Sunday, March 6, 2011 It was a gory and bizarre scene, just like in a fiction or acting in Okota, Isolo Lagos yesterday as a middle-aged man was caught by the police with the lifeless body of his friend in a drum. The body was chopped in small pieces to make it fit into the blue plastic drum that is like less than half of the height of an average adult. advertisement here Detectives from the Ago Police Station Okota, arrested a man, Israel Okafor Okereke who allegedly slaughtered his friend and dumped his body in the drum. Ogbonnaya Basil, the victim, was declared missing by his wife Mrs. Uzoma Ogbonnaya. It was a pitiable sight at the police station as sympathisers and the angry crowd gathered at the premises with their noses covered to behold the body of the deceased infested with flies and maggots in the drum. When Saturday Sun met the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Dan Iyamah for information on the incident, he said all facts finding on the incident should be handled by the State Police Public Relations Officer. However, a reliable source who would not disclose his identity revealed that the wife of the deceased, Mrs. Ogbonnaya who lives at Ago reported to the police station that she called her husband the previous day to know where he was as it was getting late, and he said he was at Israel’s house in the Omiyale area of Ejigbo. The following morning, she called and the line was not through. So she had to visit Israel’s house in the evening to know what the matter was. The deceased was said to be an in-law to the man that allegedly butchered him, and both are from Ebonyi State. during Mrs. Uzoma’s visit, Israel denied knowledge of Ogbonnaya’s whereabouts but Uzoma insisted that her husband told her the previous day he was at his place. Because Israel insisted he never knew where his friend and in-law could be found, Mrs. Ogbonnaya had to stay put there and eventually spent the night since it was already late to go back. The following morning, she reported the case at the police station and detectives were sent to arrest Israel to confirm or deny Basil’s whereabouts. He still insisted he never knew what became of his friend on police interrogation. Israel denied any knowledge of seeing Basil. But when the detectives visited his home, they spotted bloodstains all over the place - on handkerchiefs, pillow, and the floor. He could not give the police a reasonable answer for the bloodstains. After an initial refusal to answer more questions, he buckled after a lengthy interrogation. First, he said that some people in suit came to his place and shot Basil but later changed his story that he alone committed the heinous crime because the deceased owed him N1.5m. He said he used a machete on his victim and in-law. After his confession, he took the policemen to a place on Ejigbo road where he neatly packed the corpse inside a drum. The distance between the scene of crime to where the drum was found was up to 10 kilometres, said the source. The suspect who runs a big boutique on No. 131 Ago Palace Way Okota took the policemen there to conduct a search in case of any other hidden incriminating evidence. Incidentally, a sticker pasted at the back of the suspect’s red Mercedes Benz 190 reads: This year, money shall be my servant. It was also scooped that Basil helped in setting up the shop and assisted him to China to buy goods. The police were showered with praises for unravelling the murder, which usually takes eternity to crack in Nigeria. The PPRO, DSP Samuel Junaid, confirmed the incident and added that the suspect has been transferred to the State CID in Panti Street.

Three persons were killed in central Nigeria on Monday when soldiers opened fire to quell a fight between Christian and Muslim youth over voter registration for April elections, police and witnesses said.

Soldiers opened fire at a secondary school being used as a voter registration centre in the city of Jos after a group of Christian youth tried to prevent Muslim electoral commission officials from delivering voting materials, witnesses said.

Schools across Nigeria have been closed for the voter registration exercise, which began on Saturday, and there were no children at the venue at the time.

“We tried to pacify them but they grew wild,” Plateau State police commissioner, Abdulrahman Akano told reporters..

“They started stoning the soldiers and the soldiers had no choice than to open fire on them in self-defence,” he said, adding that two of the youth were killed by the gunfire.

One electoral official was lynched and burned, bringing the death toll to three, while two soldiers were wounded, a spokesman for a joint military and police taskforce said.

Plateau State, of which Jos is the capital, lies in the Middle Belt where the mostly Muslim north meets the largely Christian south. It has seen years of ethnic tensions and is a major potential flashpoint ahead of the April elections.

The latest unrest brings the death toll in and around Jos to more than 100 since Christmas, when there were a series of bomb blasts and subsequent clashes in the city.

Some members of the Christian community have accused the security forces of backing the mostly Muslims Hausa-Fulani ethnic group during the unrest. The rank-and-file of the army are from both religions but senior officers stationed in the region are predominantly Muslim, they say. The military denies the accusations.

Hundreds of people died in fighting between Muslim and Christian mobs in the Middle Belt a year ago and there have been frequent outbreaks of violence since then.

The tension is rooted in decades of resentment between indigenous groups, mostly Christian or animist, who are vying for control of fertile farmlands and for economic and political power with migrants and settlers from the north.

President Goodluck Jonathan, who is from the southern Niger Delta, won the ruling party primary last week and is considered the frontrunner in the presidential race on April 9. But his candidacy is controversial because of an agreement in the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) that power should rotate between the north and the south every two terms, a rhythm which his victory would interrupt.

His main election rivals are all northerners and there are fears that the national debate could become polarised around north-south rivalries, potentially leading to further election-related violence in the Middle Belt and other areas.

Military kills Abia kidnap kingpin

The suspected leader of kidnap gangs in Abia State, Obioma Nwankwo, popularly known as Osisikankwu, was yesterday killed by the military task force deployed to the state by the federal government. The news of his killing led to wild jubilation among residents of Aba and Umuahia. His death marked another success in the efforts of the military task force to rid the state of gangs that have made life difficult for the people of the state and almost destroyed social and economic activities in the area. Deputy army public relations officer and spokesperson of the task force, Sagir Musa, confirmed the death of Mr. Nwankwo yesterday. He said the alleged kidnapper was shot dead at Obokwe market, in Ukwa West Local Government Council, by a joint police and military patrol team.

A broken myth..

Mr. Musa said that the military had laid an ambush for the kidnapper for some days after they learnt of his presence in the bush near the market. The kidnapper’s killing brought to an end a myth surrounding him in Aba that the man could neither be caught nor killed. The commissioner of police in Abia State, Jonathan Johnson, also told NEXT that the body of the gang leader will be displayed to reassure residents of the state that he was truly dead.

Another source said the task force got closer to Mr Nwankwo two days ago when his accomplice who used to supply him arms was arrested. After his arrest, arms including two GPMGs, three RPG bombers, 20 pieces of RPG bombs, 93 empty magazines of AK47 guns, 150 litre keg filled with live ammunition and eight pieces of AK47 guns, were recovered from the accomplice. Mr. Musa said last night that the body of the notorious kidnapper had been taken to Umuahia to be shown to government officials and would be publicly paraded today in the city. Hundreds of people trooped to the military barracks in Aba last night waiting to see the body, but they left disappointed when the body was not presented. Mr Nwankwo, who was arrested a few months ago, was inexplicably released by the police and since then, had tormented the people, who ascribed daredevil abilities to him. Mr Musa described Osisikankwu’s killing as a landmark achievement of the military operations in the state and promised that the task force will not relent until it flushes out the remaining kidnappers in the area.

State of anarchy

Kidnapping in Abia State reached new heights on July 11th when four journalists and their driver were kidnapped on their way from Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, after attending the National Executive Council meeting of the Nigeria Union of Journalists. Among the journalists was Wahab Alabi Oba, the chairman of the Lagos State Council of the NUJ. The Senate president, David Mark, subsequently demanded that a state of emergency be declared in the state. He also advocated the application of ‘jungle solution’ to the rising level of kidnappings and armed robbery to serve as a deterrent to others, saying the rule of law could not be applied in a jungle situation. Senior officials of the International Police Organisation (INTERPOL) were invited by the federal government to help track down the kidnappers. The journalists were later released although an initial ransom demand of N250 million was not paid...

A few days before the nation’s 50th independence anniversary, gunmen seized 15 primary school children on their way to school. The abductors had contacted the owner of the private school and demanded a N20 million ransom before the children could be released. However, the students were set free on the day of the nation’s independence anniversary. Mr. Nwankwo’s gang was reportedly responsible for the kidnappings.

Man kills himself during live internet broadcast

A 24-year-old man committed suicide live on the internet, Japanese police said Friday.

Some online chat forum users egged on the man after he posted that he was considering suicide, local media reported. Some chatters urged him not to, while others said he was lying, local media said.

The man started live-streaming his own hanging. Viewers called police.

The suicide was reported to police in the northern Japanese city of Sendai about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, said the vice chief of the Sendai North Police.

Officers found the man at his home, after he had hanged himself. They determined his address with help from internet chat sites.

Police released no further information, citing privacy protections in cases of suicide.

An image has been floating around cyberspace, showing a person hanging from what looks like a fabric belt, looped across a horizontal pole or rod.

The streaming service Ustream said the image was not doctored and that it shows the man who killed himself....

Ustream removed the image after users flagged it, said spokesman Fumihiro Ito.

The company planned to beef up monitoring of user content following the suicide, Ito said.

Crocodile on plane kills 19 passengers

678867-croc.jpgA STOWAWAY crocodile on a flight escaped from its carrier bag and sparked an onboard stampede that caused the flight to crash, killing 19 passengers and crew.

The croc had been hidden in a passenger's sports bag - allegedly with plans to sell it - but it tore loose and ran amok, sparking panic.

A stampede of terrified passengers caused the small aircraft to lose balance and tip over in mid-air during an internal flight in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The unbalanced load caused the aircraft, on a routine flight from the capital, Kinshasa, to the regional airport at Bandundu, to go into a spin and crash into a house.

A lone survivor from the Let 410 plane told the astonishing tale to investigators.

Ironically the crocodile also survived the crash but was later killed with a machete by rescuers sifting through the wreckage.

British pilot Chris Wilson, 39, from Shurdington, near Cheltenham, Glocs was acting as the plane's first officer alongside Belgian pilot Danny Philemotte, 62, who was owner of the plane's operator Filair.

The plane smashed into an empty house just a few hundred metres from its destination.

"According to the inquiry report and the testimony of the only survivor, the crash happened because of a panic sparked by the escape of a crocodile hidden in a sports bag,” news organisation Jeune Afrique reported.

"One of the passengers had hidden the animal, which he planned to sell, in a big sports bag, from which the reptile escaped as the plane began its descent into Bandundu.

"The terrified air hostess hurried towards the cockpit, followed by the passengers."

The plane was then sent off-balance "despite the desperate efforts of the pilot", said the report.

"The crocodile survived the crash before being cut up with a machete."

The plane was a Czech-made Let L-410 Turbolet, one of more than 1,100 produced as short-range transport aircraft and used mainly for passenger services...

Unknown people had dropped two single barrel guns at the back of the toilet of the Primary School, in Oke-Ijebu. The students, who were playing during the break time, discovered the guns and started playing with them, thinking they were toys. In the process, one of the boys mistakenly pulled the trigger and killed his playmate in the process. The shooter also sustained injuries in the process.

The agitated residents of the area trooped to the school premises to confirm the incident, with parents expressing their worries about the condition of pupils in the school. Rivers: Jeep crashes into restaurant, kills nine

RESIDENTS of Onne in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State could not control their tears at the scene of an accident that claimed nine lives on Tuesday..

The accident occurred when a jeep rammed into a makeshift restaurant, killing all the nine people who were at the time on their lunch break.

Apart from the nine persons that died on the spot, four injured others were rushed to the hospital by policemen on patrol.

The incident prompted some traders within the area to close their shops and moved towards the scene of the accident.

An eyewitness account revealed that the driver, who was driving a black Infinity jeep from Onne, suddenly swerved off the road and rammed into the canteen.

The driver, according to an eyewitness, took to his heels and abandoned his vehicle at the scene.

It was gathered that the driver, who was on a top speed before the accident, lost control of the vehicle.

"The accident was serious and those who were within the area where it happened initially scampered for safety and only came back when they were sure it was an accident.

"We did not see the driver and I learnt he ran away after seeing the level of damage caused by the accident. Nine persons died and I learnt some were also injured," an eyewitness told our correspondent.

Confirming the incident, the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Rita Inoma-Abbey, told our correspondent that the vehicle involved in the fatal accident had no plate number.

Corporal kills sergeant at check point

Tragedy struck Sunday morning along the busy Benin-Akure Road when a police corporal allegedly shot his superior during a heated argument at a police checkpoint at NIFOR junction.

Eyewitnesses said the police corporal shot his superior at close range over an alleged disagreement on the misconduct of the corporal in the course of his carrying out his duties at the checkpoint.

Mobile police officers prevented reporters from taking photographs of the killer policeman, who erupted into tears after the incident.

He was, however, disarmed by his colleagues, who later handcuffed him and took him to Eki Adolor Police Station.

One of the officers, Osaro Igbinovia, said, "The sergeant was questioning the corporal, but we could not hear what they were saying and the next thing we heard was a gun shot and the sergeant fell down and died immediately."

The body of the police sergeant was later removed and taken to an undisclosed mortuary.

A visit to the office of the state police public relations officer, Peter Ogboi, for comment on the incident, proved abortive, as he was said to be away at a meeting and could not be reached on his phone..

The young man SUNDAY PUNCH also gathered moments after killing his wife and child equally killed himself.

Residents of Nung Anya Street in Uyo are still confused over what would have made Batta embark on the killing spree.

The incident, our correspondent learnt, took place last Tuesday.

Narrating the ugly episode to SUNDAY PUNCH, on Friday, the landlord of No. 23, Nung Anya Street, where all the deceased were living before their death, Mr. James Atakpa, said the incident came to him as a shock.

Atakpa described Batta as a gentleman, who was known as an evangelist and wondered why he decided to carry out the gruesome act.

The landlord explained that he had already gone to bed after taking his medication on the fateful day when he heard a scream within his compound.

"Initially, I thought armed robbers had struck, but when I eventually came out, I saw a crowd gathered in front of my house. I later saw some people forcing the door to Batta's room open.

"When that was done, what happened was something I could not stand to behold. I was later told that one of my tenants had killed his four-week-old baby, his wife and himself.

"I am very ill as you can see and that was why I left the scene of the incident so that it will not worsen my condition. The man and his baby were found dead with blood stains all over the place," Atakpa stated.

He added that the evangelist's wife, who was initially breathing was rushed to the hospital, where she later died the following day after losing so much blood.

Atakpa said he was told by those at the scene that Batta stabbed his wife before hitting the head of the baby against the wall.

He also disclosed that Batta was found lying helplessly on the floor with deep laceration on his neck, while a part of his stomach was ripped open.

He said the woman's brother, who was shocked on hearing the incident, immediately called in the police, who came in and took the corpses away.

Speaking on the matter, the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Walter Rugbere, described the incident as an open and closed matter, adding that after investigation, it was alleged that Batta killed his wife, baby before committing suicide.

Rugbere added that some people alleged that Batta took the action when he suspected that his wife was cheating on him.

"There is nothing we can do about it because the man that was at the centre of the whole incident has already killed himself. It is an open and close case," the police

By Femi Ogbonnikan, CORRESPONDENT, Lagos..

Hope Nkechi Okafor made these disclosures when she was paraded before newsmen at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti Street, Yaba, Lagos, on Monday, March 8, 2010.

The 26-year-old suspect, currently in detention, admitted knowing the deceased, Biodun Samuel, popularly called ‘Abbey’ as a regular and familiar client at their brothel, Nice Time Hotel, located at Iyana Ipaja, an outskirt of Lagos.

“Abbey was a nice man. Whenever I cooked foods he would eat from them. Virtually, everybody in the hotel knew him,” offered the Oboh, Imo State-born suspect.

But last Monday, March 1, 2010, at about 12a.m., Hope, who until the incident operated as a prostitute at the brothel, stabbed the cobbler to death with a broken bottle. “On that fateful day, Abbey walked into the hotel and ignored me where I was sitting to compliment me. The next thing, he went to the room which is next to mine and knocked the door. Initially, I did not want to say anything, but I took courage and told him that the person staying in the next room had a visitor and he should not disturb them. The lady occupant of the next room just joined us and I do not know her name. He asked, ‘what concerns you? But I told him that the person he had come to see was with me, discussing together before she went in, to attend to her customer. He did not take to the advice and when he had no response, he faced me. Instead, he rose up his hand and rained a dirty slap on my face and subsequently, on my mouth. I became furious and broke a bottle of soft-drink I was drinking before he came in, and I stabbed him on his left arm. He fell down and bled until he was rushed by his friends, who were also regular callers at our hotel to a nearby hospital for treatment. It was later I learnt he had passed on, but I never meant to kill him,” she narrated.

She continued, “Boys, who were around, were attracted by the incident and they descended heavily on me. They beat me white and black until I was rescued by ‘Aji White,’ the hotel’s ticketer. He rushed me to the director’s office where I was kept for few hours until the dust settled. It was from the office the news filtered to me that Abbey had died. Also, it was inside the office that detectives came to pick me up and whisked me to Gowon Estate Divisional Police Station. And from the station, I was brought down to this place (SCID, Panti Street, Yaba),” she narrated.

Recalling how she joined the trade about eight months ago, she said, “I grew up in Benin, immediately after my secondary school education and subsequently, learnt a vocational trade in hairdressing. I was convinced that I would be brought to Lagos to work as a cook in a restaurant by one Aunty Evelyn, but the offer later turned out to be prostitution. I was staying in Benin, Edo State capital but soon had a problem because I took in, for one Lucky in year 2007. The man refused to accept responsibility for the pregnancy and soon gave birth to a baby boy. The hardship was too much. To eke out a living was hard before I was introduced to Aunty Evelyn by a sister who promised to assist by taking me to Lagos. Two of us, including a lady (names withheld) were brought down to Lagos, but what we met on ground was different from our discussion. We were taken to the ‘Nice Time’ Hotel, Iyana Ipaja and conducted round everywhere within the brothel. When I could not hold my breath I had to call the attention of the Aunty to it and she advised that if we did not like the job we should arrange on how to return to Benin. We had no money on us and decided to settle for the job. We were given a permanent room each in the hotel, where we attended to our customers. The first two months, Aunty Evelyn would collect all amount realised except that she was only providing for our meals. Soon afterwards, she relocated to Benin while we stayed behind. And from everyman that slept with me, I collected N1, 000. At least, I made N6, 000 from the trade on a daily basis,” she added.

On whether her parents were aware when she took to prostitution, the suspect stated, “My parents were not aware until this incident occurred. They thought I was working in a good restaurant in Lagos, making good money, which I sent home to them on a regular basis. I left my village immediately I completed my secondary education in year 2002 and settled in Benin. My intention was to ensure that, I worked hard and became successful in life, because my parents are poor,” said Hope.

Frank Mba, Lagos State Police Command Public Relations Officer, while parading the suspect corroborated the confession of the 26-year-old whore whom she said stabbed the 32-year-old victim in his left arm, with a broken bottle.

According to the Superintendent of Police (SP), Biodun gave up the ghost when he was being rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

It was gathered that the corpse of the cobbler was taken to an undisclosed mortuary in Lagos, where it was established through postmortem examination that he died as a result of a stab inflicted on him by the prostitute.

He added that the homicide detectives at the SCID, Panti Street, Yaba, had completed investigation into the matter, while the case file is yet to be sent to the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Alausa, Ikeja, for advice before the suspect would be arraigned before a competent law court

She confessed that she took a razor blade and inflicted the injuries on the deceased. "I never knew it would turn out this way. I am not happy that she died. It was just a minor disagreement," the suspect said. The command's spokesman, Mr. Frank Mba, said that policemen attached to Tolu Division were currently investigating the case.
