The glamorous lovers’ day celebration on Monday turned bloody at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) when gunmen killed two students. Daily Sun gathered that the clash was between two rival cult groups, namely, Black Axe and the Buccaneers,’ over a female student allegedly snatched by the Capone of the Black Axe for Valentine celebration.

The action of the Capone , the source said did not go down well with the other group leading to the clash.
A student who witnessed the shooting said besides the two cult members who were shot dead, about four others sustained injuries and were ferried out of the campus by their leaders to shield their identity.

The sources said the cult members who carried out the attack were not UNILAG students but members from another campus, adding that the attack was carried out in a commando style with sporadic shooting.
An undergraduate student of English Department told Daily Sun that the Buccaneers’ group attacked the Black Axe members while another student returning from the Mosque said those who carried out the killing were not from UNILAG because they did not cover their faces.

It was learnt that as soon the shooting started, students scampered for safety while others took cover behind the wall and under cars packed around, while others ran into the halls to avoid being hit by stray bullets. 
A senior lecturer who confirmed the killings said the university management had met to curtail any reprisal attack while security personnel had taken over the investigation of the deadly cult clash.
When Daily Sun visited the troubled institution yesterday, there was uneasy calm, as most staff and students rebuffed efforts made by the reporters to get their comments.

However, one of the students who resides at Sodeinde Hall, said there was sporadic gunshots outside the premises which caused panic everywhere. 
It was gathered that the crisis, which erupted when the students were at the peak of lovers’ day celebration, created stampede on the campus as people ran for safety.

One of the victims of the attack reportedly ran into Sodeinde Hall for help, from where he was taken to the hospital.
Although the Hall Master of Sodeinde Hall declined comments on the issue, one of the officials, who wouldn’t want his name published, said the attack could not be linked to any cult group. He said there was increasing speculation that the perpetrators of the attack could be fighting for love. Efforts made by Daily Sun our reporter to ascertain the identities of the victims were unsuccessful.
The news bulletin of the university, Information Flash (ISSN 08195540) also captured the incident, while assuring the staff and students of the university of adequate security.

“The attention of the universities authorities has been drawn to the incident which occurred in one of the Halls of Residence in the late hours of Monday, February 14, 2011 where two persons were reportedly injured in fracas. The university management has commenced investigation into the unusual incident, in particular at a time when preparation for the first semester examinations due to commence on February 21, 2011 are in top gear. Security has been intensified to ensure safety of life and property on campus. Law enforcement agents have been involved to assist the university in this respect,” it said. 
Daily Sun learnt that students are leaving the campus because of the fear of reprisal attack while some parents called their wards on phone to return home until the situation is brought under control. 

The Deputy Registrar Information of UNILAG, Mr. Dare Adebisi refused to pick his calls or replied to text message sent to his phone.
When the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Samuel Jinadu (DSP) was called thrice, he promised to contact the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the area and did not call back as at the press time....

Business activities at mile 12 area of Lagos, were, Wednesday, brought to a halt when a bus belonging to the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transportation Agency, LAMATA allegedly killed an Okada rider while trying to escape from being apprehended by the men of the Lagos State Transport Management Authority, LASTMA.

Meanwhile Governor Babatunde Fashola, SAN of Lagos, yesterday, ordered investigation into the incident.
According to an eyewitness (name withheld), explained that the Okada rider had earlier escaped after violating a traffic law at Ojota axis of the state.

He said: “I do not know which traffic law he violated, but what I saw was that they (LASTMA officials) pursued him from Ojota towards mile 12.”

“On getting to Mile 12 at about 10: 30 am, the Okada rider still on the service lane, discovered that the LASTMA officer were still trailing him. while trying to connect the BRT lane in a rush, he was smack down by the bus and died after some few minutes.”

Another eyewitness said “as I was coming to the office this morning at about 10: 30 am, I saw an Okada man lying down helpless. And his colleagues and sympathisers were also on ground trying to rescue him.”

“I quickly call the two emergency lines-767 and 112, to come to the rescue. But it took the several minutes before arrive the spot,” he said.

The eyewitness added that if men of the LASAMBUS officials arrive on time, the okada rider would not have died.
He noted that after discovering that the Okada rider had lost his life, the LASTMA officer took to their hills and ran towards ketu axis for safety.

“On discovering that the LASTMA officers have escaped, other okada riders and irate youths at the scene vented their anger on the LAGBUS and the Bus Rapid Transport, BRT, and set the two empty buses ablaze,” the source added.

Meanwhile, Governor Fashola who spoke with airport correspondents, said “I have received a preliminary report of the incident and I have ordered an investigation and therefore I think it would prejudicial to come to any conclusions now without getting a detailed report. But I think what is important to be said here is that i doubt that any Okada man will leave his home in the morning with one sole mission to go and fight LAG bus and I also doubt that any LAGbus man will leave home with the sole mission to go and fight Okada man.

“And this is why I have consistently advocated peaceful co-existence, tolerance. Incidence will happen that will provoke our temper, I am human too and at every time I have find it in me to control temper and this is what all of us must do as a people.

I think it is important here to stress that violence and anger are not options for a people who want development. Violence and anger is not a strategy it is sign of weakness. It superior thinking that endures. And therefore I want to appeal to people, anger management is something that we must develop.

“The burning of 2 LAG buses if that is true, it means that those who participated in it have just also contributed in burning the assets that we acquired with their money. This is tax payers money it doesn’t belong to Fashola. It is collective asset for our benefit. So we bought those buses with your money and my money and somebody decide to set it ablaze, has he really contributed to our development?

Now those buses are not manufactured here, even if we have money now we can’t replace them today. Now, those buses serve 100s of Nigerians every day, so we are two buses short and we are 100s of Nigerians who are going into inconvenience and pain.

FCT - Former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, is officially fed up. Reports reaching wazobiareports can confirm that the former General has officially sacked his “jazzman”.

A series of events involving Gen Obasanjo have led him to believe that he is paying the herbalist in question, for nothing.

Sources within the Obasanjo camp have confirmed to wazobiareport that the recent airport assault on the former General, and the public dispute with the former Gov of Ekiti state, has left the General physically shaken and irritated.

The source further stated that the former president has taken active steps to curtail the problem by firing his current herbalist and proceeding to India for “proper cooking”.

A considerable amount of skepticism still remains as to the potency of Obasanjo’s jazz against that of Fayose.

Many believe that for Fayose to have been able to confront the former president in the way he did, he must have been packing some mad heat.

Drunken policeman kills two brothers cos of N20, then mob kills him!

The sleepy community of Ikirun, headquarters of Ifelodun local government area of Osun State, was yesterday thrown into pandemonium following killing of two brothers by policemen at a checkpoint.

Following a reprisal attack by the mob, the police constable who fired the shot over a demand of N20 which the motorcyclist refused to part with, was also murdered while some policemen, including the Divisioanl Police Officer (DPO) in the area were seriously injured.

In the attack, a policeman was  killed while the two police stations located in the town were  torched.

The DPO for Ikirun police division, Abiodun Alabi, who was injured during the attack, was, at press time, on danger list at the state General Hospital, Asubiaro, Osogbo...

Police commissioner, Olusegun Solomon, confirmed the incident.
It was gathered that the two brothers, Lukman Adesina and Taiwo Adesina,  were shot dead by a police corporal at a checkpoint along Osogbo road following their refusal to part with N20 bribe.

It was gathered that the police were mounting road block on Ikirun-Osogbo road when  motorcyclists carrying two other passengers was waved down and his refusal to stop  made the policeman to fire the motorcyclist which killed killed him instantly and wounded the  two passengers.

It was gathered that the three men on the motor bike were children of the same parents. Those killed by the police were identified as  Likman Adesina and Taiwo Adesina. Following the killing, the people around gathered and attacked  the Motor Traffic Department (MTD) in Ikirun and the police station.

The mob also killed the police constable while the station was razed.
It was gathered that while the mob attacked  the police station, some of the officers at the station took to their heels.
Some of them were not all as  lucky  as they were wounded by the mob. The divisional police officer (DPO), whose name was given as Abiodun Alabi, was rushed to the State General Hospital, Asubiaro where he was receiving treatment.

The state commissioner of police  confirmed the incident but said that two people, a civilian and a police officer, died in the incident.

He said that though he did not have the details  of the incident, the policeman shot the motorcyclist while the mob killed the police constable in return.

Three family members at a wedding in Turkey have been accidentally shot dead by the groom firing an AK-47 rifle in celebration.

The groom, Tevfik Altin, lost control of his rifle, spraying the guestswith bullets and killing his father and two aunts and injuring sixothers, according to CNN Turk.

It reported that Altin had been arrested after the incident in the villageof Akcagoze in southeastern Turkey. Guns are often fired into the airin celebration in some parts of Turkey.

One family member, who did not give his name, told CNN: "It happened very quickly. We all triedto take cover and there was blood all over. We are all very sad rightnow."

The injured guests included three children aged 10, 12 and 16, according to CNN Turk.

The Sehitkamil State hospital where some of the injured were brought confirmed it has one patient still in the hospital.

Investigations revealed that while Mr. Jacob was found in a sitting position unconscious when the door of the house was forced open, his first son, a final year Political Science student of Abia State University, Uturu, and his second son were also in the same position, while his wife was lying dead on a six-spring foam.

No Sunday school

It was gathered that members of the church became apprehensive when their pastor or any member of the family was not present at the Sunday School at 8am and could not pick calls put across to them. They went to the house to find out why, but were shocked when there was no response from inside.

It was also gathered that members who had called on them on Saturday had found the doors locked and concluded that they had traveled, without knowing that the family were in distress. They were said to have contacted the police at the Ubakala Police Division who accompanied them to force the door of the house open and discovered the shocking scenario.

The victims were rushed to a nearby hospital where the three were confirmed dead, while the doctors battled to resuscitate Mr. Jacob who was struggling to breathe.

It was further gathered that Mr. Jacob has been transferred to a hospital in Enugu, as the resident doctors’ strike at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, made it imperative that he be referred to a competent hospital.

Chidi Okoroafor, the Umuahia District head of the Assemblies of God, expressed shock at the incident and said it was too early to say the cause of the incident, but assured the police have started investigation to unravel the mystery.

.Gunmen killed two people and kidnapped a traditional ruler while they were attending church services in the oil-producing Niger Delta, police said on Sunday.

At least five others were injured in the attack on Eze Sunday Njoku, the traditional ruler of the Umuebulu community near the oil hub Port Harcourt in Rivers state.

"The hoodlums, who extracted (Njoku) from his seat inside the church, killed two people who reportedly attempted to block them," said Rita Inoma-Abbey, spokeswoman for the Rivers state police.

"Several others also sustained gunshot injuries from stray bullets.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Kidnappings for ransom are common in the Niger Delta, home to Africa's biggest oil and gas industry, with hundreds of incidents reported each year. Most victims are released unharmed after a couple of days.

The court heard that trouble started when Ajikere, his brother and two girls boarded an unpainted taxi cab operated by Fabiyi, who was in plainclothes. The group had to alight from the cab following disagreement on the fare charged by the driver.

Fabiyi was angered by the group’s decision to abandon his taxi in preference for another and made his resentment known to the group, following an exchange of uncomplimentary words between both parties.

Bent on getting his pound of flesh, Fabiyi trailed the group to a mobile police check-point close to a five-star hotel along GRA and hurriedly lied to the policemen that the occupants of the other cab were criminals and should be dealt with.

Testifying at the trial, the younger brother of murdered Ajikere said the group was ordered out of the cab and frog-jumped, beaten black and blue and ordered to lay face-down on the tarred road. This was even as the policemen refused to listen to their own side of the story.

Unable to bear the torture any longer, he said, Ajikere tried to stand up and was shot at point-blank range by Cpl. Aminu. His life could not be saved as he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital that said Ajikere died of excessive bleeding.

Delivering judgment after sentencing the men to death by hanging, Monday, Justice Boma Diepreyi said the sentence would serve as a deterrent to other uniformed men “whose stock-in-trade is to kill innocent citizens under the guise of accidental discharge.”

Diepreyi said it would be unfair to take the plea of both Fabiyi and Aminu for mercy, adding: “In as much as I sympathize with them, there is the blood of the young Nnamdi Ajikere, the deceased 20 year-old final year student of University of Port Harcourt crying for vengeance.

“Justice is a balancing act and the only way to a balanced justice in this case is to make the accused persons face the consequences of their reckless act and hope that this will serve as a deterrent to those who may want to emulate their terrible example.”

Meantime, in preparation for the 2011 elections, the Nigeria Police Force has warned its officers to steer clear of inducements by politicians or their agents during the elections stressing that officers found culpable may be dismissed from service and jailed.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations, Mr. John Hamza Ahmadu, who gave the warning, Tuesday, while addressing the officers at the state command headquarters in Ilorin, also announced that N2billion has been released for the housing projects for officers nationwide.

Ahmadu charged the officers not to compromise their professional ethics and destroy their career because of what he described as chicken fees from politicians assured them that all their allowances would be paid before the elections.

He also urged politicians to warn their supporters to restrict their campaigns to their manifestos and play the game according to the rules adding that those who foment trouble will be dealth with.

Colin's immediate reaction, just as I'd hoped, was to look like a man who'd been told he'd won the Lottery.

But almost immediately his face then fell.

'We used to have sex every day as a matter of course,' he said grumpily. 'Now you're offering it up as a gift and I'm supposed to be grateful?'

This really wasn't what I'd expected, having just offered love on request to the man I married seven years ago and who is always bending my ear that we don't do it enough. Somehow my well-meant offer had suddenly brought us to the brink of a row.

I'd come up with the idea because, in common with so many couples, in recent years lovemaking had been relegated in my agenda.

Unlike the heady days when Colin and I first met, now there is always something else that takes precedence - from work to domestic chores and even the simple pleasure of a full night's sleep.

When we met, I was 19 and Colin ten years older - the sexual attraction was mutual and instant. For the first few months, our passionate love life defined us, but as months turned to years and we got engaged and then married, things inevitably changed.

Over time, familiarity, the stresses of work and day-to-day life and the fact my sex drive just isn't what it used to be have combined to dampen the passion we once took for granted.

These days we make love about once a week. And, in common with many of my friend's husbands, Colin regularly complains that this just isn't enough.

'At least when we do it, it's spontaneous,' Colin told me. 'You putting it into your diary isn't exactly a turn on.'

But despite his reservations, we decided to give it a go.

DAY ONE

There's no time like the present, so, for the first time in at least five years we make love on a work day before I've even put the kettle on.

So much for Colin worrying about this taking the spontaneity out of sex: this feels impulsive and slightly wicked.

I arrive at work with a smug smile on my face (though guiltily note that this also means I'm off the hook at bedtime, having done the day's deed already).

DAY TWO

Home from work later than usual, I walk in to find the table beautifully set with candles and flowers and dinner in the oven.

The last time Colin did this was our wedding anniversary, but this is just an ordinary evening. It's amazing what the promise of frequent sex brings out in a man.

DAY THREE

Home to find the table set and Colin's cooking again - I could get used to this. I feel spoilt, especially when he refuses to let me wash up and sends me upstairs for a soak in the bath. This is beginning to feel as much a gift for me as for Colin.

DAY FOUR

I've stayed late at work and missed the last bus home, so I've had to fork out for a taxi when I'm dangerously close to payday. I'm in a foul mood when I walk into the house and am greeted by the same scene as the last two days.

'God, this is starting to feel like Groundhog Day,' I snap unkindly. We eat in silence, and I start to feel guilty when I think how much effort Colin is making. 'Leave the dishes,' I tell him. 'It's time for your present.'

DAY FIVE

Last night could so easily have ended with us going to sleep not speaking after I arrived home so tired and grumpy.

Instead we slept wrapped up in each other's arms, just like the old days. It's Saturday, so we're less restricted on when we can make love. We decide to get our chores done: the house needs cleaning and Colin needs to tackle the garden.

We're shattered and fall asleep on the sofa. Colin's snoring wakes me up just before midnight. 'Quick,' I tell him, as I shake him awake and push the cats out of the room. 'Otherwise it won't count.'

DAY SIX

Sundays in our house are normally lazy affairs, but today we've got a christening to go to and we're running late.

We vow to make love as soon as we get home, but while Colin doesn't drink, I'm partial to champagne, and it's been flowing all afternoon.

Back home, all I want to do is go to bed and sleep, but, of course, I can't.

DAY SEVEN

I'm beginning to wonder if this was such a good idea.

Last night, love-making felt like a chore for the first time, and because neither of us was particularly in the mood we just went through the motions.

I'm not looking forward to bedtime and Colin admits he's not interested either. Sure enough, we fall asleep without any marital relations taking place. Looks like this could be over before it got started.

DAY EIGHT

I wake up cross with both of us that we've given up so easily, and tell Colin we've got to make up for last night by making love twice today.

We tackle the project with renewed vigour before work and then again straight after dinner.

'At least now we can go to bed and go straight to sleep,' says Colin. I feign indignation, but he's only said exactly what I was thinking.

DAY NINE

Colin wakes up hoping for a repeat performance of yesterday, but I'm not playing. I have to be in work early. 'Tonight, I promise,' I say as we kiss goodbye.

What's normally a brief kiss turns into a passionate one - not bad considering we've been together more than a decade. I think about Colin regularly through the day.

DAY TEN

My sister calls to remind me that I've promised to baby-sit my 11 and 14-year-old nieces this weekend. I tell her that I'm worried this might impact on our lovemaking.

'Welcome to my world,' she scoffs, before telling me I can't back out on my sisterly duties. I tell Colin that we have to practise being very quiet.

DAY 11

The girls arrive armed with DVDs and bags of sweets, and announce they want to stay up really late, just like they did last time they stayed over. By 11pm, I'm pleading with them to go to sleep.

'Forget it,' I snap at Colin when I finally get under the duvet. There's no way I can do that with the girls awake on the other side of the wall.

DAY 12

Little wonder couples with children complain they don't have enough sex: finding an opportunity with these two in the house is all but impossible.

In the end, I send them out with a long shopping list, set the timer on my phone to go off in ten minutes and drag Colin upstairs. 'Look on it as a challenge,' I tell him.

DAY 13

The girls go home and we've got the house to ourselves. Midmorning I say breezily: 'I'll just vacuum and then we can go to bed.'

Bad move. I accidentally suck up one of the girl's hair bobbles and it gets stuck in the machine.

It takes Colin an hour to get it going again, by which time love is the last thing on either of our minds. But we do it anyway and then go out for lunch, something we realise we just don't do often enough.

DAY 14

I go out for a drink after work with a girlfriend and tell her about our project. 'You must be mad,' she says, before warning me that our friendship will be ruined if Colin or I tell her husband what we're up to. 'Don't you dare go giving him any daft ideas.'

DAY 15

I'm going to be working late tonight, so I set the alarm for 6am so we can get our duties out of the way before the day gets started. Colin grunts when I try to nudge him awake. 'I need my sleep,' he groans.

Maybe he'll be a bit more understanding when he's in the mood for love and I say that I'm too tired.

DAY 16

Friends come round for a midweek dinner and comment on how attentive we seem to each other. I keep quiet about why, having taken note of my friend's reaction earlier in the week, but throw Colin a wink.

We're definitely a lot more tactile with each other, and have started flirting again.

DAY 17

I spoke too soon - we've had a huge row over the fact that Colin forgot to put out the bin last night and now we're up to our eyes in rubbish.

He can't see why I'm making such a fuss, which only makes me madder. The last thing I want to do is to make love with Colin. Normally something like this would be the perfect excuse to withhold sex, but that's not an option.

It's difficult to stay cross with someone you've made love to - Colin promises to make a trip to the tip and all is forgiven.

DAY 18

I've got a streaming cold and a headache. Colin is keeping his distance. 'What about a cuddle?' I ask as I splutter into a tissue. 'No thanks,' says Colin. 'I'm sleeping in the spare room.'

DAY 19

Still poorly, so I stay in bed. Colin spends the day bringing me hot drinks and homemade soup, and does all the housework so I can rest.

He's never been this attentive when I've had a cold before - all this lovemaking has made him a changed man.

DAY 20

The weekend has been a write-off on the sex front, yet Colin and I feel closer and more relaxed than we have in a long time.

It brings it home to me how important regular sex in a marriage is to nurture the bond you share.

DAY 21

Back to work, and I'm almost restored to full health. I send Colin a flirty text hinting at the fun we'll be able to enjoy when we see each other later. I can't believe I'm chatting up my own husband.

DAY 22

I notice that my trousers are a little looser, so I step on the scales and discover I've lost 2lb. All this extra exercise is doing me good.

DAY 23

A friend is in town and stays the night. I'd emailed her at the start of the month and told her what we were doing, which she brings up over dinner, joking that we'd better not keep her awake tonight.

This puts Colin in a bad mood because I've let slip what we're up to, and when she goes to bed he has a go at me for being indiscreet. I try to laugh it off, but he's really cross about it. He refuses to make love. I lie awake fuming - isn't it supposed to be the woman who withholds favours?

DAY 24

Colin wakes feeling guilty and suggests we make up for missing out yesterday. I realise that the argument will only escalate if I refuse. Instead, we make love and the grumpiness vanishes. We make love again that evening, our row long forgotten.

DAY 25

I meet my mum for lunch and she comments on how fresh-faced I appear. 'Have you discovered a new foundation?' she asks.

I must say I feel more attractive and better about myself than I have in years. Feeling desired does wonders for a woman's self-esteem.

DAY 26

A man held a Calgary school secretary at knifepoint for two hours, police have announced charges against a suspect.

Police said Friday that a Nigerian, Matthew Akani Adeniran, 25, has been charged with several offences, including forcible confinement, assault
with a weapon, uttering threats, criminal harassment and possession of
a weapon in connection to Thursday's hostage-taking at A.E. Cross
Junior High School..

No one was injured in the incident, which happened just before 2 p.m. in the school office, as students filled the main gym for a pep rally
featuring Olympic silver medallist Carolyn Darbyshire.

Contacted Friday, Adeniran's father said his son has been acting erratically for some time.

"At night he was talking to himself and mumbling," said Gabriel Adeniran. "He needs help, to be honest."

Darbyshire, a member of the Canadian women's curling team, has a son who attends the school and was about to go into the assembly when an agitated man
entered the office.

The man demanded to see the school principal — then brandished a knife when he was told the principal wasn't available.

Darbyshire raced to the gymnasium to alert school authorities, while her husband stayed back to monitor the situation.

Darbyshire and the teachers started the pep rally as planned, trying to keep the students calm until police arrived.

As the tactical team entered the school and patrol officers surrounded the building, a staff member abruptly ended the rally. After a few minutes,
officials evacuated the gym and bused the students to another nearby
school.

Meanwhile, a tactical team member had entered the office, where he saw a man holding the secretary, Bonnie Grainger, at knifepoint.

The officer began talking to the man. Police said the hostage-taker was a former student at A.E. Cross who blames the principal for a sports
injury he suffered 10 years ago.

What nobody knew in those first minutes was there was a student in the office when the hostage taking began: a 13-year-old boy who managed to
hide in an inner office.

The boy's mother called 911 after he reached her using a phone inside the office. The boy was safe, but police had no way of phoning him back
without alerting the hostage taker and putting him in danger.

After two hours, however, police negotiators convinced the man to free Grainger in exchange for a bottle of water.
