I realized that in my blog post, “Why Don’t the Cops Ever Kill White People?” I didn’t exactly go into detail about how the cops get away with killing you. Well in this post, I intend to do just that. It’s actually a 4-step process.Danroy.jpg

Step 1: Criminalize the Victim: Almost immediately following the murder by police of Patrick Dorismond, then-New York mayor Rudy Giuliani rushed to say of Dorismond “He was no choirboy.” Mr Dorismond had become so offended at the suggestion that he was a drug peddler that he fist-fought the white undercover officer that attempted to solicit a drug sale. The white officer, not taking too kindly to the beat-down, shot and killed Mr. Dorismond. It turned out however that Mr. Dorismond had an arrest record. Sean Bell also had an arrest record. So do I. So does just about every Black man that I know. When you think about it, it almost seems as if the cops arrest Black men just in case we ever need to be murdered.

Step 2: Humanize the Murder: The poor guy. He’s a husband and a father with 20 years on The Force and he never even used his gun before this incident. This is just killing him inside. Try to imagine how his family must feel.

Step 3: Kill Somebody Else Immediately: In almost every case, most specifically in the Diallo, Dorismond and Bell cases, members of the NYPD shot and wounded or killed another person of color very shortly afterward. This is done for two reasons: first, it sends the message that just because the police may indeed have made a tragic mistake, that doesn’t mean that they intend to become soft on crime. Second, it demonstrates that there really are some bad people out there. People that deserve to get shot and killed. People that, interestingly enough, look just like the person that was “accidentally” killed not long before. See how easily such mistakes can be made?

Step 4: Location, Location, Location: If the cops absolutely have to go to trial and the case(s) falls outside the jurisdiction of internal review, it is always made certain (see: Rodney King) that the trial(s) is held somewhere where neighbors are separated by entirely different addresses as opposed to just apartment numbers..

I write all this because, of course, before the keys went cold on my computer from my last murdering police-related blog, they were at it again. This time, 20 year-old college football player Danroy Henry was meeting up with a former high school teammate that he was now about to face on the field as their college teams prepared to collide. An unrelated fight broke out and when the cops came, they ordered young Danroy to move his car. When he complied, they shot and killed him.

Crocodile on plane kills 19 passengers

678867-croc.jpgA STOWAWAY crocodile on a flight escaped from its carrier bag and sparked an onboard stampede that caused the flight to crash, killing 19 passengers and crew.

The croc had been hidden in a passenger's sports bag - allegedly with plans to sell it - but it tore loose and ran amok, sparking panic.

A stampede of terrified passengers caused the small aircraft to lose balance and tip over in mid-air during an internal flight in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The unbalanced load caused the aircraft, on a routine flight from the capital, Kinshasa, to the regional airport at Bandundu, to go into a spin and crash into a house.

A lone survivor from the Let 410 plane told the astonishing tale to investigators.

Ironically the crocodile also survived the crash but was later killed with a machete by rescuers sifting through the wreckage.

British pilot Chris Wilson, 39, from Shurdington, near Cheltenham, Glocs was acting as the plane's first officer alongside Belgian pilot Danny Philemotte, 62, who was owner of the plane's operator Filair.

The plane smashed into an empty house just a few hundred metres from its destination.

"According to the inquiry report and the testimony of the only survivor, the crash happened because of a panic sparked by the escape of a crocodile hidden in a sports bag,” news organisation Jeune Afrique reported.

"One of the passengers had hidden the animal, which he planned to sell, in a big sports bag, from which the reptile escaped as the plane began its descent into Bandundu.

"The terrified air hostess hurried towards the cockpit, followed by the passengers."

The plane was then sent off-balance "despite the desperate efforts of the pilot", said the report.

"The crocodile survived the crash before being cut up with a machete."

The plane was a Czech-made Let L-410 Turbolet, one of more than 1,100 produced as short-range transport aircraft and used mainly for passenger services...

kpakol.jpgDr. Moses Kpakol, National Coordinator of the National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP) seems to be swimming from one tide of fraud to another, as the head of an agency (created by Executive fiat and with no governing laws) to reduce poverty, is himself impoverishing not only Nigerians but also the government.

To stem the tide of the discoveries of abnormalities, especially a staggering debt of N417m yet to be paid by Keke Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria KORAN, Kpakol set up a committee to look into the case. The committee came up with a damning report that pointed fingers at Dr. Kpakol, and thus throwing the agency office in Abuja into confusion.

The investigating committee found out to their chagrin that Dr. Kpakol was funding a faction of (KORAN) and formed a rival company called Trimidan Ltd, with the aim of sidelining Autobahn Techniques Limited, the Government approved firm and the initiator of the Keke NAPEP concept, which proposed the idea to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, in the year 2000.

The Dr. Kpakol led firm is indeed being used to siphon the agency’s funds. According to the report made available to Huhuonline, the Dr. Kpakol crony who doubles as KORAN factional President Alhaji Bashir Akinola in response to the question posed to him as to how much has been remitted to NAPEP, claimed “we have remitted the sum of N128,506,500 three times and N90,000,000 once, thus leaving an outstanding balance of N326,523,219.5”. Whereas, when the committee requested for evidence of this payment, KORAN could not produce any.

What struck the committee again was the deceit of KORAN led by Alhaji Akinola, and the inexplicable alliance with Dr. Kpakol. This became evident when the committee visited the purported office of KORAN at Otta, “the team was struck by the edifice which was not called KORAN office but Trimidan Limited, a private Limited Liability Company owned by Alhaji Akinola”, on behalf of Kpakol.

According to the report, “another observation of the team was that, this new company, Trimidan Limited was currently assembling KEKE tricycles, painted them in national colours and titled the KEKE NAPEP, yet NAPEP as government agency was not aware of such assemblage neither was it informed by Alhaji Akinola”.

The report continued “suffice to state here that this is impersonation which is a criminal act by Alhaji Akinola. Also, the states seeing the KEKEs in national colours and titled “KEKE NAPEP” would believe they belonged to NAPEP. This again is misrepresentation and deception which is criminal”

The committee concluded its report by raising fundamental questions for Dr. Kpakol; “Above all these, the next question is, what happens to the units of KEKE NAPEP that Autobahn is to deliver to KORAN? Is KORAN going to sell them at the same price as Trimidan?

In the same vein, alarmed by the intimidating level of graft in NAPEP headed by Dr. Magnus Kpakol, the Senate Committee on National Planning, Economic Affairs and Poverty Aleviation, made up of distinguished senators headed by Senator Zaynab Kure, Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, Ayogu Eze, Odion Ugbesia, Bode Olajumoke, Ibrahim Turaki, to mention a few, indicted the agency.

In its report on paragraph 6.6, the committee said “from the investigations, it is established that despite the sum of N1.850 billion only provided between 2006 and 2008 on Monitoring and Evaluation, this aspect of the programmes was very weak and ineffective. Most of the anomalies identified in various states of the federation were as a result of the nonchalant attitude of the Monitoring Unit of NAPEP at the National and State levels”.

The Senate Committee further indicted Dr. Kpakol’s leadership when it said in paragraph 6.10 “the committee established that relationships between NAPEP and Intercontinental Bank Plc and Oceanic International Bank Plc were skewed in favour of the banks. It is observed that the funds meant for Village Economic Development Solution (VEDS) and cope programmes- Five billion (N5bn) and two billion two hundred and sixty-five million (N2.265) naira respectively were managed to the disadvantage of NAPEP and poor Nigerians. The banks in collaboration with NAPEP officials left the fund idle in various accounts with no interest paid by the banks. It is equally established, a situation where one of the banks charged commission on turnover (COT) on NAPEP (Government) accounts against the directives of the central Bank of Nigeria.

The Senate committee lauded the contractor (Autobahn Techniques Limited) for meeting its obligation by delivering to target even in the midst of outstanding payments “the contract for the supply of KEKE NAPEP was awarded in 2001 for the supply 2000 units, at the contract sum of N700million. All the units were supplied by the contractor and NAPEP state coordinators were in the collection and distribution of units allocated to their states”.

The questions on the minds of beneficiaries and potential beneficiaries of the KEKE NAPEP which Dr. Magnus Kpakol cannot provide an answer for are: in spite of all the indictments by several committees before and now, even including his own investigating panel, how has he remained untouchable when he should ordinarily be behind bars? If Kpakol has no backers in high places, why does he carry on with so much arrogance boasting that he is untouchable?

Keke NAPEP, was proposed by Autobahn Techniques Limited, under the chairmanship of Mr. Alban Ofili-Okonkwo to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, in the year 2000. The aim was for youth empowerment, poverty eradication and technology acquisition, through the use of motorized three-wheel vehicles in partnership with the Federal Government of Nigeria. This proposal was adopted by the government and Autobahn was mandated to implement its proposal. The KEKE NAPEP concept consists of a combination of re-orientation, training, empowerment and thrift.

However, rather than Dr, Kpakol face the huge challenge of eradicating poverty in the country, he (Kpakol) has been victimizing and frustrating, Autobahn Techniques, which was the initiator and license owner of the KeKe NAPEP project since 1999.

Kpakol has used his office to deliberately delay payment to the company, by first issuing a number of dud cheques so as to seek out time to influence overseas suppliers to work against Autobahn. He (Kpakol) also refused to procure the contractual duty and VAT waivers in time before the government suspended it. The same man also recently made press statements to explain the effect of force majeure by way of unprecedented port congestion on the assembly and supply of the Keke NAPEP vehicles despite earlier painting Autobahn as a criminal venture.

Zimbabwe’s representative in the Big Brother All Stars reality television show, Photo:Munyaradzi Chidzonga on Wednesday met President Robert Mugabe and was feted with $300 000 compensatory ‘prize money.’

This means that Munya got more than the winner of the competition, Uti from Nigeria who pocketed $200 000 for winning the contest sponsored by Multi Choice.

Zimbabweans felt Munya was robbed after surviving eviction nine times when he was nominated and political heavyweights from President Mugabe’s Zanu PF party jumped at the opportunity to exploit to their favour.

The move was initiated by business mogul Phillip Chiyangwa, a nephew of the president and David Chapfika who initiated a fundraising campaign.

After meeting the president, Munya said: “That was something I wanted to do since I was very young. They say when you are young you are given the power of dreams.

“You live that dream until a certain time it is realised. I have always told young people around that we are a product of a group of men’s dreams and we have been given a platform.

“And I can proudly stand on that platform and say a black man is more powerful in Zimbabwe than anywhere else in the world.

“I have been given the blessing of travelling and seeing, not all of it, but much of the world and this is the best place. It is thanks to men like you Your Excellency.”

During the course of Big Brother, Munya said he wanted to meet President Mugabe and usually went around the house with the Zimbabwean flag draped over his shoulders.

President Mugabe said Munya was a people’s hero and the true winner of the Big Brother All Stars reality television show.

He hailed Munya’s performance in the “grueling” and “rough contest”.

“This is quite a joyous moment not just for Munya, not just for me, but to all of us in the country… you have done well for the country,” he said..

“And you went through it all. I didn’t think you would survive because you looked so young, perhaps the youngest of them all.

“The most handsome of them all… We were very proud of you and of your performance..

“When it came to the end, the top decision, the judges had to make sure that one (person) had to win. It was Nigeria versus Zimbabwe and Nigeria is a very big country so you deferred to Nigeria.

“But both of you won and from our point of view, for us, you were the winner. You made us proud. I want to say congratulations to you and the young Zimbabweans represented by you.”

The 24- year old Munya touched down at the Harare International Airport around midday and was driven straight to the State house.

According to host of BBA IK, this was the closest ever finale with the winner securing the votes from eight countries and the runner up from seven.

Uti initially participated in the third season of Big Brother Africa and was one of the housemates from previous seasons chosen to enter the Big Brother All Stars house.

Since its release two and a half weeks ago, "Whip My Hair"—the runaway hit single by nine-year-old show-biz progeny Willow Smith—has become one of the most-analyzed songs in pop music history. Many have attempted to dissect the song's deceptively simple lyrics and wondered, "What does it all mean?" Reflection on the existential plight of man? Tribute to the recently rescued Chilean mine workers? Or a mere paean to the simple joy of whipping one's hair back and forth?

And now the pre-teen daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith has finally broken her silence on the topic, revealing the true story behind the song to a grateful nation. As Willow tells MTV, the song is a heartfelt salute to the power of individuality:.

"'Whip My Hair' means don't be afraid to be yourself, and don't let anybody tell you that that's wrong. Because the best thing is you."

..

Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair" has been a hit with online audiences, getting nearly four million views on You Tube's music channel Vevo, in just four days.

Other than a catchy hook, they video's fashion has some buzzing. Now the hairstylist responsible explains the key looks to People. “Creating the ‘Heart Hawk’ was a bit of a challenge," Marcia Hamilton tells the magazine. "But after tons of individual braids and many sticks of glue, I did it.”

Hamilton says that the stunning looks weren't just a solo effort on her part, saying, "These looks were a collaborative effort between Willow, Jada, Fawn Boardley and myself,” she says.

The daughter of actors Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith stars in the colorful video whipping her hair and joining in a group of kids dancing. The song sent bloggers and critics buzzing with delight when it was released in September. “Don't let her age fool you; the song packs serious punch,” said one Los Angeles Times writer at the time.

Willow isn’t the first of the Smith kids to venture into music. Her older brother, Jaden, rapped with Justin Bieberon a song featured on the Karate Kid soundtrack. Jaden Smith also starred in the film, which quickly became one of the biggest box office success stories of the summer.

Like the rest of her family, Willow Smith won’t be stopping at just music. She’s already begun her acting career - which has included roles alongside her father in his hit I Am Legend, vocal work alongside her mother inMadagascar 2, and a small role in Kit Kittredge: An American Girl.

“I really enjoyed every step of the creative process," Hamilton told People. She adds she "was thrilled to see it all come to life on Willow!”

Football's world governing body, FIFA, has provisionally suspended Executive Committee members Amos Adamu of Nigeria and Tahiti's Reynald Temarii as it investigates allegations of World Cup vote-selling by the duo.

FIFA announced this yesterday at a press conference following a meeting of its ethics committee, chaired by former Switzerland striker Claudio Sulser.

Four other FIFA officials were also provisionally suspended from taking part in any football-related activity. They are Slim Aloulou, Amadou Diakite, Ahongalu Fusimalohi and Ismael Bhamjee.

Besides Sulser, other FIFA officials present at the press conference to announce the suspensions were Jerome Valcke, the world body's secretary general and Nicolas Maingot, its director of communications. The conference had started two hours later than advertised, without explanation for the delay.

"The decision to provisionally suspend these officials is fully justified and should not be put in question," said Sulser.

"The evidence that has been presented to us today has led us to take this provisional measure, as we considered that the conditions were definitely met to take this decision and we deem that it is crucial to protect the integrity of the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cup bidding process.

"We are determined to have zero tolerance for any breach of the code of ethics."

Sulser added that two national football bodies, albeit unnamed, were also being investigated in connection with the scandal.

Addressing the media after the suspension, FIFA President, Sepp Blatter, said it was a sad day for football especially after having recorded success in what people thought could not be possible with the World Cup in Africa. But he dismissed claims that FIFA is corrupt by saying the immediate reaction of the body to the scandal showed its seriousness on zero tolerance for corruption.

He urged the media to trust FIFA and promised he would continue to do everything to protect the reputation of the game as the president. Blatter also played down the magnitude of the scandal by saying just as we have good players, there also bad players.

The suspended officials now have between now and the middle of November, when the ethics committee will meet again to take a final decision ahead of the World Cup vote on December 2, to prepare their defence.

Investigations to continue

In the meantime, FIFA will investigate the circumstances leading to the suspensions, and presumably, related matters surrounding alleged voting arrangements between bidding nations and parties seeking to influence the bidding process.

Valcke said the vote to decide the hosts for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups will still go ahead as planned on December 2, but added that if Adamu and Temarii are eventually found guilty then both of them will not be part of the voting process.

Five countries are vying for the right to stage the 2022 World Cup, namely Australia, Japan, Qatar, South Korea and the United States, while there are four bid groups for the 2018 World Cup.

They are England, Russia, as well as joint bids by the Netherlands and Belgium, along with another joint bid by the Iberian pair of Portugal and Spain.

EFCC trouble for Adamu

Reprieve may however be a long way off for Adamu as Nigeria's Anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is at the moment probing the one-time Director General of the National Sports Commission.

Reporters from British newspaper, the Sunday Times, posing as lobbyists for a consortium of American companies that wanted to help bring the World Cup back to the United States, filmed Adamu asking for money to fund the construction of four artificial football pitches in Nigeria.

No money exchanged hands but Adamu requested for the sum of £500,000, and in the opinion of the EFCC, that is enough reason to commence investigations on the embattled FIFA official.

"We have already commenced our own investigations mostly as a result of the fact that he was filmed demanding for money to construct football pitches in the country," EFCC spokesman Femi Babafemi said.

However, Babafemi declined to confirm whether the agency will arrest Adamu upon his return to the country.

"That will depend on the outcome of our own investigation and that of FIFA," he said..

The source said her abductors claim to be from the Eket area and that all they are interested in is in getting Exxon Mobil in Nigeria to pay the ransom.

The presidential aspiration of homeboy, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babanida yesterday, in Minna, suffered a severe setback as the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in his home state, Niger threw its weight behind the presidential ambition of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Chairman of the party in the state, Alhaji Abdulrahman Enagi during a meeting with the campaign co-ordinators of the Jonathan Campaign Organization, in Minna said the president had won the hearts of the people with the signing of the bill on the Hydro-Electric Power Producing Area Development Commission (HYPPADEC) into law.
Amidst shouts of ‘Nigeria sai Jonathan,’ Enagi assured that the party in Niger State would support the Jonathan/Sambo ticket in the PDP primaries.

Earlier during a courtesy call, the Niger State Governor Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu who was represented by his Deputy, Ahmed Musa Ibeto said the state was not rigid in its support for any presidential aspirant. He pointed out that the party, in Niger State will give its support to anybody ready to support the developmental aspiration of the state...

According to Ibeto, anybody who could dualise the Abuja-Minna Road, rehabilitate the federal roads in the state and solve the problem of electricity would have the support of the party. He thanked the Goodluck/Sambo Campaign Organization for the courtesy call bearing in mind that the state had a candidate and that it was not a do-or-die affair.

Ibeto added that any aspirant who eventually emerged would need the general cooperation of others for the general elections and after the election for the development of the country and to lead a united country.
The Deputy Governor said he prayed the Peoples democratic Party would come out more united than it was after the primaries, adding that the challenges before the country were too enormous.

The Director General of President Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Organization, Dr. Dalhatu Sarki Tafida stated that it was payback time for the people of the North to reciprocate the kind gesture of the people of the South-south. He added that in the past, the people of the South - south had always supported the North to achieve their political ambitions.

“People will wonder why we are supporting President Goodluck Jonathan despite that he is not from the North. But for me, I think it is pay back for the South-south people who have always supported the North to achieve its political ambitions which in many cases was not able to meet up with the required majority.”
“The people of the South-South have always supported us even before they ever dreamt that they will ever come looking for any position. So, I think this is the time to show them that we have been grateful for what they have done for us in the past,” Dalhatu said.

The Director General of the Goodluck/Sambo campaign organization who made this known yesterday in Minna when they paid a courtesy visit to the Niger state Governor Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu wondered what is in four years in the history of Nigeria ’s history that the North cannot give to Jonathan to make Nigeria better.

“This man who has been climbing the ladder gently and God has given him the opportunity said he wants to come back and make Nigeria better for just four years. What is even four years in the political history of Nigeria that the North cannot give to Goodluck to make Nigeria better”?
Dalhatu who accepted that the campaign organization is aware that Former Military President General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida who is an indigene of the state said they respect and admire the way the Former president ran the country but added that President Goodluck will make a good president if given the next four years.

“We are aware that you also have an aspirant for the position of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria here whom we respect “so much as our leader and we will pay him a courtesy visit now if he is in the town and is he is willing to receive us because as much as possible we want to ensure that we practice politics without bitterness”.
“Goodluck will make a good president, though there might be little bit of problems here and there, just watch him and see what he will do in the next four years”.

Goodbye America, welcome Nigeria

The meeting was drawing to a close when 56-year-old Paul Adujie sprang to his feet and announced into the cordless microphone that he was heading back to his native Nigeria after a 22-year stay in America. Adujie was among the 90 U.S-based Nigerians who recently met at a New York hotel to debate the social, economic and political problems bedevilling their poor but oil-rich country of over 150 million people.Photo: Nosa Garrick and Paul Adujie.

“I think the time has come for everyone to work toward the Nigeria of our dream,” Adujie told the gathering. “It’s wrong to stay here and do nothing. So I’m ready to return home to contribute to the process of making the next election fair and credible.”

There was a loud applause and a smile sprouted from the edges of Adujie’s lips. He then proposed a motion that the group, which calls itself the Nigeria People’s Parliament in Diaspora, should arm a team with sophisticated gadgets and send it to Nigeria to monitor the poll. The motion was unanimously passed and he again beamed with smiles.

Adujie is now making his promise real. In November, (he is keeping the exact date close to his chest because he fears for his security), like a few other citizens abroad distressed by their country’s multifarious problems, the Nigerian will quit his lucrative job at one of New York’s biggest law firms and abandon the comfort of his posh home in Queens to lend a helping hand to his fragile country.

“We all need to get involved,” he said in an interview at a friend’s home in the Brooklyn district of New York one recent Friday evening.

“At this point in my life, I’m ready to allow myself be shot to death if that would bring about a better Nigeria. We all need to be catalysts for change as we try to fix our country. No one will do it for us,” said Adujie, relaxing on an armchair adjacent a twin bed in the spacious, well kept and slightly perfumed one-bedroom apartment.

Dressed in a black suit, a white striped shirt, a red tie and an ash-coloured bowler hat, Adujie’s demeanour alternated between animation and despondency.

For the years that Adujie has been away, Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country and the world’s most populous black nation, has made very little progress. Although the country has enormous oil resources, earning about $25 billion a year, according to the Revenue Watch Institute, it remains among the most poverty-stricken in the world, ranking 158th out of the 182 countries rated in the United Nation’s most recent Human Development Index. Corruption is rife. Basic infrastructures have broken down. And its elections are perpetually flawed, its leaders often lacking legitimacy.

The general election initially scheduled for January but now tentatively fixed for April, presents another opportunity for the West African nation to reinvent itself. But apprehension is mounting worldwide that the election might throw the country into another round of political crisis.

“Nigeria is in trouble,” wrote John Campbell, a former U.S ambassador to Nigeria, in a controversial article for the Council for Foreign Relations in September. “National elections scheduled for 2011 have the potential to undermine the country’s current precarious stability by exacerbating its serious internal ethnic, regional and religious divisions.”

Adujie, a tall, dark, stocky man, who refused to take up US citizenship for fear that it might dilute his ‘Nigerianness’, deeply loves his country. He is troubled by the problems confronting it and does not want predictions like Campbell’s to come true. And so, like, a few other Nigerians in the Diaspora, committed to seeing a fraud-free election in their country, the New York lawyer is packing his stuff and heading home. He says he is ready to commit everything he has got to the process of remaking his country.

“I am leaving my job and the comfort here not because I am not aware of the condition in Nigeria, not because I’m foolish,” he explained, trying to damp down his feeling of despair.

“I’m doing that because I love Nigeria. The Americans who go to Iraq and Afghanistan - 17, 18 years-old who join the army, the marine or the navy to fight on behalf of America - do so because they love their country.

“They do so because they have the dedication, the commitment and the passion, nationalism and patriotism for America. Why can’t I or other Nigerians make that commitment?”

Adujie does not plan to run for office in the election. Neither is he a supporter of any of the candidates in the polls. His primary concern is for the electorate to be sufficiently enlightened so they can make informed choices in the elections.

“If the electorate is able to measure the comparative qualities between the candidates or between the various political parties, whatever decision they then make would be an informed one, not one based on bags of rice, bags of salt, five naira (Nigerian currency) or such other short-term benefits that take them for granted and defeat their long term interest,” said the lawyer, punching the air for emphasis.

Adujie came to the US in December 1988, after completing a law degree at the University of Maiduguri.

He later attended the New York University and was admitted to the New York bar. Though 5269 miles away, the lawyer has kept tabs on events in his homeland. Early this year, he decided it was time to get directly involved in charting a fresh course for Nigerian politics. He shared his plans with friends and family members who warned him against the move. They reminded him of the insecurity, corruption, misgovernment and infrastructural breakdown back home.

Still, he is trudging ahead. When he arrives in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, in November, he plans to tour university campuses across the 36 states to speak to students and faculties about the need to vote for the right kind of leaders. He would also engage with major labour and professional bodies to persuade them not to sit on the fence before, during and after the elections.

Like Adujie, like Garrick

Mr Adujie is not the only New York-based Nigerian sacrificing his job and comfort and returning home to mobilize citizens for the elections.

In early November, 25-year-old Nosa Garrick, a freelance writer and desktop artist, will quit her job with Thomson Reuters and fly to Nigeria to help run Vote or Quench, a nonprofit for voters’ education she co-founded with four other young Nigerians based in the United States, France and Nigeria.

Ms Garrick’s family came to the US in 1998 when her father was transferred to the Nigerian embassy in Washington.

She studied French and Communication at St. John’s University in New York.

After a year teaching English in France, Garrick returned to New York in 2007.

She loved it here and with a green card already in her kitty, longed to live here for as long as possible.

Her plans suddenly changed one day last April. The Nigerian president, Goodluck Jonathan, was on a visit to the US and was to appear on reporter Christiane Amanpour’s show on CNN.

A friend of Garrick’s, helping to produce the show, contacted her requesting a commentary on Nigeria. Her article titled “Dear leaders of Nigeria” and posted on Amanpour’s CNN blog, elicited 99 reactions, including some from Nigerian youths who challenged her to return home to help fix her country rather than pontificate from afar. Garrick was touched.

“For me, I thought there was no way I could turn around, not do anything and go on with my day,” Garrick, a smiling, tall, lanky, dark woman, said one recent Friday afternoon at a friend’s office in Manhattan, New York. She knew she needed to act, but she wasn’t sure how to proceed. So, she rang a few friends for ideas and before long, Vote or Quench - a social media-driven organization aimed at getting young Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora involved in elections and politics - was born.

The organisation now has a vibrant website and a lot of young people have signed on to the campaign, including Nneka Egbunna, a rising star, singer and songwriter, who now acts as the organisation’s spokesperson. Next month, Garrick will be on the ground in Nigeria to energize the campaign and work with other young people at home to insist on transparent and credible elections in their country.

“I want my kids to be able to go back to my country (she has no kids yet). I want to be able to live there and be okay, and not be afraid of kidnapping or of not having the basic infrastructures,” she said.

“I have realized that it’s wrong for me to stay here, see what’s going on and not do anything. If I am not part of the solution, then, I’m part of the problem.”

Nigeria, OPEC’s sixth largest producer of crude and one of America’s top supplier of crude, is notorious for fraudulent elections. Its last three elections fell far short of international standard and most western countries were outraged. Following widespread local and international condemnation of the 2007 poll, the government embarked on what it called a comprehensive electoral reform.

The head of the electoral agency and some of his commissioners have since been fired and replaced with a more credible team.

Adujie is hopeful that things would work well for his country this time around. “This is a time for rebirth and renewal for us as a country and as a people,” he said. “This is a chance for us to have the best president ever, the best governors ever, the best legislators ever.”

Cossy detained by Police !

Commotion Cossy as we'd like to call her because of her now legendary mammary attributes, is a personality many husbands, bachelors and young men would want to read about anytime of the day. And as a personality, Cossy has become an item many a wife would not want on their menu list or served up their tables even for breakfast.

cossy

But rather than tormenting souls with her 'huge mammary gift of nature' Cossy Orjiakor the Boobs queen has been cooling her feet at the Ilasan police station, Jakande First Gate on the Lagos Island. And for more than 34 hours she did just that behind the counters.

Problem started when a suspect was caught trying to break into her Ilasan residence. The locals in the area who knew the actress very well descended on the suspect and took to the street code of conduct by meting out the ever popular jungle justice even before Cossy could appear on the scene. She was said to have gone out for her daily business.

According to her, she called the police but was told that the police had no vehicle that could travel up the bumpy road to her house.

They prevailed on her to wait until they could get a good SUV that could manage the road.

The so-called help did not come and she had to dial 767 for help and she was advised to take the suspect to the police station by herself.

She said " I felt very uncomfortable but accepted to help as the Baale of the Ilasan at this time was also involved".

So, with the Baale and the many locals who had come to help her she headed for the Ilasan Police Staton.

Unknown to her the Divisional Police Office of the Station, a certain Mr. Ekpo had other ideas. The moment they dragged in the suspect the D.P.O. accused them of taking the laws into their own hands by meting out justice on the suspect and concluded the suspect was not caught in the act at all.

After being delayed for more than three hours, she called 112 and somehow her gesture was misunderstood by the DPO who charged her for assault.

"Immediately after this, the suspect was released and allowed to go and treat himself in some undisclosed hospital" Cossy revealed. "Thereafter, I was detained with the Baale and we have remained behind the counters for the past 32 hours", an angry Cossy confirmed to this writer on Wednesday evening

When Showtime got in touch with the DPO, Mr Ekpo of Ilasan police station, the police officer confirmed the story and agreed the sexy actress has been in their custody for sometime but debunk the allegation that he has held her and the Baale unlawfully..

According to the DPO " They had apprehended an innocent man and had beaten him thoroughly without no just course. As a police officer it is my job to investigate and I have investigated that no one had any proof that the suspect in question is a buglar".

Yet coming from Cossy, the Baale and a handful of the local it is evident that they have been held under detention for more than 32 hours. This has probably put paid to all the plans for the sultry actress to celebrate her birthday today, Ocober 16th.

Want an exclusive venue for your next party? The Mandarin Oriental Tokyo hotel may have the answer: use of the entire hotel, including nine restaurants and all spas and rooms - for a cool $671,000 a night.

The luxury hotel in central Tokyo began selling the plan a week ago as "something splashy" to commemorate its opening five years ago, said hotel spokeswoman Chie Hayakawa. It intends to apply for recognition from Guinness World Records once a reservation is finalized.

"When the hotel opened we had an exclusive party like this - black tie, cocktail dresses. There was music and drinks and food from the restaurants, and it was all quite grand," said Hayakawa, who took part.

"We thought it would be fun to offer the same experience to an exclusive group of guests."

Under the plan, the entire hotel - 178 guest rooms, all nine restaurants and all spas - would be reserved from 3:00 in the afternoon to noon the next day. It would include a cocktail reception for 500 people.

The price tag is 55 million yen ($671,800)..

Hayakawa said the hotel has already received a number of inquiries, mainly from companies, though individuals would be welcome as well.

"The only thing is, you have to pick a date where there are no reservations already," she added. "It's not as if you could just request it for later this week."

P-Square’s dad visits sons in Lagos for the first time • ‘He apologized for not supporting our musical career’
By Samuel Olatunji

For the first time in 20 years, the father of the popular singing duo, Peter and Paul Okoye, popularly known as P-Square, has visited his superstar sons in Lagos last week Tuesday to felicitate with them in their new mansion at the Omole, Ogba area.

P-Square

The man, who came with his wife and mother of his six children from Jos was pleasantly surprised to see how far his sons have come. He was said to be skeptical initially towards the choice of musical career of his twin sons, P-Squar

Though he visited Lagos about 20 years ago, he has never been to Lagos since his sons disobeyed him and relocated to Lagos in 2005 to pursue their dreams.

Mr. Okoye was skeptical at the choice of musical career of his four sons, Jude, Tony, Peter and Paul while in the university. Jude was in UNIJOS, Tony was in University of Maiduguri, while Peter and Paul were in UNIABUJA..

Jude initially started as a musician; he even went on to wax two albums while Tony was the dancer among the brothers. It was he who taught P-Square how to dance, while Peter and Paul were dancing and singing.

Their dad stopped paying their school fees and warned them sternly not to call home for any assistance if they relocated to Lagos for music..

‘It was tough initially, but we knew this is what we wanted then, so we decided to move on’, Peter said. Did their father not feel bad after they started enjoying initial success? ‘Our dad apologized to us years ago when we were still at Jude’s house in Maryland. He called and told us that he was uncomfortable that four of his sons left home without asking after him. Then, we weren’t even that successful. He called us to say he was sorry. He wanted the best for us then, but we also knew what we wanted’, he said.

P-Square is a pop duo of twin brothers Peter and Paul and unarguably one of the most success music brands out of Africa. The group recently won KORA’s Africa Musician of the Year Award and the coveted N1 million-prize money. The group was recently signed on as Glocacom ambassadors in a deal that was reportedly worth of N200 million. With hit tracks like Ifunnaya, Busy Body, E no easy, Danger, Game Over, P-Square is definitely a top brand out of Africa.

Russia to Help Venezuela Build Nuclear Power Plant

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev sought to pre-empt questions about why Venezuela would need nuclear power by saying the deal would help Caracas reduce its dependence on global
market fluctuations..

"I don't know who will shudder at this," Medvedev said at a news conference after the signing. "The president (of Venezuela) said there will be nations that will have different emotions
about that, but I would like to emphasize that our intentions are
absolutely pure and open: We want our partner Venezuela to have a full
range of energy possibilities."

Medvedev said Russia sees nuclear energy as a priority, despite its own hydrocarbon wealth, and described Russia's civilian nuclear technology as highly competitive abroad.

"We are building many plants in different countries, so why wouldn't build such a plant in our close partner, Venezuela?" he said. "That will offer a certain degree of independence
in case of a drop in world energy prices."

Chavez said Venezuela wants to reduce its dependence on oil and gas and praised Russia for helping his country.

"Strategic cooperation with Russia gives my country a huge advantage," he said.

True to his flamboyant style, Chavez praised the Soviet Union and presented Medvedev with several bars of dark chocolate and cans of banana confiture and cocoa powder as the two
leaders sat facing reporter's questions.

The Venezuelan leader has grown increasingly close to Russia, Iran and China while assailing U.S. policies, and his rhetoric about the need for a "multi-polar world" has resonated in
Moscow.

"Russia and Venezuela staunchly support the creation of modern and fair world order, so that our future doesn't depend on the will and the liking of just one country, its welfare and
mood," Medvedev said in a veiled reference to the United States.

Chavez plans to meet with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin later Friday.

In another deal signed after the talks, Russia's state oil company Rosneft agreed to buy from Petroleos de Venezuela S.A. 50 percent in Germany's Ruhr Oel GmbH, a 50-50 downstream
joint venture between PdVSA and British oil giant BP. The Russian oil
company will pay $1.6 billion for the stake, the company said in a
statement.

Ruhr Oel holds stakes in four German refineries and petrochemical plants.

Rosneft president Eduard Khudainatov said the deal will help Rosneft "expand our presence with high quality assets in key international markets". The deal will leave 18 percent of
Rosneft's refining capacity "in the heart of industrialized Europe."

Chavez's government has bought more than $4 billion in Russian weapons since 2005, including fighter jets, helicopters and 100,000 Kalashnikov rifles. New weapons deals have been
under discussion, but no new agreements were announced Friday.

Russia and Venezuela also have launched a joint business to tap vast oil deposits in eastern Venezuela.

The recent flood that rendered a lot of Lagosians homeless, destroying property worth millions of naira, impoverished the victims, as reported by OWONIBI AYOMIDE.

THE Foursquare Gospel Church in Agiliti a suburb in Mile 12 still stands solidly on its foundation. Though the church is painted white to signify purity, the white paint is gradually peeling away, revealing the ash coloured plastered walls now green and slimy with algae..

Instead of devoted worshippers clapping and singing praises, the church is quiet and desolate. The only sound that can be heard is the sound of water seeping through some of the cracks in the walls. Occasionally, the stillness of the church is broken by the sound of a water creature going about its business as if it belongs there.

Outside the church is a long stretch of algae green water with rows of houses and shops on both sides. The stretch of water was once Oreofe Street. The houses are not like normal houses on dry land. Though once built on dry land, they are now submerged in water up to the window level or the roof as the case may be.

Where is my pot?
For many residents of Ikorodu, Ajegunle and other surrounding communities, the flood that ravaged the community last weekend, will always remain fresh in their memories, as many of them lost valuable properties accumulated after many years of hard work and labour. For Mrs. Theresa Adekanle, a widow living in a one room apartment in one of the streets submerged by water, the flood has reduced her to a beggar as she has to depend on kindhearted neighbours to provide food for her and her three children.

While speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, the widow recalled that she had gone to bed with her children around ten on Friday night, only to wake up two hours later to pray and discovered that somehow, water was seeping under her door.

“I initially thought that someone had mistakenly tripped over a bucket of water I normally keep in front of my door for toilet purposes. I opened the door to reprimand whoever it was, but was surprised to see that the whole passage was filled with water. I raised an alarm and the other tenants started trooping out of their rooms and salvaging their properties.”

Mrs. Adekanle noted with dismay that after making sure that her children were safely perched on the table she uses to display her tomatoes and pepper in front of the house, she discovered that the pot of soup which she allegedly spent N700 in preparing had drifted away to the backyard. She also lamented that the dry foodstuff she bought for the month were also destroyed by the flood waters.

“I am presently going through a lot, as I am living from hand to mouth. If not for my pastor and the little daily contribution I do, me and my children would have taken to the streets in search of our daily bread.”

Harvest of loss
Mrs. Adekanle is not the only one affected by the flood, as hundreds of people living in the area had to flee the area, living behind their property. A man shook his head sadly as he pointed to his car which was submerged in water and declined to give any comment, as his loss was evident enough.

Taking a canoe ride through the submerged street is not easy as the youngsters paddling the canoe have to battle with floating household utensils like pots, plastic plates, and what have you. The water has proved to be a litmus test for many houses which were constructed hurriedly without making sure that the foundations are strong enough to withstand the test of time.

According to a youth leader in the area, more than eight houses have collapsed since the flood began, while many others stand the risk of collapse once the water dry up.

A mechanic operating in the area said that he is only waiting for the water to dry up so that he can retrieve some of his tools that sank. “This is my shop,” he said pointing to what once used to be a wood structure. “I don’t live here, but I was more than shocked when I came to work in the morning and discovered that my shop has been submerged. As you can see, I am only waiting for the waters to dry up. He explained hopefully.

We must survive
A visit to the area revealed that some of the residents of the area who have no where to go; have continued to live in their swamped houses regardless of the dangers inherent in it. Borrowing a leaf from the Ilaje people who build their homes on water, many of them have constructed wooden platforms in their rooms, from where they sleep, cook and eat. Children who are of age are severely warned about the dangers lurking beneath the murky waters, so there is no fear of drowning or any other mishap.

One of the residents who simply identified himself as Sunday, said that some of the major problems they are currently facing is the smell of the water, the large number of mosquitoes and other flying insects, the difficulty in getting clean water to drink and worse of all, the presence of snakes.

“For me, getting water to drink is really not a problem because all I have to do is take a canoe to the other side and buy pure water.” He said, pointing to some bags of water stashed on the platform. “Initially, I didn’t want to abandon my house and go and squat with friends but I am currently rethinking the situation because of the snakes. Though I know they can’t bite while in water, what will happen when they manage to slide up my bed in the night?”

Another resident who continues to live in her house despite the swamped quarters complained about the cold and the difficulty of going to work.

“It is not as bad as people out there think. In life we must all learn to adapt to whatever situation we find ourselves. The only challenge I am having right now is the difficulty in getting to work. Getting a canoe is not easy, because the youngsters who paddle the canoe are afraid of my end, complaining that the snakes are too much.”

While many are lamenting bitterly, the canoe business is thriving beautifully, as the paddlers make as high as N2000 daily from ferrying people to and fro the flooded areas. Carpenters now have to work overtime because suddenly, every unemployed youth now wants to have a canoe because of the fringe benefits.

Echoes of help
Looking more like a ghost town, the submerged areas in Agiliti and Madan areas is so deserted and quiet that the voice of the few left behind, echo loudly, reverberating inside the abandoned houses now inhabited by water left to their fate by the former occupants. The playing ground of the schools located in the areas which was once filled with happy children is now a shadow of itself. The only living creatures are frogs and other water creatures.

Some of the residents who spoke with the Sunday Tribune pleaded with Governor Fashola to come to their rescue as they had been cut off from their means of livelihood. However, there was a twist in the whole plea for help as some of the residents said that they were not suffering and that nothing should be written about them or the government would come and demolish their houses.

“We don’t want any interference from the government. All we want from them is that they should give us good roads and find a way of channeling the dam from Ogun State to somewhere else. Governor Fashola cannot just come here and tell us to go somewhere else. This happens once in year and we are well prepared for it. We knew this was a water area when we bought our land.” One of the elders in the community yelled angrily.

This miner was cheating on his wife

Between a rock and a hard place: Husband emerges to face warring women who had to be pulled apart

Probably the bravest of all the 33 trapped miners was the one who asked for both his wife and his mistress to greet him on reaching the surface.

Yonni Barrios initially became known as the group’s ‘doctor’.

He used knowledge gained from looking after his diabetic mother to work with medical teams on the surface to diagnose and help the men trapped with him. ..

Row: Marta Salinas, left, wife of trapped miner Yonni Barrios, did not greet him on his return to the surface after it emerged he was having an affair with Susana Valenzuela, right

But very soon the 50-year-old miner became even better known for something rather less noble. His wife and another woman were both holding a vigil for him in Camp Hope.

Marta Salinas, 58, whom he married 28 years ago, reportedly almost came to blows with Susana Valenzuela, 50, when they faced off in the mine’s dining area. The pair had to be pulled apart.

According to Miss Salinas, Barrios had been dividing his time between the two women for the last couple of years. And it was Miss Valenzuela who broke the news to her that there had been an accident at the mine.

As his wife began to get involved in his affairs on Camp Hope, he instructed teams on the surface to deal with his lover instead.

And as the day of the rescue finally approached, he asked for both of them to wait for him as he emerged from the borehole.

‘He is either very cheeky or very idiotic,’ said a source within the rescue team. ‘He didn’t seem worried at all.’

In the end he was greeted by his mistress, his wife choosing to stay away. He emerged at 8:32pm UK time to be met by tearful Miss Valenzuela.

He looked calm as he gingerly walked towards his mistress, who gave him a long hug, crying on his shoulder and occasionally pulling back to look at him as if to make sure the reunion was really happening.

After he emerged, his wife, who has three sons from an earlier relationship, said she is over Barrios and did not feel ‘anything in particular’.

'Cocky': Barrios, waving to the crowd, was slammed by his ex-wife - but Susanna was unable to hide the joy from her face at his escape

She said: ‘I watched it on television. I’m very pleased they are all coming out well.

‘I’m glad I didn’t go to the mine, it was the correct decision. It would have been wrong if the two of us were there – I have children and grandchildren. That kind of situation wouldn’t have been good for my family, and my sons come first.

‘He is crazy and cocky to think I would do such a thing. I have a sense of decency.’

She said she could tell Barrios was ‘holding back’ in the reunion, as his girlfriend held him tightly and cried.

Rock and a hard place: Miner Yonni Barrios

‘I know she is impulsive, while he behaved properly. He knew I was going to be watching.’ She said she would not be visiting him at the hospital. ‘If he wants to see me or talk to me he can come find me. Otherwise we will talk through our lawyers.

‘I have his belongings and all these gifts people have sent him – he is welcome to have them.’

She said she is not bitter but had a parting shot for her husband and the other miners.

‘This is historic but soon it will be over to the next thing. People move on – in a few years everyone will have forgotten about this.

‘They think they will all be millionaires overnight but it’s not like that. Only the skillful ones will make something from this.’

Mr Barrios is thought not to be alone in his complex domestic arrangements.

According to reports, another Barrios – Carlos – who was rescued yesterday has a five-year-old son with a woman he has not divorced and his girlfriend of seven months is pregnant.

Another miner is said to have four women claiming his affections and perhaps soon-to-be-increased income – a wife he has not divorced, his current live-in girlfriend, a third woman who claims to have had his son and another who says she is having an affair with him.

MEND threatens new attack

In a statement sent by its usual spokeman, Jomo Gbomo, the group said it will "give a thirty minutes advance warning to avoid civilian casualties then sit back and watch how the blame game will be played out on all those already falsely accused."

The group, which also claimed the bomb attack (which it described as a perfect opportunity) in Abuja on the morning of the October 1, said President Goodluck Jonathan's presidential bid has been been brought above every other thing and that the federal government is involved in an "attempt to intimidate anyone opposed to the presidential ambition of Goodluck Jonathan."

Describing it as "hiding under the cloak of terrorist hunting and witch-hunting, by falsely accusing and harassing its perceived opponents," the group repeated an earlier claim that linking Raymond Dokpesi and Henry Okah in South Africa is a product of the Nigerian government threat to nationalize the South Africa communication group, MTN if South Africa does not follow its script.

Actor Michael Douglas is only recovering from a tough course of radiation and chemotherapy for his throat cancer, his rep said, flatly dismissing rumors that
Douglas changed his will and is saying goodbye to loved ones.

Michael Douglas

Is this michael Douglas ?

The "Wall Street" actor's longtime publicist, Allen Burry, told People.com, "Michael hasn't changed his will recently, and he isn't contemplating changing it." Oliver Stone the actors pal has said that ouglas's health is in a precarious position .
"Michael is totally focused on his recovery," Burry continued, again reporting that doctors "are very pleased with how he responded to treatment. They think he's doing really well. He's doing as well as can be expected."
"Extra" Lifechanger Dr. Gerald Berke, UCLA's Chief of Head and Neck Surgery, said eight weeks of radiation and chemo undoubtedly take a toll. "Imagine if you had a burn on the base of your tongue that encompassed a very large portion. It's burning his tongue and causing damage to normal tissue as well as the cancer.. Douglas is receiving radiation to his neck as well."
"All of that can affect an individual's ability to eat," the doctor continued. "He'll still be feeling like things are worse not better but usually within two to three months things will start to turn around."
Having his family around him can only help Douglas' healing process. Dr. Berke explained, "The most important thing is for patients to keep a good attitude and be optimistic because that has so much importance in their ability to heal and regenerate."
The UCLA doc also praised the Oscar-winning actor for being so public and encouraging others to get checked. "We've been seeing a lot of people that have all of a sudden come in and say, 'I've been having this, I've been having that, I just want to make sure that this doesn't happen to me. So in many respects, he's a hero for doing this."

More:

Director Oliver Stone fears for his pal Michael Douglas as he battles throat cancer, admitting the veteran actor is in a "precarious" state of health. Douglas completed radiation and chemotherapy treatment for the advanced disease last week and is expected to take at least six weeks to recover.

The Oscar winner made a brief appearance at the New York premiere of his and Stone's latest film, "Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps", in September, but Douglas' ailing health has forced him to skip the rest of the promotional tour. Stone jetted to Berlin, Germany this week to continue publicity for the movie, where he aired his deep concerns for the sick star, telling reporters Douglas was still "suffering" and was in a "precarious" condition.

But the actor is refusing to let the cancer get him down and is determined to win his health battle. In one of his most recent interviews, he said, "It's a fight. The treatment is brutal. It really knocks you out. But I'm going to beat this." -stone.jpg
