The race for the Vice-President’s position heated up yesterday, even as arrangements were made to lay the body of the former president to rest.PHOTO: NUHU RIBADU

It emerged yesterday that several groups used Mr. Yar’Adua’s burial as a forum to lobby and express interest in the job. Some of the groups who have started lobbying include the PDP, the northern political group, Arewa political forum, and the family of the deceased former president.

As many as 20 names were bandied about yesterday in the nation’s capital, and all the groups have drawn up shortlists which they will submit to the president.

Theophilus Danjuma, Yayale Ahmed, and Nuhu Ribadu have emerged as early favourites to be appointed vice president as early as next week. Other names that were rumoured were Aminu Masari, Nasir El-Rufai, Aliyu Gusau, Adamu Aliero, Bukola Saraki, and Isa Yuguda.

Theophilus Danjuma, a Christian northerner, would be a surprise choice, given that he prefers to be more of a kingmaker. He has certainly earned the president’s trust after he was named chair of the presidential advisory board.

Yayale Ahmed, the secretary general of the federation, has played a pivotal role in the transition of power to Goodluck Jonathan. He would be seen as a safe pair of hands to steady the ship over the next twelve months.

During Yar’Adua’s three month visit to Saudi, Yayale largely handled the administration of state affairs in the late president’s absence.

Nuhu Ribadu would be a populist choice and NEXT has exclusively reported that he was already earmarked for a role in Jonathan’s administration.

The intention had been to appoint him as a special adviser on anti-corruption, but the dynamics of power have changed in the past 48 hours. Widely seen as an incorruptible individual, his presence in the vice-president’s position would considerably raise the nation’s profile internationally. Furthermore, he would no longer have the stigma of a court case hanging over him, as the federal government officially withdrew all charges against him a few days ago.

The recently returned Nasir El-Rufai would also be a widely accepted pick. Unlike Ribadu however, he must still contend with charges brought against him by the EFCC if he is to realistically stand a chance. The former FCT minister has remained coy about his political ambitions over the next year, but has firmly stated that he would return in some capacity.

Aliyu Gusau has been more overt about his intentions for higher office, but he lost out to Yar’Adua in 2007 after contesting for president. He was surprisingly appointed National Security Adviser by Jonathan in February, and many saw that as a stepping stone to the vice presidency, and to something ultimately higher. At 68, Mr. Gusau is a shrewd politician and would fit in to the role with aplomb.

The Yar’Adua family is believed to have nominated the Bauchi state governor, Isa Yuguda, but his chances are not believed to be particularly good.

The former speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Masari, is a dark horse in the race, but certainly has the credentials to be considered. Another Obasonjo confidante, Mr. Masari has been a very vocal champion of electoral reform, a key policy in Jonathan’s fledgling administration. A Katsina State indigene, he is one of the suspended members of the PDP reform forum and had a poor relationship with Yar’Adua.

Mr.Saraki, a member of the Governors’ Forum, has long harboured ambitions for the presidency and this may be an opportunity for him to fulfil his ambition. The Kwara State governor has done some noteworthy things during his tenure, but Mr. Jonathan will be wary of the power that the Governors’ Forum wields.

The Egyptian child married last month in Abuja by Senator and former governor of Zamfara State, Ahmed Yerima is the 14-year-old daughter of M Eladly, his driver in Cairo, Egypt.
Marim Maged M. Eladly was brought into Nigeria alongside 32 members of her family for the marriage to the 50-year-old Mr. Yerima because he could not marry her in Egypt, as it is against Egyptian law for a man to marry a girl who is under 18 years old..

A United Nations official who was recently in Egypt told NEXT on condition of anonymity that the Nigerian Senator literally induced the poor family of the child to give her away to him.

Mr. Yerima had loudly protested that the age of his new bride was not the much-talked about 13, although he did not state the age of the girl.

“She is the daughter of Yerima’s driver in Cairo - exploiting further their vulnerability due to poverty,” the source wrote. “I couldn’t verify the payment of $100,000 (to the bride’s family), although some money may have been paid.

But, in this case, there is no broker involved, unlike similar marriages of minors to foreign men where the broker gets all the money and the victim and their family a pittance.

Some people who attended the marriage ceremony at the Central Mosque, Abuja, said Mr. Yerima personally admitted to paying the said sum.

“The marriage took place in Nigeria and there was no marriage in Egypt, as Egyptian law is clearly against underage marriage of girls under 18 years of age.

Although, unofficially through what is called “urfi marriage” or seasonal/temporary marriage, such marriage to minors continue to exist, particularly by older men from the Gulf States who come to Egypt for such purposes,” the source said.

“Furthermore, Egyptian law also forbids marriage where the man is more than 25 years
older than the woman, as is in this case. A Saudi Arabian man over 70 who married a girl under 20 years was prosecuted based on this law.”

Human rights petition

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had, Monday, forwarded letters to the United Kingdom as well as all embassies to revoke Mr. Yerima’s visas. The commission has also decided to re-draft and send another letter to the Egyptian embassy, following what they called new discoveries.

Miss Eladly, who entered Nigeria with a tourist visa, has returned to Egypt to continue her education after what sources said was a consummation of her marriage. She might, however, not be able to have her visa renewed, as human rights groups also said letters would be sent out to the immigrations office to demand such.

Women rise for Yerima in Zamfara !

Women, under the umbrella of Zamfara State Joint Youths Islamic Organisation, yesterday took to the streets of Gusau, the state capital, protesting against the child rights bill.

The protest followed the controversy surrounding the marriage of former Governor Ahmad Sani Yerima to an Egyptian minor.

Yarima’s action has been condemned by women rights organisations and other rights groups.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the protesters, comprising school age girls and women, thronged the streets in a peaceful demonstration against Yerima’s chastisement..

They went to the state secretariat, Government House and House of Assembly, waving placards with inscriptions that condemned the child rights bill.

Some of the inscriptions read: "No to Zionism", "Islam is my religion" and "We reject child rights act".

The protest, scheduled to terminate at the House of Assembly, rounded up at the group’s secretariat, following the refusal of the Assembly to grant the protesters audience.

The group’s leader, Hajiya Safiaya Haidara, said: "The child rights bill is a contravention of Section 38 of the 1999 Constitution which grants every Nigerian right to practice his or her religion."

Safiya, who was represented by the secretary of Muslim Sisters’ Organisation, Hajiya Binta Mohammed, described the bill as an infringement on Muslims’ rights to practice their religion.

The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Mr. Iniobong Ememobong, yesterday said the body would sue Yerima for contravening the Child Rights Act.

Describing the ex-governor’s marriage to a minor as demeaning and embarrassing, Ememobong said: "Nigerian students will not rest until Yerima is made to face the law over his despicable action.

"We do not want him to portray Nigeria as a lawless country. A man of his status is not expected to marry the age mate of his granddaughter, no matter the urge."

FG declares 7 days mourning.End of the Drama Free the President

Burial today in Katsina 2 p.m. • Jonathan to be sworn in 8 a.m. FG declares 7 days mourning, public holiday today

Exactly 70 days after he was flown back to Nigeria from treatment in Saudi Arabia, President Umaru Yar’Adua died on Wednesday night of undisclosed causes.

He became the second Nigerian leader to die of natural causes while in office, as the late dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha, who died on June 8, 1998. Other Nigerian leaders who had died in office were Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa Maj.-Gen. Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi and Gen. Murtala Muhammed. They were killed during attempts to overthrow their governments in 1966 and 1976 respectively.

Presidential Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi, told The Associated Press that Yar’Adua died at 9pm on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, with his wife, Turai, at his side. Adeniyi, whose voice cracked with emotion as he spoke did not give a cause of death.

By virtue of Section 146 of the 1999 Constitution, Acting President Goodluck Jonathan automatically becomes the President. It reads, ”The Vice-President shall hold the office of President if the office of President becomes vacant by reason of death or resignation, impeachment, permanent incapacity or the removal of the President from office for any other reason in accordance with section 143 of this Constitution.”

THE PUNCH learnt that news of Yar‘Adua‘s death first filtered out shortly after he breathed his last when some presidential aides briefed Jonathan and the National Security Adviser, Lt.-Gen. Aliyu Gusau (retd.), about his death.

The Federal Governmment immediately declared today as a public holiday. It also declared seven days of mourning, during which flags will fly at half-mast.

Yar’Adua spent much of his time as the governor of Katsina State (1999-2007) battling a kidney-related ailment. But his supporters he claimed had recovered sufficiently to contest the 2007 presidential election, after he got a kidney transplant.

At a point during his tenure as governor, Yar‘Adua spent six months at a stretch in a German hospital. But not long after he won the presidential election and was inaugurated, his health failed and he had to be flown abroad on a few occasions for treatment.

Although the exact nature of Yar‘Adua‘s frequent illness was never truly known, as his medical trips abroad were always shrouded in secrecy, the Presidency gave an indication of the nature of the sickness after he was flown to Saudi Arabia on November 23, 2009 for medical treatment.

His personal physician, Dr. Salisu Banye, told newsmen on November 26 that Yar‘Adua was being treated for acute pericarditis, an inflamation of the membrane surrounding the heart.

However, Saharareporters, an online medium, had, in a series of reports, insisted that the President suffered from the terminal Churg Strauss syndrome.

Last November, he was admitted to the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where he spent 93 days before being flown back to Nigeria under the cover of darkness.

After his return on February 23, he was kept incommunicado at the Presidential Villa and was shielded from his deputy. In fact, in an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation last month, Jonathan said the President‘s family was shielding Yar‘Adua from him.

He said he had only been able to meet with the President‘s wife while attempts to see Yar‘Adua and assess his condition were rebuffed.

Due to the uncertainty that surrounded Yar‘Adua‘s medical condition, the National Assembly on February 9, 2010 passed a resolution declaring Jonathan as the Acting President.

The news of the President‘s death immediately spread like wildfire across the country, with many Nigerians expressing shock and grief at the 58-year-old President‘s demise. Also, various cable channels across the world broadcast news breaks of Yar’Adua’s death intermittently.

Reactions started pouring in within a few hours of his death. Kwara State governor Bukola Saraki, who is also the chairman of Nigerian Governors’ Forum, said, “As a Muslim, the first reaction is that everyone will pay the ultimate price and death will come when it will come. The passing on of the President at this point in time in our national history is not only tragic but devastating. It‘s indeed a colossal loss to the nation and Africa.”

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, in his tribute, wrote, “What passes for the Nigerian nation is nothing more than a tragic arena, and Yar‘Adua is only the latest tragic figure. The vampires, including those within his own family, turned him into a mere inert resource for their diabolical schemes.

“They have a reckoning with their conscience, assuming they know what the word means. One can only hope that, while mouthing sanctimonious platitudes such as ‘Power belongs to God,’ they have now learnt that the politics of Do-or-Die cannot guarantee who does and who dies. They must stop playing God. I pray for the repose of the soul of their latest, much abused innocent victim. Wole Soyinka.”

In his reaction, Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko described the President‘s transition as a sad loss to the nation. Mimiko, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Kolawole Olabisi, described the late President as an apostle of democracy, who maintained a firm belief in the Rule of Law and fairplay.

In his reaction, Kogi State Governor Ibrahim Idris said in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Richard Elesho, “We would like to keep our fingers crossed, taking into cognisance that the power of life and death are the in the hands of God. We have to accept it as the will of God. We condole with the family and pray God grants them the fortitude to bear the loss. The man suffered for so long. It’s indeed a big loss.”

Obasanjo, a devil incarnate – CAN • IBB’s ambition, insult to Nigerians, say Bishops
Angry clerics have nothing but harsh words for both former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former military President Ibrahim Babangida over matters Nigeriana, a country they said the two men have misruled with impunity.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) labeled Obasanjo “a Devil incarnate,” for boasting in Washington last week that “not even Jesus Christ can organise acceptable and credible election in Nigeria.”

Babangida came up for blisters from Methodist Bishops for audaciously beating his chest that he wants to rule the country again, despite annulling the freest ballot it ever held on June 12, 1993.

They said it is “an insult to Nigerians.”

The CAN reacted in Kaduna on Sunday that Obasanjo’s mockery of the power of the righteousness of Jesus Christ is “a childish tantrum” unbecoming of a man God gave the opportunity to reform Nigeria for good but left it worse than he met it.

CAN Northern Publicity Secretary, John Hayab, said Obasanjo’s antecedents proved that he is an enemy of Christianity and has never been a true Christian.

He said other citizens, particularly Christians, should reflect on his actions when he was in power, citing the negative politics and political crisis the country went through during his administration.

He added that the problems of Nigeria partly result from his bad governance and undemocratic practices.

“This is totally a blasphemy of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, by a person whom God had on several occasions delivered from the valley of the shadow of death, as he (Obasanjo) stated in his inauguration speech on May 29, 1999,” Hayab fired off.

“Obasanjo must know that Jesus Christ has the power to save and deliver people from sin and condemnation, and He is still saving many in Nigeria today – and it is the prayers of those who have been saved by Jesus Christ that is keeping Nigeria moving from the clutches of bad leaders like him.

“How much more can Jesus Christ not conduct a mere Nigeria’s election?

“Where did Obasanjo keep the Biblical injunctions where Christians are taught to act justly, to love mercy, and work humbly with their God?

“We are not surprised because this goes to show us the genuineness of his ‘born again’ status which he is claiming.

“But we are deeply surprised by this highest degree of mockery of the efficacy of our faith by a man of his standing who, on many occasions, professed the power of God.

“By this we advise that his resident Pastor needs to counsel, pray, and put him in a deliverance class because it is an outright deviation of religion and the sacredness of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.”

Hayab recalled Obasanjo’s confrontation with the Plateau State CAN while in office.

“He did the same when he, out of pride and power intoxication, threw abuses at the CAN leadership in Jos. Now that he is out of power, it is Jesus Christ. So you can see how deep he has derailed, and in dire need of deliverance before the consequences of his actions and comments bring a curse to our dear nation.”

On Monday, also in Kaduna, Methodist Bishops kicked against the bid by Babangida to run for the Villa next year, wondering how he can dream of participating in a democratic process he does not believe in.

The Primate of Methodist Church Nigeria, Sunday Ola Makinde, said after a meeting of the Bishops Council that Babangida’s quest insults the sensibility of his fellow country men and women.

“The annulment of June 12, 1993 election led to the death and misery of millions of Nigerians, and it was during IBB’s tenure that the level of corruption was raised to the point which almost sank the country,” Makinde lamented.

He recounted that when Nigerians voted for President in 1993 (a ballot won by Moshood Abiola) they never considered the religious background of Abiola and his running mate, Baba Gana Kingibe – both Muslims.

Since both Christianity and Islam stress justice, Makinde said, the country’s leaders could belong to either religion, but regretted that Babangida has no regard for justice since he did not value the election that produced the Muslim/Muslim ticket of Abiola and Kingibe.

“IBB has a lot of things to explain to Nigerians on June 12, because we don’t want somebody that will come and annul election again. We have had enough of religious crisis in the country, we are talking about justice and righteousness. Our stand has nothing to do with religious coloration.

“We all voted for Abiola, a Muslim and Kingibe, his running mate, also a Muslim, so justice must be done for the June 12 election annulment. Our stand is that IBB should explain his role in June 12 because we don’t want a religious bigot as a leader in the next general election.”

Makinde’s remarks came four days after a similar outrage last Thursday in Benin, where some South West political personalities boycotted the launch of the “One Man One Vote” rally sponsored by Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, because of Babangida’s presence.

There, in person, Babangida had to endure blistering criticism, both for canceling the ballot 17 years ago, and for daring to seek public mandate to preside over the affairs of Nigeria again, in spite of it.

Speakers at the rally took swipes at him, kick started by former Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President now Secretary General of Organisation of Africa Trade Union, Hassan Sumonu, who urged Nigerians to never again allow any free and fair election to be annulled.

He said Babangida, “who annulled the June 12, 1993 election, is the cause of the problem Nigeria is passing through today.”

Human rights lawyer, Festus Keyamo, insisted that it is only one man, one vote that can ensure a corrupt-free government that would deliver on electoral promises and be accountable to the people.

“That is why we protest the presence of Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida who annulled the June 12 election,” he shouted.

Campaign for Democracy (CD) President, Joe Okei-Odumakin, equally drove home the message when she said Nigerians need a public apology for the annulment of the 1993 Presidential election.

“We need to know why we lost the man and the mandate of June 12. We need to know why the freest and fairest election was annulled,” she insisted.

However, Babangida told reporters at the Benin Airport on his way out that the speakers were entitled to their rights.

The beauty of democracy is that you agree to disagree, he added.

For more than nine hours yesterday, the former minister of the federal capital territory, Nasir El-Rufai was quizzed by detectives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission who had declared him wanted for allegedly misappropriating N32 billion.

Dressed in white caftan and a red cap, Mr El-Rufai arrived the commission’s Abuja office at about 10am accompanied by his lawyer and family members. He was only allowed to go home a little after 7pm, although it was not immediately clear whether he would be required to go back for more interrogation today.

The former minister arrived the country over the weekend after more than one year in exile and the EFCC directed him to visit their office on Tuesday to account for his tenure.

On his arrival, EFCC spokesperson, Femi Babafemi told reporters that el-Rufai will be questioned over the missing funds which dates back to his time as minister of the federal capital territory.

Mr el-Rufai was only seen to come out of the EFCC offices about three times to observe his prayers at 2, 4, and 7pm.

Though he declined to talk to journalists, el-Rufai’s lawyer, Abdulhakeem Mustapha told reporters who had gathered at the EFCC headquarters since early morning, that his client had submitted written statements to the EFCC...

Efforts to make the former minister address the press as he had earlier promised failed and he just entered an SUV which drove furiously away. In the process, a number of journalists crowding around the car were pushed down.

When asked if Mr el-Rufai was gagged by the EFCC, Mr Mustapha said “only he can answer that question.” Mr Babafemi also declined to confirm if the EFCC has placed a gag order on the former minister. He equally denied reports that the charges against Mr el-Rufai had been reduced, saying there was nothing of such.

Asked to speak on the journalists who were almost run down, an aide to Mr el-Rufai said the vehicle was actually driven by an EFCC operative and that his boss will not like to comment on it.

NEXT learnt that Mr el-Rufai was given an administrative bail, though neither Mr Mustapha nor Mr Babafemi would say when he is expected back.

Cecilia Ibru, former managing director of Oceaninc Bank, was also at the EFFC office today for a routine appearance which was part of her bail conditions. Mrs Ibru, who came in a black Lexus Jeep, almost fell as her aides tried to shield her from journalists during the five minutes visit. She refused to answer questions thrown at her, until a reporter asked if she knew the whereabouts, or had contacted her former nanny, Nanashetu Abdullahi. She gave a bemused smile and hurriedly entered her car.

Ecobank Loses 4.5Billion Year end Results

Eco Bank Nigeria Plc on Tuesday released its audited results for the year end 31 December, 2009 revealing a loss before tax of N5.944 billion and a loss after tax of N4.588 billion, disclosed Jibril Aku, its managing director yesterday at a press conference.

Mr. Aku said the bank had faced challenges just like every other bank in the industry following the banking industry crisis and the required provisioning for non performing loans.

“A major reason for the results is from the Fees and Commission section (which consists of trade transactions, payment turnover, compensation) which rose to N17 billion, from N10 billion the previous year and the provisioning we had to do.” The bank had an increase in its turnover to N59, 864.0 billion from N55.156.0 billion in its financial year end, 31 December, 2008. Fixed assets also rose to N21.382 billion from N18.818 billion in December 2008. Cash and other balances however fell to N9.524 billion from N18.768 billion in December 2008. Other credit balances fell to N38, 297 billion from N89.966 billion in December 2008 but the banks working capital increased by about 400 per cent from N33.416 billio in December 2008 to N172.442 billion in December 2009.

Mr. Aku said the bank did not really suffer any imbalance arising from the common year end as it has usually closed its books in December, yearly.

Moving forward

The managing director said the bank has experienced a few changes in the last one year, including the takeover of a new managing director, the introduction of three executive directors from other countries to shore up its Nigerian base and meet the present challenges.

“There were also changes in the local board like the board chairman and so on and some other people have also joined the board.

“We have slightly amended our businesses, following the happenings in the industry. Our services are now divided into two, corporate banking and domestic banking. The credit process is stronger now. There are now more portfolio reviewers, stress testing have improved, it’s a whole new remake now of the credit process to tighten it”.

“We want to promote the strength that we have. We hope that we see very strong trade links in Africa very soon. Our companies in about 30 African countries and alliances with NED Bank in South Africa and a representing company in Dubai and Eco Bank France are positioning us to be able to bridge financial businesses within and outside Africa.

Mr. Aku became the bank’s helmsman in March this year taking over from Offong Ambah who was elevated to Group Executive Director, Ecobank Transnational Incorporated in charge of Ecobank Capital.

Prior to this appointment, Mr. Aku was the Executive Director in charge of Treasury & Financial Institutions.

five-count complaint with crimes including conspiring to use weapons of mass destruction in what Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. called a “terrorist plot aimed at murdering Americans.” Speaking at a
news conference in Washington, Mr. Holder said Mr. Shahzad had been
talking to investigators and had provided “useful information.”
Officials had previously said that Mr. Shahzad had implicated himself
in statements after he was pulled off the plane. At the same time, President Obama said federal investigators were looking into whether Mr. Shahzad had any ties to terrorist organizations.

Mr. Shahzad, 30, a naturalized United States citizen from Pakistan, had apparently driven to the airport in a white Isuzu Trooper that was
found in a parking lot with a Kel-Tech 9-millimeter pistol, with a
folding stock and a rifle barrel, along with several spare magazines of
ammunition, an official said. He told the authorities that he had acted
alone, but hours after he was arrested, security officials in Pakistan
said they had arrested seven or eight people in connection with the
bombing attempt.

Pakistani officials identified one of the detainees as Tauhid Ahmed and said he had been in touch with Mr. Shahzad through e-mail, and had met
him either in the United States or in the Pakistani port city of
Karachi.

Another man arrested, Muhammad Rehan, had spent time with Mr. Shahzad during a recent visit there, Pakistani officials said. Mr. Rehan was
arrested in Karachi just after morning prayers at a mosque known for
its links with the militant group Jaish-e-Muhammad.

Investigators said Mr. Rehan told them that he had rented a pickup truck and driven with Mr. Shahzad to the northwestern city of Peshawar,
where they stayed from July 7 to July 22, 2009. The account could not
be independently verified. Mr. Shahzad, who lives in Bridgeport, Conn.,
spent four months in Pakistan last year, the authorities said..

The criminal complaint charging Mr. Shahzad says that after his arrest he admitted attempting to detonate the bomb in Times Square and told
investigators that he recently received bomb-making training in
Waziristan.

The detailed 10-page document tracks his movements in the days before
and after the failed car bomb attack, describing how he used a pre-paid
cellular telephone to contact the seller of the car and arrange the
purchase – and how the phone received four calls from 05bombspan2-cnd-articleLarge.jpg

a number in Pakistan hours before he made the purchase on April 24.

The complaint says that about an hour after the prepaid phone received the calls from the Pakistan number, he called the seller twice and
later bought the Pathfinder.

The complaint also describes how investigators were able to get the Pathfinder’s vehicle identification number – pulling it from S.U.V.’s
engine block -- even though it had been stripped from the dashboard
before the S.U.V. was left in Times Square. Investigators were then
able to track down the registered owner, who had passed the vehicle on
to another person, who in turn had sold it to Mr. Shahzad.

Mr. Shahzad seemed more interested in the vehicle’s cargo compartment and seating area than its engine, even though the seller warned him
that it had mechanical problems, according to the complaint, which said
he never lifted the hood to look at the engine.

And he did not take the car for a test drive the first time he examined it, although he did so the second time, on April 24, before he bought
it for the agreed on price of $1,300, paid in 13 $100 bills in a
Bridgeport shopping center parking lot.

At that point, according to the complaint, when the seller sought to complete a bill of sale, Mr. Shahzad told the seller there was no need,05shahzadmug-articleInline.jpg
explaining that he had his own license plate, which he displayed to the
seller, who then gave him the keys and he drove the car away.

The complaint also indicates that the Pathfinders’ windows were not tinted when it was sold, but that it had tinted windows when it was
parked in Times Square with the backseat and cargo compartment packed
with gasoline, propane, fertilizer and fireworks.

Faridaw Waziri

No 10 Porto Novo Street

A new petition to Acting President Goodluck Jonathan calls upon him to investigate the “massive fraud” going on at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission under the leadership of Mrs. Farida Waziri. Signed by Joseph Amadi on behalf of a group which calls itself the PUBLIC ACCOUNTABILITY LEAGUE, the petition alleges that Mrs. Waziri has been enriching herself by negotiating deals in cases before her in which she obtains huge commissions. .

The scams began soon after Mrs. Waziri assumed office, the writers say, alleging an “extortionist committee headed by Mohammed A Bako” that the EFCC chairperson set up which negotiated huge takings “in excess of 35%” for cheques recovered before she assumed office that were awaiting collection.

“Our investigation revealed that those who refused to part with any bribe compelled EFCC to discount their cheques with the issuing bank,” the petition says.

An important element in Mrs. Waziri’s approach to her job is the Anti-Corruption Revolution Campaign (ANCOR), through which she has sought to portray herself as being a forthright and dogged crusader. Indeed, according to the Public Accountability League, Mrs. Waziri has spent over N700 million on each of the ANCOR launches in Lagos and Abuja. It observes, however, “This was never provided for in either the 2008 or 2009 EFCC budgets,” and “the items used in the events never passed through due process as they were never advertised for.”

Turning to the bank reform programme initiated by the Central Bank governor, Mr. Lamido Sanusi, the group also alleges that Mrs. Waziri negotiated 10% from the banks as administrative fees for funds recovered. “Where are the monies recovered from bank debtors?” the group asks. “And how much commission did she charge these banks?”

The group also raises questions about Mrs. Waziri’s acquisition of property, alleging that since her assumption of office at the EFCC, she has bought several homes in Nigeria, the United Kingdom and Dubai.

Among the more stunning of the allegations, the group writes as follows: “Waziri has since February 2009 been receiving the sum of N50 million monthly from Intercontinental Bank Plc, N20 million monthly from Access Bank and NI0 million monthly from Skye Bank Plc. These monies, represent interests accruing to the over N300 billion recovered looted funds including the N17 billion from former Inspector General of Police, Mr. Tafa Balogun, placed as fixed deposits in these commercial banks by the EFCC. These funds, were supposed to be placed in the federation account instead of these commercial banks.”

The full text of the petition is as follows:

Fraud In EFCC- Farida Waziri's Penchant For Negotiated Commission On Recovered Funds

We are writing to intimate you of the massive fraud going on in the EFCC since Mrs Farida Waziri took over as its Chairman. This fraud has been ongoing but has reached a crescendo since the recovery of debts for the failed banks. When Mrs took over at the EFCC, she inherited several cheques of funds recovered by her predecessor which were not disbursed to the beneficiaries. On assumption of office, Mrs Waziri advertised that beneficiaries of the cheques should come forward to claim their recovered funds. Mrs Waziri immediately set up an extortionist committee headed by Mohammed A Bako. This group negotiated and collected on behalf of Mrs Farida Waziri in excess of 35% for funds recovered before beneficiary’s cheques were released. Several beneficiaries reluctantly parted with these commissions while those who rebuffed are yet to receive their funds. Our investigation revealed that those who refused to part with any bribe compelled EFCC to discount their cheques with the issuing bank. These banks were quick to accept EFCC request just to remain in their good books thereby violating laid down procedure by paying cash to EFCC for a cheque that belongs to another individual or company. These funds end up in the coffers of Mrs Farida Waziri. This practice has been ongoing and has reached an alarming proportion in the recent recovery of loans from bank defaulters. Mrs Waziri negotiates for 10% from banks as administrative fee for all funds recovered. Banks have not been able to complain due to threat and intimidation from the Waziri led EFCC. Most debtors like Henry Imasekha, Peter Ololo etc have parted with several millions to Mrs Farida Waziri.

We are attaching EFCC recovery list inherited by Farida Waziri. The list contains case file Nos. Exhibit Nos, Date Cheque/Draft was issued, Issuing Bank/Beneficiary, Amount and investigation Team.

In the recovery list No 60. A bank draft of N200million was issued to Delta State Government, List No. 71. A draft of N300 million in favour of Delta State Government and List No 83. for N200million in favour of Delta State Government totaling N700 million.

Mr. Acting President, please ask Mrs Farida Waziri how she disbursed the N700million due to Delta State Government. What role did James Ibori and Emmanuel Uduaghan play in this disbursement? How much did she make from the N700million?

How much percentage did she collect from companies like Nipco Ltd. and Jugi Mann International Ltd. who protested the extortion of Farida Waziri.

Where are the monies recovered from bank debtors? And how much commission did she charge these banks.

Mr. Acting President, you just inaugurated the code of conduct bureau to look into the assets declaration of civil servants, can you please ask Mrs Farida Waziri to present her asset declaration form when she took over and her assets to date both in Nigeria, UK and Dubai.

Since taking over as EFCC chairman in 2008, Mrs Farida Waziri has bought several properties both in Nigeria and the United Kingdom and Dubai. She bought from the FCDA a five bedroom detached house for N50.4 million at No. 10 Port Novo Crescent Wuse 2 Abuja by Red Cross office. She recently moved into the said 10 Port Novo crescent Wuse 2. This house is valued for over N450 million.

Mrs Waziris penchant to amass properties in Abuja continued unabated, She applied for properties with the FCT and it was approved immediately by then Minister Umar Modibbo whom she was investigating.
Waziri's Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) was offered to her the next day. The C of 0 read that she was allocated Plot 1460 of 25 Trent River Street, Maitama, Abuja with file number 60219 in Cadastral Zone, B06 of MABUSHI.

However, her plot soon assume a game of hide-and-seek. According to a source within FCT who knew about the transaction, Waziri and the former minister suspected that people were aware of the land allocated to her. Waziri, then, arranged with the FCT to change the ownership of her land. On October 13th 2008, the Federal Capital Territory Administration Abuja Geographic Information System (AGIS) wrote her a "withdrawal letter" titled "Notice of Withdrawal of Right of Occupancy", the short letter, addressed to Mr. Farida Mzamber Waziri, stated that her Right of Occupancy to Plot 1460 within B06 Mabushi was revoked by "DISCRETION BY AUTHORITY." The letter listed the Director of Development Control, Director Legal, and Director "URP" as the source of the letter.( Attached)

Two days after the revocation, the same plot was allocated to Waziri's daughter, Zainab Naomi Salawu. The same plot was now assigned a new file number GO 60167. In an attempt to hide the exact identity of the re-allocated land, FCT Officials gave the address as 2 River Trent Crescent, Maitama - Abuja.

Mrs. Waziri sent Mohammed A. Bako, the EFCC protocol officer, to sign a letter accepting the land. Bako, who signed on behalf of Zainab Naomi Salawu, gave his EFCC Office Phone Number 09-6441118, and Mobile Number: 0803-325-5447, his E-mail Address: abako@efccnigeria.org as well as his home address in Karu Phase 1 Area of Abuja.

Mrs Farida Waziri received a Mercedes Benz GL 450 gift from Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom to stop ongoing investigation against her and Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu on billions of Naira stolen by the duo from Akwa Ibom state coffers.

Waziri has since February 2009 been receiving the sum of N50 million monthly from Intercontinental Bank Plc,N20 million monthly from Access Bank and NI0 million monthly from Skye Bank Plc, These monies, represent interests accruing to the over N300 billion recovered looted funds including the N17 billion from former Inspector General of Police, Mr. Tafa Balogun, placed as fixed deposits in these commercial banks by the EFCC. These funds, were supposed to be placed in the federation account instead of these commercial banks.

Waziri has spent over N700 million each in the ANCOR launch, in Lagos and Abuja. This was never provided for in either the 2008 or 2009 EFCC budgets. All the items used in the events never passed through due process as they were never advertised for.

Mr. Acting President, we will avail you of more information and title deeds of the properties recently acquired by Mrs Farida Waziri in London. We have a very big surprise for you Mr. President, so that you will see the nature of woman that is heading one of the most important institutions in Nigeria.
It will be worthwhile if the fight against corruption is to be fought, let it be by people of integrity.

We wish you well Mr. Acting President and the world is watching you and commend your efforts in the sack of former INEC chairman, IWU.

Yours Sincerely,

For: PUBLIC ACCOUNTABILITY LEAGUE

"We definitely hit it off the first time we met," Pfeiffer tells Extra in an exclusive interview.

He also claims that Jackson’s doctor, Dr Arnold Klein, had seen the couple together. Dr Klein reportedly witnessed Pfeiffer and an allegedly shirtless Jackson together, and Extra quotes Klein as saying: “When you see two people looking at each other you know what’s happening. I was just very happy for both of them.”

May 3 (Bloomberg) -- Investor Marc Faber said China’s economy will slow and possibly “crash” within a year as declines in stock and commodity prices signal the nation’s property bubble is set to burst. data?pid=avimage&iid=i4LBAKz0cqkM

The Shanghai Composite Index has failed to regain its 2009 high while industrial commodities and shares of Australian resource exporters are acting “heavy,” Faber said. The opening of the World Expo in Shanghai last week is “not a particularly good omen,” he said, citing a property bust and depression that followed the 1873 World Exhibition in Vienna.

“The market is telling you that something is not quite right,” Faber, the publisher of the Gloom, Boom & Doom report, said in a Bloomberg Television interview in Hong Kong today. “The Chinese economy is going to slow down regardless. It is more likely that we will even have a crash sometime in the next nine to 12 months.”..

An index tracking Chinese stocks traded in Hong Kong dropped 1.8 percent today, the most in two weeks, after the central bank raised reserve requirements for the third time this year. The Shanghai Composite has slumped 12 percent this year, Asia’s worst performer, as policy makers seek to rein in a lending boom that’s spurred record gains in property prices. China’s markets are shut for a holiday today.

Copper touched a seven-week low and BHP Billiton Ltd., the world’s biggest mining company, fell the most since February on concern spending in the world’s third-largest economy will slow and after Australia boosted taxes on commodities producers. Rio Tinto Ltd., the third-largest, slid as much as 6 percent.

Chanos, Rogoff

Faber joins hedge fund manager Jim Chanos and Harvard University’s Kenneth Rogoff in warning of a crash in China.

China is “on a treadmill to hell” because it’s hooked on property development for driving growth, Chanos said in an interview last month. As much as 60 percent of the country’s gross domestic product relies on construction, he said. Rogoff said in February a debt-fueled bubble in China may trigger a regional recession within a decade.

The government has banned loans for third homes and raised mortgage rates and down-payment requirements for second-home purchases. Prices rose 11.7 percent across 70 cities in March from a year earlier, the most since data began in 2005.

The government has stopped short of raising interest rates to contain property prices. Within an hour of the central bank announcement on reserve ratios, Finance Minister Xie Xuren said that officials remained committed to expansionary policies to cement the nation’s recovery.

Stocks ‘Fully Priced’

The nation’s economy grew 11.9 percent in the first quarter, the fastest pace in almost three years. The government projects gross domestic product growth for the year of about 8 percent.

The clampdown on property speculation may prompt investors to turn to the nation’s stock market, Faber said. Still, shares are “fully priced” and Chinese investors may instead become “big buyers” of gold, he said.

BlackRock Inc. is among money managers reducing their holdings on Chinese stocks on expectations that economic growth has peaked. The BlackRock Emerging Markets Fund has widened its “underweight” position for China versus the MSCI Emerging Markets Index to about 7.5 percent from 4.6 percent at the end of March, the fund’s London-based co-manager Dan Tubbs said.

Industrial & Commercial Bank of China Ltd., China Construction Bank Corp. and Bank of China Ltd, the nation’s three largest banks, are trading near their lowest valuations on record as rising profits are eclipsed by concern bad loans will increase.

Local Governments

Citigroup Inc. warned in March that in a “worst case scenario,” the non-performing loans of local-government investment vehicles, used to channel money to stimulus projects, could swell to 2.4 trillion yuan by 2011.

Housing prices nationwide may fall as much as 20 percent in the second half of the year on government measures to curb speculation, BNP Paribas said April 23. Under a stress test conducted by the Shanghai branch of the China Banking Regulatory Commission in February, local banks’ ratio of delinquent mortgages would triple should home prices in the country’s commercial center decline 10 percent.

Shanghai is projecting as many as 70 million visitors to the $44 billion World Expo, more than 10 times the number who traveled to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. More than 433,000 people visited the 5.3 square-kilometer (3.3 square-mile) park on its first weekend.

Tears as Babatope, Igbinedion, others escape air crash

A former Transport Minister, Chief Ebenezer Babatope and Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, owner of the defunct Okada Airlines, were among passengers who narrowly escaped death, yesterday, as their Aerocontractors’ flight flew into a very bad weather on approach to land at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos.

Also on board the flight was Professor Olu Aina, who was said to be travelling to Ghana for an educational conference.

Vanguard gathered the plane, a Boeing 737, took off at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja, for Lagos at 7:30 a.m, and was expected to land at 8:30am, but could not.

The pilot of the aircraft was said to have made seven attempts to bring down the aircraft but was impeded by the bad weather.

A source told Vanguard that some passengers wept profusely as the pilot battled storming wind to land the aircraft.

The pilot was said to have called for emergency landing, prompting the activation of fire tenders at the airport to prepare for the worst.

According to the source, the pilot, after hovering for close to an hour in the skies, eventually made forced landing at 9:30 a.m.

Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Dr. Harold Demuren, could neither confirm nor deny the incident.

One of the passengers, Babatope, narrated his ordeal: “ What happened yesterday will shake anybody’s confidence about flying in this country. I have never seen that kind of thing in my life. The plane was parked full and everybody was crying and praying.”

“When we took off in Abuja, the pilot told us the flight would take 50 minutes and that the weather in Lagos was good. But as soon as we were descending to land the Lagos, the weather changed and the pilot made several attempts to land, but he couldn’t. For a 50-minute flight, I discovered we were two hours in the air, that was when the apprehensions of passengers started. Air planes are made to fly in bad weather, but what happened yesterday is better imagined.”

Besides human error, bad weather had been identified as the second most important cause of air crashes across the world.

The latest air crash in Russia which killed Polish President, Lech Kazhinsky, and his wife and scores of other senior government officials, was blamed on inclement weather..

The Tupolev plane reportedly crashed into trees while trying to land amidst bad weather.

Quite Strange that Al Qaeda is losing its touch as two failed attacks on American Soil have occurred .s-FAISAL-SHAHZAD-TIMES-SQUARE-large.jpg

A man has been arrested in connection with Saturday's attempted car bombing in New York's Times Square.

The suspect is Faisal Shahzad, a 30-year-old U.S. citizen of Pakistani descent. The Connecticut native was captured at JFK International Airport while attempting to board a flight to Dubai. According to a colleague, CNN's Deb Feyerick "reports the suspect was taken off the plane when he was arrested."

Statement from U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder:

Earlier this evening, Faisal Shahzad was arrested in connection with the attempted car bombing in New York on Saturday. Mr. Shahzad, an American citizen, was taken into custody at JFK Airport in New York as he attempted to board a flight to Dubai.

Since this plot was first uncovered on Saturday night, the FBI, prosecutors and intelligence lawyers in the National Security Division of the Justice Department and the U.S. Attorneys Offices in Manhattan and Connecticut, along with the NYPD have worked night and day to find out who was responsible for what would have been a deadly attack had it been successful. Over the course of the day today, we have gathered significant additional evidence that led to tonight's arrest, which was made by agents from Department of Homeland Security's Customs and Border Protection.

This investigation is ongoing, as are our attempts to gather useful intelligence, and we continue to pursue a number of leads. But it's clear that the intent behind this terrorist act was to kill Americans..

FBI agents are working with their state and local counterparts in New York, Connecticut and other jurisdictions to gather evidence and intelligence related to this case. We are also coordinating with other members of the President's national security team to ensure we use every resource available to the United States to bring anyone responsible to justice.

We continue to gather leads in this investigation, and it's important that the American people remain vigilant. The vehicle in Times Square was first noticed on Saturday by a citizen who reported it to authorities, and, as always, any American who notices suspicious activity should report it to the appropriate law enforcement agencies.

This investigation is ongoing, it is multi-faceted, and it is aggressive. As we move forward, we will focus on not just holding those responsible for it accountable, but also on obtaining any intelligence about terrorist organizations overseas.

Because of the fast-moving nature of this investigation, I am not able to make any further information public at this time. But the American people should know that we are deploying every resource available, and we will not rest until we have brought everyone responsible to justice.

Kidnappers Collected N2.15million Ransom On 61-yr-old Woman, But She Died Before Freedom

When news of the delivery of a new grand-child got to Madam Keziah Umeh, she must have been beside herself with joy...

feat1_24042010[1].jpg

This news, coupled with the fact that she had not seen the new mum in a while, informed her decision to pay her daughter a visit. She packed her personal effects and a few local food items not readily available in Kano, where the new mum resides. Little did she know that she was embarking on a journey of no return.

Several days after she left, two young men paid a visit to the home of Innocent Chukwu Umeh at Egbe road in Sabongari on the pretext of rejoicing with them over the birth of their new baby.

They came in a Golf car and one of them went to the door and knocked. Initially, Mrs Ifenyinwa Okafor, one of Madam Umeh's daughters, was reluctant to open the door for the strange visitor.

According to her, "the young man came knocking at the door, at the initial stage, I didn't want to open the door for him, however, when he kept on knocking, I decided to open the door.

"I came down and asked him who he was looking for and he told me 'Mama', he was speaking the Igbo dialect of Anambra; he was stammering, holding a bottle of wine inside a nylon. I asked him who he was and he told me that he knew all of us; he even mentioned names of other members of the family. That was when I became convinced and I opened the door for him," the woman said.

The strange man told Mrs. Okafor that he wanted to see 'Mama' to seek her help in preparing for his wedding. During the course of their discussion, she realised that some of the issues the young man was talking about was better addressed by Madam Umeh, so she directed him to where she was.

"After informing him of her whereabouts, he assured me that he knew the place and he went on his way. I even congratulated him on his upcoming wedding; he smile and went away," the woman told Saturday Tribune.

She further said, "Immediately he left, I went to the corridor to peep, but I did not see him again. I climbed the stairs and tried to look for him and that was when I saw one Golf car parked very close to a church, I did not pay much attention to it, thinking that the car broke down and the owner was looking for somebody to assist him.

"Suddenly, the car just came alive and drove off at top speed. It never crossed my mind that it was the car the young man came in. I went back to my task of preparing my mother's dinner. That was around 5.00 p.m.,' she said.

Shortly after that, Mrs. Okafor's husband called to say he was going to see his in-law who had called for him. He told his wife that he would give her the details of the visit upon his return. He later informed her that those same young men went to her sister's place, pretending to have come to rejoice with them on the birth of the baby.

Okafor immediately left for her sister's place and there, she was told how the young men came to the house and after being entertained, left only to return later, saying they had forgotten their car keys. When they were let into the house, they were brandishing a gun.

"The men said they had been sent to eliminate all of them, and that was when my sister broke down in tears and started begging them to take all the money she had on her. Meanwhile, they had instructed my mother to lie down and they had tied the houseboy's hands and legs.

"Later, they covered my sister's mouth, tied her hands and legs and told my mum to go with them. As she stood up to follow them, she was staggering.

"She was taken out and we did not hear anything about her until evening, some minutes after 8.00 p.m. that same Monday. They called to tell us they wanted N35 million."

By this time the family had contacted all other relations and they started negotiating with the kidnappers. The family told the kidnappers that they could only afford N5 million. The payment modalities of N2 million now and the balance later were agreed upon.

The kidnappers directed Mrs. Okafor's sister to bring the money to an agreed location and warned them against telling anyone about the incident. The entire family was threatened that they would be placing their lives at risk if they involved a third party. They seemed to get the message loud and clear, a fact that prevented them from reporting the incident to the police or involving them in the negitiations.

Meanwhile, Madam Umeh had not been enjoying the best health as she was said to be diabetic and had suffered a partial stroke. In a bid to get out of the kidnappers' clutches early, she was said to have offered an additional N150,000.

After the money had been handed over to the kidnappers, they called to say that the old woman would be released the next morning.

They called again sometime later, telling them to come and pick the woman at a private hospital along Hadejia road. On getting to the hospital, the family discovered the woman had died.

The Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), SP Baba Mohammed Azare, while speaking on the matter, said the affected family did not inform the police while negotiating with the alleged kidnappers.

"They were said to have been playing along with them, which didn't allow the police to intervene. Had they informed the police, it would have been easy to arrest them while the negotiation was going on, but they were doing everything on their own without alerting any security operative over the matter," he said.

The journalists, dressed in black and carrying placards, matched to Ladi Kwali press centre, Ikeja, Newswatch office, and the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters..

Police condemned for inactivity

Chanting anti-government slogans, the journalists displayed placards with messages such as, ‘Journalists are no longer safe in Nigeria’, ‘I.G of Police, save our souls’, ‘We journalists say no to the killings of our colleagues’, and ‘God save us from these wicked enemies of the profession’.

The murder of journalists is on the increase in the country, with the recent killings of a political editor at The Guardian, Bayo Ohu last year, and a judiciary correspondent for the Nation newspapers, Edo Egbagwu, ten days ago.

“Our members are in black, an indication that the atmosphere and indeed the working condition of journalists in Nigeria are not favourable to us,” said Mr. Garba. “Most importantly, we are in black because we have recorded quite a number of intimidation, harassment, and brutal killings of our members.”

While making reference to the more recent killings of Mr. Ohu and Mr. Egbagwu, at the Lagos State Police Command, where he delivered a letter on behalf of journalists for forward transmission to the Inspector General of Police, Ogbonna Onovo, Mr. Garba expressed dismay with the police’s failure to find those responsible for the killing of journalists in the country.

“We have not seen a very serious commitment on the sides of the security agencies to fish out the killers of these our colleagues; journalists in Nigeria, I must say, we are no longer safe,” he said.

‘Police encourage the killing of journalists’

Mr. Garba further described police inefficiency as responsible for the continued trend of journalists’ killings by people he said were “threatened by journalism,” adding that the press would not be intimidated by the incidents.

“I want to believe that most of those who perpetrate these actions are either politicians, or people who feel that we are threats to their continuous existence in this country, and I want to say with all seriousness that we are not going to be scared by these actions; rather journalists are further encouraged with these tendencies which we have seen,” he said.

Solomon Arase, the deputy commissioner for police, who represented the state commissioner of police, Marvel Akpoyibo, said the police were doing their best to find the culprits responsible for the recent killings of journalists.

“We are greatly pained by the death of your colleagues and we’ve been working tirelessly to ensure that, in the end, we are able to arrest the perpetrators,” said Mr. Arase, adding that the State Police Command’s extension of invitation to journalists from the Nation newspaper to join in the investigation was to demonstrate transparency of purpose on the part of the police.

‘Police must be made to act’

However a journalist from ThisDay newspaper, Gboyega Akinsanmi, who spoke to NEXT after the march, said the police have been inactive for too long, and must now awaken to their responsibilities.

“It’s become so important for us to come out to condemn the killings of our colleagues, because it’s high time the perpetrators were brought to book,” he said.

“In all the killings, no perpetrator has ever been brought to book. We are demanding that the security agencies ensure that the masterminds are brought to book, so there will be security for journalists and their families across the country.”
