condoms were being distributed to them at their offices. It is a fight that has been in existence for a long time. In my 25 years of working in the bank, we didn't have targets." He puts the blame on the new generation banks. "These banks have 25 billion with the CBN which they do not have free access to, but they need money to carry out their day to day transactions. We have advised them that they can get this by introducing good products to the public and not exposing these ladies to various vices. It is against the International Labour Organisation's decent work agenda, which Nigeria is a member of." Investigations however reveal that an arm of the ASSBIFI is sponsoring a bill at the National Assembly to check these ‘outrageous' practices.

From Iyabo Lawal (Ibadan) and Bodunrin Beckley, (Keffi) Like a blockbuster action movie from hollywood ! Assault on Banks 13 ! IT was a black day in Ogbomoso yesterday as gunmen invaded three commercial banks in the city and unleashed mayhem on officials, customers and passers-by. At the end of the operation, which took place simultaneously in the affected financial institutions, seven persons, including three of the robbers were killed, while others sustained various degrees of injuries. Also, five persons were yesterday feared killed in a ghastly accident at Gidan Waje village on Keffi-Akwanga road in Nasarawa State. The robbers, according to sources had arrived at the Apake area of Ogbomoso where the banks are located in five vehicles, including three 18-seater passenger buses, a Toyota Camry and another KIA car, armed with sophisticated weapons. They were said to number about 60. On their arrival, the gun-wielding robbers took position in the three banks after overpowering the security men stationed within the banks' premises. While the shoot-out lasted, a cleaner and a top official of one of the banks were shot dead. Three of the robbers also died in the process. Two persons were hit by stray bullets, while the robbers were trying to escape as they shot sporadically into the air, causing pandemonium in the city. A police patrol van, which was cited by the robbers while trying to find an escape route was also not spared as it was riddled with bullets, though it could not be ascertained whether anyone was injured in the process. The development forced other banks in the city to hurriedly close for business while traders and markets also hurriedly locked their stalls. Commissioner of Police, Baba Bolanta, led a special rescue team to Ogbomoso while mobile policemen and an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) were immediately deployed to the town. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Bisi Okuwobi, who expressed sadness over the incident, appealed to well meaning Nigerians to support the police in the area of equipment, saying if an APC was stationed in Ogbomoso, the robbers would not have had a field day. Those feared killed in the auto crash involving three vehicles, include the chairman of the Senior Staff Association (SSANU) at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Bala Angbashim, his wife and son. Another occupant of the third vehicle was badly wounded and had to be rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi by men of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). Commander of the Road Safety Unit in Keffi, Solomon Agure, told The Guardian that the mishap occurred when one of the vehicles tried to overtake and in the process hit an incoming vehicle.
