I AM HOT!

n1598253102_1868%5B1%5D.jpg
Yes I am hot! Not because of my clothes, my shoes, my car or even myintellectual prowess. But I am hot! The hot weather condition in Lagoshas brought many Lagosians like me to the point where we are nowdesperately begging our creator for rain not minding that our roadswill be flooded, fares of buses will be hiked and prices of umbrellaswill be hiked. Thanks to the administration of Mr. Babatunde Fashola,Governor of Lagos State; the effect of the rain may not exactly be thatbad flood wise for Lagosians. But we are still hot. The scorching sunthat smiles mercilessly on us as we go about our businesses and piercespainfully through our skins has made toilet rolls and handkerchiefsmust have accessories. The other day I went out without a handkerchiefand boy, I felt like I had committed a great life error!

What I find frustrating is that after all the stress of the day; I goback to darkness, you know what I mean, even after a cold bath, I’musually still unable to sleep and I spend the entire night awake in aforceful vigil, and I sing lullabies to drive myself to sleep. Nothanks to PHCN, I’m learning the power of staying awake so when Ibecome a mum, staying awake won’t be that hard. Up NEPA! Or rather, UpPHCN! I smile thanking God power has been restored, I curse under mybreath, though glad for the breeze and before I reach for the fan, power is gone again! Yes, the message is gotten; I Never Expect PowerAlways and I am seriously listening to the plea of PHCN to Please HoldMy Candles at Night.

I know I am not alone in this situation. Many people are tired, tiredfrom sleeplessness, and tired of the unfulfilled promises of thegovernment to provide constant power for Nigerians. What many findappalling is perhaps that electricity is the number one agenda on theadministration’s seven pointless agenda. What is even more disturbingis that not one of the agenda has been met.

If nature has not been kind to us, we at least should enjoy man madeelectric stability. For a nation at 50, the current power situation canbe best described as shameful. When the Federal Government in December2009 promised to deliver on 6,000 MW of electricity and 10,000MW byMarch 2010, only a few people believed them. And they were justifiedbecause the FG reneged on their promise. Media reports recently statedthat the national generation had dropped to 2,400MW from the dismissalpeak of 3,700 last December and 2,700MW some weeks ago. My advice?Tighten your “sokoto”.

The unfortunate thing is that the masses are the ones at the receivingend of this disturbing trend. Small scale business owners who barelymake enough profit now have to channel their little resources to buyinga generating set and of course fuel to power them. Even bigorganisations are not left out as many run their activities only onplants which of course make their services very expensive. Sometimeago, Rev. Sam Adeyemi of Daystar Christian Centre revealed that theChurch spends well over #50million on fuel alone every year. This moneycan of course be channelled into one of its programmes or even used togive scholarships to indigent students. The Church as part of itssocial responsibility even went ahead to stage a walk for light titled“Let There Be Light!”.

Part of the negative effect of this situation is evident around us. Onecan barely walk the streets without being disturbed with the noise ofgenerating sets that have become a norm in every home. Apart from thenoise, the pollution it generates also puts our health at a big risk. It’s so bad that most houses now have two generating sets, one for theday and the other for the night. Even the rich are not spared thefinancial strains of power failure. A closer look around you and youwill discover not many rich people can provide 24 hours electricity fortheir homes, no thanks to the fluctuating price of fuel and itsfrequent scarcity.

Of recent the government again in its characteristic way gave yetanother promise that 10,000MW of electricity will be supplied toNigerians by June. Simply put, Nigerians do not believe them becauseour government overtime have shown that they are not honest tothemselves much less the people they govern. Their repeated acts oflack of integrity has stripped them of every iota of respect theydeserve.

It is high time that a new workable strategy is adopted to bring the PHCN out of its comatose state.

In a recent interview, Jay Z dispelled accusations of his connection with the occult, Free Mansons. He believes in God but doesn’t buy into religious diferrences. He said:

“I don’t know where it started. I don’t know where it came from. I really think it’s really silly. For the record, I of course believe in God, but I believe in one God. If people must know my religious beliefs, I believe in one God. I don’t believe in religion. I don’t believe in Christians or Muslims. I think all that separates people. I think it’s one God. I think it’s all the same God, and I don’t believe in Hell.

“Am I a part of some sect or cult? That sounds stupid to me. It’s ignorant to even say, and I guess that’ll be the last time I address that. It’s ignorant to me”.

MNET to Broadcast Pornography !

It started as a rumour. It is confirmed that MultiChoice is considering broadcasting pornography and the possibility of creating new sex channels on DStv’s satellite pay-TV service. “MultiChoice has been inundated with requests for adult content on DStv over the past few months,” Jackie Rakitla, General Manager of corporate affairs at MultiChoice, told Die Burger on Tuesday. “At this stage we’re merely doing research to determine the extent ofinterest in adult content, and we’re looking at the feasibility ofimplementing such a service.” MultiChoice is using e-mails formarket research purposes to test the interest in various broadcastingoptions, such as the broadcasting of “mixed pornography” (hardcore pornbetween 21:00 and 05:00 and soft porn between 05:00 and 21:00),hardcore porn 24 hours per day, or soft porn 24 hours per day on DStvbut Jackie said that a final decision has not yet been made on whetherMultiChoice will introduce an adult content service..

What do you think?

SOUTH AFRICA. In reaction to plans by MNET to add a porn channel to their bonquet, Spokesman for the Department of Home affair has descried it as ‘irresponsible’ .“We don’t want a society where pornography is readily available to children”, Spokeman Bayanda Mzoneli was reported to have said. MNET began considering the channel after anumber of request by some subscribers. However, The concern has beenprotecting children from pornography.

The Deputy Minister of Home AffairsMalusi Gigaba also added his voice as he said a “clear relationship”existed between pornography and the abuse of women and children.

“If launched, MultiChoice will ensure all the necessary safeguards are in place to prevent young viewers from accessing content of anadult nature,” MultiChoice’s general manager of corporate affairsJackie Rakitla said.

There are also indications that the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa would not be authorising the channel. Fingersstay crossed.

Nine year old Naija Twins set british record

Nigerian-born nine-year-old twins yesterday became the youngest pupils to be admitted to a secondary school in Britain, timesonline.co.uk has reported.15562306.jpg
Paula and Peter Imafidon had already broken world records when they passed A/AS-level mathematics papers at the age of 7. Yesterday, the twins joined hundreds of thousands of other families across the country to find out which secondary school they would attend, despite being two years younger than most of their counterparts.

Peter and Paula, from Waltham Forest, northeast London, attend a normal State primary school but have received provisional offers from more than 12 leading secondary schools.

The so-called “wonder twins”, who come from a family of high achievers, set two world records when they passed A/AS-level maths papers. They became the youngest candidates to pass A-level maths and were also the youngest school pupils to do so, as the previous record holders had been taught at home, the website reported.

A year later they took and passed the University of Cambridge’s Advanced Mathematics (FAM) paper, becoming the youngest students to pass the rigorous examinations.

Chris Imafidon, their father, said that the twins would cope well with secondary school despite their age. “We’re delighted with the progress they have made,” he said. “Because they are twins they are always able to help and support each other.”

Peter and Paula’s sister Samantha, 12, passed her maths and statistics GSCEs at the age of 6, as did the twins. Their eldest sister, Anne-Marie, 20, holds the world record for being the youngest girl to pass A-level computing, at 13. She received a government scholarship to study at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Another sister, Christiana, 17, was the youngest schoolgirl to study at undergraduate level in any British university, at the age of 11.15562307.jpg

Mr Imafidon said that all of the children had taken part in the Excellence in Education programme, which helps disadvantaged families, and their achievements were due to being nurtured rather than natural "genius".

“Every child is a genius. Once you identify the talent of a child and put them in the environment that will nurture that talent then the sky is the limit," he said.

Peter has ambitions to become Prime Minister of UK while his sister wants to be a maths teacher. Mr Imafidon said he was confident that they would achieve their goals.

All does not seem to be well between the Nollywood screen diva, Bukky Wright and Fathia Balogun.

Both women are divorcees and perceived to be doing well in the movie industry of the Yoruba genre. we can also confirm that the 2 of them have penchant for running after married men for social economic security, which is the reason why they have perpetually remain single parents with many children.

fathia.png

Fathia Balogun

Our checks revealed that Fathia and Bukky are among the most sort-after actresses in Yoruba movie industry. Aside acting, they have both excelled in other endeavors. Years back, these two maintained a cordial relationship, especially, during the last election where Bukky Wright campaigned for the present Governor of Lagos State. The only actress this mother of 2 invited to join her in the project was Fathia Balogun and a lot of people envied their relationship. We gathered that few months after the election, the two Nollywood actresses started drifting apart, as most of their colleagues had already predicted. The story in town is that these two actresses are no longer on talking terms and they avoid each other like plaque but nobody can figure out the real cause of this cold war between these screen divas. A source confirmed that there is also a rift which borders on superiority between them and that there can never be two captains in the same ship, and also that Fathia Balogun chose her friends and not the other way round and due to her no-nonsense attitude, she can’t maintain a cordial relationship with Bukky Wright.

bukky.png

Bukky Wright

Meanwhile, it was gathered that Bukky Wright on her own is striving hard to stand out in everything and among her colleagues. She is equally a no-nonsense person and this has made things rather difficult for both of them. Also the envy and jealousy which has taken over the movie industry is also one of the factors why a lot of Nollywood actresses prefer to keep to themselves and make friends with people who are not in the entertainment industry as they are sure their secrets will be safe with such a person. Apart from the general reason these stars are not close, there is also the issue that Yoruba movie stars are believe to always want to know the source of each other’s success, and some even go as far as getting close to that same person in question and this at the end of the day causes misunderstanding among these stars. But this according to painstaking investigations is not the reason these two Nollywood actresses avoid each other.

We can however, disclose that the real issue for the unhealthy rivalry between them is that Fathia Balogun has been engaging in movie business with Corporate Picture boss, Rasaq Abdullahi, for years, as his (Corporate Picture) company sells her movies and Fathia also coordinates some movies and produce by this same marketer, and she has equally done business with a lot of other Nollywood stars in the industry, but lately, Bukky Wright has equally maintained a cordial relationship with the same marketer. Ever since he sold “Omotara Johnson”which was produced by Bukky Wright, people are beginning to feel, there is more to this sudden relationship and have seen it as an attempt by Bukky Wright to hi-jack corporate picture boss from Fathia. Also Fathia is said to be equally uncomfortable with the sudden relationship, this is said to be one of the reasons these two celebrities avoid each other like a plaque. Besides further checks have it that both are secret lovers to the successful movie marketer, and it was also gathered that the man at the centre of the storm has been satisfying them well both in cash and in kind.

It is on record that Fathia, controversially divorced her husband owing to the love affairsbetween him and the corporate picture boss. His estranged husband is also a popular actor, in the movie industry, who is know and addressed as Saheed Balogun
We gathered that Fathia had granted so many interview with the press where she vowed never to return to Saidi's life and that she's through with marriage. Industry source confirmed to that Bukky Wright initiated Fathia into lesbianism, and when the duo realised that same man was also going to bed with them, that grossly contributed to the impasse between them.

For Bukky Wright she cannot be particularly traced to any man as her husband despite the media overkill she got in the recent time that she remarried. Investigations have it that she can do anything for money as she is persistently linked with a Lagos based socialite and drug baron, Bolaji Saheed. It was disclosed that Bukky Wright had vowed that nothing on earth would make them break even has she moved into Bolaji’s residence in Magodo GRA, she is also most times, seen cruising around town in her guy's latest Lincoln Navigator Jeep which he bought some days after they broke up the last time until she later broke up with him when Bolaji accused him of promiscuity and lesbianism. Thereafter she hooked up with Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel. Gbenga Daniel gathered that he battered his First Lady mercilessly when the poor woman accused His Excellency of deep romance with Bukky Wright. The common saying in the lips of many now is that most Nollywood stars whether male or female are not responsible, their movies though may help to preach and teach morals in the society but they themselves unfortunately are not practising what they preach. Undoubtedly this assertion is not far from truth, as cases of immorality/promiscuity in the Nollywood has become one too many.

The Governor’s Forum, in a meeting with Acting President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday, said it does not want President Umaru Yar’Adua to resign.

jpeg&STREAMOID=nh7GGjWZEwa$QFAvE0HZuC6SYeqqxXXqBcOgKOfTXxTNa4$b_KVczQCpbUyxVwB_nW_PgxgftuECOcfJwS6Jtlp$r8Fy$6AAZ9zyPuHJ25T7a9GKDSxsGxtpmxP0VAUyHL6IDcZHtmM2t7xO$FHdJG95dFi6y2Uma3vSsvPpVyo-

The meeting, which held at the Aguda House, the residence of the Acting President, lasted for almost two hours, with all 36 state governors in attendance.

As they trooped into Mr Jonathan’s residence from the venue of an earlier meeting of the forum, their faces were bright and the banters were light, indicating that all was well. But when the governors left after their meeting with Mr Jonathan, they all looked grim, and a source close to one of the governors said the meeting had not been devoid of argument.

While briefing newsmen after the closed door meeting, the Akwa Ibom State governor, Godswill Akpabio, said the group did not discuss the hundred days of Mr Yar’adua’s absence and that the issue of his resignation was also not touched upon.

He said: “We did not discuss that. We noted that the president has returned to the country and we noted the need for him to recuperate and get better soon, before he can think of assuming duty. For us the issue of his resignation is not an option for now. For us what is important is for us to be compassionate, to be sympathetic and to realise that anybody, no matter highly placed, even if you are a Christian and you are a Pope can get ill. Thank God he is back now and he is recuperating and we are satisfied that recovery is on the way. We are praying for him.”

Governor of Kwara State and head of the Forum, Bukola Saraki also said “We congratulated the Acting President towards stabilizing the polity of the country at the moment and we also in return pledged our support to the Acting President during this trying time. We encouraged him and said he is doing a good job and he has the full support of the governor’s forum in this exercise.”

Akunyili went overboard

Mr Saraki said Mr Jonathan gave reasons why he set up the presidential advisory council. He, “educated us on a number of issues, for example the advisory council that was set up and the reason behind it and other things,” Mr Saraki said. “By and large, we emphasized the need for the government to work very hard to ensure that we all play our role to provide leadership at this crucial time and to talk to members of government to ensure that the comments made are well guided. At the end of the day we acknowledged what he is doing and we appreciated it and the 36 governors will continue to support the Acting President for this country to move forward.

“We have expressed that we are happy to see that the president is back in the country, we have also said that we should separate the two issues. The return of the president to the country is an indication that there is progress in his recovery process and that does not deviate at all from any decision we took as a forum, where we all decided that a political solution to provide a resolution for Mr. Vice President to act as the Acting president and that is still the position.

Mr. Vice President acting as the president is still running this country and we are wishing the president speedy recovery. Our resolution was taken not because Mr. President was out of the country, but because he was ill and that has not changed.”

Bayelsa State governor, Timipre Sylva however condemned the public statements making the rounds by public office holders. He picked issues with Information Minister, Dora Akunyili’s whom he said “went overboard” with her statements.

Worried by the extra-judicial killings allegedly carried out by officers of the Nigeria Police during the Boko Haram crisis, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Adetokunbo Kayode, has summoned the Inspector General of Police and the police leadership to discuss the issue.

Mr. Kayode said, over the past few weeks, documentary and photographic evidence of extra-judicial killings by Nigeria’s police has dominated national and international discourse.

“Specifically, I am refereeing to the Aljazeera documentary on the Boko Haram unrest and Amnesty International’s report alleging extra-judicial killings by the Nigerian Police,” he said.

The Minister, who briefed the press after his meeting with the National Committee on Torture, said he decided to convene the meeting because of the growing unease about Nigeria’s commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights, and specifically to the government’s position on torture and extra-judicial killings.

He instructed the committee to put administrative measures in place to investigate the documentary on the killings, stating that those who appear on the video clip would be identified and made to face the wrath of the law.

He said the visuals undermine our image as a nation of laws that is committed to the human rights provisions in its constitution as well as its international human rights obligations.

“A democracy as resilient as ours must reject the false choice between our security and fundamental freedoms and this is why we cannot tolerate impunity disguised under the cloak of security or any other guise,” he said.

201029133124418734_3.jpg

Furthermore, he said policemen who were involved in the alleged killings are now facing orderly room trial and will be brought to justice.

“Over 600 people, including police officers, have been indicted by the investigating committee set up by the Federal Government to investigate the Boko Haram incident,” he said.

Ignored crimes

Mr. Kayode also said the impression is that extra-judicial execution and other unlawful killings in Nigeria are widespread and go largely uninvestigated and unpunished.PHOTO:Baba Fugu Mohammed's family says he was among those killed

“My judgment on this is a matter of record. In one of my very first speeches as the Attorney General (of the Federation) and Minister of Justice of the Federation, I did state categorically that the Federal Government of Nigeria unequivocally condemns all extra-judicial executions and other unlawful killings,” he said. “Going forward, it is my strong believe that the Federal Government of Nigeria has a solemn duty to criminalise torture and make extra-judicial executions punishable by sanctions commensurate with the gravity of the practice. This is an extraordinarily important responsibility of the office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, and it is one that will be carried out assertively irrespective of any political concern.”

excerpts :

Nigerian police and military units carried out extra-judicial killings last year in the aftermath of clashes with members of a Muslim group in the north of the country, footage obtained by Al Jazeera appears to confirm.

An estimated 1,000 people were killed as Nigerian government forces fought Boko Haram in Borno, Yobe, Kano and Bauchi states in July and August of 2009.

But the footage obtained by Al Jazeera shows that many of the deaths occurred only after the fighting was over.

Elements of the security forces staged a follow-up operation in which house-to-house searches were conducted and individuals were apparently selected at random and taken to a police station.

'Shoot him in the chest'

20097292163679734_3.jpg

In the video, a number of unarmed men are seen being made to lie down in the road outside a building before they are shot.

As one man is brought out to face death, one of the officers can be heard urging his colleague to "shoot him in the chest not the head - I want his hat".

As the executions continue another man is told: "Sit properly we want to take your picture."

The shootings continue as a crowd gathers further up the street in front of the police station.

Voices can be heard saying: "No mercy, no mercy."

Two officers seen in the video can be clearly identified by the name tags on their chests.

The family of Baba Fugu Mohammed, a respected community leader, told Al Jazeera that he was among those put to death outside the police station.

"He was killed, he was killed, that's what we believe. He was shot by the police," one relative said.

Fugu Mohammed was the father-in-law of Mohammed Yusuf, the Boko Haram leader whose group had battled the police, but the two had become estranged.

His family said that he had come to help police restore order, but was shot.

A Federal High Court in Ekiti has sentenced a 70-year-old man to five years in jail for being in possession of 230 kg of marijuana.

Dominic Fabunmi, a native of Agbado Ekiti, was arrested last year by officers of the Ekiti State command of the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

jpeg&STREAMOID=_vyf5$tihztZsU6FYK$Lcy6SYeqqxXXqBcOgKOfTXxTi9vmCMFO3XM2IySesS0I8nW_PgxgftuECOcfJwS6Jtlp$r8Fy$6AAZ9zyPuHJ25T7a9GKDSxsGxtpmxP0VAUyHL6IDcZHtmM2t7xO$FHdJG95dFi6y2Uma3vSsvPpVyo-

In its charge, the NDLEA said Mr. Fabunmi cultivates cannabis farms usually in Government Reserved Forests and and sells same to his network of clients in the Lagos and South-South areas of the country.

“He has been in the business for long and he stores his products in his house without fear of retribution from the law,” the command says.

Mr. Fabunmi was paraded in public shortly after his arrest alongside his colleagues, who also bagged various jail terms.

The Ekiti State Commander of NDLEA , Prince Benjamin Ikani, said the state is fast becoming a preferred haven for Indian Hemp dealers. He said his agency made the largest drug seizure ever in the history of the agency in the state last year.

“It was 82 tons of cannabis, which was stored in a one-storey house in 5,600 bags. It took a 24 -tyre trailer 7 hours to evacuate,” Mr. Ikani said.

External barons

Mr. Ikani said most of the barons sponsor the cultivation of the weeds from outside the state.

“Because of the fertile nature of Ekiti land and the passiveness and good naturedness of the people, these criminals always have their way. They take advantage of the people and the soil to flourish their trade. Mind you, it only takes three months for the weeds to germinate. So they quickly harvest their products before the land owners catch them in their acts and move them to Lagos or the South-South to feed their clients,” he said.

He also added that his agency is involved in the rehabilitation of at least 36 students of various higher institutions in the state, especially at the state-owned University of Ado -Ekiti (UNAD).

Barely two months after it laid off about 1400 members of staff, Intercontinental Bank Plc, one of the rescued banks, has again laid off another 1200, bringing the total number of sacked staff to almost 3000 in three months.jpeg&STREAMOID=GWmmXqnO9YNd7wUzQ2PLDi6SYeqqxXXqBcOgKOfTXxTwXDRzz6H$YJML1se3hNh2nW_PgxgftuECOcfJwS6Jtlp$r8Fy$6AAZ9zyPuHJ25T7a9GKDSxsGxtpmxP0VAUyHL6IDcZHtmM2t7xO$FHdJG95dFi6y2Uma3vSsvPpVyo-

The bank, according to a statement issued yesterday, said the downsizing of its Support Staff cadre by 1182 is part of its repositioning exercise.

“Intercontinental Bank has announced the down-sizing of the Support Staff cadre by 1182 as part of the repositioning exercise in the Bank. The disengagement exercise, which took place yesterday, marks the conclusion of the right-sizing exercise embarked upon by the Bank last December,” the bank statement said.

The bank also said the exercise was carried out after due consultation with the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE), and the local chapter of NUBIFIE, where the terms of disengagement were agreed upon.

The bank claims that the exercise was done based on clearly-defined criteria agreed by the Union and the bank, which will see the affected staff leaving with an enhanced severance package approved by the Board of Directors of the bank and in line with the collective agreement with NUBIFIE.

“Each of the affected staff will have access to three months free Medicare under the existing Health Insurance Scheme (HIS),” the statement said.

In December 2009, the bank eased out about 1339 members of its staff as part of its restructuring exercise.

Shareholders’ Interest

The bank last year launched a three-phased “Project Transformation” strategy aimed at stabilising, rebuilding and consolidating the bank for greater efficiency and profitability.

“The exercise, which is part of the strategic plans to reposition the bank to profitability level, affected Senior Manager to Executive Trainee Grades. This exercise was carried out with due consideration of a number of assessment criteria,” it said.

Hassan Adeleke, the National President of NUBIFE said the union is aware of the layoff. “It is true that we were notified. The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) is aware, NUBIFIE is aware and even ASSBIFI is aware. We had a dialogue with them and we were able to win what I think is right at this point. By this, we can follow up the lay off process. That they informed bank unions means they have followed due process. If there is any fallout of our agreement, we would be able to take it up with them,” he said.

The bank also faulted a story that it has concluded plans with Standard Bank for the acquisition of stakes in Intercontinental Bank.

Intercontinental Bank’s Group Managing Director, Mahmoud Lai Alabi, said although the bank is in the process of discussion with all those who have indicated interest in the bank, including Standard Bank, “no detailed discussion or negotiations have even commenced, not to talk of allotment of shares.”

The picture is gory and very disturbing! But it is a true representation of the state of security in Nigeria , where the value for human life means nothing. Three years after Yar’Adua announced his seven point agenda, Huhuonline.com can disclose that not a single point in the array of agendas has been realized. However, his wife Hajia Turai, recently sneaked in the eight agenda, tagged “deceive the citizens at all cost”. This she has successfully implemented, at least for the past ninety six days. As the battle for supremacy rages on the within the Nigerian polity, the security of lives and properties of its citizens takes a back seat.

Picture: On this faithful morning, passengers traveling on the Lagos-Benin road were stopped by men in police uniform for routine stop and search, but unknown to them the supposed security agents were armed robbers. Subsequently the armed robber hijacked the bus to this path, demanded money from the passengers and raped the women as much as they could. As if this was not enough, those who did not have money to give, were asked to lay face down. The driver at gun point was then asked to run over them several times.

President Barack Obama “is in excellent health” and likely to remain able to carry out his duties for the rest of his term, his doctor said on Sunday after completing Obama’s first routine medical checkup since he assumed office.

jpeg&STREAMOID=H6SOplCF8TZ6CQ_8oy3ZIC6SYeqqxXXqBcOgKOfTXxRc2Db1fau1SMRJ$3MJgCxpwLkdkNm4NaK1iliY4aRX7GEabxkeoo57KN3LcI4Be79xyJSXHeyn6i9C8rc3E0xoX_kuXYWCUJRqviwH8FNPwULIcdFM9zupuYHBJc2ySZk-

But Obama, 48, continues to struggle to stop his 30-year smoking habit and needs to modify his diet, said Dr. Jeffrey Kuhlman, a Navy captain who led the medical team that performed Obama’s physical.

The examination also found that Obama’s cholesterol count has risen to borderline high levels since his last publicly released medical records, though his pulse rate and blood pressure remain normal.

Obama exercises at least six mornings a week and plays basketball and golf. But the president has chronic tendinitis in his left knee area, occasionally takes a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug for that condition and needs a modified exercise regimen, including a lower leg muscle strengthening program, Kuhlman’s report said.

Obama’s cholesterol increase comes at a time when his wife, Michelle, has started a program to fight childhood obesity.

Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, said the increase was attributed to the president’s diet. While Obama often eats healthful meals prepared by the family’s chef, Sam Kass, he also takes advantage of around-the-clock food available to him during long workdays at the White House, Gibbs said.

“I think it’s a few more burgers and a few more desserts over the past year,” he said.

Cholesterol measurements can vary among laboratories.

Presumably, Obama’s cholesterol has been tested at other times. But the findings and the laboratories that performed the tests are not publicly known.

So it is possible that Obama’s cholesterol has fluctuated over recent years and represents such a variation.

Doctors see a rise in cholesterol like Obama’s occasionally, said Dr. Martin L. Kahn, a professor of cardiology at New York University who is not connected with Obama’s case. “Usually that is a lever for the doctor to recommend more aggressive dietary changes and cigarette cessation to warn a patient, ‘Look what you are doing to yourself’,”’ Kahn said in an interview.

“Nutritionists tell us that a very little extra food each day adds up to a measurable amount at the end of a year,” Kahn said.

As for Obama’s smoking, Gibbs said the president had tried to quit, but had “admitted lapses.” It is not known how frequently Obama smokes, or what the figure is for his total “pack years,” a standard measure of a smoker’s risk for diseases like lung cancer.

Gibbs referred reporters to the president’s own words from last June, when he was asked about his smoking addiction while signing a law aimed at keeping children from starting to smoke. The president noted that 90 per cent of smokers began on or before their 18th birthday.

“I know - I was one of those teenagers,” Obama said. “I know how difficult it can be to break this habit when it’s been with you for a long time.” He added: “I would say that I am 95 per cent cured, but there are times where I mess up.” Michelle Obama admonished him to quit smoking when he started his campaign in 2007, saying, “He couldn’t be a smoking president.” Obama chews nicotine gum to cut down on his smoking.

“Have I fallen off the wagon sometimes? Yes,” Obama said last June at a White House news conference. “Am I a daily smoker, a constant smoker? No.” Kahn said he might recommend an exercise stress test “as a baseline” for the future but would not do further procedures “unless he had a calamitous stress test.” Obama showed no evidence of heart disease from an electrocardiogram and a test known as an electron beam CT scan that looks for calcified areas in coronary arteries that may be evidence of coronary artery disease.

“The CT heart scan findings are somewhat reassuring” because if it were positive, “it would be a worry,” Kahn said.

Other standard blood tests showed no evidence of diabetes, heart and metabolic disease. They included triglycerides, 46; high density lipoprotein, 62; and low density lipoprotein (so-called bad cholesterol), 138. These can be compared to 44, 68 and 96 in 2007.

The president’s pulse rate of 56 and blood pressure of 105/62 are normal.

Kuhlman, who is physician to the president, chief White House physician and director of the White House medical unit, said that Obama agreed to release the results of his checkup, which took place at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.

While there, Obama visited 12 military service members receiving treatment and rehabilitation for injuries suffered in Iraq and Afghanistan. The White House declined a request to interview Kuhlman.

Another CT scan known as a virtual colonoscopy or CT-colongraphy showed no evidence of colon cancer. Gibbs said that no sedation was required during the test, so it was not necessary to invoke the 25th Amendment, which would have temporarily transferred power to Vice President Joe Biden. A previously undisclosed medical examination of Obama in July 2008 by a congressional doctor was not conducted for any specific issues, Gibbs said. It came one month before Obama formally accepted the Democratic presidential nomination.

A standard group of tests, including those for thyroid function, were normal. A PSA test for prostate cancer was normal: 0.70 compared with 0.6 in 2007.

Kuhlman recommended that Obama get his next routine checkup when he turns 50 in 2011.

One oddity of the report: Obama weighed 179.9 pounds with his shoes and workout attire on, which is not the usual way to measure a patient’s weight.

NKEM Akinsoto has written her way into limelight with her debut novel, A Heart to Mend, however, under a pseudo name, Myne Whitman. The writer and editor currently residing in Seattle, United States, is on a journey to seeing her stories in print. She aspires to see her work on big and small TV screens everywhere.

Giving reasons why she took up the name Myne Whitman, Nkem said she grew up during the 80s in Enugu, Nigeria. In an online interview, she wrote, “my earliest memories are of studying, reading everything I could lay my hands on, and then trying to play as much as I could. I have worked as a teacher, NGO consultant, banker, skate-hire attendant, researcher and Scottish government worker.

The young author said she started to write while still in primary school. “My writings then were about the kind of adventures the tomboy I was wished I had. When I started writing seriously later, I found my pen tilting to the romance genre. You can blame it on all the category romance novels I ran through in secondary school, and still read once in a while. The only difference was that I based all my stories in Nigeria, with local characters and continues to do so. However, I decided on a pseudonym and since I was writing in English, Myne Whitman was born.”

She describes herself as friendly, caring and fun loving. After a postgraduate degree and a few years in Edinburgh, Scotland, she now lives in the United States with her husband.

Myne Whitman is, however, a creation of her blogging. “I decided to start the Myne Whitman Writes blog because of the feedback I received from readers at my favourite online forum, Nigeria Village Square and from my writing group. I had a poetry blog on NVS and had been reading other blogs, but it never occurred to me to start blogging because most of the ones I read were personal blogs. Some of the members of my meet-up had blogs where they shared previews or excerpts of their work. They advised that I could start one to get more feedback on the story I was writing then, and know when it's ready for the market.”

How did she then create the niche as a writer? She replies, “most times, I’m very private until I feel I have established a rapport with the people I meet. So, I knew I could never start a personal blog. I used to read two writing blogs, which gave me an idea of what I wanted to do and they were by Favoured girl and Flourishing Florida. I’m happy I have been able to establish my blog as a story and writing site but it has just been luck. I salute all the naija blogsville members especially those who have stood the test of time and made it the community it is today.

“But horning my writing skills, I have taken some free online courses and workshops for Creative and Fiction Writing from the University of Utah, MIT, Open University UK and Suite 101. These courses are an on-going project. I am also a member of a Writing meet up group in my area, which includes traditionally/self-published authors and gifted writers/editors. The members were a great help in the course of writing A Heart to Mend.”

Thinking of her home country, she is not only looking for an inroad with student representatives in Nigerian universities, she thinks there is no better time to launch herself than the month of February. “This is just in time because the book will make perfect Valentine's Day gifts.”

The Nigerian author, last December, wrote a captivating novel that presents the gripping tale of a young woman finding her feet in the world and how her life intersects with that of the wealthy egoist she meets. This main story line runs through the subplots of a tear-soaked family reunion and high-powered company acquisitions.

1. What is your day-to-day makeup routine?

On a regular day, it would go this way: some concealer, face powder, then an eyebrow pencil, followed by a black eyeliner (or pencil), and lastly, some lip gloss (lightly-coloured mostly). Occasionally, I could use a few strokes of blusher.

2. What is your night-time look?

That depends on a lot of things, mood inclusive

3. What do you do to take care of your skin?

To take care of my skin, I try to drink lots of water. I also make sure I cleanse and moisturise at night. In addition to these, I try to take lots of fruits. 4. What are some makeup tips and tricks you've learned over the years?

US, UK, EU place visa ban on Yar'Adua's men *President's aides' names compiled by global anti-money laundering body *UK envoy, Jonathan in strategic closed door meeting
Written by Taiwo Adisa
Monday, March 1, 2010

TOP officials of Western powers, including the United States of America (USA), United Kingdom, (UK), Canada and the European Union (EU), have given clear indications to the Nigerian government that they are placing visa restrictions on aides of ailing President Umaru Yar'Adua, who are believed to be

orchestrating political confusion that could endanger Nigeria's democracy.

In separate representations to Acting President Goodluck Jonathan in the last one week, sources confirmed that the Western authorities have also compiled names of such "trouble makers" in the country and forwarded same to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the global anti-money laundering body, for the investigation of their alleged stupendous wealth.

Sources close to the administration confirmed to the Nigerian Tribune that while some of the Western governments made representation to the Nigerian authorities through their ambassadors in Nigeria, others actually sent special envoys.

It was gathered that a special envoy of the UK government actually met with the acting president behind closed doors on Saturday.

A source said that the delegation also included the UK Ambassador in Nigeria, Mr Bob Dewar, who led the team with a special message to the acting president.

Though the meeting was held behind closed doors, a source close to the government said that the discussions centred on how to stabilise the Nigerian democracy.

It was gathered that the UK government had, on its own, identified those described as 'trouble makers' in Nigeria, who are regarded as orchestrating political confusion in the country.

The acting president was told that, henceforth, such persons would be placed under scrutiny in the UK and that their names were being forwarded to the FATF.

It was gathered that while some of those involved have only earned salaries all their life, their offshore accounts are fatter than those of well known businessmen.

Sources said that there was the suspicion in the Western countries that some of those who have earned illicit funds could be willing tools and agents of terrorism.

It was also gathered that these Western governments were ready to seize assets of any of the targeted officials which could not be defended.

"There could be the likelihood of prosecutions at the end of the day but I guess they came early to inform the Nigerian authorities such that it will not be news to them when some Nigerians start facing serious times in the Western countries," a source said.

It was learnt that the Western countries are seriously seeking the intervention of FATF to isolate the channels by which the said officials moved huge sums from Nigeria in recent years.

"They decided to inform Nigeria early enough because they would require the cooperation of the Nigerian authorities," a source said.

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister, Mr. Gordon Brown, has written to Dr. Jonathan, expressing the support of his administration for the Nigerian leader and listing areas the two countries need to urgently collaborate.

The letter, dated February 26, 2010 and signed by the Prime Minister, stated the support of the UK's government to Jonathan's commitment to the fight against corruption and finding a lasting solution to the problems of the Niger Delta.

Brown welcomed the inaugural speech by Jonathan on February 9, stating that the UK was ready to continue to partner Nigeria on the path of progress.

Some of the priority areas the UK hoped Jonathan would concentrate on and further collaborate with the West included the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the Niger Delta, electoral reform, the fight against corruption and the fight against international terrorism.

The letter reads: "I am writing to congratulate you on taking up your new role as Acting President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

"As you know, we firmly believe that principles of abiding by the constitution, together with democratic values, non-violence and the rule of law are fundamental to resolving political and constitutional issues. I commend the efforts made by the Executive Council of the Federation, the National Assembly and the Executive to promote a peaceful and democratic solution to the recent uncertainty.

"The UK has long been a committed friend and partner of Nigeria and have continued to give strong and constructive support during the recent difficult weeks. I welcomed the commitments you made in your address to the nation and would strongly support you on the need for electoral reform and democra-tisation, tackling corruption and bringing peace and stability to the Niger Delta..

"We face joint challenges internationally, including in the fight against global terrorism. We remain committed to help you tackle poverty and make real progress towards the MDGs. I hope we can work together on these and other issues.

"I also look forward to working with you closely on the UN Security Council. We hope that you will be able to support strong UN action in response to Iran's failure to address international concerns over its nuclear programme and its breach of five UNSCRs.

"We remain committed to help you tackle poverty and make real progress towards the MDGs, in particular I hope we can work together to support the 1-Goal campaign and education for all in advance of the South African World Cup this year. I hope we can work together on these and other issues.

"We extend wishes for President Yar'Adua's recovery and I look forward to meeting you in the not too distant future.

Yours Sincerely,

Gordon Brown.

Jonathan to start sweeping changes

By Jide Ajani & Ben Agande

ABUJA— ACTING President Goodluck Jonathan is set to swing into action this week with the exercise of full presidential powers.

ACTING President Goodluck Jonathan

According to Aso Rock sources, he will embark on sweeping changes in the area of security lapses noticed in recent times, Federal Executive Council and electoral reforms hinged largely on the Justice Uwais electoral reforms panel’s report, the power situation and the post amnesty issues.

Meantime, the Federal Executive Council will at its meeting midweek receive the report of six man delegation it sent to Saudi Arabia to evaluate the state of health of the President before his sudden return on Wednesday morning. The report could not be considered last Wednesday because of the inability of the Council to meet, following the arrival of ailing President Umaru Yar’Adua.

Though Acting President Jonathan has been considered as slow in taking decisions, Vanguard gathered that he has been consulting with sections of the country to arrive at decisions that would stand the test of time. Vanguard, however, learnt yesterday that President Umaru Yar’Adua remains incommunicado and is yet to be seen.

Acting President Goodluck Jonathan is set to swing into action

Riot act to ministers

Even as the jostle for control of the Presidency between forces loyal to ailing President Umaru Yar’Adua on the one hand, and Acting President Goodluck Jonathan on the other continues, the Acting President has directed ministers to do their work without any form of distraction.

Vanguard can also reveal that the Acting President is set to dismantle remnants of what an Aso Rock Presidential Villa source described as “the vestiges of the old order”.

Investigations by Vanguard in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, last week suggested that Jonathan may be about to stamp his authority on the Presidency this week.

His confidence level, which a source described as being “buoyed by the growing support from different quarters of Nigeria’s elite,” is also growing in a manner as to suggest that Jonathan may have put the hassles of the last week behind him.

Ministers to be up and doing

Consequent upon the admonition from Acting President Jonathan that Ministers should go about their work with dedication and commitment, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Adetokunbo Kayode, SAN, has sent a memo to the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Maurice Iwu, requesting for the case files prepared against electoral offenders at the February 6 governorship elections in Anambra State.

Vanguard was informed that the memo to INEC was received by the Office of the Chairman of the commission last week.

Specifically, the Minister of Justice wanted INEC to furnish it with the list of offenders and their attached offences during the February 6 governorship elections.

Vanguard has also learnt that this, perhaps, “is the first time that electoral offenders would be specifically requested for by the Office of the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation for prosecution.

The source said: “This is a paradigm shift from what Nigerians were used to in times past and it also shows that the Acting President knows what he wants to do and achieve for Nigerians.”

Vanguard was made to understand that “INEC, on its part is also ready to furnish the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation with the needed information to prosecute the offenders.

“One of the steps already set in motion by INEC”, Vanguard was informed, “is the communication to the Office of the Inspector General of Police. INEC will go ahead with the Police Authorities to send the case file to the Office of the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation.”

Jonathan banks on public support

Vanguard has also learnt that Acting President Jonathan may be about to assert himself on the Presidency as he makes some moves this week.

Sources said that Jonathan was set to make some far-reaching changes in the cabinet last week before the unexpected arrival of Yar’Adua.

Speaking in separate interviews with Vanguard, Richard Akinjide, SAN, second republic Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, and Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, former president of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, said Jonathan should assert himself on the Presidency by mounting the chair designated for the President and Commander-in-Chief.

Akinjide said there was nothing wrong with Jonathan sitting on the chair, stressing: “It is very proper for him to sit on the chair because he has all the powers of the substantive holder of the office. There are no half measures in this thing. The President, whether substantive or acting, has all the powers of the holder of office.”

Agbakoba added his voice to the controversy surrounding the chair. He noted: “there can be no two presidents of Nigeria at any given time; there can be no two national anthems for Nigeria at any time, one for the President and the other for the Acting President. No

As it is, the transmission of letter from the President is a transmission of the presidential powers to Jonathan, simple and straight forward.

“There is only one insignia of office and it is on that chair. Once somebody is expected to discharge those powers, every other thing goes with it. The chair can not be vacant when you have an Acting President.”

Begins consultation for a possible cabinet shakeup

The Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has begun consultations with various power groups in the country for a possible shake-up in the cabinet to reposition his government, Vanguard has learnt in Abuja.

The cabinet change is as a result of the polarisation of members of the Executive Council of the Federation, following the long absence of President Umaru Yar’Adua from the country.

A highly placed source informed Vanguard that the contemplation for the change, which was expected shortly, is to halt the drift in governance and to relieve cabinet members whose continued presence in the council would engender negative feelings amongst their colleagues.

The absence of President Yar’Adua from office has sharply divided members of the Executive Council along the line of pro-Yar’Adua and pro-Goodluck Jonathan with only a few members seen to be neutral.

The redeployment of the former Attorney General of the Federation, Michael Aondoakaa to the Special Duties ministry is seen as a direct fall out of this division.

Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili in her interview with Sunday Vanguard, yesterday, referred to this division in council.

According to the source, the planned change in cabinet was not intended to punish or reward anybody but to reposition it for the task ahead especially on the critical areas of governance.

He said: “The consultation preceding the cabinet shake-up is to make everybody understands that the Acting President is not on a revenge mission. The most important thing is to ensure that those ministers whose continued presence would drag back this government are excused from the cabinet. It has nothing to do with their loyalty to the Acting President or not.

“Supporters of President Yar’Adua would be fully carried along in the assignment and the leadership of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, the National Assembly and other relevant power blocks would be informed and fully briefed by the Acting President before a final decision is announced to Nigerians.”

Vanguard gathered that a meeting of the caucus of the Peoples’ Democratic Party would be convened this week to afford the Acting President, an opportunity to brief members of the caucus and secure their consent before making the final changes.

“The changes would affect areas that are critical to the realization of mandate of this administration. The Acting President is keen on taking a decision that when the President recovers fully and is ready to continue in office, he (the Acting President) would be able to defend his decision to relieve some ministers of their appointments in the over all interest of the country” the source said.

Yar'Adua, has called on eminent Nigerians to prevail on Hajia Turai to release her son to her.

Similarly, the president's mother has vowed to hold her daughter in-law responsible if anything unwholesome happens to her son.

A source close to the family in Katsina disclosed that the president's mother has started making frantic efforts to meet with former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former military head of state, General Yakubu Gowon, as well as other eminent Nigerians, who were close to President Yar'Adua's late brother, General Sheu Musa Yar'Adua, to help appeal to the first lady to drop her recalcitrant attitude, and bring home the ailing Nigerian leader.

According to the source, Turai had locked the door of Aso Rock against the president's mother, thus preventing her from seeing her son. He added that the woman, who had become troubled since her son took ill, had sent emissaries to Ota Farm to meet Chief Obasanjo in order to make him see her plight and prevail on the first lady to change her mind.

The woman, according to the source, revealed that the health status of president Yar'Adua had always been a source of worry to her, noting that the president had been battling with health challenges, as he was afflicted with a certain skin disease at birth, adding that the president's illness, which has been given much media attention in recent times, could be cured locally.

She said Turai's hard stance on access to her husband had made things worse, as President Yar'Adua's health condition had suffered in the process.

The source said that President Yar'Adua's mother did not want her son disgraced from office, noting that it was better for him to die and be given full presidential honours, than being disgraced out of office.

It will be recalled that the president's mother, in the wake of the president's latest sickness, after he was flown to Saudi Arabia, had urged the first lady to leave her son alone and allow him to resign from office on the grounds of his ill health.

Ray C. Stedman in his book Understanding Man has analyzed the meaning of the names of the descendants in the line of Seth to Noah and gives the following explanation:.

"a way of escape [for man] is indicated again in a most fascinating way in this chapter by the meaning of the names listed. There is some difference among authorities as to the meaning of these names, depending upon the root from which they are judged to be taken. But one authority gives a most interesting sequence of meanings. The list begins with Seth, which means 'Appointed.' Enosh, his son, means 'Mortal;' and his son, Kenan, means 'Sorrow.' His son Mahalalel, means 'The Blessed God.' He named his boy Jared which means 'Came Down,' and his boy, Enoch, means 'Teaching.' Methuselah, as we saw, means 'His death shall bring;' Lamech means 'Strength,' and Noah, 'Comfort.' Now put that all together: :

God has Appointed that Mortal man shall Sorrow;
but The Blessed God, Came Down,
Teaching, that His Death Shall Bring,
Strength and Comfort.

"Is this book (Genesis) from God? God has given you and me a life to watch just as Methuselah's generation watched his. It is your own life. God has written "Methuselah" on each one of us. "His death shall bring it," or "When he dies, it will come." How far is it till the end of the world for you? When you die. That is the end of the world. That is the end of man's day. Is it fifty years from now, ten, tomorrow? Who knows? But at any moment, when he dies, it will come."
