Texas couple sentenced for enslaving widowed Nigerian mother of six, for nine years
By ANABELLE GARAY
.

he was a widow in a Nigerian village trying to raise six children when she says she met a man who told her he and his wife needed a nanny for their newborn. If she came with them to Texas, they would help support her children financially, give her free room and board, and pay $100 a month, the woman says she was told.

For a mother who couldn't read or write, lived in poverty and needed to buy her eldest daughter medication for sickle-cell anemia, it seemed like a desperately needed opportunity.

Instead, the woman alleges the couple – fellow Nigerians Emmanuel and Ngozi Nnaji – took her travel documents when she arrived in the Dallas-Fort Worth area on Dec. 11, 1997, and forced her to work 16 hours daily with no days off for nine years.

The couple monitored her calls to family in Nigeria, refused to let her return home, didn't pay her and failed to support her children as promised, authorities say. Emmanuel Nnaji also repeatedly raped her, according to a grand jury indictment handed up this week in Fort Worth.

Emmanuel and Ngozi Nnaji are charged with forced labor conspiracy, forced labor, harboring a domestic worker for financial gain, conspiracy to harbor for financial gain, document servitude and making false statements to federal agents. The indictment outlines the rape allegations as part of the forced labor conspiracy.

Attorneys for the couple did not immediately respond to messages Friday. A telephone listing for the Nnajis was disconnected.

Court documents show Ngozi Nnaji, 45, told investigators the woman, whom she knew from her native village, showed up at the couple's house in 1999 with a man named Charles. She ended up staying for seven years because Charles never came back. But the woman was not required to do any housework, Ngozi Nnaji told FBI agents.

Emmanuel Nnaji, 50, told agents the woman came to stay with them for two months in 1999, at the request of a relative. They allowed her to stay until she could "get on her feet." He also said she cared for one of his children in exchange for room and board but could "come and go as she pleased," according to a criminal complaint.

The woman, who The Associated Press is not naming because authorities say she is a victim of sexual assault, told investigators a starkly different story. She said she met Emmanuel Nnaji in 1996 while working as a nanny for his brother-in-law. Ngozi Nnaji's brother asked if she would go work for the couple in Texas and she agreed.

He then took her to the U.S. Embassy in Lagos and obtained a passport and visa for her in the name of Comfort Nnaji, court documents allege. Comfort is the name of Emmanuel Nnaji's mother, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The woman lived with the Nnajis first in their Irving apartment, then in their Arlington home, according to the complaint. After the couple had two more children, the woman cared for all three while also cooking and cleaning. She was not allowed to talk to anyone outside the home, according to the complaint.

Her family in Nigeria said they only occasionally received money, she told officials.

One day, the woman was able to hide in a closet and call her niece in Nigeria to tell her about her ordeal. The niece told a Nigerian priest who lived in Texas and was back home on vacation. He gave the niece his cell phone number and asked that she give it to her aunt, according to court documents.

The priest, identified in court documents as GU, returned to Texas in February 2006, established contact with the woman and helped plan her escape. On Feb. 24, 2006, the priest drove to Arlington, where the woman met him on a street corner and she fled in his car, the two told investigators.

It's unclear where the woman is now and the Justice Department won't disclose her location. The Nnajis each face up to 55 years in prison if convicted. Ngozi Nnaji faces deportation because she is a Nigerian citizen.

NFF sympathises with 62 Senators

NFF President Sani Lulu Abdullahi said on Friday that the Football Federation was grateful to God for sparing the lives of 62 Senators of the Federal Republic who were involved in a near mishap in Lagos on Thursday.

The lawmakers, according to reports, had chartered an aircraft from France for the flight to South Africa to support President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan at Friday’s opening ceremony in Johannesburg, to which the Nigeria leader was invited by President Jacob Zuma.

However, their aircraft developed landing gear fault just after take-off at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, and the pilot had to return quickly to base to avert disaster.

“We have the Almighty God to thank for this. What would we have been saying? God is great and it is important that we always give Him thanks anytime things like this happen,” said Lulu Abdullahi.

The Senators eventually arrived and joined a strong Nigeria reception team for President Jonathan who arrived in Johannesburg at about 6.30 pm South African time on Thursday morning.

Other News: SA Goes Nude for World Cup
Ooops! What an eye-catching scene over there in South Africa, venue of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which kicks off in less than 24 hours.
If you aren’t feeling the World Cup excitement yet, then the body language of thousands of South African ladies across the country readily puts you in great competition mood.
The babes are baring everything they have; their beauty, curves and poise all to make the visitors feel at home during the mundial.
While many say posing unclothed is a normal way of life amongst young South African ladies, some believe that the trend is restricted to the grossly under-developed areas of the former apartheid enclave. Whatever the insinuations, South Africans are already in a joyous celebration of their country’s readiness to host the world and they are not hiding it.

Only yesterday during the pre-World Cup friendly match between Chile and New Zealand, thousands of South Africans, including their ladies, stripped themselves unclothed and filed out to cheer the teams at the Kanyamazane Stadium, near Nelspruit.
The pretty damsels appeared happy to showoff their bodies as they danced around in Sandton, north of Johannesburg city centre, where a big party was held in anticipation of the beginning of the world showpiece.

Many of the ladies who spoke to international journalists say whatever they do is ‘for the good of the game’ and an honour for their nation. Reports say the presence of the ladies is not only felt on the streets of South Africa, some unsuspecting players are getting distracted, especially when the babes come around their training grounds and near their hotels. It was gathered that security personnel have been up and doing to ensure that the 32 teams, including the host, Bafana Bafana, are focused on the mundial, the first to be staged on Africa’s soil.

The House of Representatives leadership yesterday averted an outright confrontation with members amid allegations that it withheld approval for more funds that would raise members’ quarterly allowance to N42 million.

Anxiety rose at Tuesday’s sitting, which was the first to be held after allegations that lawmakers asked for a new allowance package were made public.

Up we go

Members, according to sources who were part of the House closed-door meeting two weeks ago, tried to convince their leadership on why the current N27.2 million allowance they receive every four months, needs to be reviewed upwards..

Short of funds apart from that appropriated for allowances, lawmakers understand the implication and have encouraged the Speaker, Dimeji Bankole, to go ahead and draw funds from other sources to the tune of N15.1 billion.

Mr. Bankole, according to sources close to him, is uncomfortable with the suggestion and has withheld his assent even after he orally agreed with the members.

However, he and his deputy, Usman Nafada, face an impeachment threat if they fail, the sources say.

But the House spokesperson, Eseme Eyiboh, who heads the committee on Media, denied the reports, saying the Speaker has no such powers to unilaterally raise pay, and so cannot be expected to do same.

Yesterday’s plenary was the first after the reports became public.

The notion gained fillip when Mr. Bankole failed to show up at the sitting, and Mr. Nafada had to conduct proceedings.

After preliminary procedures, Independence Ogunewe, a member representing Ahiazu Mbaise, Imo State, claimed his privilege as a lawmaker had been breached, and said he could only disclose his worry if Mr. Nafada ordered a closed-door session.

“What I am talking about, affects me, affects you and affects other members, it is not for the public,” he told said.

Targeting the Speaker

Mr. Nafada however insisted that the matter be discussed openly. “Go ahead and say it, say it, or you meet me in my office,” he said repeatedly, rejecting the option of an executive session, and pushing the session into a row that lasted more than 15 minutes.

Both lawmakers were then approached by colleagues, who prevailed on them to resolve the issue peacefully.

Sources indicate that Mr. Nafada’s effort against the closed-door sitting was in furtherance of an alternative belief that the agitation for new allowances, when made open and available to the media, would be severely weakened.

However, Mr. Ogunlewe finally apologised to the Deputy Speaker, who subsequently ordered for an executive session that lasted for more than one and a half hour.

The Senate, on Thursday, significantly advanced legislation on a new bill seeking to establish a social security system for Nigerian unemployed and aged..

The bill is sponsored by Anyim Ude (PDP, Ebonyi State). The bill proposes to set up a social security system that will enable the government pay out N15 000 or at least N10 000 monthly to unemployed graduates and persons above 60 in Nigeria.Photos: Youths Working on Rubbish heap Markets in Lagos.

Mr Ude, 69, was inspired to draft the bill after listening to contributions of a Senate motion on the corruption of the National Poverty Eradication Program (NAPEP) in February last year..

"It is estimated that over 70 per cent of our people live below poverty level and that is why I agree with the passionate suggestion -- that day ...that the Senate should devote one week of its session to address the issue of poverty and corruption in this country." Mr Ude said.

"This bill is another opportunity to put smiles on the faces of the aged and unemployed.

"Our children have no access to basic health care and education, unless their parents have money. Our system has made no provision backed by law for the unemployed, the destitute, the poor, and the aged. These crops of people are on their own, without hope or future. Some of them take their frustration out on the society by engaging in social vices and the society pays dearly for this," Mr Ude argued in his debate.

He added that even though it will cost the nation money, Nigeria will be better off as exemplified by the benefits other countries are reaping from similar systems.

He cited African countries benefiting from the scheme to include: Malawai, South Africa, Kenya, Mauritius, Botswana, Republic of Seychelles, and Libya.

The bill proposes that the beneficiaries of the system will be unemployed graduates of the colleges of education, polytechnics, and the universities, and people above 60 years.

The cost

The bill suggests two wages scenarios: a minimum of N10 000 and a maximum of N15 000 monthly. According to Mr Ude's estimations, based on a population growth rate of 2.5 per cent per annum, the scheme would cost the nation N77 billion in the next five years, starting from January next year, if the government decided to pay every beneficiary N10 000.

If the government decides to pay the maximum N15 000, it will cost the government N111.6 billion for five years.

He estimated that in 2011, it will cost the government N12.6 billion or N17.7 billion if they pay out N10 000 or N15 000 respectively. In 2012, it will cost 13.4 billion or 19.0 billion. In 2013, the scheme will cost 15.1 billion or 22.0 billion. In 2014 it will cost 17.05 billion or 24.96 billion. Arguing in favour of the bill, Uche Chukwumerije (PPA Abia State) said that it will require only a fraction of the loot politicians and past leaders robbed the nation of to run the scheme.

Pessimistic senators

Although the bill was accepted by majority of the senators, some were pessimistic and sceptic about the practicability of the recommendations of the bill.

Kabiru Gaya (ANPP Kano State) argued that it is too expensive for the nation. He said that considering that Nigeria produces about 70 000 graduates annually from the three categories of tertiary institutions in the country, the expenses will be too much.Photos:Vocal Slender of the "Illfated" BBC Welcome to Lagos Documentary.Who was billed to perform at the Indigo O2 Arena London.

Nicholas Ugbane (PDP Kogi State) argued that although the idea is good, it might be very difficult to distinguish the intended beneficiaries of the scheme.

"Do we have a reliable and dependable statistics of the unemployed? Can we identify a Nigerian?" he asked. "The idea is laudable but the kind of system we have will make it difficult to run." Others, however, argued that the cost of not instituting the social security system is higher than the cost of running it. They also argued that the possibility of corrupting the system should not deter the bill.

"You cannot rule out fraud, but the fear of fraud cannot overrule the importance of the bill." Bassey Ewa-Henshaw (PDP Cross River State) argued.

The bill was later committed to three Senate committees who would organise a public hearing on it and report back to the Senate for passage into law. It is, however, very unlikely that the bill will be passed into law before the expiration of the present Senate because the committees working on the bill were not given a time limit. High priority was not placed on the bill and the Senate has only one year left in their tenure.

WRITTEN BY SHARAFA DAUDA AND YAHAYA IBRAHIM, MAIDUGURI
WEDNESDAY, 16 JUNE 2010 05:26
A twenty eight year old qur’anic school student resident in Bulabulin Ngarnam Ward, Maiduguri was yesterday sentenced to death by hanging for killing his 14-year old wife, Amsa Usman Abdu, over disagreement on sex.

The convict said for seven months, his wife only allowed him access to her three times.

A Maiduguri High Court ruled yesterday that Abubakar Goni should be hang by his neck until he is certified dead, declaring that he used a kitchen knife to stab his wife on several parts of her body until she died because she refused to have sexual intercourse with him around 3:00am on October 22, 2003. The presiding judge, Justice Abdullahi Sanya Yerima, said the man committed culpable homicide punishable with death as provided for in Section 221(b) of the Penal Code..

Goni had during his arraignment told the court that the marriage between him and late Amsa was contracted by his father against his wish, but he accepted his father’s decision in good faith and endured to live with the wife despite her “stubbornness”. He said, “My father married Amsa for me. I never knew her before then but I accepted her as my wife in good faith. During our married life, which lasted for seven months, she disregarded and disrespected me. Whenever I wanted to have sex with her, she refused. For the seven months we lived together, we only had sex three times. I reported her conduct to my father several times, but he begged me to approach her gently as she was still a small girl. My father even reported her to her father, who personally advised her on two occasions”, parts of his statement to the police read.

Goni said on that day, around 2:00am while they were asleep in the same room within his father’s compound where they lived, his late wife repeated her usual turn down.

“I demanded to have sex with her, but she refused. I begged her several times but she still refused. I then left her inside the room, went out and searched for a knife, which I got in the kitchen. I took possession of the knife and went back to the room with annoyance and stabbed her several times at different places,” he confessed.

In his testimony, Goni’s father, Alhaji Goni Umara, said an unusual sound woke him from sleep in the night and he rushed to the scene and found his son with a knife, who told him that he had stabbed his wife. Bintu Goni Umara, a step mother of the husband said, “The knife used by Goni in stabbing his wife belongs to me, and on that day, I left it in the kitchen.” The judge said he convicted Goni as charged even though his counsel pleaded for leniency on ground of age, being a first time offender, and the fact that Goni was legally married to the deceased but was denied sexual intercourse. The counsel said sex is an undisputable right in marriage and refusing Goni made him to act in anger and frustration.

But Justice Abdullahi Sanya Yerima insisted that the act was a grave and heinous crime and the section under which he was charged provides no option.

In another homicide case heard in the court, one Fadimatu Ibrahim who was accused of killing her husband, Ibrahim Usman, by stabbing him on the chest with a knife was freed.

Fadimatu, a native of Baram in Hawul Local Government Area of Borno State, was said to have stabbed her husband with a knife on May 17, 2004 and was charged with culpable homicide, which is not punishable with death as provided under section 224 of the Penal Code.

Justice Sanya discharged and acquitted Fadimatu for want of evidence. According to him, the prosecutor failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the accused was guilty of the offence as required in any homicide case, saying there was no proof that Usman died or that Fadimatu caused his death as earlier filed in the case of no submission by the defence counsel, Barrister A. Shettima.

People are talking and saying that What Turai did was mere childsplay that we are about to see the mother of all First Ladies in 9ja ! READ ON: Shocking Revelations await

Article:

It used to be that our government officials, their wives, aides, and hangers-on were prolific in the exercise of poor judgment and the making of horrible choices that always exacted a terrible price from the rest of us. When I read newspaper reports last week that Mrs. Patience Jonathan had travelled to Dubai and Beirut “on a private visit”, I concluded that our nightmare had just been made worse. It means that these fellas ruining our lives in Abuja and the state capitals have now graduated from the congenital exercise of poor judgment that afflicts all of them, to an outright assassination of judgment.

Let’s dispense first with some of the half-witted commentaries of the ponces of power that have been running riot on the Internet. Dame (the title maniacs have quietly introduced the ‘Dame’ thing in the media) Patience Jonathan, we are told, has the right to travel anywhere privately as a free citizen of Nigeria bla bla bla and more bla. Fine. The emergency contractor-defenders of the civil rights of the First Lady should please remind her not to use the presidential jet for the Abuja-Lagos leg of such private trips next time. Once the Nigerian taxpayer foots the bill of any part of the First Lady’s private trips, it is our responsibility to make our basketmouths to start dey leak again - apologies to Fela.

Of all the destinations that Patience Jonathan could have visited on this horribly ill-timed and unbelievably ill reflected “private trip”, it had to be Dubai, an increasingly popular money laundering route/destination for Nigerian politicians, government officials, and their courier-wives and concubines. And this is a Patience Jonathan who is still waiting for her day in court for corruption charges bordering on money laundering (by the way, her EFCC indictment file must not disappear)! Pray, when your neighbours suspect you of stealing the dogs in the neighbourhood for 404 purposes, must you be heard boasting of your affection for puppies in the market?

It gets worse.

Our friend, Elder Chief Stakeholder James Ibori, was apprehended by Interpol in Dubai. One week later, Patience Jonathan is on the plane to Dubai. Is there, by any chance, any of the handlers of the Jonathans who was thinking correctly?

The couple has a retinue of aides and advisers responsible for the packaging of their every move. We need to know which of them thought it was a great idea for the Patience Jonathan to head out to Elder Chief Stakeholder Ibori’s embrace in Dubai at this most inauspicious of times.

Ibori’s embrace? Am I perhaps stretching metaphor and speculation? You bet I am! I am more than happy to help the Jonathans ruin the little goodwill that ushered them into Aso Rock since squandering that goodwill appears to be their first order of business. And that is precisely what Nigerians are doing online. It’s an orgy of wild speculations out there. What does Elder Chief Stakeholder Ibori know?

What is the nature of the beans he is threatening to spill to the Dubai and British authorities that may have warranted presidential pacification? Does he perhaps have more embarrassing details on that little matter of Patience Jonathan’s money laundering wahala? Who knows what the Yar’Adua cabal revealed to him about the Jonathans when he played godfather over Aso Rock.

There is also considerable Internet chatter about madam having gone on a jewelry shopping spree. All the chatter about going to pacify Elder Chief Stakeholder Ibori or waste our money on jewelry is deserved. That is what you get when you have a Presidency that has been so perennially clueless in the management of public perception. Segun Adeniyi and his crew perpetually mismanaged the public perception of the Yar’Aduas. They were so incompetent that they couldn’t even tell coherent lies to the Nigerian people. Ima Niboro and his crew don carry dem own come. Not one of them suggested to their Oga and his Madam that this woolly-headed trip couldn’t have come at a worse time?

Beyond Internet chatter about the ill-advised trip to Dubai, it does appear that we, first lady-weary Nigerians, will once again have to contend with the spectre of that unconstitutional assault on our sensibilities. Patience Jonathan is already showing all the symptoms of a looming no break no jam first ladyship. There is always a competition to surpass the last occupant of that constitutionally non-existent office in overbearing showiness, gra-gra, and ostentation.

What is wrong with Nigerian men? Why do they find it so difficult to tell their ever ambitious madams that our Constitution does not recognise their predilection for transforming oga’s political office into a divahood launching pad? Every time someone gets selected to office, they make a heck of a noise about not tolerating the first lady aberration, only to get to the bedroom and sing a different tune to madam. After Maryam Babangida, Miriam Abacha, Stella Obasanjo, and Turai Yar’Adua, Nigerians are more than ready for a return to the first ladyless days of Shehu Shagari and Muhammadu Buhari. Deopka Goodluck Jonathan must therefore be advised to exercise no patience with Patience on this matter.

Kaduna: Niger Republic national plucks 10-yr-old boy’s eyes for rituals

A 20-year-old man from Niger Republic, who is also a son of an Imam residing in a village in Birnin-Gwari area of Kaduna State, was arrested recently along four others for allegedly plucking the two eyes of a 10-year-old Almajiri (street urchin) for rituals..

The culprit (name witheld) in an interview with Daily Sun at the Police headquarters in Kaduna said, one Mallam asked him to get the two eyes, which he promised to use in preparing charms that would make him invincible.

The suspect said he lured the boy to follow him to a nearby farm:

“When I took the boy to the bush, I tied him down and came back and told the chief priest. He gave me a concoction which I drank and another charm to tie on my waist.

“I went back to the boy in the bush, pinned him down to the floor after placing a charm given to me by the chief priest around his neck. I then plucked his two eyes with a sharp knife and took it to the chief priest.

“I was caught by the villagers when I went back to collect the hoe and knife I left at the scene.”

The culprit said he regretted committing the act because according to him he was not in his senses when the crime was committed:..

“I am a farmer and I do give people spiritual help before I was introduced into thisact.

“I worked with two male and female spirits which I named ‘Mallam’ an‘Bilki’.

“My father is from Niger Republic and an Imam in Birnin Gwari LGA has no knowledge of my involvement in these activities.

“He has once shown his disapproval of my movement with these people.”

He blamed the chief priest for continuously pestering him to be involved:

“I have never committed this act before. It is this chief priest, and one Soho Bello (not real name) who promised to pay me one million naira if I could bring the fresh human eyes to prepare charm for invisibility.

“Soho Bello said he will be taking it to a big man in Abuja.”

The 42-year-old Bello who was among those arrested, however denied his involvement in the act:

“I was at my farm in Jaji near Kaduna when the Nigerien and one other person accosted me that they will help me with weapon resistant and invincibility charm. “I did not set my eyes on them since January 2010 until last Sunday morning when I was arrested and taken to Birnin Gwari.”

The 63-year-old chief priest, who was caught by the police with the fresh eyes in his house, initially said that he had no choice than to admit all allegations against him, only for him to make a u-turn to say the Nigerien brought the fresh human eyes to him for safekeeping when the people who saw him as he went to recover his hoe were chasing him.

“I have no regret in this whole issue because I know I am innocent,” the chief priest insisted.

When our reporter contacted the victim (name witheld) at the National Eye Center, Kaduna, where he is receiving treatment, he said he is one of the over 70 almajirai (street urchins) of about his age who came from Bungudu in Zamfara State, to Kaduna. He said the suspect “asked one of his two wives to give me food when I came to his house begging.

“He took me to the bush to clear his farmland at the cost of N60.00)

“He asked me to lie with my back resting on my hands and close my eyes so that he can administer medicine for ‘knowledge’ on me. “He placed short rope-like charm around my neck which immediately sedated me.

“I could feel pains when he was plucking my eyes with a sharp object but I could not struggle. He dug a hole and buried me alive.

“I managed to push some sands on my face after he had left as I began to recover from the ‘sedative’ and shouted faintly upon hearing sounds of passersby who came immediately and rescued me.”

For only $1,900 a month, you can rent an apartment President Obama lived in during his years at Columbia University.

The apartment itself is shabby, a one-bedroom, third-floor walk-up. And while living there is unlikely to shed any light on the issue, it’s interesting that so little is known about that era of Obama’s life.

Obama spent two years Occidental College in Los Angeles, transferring to Columbia University in New York City in 1981 and graduating two years later. Little is known about Obama’s time at Occidental, but even less is known about his time at Columbia.

The president did not release his transcripts from either school during his campaign for the presidency, as John McCain, John Kerry, George W. Bush and Al Gore did. Occidental and Columbia have said they are prevented by federal law from releasing the transcripts.

Obama’s thesis on nuclear disarmament, on which he spent a year at Columbia, has apparently been lost. Obama says he doesn’t have a copy and his professor at the time thinks he lost it when he moved a few years ago.

Obama barely mentions his years at Columbia in his two autobiographies. He has said he didn’t know many people at Columbia and that he spent most of his time in the library reading, “like a monk.” Indeed, Fox News contacted 400 of Obama’s former classmates – no one remembered him.

Some of Obama’s Columbia classmates have since come forward, saying they remembered Obama there. Both schools have confirmed Obama was their student.

Columbia is where Obama “stopped getting high,” he wrote, which his old roommate verified to reporters.

To the New York Times, Obama “declined repeated requests to talk about his New York years, release his Columbia transcript or identify even a single fellow student, co-worker, roommate or friend from those years.” A spokesman told the Times Obama “doesn’t remember the names of a lot of people in his life.”

At Occidental, Obama was better known by classmates. There, he gave what is thought to be his first public speech. In it, he urged his school to disinvest from South Africa because of apartheid.

In “Dreams From My Father,” Obama wrote he socialized with black students but also “the foreign students. The Chicanos. The Marxist professors and structural feminists and punk-rock performance poets … When we ground out our cigarettes in the hallway carpet or set our stereos so loud that the walls began to shake, we were resisting bourgeois society’s stifling constraints.”

A professor at Occidental, Roger Boesche, told the Los Angeles Times Obama was “a very thoughtful student and a very curious student … You didn’t take my European Modern class without wanting to think about deep ideas.”

The White House did not reply to a request for comment.

Naija don dey hard o ! Even Oil Company staff don dey kidnap !.

Omotayo Mobolaji Johnson, a geologist and staff of Chevron PLC has been arrested in connection with the attempt to kidnap a bank executive at Ikoyi, Lagos.

Two middle-aged suspects, Tommy Ebikeme and Edward Anigbhoro were also arrested during the June 1st kidnaping which the police said was masterminded by Mr. Johnson who allegedly used a pseudo name ‘Olumide.’ He was allegedly assisted by a woman called Anita to recruit both Mr. Ebikeme and Mr. Anighboro who are militants from the Niger Delta, to carry out the kidnap.

Their luck ran out when the police got a tip off and arrested them when they were about to kidnap their victim at Ikoyi.

The Lagos State commissioner of police, Marvel Akpoyibo while parading the suspects at the state command yesterday said the command’s intelligence -led policing strategy led to the arrest of the suspect.

“Events that led to the arrest of the suspects started on June 1st, 2010, when the command’s intelligence Unit intercepted information that a group of persons had perfected plans to kidnap a high profile target in Lagos. Members of the gang recruited from the Niger delta of Nigeria were said to have intended to kidnap the target victim from his office in Lagos island and whisk him away to Ibadan, where Omotayo Mobolaji Johnson had a farm at the outskirt of the town where the victim was to be taken to, after which a demand for ransom will be made.” He said, “Acting on the strength of the information, intelligent and undercover operatives were deployed in and around the office and premises of the target victim for high level surveillance mission, the efforts of the police yielded positive result when hours later, operatives were able to effect the arrest of three suspects connected to the plot.”

Mr. Akpoyibo added that preliminary investigation shows that the kidnap was masterminded by Mr. Johnson.

“His wife works in one of the companies owned by the father of the target victim. The suspect worked with one Anita now at large. Mr. Johnson owns a four star hotel and other investment in Ibadan. He promised the other suspects a cash reward of ten million naira from a windfall of fifty million naira expected to be made from the illicit deal if the victim was taken to Ibadan. Some substances recovered from the suspects include sleep inducing drugs, syringes which they had intended to inject the victim with the substances Halothane and Velum to facilitate his losing consciousness before moving him to Ibadan.” Mr. Akpoyibo said.

Mr. Johnson however declined to comment on his involvement in the crime. He said “I will not say anything until my lawyer is here.” Mr. Ebikeme however confessed to the crime. He indicted Mr. Johnson saying he was the one who recruited them and drove them to the scene of the botched kidnap.

The oil company, Chevron could not be reached as at press time for its comment.

2011: Politicians invade banks for loans *Jonathan's men plot campaign strategies *Hold meetings in Abuja, Kaduna, Asaba *Pressure mounts on president to declare interest

IN preparation for the 2011 elections, politicians have now invaded banks for credit facilities in various banks to actualise their ambitions, Nigerian Tribune has gathered.

The development, it was gathered, may not be unconnected with the Central Bank of Nigeria's (CBN's) directives on credit facilities to politicians.

A top bank executive, who pleaded anonymity, told the Nigerian Tribune at the weekend that CBN directing banks to resume lending to politicians was unfortunate.

According to him, politicians are well known not to keep promises, stating that the current directive can lead to another era of non-performing loans in the sector.

In his contribution, a financial analyst and Chief Operating Officer, Twinsronk Consulting, Mr. Okechukwu Amadi, said for the apex bank to have reversed itself was highly regrettable.

He observed that though there were stringent conditions for accessing credit facilities in the various banks, the politicians would always want to circumvent such rules..

He submitted that though the apex bank had no right to bar banks from issuing credits to any group of people, it must ensure the conditions were strictly followed.

"The fact is that the CBN cannot debar banks from lending to a set of people. What they should do is to ensure politicians meet the stipulated conditions or else the proposed AMC meant to take care of bad debts in the financial system will be of no effect," he warned.

As a result, confusion has enveloped the banking industry following CBN's current directive to banks to resume lending to politicians.

Investigations by Nigerian Tribune revealed that the apex bank had initially instructed banks to be wary of politicians thronging various banks for credit facilities in preparation for 2011 elections, stressing that they were capable of throwing the sector back to crisis.

It was in view of this that the apex bank earlier threatened to sanction banks that failed to comply with its directive on the use of credit information from credit bureaus before granting any loans.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that following sustained pressure mounted on the CBN governor, Mallam Lamido Sanusi, especially in the light of the recent political developments in the country, the apex bank had to retrace its steps by issuing directive to banks to start lending to politicians, denying that it ever instructed banks not to lend to them.

Only last week, the CBN, in a statement signed by its Head, Corporate Affairs, Mr. Mohammed Abdullahi, entitled 'No Directive To Banks Against Lending To Politically Exposed Persons', stated that it had never directed Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) to stop granting credit facilities to PEPs, stressing that such would amount to the CBN meddling in the internal credit administration processes and procedures of banks.

According to the apex bank, "For the avoidance of doubt, banks and Other Financial Institutions (OFIs) are at liberty to grant credit facilities to any individual and/or a corporate entity in line with the institution's Credit Policy and in consonance with extant rules and regulations."

In a circular to banks and financial institutions signed by the Director, Banking Supervision, Mr. Samuel Oni, which was earlier sent to banks, the CBN pointed out that "In its effort to provide a platform for financial institutions to strengthen their credit appraisal procedures with a view to enhancing credit quality and responsive credit behaviour in the nation's financial system, the CBN recently licensed three private credit bureaux to provide credit history on borrowers.

"Following the release of the Guidelines on Licensing, Operations and Regulations of Credit Bureau issued by CBN in October 2008, it has become imperative to issue this circular directing bank and other financial institutions to partner with the licensed credit bureaux in order to enhance the performance of their operations."

Consequently, the apex bank said it was now mandatory for banks and other financial institutions under the purview of the CBN to comply with sections 5.4.3 and 5.4.5 of the Guidelines on Licensing, Operations and Regulations of Credit Bureaus in Nigeria as follows: Have data exchange agreement with at least two credit bureaus; obtain credit report from at least two credit bureaus before granting any facility to their customers; and obtain quarterly credit report from at least two credit bureaus for all previous loans/facilities granted to enable the determination of the borrowers current exposure to the financial system, adding that banks and other financial institutions were advised to comply with this circular with immediate effect as failure to do so would attract appropriate sanctions.

Meanwhile, supporters of President Goodluck Jonathan have set machinery in motion to ensure his entry into the 2011 presidential contest ahead of the next national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Till now, the president had not formally indicated his interest in the 2011 presidential election, just as some people have advised him not to run.

Indications that more forces are rooting for Jonathan emerged at the weekend, with a series of meetings holding in Abuja, Kaduna and Asaba, Delta State, by Jonathan's supporters who attempted to preview the 2011 elections with the possibility of drafting him into the presidential race.

Two of such meetings which took place at Sheraton and Bolingo hotels, the Nigerian Tribune learnt, considered all options available to Jonathan on the 2011 polls, with a resolve to conduct an independent survey to ascertain the level of his acceptability across the geo-political zones of the federation.

A senator was said to be coordinating the Kaduna caucus, most of who were said to be working on the PDP structures to make them to accommodate the desire of Jonathan to contest the presidential election.

A member of the caucus, Mallam Umar Farouk, told the Nigerian Tribune that Jonathan might not have much trouble in convincing the North about wanting to win a full four-year term, as the people from the region were already familiar with him.

He said the recent remarks by some Northern elite urging Jonathan to contest were a reflection of grass roots politicians from the region, who believe that Jonathan could make them feel more of government presence which they lacked when the late President Umaru Yar'Adua was in the saddle.

Also, Jonathan's supporters in Delta State had been perfecting strategies on how to raise the ante for his interest in the next presidential election, having mapped out a series of sensitisation events for the purpose.

The group, known as Goodluck Jonathan Support Group, had scheduled a book launch as the first in the series of events planned to prepare the ground for the president to enter the contest and had also planned a rally to be held in Asaba and Port Harcourt for same purpose before the end of July.

The national coordinator of the group, Honour-able Aneke Ifemeni, told the Nigerian Tribune that members of his group had written a book comprising 101 reasons they felt should propel Jonathan to contest in 2011.

Aneke said the group had supported the late President Yar'Adua for second term, adding that his death did not mean governance had changed.

He said since he had paired with Jonathan for his presidency, it would be incumbent on Nigerians to allow the administration to remain in order to continue with the programmes it had inaugurated for the sustenance of rule of law and democracy in the country.

"Government is a continuum and our belief is that if Jonathan who started the programme with Yar'Adua is allowed to remain in power, he would have the right frame of mind to pilot government's affairs in line with the goals set by the late Yar'Adua," he said.

However, plots by some aspirants and their supporters for the post of the national chairman of the PDP notwithstanding, President Jonathan is said to have kept all stakeholders guessing on his clear direction on the decision.

It was gathered in Abuja, at the weekend, that the president had refused to open up to any of the contending groups on the matter.

A number of projections are coming up in the process of the emergence of the new PDP chairman.

While the South-East believed that it should be allowed to produce a replacement for Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, some forces were already angling for the emergence of the new chairman from the North, in line with the reversed zoning arrangement.

The belief in the South-East was that whoever was appointed would complete Ogbulafor's tenure, which should lapse in 2012, but a fresh thinking was indicating that the new chairman should still emerge on the basis of the existing zoning arrangement, which would see the post retained in the South-East.

Sources in the administration said President Jonathan had not opened up to any of the contending forces on the choice of the new chairman.

While some sources said the president was behind the push to install the former national secretary of the party, Chief Benard Eze, as the new chairman, others indicated that the president's camp was in favour of Chief Okwe-zelezie Nwodo.

Other sources close to the government said Jonathan was considering the Senior Special Assistant on Political Affairs, Senator Polycarp Nwite, as a way of pacifying the camp the late President Yar'Adua.

Nwite was the Nigerian Ambassador to Botswana before he was recalled by Yar'Adua and appointed political adviser.

He is regarded as one of the core supporters of the late General Shehu Musa Yar'Adua, founder of the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM).

It was gathered that the intervention of former President Olusegun Obasanjo in the selection process had not forced Jonathan to change

his posture and the president had not confirmed a particular choice to any of the stakeholders.

"The president is bidding his time on the choice of the national chairman of the PDP. He wants the best for the party and I won't be surprised if any of those so-called frontline candidates loses out," a source said.

Chief Obasanjo was said to be backing a former Nigerian Ambassador to Togo, Ambassador Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi, for the top job, while some people had also linked him with the support for the former national vice chairman of the party in the South-East, Chief Nze Ozichukwu Chukwu.

The PDP Governors' Forum and some members of the PDP Reform Group were said to be backing the former Senate President, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, while other forces were said to be queuing behind the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, General Ike Nwachukwu.

But a source said of Jonathan's thinking: "the president is keeping issues around the new chairman close to his chest. So far, we can say that he has kept the stakeholders guessing. He wants all the segments of the party to come up with suggestions before he gives the final nod."

Meanwhile, the National Interest Group (NIG) in the Senate is set to contribute a voice to the ongoing debate on the choice of the new PDP chairman.

It was gathered that the group had scheduled a meeting for Tuesday in Abuja to finalise talks on the preferred choice of candidate for the PDP top job.

The group, which spearheaded the confirmation of Jonathan as acting president in February, had continue to bond together since its formation in January. The NIG is closely working with the House of Representatives version, the Nigeria First Forum (NFF).

Sources said the two groups were working towards presenting a common candidate for the post of the national chairman of the party.

Sacked workers of Mouka Foam were seen loitering around the company premises on Tuesday. They were hoping that they would be called back or compensated by the company for letting them go ‘unjustly.'jpeg&STREAMOID=WidT6tNavv_xlDL3eyQgCC6SYeqqxXXqBcOgKOfTXxS9AUjtwEwsUT2QysqASkv2nW_PgxgftuECOcfJwS6Jtlp$r8Fy$6AAZ9zyPuHJ25T7a9GKDSxsGxtpmxP0VAUyHL6IDcZHtmM2t7xO$FHdJG95dFi6y2Uma3vSsvPpVyo-

About 71 workers of Mouka Foam were sacked because some of them refused to work last week Thursday, due to the public holiday declared by the federal government to mourn the late President Umaru Yar'Adua, who died on 5th of May, 2010.

When NEXT visited the head office of Mouka Foam Limited on Tuesday, located at Plot ‘M', Awosika Avenue, Ikeja Industrial Estate, Lagos, some of the workers said they hope the company would rethink its decision; while others sat dejectedly by the gate.

A casual worker, who identified himself as Mr. Chibike, said, "On Thursday, the Federal Government declared a public holiday but the management insisted that we should work, but the union said that we should be paid before we work, since it is supposed to be a work free day. But, the management did not agree, so the union said we should go home since they did not agree. Only for us to come on Monday (10th May) and we were told that we have been sacked."

One of the former leaders of the workers' union at the Mouka Foam branch of the National Union of Chemical Footwear Rubber Leather and Non-Metallic Product Employees (NUCFRLANMPE), who craved anonymity, narrated that on the said day, the plant manager insisted that they must work, but they (former union leaders) pleaded that the management gives the workers some incentives, since they would be working on a day that had been declared work free.

"But the Management refused to heed our call, and so we told the workers that they can go and honour the memory of the late President if they want to go, and they can stay if they want to stay. They printed names of people that didn't stay and sacked them without notice. Some had spent years here, and some have been injured in the course of doing this work."

About 71 of the casual workers were sacked out of 99 casual workers. The 28 remaining workers were some of the workers that stayed behind," he said.

Mr. James, one of the workers who was not sacked, said they no longer have a union. The former union has been dissolved.

"So, nobody is fighting for them. They (Mouka Foam) used the police to chase them away from the compound," he said. Mr. Ikechi, also a casual worker that was sacked, cried out, "I have been working here for more than 3 years. It is shocking what they did to us. I don't know where to start from. I am a student doing part-time at the University of Lagos. How do I pay my fees now?"

A public relations officer for Mouka Foam, Agbo Agbo, in a phone conversation, said that the casual workers were not sacked because they refused to work on a public holiday. But that they decided to let some casual workers go because they have no need of them.

The President of The National Union of Chemical Footwear Rubber Leather and Non-Metallic Product Employees (NUCFRLANMPE), Boniface Isok, said that they are not aware of any problems their members may be facing at Mouka Foam.

A long standing cause
Although there have been less news on the struggle against casual staffing in the country, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said it has not yet relented in its effort to fight against the use of casual staff by companies and businesses in the country.

Denja Yaqub, the assistant general secretary of the NLC, defending the lull in the union's fight against temporary staffing, told NEXT in a previous report:
"Most people believe the NLC has lost the fight against casualisation because of the other struggles we have embarked on. The fight against casual or contract staffing by employers in the country is still on, and we are planning to take it up as a big issue from December to June, next year (2010).

"Casual workers are not entitled to be part of any trade unions, as they are not fully employed. This has been affecting the way the employers treat their staff, and the struggles for a decent workplace by the trade unions."

Mr. Yaqub maintained that the practice of engaging people in casual jobs infringes on the right of Nigerians to have decent jobs, adding that, "Section 42 of the Act empowers Labour to fight against it, and this is what we will do since the government has failed us."

9ja politics is now like a football league where people hange clubs at will !

The lawmaker representing Orhionmwon East constituency in the State House of Assembly, Patrick Aisowieren, has formally left the Peoples Democratic Party for the Action Congress (AC).

At a brief ceremony in Benin City, at the weekend, Mr. Aisowieren said he was decamping to the Action Congress to join the governor of the state, Adams Oshiomhole, and his team to develop the state.

“I appreciate the good works of the state governor and I want to work with him and his team to develop Edo State” he said.

According to him, in the next few weeks, there will be a crusade organized by his numerous supporters in his constituency where they will all publicly declare their support for the AC.

Mr. Oshiomhole who, on behalf of the AC, welcomed the lawmaker to the party and thanked him for the confidence reposed in the state government and the AC.

“I have often maintained that the essence of political engagement is to create open participation and our democratic culture must accord respect to each and every one and it must be based on the principles that the people are the king,” he said.

The governor reiterated that everybody was considered as family in the AC irrespective of when they joined the party, and assured Mr. Aisowieren that, “You have all rights, duties, obligations and there are no discriminations on account of when you join the party.”

Working together

Mr. Oshiomhole disclosed that it is the expectation of the people of Edo State that, “we all work together to sustain the pace of development going on across the state, which we have started and may God bless us for our disposition to reposition our state.”

Speaker of the State of Assembly, Bright Omokhodion, described the defection of Aisowieren from the PDP to the AC as a very fundamental step towards freedom.

“This is to state the fact that we are ruled by the concern for our people because the House of Assembly is a selected representation of the people,” he said.

While welcoming the former PDP member to the AC, on behalf of the members and principal officers, the Speaker said that Mr. Aisowieren’s decision to return to the fold of the progressives was personal to him, adding that he chose a divine calling because he is a true representative of the people.

“We are all embracing progress in Edo State and we are expecting more decampees from the PDP to the AC,” he said.

Mr. Aisowieren was among the 11 lawmakers that have stayed away from house proceedings since the sack of the principal officers of house headed by former speaker Zakarwanu Garuba and other PDP members in the house.

No wonder Garri sometimes smells like petrol !
The police in Lagos State have arrested a middle aged woman, Mrs. Kemi Omoye, with 25 big kegs of substance suspected to be petrol.

advertisement

Omoye, who sells garri, a Yoruba staple food, at Ikorodu area of the state, was accosted on Friday by policemen attached to PSS 065 unit on her way from Igbogbo, a suburb of Ikorodu.

Our correspondent gathered that the garri seller attracted the interest of the police because of the fact that the kegs filled the car she chartered to the extent that it was difficult for the driver to see his back from the driving mirror.

The car marked AG 542 DDA belonged to Olawale Abdul who was also the one driving it at the time the police stopped the car. He is also being held for interrogation.

Lagos State police spokesman, Mr. Frank Mba, said the point at which the suspects were stopped at Igbogbo was not from an NNPC pipeline.

He said, "We discovered that the pipeline was broken and people had been siphoning oil from it."

But Omoye told our correspondent that the substance in the kegs was payment for some bags of garri he sold to an unnamed man.

"He gave them to me because he did not have money to pay. He said I should sell them and used the money as my payment," she said, adding that each keg was supposed to be sold at the rate of N1,500.

Also, the driver said he did not know that the substance was petrol.

He said, "I was merely doing my job. She called me and told her my price and she agreed. The thing smelt like Ogogoro, i did not know it was petrol."

However Mba said the police was accusing the two persons of being oil bunkerers, "And the police in Lagos state are determine to stop their activities and the activities of people who vandalise pipelines and other government properties," he said.

Marked for Deportation, Ghanaian Scholar Cries for Help
Malam Issah Hassan Tikumah, a former Social Studies lecturer at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria has alleged that he is being hounded by security men and some “reactionary forces” because of a book he wrote on the niqab (face veil worn by Muslim women). He said he now lives in fear. In a letter to THISDAY editor, Tikumah, who is a Ghanaian, revealed that his troubles started early this year when he published a book titled, Niqab (Face-veil): An Exemplary Sunnah or a Repugnant Innovation? He said some people, who opposed the contents of the book, threatened violence. To pacify them, the management of the university stopped the publication of the book and sacked him with immediate effect.

But his problems did not go away after the sack. He was detained by the police and some people wrote a petition to the state government. “It is a book I have published with all the necessary facts and yet I’m being treated like a hardened criminal just because some reactionary elements within the society are against that book. More than a month after my release or bail, I still have to report to the security everyday like a criminal whose run-away from prosecution is not unexpected – all this trouble for merely publishing a book some people are not happy with!”

Though some of his students have protested his sack and shabby treatment, he noted that security agencies have continued to harass him, threatening him with deportation in spite of the fact that he has “lived in Nigeria for the last 12 years, received my higher education in Nigeria and three of my children are Nigerians by birth.”
He said the most worrying aspect of the security treatment is the insistence of some policemen that they are watching him and would deal with him anytime they are ready, stressing that they now call him a “CIA agent disguising as a Muslim” so that they can easily hang him..
Tikumah rued the fact that he is being treated so badly despite the fact that he has “been struggling for the cause of Islam for the past 31 years.” He said, “And how could anyone accuse me of threatening peace and security in Nigeria when I have spent a great deal of my time, energy and money over the years working to foster peace and security in Nigeria?”

…says he is a performing governor

IMMEDIATE past Governor of Lagos State, Sen. Bola Tinubu, has joined other
prominent Lagos indigenes to lent his support for the continuation of his predecessor, Governor Babatunde Fashola, in office, saying he has performed creditably well, contrary to the widespread rumours making the round that the former governor does not want Governor Fashola to run for a second term.

This came just as Governor Fashola stressed the need for the preservation of traditional institution, culture and values in the interest of the future generations.

Tinubu made the remarks yesterday at the official handing over of Oba’s palace, “Iga Idunganran”, Lagos Island as part of events to commemorate the 7th coronation anniversary of Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu I.

Among the dignitaries at the event were former military administrator of Lagos State, Brigadier Mobolaji Johnson; the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona; Oba Olateru Olagbegi, Olowo of Owo; Oba Ojora of Lagos; Alara of Ilara; former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Bola Ajibola; Alhaji Femi Okunnu; Senator Ganiyu Solomon and representative of Alake of Egba land, Alhaji Lateef Adegbite.

Tinubu made the declaration which elicited applause from the dignitaries and other guests at the occasion.

Commending Fashola for achieving the dream of building a befitting and modern palace for the Oba of Lagos, Tinubu described the incumbent governor as an achiever and a performing governor that deserved everyone’s support and cooperation in taking Lagos to higher heights.

The immediate past governor noted that the realisation of the new Oba’s palace was an evidence of Fashola’s dedication to duties and beliefe in shared vision of the past governors who had in one way or the other contributed to the upliftment of the palace into a modern building,

He said when the current democracy started in 1999, Lagos was in total bankruptcy but due to endurance of all, “Lagos has become what it is today and it will only get better with the type of Fashola in administartion.”

Okunnu, Oba Adetona, Olagbegi all spoke glowingly of Fashola’s administration and for making the building a reality in their own life time.

Fashola acknowledges Tinubu’s efforts

The governor in his brief comments, acknowledged the efforts and support of his predecessor Tinubu, who he said initiated the move to build the new palace.

“What we are here to commemorate is the dream that has been for long as successive military administrators and governors have contributed in no small means to the palace renewal with Tinubu administration being most impactful. Also, it was not just a government project but a project pursued with passion by Oba Akiolu.”

While stressing that everyone has a role to play in preserving their heritage, Fashola disclosed plans by his administration to bring in experts to work out ways of fully preserving the history of Lagos State.

“We will continue to ensure the renewal of Oba’s and chiefs’ palaces in the state. Already, some palaces are at different stages of completion. I feel humbled and delighted to have contributed in one way or the other to the preservation of our traditional institution,” Fashola said.

The race for the Vice-President’s position heated up yesterday, even as arrangements were made to lay the body of the former president to rest.PHOTO: NUHU RIBADU

It emerged yesterday that several groups used Mr. Yar’Adua’s burial as a forum to lobby and express interest in the job. Some of the groups who have started lobbying include the PDP, the northern political group, Arewa political forum, and the family of the deceased former president.

As many as 20 names were bandied about yesterday in the nation’s capital, and all the groups have drawn up shortlists which they will submit to the president.

Theophilus Danjuma, Yayale Ahmed, and Nuhu Ribadu have emerged as early favourites to be appointed vice president as early as next week. Other names that were rumoured were Aminu Masari, Nasir El-Rufai, Aliyu Gusau, Adamu Aliero, Bukola Saraki, and Isa Yuguda.

Theophilus Danjuma, a Christian northerner, would be a surprise choice, given that he prefers to be more of a kingmaker. He has certainly earned the president’s trust after he was named chair of the presidential advisory board.

Yayale Ahmed, the secretary general of the federation, has played a pivotal role in the transition of power to Goodluck Jonathan. He would be seen as a safe pair of hands to steady the ship over the next twelve months.

During Yar’Adua’s three month visit to Saudi, Yayale largely handled the administration of state affairs in the late president’s absence.

Nuhu Ribadu would be a populist choice and NEXT has exclusively reported that he was already earmarked for a role in Jonathan’s administration.

The intention had been to appoint him as a special adviser on anti-corruption, but the dynamics of power have changed in the past 48 hours. Widely seen as an incorruptible individual, his presence in the vice-president’s position would considerably raise the nation’s profile internationally. Furthermore, he would no longer have the stigma of a court case hanging over him, as the federal government officially withdrew all charges against him a few days ago.

The recently returned Nasir El-Rufai would also be a widely accepted pick. Unlike Ribadu however, he must still contend with charges brought against him by the EFCC if he is to realistically stand a chance. The former FCT minister has remained coy about his political ambitions over the next year, but has firmly stated that he would return in some capacity.

Aliyu Gusau has been more overt about his intentions for higher office, but he lost out to Yar’Adua in 2007 after contesting for president. He was surprisingly appointed National Security Adviser by Jonathan in February, and many saw that as a stepping stone to the vice presidency, and to something ultimately higher. At 68, Mr. Gusau is a shrewd politician and would fit in to the role with aplomb.

The Yar’Adua family is believed to have nominated the Bauchi state governor, Isa Yuguda, but his chances are not believed to be particularly good.

The former speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Masari, is a dark horse in the race, but certainly has the credentials to be considered. Another Obasonjo confidante, Mr. Masari has been a very vocal champion of electoral reform, a key policy in Jonathan’s fledgling administration. A Katsina State indigene, he is one of the suspended members of the PDP reform forum and had a poor relationship with Yar’Adua.

Mr.Saraki, a member of the Governors’ Forum, has long harboured ambitions for the presidency and this may be an opportunity for him to fulfil his ambition. The Kwara State governor has done some noteworthy things during his tenure, but Mr. Jonathan will be wary of the power that the Governors’ Forum wields.

A renowned female musician, Onyeka Onwenu, has urged the president, Goodluck Jonathan to consider the choice of a woman as the country’s next vice president.

Speaking at the Nige .ria Youth Summit, organised by the World Igbo Youth Assembly at the Nigeria Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Lagos at the weekend, she said the mistake of relegating women to the background, which the older generation made should not be repeated.

“Nige.rian women are strong, brilliant, committed. Nig.eria will get nowhere if we keep the woman down or put them somewhere. It is about time that we get women into the political process. Give us a chance. We are talking about having a vice president, so bring a woman to be the vice president. When there is ministerial appointment, make it at least 30 per cent women.”

She also said it was unfortunate that people tend to focus on the misdeeds of a few women to say the rest are incapable of leading the country.

“If Nigerians are claiming that 30 per cent of women have disappointed, then 90 per cent of men have disappointed,” she said.

“So, what do we do with the men? Get rid of all of them? I think that is even a question that shouldn’t come up. Majority of the women we have in government today and even in the past has given a good account of themselves.”

She, however, said N.igeri.a cannot succeed without women’s participation in national politics.

A former vice president of N.ige.ria, Alex Ekwueme, said despite the contribution of N.ige.rian heroes to the development of the country, the nation is still struggling to establish a truly federal structure that it claims to be.

He joined other speakers to say since past leaders were products of opportunities, the youth should be given fresh opportunities to contribute their own quota to the development of the country.

Yar’ Adua’s lesson

Also at the event, a former presidential aspirant and leader of the Mega Party, Pat Utomi said the death of the former president, Umar Yar’Adua was a lesson to others in positions of leadership.

“He could have made a great difference in this life to N.igeri.a and the people close to him. However the important thing is the lesson we draw from his life and the challenges of his death,” Mr. Utomi said. “One of the lessons learnt is about health care. His life put to us how poor the health care system is in our country and how much we need to do something about it. This is the basic need of our people and is fundamental to progress. We must look at how our health care system works, how our educational system works and if we get them right, we will get most other things right.

He cited the example of how an American president, Abraham Lincoln set up a presidential team called ‘a team of equal’ to work with him and advised that “as President Jonathan goes forward, he must be a man of courage and had to work with the right kind of people. N.igeri.an people are notorious for working with people who are inferior to them because they are afraid.”

A balancing act says Judge .An Eye for An Eye.

The court heard that trouble started when Ajikere, his brother and two girls boarded an unpainted taxi cab operated by Fabiyi, who was in plainclothes. The group had to alight from the cab following disagreement on the fare charged by the driver.

Fabiyi was angered by the group’s decision to abandon his taxi in preference for another and made his resentment known to the group, following an exchange of uncomplimentary words between both parties.

Bent on getting his pound of flesh, Fabiyi trailed the group to a mobile police check-point close to a five-star hotel along GRA and hurriedly lied to the policemen that the occupants of the other cab were criminals and should be dealt with.

Testifying at the trial, the younger brother of murdered Ajikere said the group was ordered out of the cab and frog-jumped, beaten black and blue and ordered to lay face-down on the tarred road. This was even as the policemen refused to listen to their own side of the story.

Unable to bear the torture any longer, he said, Ajikere tried to stand up and was shot at point-blank range by Cpl. Aminu. His life could not be saved as he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital that said Ajikere died of excessive bleeding.

Delivering judgment after sentencing the men to death by hanging, Monday, Justice Boma Diepreyi said the sentence would serve as a deterrent to other uniformed men “whose stock-in-trade is to kill innocent citizens under the guise of accidental discharge.”

Diepreyi said it would be unfair to take the plea of both Fabiyi and Aminu for mercy, adding: “In as much as I sympathize with them, there is the blood of the young Nnamdi Ajikere, the deceased 20 year-old final year student of University of Port Harcourt crying for vengeance.

“Justice is a balancing act and the only way to a balanced justice in this case is to make the accused persons face the consequences of their reckless act and hope that this will serve as a deterrent to those who may want to emulate their terrible example.”
