Rapes (6)

The heart of man is desperately wicked.” This Biblical expression came to the fore once again recently as a 16-year-old boy (name withheld) defiled a nine-year-old school girl, who was on her way home from school in company with her friends at Adekile area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

That fateful Friday, Victoria, and two other friends, Mariam and Rukayat, dropped their school bags on their playing field as they played a ‘hide and seek’ game.

The children were enjoying their game until the suspect came like a wolf to attack them. But his approach did not suggest that he contemplated any evil. He took the girls’ bags and left for the mission house, where he lives with his mother and elder brother.

Since he was home alone, he was able to hatch his plan without any hindrance. The girls ran down to the suspect’s house, asking for their bags. The youngster insisted that one of them must come into the room to collect the bags.

But the girls would not play along easily. They insisted that he should bring out their bags so that they could go home. As the plea degenerated into confusion, the boy released two bags. But he still held Victoria’s bag.

The hapless young girl begged and prayed, but his assailant would not let go. She pleaded that her parents would be mad at her if she got home late, but all the pleas fell on the suspect’s deaf ears. At last, she obliged and went into the room with him..

It was already too late before help came her way. The desperate boy had his way as the girl struggled and writhed in pain. She was drenched with blood. Victoria was deflowered at a tender age of nine by the young rapist. As she walked out of the mission house sobbing, a woman walked up to her. She recounted her story to the woman with tears rolling down her cheeks. The woman eventually took her home and broke the sad news to her parents.

Nothing could console the poor girl and her family. They reported the case at the Agugu Police Station and the suspect was arrested. He was later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, Ibadan, for further interrogation.

The doctor’s report indicated that the victim suffered some lacerations on her private part and her hymen was broken. The report reads, “Patient brought in by her parents. Hymen just broken – newly bleeding. There are areas of abrasions. She appeared dusty and anxious. Sticky substance found around her private part.”

The boy confessed that he lured the girl into the room in order to rape her. He, however, said he could not penetrate the minor and therefore, ejaculated on her waist. He said, “It was the work of the devil; the devil used me.”

Etim Canice Okon, a naval officer, is trying to convince the Nigerian police in Calabar that he had not been raping his daughter, but cleaning her up when her cry attracted people to his house, leading to his arrest.

The 48-year-old officer, who said it was not unusual for babies to cry at that age, allegedly started sleeping with the toddler when she was just one year old and had previously threatened to send his wife packing should she report his action to family members or members of the public.

But news of the alleged assault eventually got out and a representative of the federation of women lawyers in Cross River State, Rosemary Onah, petitioned the state commissioner of Police and commissioner of Women Affairs on behalf of Mrs Etim, the victims’ mother over the rape.

Confirming the arrest of the victim, the state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Baba Ahmed said the suspect had raped his daughter about four times before the act became public, stressing that the incident started when the victim was only one year old.

“Raping of minors, especially one year old girls, is becoming rampant here. Maybe it is done for ritual purposes; if not, how come a man of almost 50 years of age will defile his daughter.

This is unbelievable and abominable”, Mr Ahmed said..

Prepared for court

He said the suspect will not be released until investigation is completed, adding that he will be taken to court as soon as possible to obtain a court order to remanded him in police custody pending further investigations.

“We are not going to release him on bail because the offence is criminal,” he said, “We will take him to court for court order which will enable us remand him in our custody for further investigations.” The Police Commissioner said the family has conducted medical examination on the baby, which confirmed that she had been raped several times.

“Our findings revealed that before now, the father of the victim was living together with the wife and six other children made up of five boys and a girl who is the victim of rape.

The poor girl happens to be his last born. This girl is likely to grow up with this trauma. How will she get over it?” he said.

Meanwhile, the mother and other children have relocated to an undisclosed apartment in Calabar where they are fending for themselves.

A 27-year-old man has been arrested by the Oyo State Police Command for allegedly robbing a family and raping three sisters.
The suspect, identified simply as Segun, was said to have invaded his victims' residence in Orogun area of Ibadan, the state capital with a member of his robbery gang currently at large.

The two were said to have forcibly entered the house at about 5am on June 24, 2010, armed with cutlasses.

Having gained access into the apartment, the suspects were said to have robbed the family of valuables including money, telephone handsets and jewellery among other items.

Unknown to the suspects, however, while the operation was going on, some neighbours who were aware of the incident quickly alerted the command headquarters to the incident and a patrol team was dispatched to the scene.

Obviously unaware of the arrival of policemen, Segun, not satisfied with their loot, reportedly started raping the three daughters of the family one after the other.

He reportedly raped the ladies - a set of twins and their sister- in the full glare of their helpless parents.

By the time the policemen led by the Divisional Crime Officer, Mr. Busari Kabiru, arrived on the scene, they met the suspect pants down on one of the ladies while his accomplice quickly fled from the scene. He was arrested immediately..

Confirming the incident, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adisa Bolanta, said that efforts were on to track down Segun's fleeing accomplice.

Bolanta assured residents of the state that his command would leave no stone unturned to ensure safety of lives and property.

He further urged members of the public to assist the police in fighting crime by reporting suspicious movements around their areas at the nearest police station.

UYO—An expatriate working for one of the multinational companies in Akwa Ibom State is currently being detained for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl.
This comes as another expatriate working with Julius Berger Plc also allegedly crushed a man and his wife to death, after he lost control of his vehicle, veered off the road, fell some electric poles and plunged into a ditch.

It was learnt that the family of the girl that was raped chose to settle out of court in the interest of the future of the girl.

On the killing of the couple, the expatriate, (names withheld) who is supervising the ongoing project at Government House Uyo, the state capital, is alleged to have gone behind the wheels under the heavy influence of alcohol as early as 6.15a.m.

Before veering off his lane, he was said to have run over the two bread winners who were returning home on their motor cycle, killing the husband on the spot, while the wife later gave up the ghost in the hospital.

The expatriate staff, who sustained serious injuries, Vanguard gathered, was quickly rescued from the Hilux Pickup Van with registration number XL 352 ABJ and pool number B3920, while the victims were left bleeding profusely for almost one hour before angry eye witnesses forced another Julius Berger driver who was at the scene to move the bodies to the hospital.

An eye witness said the woman would have survived if she had been\ rushed to the hospital at the time the accident took place, pleading that government should provide such services, since most times accident victims were left in pain for long hours by the members of the public for fear of being arrested by the police when they attempt to render rescue services..

The company Public Relations Officer in Uyo, Mrs. Ndifreke Ukochio, said they could only rely on police report since the incident was merely an accident, adding that she did not know the name of the expatriate staff that killed the couple.

Mrs. Ukochio said she made a brief stop while going to work at the scene of the incident, only to discover that it was one of their expatriate staff that was involved.

When Vanguard contacted the ‘B’ division of Ewet Housing Police Station, it was discovered that the deceased was a constable who had just returned from the police Corporal Course. It was also discovered that while the police went to the hospital where the expatriate was rushed after the accident, he had been moved out and flown to Abuja where the company’s hospital is located.

A 29- year old man, Ademola Arogboto is in police custody for allegedly defiling his landlady’s 11 years old daughter..

The victim, a primary six pupil, lives in the same compound with the suspect at a suburb at Iju road.

Mr. Arogboto, who had just moved into his one room apartment on Monday, allegedly asked his landlady’s daughter to help him run errands. The suspect allegedly took advantage of the victim, about 12.30pm on Wednesday.

Lured in

Mr. Arogboto, suspecting that no one was around, allegedly dragged the girl on his bed, locked the door and had sex with her.

The suspect was however arrested when the victim’s elder brother suspected foul play and swooped on him while he was having sex with the girl. The victim’s mother, Bose Ige, said he regrets renting the apartment to the suspect.

“This man who did this terrible thing to my daughter just moved into my house three days ago,” she said. “He told me that he does not know anywhere and that my daughter should help him run errands. On Wednesday, he told my daughter to help him buy rice to eat; I did not suspect any bad thing, so after waiting for sometime without seeing her, I asked her brother to go and look for her. When he got to his room, he knocked but no response, he kept banging the door, but no response, that was how he went round and peeked through the window and saw him have sex with my daughter.”

Mrs Ige said he rushed her daughter to the hospital for treatment and called the police to arrest the suspect. “We took her to the hospital, and it was confirmed that he had sex with her, the doctors are still treating her. I pray that nothing happens to my daughter,” she lamented.

‘She looked advanced’

Mr. Arogboto, a 200 level dropout from the University of Lagos, confessed to the crime. He however said that the victim lured him to have sex with her.

“I did not send her on errand, she come into my room by herself and she looked advanced, like somebody who is mature,” he said. “She was the one who put her hand around me, so when I see that, I carried her on my chest and pull my trouser so that was how I had sex with her. I did not release into her, I released into a tissue paper; but all the time I had sex with her, she did not cry, in short, she behaved like an advanced mature person.”

Police spokesperson Frank Mba said the girl is a minor, and therefore cannot give consent to sexual intercourse.

“According to Section 218 of the criminal code, the girl, cannot give consent and what this man is saying is her “consent” is not recognised in law,” he said. “Parents and wards should befriend their children so that they can feel free to tell them anything that is happening to them.

“They should constantly monitor their girls, and people around them, because such thing is done by people who are close to the family, neighbours, uncles, drivers, people who the parents of the girl repose trust in, will turn round and rape, or defile their daughters. If found guilty of the offence, the suspect is liable to life imprisonment.”
