12166295265?profile=originalPopular comedian, Francis Agoda (I go dye) has the intervention of veteran comedian, Ali Baba to thank for saving his life on Tuesday as military men on guard at the Warri township stadium venue of Uduaghan re-run campaign almost beat life out of him and his compatriot, Ogus Baba. According to an eyewitness, the incident occurred when the two comedians allegedly attempted to force their way past the stern-looking soldiers into the stadium. The source added that the security men, who did not care about their identity, ordered them to retreat or be dealt with.jpeg&STREAMOID=k7NwWGjODr78Vf8k47K1py6SYeqqxXXqBcOgKOfTXxTolrNK5pPNOE2uca2xZwfiwLkdkNm4NaK1iliY4aRX7GEabxkeoo57KN3LcI4Be79xyJSXHeyn6i9C8rc3E0xoX_kuXYWCUJRqviwH8FNPwULIcdFM9zupuYHBJc2ySZk-&width=333

Before the two entertainers could make up their minds to withdraw from the gate, the soldiers descended on them. It took the timely intervention of Ali Baba, (who threatened to stop the show) for ‘I go dye’ to be released by his tormentors. By then, he was already reeling in agony, with blood all over him from the slashes of the horsewhips. The other comedian, Ogus Baba, who showed some bravery by attempting to save his fellow comedian from the horsewhips of the angry soldiers, was not spared either as he also got his share of the flogging. He was said to have been so badly battered that he had to be rushed to an undisclosed clinic for treatment.

Also touched by the brutality of the soldiers was a personal aide of ‘I go dye’ whose name could not be identified, and another popular comedian, ‘I Go Save’, who got some bruises on his arms and legs.

Paid to perform

In a telephone conversation, the Warri-born comedian, Mr Agoda said he came to the stadium with his entourage with the intention of performing on the stage as he had been paid by the organisers of the event.

“On getting into the stadium, I was accosted by one of the soldiers and in an attempt to answer him, the other soldier unexpectedly slapped me from behind. The most annoying thing about the whole incident was that when I tried to explain to their superior officer, a colonel, the former soldier shoved me aside and immediately, other soldiers descended on me, beating the living daylight out of me,” Mr Agoda said.

He was later treated by the medical team at the stadium after being rescued from the soldiers by Ali Baba, who condemned the act of the uniformed men...

Mr Agoda has demanded for a public apology from the military for violating his “fundamental human right.” “This must be published in national newspapers,” he said.

Was favoured singer, D'banj truly beaten blue black by rapper, Ikechukwu Onunaku? This is the question music lovers and fans of the artistes are asking. They should know, however, that the veracity or otherwise of this allegation is akin to the archetype fart in a masquerade garb that must be borne by its bearer, no matter how putrid and pungent.

Some are postulating that if indeed Ikechukwu did not beat up D'banj, what led to his sudden ouster from Mo'Hits with whose members he hitherto enjoyed a cordial relationship?

Since his days as a Storm Records ensign, the 36-year-old rapper had always been a constant fixture in all Mo'Hits musical and social endeavours. When he officially disengaged from Storm, it was assumed that Mo'Hits, helmed by Don Jazzy and D'banj, would be his next label.

This assumption gained grounds when the braggadocious lyricist and founder of World Famous Academy featured the duo in a couple of his songs especially Wind Am Well in his last album. Even his current rave song, Critical, has the lyrical imprimatur of D'banj and the production aplomb of Don Jazzy. So, what went wrong between the two parties? Neither party was ready to go into details but there are undertones of girl-friend snatching among other details.

However, sources close to the label say the issue is far more fundamental and profound than that. Issues got to a head recently when the wave-making label denied that Ikechukwu was their artiste, affirming that he was only a friend of the house. And that set the rumour mill in auto drive.

E-Punch sources disclosed that indeed there was a face-off between the rapper and D'banj but it did not degenerate into fisticuffs...

It could not have because sinewy Ikechukwu is a black belt holder in karate with further expertise in Shotokan, aikido and tai chi. In fact, Ikechukwu was quoted as saying that the closest he got to being physical with his former collaborator was when he used to take him in karate lessons.

With a tone of finality, he says, "Ok, all you rumour mongers, false prophets and bearers of fake gist, I'm gonna say this once, I did not beat up D'Banj, case closed." Even Don Jazzy who is typically taciturn on such matters denied the allegation, saying it could never have happened.

IBB "bribes" Journalists

Five months ago, a friend of mine, who edits a national daily, sent me a text message agreeing substantially with my column, ‘The Punch and the rest of us’, except the generalised conclusion that “all (journalists) have sinned and fallen short of the glory of the profession”. There are still some journalists, he submits, who toe the narrow path of integrity. Of course I knew where he was coming from, but I also knew the context in which I had made that statement.

I revisit that statement in light of the stories spewing out of the political beat, specifically on the race for the 2011 presidential elections and how it affects the integrity of news.

As part of the effort to sell his candidature for the presidency, former military president, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) invited as many as 40 journalists to his Minna home on August 14 for an interview. I have heard questions asked about why he should invite journalists to his home instead of a public place if he didn’t have an ulterior motive, and why he should offer monetary gifts to the journalists in the name of paying for their transportation.

One news medium, which has championed this opposition in the open, is the online agency, Sahara Reporters. According to SR each of the journalists received N10 million for heeding Babangida’s call on his presidential ambition. That is N400 million just for one night’s interview from an aspirant yet to win his party’s nomination if it were true. But it was not. When some of the journalists complained about the fictional sum, SR changed the story on August 19, saying it was just “a paltry N250, 000 each”. Rather than admit its initial error SR simply said, “our accountants have told us that going by the number of 40 journalists in attendance, we are still around the same ballpark of N10 million”. So much for credible reporting!

Three days later, SR followed up with ‘IBB and his Rogue Journalists’, accusing the journalists of roguery and professional misconduct; roguery, because they collected money from two sources—their employers who presumably authorised and funded the trip and their news source, IBB; misconduct because it is unethical for them to demand/receive gratification from news sources for their services.

And on August 23 in ‘IBB Nocturnal Press Parley: Punch fires Editorial board Chairman’, SR stayed on top of the story by reporting that Adebolu Arowolo, editorial board chairman of the Punch, had lost his job for going on that trip without his management’s approval..

When Abigail Ige, an HND II student of the Department of Microbiology, Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, left her hostel on Monday for Fayose Market on Ajilosun Road in the Ekiti State capital to buy fingerlings to be used for her project, she felt there was nothing to fear because her mission was a genuine one..

PUNCH METRO gathered that at the market, a policeman accosted her and demanded to know the contents of Ige's bag. According to eyewitnesses' accounts, while Ige saw nothing wrong in the policeman's demand, his insistence that the search would be conducted at a nearby police station infuriated the student.

This was the beginning of trouble for Ige, who is now in excruciating pain at the University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti.

She said, "I went to Fayose Market to buy some fingerlings for my project. As I was coming back, a policeman met me and said he wanted to search my hand bag. I told him to empty the contents of the bag right there in the market because I am aware of their tricks.

"He said 'no' and snatched the bag from me and took it to their station. After I finished buying other things I needed, I went to the station, since it is not far from where he met me. As I got there, he said that he would deal with me because I refused to allow him to search my bag in the market. He asked me to enter the cell and I refused, because I knew I had not committed any offence.

"Thereafter, two policemen and two policewomen came out and started beating me. When I became tired, they now dragged me inside the cell. The first policeman, Femi, came inside the cell with a plank and hit me on the head four times. A policewoman came inside the cell and pleaded that they should leave me but they refused. I later passed out. But before then, they said that if I died, nothing would happen."

The woman, who sold fingerlings to Ige, saw what she went through in the hands of the police and quickly alerted the polytechnic.

The Rector of the Polytechnic, Mrs. Taiwo Akande, in an interview with journalists said that the case had been reported to the police authorities, adding that it took time before the school authorities prevailed on the students not to invade the police station.

She, however, said that how the police handled the case would determine the next step the school would take.

The Commissioner of Health, Dr. Femi Thomas, has visited the student at the hospital to know how she was responding to treatment.

A lawmaker representing Ikere II at the state House of Assembly, Mr. Bolu Akomolafe, who also visited the student, said that the House would summon the Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, Mr. Katso Kakwe, to the House on the matter.

Akomolafe said the matter was of public importance and it would be given priority when the House reconvenes on Wednesday (today).

The Ekiti State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Jimoh Mohammed, told PUNCH METRO that the command was already investigating the matter.

Despite beating France, the 1998 World Cup winners in a friendly game on Tuesday night in Saint Etienne, Nigeria’s Super Eagles retained their 30th position on the global scale of the FIFA ranking released yesterday. Nigeria however remains Africa’s second best behind Cameroon. Ghana’s Black Stars are third while Cote D’Ivoire is fourth with Egypt fifth. In the sixth place is Gabon while Burkina Faso moved up to the seventh. Nigeria’s rival in the World Cup Group 2 Tunisia is eighth with Guinea and Mali completing the African top ten placement. A jump-up of six places in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking will help the morale of the team, who are chasing a first-ever place at the FIFA World Cup™ finals which next year is being hosted in neighbouring South Africa. After holding Nigeria to a draw in their opening tie of the final group phase in March, Mozambique's Mambas are brimming with confidence as they prepare for two matches on the road in June - first away against Tunisia on 6 June and then onto Kenya for a meeting in Nairobi on 20 June. Mozambique are now in 80th place in the world standings, edging ever closer to their best-ever position of 66th, set some 12 years ago. The team are now well ahead of their average position of 104 and showing steady progress with each passing month. Indeed, Mozambique won the award in 2007 as the Best Mover in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, ahead of Norway and New Caledonia. June will be a watershed month as the two away trips present a real examination of the extent of their potential. Mozambique have been flirting with African football's superpowers in recent years but the jury is still out on whether they have the credentials to join the elite ranks. European champions Spain continue to lead the way in the June edition of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, and they still hold a comfortable lead at the top. Within the top ten, there is movement directly behind the Iberians, however, as the Netherlands have overtaken Germany and reclaimed second place in the Ranking for the first time since October 2005. Other teams to have traded places are Italy (4th, up 1) and Brazil (5th, down 1), as well as England (6th, up 1) and Argentina (7th, down 1). The next FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking will be published on 1 July 2009.
