The special assistant on public affairs to the 87 years old Anthony Enahoro, Olawale Okuniyi, has assured Nigerians that the elder statesman is alive and recuperating.

Mr. Enahoro's failing health created anxiety in the public domain on Monday.

"Chief Anthony Enahoro is still very much alive," Mr. Okuniyi said. He acknowledged that Mr. Enahoro, accompanied by his eldest son, Ken, was rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital at about 1.30pm on Monday when his health deteriorated.

According to him, he is under close medical observations of his doctors at the UBTH.

"His health is currently stabilising in Benin, the Edo State capital, after an initial relapse occasioned by stress and old age," he said...

He explained that the statesman had been under close medical guidance for some time due to weakness associated with old age.

Mr. Okuniyi further expressed appreciation to well-wishers, associates, and the general public as well as the international community, on behalf of the Enahoro family, for their concern and prayers.

On the wings of the 2010 Felabration that just ended in Lagos, one of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti's wives, Kevwe, speaks with CHUX OHAI and ADA ONYEMA about her life with the late Afrobeat musician. How did you meet Fela? I used to take food to an uncle of mine known as Gabriel Okpaku. He had a studio. I would take the food to him there. One day, when I got to the studio, he locked me in the dark room and walked away, leaving me in company with Fela, who was visiting him at the time. I had sex with Fela that day. Later, Fela said he wouldn't like me to live in the same house as his boys in the Mosalasi area. He took me to his first wife, Remi, who was Femi's mother. The first day I saw her, I was shocked because she was very light and her hair was as long as that of a white woman. Fela left me in her care and asked her to take care of me. I told her everything about myself and she said that if I should take her word and be like a daughter to her, there would not be any problem....

Which year was this?

That was in 1972. He had just recorded the popular album, Shakara.

Did you eventually marry Fela officially?

Yes, I did. I was one of the 27 women Fela married in one day. His friend took us to his house first before we were taken to a high court for the wedding. The people at the court said we were underage and that Fela should be arrested for even thinking of luring us into marriage. Eventually, they threw us out and we went to his friend's office and from there to the late Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti's residence. By that time, Fela's house had been burned down. So he rented a hotel where 12 herbalists were invited to conduct the wedding ceremony.

Which one of Fela's house was burnt? Was it the one in Mosalasi?

Yes.

Were you living with Fela then?

Yes.

Can you describe what happened?

I was an eyewitness. What happened was this: Femi was learning to drive a car. On his way back, the police arrested him for one reason or the other. The policemen who made the arrest argued with Fela's boys, who appeared to be drunk at the time. A fight ensued and one of the policemen fell to the ground. The others ran to nearby Abalti Army Barracks and reported the matter to some soldiers. Before the soldiers arrived, the boys had already gone into hiding inside Fela's compound. The police came in and told Fela that they wanted to arrest his boys. But Fela said he was not going to allow that and they threatened to bring in the army. By this time, Fela had fortified his residence, which was walled, with a live electric wire and anybody that touched the wire would be electrocuted to death. When this was going on, he told his mother that he wanted to activate the wire; but she said he should let the police go into the compound as long as they had a search warrant. Also, she said if they didn't come with one, he should be ready to wage a total war with them. Of course, it turned out that the policemen did not come with a search warrant and they came in company with many soldiers. All of them surrounded Fela's compound at once. He had no choice other than to turn on the electricity, thereby activating the wire on the fence. In the process, some soldiers were electrocuted. That was why their colleagues came back forcefully and threw fire into the generator that supplied the electricity and the generator burned out. Having destroyed the power generator, the soldiers were able to gain entry into Fela's home. When they got in, they shot five girls to death instantly. I still remember their names. They were Patience, Kemi, Kehinde and Taiwo, alongside two white men, who were standing at the front gate of the compound. I didn't remember anything else until I woke up to see myself in Abalti barracks.

Was it on the same day that Fela's mother was killed?

Yes, the soldiers killed his mother on that day. They came in with arms and were prepared to kill everybody in sight. Immediately they started shooting, I went to hide in the toilet. But they found me and beat the hell out of me. I saw them go upstairs to Fela's mother and carry her. At that point, I was in pains and half-conscious. But I knew they threw her downstairs. They were really determined to kill.

After you got married to Fela, what happened?

After the marriage ceremony, we went to Ghana for the honeymoon.

All the 27 wives?

Yes, all the 27 wives with Alex Conde, the one that married the late Chief Okotie Eboh's daughter. He took us to Ghana for the honeymoon and from there Fela brought other girls. The other wives were always jealous because Fela paid a lot of attention to me. Fela used to tell us to smoke marijuana or he would not accept us as his own people..

Were you smoking marijuana before you married him?

No. He introduced me to smoking. Whenever I refused to smoke, he would get angry and disgrace me in public.

What made you think that the other women were jealous?

Who is Mama Mosun?

She is the one they call Najite or Damiregba Anikulapo-Kuti. She has made herself Fela's only surviving wife in the house, whereas she is not.

How old is your son?

He is 28 years old now.

Where is he now?

He is in Lagos. He used to attend Babcock University.

Who has been funding his education?

My godmother, Mrs. Aduke Bademosi.

Why did it take you so long to make this revelation?

Because I swore on oath to late the Remi Anikulapo-Kuti that I would not spoil anything for her, as long as she was alive. We had an agreement that I could go ahead and spill it after her death. She was a great woman and I respect her a lot.

Aren't you going against your promise to her now?

No. It was her dream to see the relative of Fela and I settle down as man and wife.

She wanted you to marry Fela's relative?

Yes, she wanted me to marry Fela's relative. She used to tell me that Fela's relative was very fond of me. She was even the one that took me to the hospital to save my pregnancy. She was always there for me.

You abandoned your son, didn't you?

I did not abandon him.

So what happened?

After Fela named my child, one of the wives poisoned my baby's food. Unknown to her, I had seen her do it and decided to drop the feeder. Unfortunately, another house mate mistakenly took the feeder and fed her own baby the poison and the baby died. That was how I left Fela's house.

When did you leave Fela's house?

Between 1982 and now, where have you been and what have you been doing?

Well, I have been in England.

Are you back to Nigeria?

I will say fully because I don't want to reveal more secret.

Did you come home when Fela died?

Yes, I was here for his burial. That day was very dark.

It's been more than a decade since Fela died, how do you keep body and soul together?

It's by God's grace.

Do have any plan to remarry?

I will remarry if I see somebody that will love me the way Fela did.

You haven't told us your age

I'm 50 years old.

At the time Fela died, there was this rumour that he died of complications arising from HIV/AIDS infection. What was your reaction when you heard it?

It was a lie.

When you heard it, were you not afraid?

I wasn't afraid because I had faith in what I believe in. If he died of AIDS, how come it did not affect me? Fela had slept with me more than anyone else in that house. I should be the first person to be infected with HIV/AIDS.

Really?

Yes.

Have you gone for HIV/AIDS test?

I did all the tests in England. There is nothing wrong with me. I'm healthy. I'm a nurse.

Mob sets four suspected ritualists ablaze

Four suspected ritualists were set ablaze by mob between Friday and Sunday in different parts of Ogun State...

PUNCH METRO gathered on Monday that the four victims were set ablaze in Ibara, Isabo, Olomore and Ago-Ika in Abeokuta North and South local government areas of the state.

At Isabo, a young man was allegedly set ablaze after he was accused of attempting to kidnap a school boy from a primary school in the area.

People living in the area, accosted him and demanded an explanation for his alleged suspicious movement.

An eyewitness, who declined to give his name, said the man was clubbed to death and later set ablaze by the mob when he could not give satisfactory answers to the questions.

It was gathered that two persons suspected to be planning to kidnap another boy in Olomore in Abeokuta North Local Government Area of the state were also killed in a similar way...

Also at Ibara near the Ogun State Government House, another young man was killed by a mob for allegedly kidnapping an eight-month-old boy from his mother.

However at Ago-Ika area, two suspects were lucky as policemen arrived on time to save them from being lynched.

An eyewitness, Mr. James Oguntade, said, “There is an increase in ritual killings in the society today and people are conscious of this development. The boy, who was returning from school, screamed as the two suspects were attempting to kidnap him.

“But as the suspects could not provide a satisfactory explanation during interrogation, the mob went into action and would have killed them but for the intervention of policemen from Adatan Police Station, who took the injured suspects to a private hospital in Mokola, Abeokuta.”

The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the incidents, warned residents to desist from jungle justice.

An investment banker stood at the pier of a small village close to sokoto when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large fish. The banker complimented the fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them..

The fisherman replied, “Only a little while.”

The banker then asked why didn’t he stay out longer and catch more fish?

The fisherman said he had enough to support his family’s immediate needs.

The banker then asked, “But what do you do with the rest of your time?”

The fisherman said, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siestas with my wife, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine, and play goje with my abokis . I have a full and busy life.”

The investor scoffed, “I am an Ivy League MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat. With the proceeds from the bigger boat, you could buy several boats, and eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats.
“The investor continued, “And instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would then sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing, and distribution! You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Sokoto, then Kano, Abuja and eventually Lagos , where you will run your expanding enterprise.”

The fisherman asked, “But how long will this all take?”

To which the banker replied, “Perhaps 15 to 20 years.”

“But what then?” asked the fisherman.

The banker laughed and said, “That’s the best part. When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich. You would make millions!”

“Millions. Okay, then what?” wondered the fisherman.

To which the investment banker replied, “Then you would retire. You could move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siestas with your wife, and stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos.”

If you were the fisherman what would you say ?

Chicken Manure Helps Power UK Town

Cirencester, United Kingdom — Starting next month, the droppings from thousands ofchickens will add their might to a biogas power station serving thisCotsworld market town.

Using chicken manure as well as dung from pigs and other agricultural waste from the area, the plant near Cirencester will convert the feedstock into biogas in an anaerobic digester (a biogas fermenter is pictured below).

"Looking like a giant cupcake, the plant will produce 1 megawatt hours of energy, enough to supply 350 houses with electricity," the firmAlfagy said in its news release about the plant.

The Guardian reported:

"Peter Kindt, managing director of Alfagy, the company supplying the plant's technology, said: 'What makes this project exciting is thatfarmers deliver energy to the urban environment. We believe this is amodel for the future of local power generation.'

"The combined heat and power plant, which will begin operating in November, captures the methane-rich gas released by decomposing organicmatter such as chicken manure. This is then burned in a generator toproduce renewable electricity and heat. Farmers are paid for the wasteand will receive free heat for drying grain and animal housing."..

By-products from the conversion can be used as fertilizer, and the odor usually associated with farm waste is diminished during the processas the methane is extracted and burned, Alfagy contends.

Biogas plants are growing in popularity in Europe and Asia -- as this recent article about cogeneration plants in Ukraine, China and India illustrate -- but they aren't as common in the United Kingdom.

Earlier this month, the Didcot sewage works in Oxfordshire made headlines with its landmark project: the first human-waste-to-energy plant in the U.K. That bioenergy operation is producing enough power for about 200 homes.

Have you lost hope?

Are you sick of slogging away on sites such as Match.com and eHarmony.com to find the partner of your dreams? Or at least the partner who will put up with your dead lizard collection, your back hair, and your difficult morning breath?

Then perhaps it is time to be honest with yourself. Perhaps it is time to look in the mirror and decide that you should be at the Ugly Bug Ball. Or, more accurately, on it...

The Ugly Bug Ball is a dating site for those who are aesthetically challenged. That is the creators' description, not mine. Though I am surprised that this site doesn't already include at least 95 percent of society.

"We deal in reality", the site says. So for those who wonder whether a site for the more Shreky (and, who knows, techy) has no chance of success, might I reveal that the Ugly Bug Ball has just announced its first engagement?

The Telegraph tells me that Tom Clifford and Janine Walker, two of the Ugly Bug Ball's members, are to be betrothed.

Some of the people who have signed up for the site.

(Credit: Screenshot: Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)

If you are cynical enough to imagine that it has taken some time for them to become used to their unique features, then you are to be uniquely pitied. For it was only in August that Clifford, 36, wrote to Walker that he had "a face that makes children cry." (Personally, I feel he was using a technique known as "underpromise and overdeliver.")

Walker, 31, offered the Telegraph a moving tribute to Clifford and to their relationship: "I appreciate that Tom isn't Brad Pitt, but then I'm no Angelina Jolie either."

The Ugly Bug Ball is so pleased to herald the site's first engagement that it has offered the beautiful, happy couple a honeymoon-- in an Ugly Bug caravan in Wales.

However, perhaps the most surprising, human, and moving aspect of this site resides in the sort of people who believe they qualify as ugly. While I wouldn't dream of offering a desperate cliche about beauty being in the eye of the beholder, it seems clear that there is some extremely peculiar beholding going on in the world.

Vogue has a lot to answer for. As does the National Enquirer.

It might make some wonder how it is that certain people behold themselves as beautiful. Yes, they're the folks who put stunning pictures of themselves up on Match.com and eHarmony in the hope that no one will notice that, in real life, they bear rather more resemblance to, well, character actors.

The Ugly Bug Ball surely represents something more real and, simultaneously, refined. One can only wish Clifford and Walker lasting happiness. For richer, for poorer. In sickness and in health. In the heat of the night and in the cold light of morning.

The Miss World contest was mired in controversy last night amid claims that the hot favourite was frozen out because of a diplomatic feud.photo:Miss Norway

American teenager Alexandria Mills was crowned the winner of the 60th anniversary beauty contest on Saturday.
But the 18-year-old Miss USA’s celebrations were tainted by claims that there was no great surprise when Britain’s four contestants failed to make the final cut in the spectacular broadcast to an estimated one billion people around the world.
Insiders were shocked that stunning 23-year-old Norwegian university graduate Mariann Birkedal - the odds on favourite - didn’t even make the top five.

According to reports last night, observers speculated the judges bowed to pressure from Beijing, which is involved in a bitter international spat with Norway.

China is said to be furious after the Oslo-based Nobel Peace Prize committee awarded the coveted prize to the jailed Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo earlier this month....

Before the results were announced, Miss Norway was the shortest-priced favourite in Miss World history at 6/5, while Miss USA lagged behind at 7/1. Miss England Jessica Linley, a 21-year-old law student from Nottingham, was an even longer 50/1 shot.

Kathrine Sorland, a Norwegian TV personality who came fourth in Miss World 2002, said she believed China’s fury at the Nobel Peace Prize committee had influenced the outcome. ‘I was sure she would win,’ she said. ‘They must have mixed politics and business. Without jumping to conclusions I would stress that Miss World competitions have always been political. And the relations between China and Norway are very strained at the moment.’

Miss Birkedal herself was more cautious on whether she had been cheated of the crown. ‘I have been very careful with speculating about that myself,’ she said. ‘It is kind of stupid to start thinking that if this or that had not occurred I would perhaps have been Miss World 2010. I do believe everything happens out of a reason.’ The contest was held in Sanya on China’s tropical Hainan Island for the fifth time in the last eight years.

Britain’s Dorset-born Ann Sidney, who won Miss World in 1964, was on the judge’s panel along with six other former winners. Founded by the late Eric Morley as part of the Festival of Britain celebrations in 1951, Miss World is the oldest international beauty pageant. It is still run by his widow, Julia, and has a long history of scandals and controversies.
This year was no exception. Even before the rumpus over Miss Norway’s early exit, the contest had to be moved from its original site in Vietnam because the location was an ecological heritage zone and local residents had allegedly been forcibly moved from their land.

With China as the host, Taiwan was unable to compete because Beijing does not recognise it as an independent country.
And on Saturday night, the Chinese audience gave Miss Japan the silent treatment, apparently protesting Japan’s claim to the Diaoyu Islands, a group of uninhabited rocks coveted for fishing and mineral rights.

The contest has had its fair share of controversies since its inception. The UK’s 1974 winner, Helen Morgan, was forced to resign after four days when she was revealed to be an unmarried mother and the 1980 Miss World, Gabriella Brun, from Germany, had to quit after it was discovered she posed naked for a magazine. In 2002, the beauty queens had to flee the host country, Nigeria, after 200 people died in riots which started after a newspaper suggested the Muslim prophet Mohammed would have chosen a wife from one of the contestants had he been alive.

TO checkmate the rising crime wave in his community, a blind pastor, Moses Kasali yesterday donated a N5 million modern police post to the Nigeria Police Force to serve six communities in Akinyele Local Council area of Oyo State..
Kasali, who conducted reporters round the newly constructed police post at Oyedeji area of Ibadan, said the gesture was aimed at supporting the government in the area of security and fighting crime.
He stated that the task of nation building should not be left for the government alone to handle and implored other well meaning Nigerians to take up the challenge of partnering with the government.
The cleric stated that the era of waiting on government to provide basic amenities and infrastructure for the citizenry was over, saying Nigerians must think of how to support government in their own little way.
This, he noted is the only way to take the nation to greater heights.
Kasali expressed hope that the presence of policemen in the community would put an end to the rising crime wave in the area. He said he was spurred to take up the challenge of building the police post when various entreaties by the community heads to the police authorities failed to yield the desired results....

He said: “My community came to me a few years ago to complain about the rising activities of criminals in the area. Many park their motorcycles popularly called okada at night and the following morning, the motorcycles nowhere to be found. When we requested for a police post, the police authorities said it would take them about one year to complete, so I took up the challenge and commenced the project. Today, the rest is history.”
While emphasizing the role of the police in crime prevention, the cleric said prayer remained one of the greatest weapons to fight the scourge.

Kasali disclosed that the police post, which has all necessary facilities to make it compete favourably with others across the globe, would be formally handed over to the Commissioner of Police, Baba Adisa Bolanta with a patrol van on Thursday, November 4.

In line with the provision of the Islamic legal code, the Vice Chancellor of the Niger State government-owned Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Professor Ibrahim Adamu Kolo, has outlawed hugging of female students in the university.

Kolo said that anyone caught "embracing or hugging" any female students would be severely dealt with.

The vice chancellor gave the order in Lapai, on Tuesday, while addressing a one-day enlarged re-orientation workshop organised by the institution for all its staff.

Describing hugging and embracing of female students as immoral, the vice chancellor said the management had decided to "forgive" those caught in the act but said those affected had been noted and would be closely watched by the authorities.

Kolo also warned staff of the university against leaking official secret as those that violated the law would be summarily sacked from the school...

He challenged staff and students to have a change of attitude in their approach to work and studies as all forms of idleness and laziness would not be tolerated.

A naija woman, Mrs. Ijeoma Nwabolo, has divorced her husband, Engr. Okezie Godwin Nwabolo, through the Facebook, a popular social networking site.
The husband, a publisher and telecommunications engineer, therefore, approached a Lagos High Court to seek dissolution of his 14-year marriage with Ijeoma.
Nwabolo told the court that a family friend called his attention to the popular social networking site where his wife had gone to change her marital name, Nwabolo, to her maiden name, Onyeka. She also changed her marital status to single...

This prompted him to approach the probate family division of the court to dissolve his marriage to Ijeoma, because all avenues to reconcile with her were rebuffed by her and her family.
The 46-year old engineer informed the court that the marriage which was solemnised on 3 August, 1996 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Maryland, Lagos, has broken down irreconcilably and his wife could not be traced.

Led in evidence by his counsel, T. O. Taiwo, he told the court that his wife deserted their matrimonial home without any notice or quarrel.
Nwabolo said on 7 August, 2006, he travelled to Abuja for an important meeting with the Belgian Ambassador to naija. When he got to Abuja, all attempts to speak with his wife on phone proved abortive.
“When I arrived in Abuja, I called my wife but all her lines were switched off. Later, I had a call from my driver informing me that my house was empty and my wife was nowhere to be found. I immediately went to the airport and boarded the next available flight to Lagos for verification.
“On getting home, I discovered that she has left our Lagos, residence with all my property and our marriage certificate. I tried all my best possible to locate her but to no avail.

“When I called her uncle, he was not forthcoming. So I got the church that solemnised us involved but she rebuffed all attempts for reconciliation,” he said.
He added that the tribunal of the Catholic Church which includes the Archbishop of Lagos and other bishops sat and advised him that the marriage had become null and void because all efforts for reconciliation were defeated by his wife and her family.
The presiding Judge, Justice Olubunmi Oyewole, subsequently adjourned the matter for further hearing.

Round Up: Tonto Dikeh defends new movie

role, P-Square unveil Square-Villa, Annie Macaulay addresses baby mama drama & Ikechukwu talks about his ideal woman

A few things have happened this week on the Naij celeb front. Lets start with Nollywood actress Tonto Dikeh, except you’ve been living under a rock somewhere you’ve probably seen the trailer for her new movie Dirty Secret, which is creating a lot of controversy as it features explicit sex scenes & a gay kiss…I don’t know if Nigeria is ready for this, knowing how conservative the industry is the movie may likely get banned! Anyways Tonto has gotten a lot of criticism over her role, she took to twitter to address them;

Chick does have a mouth on her…If you wanna see the trailer; youtube “Dirty Secrets African Movie” I couldn’t finish watching it…the man in the silver thong killed it for me…I’m not a prude but I had to hit the stop button…#imeanwharrahell?

There has been a lot of speculation about the cost of P-Square‘s new pad in Lagos. I’ve heard N300 mill, N500 mill. From the pictures though you can tell they spent a whole lot . One half of the duo, Peter says;

Getting a land in Omole Estate (Ikeja, Lagos) alone is N100m. When you look at the house, especially the finishing, it is over $2million. When people speculated that the house was worth N300 million, we had not even finished the interior. What do you think is the cost of a mansion that has a swimming pool, six living rooms, ten master bedrooms, all fully furnished? It’s far more than the speculated N300million

Congrats to them, but did Peter have to say that? See pictures of the house below.

Moving on to Annie Macaulay who this week was interviewed by entertainment reporter and blogger Stella Dimoko Korkus. For those who don’t know Annie is an actress & Tuface Baby Mama #3. Stella asked her about the rumoured altercation with Baby Mama #1 Pero Adeniyi at Tuface’s recent concert in Lagos to which Annie said;

Let me state it here now that nothing of such happened (sic), I have not seen the write up but people have been calling me and those who know the truth know the truth of what happened on that day. I didn’t fight or quarrel with anyone on that day. Yes I was at the same place and at the same time with her but we didnt fight or anything.i didnt even exchange words with the mentioned person.

I love how she referred to Pero as “the mentioned person”, it’s clear she can’t stand the chick…LOL. The interview also touched on her career in Nollywood and why she decided to join the league of 2Baba baby mamas. Read the rest of the interview here.

there is an interesting interview with Rapper Ikechukwu, hetalked about his ideal woman, who he sums up in two words…Sarah Ofili. I guess it’s safe to assume he’ll be wifing her up pretty soon. I also found it compelling that he admitted his dislike for recording commercial music. I mean let’s be honest most artistes loathe “selling out” but I guess it puts food on the table…I don’t think anyone, at least not in Naija music has admitted to it before. Maybe this is the the real reason he left Mo’Hits. A bit of the interview:

TARI: Do you get any job satisfaction when you have to make commercial tracks…

IKECHUKWU: NO!!

TARI: (laughing) Really? Not even the paper?

IKECHUKWU: Zero; but I have formulated a way to get satisfaction, which is in interacting with the crowd and me being this… but even now because of P, where we’re posing for the crowd …I hate that stuff I swear…

TARI: Then why do you it?

IKECHUKWU: Because the Nigerian society dictates that it’s the necessity..

NDLEA arrests grandfather for drug traffickingBy Oyetunji AbioyeFriday, 29 Oct 2010View All (4) Comment(s)Post CommentTwitterSend to friendShareOperatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have apprehended a 60-year-old grandfather and a 47-year-old grandmother in connection with illicit drug trafficking.A statement by the Head, Public Affairs, NDLEA, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, said both suspects allegedly ingested a total of 189 wraps of powdery substances weighing 3.140kgs as revealed by scanning machine at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos. The first suspect, Mr. Mobolaji Bello, 60, is a transport administrator and he resides at Surulere, Lagos while the second suspect, Mrs. Kehinde Afolabi, 47, is a trader in Owo, Ondo State. Ofoyeju said the suspects were being interrogated by NDLEA investigators. The NDLEA spokesman said Bello ingested 83 wraps of substances that tested positive to be heroin weighing 1.120kgs. He was said to have been stopped from smuggling the drugs to Detroit in the United States, through a KLM flight.Afolabi, according to the NDLEA, swallowed 106 wraps of substances that proved positive for cocaine weighing 1.920kgs, and she was arrested on her way to London during the screening of passengers on Virgin Atlantic flight. The Chief Executive Officer, NDLEA, Alhaji Ahmadu Giade, said that the agency’s strategic plan aimed at stemming the illicit trade in narcotics was yielding positive result. He said, “The end of the year is usually associated with rise in crime rate as most people strive to make money for the yuletide season. This inordinate quest for money compels many into illicit drug trafficking and other criminal activities. We have, therefore, prepared adequately to tackle the antics of drug barons.“We shall stop them by strategic reduction of our threats and maximisation of drug control opportunities. The use of older people will certainly not work as these arrests have shown.”The NDLEA Airport Commander, Alhaji Hamza Umar, said that scanning machines would always detect drugs irrespective of age and status.According to Hamza, “It is amazing that at their age, they could still involve in drug trafficking. The good thing is that we have the capacity to detect them as scanning machines do not consider age and status.”Bello who would have smiled to the bank with $10,000, if he was successful, said that it took him a year to be convinced into drug trafficking. He disclosed that he owns two busses for commercial transportation in Lagos, beside his auto parts business. He hails from Ekiti State and has four children who have all graduated from high school.“My wife had a surgical operation that cost about 1.5 million naira last year. I am still paying the debt I incurred from the medical bill. All the same, it all started last year when I contemplated smuggling drugs. They gave me bitter cola to swallow which I did but I later changed my mind after the trial. Three weeks ago, I was contacted by the same people and I agreed to do it for 10,000 dollars. Now I know that I have made a mistake,” Bello stated.Afolabi told narcotic officers that she smuggled drugs because she needed money for medication. She was to board a Virgin Atlantic flight to London when scanning machine revealed 106 wraps of cocaine in her stomach.According to Afolabi, “I needed money for my medication because I am sick. When I met the people in Lagos, they promised to pay me 3,500 pounds and I agreed to swallow the drugs. That was how they lodged me in a hotel where I ingested the drugs for about one and half day period. I am ashamed of myself.”

No fewer than one hundred patients from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) today stormed the State Governor’s Office, protesting the pains the on-going strike action by medical and dental officers have cost them.

In a reaction to the protests, the state government issued a statement urging medical and dental officers in the state to return to work in the interest of the citizenry as the strike action by the Medical Guild, an association of the state government doctors, enters its eight-week.

THEWILL gathered that patients suffering from sickle cell anemia, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and typhoid fever participated in the protest which called on Lagos State Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) to immediately intervene.

During the protest, the patients, who were led by Mr. Adeoye Modecai, explained that the strike had claimed the lives of at least 27 patients since the medical and dental officers downed tools about two months ago.

The protesting patients carried placards with inscriptions like: “Fashola, answer the doctors for the sake of the patients; “Have mercy on the masses; people are suffering for medical treatment; people are dying; we want doctors to start their work; Fashola; don’t let them spoil your good name; Fashola!; and Children are dying, their patients are also your electorates.”

In his address, Modecai, urged Fashola to sign the agreement he entered with the medical guild to enable them call off the strike.

“We have met with the striking doctors, and they said that the only thing they are asking from Fashola is to sign the agreement and not immediate payment of what is in the agreement,” Modecai said.

He said he saw at least 25 dead patients at the emergency ward on Wednesday being carried to the morgue in five ambulances. He added that “just this morning (Thursday), a woman and her baby died for lack of medical attention.” He said the nurses are refusing to attend to patients since there is no doctor to sign their prescriptions.

Also speaking after the protest, one of the protesting patients, Mrs. Yinka Olawale said the patients in LASUTH would relocate to Government House in Ikeja if Governor Fashola does not listen to the doctors by Monday.

Olawale, who is suffering from cancer, said she had paid about N365, 000 for her injections, adding that she has been injected thrice and that in the last 15 days she has not been able to get her two remainder shots because of the strike.

In a statement, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Comrade Opeyemi Bamidele noted with regret that a lot of citizens were being denied access to medical care as a result of the strike action pointing out that no wage increment would bring back lost lives..

Bamidele said government was not opposed to a review of salaries but that such a review must be done through a negotiating process and not predicated on the adoption of the federal government pay structure.

He recalled that the state government “has taken a series of actions to resolve the dispute, some of which include meeting with Medical Guild, Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria and Association of Resident Doctors and setting up of a sub-committee to determine the cost implication of the implementation of the CONMESS salary structure at all levels of healthcare.”

Tel Aviv - A shipment of 13 containers of weapons, disguised as building materials and seized in the Nigerian port of Lagos, may have been on its way to Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli Ha'aretz daily reported on Thursday, citing Israel defence officials..

The 13 containers, whose bill of lading listed construction materials, when opened on Tuesday was found to contain rocket launchers, grenades and other explosives.

They had been unloaded from an Iranian ship, and according to reports, the Nigerian State Security Service (SSS) had received intelligence beforehand about the intention to smuggle weapons in containers via Lagos.

Ha'aretz quoted an Israeli Foreign Ministry official as saying that the Israeli Embassy in Nigeria has been holding talks with the SSS and the Nigerian Foreign Ministry to try to find out more about the weapons.

A senior Israeli defence official said preliminary information indicated that the seizure of the weapons exposed a possible new arms smuggling route from Iran to Hamas, via Africa.

He said that, owing to beefed-up international supervision of Iranian ships, Tehran may have experienced difficulties in sending arms to Hamas via the Red Sea to the Sudan region and from there to Gaza via the Sinai peninsula..

Transfer by land

"Perhaps the Iranians were planning to unload the weapons in Nigeria and transfer them by land to Sudan and Sinai," Ha'aretz quoted the official as saying.

In March 2009, foreign media reported that the Israel Air Force attacked a convoy of weapons in Sudan on its way to Gaza. Israel refused to confirm its involvement in the attack.

In November 2009, the Israel Navy boarded the vessel Francop in the Mediterranean Sea. The ship was carrying hundreds of tons of weapons from Iran to Syria or Hezbollah in Lebanon.

In September this year an arms delivery from Iran to Syria was intercepted in Italy's Calabria port.

A few days later an arms shipment from North Korea to Syria was captured in a Greek port.

The squabble between the Ghanaian movie industry and that of Nigeria is getting nastier by the day. The latest casualty to fall victim to the rift between Ghallywood and Nollywood is Ghanaian Actor John Dumelo who was allegedly arrested in Nigeria a few days ago...

Information available to peacefmonline.com indicates that John was apprehended on set in Nigeria whiles shooting a new movie for a female Nigerian producer. The sources disclosed that the actor was arrested for refusing to pay an amount Ghanaian actors and producer are supposed to pay before they are permitted to act in any movie. John Dumelo confirmed the incident in and exclusive interview with peacefmonline and explained that there was an attempt to arrest him but he was not really arrested.
“Yes they nearly arrested me, it wasn’t an arrest as a matter of fact but I was nearly arrested.” Asked what the reason for his attempted arrest was, John said “It is because of this Ghana-Nigeria thing that we are supposed to pay something before we are allowed to shoot in Ghana or in Nigeria”. He further explained that he went to Nigeria to shoot a movie a few days ago and while he was on set, some members of the producers association in Nigeria came with the police to arrest him for shooting in Nigeria illegally.

According to John, they claim that the producer who brought him to Nigeria did not pay some association for bringing a Ghanaian there. “It was one of the associations which brought in the police. The police didn’t come there on their own, but eventually I wasn’t arrested. I was nearly taken to the police station for whatever reason I don’t know”.

Asked how he was able to prevent the police from arresting him he said “Obviously I have a Nigerian working permit and everything so I showed them my working permit and told them to sort thing out with the producer because it is the producer who has to pay them.

“For me I don’t have to pay anybody any money, because it was the producer who brought me there. So if there is any problem it is the producer they should talk to”. On how he was able to leave the country without been harmed or manhandled John said “Oh! I managed to finish filming the next day and then I left”.

However the president of the Actor Guild of Nigeria Segun Arinze has also confirmed the incident saying John was not arrested but he was stopped from working in Nigeria without permit. Speaking on Peace FM’s “Entertainment Review” program he said even though he was not in town when the incident occurred he was told on his return that John was not arrested. “Nobody arrested John Dumelo to the best of my knowledge I know he was stopped from working but he wasn’t arrested. That will be a bit of an exaggeration”.

Segun said there is no problem at all and that everything is under control. He also added that three days after the incident, The Actor Guild of Nigeria and producers had a meeting with the Ghana Actors Guild and the Ghanaian producers to solve the problem. “We are brothers and we will forever remain brothers. I don’t see anybody been arrested. It is a free enterprise; we just need to sort a few things out”. According to Mr. Arinze plans are far advanced for both parties to have a final decisive meeting either in Lagos or in Accra.
Segun used the opportunity to apologize to Ghallywood actor John Dumelo. “To John Dumelo I will say we are deeply sorry for what happened. He was embarrassed we are sorry about it, and believe me, we will work it out there is nothing to worry about”.

When “Entertainment Review” host Kwasi Aboagye asked Segun why Ghanaians and Nigerians are demanding some payment before they are allowed to act or shoot in their respective countries, he answered “Nobody has asked anybody to pay anything. I think there has been confusion in the system, some people are doing this to profit and be mischievous about it, and we will defiantly get them and flush them out. We are all one; I go to Ghana to do movies and Ghanaians come to Nigeria to work. I don’t see why we should be losing sleep over this I think it is something we can definitely sort out”.

This whole Ghana-Nigeria rift started when Ghanaians reportedly demanded $1,000 from Nigerians and Nigerians also threatened to demand $2,000 from Ghanaians. This has resulted in some gruesome exchanges between Ghana and their Nigerian counterparts. Earlier on in the year, actors Van Vicker, Majid Michel and others also faced similar situation in Nigeria and they had to return to Ghana for their own safety.

John Dumelo’s incident seems to be a retaliation to the Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG) who seized the camera of a Nigerian crew who were allegedly shooting in Ghana with the express permission few months ago. The crew, who were shooting on the Spintex Road in Accra, refused to identify who the producer was, when the FIPAG members confronted them with the police. They then decided to confiscate their camera until the producer owned up.
