She is Sleeping With her Inlaws

I Am Doing Something Abominable And I Know But I Need Help

I am like I said doing something abominable and I know. But I cant help myself. I am an existing member of this very popular "website" but I cant post this using my original ID for fear of the stigma cos some of friends in school knows me online.

I am 23yrs old and I am sleeping with my two elder sisters husbands. I am the last girl in a family of 4, 3 girls & a boy. The boy is the oldest. The most painful part is that I am in love one, who happens to be my immediate elder sister's husband. my immediate elder sister is 4yrs older than me. I have always had a crush on her husband right from when they were dating but I never thought it will get to the stage of me sleeping with him. Their marriage is 2yrs although they have no children yet. I am in LASU and their house is close to my school so I moved in with them after their wedding. Our illicit affair didnt start until april last year. My sister works on the Island and leaves for work very early in the morning while the husband is a business man in Alaba market. So I am left with making his food in the mornings before he goes to work. The first time was a mistake but it has never stopped after that mistake. It is actually a daily routine except on weekends that my sister doesnt work. I have cried several times because of what I am doing to her because she doesnt deserve it. She is a wonderful person...

On the part of my eldest sister, her husband is very wealthy and so he buys me things I can only dream of whenever he travels. He calls me baby of the house. They have 3 kids. His own is that he seduced me with a drink on my 20th birthday. I lived with them from when I was 17. We still do once in a while but its usually against my will cos he buys me stuffs even as I am in my immediate elder sister's house. I think I am finished if this thing gets out. I want to stop but I am already in love with my immediate elder sister's husband. He is so caring and so romantic. Someone please slap me out of this.

12166299070?profile=originalThe incredible success of Jenifa, a movie she wrote and released on Olasco Films Limited ushered her on to the national stage and also opened the floodgate of other pictures from her Scene One Production stable.

Omo getto

advertisement

Not only did Jenifa catapult Funke Akindele aka Jenifa to Nollywood centre stage, it also fetched her series of awards including the prestigious Best Actress of the Year award conferred on her in 2009 by African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA).

Funke Akindele or Jenifa (whichever you prefer to call her) is back on the block with a brand new flick.

Titled Omo Getto (child of getto), the new movie which was released in time for the last Christmas celebration on Olasco stable, expectedly, is creating some buzz especially among the followers of Nollywood movies done in Yoruba lingo. It tells the story of life in ghetto with Ayomide, a character played by Funke Akindele, as the main character. ..

Omo Getto parades some of the known faces that featured in Jenifa. Actors like Yinka Qaudiri, Adebayo Salami (aka Oga Bello), Eniola Badmus who interpreted same ‘tough girl’ role she acted in Jenifa as Gbogbo Big Girl thus eliciting the question as to whether she is becoming a stereotype thespian on Scene One Production Movies...

Other characters in the movie which was written and produced by Funke Akindele are Taiwo Hassan, Ireti Osayemi, Peju Omobolanle, Ronke Ojo, Racheal Onaiga, Bimbo Thomas Sola Asedeko and Bisi Komolafe.

While this writer finds it difficult to categorise this movie as a comedy, some scenes where Salami (Babaonibaba) exhibited perfectly, some traits that can qualify him as what the Yoruba calls Omo otta agbalagba (elderly gangster) especially his ranting at a beer parlour and at the police station would have led to that categorisation.

With her gang of ‘tough girls’ like Badamus (Busty), Funke (Lefty’s) first victim was a young lady whose mother’s jewellery worth N100,000 was snatched from her and all her pleading with passersby in the community to help her retrieve it fell on deaf ears as nobody was ready to confront them because of their notoriety in the neighbourhood; even young men were scared stiff of them as they were always ready to confront any man who crosses their path like they did to a motorist who queried a commercial cyclist that rammed into his car while conveying the them to one of their missions.

It was at this scene that the gang, particularly Ayomide, who has been on the run from the long arm of the law for inflicting an injury that left her fiancé, Yanju, in a state of coma, met her waterloo as she was arrested by the police only to be identified at the police station as a wanted person.

But surprisingly, Ayomide denied that she is the person on the wanted list of the police and that her name is not Ayomide but Shalewa, the daughter of Babaonibaba and Mamaonimama.

It was at the police station that it was revealed that Peju (who played the role of Ayomide’s mother) is not her biological mother; that she bought her from Babaonibaba at birth at the hospital for the sum of N3 million but surprisingly, Babaonibaba had forgotten the evil he did years back when he sold Ayomide to Peju; it took a private discussion between Babaonibaba and Peju for him to remember the evil she did but still insisted on Ayomide’s release from detention. It was also at the police station that Peju revealed to her lawyer that not only is Ayomide a twin but that she was not the biological mother of Ayomide.

On his release Ayomide with her twin sister submitted themselves to spiritual cleansing meant primarily to deliver her from her anger problem that has led her into trouble severally.

The locations where truly the best ghetto environment one can find anywhere in Nigeria – first class slumps, the picture quality crystal clear.

Kudos must also be given to Salami for acting the area father role efficiently and effectively.

However, the down low side of the film includes the arrest of Ayomide’s mother for an offence that her daughter committed. Was Funke trying to say that the sins of the son or daughter can be visited on parents or was she portraying what the law enforcement agents, especially the police, do to the relatives of a suspect in any crime incident?

The unrestricted display of bottles of an alcoholic drink with all its label which Babaonibaba consumed freely left one asking how much the brewers of the beverage paid for such mileage.

The duplication of the movie into four CDs is unnecessary because except for the promotional advert of other films on Olasco Films stable, Omo Getto is not more than an hour 30 minutes story just as the part two of the film which is to come is equally not necessary as whoever has watched part one will tell what will happen in part two.

vybz-kartel-thumb-400xauto-16061.jpgFormerly brown-skinned reggae artist Vybz Kartel is walking around about five shades lighter to the shock and dismay of his fans.  Get the deets on how Vybz went from cocoa to butter pecan inside...

Vybz Kartel, a Jamaican Reggae and dancehall artist, recently lightened his skin and it's not going over well with his fans.  For his part, Vybz says his skin lightening is similar to tanning.  SMH.

When asked about the change Vybz replied,

"This is my new image.  You can expect the unexpected. I feel comfortable with black people lightening their skin. They want a different look. It's tantamount to white people getting a sun tan."..

Although he won't reveal what he is using to change his complexion, some sources say that his newly endorsed brand of cake soap can lighten the skin.  But even that is up for debate since fellow artist, Bounty Killer, claims his own mother has used Vybz's cake soap and her skin has not changed.

First Sammy Sosa....now this.  How do you feel about black folks going a few shades lighter?

Tragedy struck again yesterday as 18 persons were reportedly burnt to death, in an accident involving a truck and an 18-seater bus on the Benin-Ore-Lagos Road...

The accident reportedly occurred near Okada town, in Ovia North-east Local Government Area of Edo State when an on coming bus veered off its track, while trying to avoid bad spots, and rammed into the bus which burst into flames.

The bus, according to witnesses was travelling from Lagos to the eastern part of the country.

“We were watching helplessly as the bus was on fire with the occupants. There was no help in sight, there was nobody to help, there was nothing we could do,” said one of the witnesses.

At press time, a senior official of the Federal Roads Safety Commission (FRSC) at the old Benin toll gate confirmed the incident but the commission’s spokesman, Olu Olumotomi, said he was still expecting the details of the accident.

He said his men were still at the scene evacuating the victims to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).

12166297883?profile=originalNollywood’s rising star, Tonto Dike hails from Ikwere, Port Harcourt, in Rivers State. She was born on June 9, 1985 and after her primary and secondary education, she was admitted into Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, and currently studying Petro-Chemical Engineering.

Dike

Growing up

Growing up was wonderful because I had everything I wanted and wasn’t deprived of anything. My father was wealthy, so he did everything possible for me. I went to the best schools in my state, I graduated with good results from my primary and secondary schools and I hope to graduate with the best result after my degree programme. I have had parental love, care, family ties while growing up..

It’s been love all the way the only thing I didn’t appreciate while growing up was the fact that I could not mix with my peer group, which is why I can’t speak my dialect up till now. Another was growing up without my mother. She died when I was just three years old, so I practically didn’t know her, but it was a joy to know that I had someone who I could say replaced her.

My journey into Nollywood

I got into the industry after I left the reality T.V show The next movie star in 2005, I was first runner-up, when Kingsley Ogboso won, and

and from there, I started looking for contacts and fortunately for me, a lot of people saw my talent, I got involved in the reality show first because I saw it as a way of getting close to the industry, I had hoped that from it I would move into the industry and it happened as I wanted.

Challenges

Sincerely, I don’t think I have had to go through any challenge. This is because I don’t see them as challenges; I am a very prayerful person. I believe so much in God and it seems like everything just falls at my feet. Anything I want just falls at my feet. I can’t say I have had to go through challenges since I got into the industry.

Big break

Perhaps, I should say my first movie, but that was released last year so I will say my second movie, entitled, Holy Cross which I did with Nonso Diobi, Uncle Pete Edochie and Jim Iyke, after seeing the film, the producers and directors wanted to use me in their own films, Right from my second movie people started to look out for me.

Nollywood

I see the industry as a fruitful one, which can yield more fruits in the future. All we need is hard work, perseverance and prayer. The industry is like a newborn baby that has to be nurtured and well taken care of. I still think that we really need to work hard because we are way backward. Though we may be doing well, I still think we can do better.

Relationship

I am in one, which I am very proud of. He is okay for me. I took what God gave me, and remember, I said God gives me anything that I desire. As for how he feels when I am on set with all the kissing and hugging, I’ll tell you something: When I say that I took what God gave me, I meant that He gave me a package in a man, all I want in life He gave to me in one person.

May man gives me endurance, patience, love and he is someone who understands. He really understands, so I don’t have a problem with my handling of roles. He might not be okay with the roles all the while, but he still prays for me and hopes for a better future for me because he knows I love my job.

Playing music with Patience Ozorkwor

First of all, the music is owned by Amaco Investments; Charles, Patience and I were just called to mime it. I had fun being in the video and I didn’t know it was going to be this big as everybody is talking about it. I have no plans whatsoever to get into music.

First day on set

I was very scared. I was shy. I didn’t know what to think or expect until the lights came on, then I knew that this was serious business. But I had people like Uncle Pete Edochie, Nonso Diobi, Desmond Elliot, Nkiru Sylvanus, and Uncle Larry Coldsweat. They kept saying ‘you can do it’ and I did it.

What you can’t wear

I will not be caught in a long skirt because I hate it. I also can’t wear Iro and Buba, it’s fashion for the older women. I am still very young and I need to feel free in my body you can’t catch me being very religious in my dressing, I love to dress the way I love to dress.

Sexy part of me

I give that to my lips. I love them and people have told me that they love them too, talking about what people don’t know about me, a lot of people don’t know that I am very nice, a wonderful and serious minded person.

Coping with school and acting

I am in my final year now, and this year, I have decided that I must spend almost all of it in school doing school work. Though I will still be on set, I hope to be in school more. I will work it out, I don’t have a plan yet, but I will be able to be in school more often than I used to.

Philosophy of life

I have a lot of them but I will share one, if you have your eyes on something, on a particular level in life when you get to that level, always know that there are so many other levels left to climb. Try to be on top, even when you are on top, try to be on top of the top.

Artiste admired

Back home, I only admire two females - Aunty Joke Sylvia and Rita Dominic. Why Rita? It’s because when I want to recount how my interest in the movies started, her name will be mentioned as she inspired me a lot. And for Aunty Joke, she is a wonderful person, she is joy to me, I watch her and I feel alive and want to do more than she has done, Internationally I love Al Paccino and Julia Roberts, they are inspiration to me.

In five years

I really have faith and hope that I will be better than I am now. I am not striving to end in Nollywood, I intend to get into Hollywood, I don’t know how I will do that but I know that God will make a way for me.

A word to fans

I say thank to all, I really appreciate their love by buying my movies, watching them and appreciating me. I wake up each day knowing that without my fans in my life, there would be no full Tonto. I love them all.

12166298468?profile=originalTeju Babyface Show: Beating the odds

Onoshe Nwabuikwu

The Teju Babyface Show on Silverbird Television is hosted by comedian, Teju 'Babyface' Oyelakin. Going by the previous attempts by comedians to present shows on TV, I'd have given this programme a miss. I had more or less given up on watching something that would be actually funny, a show which would mix the right amount of humour/comedy/politics/entertainment and still end up interesting to watch.

I remember a comedian who shall remain nameless (as this is a New Year) presenting a show which was hardly funny. It appeared as if the comedian saw the show as 'awoof' or 'osho-free' and didn't want to bother himself about a show people hadn't paid to watch. So, he stinted on his humour and generally threw his weight around. Then, there were those shows where so called professional comedians couldn't even do a half decent impersonation.

Surely, you do get my drift now. So, let's not waste more time on what wasn't and gush over what is. Where many have failed, Teju Babyface has succeeded in producing not just a funny show, but a show that acquits itself favourably on other counts. He has a Sketch as a poltician/cum governor with Stella Damascus as his perenial interviewer .And the interview with Sunny Ade is a classic Representation of Old School Wisdom lol !

The best part for me is the ease and seeming effortlessness of Teju Babyface as presenter, interviewer, comedian, etc. As an interviewer, he keeps his focus by managing to get his guests to loosen up. He's managed to get Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa to relive her former life as member of a band by rapping on air! Jay Z she isn't, but it was just the kind of let-your-hair-down fun we do need TV for. He also got ex-international football star, Segun Odegbami, dancing to King Sunny Ade's song -the show's theme song. And for those of us who missed Odegbami's 'Mathematical' days, his 'moves' sure showed he still has 'it'.

To TV viewers, radio listeners, and music fans in Nigeria, ace broadcaster and founder of Kennis Music, Mr. Kenny 'Keke' Ogungbe, needs no introduction. He shares his experience with CHUX OHAI

From the Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation to RayPower 100.5 FM, Kennis Music, and now Rainbow 94.1 FM, how would you describe your life as a broadcaster?

My entertainment and broadcasting life didn't even start with the OGBC. Many people don't know this. I started my career with NTA Abeokuta. That was in the early 1980s when the NTA first came to Ogun State, precisely 30 years ago. I recall starting work with Yemi Shodimu. We both started work at NTA Abeokuta on the same day. From there, I travelled to the US for higher education in New Orleans. I got a master's in Mass Communications. But my first degree is in accounting. I'm an accountant. I'm a CPA candidate. CPA stands for Chartered Public Accountant of California. People don't know about this. They just think that Kenny likes to count figures and numbers. All the time I was in the business school, I knew I would be going into the media. So, my minor was in the media. When I got to postgraduate school, I branched into the media. I took my second degree in radio, television, and film. I didn't enter into this business out of nowhere. I was prepared. I worked in OGBC when I returned to Nigeria. That was where people knew me. From there I went into politics briefly. I was the campaign manager for Dr. Raymond Dokpesi when he was running for the Senate during the Social Democratic Party/National Republican Convention days. We were in the NRC then and he contested the Edo North Senatorial seat. It was after this that we established RayPower FM radio station.

Was it your idea to start RayPower FM?

I don't like to say it.

Your enthusiasm for that radio station makes it look like it was your own idea.

It was because I was allowed to express myself, to do what had never been done before in Nigeria. The station turned out to be the pioneer of privately-owned media in the country. Today, it has given birth to many other radio and TV stations. We brought a lot of razzmatazz from Hollywood because I grew up in Hollywood. After my college degrees, I went to California and I worked in the media. So, that was what fetched all that live coverage of entertainment events across the world, such as the Grammy Awards and Soul Train Awards.

What did you set out to achieve as a broadcaster?

It was the 24-hour broadcast. I started it in Nigeria with the help of my boss (Dokpesi). The first radio station to ever embark on a 24-hour broadcast is RayPower. Also, the first satellite TV station in Nigeria to go on the air for 24 hours is the Africa Independent Television. When we started this, there were all kinds of criticisms. People asked why we decided to broadcast for 24 hours. Some said we would never be able to add commercials to our programmes with the new arrangement. But today, the story is different.

Sourcing electric power must have posed a serious challenge to you initially at RayPower. How did you cope with it?

When we started RayPower, electricity was a serious problem, really. For several months, the National Electric Power Authority didn't provide us with power. It was after we had spent 18 months that Dokpesi decided to buy poles and electric cables, buy transformers, and drill a borehole because there was no water supply there. Before he did this, we were virtually operating on a power generator. Yet, people were asking how come we never, even once, punctuated our programmes with the phrase, 'due to power failure, we're sorry...' At the time, we were having five sets of different high-calibre power generators.

Apart from providing entertainment, did you also set out to make profit?

Of course, RayPower wasn't a public enterprise. It was a private enterprise and that was what even gave birth to AIT. In the long run, that also took it to the level of a public liability company. RayPower opened doors to other radio stations, such as Rhythm 93.7 FM and Star FM. It was after the success story of RayPower that Rhythm came up. Today, everybody is on air and the whole frequency in Lagos is almost taken.

Do you enjoy being in the limelight?

It gives me joy. It's the passion for the job that we do that really counts, not the cash returns that one gets. If you don't have passion, you won't be able to do it. Instead, you will be left by the wayside. The moment I switch on the microphone, I'm high. Naturally, I derive joy from the knowledge that anytime I speak into the microphone, millions of people out there will be listening to me.

How do you cope with your female fans?

Why should female fans bother me? I'm neither a singer nor a rapper. I'm not a sex symbol either. I know I'm seen in that light, but I don't even think about it. I'm just polite to ladies. If any lady walks in here and says 'hello' to me, I say 'hi' to her and even put on a smile. I'm a very accessible person. I would shake hands and talk with you. But if you decide to behave in a funny way, I won't take it. My friends know me. They know that I can be very blunt.

Apart from broadcasting, what other dreams did you have when you were growing up?

To be honest with you, my dream was to have one united Nigeria in which everybody would be respected and live as one family. I had hopes that there would be constant supply of electricity and water in this country and enough amenities for everybody, especially when I left Nigeria. I left Nigeria in 1981 and I got my first degree two-and-a-half years later. In America, I had a car and lived in an apartment of my own. I was in my teens. I didn't go to school in buses or trains. In my first day in the university, I bought a car: a yellow Nissan B210. It was like having a yellow Hummer jeep in school. I owe everything to the family I come from.

You haven't answered my question.

I dreamed of a better country and that was why when I completed my education in America, I came back home. I saw America as a very organised country and I felt that Nigeria could also be like that. Actually, I dreamed that Nigeria could be like that.

You sound as if you had an exciting experience in America.

Yes, I had a wonderful experience in America. A lot of people studying in America at the time had to work in order to pay their fees. They had to do odd jobs. But I never had to do that. I lived well as a student. Of course, as soon as I got my first degree, I jumped into the master's degree programme, which took me nine months to complete. That also gave me enough inspiration.

Does it mean you had no challenges in America?

I haven't said that. I had many challenges in America. One of them was the fact that I was black in a country where everybody was supposed to be white. I faced the challenge of racial discrimination. I recall the day I wanted to buy a sofa in a shop and the owner looked at me in a funny way, as if he felt I couldn't afford it. I didn't like the reception I got, so I had to look elsewhere for the sofa. Even the way I talk and write posed some challenges to me. If, because I was taught to write in the English way, I wrote in a way that I felt was best, I would end up earning a dash of red ink across whatever I had written. The result was that at school, I learnt quickly to express myself in a simple and clear manner.

Like Siamese twins, you are practically everywhere with Dayo Adeneye and both of you do things together all the time. How did your friendship with him start?

We met in school.

Which school?

Southern University in New Orleans. Dayo was there as well. It was a scenario in which two youths far away from home, who went to the same school separately, now found about another Nigerian on campus who came from the same province back home and attended a neighbouring secondary school. Dayo and I are both Ijebu to boot. That was how we got to know each other.

What makes your relationship with him special?

It is because he is a special friend of mine. He is a special person and also treats me like a special person. When we have such scenario all the time, things will always work in Nigeria.

Did you drag Dayo into broadcasting or was it the reverse?

Actually it was Dokpesi who invited Dayo to join us when we started RayPower.

Now that you are involved with Rainbow FM, what happens to your pets, Kennis Music and Prime Time Entertainment?

Kennis Music has a general manager. Also, Prime Time Entertainment has its own GM. The GM for Kennis Music also runs the TV arm, the radio arm, and the audio production. The same thing applies to the GM of Prime Time Entertainment. Whenever they need me, especially when there is an important event, they call me. In about two or three weeks from now, Prime Time Africa will be going for the Grammy Awards and I will be there. On radio and TV for Prime Time Africa, I'm always there. So, the job is just getting bigger.

Is it true that at some point, Eedris AbdulKareem severed his contract with Kennis Music?

People just say all kinds of things. I try not to overemphasise anything because I'm a media person. I simply allow my hard work to speak for me. If I want to give out information, I write a press release, I call my publicist and get it out. Whenever we have anything with our artistes, some smart journalists will just start cooking something. The business we had with Eedris was very straight-forward and everything was fulfilled. He didn't jump the contract. He just felt he wanted to do his own thing with La Creme Entertainment. And now that he felt he needed to work with us again, he came back and we're working together. You know I was even featured on one of his records titled, My Calabar Girl.

Who was the Calabar girl that you sang about?

I'm still looking for her. We're even going to do a reality show on this.

Not too long ago, you were spotted leading a protest alongside Charly Boy against a matter involving the MCSN, COSON, and the Nigeria Copyrights Commission in Abuja. Have you also turned an activist?

To be honest with you, I've recorded more songs than anybody in Nigeria in the past 10 years. I've recorded over 71 music albums as a producer and owner of recordings. If you sign a contract with me, I'll record you and sponsor that album. That makes me the owner of the recording. The artiste is the owner of the voice. Whether he writes the song or hires somebody to write it for him, Kennis Music owns that particular recording because no one can start playing only your voice anywhere you go without the instruments. I've more of that particular type of recording than anybody in Nigeria right now. And each of the 71 albums I mentioned contains the average of 13 to 15 songs. If you multiply 15 songs by 71 albums, it equals over 1,000 songs. So if I've such a large amount of works in my possession, this makes me a stakeholder in the music industry. So I can't be pushed around when it comes to the issue of entertainment. In a situation where there are over 30 oil companies, over 20 banking institutions, over 20 insurance companies, and about 10 telecommunications companies, and they are all striving well, why should anybody wake up and say there should be one collecting society, when it comes to collecting money on recordings through radio or TV stations or other value-added services? I know where I belong: the MCSN. Internationally, I belong to EMI and Broadcast Media Incorporated Association of America. And in Nigeria, BMI is represented by MCSN. In fact, MCSN represents all international outfits in the world. Now, I'm saying if you register another company that I don't belong to and this company collects money from Rainbow FM, for instance, how do I now get paid, since I'm not a member of the society? Everybody can't be a member of one society. Whoever made the law that says there should be only one collecting society for everybody hasn't carried along all stakeholders. The law is faulty. It should be corrected because laws are not made forever. Laws are always updated according to the yearnings of the people. That was why we took the issue to the Attorney-General of the Federation and he said he would look into it to see how it could be amicably resolved. Second, as a broadcaster, I'm a user of recordings. Apart from the fact that I'm the highest recording person in this country, I'm also one of the highest users of audio and audio-visual recordings, I don't even want one person to be the governing body. I want to have a choice in how much I should pay for using recordings. In a situation where you don't have a choice, TV and radio stations will gang up and say your price is too high. If you say you don't want to listen to them and they refuse to play that person's record, who suffers? It is the artiste. I'm not a noise maker, but when an issue involves me and the livelihood of my children, I won't keep quiet about it.

What plans do you have for Rainbow FM?

As usual, my objective is to improve on the quality of radio broadcasting in Nigeria. I believe we're going to do better than any other station in the country. For example, I want to re-introduce live broadcasts on Rainbow FM. Part of it includes the Friday Night live jams that we used to host at RayPower in those days.

How do you combine your tight schedule with family life?

My wife, Bolajoko, has been a blessing to my life. She is the reason why I live and I'm called a family man today. I met her over 20 years ago before I even joined OGBC. She knew me when I just entered the university. I came home for holidays and I met her. Since then, it's been a fantastic relationship. She has always been there for me, giving me all the support I need from her.

How do you unwind?

I'm a lucky man. My job unwinds me. Working hard and getting paid for it is the only way I unwind.

Until last week, the hope of the Ukahueleigbes was that their daughter, 17-year-old Ella Oyindamola, would soon graduate from the University of Lagos and make them proud by getting a good job. But this hope was dashed last week as she died in a mysterious circumstance.

Ella, a second year student of Marine Sciences, was allegedly drugged by a family friend last week Tuesday. PUNCH METRO gathered that the drug, suspected to be a sleeping tablet, put the girl to sleep and she never woke up..

PUNCH METRO gathered that efforts made by her friend to revive her failed. She, however, died at the Lagos Univesity Teaching Hospital where she was rushed to.

The Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Olukayode Amund, told PUNCH METRO that he got a report that a girl living in the institution's Moremi Hall had died. However, he added that the circumstances of her death were yet to be known.

He said, "The girl was a student of Marine Sciences and the Head of Department confirmed it. She was allocated Moremi Hall and for now we have collected her contact address and her telephone number. Once we receive a coroner's report, the school will know what step to take."

He said that that the initial report brought to him was that Ella went out with her boyfriend and was later taken to LUTH by the boyfriend before she died in the hospital.

But an official in the Dean's office, who craved anonymity, said that Ella's parents had alleged that their daughter was poisoned. The official said the parents claimed that the man responsible was not her boyfriend but a neighbour, whom she had not seen for a long time. The parent added that both decided to take a drink and she later died after taking the drink.

But Almund said that since the university was not responsible for the girl's death, it would not pay any compensation to her family. "But she might be entitled to insurance claim if she registered for the school's insurance scheme, which students were advised to do," he said.

He advised students to stay under the protection of the university. "What we do is to counsel students, we don't nag them because we are dealing with adults. They can make a choice whether to stay under the protection of the university or to go outside the protection of the University of Lagos," he said.

Spokesman of the state police command, Mr.Frank Mba, said he was not sure that police had received a report of the death. But our correspondent gathered that Ella's parents and the university were waiting for an autopsy report before making a formal report.

Although our correspondent made strenous efforts to obtain the telephone numbers of Ella's parents from the UNILAG Public Relations Officer, Mr. Dare Adebisi, and the late undergraduate's friends, he was unsuccessful.

Repeated calls to Adebisi's number were not answered. A text message was also not replied.

A unified Presidential Campaign Committee is taking shape, possibly chaired by Atiku Abubakar, to map out the strategy on how to garner votes from the length and breadth of the country for Goodluck Jonathan’s run for President. Both Atiku and Ibrahim Babangida disclosed on Sunday that they will not go to court over the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries on January 13, where Jonathan won the Presidential ticket.Sources in the party headquarters in Abuja said a unified campaign team and other election matters have been discussed by a caucus and other organs. In this wise, the Campaign Organisations of Jonathan and Atiku, hitherto at loggerheads, may be collapsed into the Presidential Campaign Committee. The leaders of the party are anxious to reconcile and repair all breaches caused by the primaries. The move to draft Atiku to head the campaign was started by Jonathan himself, in conjunction with the PDP hierarchy and some Governors.Jonathan has reached out to Atiku with a proposal to unify their forces, which will be headed by him, a major development as the party gears up for the campaign proper.Atiku played this role during the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidency, and party leaders consider him the perfect pick for the big job.Not only can he unify a party fractured by the bitter confrontation in the primaries, but can also bring into the campaign his strong personality and organisational skill.A source in his Campaign Organisation confirmed that the PDP hierarchy has made suggestions to him, which he is discussing with his associates across the land.Atiku is taking time out to rest, and to “consider his future role in the party,” the source disclosed. It had been feared that Atiku might consider moving to another party to actualise his Presidential ambition. But that option appears unattractive to him, as he has emphasised that he has returned to the PDP he considers his home.He played a big part in building the party from scratch in 1998.PDP leaders are putting their heads together on how to use his considerable political talent, influence, and resources. But they are also at pains to design a formula that would allow Atiku and Obasanjo, the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman, to bury the hatchet and work together, given their past confrontations and mutual dislike for each other. As it has been the tradition of the PDP to hit the ground running, the party is getting ready to begin a nationwide campaign to win the presidency in April.PDP leaders anticipate a tough Presidential campaign – against the likes of Muhammadu Buhari and Nuhu Ribadu – and are therefore pulling in all their old war horses.A source close to the party’s National Organising Secretary, Uche Secondus, said a campaign plan is going through the approval process. But the plan may change substantially if Atiku accepts to head the team. The source in his campaign organisation confirmed the move but insisted that “Atiku will not fall for the gambit. It is true. We have been informed by a high ranking PDP official that such an idea is in the offing but we will have nothing to do with it.”However, National Publicity Secretary, Ahmed Alkali, feigned ignorance of the plan.“I am hearing it for the first time from you. I am not aware that such a thing has been discussed. Not to my knowledge,” he said.Despite that denial, former Senate President, Ken Nnamani, who supported Atiku in the primaries, told Daily Independent on Wednesday that the move to unify the party at this time is the best option since the primaries are over.“I am not speaking for anybody,” Namani stressed. “But I think it is a good step. We have made our point about what we felt about the primaries.“Since the party has spoken and a candidate has emerged, there is nothing anybody can do at this time than to ensure that the party wins election in April and the only way to achieve this is to work together.”Nnamani did not confirm or deny that he himself has been approached by Aso Rock.He simply put it this way: “They are talking to everybody and I think that is good.”Presidential aide Oronto Douglas had told reporters a day after the primaries that Jonathan was moving fast to enlist the bigwigs into the campaign because the task ahead requires unity of purpose to surmount.Said he: “This is the time for inclusiveness. (Jonathan) has opened a new door. Atiku has a lot to contribute. At his age, he has gathered enough experience that would be very useful to the President, which he will tap for the benefit of all.“(Jonathan) has said there is enough space for the 150 million Nigerians and on the table of Jonathan, there are enough seats for everybody.”It was learnt that Jonathan paid a secret visit to Atiku last Sunday to personally appeal to him to join the campaign. Atiku told him he needed time to consult with his constituency. It is not known whether another meeting has taken place. But what is known is that other big shots in Atiku’s camp have also been approached.“Jonathan is not the one meeting all of them. Various people in his team are meeting with those they know, while he is making his own efforts.“It is an all encompassing thing. The aim is to bring everybody into the fold,” a source said. Some supporters of Atiku already seem to be buying into the idea that it is fruitless to continue the battle after the PDP has taken a decision.

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQlVbdNzZ2VexT6i_Wh287VaZHDQbqTxlntcOFjtvzujbI_J4rRf11clCc2UQThe FBI calls it the biggest mafia round-up in New York history. More than 100 suspected mobsters are being arrested this morning in connection with numerous federal investigations into New York area mob groups as first reported on NBCNewYork.com.

FBI agents along with NYPD and State Police officers, and US Marshals were conducting raids that began in the early morning hours. Federal charges are expected to range from gambling to racketeering to murder.

Law-enforcement officials said members and associates of all five New York mafia families - as well as New Jersey's DeCavalcante family - are among those being arrested.

The arrest operations stretch across the tri-state area with many of the suspects being processed in Brooklyn.  Attorney General Eric Holder is flying up from Washington to take part in the official announcement.  U.S. Attorneys Loretta Lynch, Preet Bharara along with FBI New York Director Janice Fedarcyk and NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly are expected to announce details of the federal charges at an 11 am news conference.

With more than 100 arrests expected, officials said the charges this day surpass the large 2008 mafia raids where 80-plus suspected members of organized crime were charged.

At that time, John 'Jackie the Nose' D'Amico and other reputed leaders of the Gambino crime family were targeted in the U.S. while Italian authorities conducted simultaneous raids on mafia groups there.

FBI officials have said organized crime is still active in New York's construction industry.  Labor union corruption, loansharking and gambling among the other schemes run by the mob.

FBI officials did officially confirm the arrests.

"Early this morning FBI Agents along with our law enforcement partners began arresting over 100 organized crime members for various criminal charges," said Diego Rodriguez of the FBI New York office. "Additional information will be available at the U.S. Attorney's offices later today."

Officials said significant leaders and associates of the Gambino, Genovese, Lucchese, Bonanno, Colombo and DeCavalcante families among those being arrested.

Abuja/Kaduna — Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar yesterday said he has joined forces with two presidential candidates from the north, Governor Ibrahim Shekarau of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and Mallam Nuhu Ribadu of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

The trio said they are joining forces to ensure that President Goodluck Jonathan does not emerge victorious in the forthcoming presidential election.

They spoke on a programme on the Hausa Service Voice of America (VOA) monitored in Kaduna yesterday. They said President Jonathan was unfit to continue to rule Nigeria.

Atiku said it would be wrong for Nigerians to accept President Jonathan for the 2011 election because he was not prepared for leadership and had no political ideology.

He said Nigeria has been pushed into a very bad situation and that a Jonathan presidency will continue to see Nigerians the worse off.

Shekarau lashed out at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) describing it as a corrupt party.

He urged Nigerians to demand from the PDP what it has done with the huge amount of money said to have been expended on electricity in Nigeria, while millions of Nigerians are still in darkness.

Meanwhile, Atiku yesterday rejected insinuations that he had a hand in the chains of events that led to the forced resignation of the former National Chairman of the PDP Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo.

A statement by his campaign organisation said: "The former Vice President could not have been responsible for Nwodo's downfall when he (Atiku) himself was a direct victim of the former chairman's insincerity, double standard, opportunism, selfishness and mischief."The erstwhile chairman delivered the convention to the President but they still went on baying for his blood. That tells you there was more to it than the eye could see. Someone wants blood and you give him palm oil. Does that satisfy him?" the statement contended.

Atiku in the statement recalled that a few weeks to the convention, Nwodo did everything to frustrate Atiku's presidential ambition by making impossible a meeting intended to discuss the modalities of how the January 15, 2011 convention was to hold.

"Nwodo did not agree to meet or even answer phone calls for upwards of two months now. He frustrated every meeting my campaign organisation had requested to discuss serious issues that border on free and fair election, especially the need to create a level-playing ground in which no delegate would feel constrained or intimidated to choose their preferred candidate".

The statement said Nwodo caused crises across the country in many chapters of the party, including Enugu State, where he and Governor Sullivan Chime were engaged in a bitter battle of supremacy.

"It is clear that the former chairman had enough home troubles to contend with," Atiku furthered maintained....

As for the issue of Atiku's return to the party and subsequent waiver granted him to run for the party's ticket, the campaign organisation said the then chairman and the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party were confronted with a fait accompli since the former Vice President was among those re-integrated by the Dr. Alex Ekwueme Committee set up to reconcile the party...

Atiku insisted that he did not have anything to do with the removal and distanced himself from any suggestions that his failed presidential bid was responsible for the unceremonious exit of Nwodo.

Washington D.c — Details of treasury looters and legitimate wealthy Nigerians with secret Swiss bank accounts are up for grabs and may be revealed in the latest round of documents to be published by whistle-blower website, WikiLeaks. A Swiss banker has handed over what he said are secret Swiss banking records to the website dedicated to revealing state secrets as well as those of individuals. Rudolf Elmer confirmed that he handed two discs to WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, in London, and that WikiLeaks could release the details in "a matter of weeks" if it can process them quickly enough. Elmer said he would not reveal the names and is not able to say how many people are involved. A source disclosed that those on the list include the late Head of State Sani Abacha and several politicians - and about 2,000 clients' records are included, but because of the way trusts and corporations are set up, the number of individuals involved cannot be determined. Elmer describes himself as an activist, and banker. "I think, as a banker, I do have the right to stand up if something is wrong," he said, explaining why he gave the documents to WikiLeaks. Elmer is due to go on trial today in Switzerland for violating the country's banking secrecy regulations. Unfazed, he insists that he wants "to let society know what I do know and how this system works because it is damaging our society in the way that money is moved" and hidden in offshore jurisdictions. He began looking into the issue when he was a banker in the Cayman Islands, he added.... When he first looked into the problems of offshore banking it seemed to him like "a mouse tail," but as he investigated in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland, it became a "dragon's tail," and finally a many-headed dragon. Elmer stated on his website that he wants to "challenge Swiss Bank Secrecy at the European Court of Human Rights and the Swiss courts." He has worked at six offshore banking centres, he said, and has been engaged in a long-running battle with Swiss banks over secrecy. Elmer had approached tax authorities and universities with his data, but no one was interested. He was about to give up when he learned about WikiLeaks from a friend. He said he is "grateful" to WikiLeaks for helping him "send the message which I wanted to send," but that he is not trying to use it for "protection" as he faces prosecution. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) disclosed in Abuja on May 20, 2009 that up to $450 million of the over $3 billion allegedly looted by Abacha could not be traced. The disclosure was made by Tim Daniel, a legal expert from the United Kingdom brought in by UNODC to help the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) draft the Bill on Non-Conviction Based Forfeiture of Proceeds and Instrumentalities of Unlawful Activity. Daniel announced that even though there was proof the $450 million was stacked away somewhere, it was yet to be traced. According to him, while the $1.9 billion recovered from the Abacha family by the Federal Government was a major success story in assets recovery, there were still funds stolen from Nigeria yet to be recovered. He said $300 million was still to be repatriated to Nigeria from Luxembourg where it was siphoned by Abacha, despite the letters of request by Abuja. Daniel added that Abacha also stashed $400 million in Liechtenstein which Nigeria was yet to recover. "The cases of Luxembourg and Liechtenstein are cases of monies frozen or lost by banks," he stressed. Daniel noted that Abuja and its partners had intensified the search for the funds, with hope for positive results. Breaking down the $1.9 billion recovered from Abacha, he said $750 million came from voluntary surrender by the family while $570 million was recovered from Switzerland. "$380 million was recovered from Jersey and $150 million, which was the Ajaokuta Steel plant debt was recovered from the UK," he added. He explained that asset recovery involves criminal and civil mechanisms, mutual legal assistance in criminal proceedings, international enforcement of confiscation orders, civil forfeiture, and private civil proceedings. However, Abacha's son, Abba, on May 10 last year began a fresh appeal against a court order to return $350 million in illegally gained assets in Switzerland. Abba was also convicted of being a member of a criminal organisation and given a suspended custodial sentence. A Geneva Magistrate convicted Abba, 41, in November 2009 of participating in a criminal organisation, handed down a suspended prison term, and ordered he surrenders $350 million in illegally obtained assets. Under the Swiss legal system, the appeal brings the case to a court. "This is the first time this monumental embezzlement case is being heard in court," wrote the Le Temps, a Swiss newspaper, noting that Abacha was seeking to be acquitted. The Swiss authorities pursued Abba for six years before extraditing him from Germany in 2005. Nigeria sent Switzerland a request in 1999, the year after Abacha died, to help it recover some $2.2 billion the dictator is suspected of having siphoned from the treasury when he ruled from 1993 to 1998. Switzerland began investigating the Abacha family in 1999 and has handed back about $700 million to Nigeria.

Susan Boyle joins Lads from Lagos

Nigeria's Got Talent offers £1m booty

It's a hearty round of applause today for the Lads from Lagos for an anarchic, highly-entertaining return to our email inboxes.

We're obliged to reader Danny Caldwell for forwarding a missive suggestively entitled "Good News kindly download the Attachment from yahoo awards center", complete with a 419 first – a lovingly-crafted Word document.

It's fair to say that our scamming chums put plenty of thought and effort into their presentation, which kicks off by suggesting that an unholy alliance of Windows Live and Yahoo! has decided to hand out £6m to a half dozen lucky punters (click on the pic for a bigger version)...

The first page of the 419 document

Well, the random email addy award is an old trick, but the ne'er-do-wells have enlisted some heavyweight support to lend credibility to their likely tale of unexpected riches...

The second page, featuring Susan Boyle

Yes indeed, our very own SuBo is keeping a close eye on the juicy "Award Winning Fund", ably assisted by engineer John Fletcher. The latter is evidently taking time out from his job at BBC Research & Development, although we're not sure quite what Mr Paul Williams does when he's not dispensing cash to lucky winners...

We were going to ring him to ask, but then decided it probably wasn't a good idea. ®

Activists and human rights lawyers, led by the coordinator of Child Rights Protection Initiative (CPRI), Mrs. Grace Atim, were at the Benue State Police Command Headquarters, where the accused was detained at the weekend, insisting that prosecution must commence immediately.
The Guardian learnt that the girl (names withheld) had gone to the Nigeria Army School of Military Engineering (NASME), Hospital where the doctor had been deployed by the United Nations to conduct tests required by her school when she was molested.
According to the girl, the doctor, upon examining her private parts, claimed that she had serious infections that must be flushed out or she would be in critical medical condition. At this point, she said the accused directed her to follow him to the 'flushing' room behind the military hospital.
It was at the building behind the hospital, which turned out to be the official residence of the doctor that the student was violated.
She said that she reported the rape to her father, a professor with the Benue State University who in turn brought the matter before the NASME commandant.
The commandant arrested the doctor and handed him over to the police. Benue State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Mohammed, confirmed the incident. He said after interrogation, the doctor would be prosecuted.
In an interview, Mrs. Atim urged the police to prosecute the doctor speedily to serve as deterrent to other medical staff involved in rape cases.
She regretted increase in the rape of under-aged girls in the state, noting that CPRI is handling several of such cases. She added that the group has mobilised its lawyers to follow up the case to ensure that the medical doctor does not escape justice.

Corpers Messed Registration: INEC

As the voters’ registration continued on its fumbling note into day three yesterday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), attributed the inefficiency to low knowledge of the corps members who were deployed as registration officers. The Commission, while apologising to members of the public for the delay and general inadequacies attending the exercise across the federation, said “we are sorry but we will continue to improve.”

Featuring on a political programme, “Focus Nigeria”, the INEC National Commissioner in charge of Publicity, Prince Solomon Soyebi, lamented that the commission was not happy with the development but explained that the commission took it for granted that the corps members would know the basic operations of a computer, a belief, he said, turned out to be misplaced.

We assumed that these corps members should know how to operate a simple machine like the DDC machine in addition to the training they had but unfortunately, they disappointed us. We discovered they could not and many of them had to be battling with it unsuccessfully.

“These are graduates and we never expected it that any of them won’t be able to handle a computer but the reality was such that majority of them couldn’t and we had to shuffle them,” Soyebi added.
He also admitted that the upfront allowance the corps members were to be paid before the start of the exercise could not be paid due to tedious banking process, a development which also made the process of registration slow as many of them had nothing to eat during the exercise.

Soyebi, however, assured that the process would improve as the registration officers got used to the operation of the machines, adding that officials of the commission would be on hand to offer assistance to the registration officers to reduce the hiccups.
He also promised that the process of payment of the first installment of the corps members’ allowances would be fast tracked while other logistics would also be looked into with a view to addressing all observed lapses.

Meanwhile, the INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega, has urged the people to exercise patience with it saying the noticed initial inefficiencies would soon give way.
He urged prospective voters to go to the nearest units to them, and wait patiently for their turn but could leave and come back if they experienced delay since the exercise would last for two weeks.
Jega who spoke in Abuja, however, called on voters not to wait till the tail end of the registration to avoid rush.

"I warned them."Returning Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais did indeed let it be known that he wasn't going to hold back in skewering Hollywood's most famous celebrities. And, in what will undoubtedly be his last hosting gig for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (and, who knows, maybe any Stateside awards) he didn't disappoint. But in the process of making searingly funny jokes at more than just the obvious targets (Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson, the HFPA itself), the heat he put into the punch lines might have made him more of the story than the actual winners...And yet, it made for compelling -- if sometimes wince-inducing -- television. Given the staid lameness of most awards shows -- hello, Emmys -- at least he kept those who are not in the industry laughing uproariously. (His "I warned them" line came after a particularly funny joke about Hugh Hefner's new fiancee, complete with physical comedy and facial expressions).Gervais' biting lines were scattered at various stars (and movies like The Tourist), with not everyone taking kindly to the treatment. Bruce Willis seemed miffed to be called the father of Ashton Kutcher, Robert Downey Jr. seemed to take slight umbrage about his rehab past (before going into his own salacious and super speech), etc. Even when the jokes weren't directed at them, some stars took gentle swipes back, as when Tom Hanks, who just received a rave recitation of his career achievement from Gervais, protected Tim Allen, who received none.Gervais's jokes were so incendiary that when he went missing during the second half of the show, the Twitterverse lit up with suggestions that he'd been fired backstage. Clearly, Gervais had done so much damage entertaining the viewers at home (or appalling them, depending on their belief in decorum), that he became the story of the night. But so what? The Globes are considered one of the best, if not the best, awards show on television because of this feeling that anything goes and Champagne-fueled winners and presenters could say just about anything.
