The star of "Cleopatra" and "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles surrounded by her four children after a long battle with congestive heart failure, her spokesperson said. She had been hospitalized six weeks ago.

In a career spanning seven decades, Taylor first gained fame in 1944's "National Velvet" at age 12 and was nominated for five Oscars. She won the best actress award for "Butterfield 8" (1960) and "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" (1966) with actor Richard Burton, whom she would marry twice.

But Taylor's eight marriages, health problems, prescription medication addiction and ballooning weight often overshadowed her career and her fund-raising efforts for AIDS research. Her death triggered an outpouring of tributes. "My mother was an extraordinary woman who lived life to the fullest, with great passion, humour, and love," Taylor's son Michael Wilding said. "We have just lost a Hollywood giant. More importantly we have lost an incredible human being," British singer Elton John said in a statement.

Taylor was born on February 27, 1932, in London to American parents. She moved to the United States as a child and soon after her 10th birthday landed the lead in 1942 film "Lassie Come Home," followed by her turn as a young girl who tames the fury of a wild horse in "National Velvet." She confirmed her star power in 1958 in Tennessee Williams' "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" and cemented her reputation as among the greatest actresses of her generation playing a foul-mouthed alcoholic in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"

Glamorous Hollywood life

But Taylor's fame went far beyond her screen life. After marriages to hotel magnate Conrad Hilton, British actor Michael Wilding and film producer Mike Todd in 1958, she found herself in a scandalous 1950s love triangle with singer Eddie Fisher and his wife actress Debbie Reynolds, before marrying Fisher.

While filming the lavish "Cleopatra" in Rome in 1961, she started a torrid affair with her married co-star Burton. The pair first wed in 1964 and Burton lavished her with furs and diamonds, including a $1 million pear-shaped jewel. Her last movie was the 1994 live action comedy "The Flintstones" but she was still making appearances at charity events before being hospitalized in February.

As she grew older, the actress began drinking heavily and grew addicted to prescription drugs. Her weight ballooned and in 1983 she entered the Betty Ford Centre in California for treatment. In the last few years, the once legendary beauty took to using a wheelchair in public to cope with crippling back pain. She was first diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 2004. She also had three hip replacement operations, a benign brain tumour, skin cancer, pneumonia and heart surgery.

The American Foundation for AIDS Research (amFAR), of which Taylor was founding national chairman, said she was "without doubt one of the most inspirational figures in the fight against AIDS. She was among the first to speak out on behalf of people living with HIV when others reacted with fear and often outright hostility." Among Taylor's close friends was pop star Michael Jackson, whom she befriended while he was growing up and whom she staunchly defended as he was tried and acquitted on child molestation charges. In May 2000, Taylor received the title "Dame," the female equivalent of a knighthood, from Queen Elizabeth.

She died surrounded by her children. She is survived by 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Brit student Claudia Aderotimi dies in US after 'butt-boost' jab

  • transparent.gif
a-woman-dies-after-having-implants-put-in-her-bum-pic-myspace-266592454.jpg?width=450

STUDENT Claudia Aderotimi was prepared to risk everything for her dream of stardom.

The 20-year-old was convinced she needed a little surgical help to launch her showbiz career.

But she paid with her life after flying to America for a cut-price implant to enhance the shape of her bottom.

The aspiring actress and dancer had a heart attack after complaining of chest pains within hours of the bodged silicone jab in a cheap hotel room.

She died in hospital on Tuesday just two weeks before her 21st birthday.

Claudia had travelled to Philadelphia with three pals after arranging the £1,120 “butt boost” on the internet.

Yesterday it was revealed she had a similar operation in the States last November.

US medical experts suspect the cause of her death was silicone being injected into a vein rather than muscle tissue, causing a clot.12166299095?profile=original

Detectives believe whoever carried out the illegal op may have used industrial-style silicone sealant rather than the proper medical kind.

Police yesterday raided the New Jersey home of the woman they believed set up the jab.

They also seized emails which could lead them to the person who carried out the procedure.

A source said possible charges could include negligent homicide – the same accusation facing Michael Jackson’s doctor, Conrad Murray.

Claudia and her three friends were staying at the Hampton Inn hotel in east Philadelphia after arriving on Saturday for a week-long stay.

One of them, aged 20, also had the operation but is said to be well and helping police with information.

In her last message on Twitter the day she had the jab Claudia tweeted: “I’m goooonneeeeee so faR away.” Popular Claudia, believed to be of Nigerian descent, had performed with hip-hop stars Akon and Sisqo.

She used the stage-name Claudiyah “Superstar” James, and said on a website: “I’m really interested in becoming a full-time actress and model. I also dance and write music.

“I truly believe I can take the world by storm – I just need an agent.” She also boasted that rap star 50 Cent had called her an “African princess”.

Claudia’s devastated family were still coming to terms with the tragedy at their home in Hackney, East London, as they arranged for her body to be flown home.

Her tearful sister Vivian said: “We’re still in shock. We need to think about what we have to do.” A relative added: “Her mother is inconsolable. She has had to be sedated. We are still trying to find out what exactly happened.”

A 17-year-old neighbour who did not want to be named said: “Claudia was a really pretty girl. I don’t know why she felt she had to have the treatment. It’s such a waste.” Friends posted dozens of messages on networking sites.

One read: “RIP Claudiyah.. i will never forget u.. gone too soon love u always – rest in perfect peace.”

Last night a leading consultant condemned the practice of travelling abroad for unlicensed cosmetic operations.

Rajiv Grover, President Elect of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, said: “There must be some very desperate people around to organise on the internet to meet a stranger in a cheap hotel room near an airport and pay to have a dangerous illegal procedure.

“It seems she got away with it the first time around, and it’s true that you can get away with it sometimes.

“But it is like playing Russian roulette. Each time you have it done, you’re risking your life.”

Nigerian woman dies onboard Ethiopian plane

A Nigerian, Zainab Suleiman,62, on Sunday died onboard an Ethiopian airlines flight from Addis Ababa to Abuja..

The deceased’s husband, Suleiman Abdulra’uf, a Kano based businessman, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent in Addis Ababa that they were returning from New Delhi, when they transited to Addis Ababa and boarded another plane for onward journey back to Nigeria.

‘‘We travelled to New Delhi for treatment. She was discharged and on our way back,

we stopped over here in Addis Ababa where we changed planes, but one and a half hours after take-off, she died and the plane returned to Addis Ababa,’’ Mr. Abdulra’uf said.

He described the death of his wife as the will of God and that the corpse had been deposited at a morgue, while Ethiopian immigration and airline officials were making necessary arrangement for its transportation to Nigeria. He said he took the deceased to New Delhi for a cancer treatment.

NAN reports that some senior officials of the Nigerian Embassy in Ethiopia, headed by John Ejinaka, the Charge de Affairs of the embassy, had on Monday met with the deceased’s husband at the Chancery in Addis Ababa.

Another Nigerian was also reported to have died last week onboard an Ethiopian Airline plane from Abuja to New Delhi. The deceased was also going for medical treatment in India.

Mr. Ejinaka told the NAN that the embassy recorded six of such cases in 2009.

18-year-old dies after abortion

Homicide detectives at Panti, Yaba, have began investigation into the death of a teenager, Uju Onwuzuruigbe, who allegedly died from complications arising from an unsafe abortion.

Miss Onwuzuruigbe, 18, bled to death on October 22 at her parents’ house at Shuribu, in Ajangbadi, few days after an auxiliary nurse, identified as Joy Temi, performed an abortion for her. Her parents reported the matter to the police; and subsequently her lover, Peter Chukwunakwe, and the nurse were arrested.

The victim’s mother told her story. “Uju be my daughter and she is the fifth child wen I born, dem plenty wen I get,” she said. “But on the 22nd, she come home tell me her mama say her belly dey pain her. She come say make her I give her hot water to drink. As she drink and she still dey cry, dey roll for bed say her belly still dey pain her. I come ask her say wetin happen she say na stomach, but around 5.30 am she come dey shake say she wan die. I tell her say she no go die make she tell me wetin happen. Na so she come confess say, ‘mama, I don do you bad, na belly I remove.’ She tell me about the nurse, na so I come hear about wetin happen to my daughter. As she tell me these thing, na so she come die. We come go report the case to police.”

Not guilty..

Both the nurse, Ms Temi, and the alleged lover, Mr Chukwunakwe, denied procuring abortion for the deceased. “She came to me on October 7th that she has a venereal disease, that she was having discharges,” said Ms Temi. “I gave her Gentamicin Tablet and she went home. It was after some days that the police came and arrest me that I did abortion for Uju. I am a trained nurse and I got my certificate at the Falati Hospital. I did not do any abortion for her, I only treated her for a virginal infection and it is not an STD she had.”

Mr Chukwunakwe agreed that he dated the deceased, but denied knowledge of the pregnancy. “Uju is my girl friend and I have known her for more than one year,” he said. “She did not tell me that she was pregnant and I did not take her for any abortion, so I do not know anything about her death.”

Not interested in justice

Ambrose Onwozurigbe, the father of the victim, said he is not interested in prosecuting the case. “I want make police release my daughter dead body make I go bury her,” he said. “Her body dey for mortuary and doctors no dey to do autopsy for her. Wetin don happen don happen. E no good make she dey there dey smell, her spirit no agree rest and we want carry her go burry her make her spirit rest, so we want make police release her body to us.”

Investigations into homicide cases in the state are being stalled following the strike by Lagos doctors. A morgue attendant at the Isolo General Hospital, who did not wish to be named, confirmed that cases of corpses without autopsy reports have increased in the last two months as a result of the doctors’ strike. “One thing you should know is that detectives cannot do their work especially in homicide cases when there is no autopsy report to prove the causes of death,” he said. “Many people are just coming here to claim their corpses without due autopsy report because the doctors that will carry it out are on strike. So people must bury their dead, and I can tell you that because of this strike, the corpses at this general hospital have increased.”

The millionaire owner of the UK Segway company has died after apparently riding one of his company's motorised scooters off cliffs and into a river.

Jimi Heselden, 62, crashed into the River Wharfe while riding the vehicle round his estate in Thorp Arch, Boston Spa, West Yorkshire, on Sunday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. The scooter was found in the water.

Mr Heselden, who founded Leeds-based company Hesco Bastion, acquired the Segway operation in 2010.

A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Police confirmed Mr Heselden's identity.

She said: "Police were called at 1140 yesterday to reports of a man in the River Wharfe, apparently having fallen from the cliffs above."

She said a "Segway type" vehicle had been recovered.

Charity donations

Mr Heselden grew up in the Halton Moor area of Leeds, leaving school at 15 and working down local pits.

He worked as a miner before losing his job in a wave of redundancies in the 1980s.

His engineering business went from strength-to-strength and he had a fortune reported to be £166m, making him one of the top 400 richest people on the UK.

The tycoon was well known for his donations to charity, giving more than £20m to good causes.

Earlier this month he donated £10m to the Leeds Community Foundation..

A spokesperson for Hesco Bastion said: "It is with great sadness that we have to confirm that Jimi Heselden OBE, has died in a tragic accident near his home in West Yorkshire."

The spokesperson added: "Jimi is perhaps best known for his charity work with Help for Heroes and the Leeds Community Foundation.

"A £10m gift to the foundation earlier this month saw his lifetime charitable donations top £23m.

"Our thoughts go out to his family and many friends, who have asked for privacy at this time."

Delta Airlines on Monday said a female passenger was found dead on one of its flights from Atlanta, United States to Lagos.

Delta sources said the 57-year-old passenger was accompanied by her son when she died on Monday. The Associated Press quoted the American carrier’s Corporate Communications Director, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Ms. Olivia Cullis, as saying that the passenger was found unresponsive early Monday aboard Delta Flight 53, about an hour out of Atlanta and about 11 hours from the time it took off.

Delta said it could not provide the passenger’s identity due to privacy restriction laws. Cullis added, “Approximately an hour from Atlanta, the crew of Flight 53 alerted flight operations that a passenger was unresponsive and had no vital signs. The flight landed normally and we are coordinating with medical authorities. Delta extends its sincere condolences to the passenger’s family.”

A statement by the Senior Manager, Media Relations, Delta, Susan Elliot, said the airline was working with medical authorities to determine the facts in the case..

AP quoted Atlanta’s police spokesman, Otis Redmond, as saying that foul play was not suspected. A Georgia Bureau of Investigation medical examiner’s investigator was sent to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Atlanta, according to the report.

Atlanta police spokesman Otis Redmond told AP that foul play was not suspected in the woman’s death. Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman John Bankhead said the woman’s body was taken to a crime laboratory for an autopsy.

Bankhead said the FBI was investigating the matter because the death occurred on an international flight.

Winnie Langley, who has died aged 102, is pictured here lighting what was thought to roughly be her 170,000 cigarette on her 100th birthday

The oldest smoker in Britain has died aged 102, after puffing her way through 170,000 cigarettes.

Winnie Langley started smoking only days after the First World War broke out in June 1914 when she was just seven-years-old - and had five a day until last year..

She even celebrated her 100th birthday by lighting up her 170,000th cigarette from a candle on her birthday cake.

The Croydon-based pensioner cut down from her five-a-day habit to just one cigarette last year because of the credit crunch. She then quit at Christmas due to her failing eyesight.

Family member Anne Gibbs paid a glowing tribute to her aunt.

'She only gave up because she could not see the end of the match to light it. She was fiesty and stubborn and she also had a wonderful sense of humour,' she told the Croydon Guardian.

Winnie, who was born in Croydon in 1907 claimed tobacco never made her ill because she didn't inhale, although she did successfully battle cancer in her nineties.

'There were not all the the health warnings like there are today when I started. It was the done thing,' she said at her 100th birthday party.

Manute Bol, a lithe 7-foot-7 shot-blocker from Sudan who spent 10 seasons in the NBA and was dedicated to humanitarian work in Africa, died Saturday. He was 47.

Take a look back at Manute Bol's NBA career in our photo gallery.

Bol died at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, where he was being treated for severe kidney trouble and a painful skin condition, Tom Prichard, executive director of the group Sudan Sunrise, said in an e-mail.

"Sudan and the world have lost a hero and an example for all of us," Prichard said. "Manute, we'll miss you. Our prayers and best wishes go out to all his family, and all who mourn his loss."

Bol played 10 seasons in the NBA with Washington, Golden State, Philadelphia and Miami and later worked closely as an advisory board member of Sudan Sunrise, which promotes reconciliation in Sudan. Bol averaged 2.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.3 blocked shots..

He was hospitalized in mid-May during a stopover in Washington after returning to the United States from Sudan. Prichard said then that Bol was in Sudan to help build a school in conjunction with Sudan Sunrise but stayed longer than anticipated after the president of southern Sudan asked him to make election appearances and use his influence to counter corruption in his home county.

He said Bol had undergone three dialysis treatments and developed Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, a condition that caused him to lose patches of skin.

Prichard said the skin around Bol's mouth was so sore that he went 11 days without eating and could barely talk.

Prichard said it's believed that Bol contracted the skin disease as a reaction to kidney medication he took while in Africa.

Janis Ricker, operations manager of Sudan Sunrise, said Saturday that the organization would continue its work building the school in Bol's home village in southern Sudan. The building still lacks a second floor roof, she said.

She said Bol's goal was to build 41 schools throughout Sudan.

"We are in the process of still helping Manute build a school, and we will continue with that," Ricker said.

basketball star dies in US as Car Crash claims another Naija Young Star.A few weeks ago the death was announced of HipHop star Dagrin.

Agency Reporter

Tobi Oyedeji, a Ni.ger.ian power forward slated to begin his collegiate career at Texas A&M next season, died in the US on Sunday due to injuries sustained in a car accident. Early reports suggest Oyedeji was driving a car involved in a two-vehicle accident in which one other person was killed.

Oyedeji played high school ball in Bellaire, Texas, and made the All-Greater Houston team last season as a senior. He was considered a top-100 recruit in his class. Rivals ranked him as the No. 18 power forward in the class of 2010.

"The world has lost a great kid today (Sunday)," said Texas A&M coach Mark Turgeon in a statement on Oyedeji's tragic death.

"Tobi epitomised the term student-athlete. He was a very good student. He worked hard in the classrooms and on the basketball court and he was a terrific basketball player. This is difficult to understand and today is a very sad day. My heart aches for his mom and dad. Tobi was an only child and I would like everyone to pray for Tobi's parents."

Another account of his death says Oyedeji dropped his last friend off after prom night, called his father Kunle Oyedeji and told him he was on his way home early Sunday morning. The 6-foot-9, 220-pound, 18-year-old power forward, who was destined to be an impact player for Texas A&M in the fall and committed to studying engineering, never made it to his house.

He was in a head-on collision shortly after the phone call home and died after attempts at life-saving surgery weren't successful Sunday afternoon..

Hal Pastner, who runs Houston Hoops, an AAU program Oyedeji played for, was crushed as well when he was told the news on Sunday afternoon. Turgeon said Oyedeji was the first player he recruited when he took the job three years ago. "This has been a three-year relationship, we were really close," Turgeon said.

"From the first day he came to our camp, I knew he was coming to Texas A&M. He was going to be an engineer. This was the perfect place for him."

Turgeon last saw Oyedeji at a workout in April and said he told his assistant coaches that Oyedeji was going to help the Aggies quite a bit next season. Oyedeji had been on campus apparently five to seven times a season in the past three years.

"He was going to be a big part of our program," Turgeon said. "More than just basketball, his personality, his character, he would have helped us in so many ways."

Funeral Arrangements

HOUSTON, TX -- Funeral arrangements for Tobi Oyedeji, the All-State Bellaire High School senior basketball player who was a Texas A&M basketball signee, have been announced by the family.

A viewing will be held Friday, May 21, from 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home and Cemetery located at 12800 Westheimer in Houston (zip code 70777 and phone 281-497-2330).

A Celebration Service will be held at Dominion Chapel located at 1203 Cravens Road in Stafford, Texas (77477) at 7 p.m. on Friday. (Phone 281-208-3510)

The graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 22, at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home and Cemetery.

In consultation with the NCAA national office, Texas A&M secured permission to provide Tobi’s parents with assistance, and Coach Mark Turgeon and the basketball staff are coordinating the assistance. In lieu of flowers, fans and former students who wish to show their support are asked to donate to the Tobi Oyedeji Scholarship Endowment through the 12th Man Foundation. Those who prefer, may also send sympathy cards to the Oyedeji family through the men’s basketball office at PO Box 30017, College Station, TX 77842-3017.

“We lost a member of our Aggie basketball family this past week,” Texas A&M Head Basketball Coach Mark Turgeon said. “Even though Tobi is gone, he will not be forgotten. He was a very special young man, he was an Aggie. He had a profound influence on so many people.”

“I would continue to ask for prayers for Tobi’s parents,” Turgeon added. “We will make sure Tobi’s family is not burdened by funeral and medical expenses.”

“I did not know why Tobi chose Texas A&M,” Michael Oyedeji, Tobi’s father, said. “He told me he felt like he was part of a family, and that he already felt loved by the team.”

Tobi Oyedeji died from injuries suffered in a car accident on Sunday, May 16.

Stanley Macebuh dies in poverty !

Stanley Macebuh dies in penury

...Cant afford rent, medical attention

...Why he suffered stroke in 2006

...Why he moved to Gwarrimpa

One of journalism’s great minds, Dr Stanley Macebuh, is dead.

He died yesterday at the National Hospital, Abuja. He was 67.

Sympathizers thronged his Abuja home last night as the news of his death spread.

Many wept at the passage of Macebuh, pioneer Managing Director/Executive Editor of The Guardian, who was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the National Hospital at 6p.m., on Saturday.

Macebuh suffered a stroke in 2006.

His widow, Pauline, was all tears at their Gwarimpa, Abuja home, as she recalled her husband’s last moments.

She said she would miss Macebuh who she described as "my best friend".

Mrs Macebuh said: "He was a nice person but the greatest thing about him is that he had an attitude of giving. Stanley can fend for others and forget his family. Right now, I don’t know how to tell Kelechi that her dad is dead: you know he calls her ‘Babes’ and calls me ‘Champion’ as I had helped him recuperate after the partial stroke that almost took his life in 2006. I still love him and would miss him greatly."

Macebuh’s immediate younger brother, Prof. Kingsley Macebuh,

described him as "bookish" adding: "He was the kindest big brother any person could strive to have".

He said Macebuh’s friends in the United States called him "Baba Uwa" meaning father of all because of his selfless nature.

"He was not interested in accumulating wealth, he aimed for no property as far as he had a roof over his head", Prof. Macebuh said.

He said Macebuh had been complaining of weakness for the past one week, after being treated for malaria two weeks ago.

"He had even gone for a typhoid test, which came out negative. I spoke to him just yesterday (Saturday) about 1:38pm but I didn’t check on him till his personal Assistant came and told me that ‘Oga is shaking O!,’ we then rushed him to the hospital around six o’clock from where he gave up the ghost at 4:15am at the National Hospital Abuja.

"My brother has left a serious vacuum, he was selfless, he gave everything he had. He worked more for his friends’ welfare than his family. The family will miss his sense of natural patriotism for which he gave all in deeds and writings. He was more patriotic to his country than to his family. But still he gave all he had for the upkeep of the entire (extended) family".

Macebuh died a pauper. "He suffered a lot before his death. In 2007, the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) took his home on Panama Street in Maitama because he couldn’t pay for the house sold to him by the Federal Government." He really suffered, a relation said.

His widow recalled that they lived in the street for three months before help came in Gwarimpa House 13 Road 12 where he lived till he died.

Before his death, the caretaker/landlord had served him quit notice, which expires today.

Mrs Macebuh noted that in 2007, when he was robbed and his hands broken, there was no aid to fly him abroad for surgery.

This was said to have led to first stroke he had.

His 10 year-old child Kelechi risks being sent out of school for non-payment of fees.

At the mortuary, no money had been deposited for a space for him when The Nation visited.

Only money for embalmment had been paid.

Mrs Macebuh pleaded that her husband be immortalized because of his large heart.

Macebuh was born on December 28, 1942. He attended Ngwa High School and King’s College, Lagos.

He attended University of Ibadan and graduated with a second class upper division. He was admitted to the University of Sussex in 1967, receiving a Ph.D in English Language in 1969.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline and three children-Ikenna (23), Marissa Adaku (27) and 10-year old Kelechi.

We are living witnesses to her contributions at emancipating African women,” the governor said. Also, a friend of the Babangidas, Sir Tunde Olowu, described Maryam’s death ”as a great loss to her family, her pet non-governmental organisation, and the nation. Only God can console IBB who was by her bedside for over three months in America. It’s a lesson in love and character. May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace.’’ Asaba community, Uduaghan shocked The Asaba Community, where Maryam, was born, was thrown into mourning as the news of her death broke yesterday afternoon. We will miss her and I hope she will be remembered as the First Lady who empowered the women and popularised African fabric.” In a reaction, the member representing Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency, Mr. Ndudi Elumelu, said: “I am very sad that we lost her. I represent her constituency and I can tell you that we have lost a great daughter of Ahaba and we, the good people of Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency and Anioma people are really in pain. May Allah comfort her husband and the children she left behind.’’ The Ikemba Ahaba, Chief Joseph Achuzia, said “the death of this our dear daughter is painful. It is a tragedy. We will remember her for the indelible role she played in giving us (Asaba) a state capital during her husband’s tenure. We will continue to remember that role. We pray that God will give the husband, our in-law the fortitude to bear the loss and also her brother, Chief Sonny Okogwu, as well as the children she left behind. What a painful loss!” Relatedly, Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, in a statement in Asaba, yesterday, noted that “It is with great shock and personal loss that I received the news of the death of Nigeria’s former First Lady, Mrs. Maryam Babangida. “Her passage to the great beyond undoubtedly marks a watershed in the history of Delta State. Apart from being a proud and treasured daughter of our state, we will continue to remember her unwavering role in ensuring that Delta maintains its lead among other states. “Definitely, we will miss her motherly advice and support. “We express our heartfelt condolences to her husband, former President Ibrahim Babangida, to whom she was a friend and companion; her children; and above all to her extended family back home in Asaba, Delta State. May God grant us all the fortitude to bear this loss. Brother, Okogwu weeps Kaduna-based brother of the deceased, Chief Sonny Okogwu, cried yesterday as sympathisers trooped to his Ship House residence to condole him on the death of his younger sister, and wife of former President Babangida. “I wish I saw her before she died,” Okogwu said, adding that she was a special woman who contributed her quota to the development of the country. Sambo, in a statement noted that, “it is indeed, a great loss to the nation and she will be greatly missed. May her soul rest in Aljanna firdaus and may Allah Subhanahu Wata’ala provide the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.” Ex gov. Makarfi mourns However, the immediate past governor of the state, Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, said: “I received with shock and sadness, but also with total submission to the will of Allah news of the death this morning, of Hajiya (Mrs) Maryam Babangida, wife of President Ibrahim Babangida. “Even though death is the inevitable end of all of us, her death at this time will certainly leave a huge vacuum, not only in the Babangida family but also in the lives of the multitude she had touched in several ways through her philanthropy and kind-heartedness. “This country will not forget the benevolence behind many of her moves, particularly the Better Life for Rural Women Programme, which in no small measure helped in mobilising Nigerian women and awakening them to attempt to explore their potentials to the fullest. “We take solace, therefore, in the feeling that though God will reward her abundantly for all she has done for humanity, her good will not be interred with her. They will remain worthy legacies and proud reminders that such a good woman lived amongst us.” I have lost a mother, ex-CPS Former Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain and one-time National Chairman of Alliance for Democracy, AD, Ambassador Mamman Yusuf, who was at a time Maryam’s Chief Press Secretary said, “My family and I have lost a mother, imagine the pain of losing a mother, it is unquantifiable. Tragedy struck last Friday at about 11:30pm as a 54-year-old man, Mr. Patrick Omini Ewoh, died having marathon sex with his 20-old heart throb at a guest house in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State. advertisement The late Mr. Ewoh was said to have met his untimely death when on that fateful day, he decided to have fun with his little damsel. An eye-witness told Daily Sun that the lover-man after he had gone out with his wife to visit one of the family friends, who lost the husband decided to drop off the wife and then called up the girlfriend on phone to meet him at their usual sex zone that evening. A few minutes after, the account continued, the young girl showed up at the guest house, located in the outskirts of Ugep, where they had treated each other to some bottles of beer spiced up with cans of energy drinks and suya in apparent readiness for the marathon. Having done with little entertainment, Ewoh, who was the treasurer of Ugep General Hospital, proceeded with his ‘baby girl’ to his hotel room for a short time. But barely 30 minutes, the young girl quickly dashed out of the room and headed for the road pretending she wanted to buy something outside. However, the burble burst when after about one-hour and-forty-minutes the man did not come out. One of hotel attendants tapped at the door persistently, but was shocked that there was no response from inside. The attendant forced the door open and saw to his chagrin the fun-seeking man panting and gasping for breath, perhaps after a round of sex. He quickly called up the owner of the hotel, one Mr. Thomas Eteng, a retired military officer, who in turn reported the incident to Ugep Police Station for necessary action. When police arrived the scene, they rushed Ewoh to Ugep General Hospital where doctors on call battled to resuscitate him but to no avail. Fearing that he might die at the same hospital, where he served as treasurer, the doctors advised that he be taken to Calabar General Hospital for urgent medical attention. However, 30 minute after they took off to Calabar, the ‘lover man’ gave up the ghost. A close relative, who was in the pick-up jeep that brought him back, confided in Daily Sun that the corpse had been deposited at Ugep General Hospital mortuary while arrangements are on to bury the late Ewoh. The relative, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the family is trying to fish out the girl and that they have reported to the police for necessary action, adding that the death of his uncle is a shameful thing that does not deserve public attention and wondered how the news leaked out to a journalist. When Daily Sun visited the Ugep Police station, the authorities refused to comment on the matter claiming that the matter has at Calabar Police Command.

It was a show of shame on Sunday when a woman who lied to her husband that she was going for a night vigil died in a popular hotel (names withheld) during a sex romp with her lover. advertisement The mother of seven identified as Modinat Alabi, 45, of Ereko Street, Fadeyi, Lagos, had lied to her husband a devout muslim that she was going for a night vigil but ended up lodging in a hotel with one Hezekiah Ladipo, 62, who also lives in the same street with the deceased. The duo, Daily Sun learnt, lodged in the hotel as husband and wife. Daily Sun also gathered that the suspect, Ladipo also is married with three children. It was gathered that on the fateful day, the two lovers had lodged in the hotel, at about 2.45 am. LOS ANGELES - Patrick Swayze, the hunky actor who danced his way into moviegoers' hearts with "Dirty Dancing" and then broke them with "Ghost," died Monday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 57."Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months," his publicist, Annett Wolf, said in a statement Monday evening. Swayze died in Los Angeles, Wolf said, but she declined to give further details.Fans of the actor were saddened to learn in March 2008 that Swayze was suffering from a particularly deadly form of cancer. He kept working despite the diagnosis, putting together a memoir with his wife and shooting "The Beast," an A&E drama series for which he had already made the pilot.Swayze said he opted not to use painkilling drugs while making "The Beast" because they would have taken the edge off his performance. The show drew a respectable 1.3 million viewers when the 13 episodes ran in 2009, but A&E said it had reluctantly decided not to renew it for a second season. When he first went public with the illness, some reports gave him only weeks to live, but his doctor said his situation was "considerably more optimistic" than that. Swayze acknowledged that time might be running out given the grim nature of the disease."I'd say five years is pretty wishful thinking," Swayze told ABC's Barbara Walters in early 2009. "Two years seems likely if you're going to believe statistics. I want to last until they find a cure, which means I'd better get a fire under it."C. Thomas Howell, who costarred with Swayze in "The Outsiders," "Grandview U.S.A." and "Red Dawn," said: "I have always had a special place in my heart for Patrick. While I was fortunate enough to work with him in three films, it was our passion for horses that forged a friendship between us that I treasure to this day. Not only did we lose a fine actor today, I lost my older 'Outsiders' brother."Other celebrities used Twitter to express condolences, and "Dirty Dancing" was the top trending topic for a while Monday night, trailed by several other Swayze films.Ashton Kutcher whose wife, Demi Moore, costarred with Swayze in "Ghost" wrote: "RIP P Swayze." Kutcher also linked to a YouTube clip of the actor poking fun at himself in a classic "Saturday Night Live" sketch, in which he played a wannabe Chippendales dancer alongside the corpulent and frighteningly shirtless Chris Farley.Larry King wrote: "Patrick Swayze was a wonderful actor & a terrific guy. He put his heart in everything. He was an extraordinary fighter in his battle w Cancer." King added that he'd do a tribute to Swayze on his CNN program on Tuesday night.A three-time Golden Globe nominee, Swayze became a star with his performance as the misunderstood bad boy Johnny Castle in "Dirty Dancing." As the son of a choreographer who began his career in musical theater, he seemed a natural to play the role.A coming-of-age romance starring Jennifer Grey as an idealistic young woman on vacation with her family and Swayze as the Catskills resort's sexy (and much older) dance instructor, the film made great use of both his grace on his feet and his muscular physique. It became an international phenomenon in the summer of 1987, spawning albums, an Oscar-winning hit song in "(I've Had) the Time of My Life," stage productions and a sequel, 2004's "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights," in which he made a cameo.Swayze performed and co-wrote a song on the soundtrack, the ballad "She's Like the Wind," inspired by his wife, Lisa Niemi. The film also gave him the chance to utter the now-classic line, "Nobody puts Baby in a corner."Swayze followed that up with the 1989 action flick "Road House," in which he played a bouncer at a rowdy bar. But it was his performance in 1990's "Ghost" that showed his vulnerable, sensitive side. He starred as a murdered man trying to communicate with his fiancee (Moore) with great frustration and longing through a psychic played by Whoopi Goldberg.Swayze said at the time that he fought for the role of Sam Wheat (director Jerry Zucker wanted Kevin Kline) but once he went in for an audition and read six scenes, he got it.Why did he want the part so badly? "It made me cry four or five times," he said of Bruce Joel Rubin's Oscar-winning script in an AP interview."Ghost" provided yet another indelible musical moment: Swayze and Moore sensually molding pottery together to the strains of the Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody." It also earned a best-picture nomination and a supporting-actress Oscar for Goldberg, who said she wouldn't have won if it weren't for Swayze."When I won my Academy Award, the only person I really thanked was Patrick," Goldberg said in March 2008 on the ABC daytime talk show "The View."Swayze himself earned three Golden Globe nominations, for "Dirty Dancing," "Ghost" and 1995's "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar," which further allowed him to toy with his masculine image. The role called for him to play a drag queen on a cross-country road trip alongside Wesley Snipes and John Leguizamo. His heartthrob status almost kept him from being considered for the role of Vida Boheme."I couldn't get seen on it because everyone viewed me as terminally heterosexually masculine-macho," he told The Associated Press then. But he transformed himself so completely that when his screen test was sent to Steven Spielberg, whose Amblin pictures produced "To Wong Foo," Spielberg didn't recognize him.Among his earlier films, Swayze was part of the star-studded lineup of up-and-comers in Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 adaptation of S.E. Hinton's novel "The Outsiders," alongside Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Emilio Estevez and Diane Lane.Other '80s films included "Red Dawn," "Grandview U.S.A." (for which he also provided choreography) and "Youngblood," once more with Lowe, as Canadian hockey teammates. In the '90s, he made such eclectic films as "Point Break" (1991), in which he played the leader of a band of bank-robbing surfers, and the family Western "Tall Tale" (1995), in which he starred as Pecos Bill. He appeared on the cover of People magazine as its "Sexiest Man Alive" in 1991, but his career tapered off toward the end of the 1990s, when he also had a stay in rehab for alcohol abuse. In 2001, he appeared in the cult favorite "Donnie Darko," and in 2003 he returned to the New York stage with "Chicago"; 2006 found him in the musical "Guys and Dolls" in London.Swayze was born in 1952 in Houston, the son of Jesse Swayze and choreographer Patsy Swayze, whose films include "Urban Cowboy."He played football but also was drawn to dance and theater, performing with the Feld, Joffrey and Harkness Ballets and appearing on Broadway as Danny Zuko in "Grease." But he turned to acting in 1978 after a series of injuries.Within a couple years of moving to Los Angeles, he made his debut in the roller-disco movie "Skatetown, U.S.A." The eclectic cast included Scott Baio, Flip Wilson, Maureen McCormack and Billy Barty.Off-screen, he was an avid conservationist who was moved by his time in Africa to shine a light on "man's greed and absolute unwillingness to operate according to Mother Nature's laws," he told the AP in 2004.Swayze was married since 1975 to Niemi, a fellow dancer who took lessons with his mother; they met when he was 19 and she was 15. A licensed pilot, Niemi would fly her husband from Los Angeles to Northern California for treatment at Stanford University Medical Center. In February, Swayze wrote an op-ed piece in the Washington Post titled, "I'm Battling Cancer. How About Some Help, Congress?" in which he urged senators and representatives to vote for the maximum funding for the National Institutes of Health to fight cancer as part of the economic stimulus package. He also appeared in the September 2008 live television event "Stand Up to Cancer," where he made this moving plea: "I keep dreaming of a future, a future with a long and healthy life, a life not lived in the shadow of cancer, but in the light. ... I dream that the word 'cure' will no longer be followed by the words 'is impossible.'"

Her distraught dad was at her bedside as she struggled for life on a hospital respirator. But she died hours later. Exodus was discovered at the house in Phoenix, Arizona, by seven-year-old brother Miguel who alerted their mum Monica Turner. Police Sergeant Andy Hill, who answered Monica's panicked emergency call, said: "It's so tragic. Exodus was playing by herself when she got tangled in the cord which was attached to an exercise treadmill. "It acted like a noose and she was obviously unable to get herself out of it. I pray to God she pulls through." Another neighbour, Ben Brodhurst, said: "She's a lively girl, you see her riding a bicycle from house to house." Tyson, who was jailed for rape and drug offences and banned from boxing for biting off part of rival Evander Holyfield's ear, recently said he had turned his life around because of his children.
