After 16 years, couple is blessed with twins • I spent N10m to have a child – Man
From OKEY SAMPSON, Aba

Wednesday, February 16, 2011

When Chief Rems Uchendu (a.k.a Agunechemba 1 of Aba), set out to exit bachelorhood in 1992, he had in mind like any other man with strong Igbo blood in his veins to start having babies within the next nine months.

He was convinced that the parcel he picked was well loaded and among the best and, therefore, had no need to worry about.

But wishes, they say, are not horses. For 16 tortuous years, Uchedu lived with her wife, Judith, but without a single child to show for the marriage. Chief Uchendu did his traditional marriage on June 6, 1992 and church wedding on November 28 of the same year.

As the problem lingers, Uchendu who hails from Ibeme Ugiri in Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State set out in search for a solution.

This took the husband and wife from one place to another; from one medical prescription to another, yet there was no headway.

In a chat with Daily Sun, Uchendu said: “I did everything humanly possible for 16 years to see if I could get a child, but there was no way. I spent more than N10 million in the search for just a child, in fact, all the money I made within that period was all spent, and still there was no solution.”

But one thing that the couple had going for them was their absolute faith in what God can do.

“After sometime, we took a decision that we would not go to any where again in search of a child; if God would not give us one, we will accept His wish after all we’ve tried as human beings. After that decision, we stopped all medications towards this direction and hoped wholly on God”, Uchendu said.

Uchendu, a Christian of the Catholic fold, decided to put his faith in God in practice as he went into knighthood and was conferred with the Knight of Saint John International (KSJ).

Two spectacular things happened during the period that preceded his initiation into knighthood in September 2007.

First, his wife who although may have disagreed with him on some issues, but definitely not on the issue of child bearing, vehemently opposed his idea of going into knighthood.

Her reason, according to Uchendu, was that, “when one is initiated into knighthood, he would not marry two wives. She was afraid my family would accuse her of luring me into knighthood in order to stop me from marrying another woman who would bear me children. I told her to relax because all the while, she never knew there was no pressure from my family to marry another woman because we are a Christian family”.

The second and more spectacular thing which happened within the period was that as Uchendu was attending programmes preparatory to his knighthood initiation, his wife became pregnant and they never knew.

His words: “As I was attending programmes preceding my initiation into the knighthood, I never knew my wife had taken in. When it became evident, I asked her to go for scanning tests and the results showed he had only one child in her womb and we prepared for her delivery based on the result of the scanning.

“But God in His infinite way of doing things, my wife in February 2008, delivered twins (a boy and a girl). One came out at exactly 5.00p.m. on that fateful day and the second followed 30 minutes later,” he said.

As the twins, Prince Udochukwu and Princeness Adaeze were delivered, Uchendu said that at first he was confused, but later felt relieved.

He said everything around him changed as his house on School Road, Aba became a tourist site of sorts. People from far and near came to see for themselves if actually his wife given birth. Even some American doctors who attended to them in Nigeria when they were in search of the fruit of the womb, joined in the ecstasy of that moment. They went further to send gift items from America for the upkeep of the kids.

In the 16 years of waiting, wherever the couple went for medical tests, they were always said to be okay. But this never stopped people from cajoling them until it got to the point where they were in turn praised..

“Although within the 16 years of waiting, people said all sorts of things against us, but we were not bothered because we knew that one day, God will answer our prayers. After sometime, those who were cajoling and calling us all sorts of names, then turned around to praise and call us the best couple around,” he said.

Recently, the twins clocked two years and their father who had at their delivery presented a cow in fulfillment of the vow he made to God, treated them to a lavish birthday ceremony.

But like Oliver Twist, Chief Uchendu who asked for just a child, but God gave him two at once, is asking for more children, even as he said “at the same time, I will be contented with the twins if that’s all God has for me.”

12166300485?profile=originalChannel 4 News learns that the head of a London-based evangelical church with 3,000 congregation members has been charged with indecent assault on a child under 16.

The pastor of a global evangelical movement based in the UK has been charged with sex offences against former members of his congregation.

Dr Albert Odulele who runs Glory House International in London is to appear in court next week. One charge alleges indecent assault of a child under the age of 16.

Dr Odulele, who is 47 years old, is a major figure in the word of evangelism. His church, based in east London, says it has a congregation of 3,000, but he has many more followers around the world through appearances at international evangelic conferences, on religious TV programmes and videos on YouTube.

Registered charity

The church has been a registered charity for 18 years and turns over £2million a year. He was arrested last summer by the Metropolitan Police's Major Child Abuse Investigation Unit.

Channel Four News has learned that he has been charged with two offences - an indecent assault of an under 16 year old, and the sexual assault of another male teenager. This programme understands the alleged assaults took place in 2003 and 2004...

The Evangelical Alliance - the group that represents evangelical churches in the UK - gave this statement: "Our overriding concern here is for the care, protection and welfare of children and young people, so it is imperative that all churches adopt safe practice in order to protect children and young people from abuse - and staff members and volunteers from the possibility of false accusation."

Channel 4 News made several attempts to contact Doctor Odulele and get reaction from Glory House International. They have not responded, though we are told that he is on "annual leave" at the moment. He is due to appear at Bexley Magistrates Court on Monday.

The heart of man is desperately wicked.” This Biblical expression came to the fore once again recently as a 16-year-old boy (name withheld) defiled a nine-year-old school girl, who was on her way home from school in company with her friends at Adekile area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

That fateful Friday, Victoria, and two other friends, Mariam and Rukayat, dropped their school bags on their playing field as they played a ‘hide and seek’ game.

The children were enjoying their game until the suspect came like a wolf to attack them. But his approach did not suggest that he contemplated any evil. He took the girls’ bags and left for the mission house, where he lives with his mother and elder brother.

Since he was home alone, he was able to hatch his plan without any hindrance. The girls ran down to the suspect’s house, asking for their bags. The youngster insisted that one of them must come into the room to collect the bags.

But the girls would not play along easily. They insisted that he should bring out their bags so that they could go home. As the plea degenerated into confusion, the boy released two bags. But he still held Victoria’s bag.

The hapless young girl begged and prayed, but his assailant would not let go. She pleaded that her parents would be mad at her if she got home late, but all the pleas fell on the suspect’s deaf ears. At last, she obliged and went into the room with him..

It was already too late before help came her way. The desperate boy had his way as the girl struggled and writhed in pain. She was drenched with blood. Victoria was deflowered at a tender age of nine by the young rapist. As she walked out of the mission house sobbing, a woman walked up to her. She recounted her story to the woman with tears rolling down her cheeks. The woman eventually took her home and broke the sad news to her parents.

Nothing could console the poor girl and her family. They reported the case at the Agugu Police Station and the suspect was arrested. He was later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, Ibadan, for further interrogation.

The doctor’s report indicated that the victim suffered some lacerations on her private part and her hymen was broken. The report reads, “Patient brought in by her parents. Hymen just broken – newly bleeding. There are areas of abrasions. She appeared dusty and anxious. Sticky substance found around her private part.”

The boy confessed that he lured the girl into the room in order to rape her. He, however, said he could not penetrate the minor and therefore, ejaculated on her waist. He said, “It was the work of the devil; the devil used me.”

NDLEA boss, bags 16 years imprisonment

A Lagos High Court, on Monday, sentenced a former boss of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Bello Lafiaji, to 16 years imprisonment for abuse of office and conspiracy. His erstwhile special assistant, Usman Amali, also bagged a seven-year jail term.

The Independent Corrupt Practices Commission and other related matters (ICPC) had arraigned both Mr. Lafiaji and Mr. Amali in 2008, on a seven-count charge of abuse of office and conspiracy. The Anti-graft body said the duo had in November 2005 conspired and unlawfully received 164,300 euros from a drug suspect identified as Ikenna Onochie, to secure Mr. Onochie’s release from NDLEA’s custody. The two defendants had severally pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The money, which was also alleged to ensure the release of the suspect’s impounded cars, was part of the exhibits seized from the suspect’s house while he was arrested for being in possession of 3.2kg of cocaine and heroin.

Mr. Onochie is currently facing trial for drug trafficking at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi.

Ruling on the judgment, Olusola Williams, (a Justice of the Federal High Court) held that the prosecution had successfully proved that the release of Mr. Onochie from custody was irregular.

“The court finds the two defendants guilty for receiving money for personal benefits. The prosecution has proved its case and they are as guilty as charged. The court holds that there was an agreement between the defendants to do what they did,” she declared.

Mrs. Williams, while commending the former NDLEA boss for his role in uplifting the standard of the anti-drug agency, said he allowed his reputation to be tarnished because of personal gains.

As for the second defendant, the special assistant to Mr. Lafiaji, the judge said, “he appeared to have followed his master blindly,” she said.

Mrs. Williams said she found the defendants guilty in six of the seven-count-charge and ruled that “Lafiaji is sentenced on counts one to four for four years each, while for counts six and seven, he is sentenced to two years each.”

Also, according to her ruling, “Amali is sentenced to two years each on counts one and two, while on counts three, four and six, he is sentenced to one year each”, Williams concluded. The sentences are to run concurrently.”

Reps to review NYSC billNational NewsNov 16, 2009

Reps to review NYSC billNational NewsNov 16, 2009 By Ola Ajayi THE House of Representatives is set to review the bill that established the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme to make life more bearable for corps members across the country. This was disclosed by members of the House Committee on Youth who were on inspection tour of facilities at the permanent site of the NYSC in Iseyin yesterday. The committee which was led by Nasiru Sule Garo from Kano State, inspected the facilities on ground to assess if the N3billion budgeted for the scheme in the 2009 fiscal year was judiciously spent or not. Garo said it was the responsibility of the Oyo State Government to provide accommodation for the corps members and that it should try and complete the work it started on time so that the corps members could move to the site. Though, he accepted that the job done so far was a quality one, he said it was moving at a snail’s speed. He said, “we have inspected the project and we feel the state government is doing a good job. But, we were here last year and we can see now that the work is going slowly. We ask the state government to continue with the standard and to expedite the project so as to get hotel accommodation for our youths”. The State Director, NYSC, Mr Gabriel Ibe, complained that the scheme is suffering from acute shortage of funds and facilities. “We have insufficient facilities. The hostels we use now are classrooms and we had to pack our things before the students arrive. NYSC could be funded better. Whatever fund that is accrued to the scheme should come directly. Oyo State Government has been living up to its responsibility. Out of five operational vehicles we have, it provided four for us”, he said.

Girl, 16 Survives Ritual Attack

Flogged, tied up and locked up for 72 hours The 2008 Christmas week would for a long time, remain fresh in the memory of Miss Ngozi Eneremadu . The 27th day of December , 2008 to be precise, has been burnt into her mind with blood and pain. Ngozi Eneremadu's woes started on the 24th day of December, 2008 when she was invited to the house of one Mr. Chimeremeze Chigaemezu, the proprietor of Chinbest Guest House in Umuguma Housing Estate in Owerri West LGA, by one Miss Vivian, a relative of the said Chimeremeze who was supposed to be Miss Eneremadu’s friend. On getting to the place, Ngozi Eneremadu was told that they needed her to assist them in the Christmas sales at the Chinbest Guest House. Eneremdu, being a young, unemployed school leaver, accepted the offer and started work immediately. As contained in a petition to the Imo state police commissioner, three days after commencement of work at Chinbest Guest House, on the 27th day of December, after the Christmas and Boxing day celebration , the proprietor of Chinbest Guest House, at about 11:30 pm on the fateful day, cornered Miss Ngozi Eneremadu and forced her to drink excessive quantity of alcohol. When she became tipsy with alcohol and posed minimal resistance, Chimeremeze and Vivian allegedly dragged her to the car, forced her in and drove her to the proprietor’s residence. On getting to Chimeremeze’s house, she was taken into the bedroom where she was ordered to undress at gun point. Being a premeditated act, when Ngozi Eneremadu refused to undress, a cable wire was instantly brandished by Chimeremeze with which he started beating and flogging the helpless girl. The attack on Miss Eneremadu was viciously maniacal as Chimeremeze was alleged to have torn her cloths from her body, to bits and pieces. Naked , he shoved her to the floor and brutally lashed and excoriated her back, buttocks and legs. Miss Ngozi Eneremadu’s shout for help was drowned by the compact disc audio player which was turned up to the highest volume by Chimeremeze to cover his savage action. When Miss Eneremadu, mustered up a little energy and attempted to escape, she was pushed back into the room by Vivian, the friend who invited her to the Guest House. As the flogging resumed with more intense brutality, her body convulsed severally and was freely dripping blood from over 32 bleeding stripes. Having lost so much blood, Ngozi Eneremadu drifted in and out of unconsciousness until she eventually passed out . Regaining consciousness, Ngozi Eneremadu noticed three men hovering around , inspecting her body. In a petition to the Imo State Commissioner of police, Barrister D.U Enwere of the Equity Chambers , stated that the ritualists, “owing to the bruises and scars, on Ngozi Eneremadu’s body were overheard telling Chigaemezu that “ the girl would no longer be fit for the ceremony” Huhuonline also gathered that when Chigaemezu tried to convince the trio, one of them firmly stated in a tone of finality, “she would be rejected”. Disappointed, Chimeremeze dashed into the room and resumed the flogging, beating and torture. His depravity reached a height when he poured a portion of diluted acid on the girl’s leg which dripped down her thigh narrowly missing her private part. At this juncture Ngozi Eneremadu was totally exhausted she told Huhuonline that , she was certain, she would die. She was then tied up and kept under lock and key for over three days, according to her petition Her condition was progressively deteriorating . When Chimeremeze realized that her state has become dangerously critical, he untied and gave Ngozi Eneremadu the sum of N5,000 for medical treatment and released her to go. Huhuonline Further gathered that Miss Eneremadu was admitted in hospital for over a week. The doctor was alarmed as he could not imagine how a girl as young as Miss Eneremadu could have been so callously brutalized. Following the petition to the police commissioner , a team of detectives was dispatched to Chinbest Guest House where they were said to have arrested Mr. Chimeremeze. Ironically, Chimeremeze was said not to have been detained as the petitioners are alleging that the woman in-charge of the Monitoring Unit of the Imo state police command who are handling the case have according to their assessment, been clearly compromised as the woman is more interested in finding a way out for the culprit. At this juncture, it is however clear that the petitioners are clearly at a loss as to how to prosecute their case, since as at the time of this report, they were still unable to confirm the real name of the culprit they petitioned and want to prosecute. When Huhuonline spoke with Chimeremeze on the phone, he was all brags threatening to take the case beyond the state to the Police headquarters, Abuja . He however alleged that the victim was a criminal. Hear him, “If you want to know anything about the case now, go to the Police because the matter is with the police. All I can tell you now is that the girl in question is a armed robber.” Ironically, Huhuonline gathered from sources close to the victim that Chimeremeze has already offered the sum of N50,000 to the girl for compensation and medical expenses. This money was rejected by the girl as it amounted to nothing compared to the torture and pain she has undergone. When Huhuonline sought the view of the Imo state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Linus Nwaiwu, he stated that the Imo State Police command would not tolerate any form of barbarism from any quarters, stressing that the command would get to the root of the vicious attack on Miss Ngozi Eneremadu.
