'To my Dear Obama, our son', says Gaddafi, defending attack on rebels
19 Mar 2011, 1757 hrs IST, AGENCIES
Calling Barack Obama as "our son", Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi sent a message to the US President defending his decision to attack the rebels fighting to overthrow him.

Gaddafi(68) also wrote a letter to the French and British leaders, and the UN Secretary General, saying the Security Council resolution was "void" and violated the UN charter, warning them that they would "regret" any intervention.

"Libya is not for you, Libya is for the Libyans," he said. .

Details of Gaddafi's letters were released by the Libyan government spokesman at a news conference in Tripoli.

Defending his decision to attack rebel cities, Gaddafi told Obama, "Al Qaeda is an armed organisation, passing through Algeria, Mauritania and Mali. What would you do if you found them controlling American cities with the power of weapons? What would you do, so I can follow your example."

Trying to strike a personal note, Gaddafi prefaced his letter saying, "To our son, his excellency, Mr Baracka Hussein Obama. I have said to you before, that even if Libya and the United States of America enter into a war, god forbid, you will always remain a son. Your picture will not be changed."

In his letter to Nikolas Sarkozy, David Cameron and Ban Ki Moon, Gaddafi said, "Libya is not yours, Libya is for the Libyans. The security council, their resolution is void because it is not according to the charter to interfere with the internal affairs of the country."

You have no right. You will regret if you get involved in this, our country. We can never shoot a single bullet on our people, it is Al Qaeda organisation."

12166300684?profile=originalThe glamorous lovers’ day celebration on Monday turned bloody at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) when gunmen killed two students. Daily Sun gathered that the clash was between two rival cult groups, namely, Black Axe and the Buccaneers,’ over a female student allegedly snatched by the Capone of the Black Axe for Valentine celebration.

The action of the Capone , the source said did not go down well with the other group leading to the clash.
A student who witnessed the shooting said besides the two cult members who were shot dead, about four others sustained injuries and were ferried out of the campus by their leaders to shield their identity.

The sources said the cult members who carried out the attack were not UNILAG students but members from another campus, adding that the attack was carried out in a commando style with sporadic shooting.
An undergraduate student of English Department told Daily Sun that the Buccaneers’ group attacked the Black Axe members while another student returning from the Mosque said those who carried out the killing were not from UNILAG because they did not cover their faces.

It was learnt that as soon the shooting started, students scampered for safety while others took cover behind the wall and under cars packed around, while others ran into the halls to avoid being hit by stray bullets.
A senior lecturer who confirmed the killings said the university management had met to curtail any reprisal attack while security personnel had taken over the investigation of the deadly cult clash.
When Daily Sun visited the troubled institution yesterday, there was uneasy calm, as most staff and students rebuffed efforts made by the reporters to get their comments.

However, one of the students who resides at Sodeinde Hall, said there was sporadic gunshots outside the premises which caused panic everywhere.
It was gathered that the crisis, which erupted when the students were at the peak of lovers’ day celebration, created stampede on the campus as people ran for safety.

One of the victims of the attack reportedly ran into Sodeinde Hall for help, from where he was taken to the hospital.
Although the Hall Master of Sodeinde Hall declined comments on the issue, one of the officials, who wouldn’t want his name published, said the attack could not be linked to any cult group. He said there was increasing speculation that the perpetrators of the attack could be fighting for love. Efforts made by Daily Sun our reporter to ascertain the identities of the victims were unsuccessful.
The news bulletin of the university, Information Flash (ISSN 08195540) also captured the incident, while assuring the staff and students of the university of adequate security.

“The attention of the universities authorities has been drawn to the incident which occurred in one of the Halls of Residence in the late hours of Monday, February 14, 2011 where two persons were reportedly injured in fracas. The university management has commenced investigation into the unusual incident, in particular at a time when preparation for the first semester examinations due to commence on February 21, 2011 are in top gear. Security has been intensified to ensure safety of life and property on campus. Law enforcement agents have been involved to assist the university in this respect,” it said.
Daily Sun learnt that students are leaving the campus because of the fear of reprisal attack while some parents called their wards on phone to return home until the situation is brought under control.

The Deputy Registrar Information of UNILAG, Mr. Dare Adebisi refused to pick his calls or replied to text message sent to his phone.
When the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Samuel Jinadu (DSP) was called thrice, he promised to contact the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the area and did not call back as at the press time....

The website-attacking group "Anonymous" tried and failed to take down Amazon.com on Thursday. The group's vengeance horde quickly found out something techies have known for years: Amazon, which has built one of the world's most invincible websites, is almost impossible to crash.

Amazon has famously massive server capacity in order to handle the December e-commerce rush. That short holiday shopping window is so critical, and so intense, that even a few minutes of downtime could cost Amazon millions.

So Amazon (AMZN, Fortune 500) has spent years creating and refining an "elastic" infrastructure, called EC2, designed to automatically scale to handle giant traffic spikes. The company has so much spare server capacity, in fact, that it runs a sideline business hosting other websites. Its customers include the New York Times, Second Life, Etsy, Playfish, the Indianapolis 500 and the Washington Post.

Until last week, WikiLeaks was one of Amazon's website-hosting customers. Amazon gave WikiLeaks the boot in the wake of the site's controversial release of a trove secret U.S. State Department documents...

That put Amazon in the crosshairs of Anonymous, a group that originated on image-board site 4chan.com, which organizes swarms to try to crash the websites of those it deems enemies. In the past, Anonymous has taken down several high-profile sites, including those of the Motion Picture Association of America and the Recording Industry Association of America.

This week, Anonymous launched takedown campaigns against organizations that have shunned the site WikiLeaks. Under the banner "Operation Payback," the Anonymous group successfully crashed Mastercard.com and strained the websites of Visa and PayPal. (Mastercard and Visa's transaction networks -- which run completely independently of their websites -- were unaffected.)

Anonymous makes its attacks not through hacking, but merely by directing a giant traffic surge to the targeted website. That's called a DDoS attack, short for distributed denial-of-service -- and it's hard for most websites to defend against. The attack itself isn't sophisticated. It's the equivalent of simply hitting the "refresh" button on a website thousands of times, which attackers use automated programs to do.

But Amazon's entire business model is built around handling intense traffic spikes. The holiday shopping season essentially is a month-long DDoS attack on Amazon's servers -- so the company has spent lavishly to fortify itself.

Anonymous quickly figured that out. Less than an hour after setting its sights on Amazon, the group's organizers called off the attempt. "We don't have enough forces," they tweeted.

Instead, they decided to go hammer PayPal's API, which seems to be holding up fine under the attack. "These attacks have at times slowed the website itself down, but have not significantly impacted payments," a PayPal representative said.

MEND threatens new attack

jpeg&STREAMOID=yCDGsfq7fNQNqin3K8zQny6SYeqqxXXqBcOgKOfTXxQc5DuYqMnIg2GPWnjbp0EEnW_PgxgftuECOcfJwS6Jtlp$r8Fy$6AAZ9zyPuHJ25T7a9GKDSxsGxtpmxP0VAUyHL6IDcZHtmM2t7xO$FHdJG95dFi6y2Uma3vSsvPpVyo-The Movement for Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND) today warned of another attack in Abuja, largely to protest the trial of Henry Okah in South Africa and what it said is the persecution Of ‘innocent people' in Nigeria..

In a statement sent by its usual spokeman, Jomo Gbomo, the group said it will "give a thirty minutes advance warning to avoid civilian casualties then sit back and watch how the blame game will be played out on all those already falsely accused."

The group, which also claimed the bomb attack (which it described as a perfect opportunity) in Abuja on the morning of the October 1, said President Goodluck Jonathan's presidential bid has been been brought above every other thing and that the federal government is involved in an "attempt to intimidate anyone opposed to the presidential ambition of Goodluck Jonathan."

Describing it as "hiding under the cloak of terrorist hunting and witch-hunting, by falsely accusing and harassing its perceived opponents," the group repeated an earlier claim that linking Raymond Dokpesi and Henry Okah in South Africa is a product of the Nigerian government threat to nationalize the South Africa communication group, MTN if South Africa does not follow its script.

NEXT's efforts to trace the origin of the email shows that although the Yahoo internet server through which it was routed is located in Spain, the person who sent the email did so from a Zoom Mobile modem here in Lagos.

Gay pastor escapes mob attack in Lagos

A 21 year old man, Elijah Adisa, who was .accused of sodomising teenagers for ritual purposes., narrowly escaped being lynched by a mob at Amai Street, Amukoko, on Thursday morning.

According to residents of the street, Mr Adisa, who was revered as a man of God, had been engaging in that act for a long time but luck ran out of him last week when his neighbours discovered he was having sex with one of the boys.

"We rushed to his house but he saw us coming and jumped the back fence of his house and ran away," said a resident of the street who did not want to be named.

Mr Adisa was sighted on Thursday morning in the area and it took the timely intervention of the elders in the community to rescue him from a gathering crowd that had descended on him. He was subsequently taken to the house of the Baale (community leader) of the area where some of the youth in the area continued to torture him.

Hypnotic act

Eyewitnesses accused Mr Adisa of hypnotising the boys before sleeping with them on a white cloth spread on the floor in his apartment.

Azeez Kareem, one of the boys who admitted being a victim of Mr Adisa's sexual acts, narrated what he experienced in his house.

"One day we were going to the field to play football when this man called us. He asked our names and our religion, I said Islamic and my cousin said Christian. He said I should leave. I went and came back and they were preaching. I don't know what they are talking," said Master Azeez, 17.

"One day, I just enter the house and I saw one boy. He told the boy to go outside. He then said I should go and buy Atare (Alligator pepper). When I came back he said I should pull my clothes and lie down on the floor, there was a white cloth on the floor. I don't know what he was doing. When he did that finish, he said I should eat the alligator pepper but I did not eat it."

Residents said that Azeez's cousin, Tunde, who had moved in with Mr Adisa for several weeks, had become a changed person in recent times.

"I just came back from school to see that my brother has started living with him. I didn't know him before. I asked my mother that this person that my brother is living with, did he know him somewhere before? She said no, that he is a prophet of God, that God sent him to help the boy. That was the first time I would meet that terrorist (Mr Adisa)," said Wale Razak, Tunde's elder brother.

Tunde was unavailable at the time of the incident; he had gone to write his General Certificate Examination papers.

"He (Tunde) used to be a very noisy chap but since he began living with the terrorist he became a very quiet person, he changed completely. And we were thinking the man was really preaching to him, we never knew he was using juju on him,"

Admission and denial

In absolving himself of any wrong doing, Mr Adisa denied indulging in any ritual act.

"Whatever they say, it is only God that really knows the truth. I did not run away, I went to the mountain to pray, at Osogbo. I only make sex with them," said Mr Adisa.

"I started doing it just this month and I've slept with only two boys. There is nothing like ritual. I don't force them nor give them money and I don't spread anything on the ground."

The beatings that Mr Adisa received from the mob, prompted him to excrete on himself; and the gathered youth proceeded to rub his mouth on the excreta before stripping him naked.

"It is very very bad and they say he is using it for money rituals. It has been going on for long but they just brought the matter to my attention and we have to take it very serious," said Jide Saliu, the Baale of Alafia.

"I have called the police under my jurisdiction. I will hand over everything to them. And I've talked to the Oba of Ijora and he said I should take the matter serious."

It was gathered that police officers from the Pako Police Post, Amukoko, arrived the scene later and took Mr Adisa away for questioning.

In this post we (UNIXY) are going to share our experience fending off a large Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack for a client. Generally, Website owners deal with DDoSattacks on their own. There are equipment and solutions vendors cater tothese owners and guarantee protection against these kind of attacks upto a certain threshold. The cost of hiring these vendors can range fromthousands to hundreds of thousand or millions of dollars depending onthe severity of the attack.

Our goal was to build a solution with the least amount of funds possible. This solution is scalable and can handle the worst attacks. The client’s dedicated server is not a special server but a simple quadcore Xeon managed server running the LAMP stack. The DDoS riposte described in this article can scale to stop a 10Gbpsattack or more. The good news is this solution does not require changinganything on the dedicated serveritself of the constellation. The server could be running just about anysoftware stack. This configuration will work just fine with almost allcases effortlessly..

  • Distributed Denial of Service – The Social

Before we delve into the glorious technical details, there is an important aspect of DDoS attacks that one should know about; that is thesocial dynamics that lead to the attack. The more one understands aboutthe the social aspect of a DDoS attack the easier it becomes to preventor stop it. Because once a DDoS has started, priorities shift quitedramatically and rational for making wise decisions becomes flawed.

DDoS comic

DDoS comic

DDoS attacks do not occur randomly. They are targeted and come with a motive. The motive could be revenge but most of the time the motive isfinancial. The individual or groups that conduct the DDoS attacks aremost of the time hired to complete the job. They have the resources andknow-how to orchestrate the attack while hoping to avoid getting caughtby the authorities. They have no emotional attachment to the DDoS attackitself; they have no hard feelings towards the victim. They just getpaid for what they do and nonchalantly, but meticulously, execute.

As explained, DDoS attacks are preceded by an email, post, or phone call, from the individual or group with interest, to the victim. It isalways recommended to treat strangers you meet online or offlineprofessionally and politely. The smallest altercation can lead to anegative reaction, which can escalate actions. In the face of anonymousthreats against your business or organization, remain calm and composed.

DDoS Offer in Forum

DDoS Offer in Forum

There are public markets online (please don’t ask for links) where wannabe DDoS perpetrators get to hire the attackers. Pricing varies from$5/hr to $10 for a simple non-distributed DoS attack. A DDoS, however, tends to be more expensive depending on the sheer amount of data orpackets that needs to be delivered at the target. It can range from$20/hr to $100/hr. The word used to in the circles in lieu of DDoS is to“drop;” meaning to drop a certain Web site or network off the Internet. It really means to either overwhelm the target with enough traffic thatthe equipment fails or to force upstream providers to “null route” thedestination IP at the network level. The end result is that the IP getsdropped from the routing tables and the server to stop responding to allrequests.

The fact that DDoS is not cheap has got to be comforting to an extent. It means that it is only a matter of time before the DDoS“client” runs out of cash. This in itself is encouraging. Keep that inmind should you begin to lose patience. Perseverance is omnipotent.Denial of service attacks are considered a crime and are punishable byFederal law in the US and by the police in the UK. As we will explain inthe technical part of this article, DDoS attacks are almost impossibleto trace to back to the individual or group that are orchestrating theattack. Because of the distributed nature, it requires cooperation fromseveral network engineers that work for upstream providers.

Distributed Denial of Service – The Technicals

First things first, What is a DoS? what is the difference between a DoS and DDoS? A Denial of Service (DoS) is an attack originating fromone source or one system that results in the service in question beingunavailable to its legitimate users. It denies its very users accesseither because the service runs out of available resources or has beentricked to deny access to legitimate users. For example, a DoS attack ona Web server can cause it to run out of resources and stop respondingto requests. A DDoS, on the other hand, is a more sophisticated attacksince the attack originates from hundreds or thousands or nodes.

A DDoS attack is almost impossible to trace back to the source due to its distributed nature. DDoS orchestrators call the nodes andcontroller system a “bot.” With a few commands, the bot owner caninstruct infected nodes from around the world to attack a target. Thebot systems are hosted and controlled via the Internet Relay Chat(IRC) system or via a direct connection port connection. The nodes usedto attack the target are made of compromised Windows and Linux nodesfrom around the world.

Before we present our solution, we need to discuss the two types of DDoS attacks that exist. On one hand you have attacks arebandwidth-based and seek to saturate the connectivity link. On the otherhand, you have attacks that are packet-based and seek to saturate theprocessing capability of the equipment. In other words, they seek tooverwhelm the processing power of the CPU and memory or fabricof the routers or switches. All equipment has hard limits when it comesto their ability to handle a certain number of packets per second.Routers and switches are no exception.

Capacity of networking equipment - Mbps vs pps

Capacity of networking equipment - Mbps vs pps

For example, take the above specification for a Cisco 6500 firewall. Each module is able to handle 5Gbps or 2.8 million pps. This firewall sure looks like it can handle a 5Gbpsattack. Great! However, should there be a packet-based DDoS attack, onewould only need a 1.5Gbps payload to saturate it. That’s 2.8 million pps* 64 Bytes = 1.5Gbps. So bandwidth capacity means nothing by itself andsmall packets can cause havoc.

Our client was facing a 2Gbps DDoS attack that is packet based. It sought to force routing equipment along the way to start droppinglegitimate packets. This caused the upstream to null route the IP toalleviate the burden on other customers that are behind the link. Thisis the typical reaction from all upstreams as they seek to protect theirmany other customers from feeling the pinch of the attack. We weregiven one last chance to “fix” things before the IP could be routed backin. Here is how we were able to fend off the attack and keep the serverrunning.

We have deployed what we call a “constellation” of reverse proxy VM or VPS nodes running the high performance Web server Nginx. The VM nodes werepurchased from several providers given they are located at separatefacilities. Essentially, we are off-loading and “splitting” both packetprocessing and bandwidth consumption across several data centerfacilities (physical routers & carriers).

Nginx constellation

Nginx constellation

The configuration of the Nginx nodes is a typical reverse proxy configuration with the usual extra kernel security configuration. So fora 2Gbps attack and with 20 VM nodes, the bandwidth consumption per nodeis a maximum of 2GBps / 20 = 100Mbps. That’s a 100Mbps load per VMnode, which is reasonable enough and is below the threshold for gettingone’s IP null routed by the provider. One could add more and more Nginxnodes to the constellation without issues.

So how is 20 VM nodes going to be affordable? VM prices have dropped dramatically over the last year. For the above configuration, a VM cancost between $5/mo and $10/mo. That’s an average of $8*20 = $160/Mo.Knowing that most DDoS attackers have the attention span of a gold fish, the $160 is all you need to send your attacker and his accomplicepacking.

Total cost for averting a 2Gbps attack

Let’s talk more about the Nginx constellation configuration. The Nginx front-end nodes will run in proxymode caching static files and requests. The more aggressive the DDoSthe higher the time-to-live for cache objects should be. This preventsthe Nginx nodes from proxy-passing requests to the quad core node.Although, if the main node has idle CPU and plenty of memory it wouldn’thurt to put it to good use to alleviate the burden on the Nginx frontnodes. Your domain’s A records is going to be the IP of the Nginx frontnodes configured in round robin fashion. DNS round robin has itsshortcomings in terms of not having control over how long (bad) recordsget cached by resolvers around the world. But in this case, it does notmatter much. Just be sure to set high TTL for the records so your DNSserver does not collapse under the enormous volume.

There are tons of online tutorials that go over the installation of Nginx as a reverse proxy so be sure to read up on it. But we will listsome of the peculiar settings that are needed to handle a large scaleDDoS. Of importance is the number of Nginx worker processes and workerconnections. Those values will need to adjusted gradually and higher tohandle different kind of attacks depending the VM resource allocation. But you should set them at least as high as the following:

worker_processes 8;
events {
.
.
worker_connections 4096; # Be sure to set ulimit -n 4096 or more
.
.
}

Keep in mind that one still needs to gear up for the event by setting kernel and system variables on the Nginx nodes. Simple things likeper-IP rate limiting, flooding rate limits, and syn cookies should beenabled without a question. Here are some measures you can implement:

net.ipv4.tcp_syncookies = 1
# source validation / reversed path
net.ipv4.conf.all.rp_filter = 1
net.ipv4.conf.default.rp_filter = 1
kernel.pid_max = 65536
net.ipv4.ip_local_port_range = 9000 65000

Recap.

In brief, here are the elements that constitute our solution:

  • Nginx reverse proxy constellation
  • DNS round robin records
  • Security at the Nginx front end level
  • Know the social and technical dynamics behind DDoS attacks

Seven killed in fresh attack in Jos

Seven people were killed on Saturday morning when unknown persons attacked Maza, a village in Jos North Local Government of Plateau State. The attack on the sleepy and mountainous village, also left 10 others injured, while some houses were burnt. "We are just coming out of the village; it is a difficult terrain really. There isn't much to say. This incident is just sad,'' Kingsley Umoh, Spokesman for the Military Special Task Force (STF) charged with maintaining peace in Jos, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). Mr. Umoh's figure, however, differs with that of the State Government, who announced that 10 people were killed while another 10 sustained serious injuries. Some reports said the dead included the family of a Christian priest. Witnesses said the men attacked the family of Nuhu Dawat in the village of Mazah, 12km (7 miles) from the state capital of Jos, killing his wife, two children and a grandson. The priest ran for his life, later telling Reuters: "I leave everything to God to judge." Plateau State Police Commissioner Gregory Anyating told Reuters the authorities were trying to find out "the root causes of the violence", but it had not spread to other villages. "The attack is nothing unusual; it is just another attempt to destroy the peace Plateau people have been enjoying in the past months,'' Mr. Gregory said. He said that those injured were being treated at the Plateau Specialist Hospital. "It is an embarrassing situation. Just when we thought we had found peace, we suddenly have to cope with another ugly situation," he said... The Commissioner, who appealed to the people to remain calm, and not to take the law into their hands, called for more vigilance from the STF to prevent a recurrence.

Saudi Arabia has conducted tests to stand down its air defences to enable Israeli jets to make a bombing raid on Iran’s nuclear facilities, The Times can reveal.

In the week that the UN Security Council imposed a new round of sanctions on Tehran, defence sources in the Gulf say that Riyadh has agreed to allow Israel to use a narrow corridor of its airspace in the north of the country to shorten the distance for a bombing run on Iran.

To ensure the Israeli bombers pass unmolested, Riyadh has carried out tests to make certain its own jets are not scrambled and missile defence systems not activated. Once the Israelis are through, the kingdom’s air defences will return to full alert.

Sources in Saudi Arabia say it is common knowledge within defence circles in the kingdom that an. arrangement is in place if Israel decides to launch the raid. Despite the tension between the two governments, they share a mutual loathing of the regime in Tehran and a common fear of Iran’s nuclear ambitions. “We all know this. We will let them [the Israelis] through and see nothing,” said one.

The four main targets for any raid on Iran would be the uranium enrichment facilities at Natanz and Qom, the gas storage development at Isfahan and the heavy-water reactor at Arak. Secondary targets include the lightwater reactor at Bushehr, which could produce weapons-grade plutonium when complete.

The targets lie as far as 1,400 miles (2,250km) from Israel; the outer limits of their bombers’ range, even with aerial refuelling. An open corridor across northern Saudi Arabia would significantly shorten the distance. An airstrike would involve multiple waves of bombers, possibly crossing Jordan, northern Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Aircraft attacking Bushehr, on the Gulf coast, could swing beneath Kuwait to strike from the southwest.

Passing over Iraq would require at least tacit agreement to the raid from Washington. So far, the Obama Administration has refused to give its approval as it pursues a diplomatic solution to curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Military analysts say Israel has held back only because of this failure to secure consensus from America and Arab states. Military analysts doubt that an airstrike alone would be sufficient to knock out the key nuclear facilities, which are heavily fortified and deep underground or within mountains. However, if the latest sanctions prove ineffective the pressure from the Israelis on Washington to approve military action will intensify. Iran vowed to continue enriching uranium after the UN Security Council imposed its toughest sanctions yet in an effort to halt the Islamic Republic’s nuclear programme, which Tehran claims is intended for civil energy purposes only. President Ahmadinejad has described the UN resolution as “a used handkerchief, which should be thrown in the dustbin”.

Israeli officials refused to comment yesterday on details for a raid on Iran, which the Prime Minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, has refused to rule out. Questioned on the option of a Saudi flight path for Israeli bombers, Aharaon Zeevi Farkash, who headed military intelligence until 2006 and has been involved in war games simulating a strike on Iran, said: “I know that Saudi Arabia is even more afraid than Israel of an Iranian nuclear capacity.”

In 2007 Israel was reported to have used Turkish air space to attack a suspected nuclear reactor being built by Iran’s main regional ally, Syria. Although Turkey publicly protested against the “violation” of its air space, it is thought to have turned a blind eye in what many saw as a dry run for a strike on Iran’s far more substantial — and better-defended — nuclear sites..

Israeli intelligence experts say that Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan are at least as worried as themselves and the West about an Iranian nuclear arsenal.Israel has sent missile-class warships and at least one submarine capable of launching a nuclear warhead through the Suez Canal for deployment in the Red Sea within the past year, as both a warning to Iran and in anticipation of a possible strike. Israeli newspapers reported last year that high-ranking officials, including the former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, have met their Saudi Arabian counterparts to discuss the Iranian issue. It was also reported that Meir Dagan, the head of Mossad, met Saudi intelligence officials last year to gain assurances that Riyadh would turn a blind eye to Israeli jets violating Saudi airspace during the bombing run. Both governments have denied the reports

Government to attack kidnappers' camps

The federal government is undertaking joint security operations to attack the camps of kidnappers in the south-eastern states, the minister of state for information, Labaran Maku said yesterday in Abuja.

Mr. Maku, who spoke with journalists after the federal executive council meeting, said government is also gathering information about where the kidnappers are staying. He did not however say when the operation against the kidnappers will start.

"The entire communities, especially state government, local government, traditional rulers, community organisation should cooperate," he said. "These criminals are not ghosts, they come from amongst our communities. They don't come from outside.

So, if the public can give cooperation and give sensitive information to security agencies, it will help these security agencies to cordon out some of these camps and flush out those who are engaged in this criminal activities.

This is a very serious matter because without peace and security, we cannot develop and nothing can be done properly," he warned.

The federal government, according to the minister of Information, Dora Akunyili also called on all the communities in the South-East and all other communities where kidnapping has become common to join hands with government and their traditional rulers to fish out the kidnappers.

The Council meeting, which started at five minutes after ten with the vice president and almost all the ministers in attendance, said the issue of kidnapping should be arrested once and for all.

While briefing journalists after the meeting, which lasted for less than two hours, Mrs Akunyili said President Goodluck Jonathan is sad over the increasing rate of kidnapping in the South-East.

Unacceptable practice

She told reporters that during the meeting, "reports were made about the security situation in Nigeria and the minister of police affairs reported efforts being made by Nigerian government to ameliorate the situation. The FCT minister reported that there is improved security in Abuja in the last three months.

President Jonathan expressed sadness over the rate of kidnapping, especially in the South-East and warned that something needs to be done to arrest the situation as soon as possible." She stated that though something is already been done about the situation, "what the president is referring to is that more efforts will be geared toward fighting the kidnapping saga in the South-East.

"The governors of the South-East are already working hard to ensure that this menace is curtailed to the barest minimum, or totally eradicated because it is unacceptable for any human being to pick a fellow human being in the name of kidnapping and demanding for ransom" Mrs. Akunyili added.

Mr. Maku, who was also at the briefing, added that the federal government has called on all communities in the south-east and in other parts of the countries, where security has become an issue, "to cooperate with security agencies that are already undertaking the operation to fish out the criminals wherever they may be hiding and deal with the situation decisively; because the issue of kidnapping is disrupting the normal life and commercial activities in some parts of those states and government cannot stay back and watch criminals take over the entire situation in those states".

Various criminal gangs in several southeastern states, especially in Abia State, are operating seemingly unchallenged by policemen deployed to the states. Many Nigerians and foreigners - including women and children - have been held hostage by gangs who are believed to have the backing of some politicians in the states where they operate..

Army, Police launch manhunt for Okah

The Delta State Security Council rose from a crucial meeting in Asaba on Thursday with a resolution to arrest a prominent leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta over Monday's bomb blasts in Warri, Delta State.

Leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, Henry Okah.

A source at the meeting who made this known did not give the name of the MEND leader. However, our correspondent noted through his description that Mr. Henry Okah was the ex-militant chief in question.

The source told our correspondent that security agencies had collated some intelligence reports on his alleged involvement in the blasts, which aborted a conference on amnesty in the oil-rich city.

According to him, the report showed that the MEND leader was sighted in Warri on the day of the incident, ostensibly to supervise the operation.

The source said, "We have a report that an internationally acclaimed MEND leader (name withheld) was in Warri in the early hours of Monday, apparently, to supervise and ensure the success of the bomb attacks.

"The security council rose from the meeting with a resolution to further dig into the intelligence report which indicted the MEND leader in order to arrest him .

"Since his group has claimed responsibility for the action, he (MEND leader) has to explain his business in Warri shortly before the bomb blasts."

But one of Okah's lawyers, Mr. Wilson Ajuwa, denied that the MEND leader was in Warri on Monday.

He told our correspondent on the telephone that Okah was in South Africa where he had been attending to his health since last year.

He said, "I can tell you, as one of his lawyers, that he has been in South Africa since last year after meeting with the President (Yar'Adua).

"So, to the best of my knowledge, he couldn't have been in Nigeria on Monday, let alone be in Warri. They (security agencies) should 'rearrange' their intelligence.

"Their claim is therefore far from the mark. He is still taking care of his health in South Africa."

The MEND leader is one of the militants who recently benefited from an amnesty granted them by ailing President Umaru Yar'Adua.

His involvement in the blasts is said to have dominated discussions at the Asaba meeting of the security council.

The council comprises heads of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigeria Police Force and the State Security Service in the state.

The state Deputy Governor, Prof. Amos Utuama (SAN), and the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Ifeanyi Okonwa, were among the top government officials that were also in attendance at the meeting.

Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan presided over the meeting, which was shifted from its normal venue in Warri to Asaba, due to security reasons.

Though the deliberations and resolutions of the meeting were not made public, the Commissioner, Delta State Police Command, Mr. Yakubu Alkali, confirmed the meeting but said it was not unusual.

He said, "The Delta State Security Council met in Asaba on Wednesday but it was a usual security council meeting of the state, which usually holds on Wednesdays. Naturally, the issue of Monday's bomb blasts in Warri was discussed, but the meeting was not convened primarily because of the Monday's incident.

"But since the issue (Warri bomb blasts) borders on the security of the state, it was discussed at the meeting. I don't want to speak further on the matter; as you know, security matters are not discussed on the pages of newspapers."

Meanwhile, ex-militant leaders in the Niger Delta will meet on Sunday to deliberate on the recent security breaches in the region, especially Monday's bomb blasts.

It was learnt that the meeting was at the instance of Chief Government Ekpemukpolo (alias Tompolo) and the Secretary of the Federal Government Committee on Peace and Conflict Resolution in the Niger Delta, Mr. Kingsley Kuku.

Alkhali, in a telephone interview with our correspondent, said that they deliberated on Monday's bomb blasts among other security issues in the state.

He, however, refused to comment on the details of the deliberations at the meeting and their outcomes.

The meeting is expected to hold at a coastal community in either Delta State or Ondo State.

It was learnt that the ex-militant leaders might also deliberate on the state of the nation and the implementation of the post-amnesty programme by the Federal Government.

A source close to Ekpomupolo said, "Former leaders of the freedom fighters in the Niger Delta are meeting on Sunday to review the security situation in the Niger Delta, particularly the Monday bomb explosions in Warri.

"The meeting will also deliberate on the post-amnesty programme, especially the fate of the ex-militant commanders in the plans of the Federal Government and the March 28 encampment of their lieutenants by the Presidential Sub-Committee on Disarmament, Rehabilitation and Re-integration of the former militants in the Niger Delta, headed by the former Minister of Defence, Maj.-Gen. Godwin Abbe (rtd.).

"But a decision has not been taken on the venue of the meeting, it will either take place at our leader's (Tompolo) place in Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South West LGA, or the place of our representative in the presidential sub-committee on disarmament (Kuku) in Arogbo-Ijaw, Ese-Odo LGA of Ondo State."

When contacted on Wednesday, Kuku confirmed the meeting but declined further comments.

Three weeks ago, gunmen attacked the Aninri Divisional Police Station, Enugu State, killed two policemen and injured three others including a female police officer. The gunmen did not only leave a tale of sorrow at the station but went ahead to set fire on all police patrol vans sighted within the vicinity at the time of their operation, which was reportedly executed in commando style. It was learnt that the gunmen stormed Aninri Police Station in exotic vehicles including a jeep and unleashed their superior firepower on policemen, who were on duty as of the time of the attack. Two of the policemen were caught by the bullets and they died instantly while others including the female police officer escaped with bullet wounds. The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Eneh, narrowly escaped from the gunmen. The gang, after setting the police patrol vehicles at the station on fire, escaped. However, a source linked the shooting at Aninri Police Station to a disagreement between two rival groups in Mpu community, the home of Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu. It was learnt that a self-acclaimed witch doctor in one group allegedly charmed a young man belonging to the rival group. In reprisal, the other group took laws into their hands and killed the said witch doctor. Following the killing, the police moved into Mpu town and rounded up some young men, believed to have participated in the killing and who it was gathered, were loyalists of some politicians in the area. Even as controversy over the killing was raging, a report came to the police station that robbers were operating in a nearby community. The police reportedly swung into action and gave the robbers a hot pursuit but the bandits abandoned their operational vehicles at a point in the same Mpu community and escaped. When the policemen could not get the robbers, they forcefully arrested some youths of the community and took them to the station. The arrest of the youths reportedly stirred up the shooting at the police station that led to the death of the two policemen. However Amaraizu said that only one policeman died in the Mpu incident. The police spokesperson told Daily Independent on phone that the manhunt for the perpetrators was ongoing. About the same period, Enugu State Focal Person of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Uche Ani, was also abducted from his Enugu residence by suspected kidnappers. It was gathered that Ani who rode on his official Land Cruiser jeep, was returning to his residence at No 38 Igbariam Street, Achalla Layout, Enugu, when he was waylaid by the kidnappers, who operated on a 604 Peugeot vehicle. The incident occurred around 9.pm. Just as the victim parked in front of his gate, the hoodlums parked their car beside his jeep, swiftly alighted and ordered him to come down from the jeep at gun point. As Ani came down from the vehicle, he was reportedly beaten up and forced into the Peugoet car before the vehicle sped off. Ani regained his freedom after spending a week in the den of his abductors. Daily Independent gathered that he has re-united with his family but the details of his release were yet to be disclosed by Police. The UNDP official added to the long list of those who had fallen victim to kidnappers in Enugu in the past six months. Other notable victims include Francis Edemobi, younger brother of Minister of Information and Communication, Prof. Dora Akunyili; South East Regional Manager of Guarantee Trust Bank, Kingsley Osuala; son of Ifeanyi Ononiba, an Enugu-based hotelier and Ngozi Ngene, the wife of chairman of Enugu South Local Government Area, Sam Ngene. Apart from Ononiba, who allegedly paid N5 million ransom to secure his son's freedom, police lived up to expectation in most other cases, setting the victims free and apprehending suspected kidnappers.

The police in Lagos have arrested a houseboy, Israel Adewale, for allegedly providing information and facilitating the entrance of criminals who robbed his master and battered his daughter. Adewale, who was rescued from remand home by his boss, Emuze Phillip, with the belief that he could be rehabilitated, was arrested with two other suspects, John Patrick and Dapo Sodiq. It was gathered that three robbery suspects raided Emmanuel Osakwe Street, Egbeda residence of Phillip at 12 midnight on Thursday without breaking any door. The suspects beat the man and his daughter who had just completed her youth service thoroughly and raided every room in the house before making away with valuables that they could find in their victim's Honda Accord marked HU 859 AB. Meanwhile, four young men are currently helping the Ogun State Police Command in uncovering the mystery surrounding two human skulls found in their possession in Ijebu Igbo by the police. The four men, including two herbalists, Tunde Ajenifuja, and Abiodun Adetayo, the police alleged, sponsored Shina Suleiman and Yomi Aregbe to source for the human heads for undisclosed reasons. In a statement in Abeokuta on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, the police claimed that the suspects were nabbed after an informant hinted the police that he had seen some men with human skulls in Oke-Agbo area of the town. He said, "Immediately, the police swung into action and arrested two suspects (Shina Suleiman and Yomi Aregbe). It was revealed that the suspects were sponsored by two herbalists - Tunde Ajenifuja and Abiodun Adetayo - who were subsequently arrested by the police with the human skulls."

WARRI — TWENTY-FIVE persons — six children whose ages range between two and seven; 11 septuagenarians, six women and two other villagers were said to have been killed yesterday when Kurutie community came under fresh aerial attacks by the Joint Task Force (JTF) on the Niger-Delta. Over 65 persons had earlier been killed and more than 100 injured since the JTF began its offensive against militants last weekend. However, the Defence Headquarters, while explaining circumstances that led to the all-out battle to oust the militants warned that the Nigerian military will no longer tolerate or watch criminal gangs slaughter its personnel without response. It also said no community, particularly in the Ijaw areas, was destroyed or razed down as claimed by many people in the battle area. Director of Defence Information (DDI), Col. Chris Jemitola pointed out that the JTF in carrying out its offensive, has ensured that collateral damage was kept to the barest minimum. A youth leader from the area, Mr. A.B. Okore was said to have led others to assess the damage done to the community and pick up the corpses yesterday. According to our source, the youth leader said: “This is genocide, the JTF should please stop the killing of innocent people, if they are looking for militants, they should go to their camps and leave our communities alone”. A JTF source told Vanguard however that what the JTF did on Sunday was a mop-up operation to strengthen its hold on the areas it was occupying, saying there was no attack on communities, except for a house in Kurutie where some youths fired at the soldiers who were passing with an helicopter and they returned to bomb the house. “It was because they fired at us that we defended ourselves and anywhere we see them with guns, we will attack them. You see, these militants live in these communities and their people are hiding them, so they should stop lying that the JTF is attacking innocent people. It is those who attacked our men, hijacked vessels and kidnapped hostages that we are looking for,” he added. Why we struck— Defence HQ Waving claims of genocide and carnage as mere propaganda aimed at protecting the militants, Jemitola said allegations of genocide are not true noting that before now, “we had appealed to the general public and the elders of these areas to appeal to these youths to stop these unprovoked attacks on military personnel carrying out their constitutional duties of protecting lives and property”. His words: “On the 13th of May, 2009, members of the JTF, Operation Restore Hope, on routine escort duties around Chanomi Creek were ambushed by a militant group leading to the unfortunate and painful loss of some military personnel. How militants tortured soldiers to death “Prior to this, an NNPC chartered tanker CM Spirit had been hijacked with its foreign crew and some Nigerians on board. This vessel was run aground by the militants, who also stole some of its cargo while the crew members were tortured leading to the death of some of the crew members and the rest held hostage. “JTF Search and Rescue team sent to free the hostages was attacked again by the militants. The search led to the discovery of a large cache of illegal arms and ammunition used for acts of criminality. It must be noted that at no time were members of the JTF aggressors, in fact, the JTF is only allowed the use of force in self defence or where arrest of a criminal is being resisted. Moreover, extra care is taken to reduce collateral damage to the barest”. Continuing Jemitola said, “instead, what we have observed is the deliberate and repeated unprovoked attacks on JTF troops, the sabotage of oil and gas facilities, the kidnapping for ransom of people and the killing of innocent citizens of the society including children, people of the clergy and very old citizens. “It is important to note that the Nigerian military has the constitutional responsibility of protecting our vital national interests wherever they may be. In the course of carrying out this responsibility, the military will no longer tolerate or watch criminal gangs slaughter its personnel without response”. Uduaghan meets Yar’Adua today Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State is expected to meet with President Umaru Yar’Adua today (Tuesday) in Aso Villa, Abuja, to brief him on the situation in his state and urge him, as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to direct the Joint Task Force (JTF) on the Niger-Delta to unlock the barricaded waterways of the state so that normal social and economic activities could resume after six days of fighting in the creeks. A competent source who confirmed the planned meeting to Vanguard said the governor left Warri for Abuja after the State Security Council, weekend, reviewed the security situation in the state and adopted some measures to contain the clashes, one of which was a mandate to some elders and youth leaders to reach out to the youths to cease all forms of confrontation with the JTF and destruction of oil installations. Gov meets stakeholders Yesterday morning, Governor Uduaghan held a meeting with the Delta Waterways Security Committee (DWSC), religious leaders and members of the Delta State House of Assembly. The three different groups commended the initiatives of the Governor in resolving the face-off between the militants and the Joint Task Force. National President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, (PFN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor led the delegation of the religious leaders, which included the state Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, (CAN) Archbishop God-do-Well Avwomakpa, Secretary of the Baptist Convention in the State, Reverend G. Oyibo among other leaders. Our source confirmed that the Governor briefed them on measures taken to bring the situation under control as well as the need for the ministers to pray for restoration of peace in the state and particularly in the troubled area. Soldiers invade refugee camp, warn doctors Hundreds of displaced persons from Oporoza, Kurutie, Kunukunuma and other Gbaramatu–Ijaw communities in Delta State fled their refugee camp in Ogbe-Ijoh on Sunday following the invasion of the camp by the Joint Task Force in search of injured militants. Vanguard gathered that the soldiers interrogated the doctors on duty for allegedly treating injured militants, an allegation they denied. Some of the displaced persons who spoke to Vanguard expressed anger that soldiers came to harass them, instead of sympathising with them over their plight. One of them, Mrs. Josephine Amazor who said she was yet to see her two children, four days after the attack on her community by soldiers said, “can you see, instead of sympathising with us, the soldiers are here to stop us from taking treatment, saying that they suspect that the hospital is treating wounded militants”. Spokesman of the JTF, Colonel Rabe Abubakar told Vanguard when contacted, yesterday, said that he was not aware that soldiers went to the Ogbe-Ijoh General Hospital to harass any refugee, saying that he would find out the true situation of things. JTF rescues four more hostages He however said the JTF has rescued four Ukrainian citizens who were taken hostage. He said the four expatriates were rescued around 4pm on Sunday. His words: “The latest group of those rescued are four Ukrainian citizens who supply fish to Nigerians on regular bases. They include, Mr Ponomarev Elman, Mr Mik Hailer, Mr Stroer Roman and Mr Vinogiador Mikael. These men have been doing business in Nigeria since 1993. According to one of them, they were abducted at about 0200am, 15 May 2009 along Chanomi Creek, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State.” Spokesman of the rescued group, Mr. Ponomarev Elman, who was also the Captain of the ship, MV Pusan Reefer, said they were 22 in the ship when militants abducted them. Speaking during the presentation of the four Ukrainians to the media at the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force, Major General Sarkin Bello apologised to the rescued men for the inconveniences caused them. The four rescued men were later handed over to Mr Tom Enegbuma, the agent and representative of the company, Super-Maritime Nigeria Limited. More troops deployed for ‘mop-up’ operation As the JTF continued its onslaught against militants in Warri South West council area of Delta state, more troops were deployed in the creeks yesterday in what was described as a mop-up operation. In reaction, the Izon-Ebe Oil Producing Communities Forum appealed to President Yar’Adua to intervene in the face-off between the militants and the JTF in the creeks. The forum stated that their appeal has become imperative as the violence has started affecting the relative peace in the entire area and would soon extend to the entire state if not properly handled. In a statement signed by the forum’s president, Chief Favour Izuokumor and General Secretary, Mr. Moses O. Edougha they condemned the hostilities as unwarranted and very disturbing, noting that innocent citizens are mostly affected.

LAGOS, April 5 (Reuters) - The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria warned on Sunday of a possible attack against diplomatic missions in Lagos, the commercial capital of Africa's biggest oil producer. In a message to U.S. citizens living in Nigeria, the embassy said it had received reports of a possible strike against missions located close to the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, situated in the exclusive Victoria Island neighbourhood. "U.S. Mission Nigeria has received reports about a possible attacks against diplomatic missions in Lagos located on Walter Carrington Crescent," the message said. Nigerian police increased their vigilance in the neighbourhood and called on U.S. citizens to report any suspicious activity. Nigeria is the world's eighth biggest exporter of crude oil which supplies the United States and China. Militants in the southern Niger Delta, the heartland of its oil industry, have carried out regular strikes against installations belonging to oil giants including U.S. firms. The main militant group in the region, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), dissociated itself from the threat. "Our struggle is a just one and our enemies are not the good people of America," it said in a statement. The U.S. embassy message gave no details of the nature of the reports it had received regarding the possible attack in Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation divided roughly equally between Christians and Muslims. But it said that U.S. government facilities worldwide remained in a state of heightened alert because of the threat of violence against Americans and U.S. interests.
