President Goodluck Jonathan has stressed the critical nature of the South-West to his administration, saying that the zone will not be left to “rascals” to rule.
Specifically, the President noted that Lagos State, being the commercial and industrial hub of the country, must be governed by the PDP.
Jonathan spoke on Tuesday in Ibadan, Oyo State during the commencement of his presidential campaign in the South-West.
The President said the party’s machinery would be legally deployed to ensure that the PDP governorship candidate in Lagos State, Mr. Ade Dosumu, emerged victorious in April.
According to him, PDP leaders “will not sleep” until power was wrested from the Action Congress of Nigeria in Lagos State.
He said, “South-West is the most important zone in Nigeria. It is the most cosmopolitan zone where all Nigerians come. It is a mini Nigeria and it is very unique.
“Major commercial activities take place in Lagos and its adjoining states. We are happy that we have a strong support base here. All we can promise the people of the South-West is transparent and good governance.
“We (PDP) must take over all the states in the South-West. The zone is too important to be left in the hands of rascals. We shall take over Lagos, Ekiti, Osun and Ondo states.
“It is true that we have our challenges in the zone, but we are on top of them all. We shall resolve our differences in our own way.”
Three of the four states mentioned by the President are governed by governors elected on the platform of the ACN.
They are Mr. Babatunde Fashola (Lagos), Alhaji Rauf Aregbesola (Osun) and Dr. Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti).
The fourth state, Ondo is governed by Dr. Segun Mimiko of the Labour Party.
Jonathan told the crowd at Mapo Hill that if elected in the April poll, his administration would improve the nation’s security, economy, power , employment, entertainment industry, transport and agriculture.
He recalled that his administration had injected about N500bn into the Bank of Industry to encourage job creation, adding that out of the sum, about N200bn had already been disbursed.
On transportation, the President said that his government had completed the refurbishment of the Lagos-Ibadan rail line which was started by the administration of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo.
He read the Riot Act to those behind the recent bombings in some parts of the country, saying the era of impunity had gone forever.
Jonathan said, “There are security challenges all over the world and our country has had its fair share. We must arrest those behind bomb blasts in our country no matter how long it will take us.
“The era of impunity is over. Security personnel are already on their trail and we shall arrest them.”
The President had while inaugurating the presidential campaign office in Abuja on Tuesday, said the PDP would win the presidency in April.
The host governor of the rally, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, in his goodwill message, said the re-election bid of the President was a foregone conclusion.
Alao-Akala recalled that Mapo Hill had played host to prominent politicians, who came to solicit for votes and won. Jonathan’s case, according to him, will not be an exception.
He said, “Alhaji Shehu Shagari was here. Chief Obasanjo and the late Umaru Yar’Adua were also here to solicit the votes of our people and they won.
“You will win. In fact, you have won the election because your case cannot be an exception.”
Alao-Akala argued that the recent sackings of some PDP governors in the zone did not reflect the potential of the PDP, maintaining that the party remained the party to beat in the country.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Dimeji Bankole, who was among those that were handed PDP flags to contest the April elections, urged youths in the South-West not to waste their votes on other parties.
Also at the rally, Obasanjo said that the emergence of Jonathan as President would deepen democracy and strengthen the country’s unity.
He, however, said that nothing should be taken for granted in PDP’s bid to win the presidential election in April.
Obasanjo said, “Nothing should be taken for granted. We know we have work to do. There are areas in this country today that are crying for attention.
“The areas include security, economy, corruption and infrastructure. These areas cannot and must not be neglected. I take solace in the fact that Jonathan has gone through a period of tutelage.”
The former president also called on the party’s leadership to ensure that all members, who felt displeased by the outcome of PDP primaries, were reconciled and brought back into the party’s mainstream
The reconciliation, he added, must be from the ward to the national level.
“Democracy is about number. We need everybody; the good, the bad and the ugly. We have been behind the scene in the zone before, we are now in the mainstream and we must remain there with the rest of the country,” he added.
Highlights of the rally included the handing over of the PDP flag to some candidates in the zone.
While Alao-Akala got the flag to contest the governorship election, Adetunji Olurin and Dosunmu were given the flags to contest in Ogun and Lagos states respectively.
But the presentation of a flag to Bankole took members of the party, who thronged the venue, by surprise.
The name of the Speaker was missing on the list of successful candidates in the recently concluded primaries of the party, which was released by the Independent National Electoral Commission on Sunday.
Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, who is the South-West Coordinator of the Jonathan-Sambo Presidential Campaign , and his supporters were absent from the rally.
Also, the Senate Leader, Chief Teslim Folarin, and other members of the PDP in Oyo State, who are against the second term ambition of Alao-Akala, also boycotted the rally.
A former presidential aspirant of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, Chief Harry Akande, was formerly received into the party at the rally.
Daniel, who addressed supporter at his Asoludero Residence in Sagamu, said he was prevented from attending the presidential campaign rally.
Accusing some people of ‘disorganising things’ in Ogun State, the governor said, “I pray that all the people that can make us to be annoyed may God take them away.”
He added that he was finding it difficult to understand the kind of luck that had befallen the PDP in the South-West.
He said, “I was about going to Ibadan and you came to block the way that I should not go, and I asked why. I was told the people of the state are annoyed and aggrieved.
“We have been ruling Ogun State with honesty and truth and the people of the state appreciated and commended us. But some people came and they were disorganizing things, they claimed to be God.
“I don’t know the kind of luck that has befallen PDP in the South West. People who stole from the nation are today walking free on the streets.
“In Ogun State as God liveth; we have been troubled since the past five years, they took us to court, brought EFCC and they could not do anything.”
He lamented the rejection of the list submitted to INEC by the PDP faction led by him. The governor said, “We conducted our primaries, they brought people to monitor it from Abuja, INEC, SSS, police and all witnessed it. Everything was recorded only for us to hear after about seven days that they were removing and substituting...
“Those who did not come out; those who did not know about the party and did not participate were said to have won the primaries. I promise that none of our candidates will be substituted.”

Nokia Finally Faces the Hard Truth

xlarge_nokiaburning2.pngNokia CEO Stephen Elop is pissed the Finnish cellphone maker relinquished their market dominance to Apple and Google. Real pissed. Fearing the company has reached a point of no return, Elop issued a no-holds-barred 1,300-word memo to employees, and seems primed to make some bold moves in the next week to help Nokia regain some of its former glory.

Bluntly stating that they've failed to compete with any of the major smartphone players, Elop, a former Microsoft executive, minced no words in the memo, which included the following bit:

"The first iPhone shipped in 2007, and we still don't have a product that is close to their experience. Android came on the scene just over 2 years ago, and this week they took our leadership position in smartphone volumes. Unbelievable."

Elop not only called out Nokia's lack of innovation in recent years, he even suggested that latching onto another smartphone platform was a possibility. Doom and gloom as this scenario may seem, it's actually a good thing for Nokia. We've been saying for a long time now that Nokia was traveling down a path of suck when it comes to their software. And finally, they realize change is necessary...radical change...

Elop compared Nokia's situation to a man on a burning oil rig who jumped from the rig's platform into freezing waters to save himself. He said Nokia is on a burning platform (which they poured gasoline all over) and it's time for them to jump.

Praising Apple's commitment to user experience, and Android's ability to attract the masses through innovation, Elop evaluated the current state of Nokia as well. While indicating that the MeeGo platform is promising, he worried MeeGo would be obsolete by the time a device hit the market, and conceded that Symbian's time has come and gone. Ultimately, he says a single product alone can't save Nokia, and that they need a unified ecosystem across all devices, whether it's one they create, or one they adopt.

While Nokia has tried to woo developers with Symbian's openness, the truth is that they've had an ambivalent attitude towards their smartphone OSes, and it shows. In fact, the main problem with Nokia smartphones is not the hardware. It's the software. The N8 and N97 phones were both well-constructed disasters, even by Nokia's standards.

When using their smartphones, rarely do the hardware and software feel like they're working together to deliver a quality user experience. It seems like if the internal hardware is up to speed, the OS is a mess. And when Nokia introduces something innovative on the software side, the phone lacks the proper hardware to make proper use of that innovation.

In the past, it was easy for Nokia to fall back on profits from international dumbphone sales. After all, they had the best-selling phone in the world. But now that the dumbphone market is drying up and smartphones are increasingly viewed as just phones by the average consumer, Nokia no longer has that security blanket. And in that spirit, Elop attributed Nokia's decline on a lack of leadership, a lack of internal collaboration and, most importantly, a lack of innovation.

Ah, innovation. Once upon a time, Nokia used to innovate. What Apple did for smartphones in 2007 with the iPhone, Nokia did for dumbphones in 1996 with the introduction of the 2160, which was lightyears ahead of most other phones. Even in the '00s they had some imaginative products; for example, the 6800, which featured one of the first foldout QWERTY keyboards on a phone, or even the N95, which made tech geeks swoon prior to the iPhone's release. But when the industry focus shifted to software, Nokia fell behind, because their strength had always been hardware.

Nokia says they'll start talking about the future on Friday. But where should they go from here? The possibility of Nokia functioning strictly as a hardware company sounds amazing. They make AWESOME hardware. They always pack great cameras in their phones. The build quality is always top notch. And when was the last time Nokia suffered anything resembling an Antennagate scandal? The only thing missing from their devices is a good mobile OS. If they adopt the Android platform (which would force them to conform to a set of required specifications) and put all their effort into hardware R&D, Nokia could really churn out some quality phones and tablets. Maybe then, they could become relevant in the tech world once again. [The Register via Engadget]

Chief Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion, the former governor of Edo State, who was arraigned at the Federal High Court, Benin City by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC over an alleged N25billion scam was absent from the court sitting on

Tuesday.

Dependable sources disclosed that Igbinedion, who refused to show up in court, was sighted in the company of friends and aides while paying a condolence visit to the family of late Dr. Abel Guobadia who died last weekend. He later drove away in a black Mercedez Benz 4matic jeep with registration AZ 200 USL.

The court sitting, presided over by Justice Adamu Hobon however adjourned hearing in the suit till March 26, 2011, urging the ex-governor to appear in court on the said date, after counsel to Chief Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion, Mr. Ricky Tarfa, SAN objected to the prayer of the EFCC counsel, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs, SAN that a bench warrant be issued for Igbinedion’s arrest. Justice Adamu Hobon noted that it was not proper in law for the accused persons not to be in court while their application is being decided. He ordered that they appeared in court on the 22nd of March when next the case will be heard in court. ..

According to the judge, “On the whole, having considered all the circumstances in the charge and the application opposing it coming for the first time for mention and counsel to both sides present in court, I order that the accused persons shall put up appearance at the next sitting and the application in opposition of the charge be heard in time without any further delay, pending which bench warrant will have to be invoked to compel accused appearance,” Justice ordered. Counsel to the prosecution, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN) had told the court that the preliminary objection filed by the accused counsel could only be heard in the presence of the accused persons and applied to the court to issue a bench warrant against the accused.

But Counsel to the accused, Rickey Tarfa (SAN) argued that their preliminary objection filed on February 4, 2011 was predicated on the fact that the fresh charges against their client was an abuse of court process since the accused person had earlier been charged. He argued that “no person should face trial twice for the same offence, since their application is already before the court; they did not need to be present in court. The issues at hand are constitutional and not procedural.

“The presence of the accused in court is not mandatory because the motion in court has been taken. It is after the court dismisses their motion that the accused persons can be made to appear in court, and then they can come forward and take their appeal. They have reported to the authorities.” Meanwhile, shortly after the sitting, at the Federal High Court, Benin, counsel to the EfCC,Rotimi Jacob, said the anti-graft agency has option to have arrested the accused persons and bring them to court, but expressed disappointed at his fellow counsel who had pledged an undertaking to the effect that they were going to bring them to court.

“Some of them were in court and all of a sudden when the matter was called they disappeared into the thin air”, he alleged. He further said, “His lordship has the option to order them a warrant but the court said they should be present in court. It is not just sufficient to fill a motion; they have to be present before the court. EFCC will not do anything that is against the laws of the land. No accused person will be tried twice for the same offence but the issue is the same offence, offence not similar, offences committed somewhere else. The fact that you are convicted for an offence A does not mean that you cannot go back for offence B and C so long as they are different offences”. Also, a member of the defence lawyers, Barrister Richard Oma Ahonaruogho, had assured that their client (Igbinedien) will not run away from justice and wondered why a man who in 2008 faced the same trail, pleaded guilty and was convicted and entered into a plea bargain with the sum of N500 million to the coffers of the government should be made to face the same charges, which according to him, amounts to double jeopardy.

“What else do they want from Lucky Igbinedion, we are saying enough is enough, he cannot continue to be castigated for his political belief and that is why he is in the court, we will never run away from trial”. At the court premises, a crowd, allegedly said to have been hired by Igbinedion’s loyalists displayed placards with various inscriptions, “Temper Justice with Mercy”, “Double Trial is Injustice”, “After Enugu, Let Lucky Igbinedion Have his Peace”, “Stop this Manhunt” to protesting against the continued trail of the former governor.

The woman, according to eye witness gave birth around 5.00 p.m. and was rushed to a nearby clinic, Folu Clinic and Maternity Home at Ile Bus stop by the BRT driver, Mr. Ifeanyi Agbadugo and some good Samaritans inside the bus.
The BRT is in the fleet of the Lagbus Asset Management Limited.
A large crowd was witnessed at Ketu bus stop who wanted to catch a glimpse of the woman who gave birth inside the bus, while shout of praises to God rent the air.
An eye witness, Mr. Godwin Ikpeakhai told P.M.NEWS that the woman gave birth in his presence. He said the crowd gathered around the bus when news spread that a woman had given birth to a baby inside the bus.
According to the driver of the bus, Agbadugo, the woman bought the bus fare ticket at Oshodi bus stop en route to Ikorodu and on getting to Ojota, the pains of labour gripped her.
“She got up from her seat and felt a sharp pain. There was chaos inside the bus and people started praying for her. On getting under the bridge between Ojota and Ketu, some women helped her to lie on the floor of the bus and she delivered at Ketu bus stop. The labour took just between five and 10 minutes.
“Her placenta was removed in front of the Folu Clinic by the nurses in the clinic,” he explained, saying that the way the whole thing happened was an act of God.
When P.M.NEWS got to the clinic, a woman was seen carrying the baby while her mother was lying on a bed. She was not strong enough to get up. Some of the women inside the bus went with her to the clinic.
Narrating her story, Abimbola, 27, who hails from Ogun State, said she works with GTB branch in Mushin and lives at 25, Oluwanishola Oladayo Street, Agbede, Ikorodu, saying that she was coming from work when the incident happened.
According to her, she had left office very early as she felt ill at ease and decided to make the journey to Ikorodu where she would then go to the hospital, adding that she never expected that she would give birth inside a bus.
“Normally, I don’t close so early; I was released from office. I am so excited and I thank God for the safe delivery. This is my second child,” said Abimbola, who married in 2008.
Husband to the banker, Mr. Olumide Abimbola rushed to the clinic from an assignment on hearing that his wife had given birth to a baby inside a bus.
He said that he felt so elated, while he was seen calling friends to break the good news to them.
Olumide, a Marine Engineer with Magnum International, an oil and gas company, said where his wife gave birth was not too important as his wife and the baby were okay and thanked God for the miracle.
Owner of the clinic, Dr. Tunde Babalola, said the clinic was fully prepared for such emergency cases.
He said that since the clinic was close to Ikorodu Expressway, there had been several emergency cases referred to the clinic which were always taken care of.
On the possibility of the baby being infected with a virus since he was born inside a bus, Babalola stated that the baby and her mother had been given some vaccines to prevent infection.
Saying he had been a doctor since 1976, Babalola disclosed that the clinic had been in existence since 1981 in the present location.

Islamic Scholar Shot Dead

A middle-aged Islamic scholar has been shot dead by armed robbers who invaded Aleke Village in Imota area of Ikorodu, Lagos, South West Nigeria.

Mallam-Abubakar-Gbagba.jpg?width=495

•The late Mallam Abubakar Gbagba.

The body of the victim, Mallam Abubakar Gbagba, was riddled with bullets by three armed robbers who rode a motorcycle and carried out the attack in the early hours.

The robbers, who escaped on the motorcycle after the operation, were apprehended at the next village called Isiwu by a vigilance group in their hideout. They were handed over to the Police at Imota Division.

The first wife of the deceased, Hajia Kuburat, who was with the deceased during the attack allegedly identified a member of the gang at the Imota Police Station.

The man, popularly called ‘Bebo’ was fingered by the woman as the person that shot her husband with a dane gun.

Narrating her ordeal in the hands of robbers, Kuburat said that the bandits mistook the polythene bag stocked with foodstuff bought on Lagos Island, as money and shot her husband in the chest when he told them he had no money.

“The three armed robbers broke into our house around 2.10 a.m. and shot my husband after they broke the doors. They later demanded for money and pointed their gun at my little daughter’s head before they took all the money in my husband’s pocket.

“When they were going, I pursued them to where the three of them climbed the Okada and I started shouting for help to assist my shot husband,” she stated.

Some of the vigilance group members who made statements at Imota Police Station disclosed that “all of us heard the gun shots since it was dead in the night and one of us who saw them returning with a bike to our village, Isiwu trailed them to their hideout and alerted us. We, along with other residents, surrounded their house and threatened to burn down the house if they did not come out.

“It was a big surprise to us that some of our members that were sent to Imota police station have not yet returned, but we saw a team of policemen from Shagamu police station, Ikorodu who accused us of beating the robbers and threatened to shoot us if we don’t give them medical treatment immediately,” a member of the vigilance group lamented.

“We were also surprised when one of the armed robbers, called Bebo, called the policemen to see what they have done to him while a policeman called Yemi threatened to deal with us if we failed to give him medical treatment immediately despite the fact that we told him that the robbers have just shot somebody dead.”

According to them, “it was the arrival of the police team from Imota Police station, led by the Chief Security Officer, Ibrahim that saved us from Yemi and his team who hurriedly left the place and disappeared.”

Confirming the arrest of the bandits, the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, of Imota Police Station, Mr. David Etim said the police had been on the gang’s trail for sometime and was happy that they were apprehended, adding that other victims of the gang’s recent attacks had started coming to the station to identify them.

It was also gathered that the gang recently invaded a church (name withheld) where they made away with N500,000, raped some female members of the church and later went to another house in the village to rob an old woman and raped her.

Meanwhile, the remains of the slain scholar has been released to the family by the police and buried near his house at Aleke according to Islamic rites. The robbery suspects would soon be transferred to the State Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS.

The trial of former Governor of Edo State, Chief Lucky Igbinedion and six others, over an alleged N25billion fraud by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) begins today at the Federal High Court, Benin. Michael, brother of the ex-governor and Patrick Eboigbodin were arrested on Monday by the EFCC ahead of their arraignment at the Federal High Court, in Benin. Others are GAVA Corporation Limited, ROMRIG Nigeria Limited, PML Securities Company Limited and PML (Nigeria) Limited. The suspects are to face a 66-count charge for alleged money laundering and diversion of funds from Local Government Joint Allocation Account. According to Mr. Femi Babafemi, EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, “The matter will proceed as planned at the court on Tuesday (today).” Recall that the Federal High Court, Enugu had on December 17, 2008 convicted the former Edo governor on a 24-count charge of alleged corrupt practices, where he was fined him N3.5 million by Justice Abdul Kafarati and three of his properties seized. The EFCC had appealed the judgment, when 23 of the 24 charges were against Kiva Corporation Limited, and made to refund N500 million. The anti-graft commission posited the Enugu verdict fell short of its expectations. Among today’s 66-count charges against the former governor are, “That you Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion and Patrick Eboigbodin between April and May 2007 within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did convert N250milion which you illegally derived from the Local Government Joint Allocation Account (JAAC) Edo State on the pretence that the said amount was for the provision of security during the 2007 Local Government Election in Edo State (which election never took place) and you converted the said funds with the aim of concealing the illicit origin of the funds and you thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 14 (1) (a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2004. “That you Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion between April and May 2007 within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did convert N287million to the use of Hon. Fred Okiye (the then Deputy Speaker Edo State House of Assembly) which you illegally derived from the Local Government Joint Allocation Account (JAAC) Edo State on the pretence that the money was for the payment of the Youth Empowerment Programme and you converted the said fund with the aim of concealing the illicit origin of the funds and you thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 14 (1) (a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2004. “That you ROMRIG NIGERIA LTD and Michael Igbinedion on or about 11th June, 2003 within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did retain in your account, on behalf of Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion N500million which sum you knew formed part of the funds illegally withdrawn from the account of the Edo State Government and you thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 16 of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2003. .. “That you Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion on or about 26th February, 2004 within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did procure Gava Corporation Limited (a company owned by you and other members of your family) to retain in its account, N60million which sum formed part of the funds illegally withdrawn from the account of the Edo State Government and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 17 and punishable under Section 16 of Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2003. .. “That you Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion on or about 15th July, 2004 within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did procure Gava Corporation Limited (a company owned by you and other members of your family) to retain in its account, an aggregate sum of N55, 307, 800 which sum formed part of the funds illegally withdrawn from the account of the Edo State Government and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 17 and punishable under Section 16 of Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2004.”

Report from Nigeria following the recent coup in Nigeria which was an army revolt against the corrupt Federal government. New head of government, General Ironsi, says he intends "to restore law and order" and not change Nigeria's external policy. The report contrasts the intelligence and idealism of the young officers with the corruption and nepotism of the old brigade of politicians.

Some questions, though.

1. Why, in your view, did Ironsi abolish the regions and centralize all government?

2. Was the Sardauna or NNDP in fact planning to crush opposition in the West militarily and was the officer that was murdered in the hotel referenced in the first video Largema? Was he sent with troops to crush protesters or was that a rumor?

3. Was Festus Okotie-Eboh as corrupt as he is made out to be (as in that first video, where they said he raised taxes on imports of shoes to help his own shoe business)? I read elsewhere that he was one of the richest men in Nigeria (worth 800,000 pounds) before government, i.e. that he made his fortune legitimately, but I don't know how true that is either....

4. In that second video, how do they know the people aren't celebrating only that Awolowo and Enahoro were released rather than the coup?

5. Where is the footage of Nzeogwu?

Is there supposed to be sound on the 2nd and 3rd videos?

The new salary structure for civil servants in Lagos State, South West Nigeria, promised by Governor Babatunde Fashola in his budget speech, has been unveiled, with the minimum wage pegged at N18,780.48.

Fashola1.jpg?width=495

Gov. Babatunde Raji Fashola

According to the details available to P.M. News this morning, Governor Fashola did not just keep his promise, he has offered government workers in the state, more money than the Federal Government has offered its own workers. For starters, Lagos has pegged its minimum wage some hundreds of Naira above the Federal minimum of N18,000, which many indigent states will not be able to afford.

With the new jumbo wage increase, a full director in the civil service on level 17 will now earn N4.17 million minimum and N4.5 million maximum annually. The director level is the highest for career civil servants. The salary of permanent secretaries, who are political appointees is not revealed in the new structure. But informed sources said they are already earning far above the maximum being offered to the directors.

The state government said last week that it would make the new package known to civil servants and the public this week.

It is now confirmed that the state government will pay N18,780.48 monthly as the new minimum wage for the lowest cadre in the civil service and a maximum of N19,599.80 monthly when the lower staff reaches the fourth step instead of the N7,500 previously being earned by the lowest cadre.

The new minimum wage is over 100 per cent increase in the salaries of civil servants.

The new package takes effect from last month. Since the old package was what was paid civil servants last month, the balance would be paid along with this month’s salaries.

The new wage increase has triggered joy among civil servants who had for long been groaning under the burden of poor salaries, with the attendant consequence of corruption and poor attitude to work.

Mrs. Ulelu Smart, a staff of the Ministry of Rural Development said she was happy about the new salary structure for workers, adding that she came to the civil service at the right time.

Another staff who worked with the Radio Lagos, Eko FM, who craved anonymity, told P.M.NEWS that Fashola had done well for increasing their take home pay, adding that it was a step in the right direction.

Also, a staffer of the Ministry of Information and Strategy was very happy that his salary had been increased and commended the state governor for the gesture.

A female secretary attached to the Office of the Chief of staff said at level 6, her monthly take home pay was N16,000, but with the new increase, she would now enjoy working in the civil service.Under the new scale, her new salary will be between N27,000 and N30,000..

For university graduates, the entry point has now been increased, from about N20-22,000 to N54-58,000.

In the current budget, Lagos plans to spend N120 billion on overhead costs. It is not clear whether the new structure will jack up the entire recurrent expenditure estimate of N198 billion. The Fashola government plans to spend N252 billion on capital expenditure and raise a bond of N60 billion to finance some of its capital projects....

At least eight people have died at the .University of Bening Teaching Hospital following kerosene explosions that rocked communities in Delta and Edo states in the past two weeks. The deaths were as a result of the severe burns sustained by the victims from the explosion.

The kerosene explosions occurred in Oghara, Delta state and Benin city, the Edo state capital. Six children of a police officer, Hope Adeleke, who lived in Oghara, the headquarters of the Ethiope West local government area of Delta state all died as a result of the explosion while cooking with with their mother in the kitchen with a kerosene stove. The children died at the hospital due to the severe burns they sustained when a fire sparked by the explosion ravaged their home.

The mother of the six deceased children, Edna Adeleke, who was also a victim, is still receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the Accident and Emergency Ward of UBTH.

Another woman whose identity could not be ascertained also died last week at the same hospital as a result of a kerosene explosion. The woman and one of her children were rushed to UBTH from Ekehuan village near Benin city following injuries they sustained from an explosion. The child was said to have survived after receiving treatment and has since been discharged.

Over the weekend, a 12-year-old girl from Kwale, Ndokwa West local government area of Delta state also died when a kerosene explosion reportedly occurred at her home. She was rushed to UBTH where she died.

According to the director-general of Save Accident Victims of Nigeria, Eddy Ehikhamenor, the 12-year-old received 93 degrees of burns on her body. Mr. Ehikhamenor called on the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation to warn all dealers and retailers against the adulteration of kerosene.

He queried the high cost of kerosene presently selling at between N130 and N150 per litre, just as he requested the NNPC to embark on an analysis of the kerosene currently on sale to ensure that the product does not have a mixture of petrol. Kerosene, the nation's main source of cooking for most families across the nation has been scarce, leading to a price hike.

HARD TO GET!

*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *

Being hard to get is a response to one of the most
basic truths of human nature:

Humans love a feeling of accomplishment.  We love to
work for something valuable and finally obtain it.

We tend to scorn what is handed to us too easily.
We rarely appreciate things which come too easily.
We value the things which are elusive - harder to
reach, harder to find, harder to get.

As humans, we are created to thrive on desire. Here's
a newsflash: You can't desire something you already
have!

As with many other realities of life, many people
are unhappy about this truth of human nature and
waste precious energy fighting against it. They
regard it with suspicion and even hostility - even
though the truth of it stares them in the face
every day.

They may as well be fighting against the sun rising
and setting, because their discomfort is not going
to change the facts of life!  There's just no denying
it - being hard to get is a fundamental principle of
human nature and particularly, romance. It can even
be the make-or-break factor.

Lots of books and articles say that they disagree
with being hard to get and "playing games," but then
they proceed to tell people to do the exact same
things that you do when you're "hard to get"!

By the way, when did "games" get such a bad name?
So games are okay when it's checkers, but not okay
when it comes to romance?  Gee, what Sad Sack came
up with that rule?  The kind of "games" we're talking
about will keep you healthy, happy, and having the
time of your life - and so will he.

This theme of human nature has been well known
throughout the ages of time. When you can't get
something easily - people want it more. Not only
that, but the price-tag goes up too. (Check your
local market.)

Hard to Get is a time-honored principle for a
reason - it has helped hundreds of thousands
of women to learn the meaning of valuing themselves
and using self-restraint and self-discipline when
some of their strongest urges could have resulted
in actions that would have NOT worked in their
best interests in the long run.

Love is a game - the
most wonderful "game" ever invented.  Play to win.
Play hard.... to get!

Man with 86 wives to sue INEC

The celebrated polygamist, Pa Abubakar Masaba, is heading for a showdown with the Independent National Electoral Commission and the police following allegations that members of his family, numbering over 5,000 were denied registration by suspected thugs in the just concluded voter registration exercise. Our correspondent gathered that suspected thugs allegedly thwarted efforts by members of the Masaba’s family to participate in the voter registration exercise at a registration unit in Bida Local Government Area of the state. Masaba is reported to have 86 wives. It was learnt that the thugs specifically prevented INEC officials from registering the Masaba family and that security operatives allegedly refused to come to his rescue. The lawyer to the family, Mr. Shehu Jubril, told our correspondent in Minna, Niger State, that over 10 hoodlums frustrated efforts of the Masabas to register. He alleged that the thugs, led by one Gimba, created pandemonium in a registration unit close to Masaba’s residence as they stormed the area beating and wounding members of the family who had queued up to register. He said the hoodlums overpowered officials of INEC and prevented them from registering Masaba’s family members. He claimed that about nine members of the family were wounded by the attackers, lamenting that despite complaints lodged by Masaba to the police area commander, nobody was arrested in connection with the incident. He accused the police of connivance and said Masaba had concluded plans to seek redress in court. He said the development amounted to a breach of fundamental human rights and assault. “The recent interview granted by the area commander in a local newspaper has however indicated that police have taken sides on the matter as he went on saying that the family has no business registering at their own Masaba ‘A’ polling unit”, he said. When our correspondent contacted the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Richard Oguche, he said he was yet to receive the report.. He said the district police officers would brief the command on developments in their various areas on Monday (today). Also, INEC state Public Relations Officer, Alhaji Abdulmalik Wase, claimed ignorance of the development and said he knew nothing about Masaba and his family.
