THE National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has again saved two Nigerians from capital punishment in Hong Kong and Malaysia in relation to drug trafficking offences.

The suspects, Dunu Samuel Okwuchukwu, a 39-year-old international businessman ingested 1.110 kilogrammes of cocaine on his way to Hong Kong while Mmaduekwe Christopher, a 32-year-old auto parts dealer in Dakar, Senegal hid 1.385 kilogrammes of methamphetamine in his sandals on his way to Malaysia.

Worried by the daring nature of persons smuggling narcotic drugs to countries with capital punishment for drug trafficking, the agency is seeking anti-drug enlightenment fund to enable it to intensify campaign programmes across the country.

According to the chairman of the agency, Ahmadu Giade, the agency needs fund for aggressive national campaign.

"The situation where young men and women now see drug trafficking as an escape route from poverty is bad and unacceptable. We have arrested many of them at the airports and border posts with drugs going to countries with capital punishment for drug culprits."

He explained that the latest arrests further underscored their call for proactive measures to tackle the problem headlong and protect the lives of citizens.

"We need funds to execute enlightenment campaign programmes. A robust campaign will go a long way in re-orientating drug traffickers on the need to shun the criminal act," Giade stated.

NDLEA Airport Commander, Hamza Umar, said that drug traffickers planning to use the Lagos airport would continue to be arrested and prosecuted.

There is indeed no art in knowing the mind’s construction on the face. If there were, 28-year-old Mrs. Goodness Ogbonnaya would have known that her cousin, Israel Okafor Okereke, who had helped her search for her missing husband, Basil Ogbonnaya, was the same man who killed him.

However, the bond the couple shared helped solve the mystery, recounts Goodness, the mother of seven-month-old Precious (their baby, who would never know her father, slain at the prime age of 31).

Basil was a businessman selling foodstuff at Shop 23 Milaco Plaza along Ago Palace Way in Okota, Lagos. On March 1, he had gone to meet with business associates at Iddo and Daleko respectively, Goodndess recalls. She had called her husband’s telephone number to know if he was on his way home about 6pm but his phone was switched off. Her husband later called back at 6.43pm to inform her that he was at Okafor’s place.

“I felt he was probably discussing with him and didn’t want to be disturbed. By 10pm, his phones were still switched off and he wasn’t back. We kept awake till about 2am when I asked one of the boys working for him to go and lock the door. I had hoped he slept over there and that he would call me first thing in the morning. They are friends. They had known each other before he married me. In fact, my husband helped him to secure the accommodation he lives in at No. 17 Omiyale Street, Ejigbo, where he killed him.”

But alas! the call never came and Goodness had reason to be alarmed. So she called Okafor, who denied seeing Basil or that he slept in his house. “When I didn’t see my husband in the morning and with his phones still switched off, I called Okafor to find out about my husband. But he said he had not seen him; that the last time he did was on February 28. Then he came over to our place. I told him my husband had not returned home, which was unlike him, and that I wanted to check hospitals, and he followed me.”

Searching with the suspect

That day, Goodness and Okafor combed the accident and emergency wards and mortuaries of hospitals, from Isolo to Gbagada and back to Ejigbo till dusk.

“A friend suggested I go back to Ejigbo to search for him since it was the last place I heard from him. By the time we did this it was late, and somehow my spirit was telling me to sleep over at his house. Before then I had told my brothers of the situation. He initially objected to my sleeping in his house. But following persuasion from my elder brother, he agreed, and said he had to come to Ago to pick his sister first, which he did. When we got to his house, he put me in one of the rooms and brought out a pillow from his room for me to use.

Pillowcase clue uncovered by seven-month-old baby

Probably stressed by the events of the day, Goodness’ seven-month-old baby, Precious, wouldn’t sleep and was playfully pulling at the bed sheet. Unknown to her infant mind, she had uncovered a clue that led them to her father’s murderer.

“I put my baby on the bed and she was pulling at the bed sheet. Then she pulled the pillow and I noticed blood stains on the pillowcase, and I became suspicious. So I pulled off the pillowcase and put it in my baby’s pampers.

Bloodstains on the wall

“I couldn’t sleep, so I began praying. Earlier, I had been asked what I wanted to eat but I said nothing. I had no appetite for food but I asked for tea. Not long after I began to purge and had to go to the toilet. There I saw splashes of blood on the wall and I took the picture with my phone. The sister whom I begged to sleep with us in the room was close to me, so she heard the clicking sound from my phone and turned. But I pretended as I came out as if I hadn’t done anything.

“About 5.30am, when I got up to prepare a bath for my baby, I saw my husband’s handkerchief he used the day I last saw him in the wash hand basin. It was stained with blood.”

Like one who had murdered sleep, Okafor also barely slept as he decided to sleep in his sitting room instead of his bedroom. Goodness’ cries and prayers unsettled him such that he came to her door severally to inquire what was wrong. In the morning when Goodness ran out of credit, he offered to go and buy for her while she gave her baby a bath.

“It was when he went out that I sneaked into his bedroom to confirm my suspicion. There I saw blood splattered on the wall. His sister was trying to catch some sleep because of my disturbance in the night. When I saw that, I called my brothers and told them. I also kept the handkerchief with the pillowcase I had seen earlier.

“By the time he came back, my brothers were in the area. So he left the house again to pick them. But my brothers came through another route and I showed them what I had seen.” When Okafor returned, she begged him to take her to Ago Police Station where she had earlier lodged a complaint and was told to wait for 24 hours before declaring him missing. He declined on the pretext that he was tired but later obliged after some persuasion.

Looking for more clues, Goodness asked to put her umbrella and bag in his car boot, which was also splattered with blood. But she pretended as if she saw nothing. “When we got to the station, I said I wanted to make a statement that my husband told me he was in his house the last time he called me. But the policeman in charge of such cases said I would be indicting him and there were penalties for such if my claims were untrue. I replied him that I didn’t mind.”

It would however take some going back and forth and tendering the evidence she had on her before the police took her serious and took Okafor in for questioning. He still denied seeing Basil and said they should take him anywhere, that he was innocent. “It was when I tendered the stained handkerchief and pillowcase that I was allowed to make my statement and a search warrant issued. The DPO instructed that Okafor should be put behind the counter.”

Okafor later confessed that he committed the heinous crime and escorted the policemen to search his house.

‘It’s rat blood on my wall’

“When the policemen got there and saw the blood stain on the wall, he initially said it was a rat that he killed. They later saw his bloodstained mattress, which he had kept outside and the rug. He told them he had drugged my husband before killing him with an axe around midnight (and I remember seeing that axe in the house and had asked him what he was doing with an axe in the city when he was not in the village).

He said he cut him first in the head, which woke him up, and probably a struggle ensued (explaining the blood stains) between them. So he broke his two legs with the axe to demobilise him and finished him off with a cutlass. He claims it was a mistake but because he injured him so much, decided to finish it…”

Though not shedding tears as she recounted the gory details to our reporter, she was filled with anguish as she measured her words, stopping and shaking her head at intervals.

Was she aware that her cousin had any evil antecedent?

“Somehow, I suspected so because of his lifestyle. We would see him for some time and he would disappear again. Because of his lifestyle, my husband had to dissociate himself from him at some point but he kept coming around. I never knew he could be this wicked to kill my husband.”

Contrary to the suspect’s claim that the late Basil was owing him some amount of money, Goodness said rather it was Okafor that was indebted to her husband.

“I’m not aware of any quarrel between them but I remember my husband said he had borrowed him money, which he promised to pay back by July this year. He borrowed him late last year when he was about to do his wedding. My husband said it was N3.5million. He didn‘t tell me he had any quarrel with Okafor.”

So what was Okafor’s motive for killing Basil and dumping him in a drum in his area (NNPC Ejigbo)? Was it because he felt he couldn’t pay back despite the fact that he runs a men’s clothing store at 131 Ago Palace Way, Okota, or could it be for ritual purposes as speculated by many, given the stickers on his car (‘This year money shall be my servant’ and ‘2011- My year of double blessings’)?

Police sources say no part of Basil’s body was missing. Why, why, why, is the question Goodness is asking, and Baby Precious would also, when she is old enough.

For faking the death of her former husband, Mr. Bayo Akinsete, has divorced his wife, Kehinde. Akinsete, 48, who resides at Odongunyan, Ikorodu, Lagos State, had dragged Kehinde to an Ikorodu Customary Court, seeking the dissolution of the 10-year-old marriage.

He had told the court that Kehinde informed him that her former husband, whom she claimed she divorced had died before Akinsete fell in love with her.
Akinsete said that the union was blessed with a son, Joshua, adding that he was surprised when Kehinde, who had gone on a pilgrimage to a mountain within the country, sometime in 2008, sent a text message to him that she would be going to her former husband.
Akinsete said, "One day when she went to pilgrimage, she sent a text to me that she was going back to her former husband. When I received the message, I was so amazed that I had read the text many times to be sure of what I was reading. I was totally at lost because this was the same woman who told me that her former divorced husband had died long ago. The woman went away with our son, Joshua.
"She also was in the habit of changing schools for Joshua without good reason and this could adversely affect his education. I am no more interested in the marriage."
Akinsete requested that Joshua should be in Kehinde's custody for proper care as he is a man and had not remarried...
However, Kehinde, 40, a midwife, said she only changed Joshua's school once when she observed that the school's standard was low.
She denied faking her former husband's death, saying that her former spouse had gone to a war and did not return on time. Kehinde said that she decided to remarry.
She said, "Akinsete and I started living together happily. We were blessed with a son. But one day, I got a revelation in my church that I should re-examine myself. I was disturbed when the revelation persisted. I discussed it with Akinsete and told him that we could no longer live as couple as my conscience was pricking me about the revelation.
"We even afterwards stopped love making even though we were still sleeping on the same bed. When the fear of the revelation became unbearable, I moved out of the matrimonial home and sent a text message to Akinsete that I had returned to my former husband."
The Acting President of the court, Mr. Nosiru Isiaka, granted the dissolution of the marriage and ordered Akinsete to always provide through the court, before 5th of every month N2,500 as alimony for Joshua's upkeep. This amount, he explained, excluded educational and medical bills. He also warned parties to keep the peace.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Dimeji Bankole; and Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, on Wednesday escaped death when a helicopter in which they were travelling from the Ondo State capital, Akure, to Abeokuta, Ogun State crashlanded.

THE PUNCH learnt that the helicopter developed engine problems mid-air and lost contact with the control tower at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos. The situation forced the pilot of the chartered helicopter to land in a primary school a few kilometres from Abeokuta.

The loss of contact with the control tower was said to have caused apprehension at the airport. The helicopter had been expected to return to Lagos, from where it began the journey on Wednesday morning.

It was learnt that apart from both personalities and the pilot, there were two security aides aboard the helicopter. A source said the craft landed in Abule-Odo, Obafe in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area, adding that they were rescued by a passing motorist.

When contacted, Bankole’s Special Adviser on Communications, Chief Kayode Odunaro, confirmed the incident, but said both men were not hurt in the crash...

Odunaro, who spoke with one of our correspondents at 10.34pm, said they were rescued by their aides, who rushed in a convoy to the location of the crash.

He said, “Apparently, there was an incident. The Speaker and the governor were on board the helicopter. It was a helicopter incident and they landed in a village five minutes’ drive from Abeokuta along Ajebo Road.

“We thank God that both of them are safe. The Speaker has been holding a meeting with a youth group since 8pm.”

Detectives are hunting a transgender woman in connection with the death of a British student who died after a botched 'butt enhancement' operation.

Claudia Aderotimi, 20, is believed to have had the illegal procedure carried out by an unlicensed medical practioner in a hotel room in Philadelphia after meeting her in a plastic surgery chat room.

The transgender woman, in her 30s, had a similar procedure herself as part of a sex change operation to become a woman.

Police have established the identity of the suspect after raiding the home of a 'fixer' in New Jersey who had introduced the London-based student to the 'doctor'.

She is said to be well-known among the Africa-American community in Philadelphia, where 'butt enhancements' are popular.

A police source told the Evening Standard: 'There is a thriving trade in these sort of procedures and the injectors travel from state to state.'

Legitimate surgical techniques including silicone implants cost around £7,000, leading some to seek out cheaper injections. The procedure is illegal in the U.S. and UK.

If convicted, the suspect faces involuntary manslaughter charges which could lead to 10 years in jail.

Miss Aderotimi have believed a 'bigger booty' would help her wish to appear in more music videos, according to her distraught friends.

The aspiring dancer - stagename Carmella London - was dropped from one shoot because directors discovered she had been wearing padded trousers to help enlarge her bottom.

Talent scout Tee Ali, who met the Thames Valley University student when she filmed a video, told The Sun: 'The problem was she didn't have no butt, and she wanted a butt.

'She went to audition for one video shoot wearing fake booty pants and she got all the attention.

'But when they found out it was fake she didn't get asked back.'

Miss Aderotimi developed chest pains and struggled for breath 12 hours after she had the illegal silicone injections at the budget hotel.

She was rushed to hospital, but could not be saved.

Victim: Claudia Aderotimi, 20, died of a heart attack after having buttock-enhancing injections
CARMELLA CLAUDIYAH also known as Claudia Aderotimi - A British student has died of a heart attack after travelling to the U.S. for an operation to give her more shapely buttocks.

Botched: The 20-year-old died after the silicone leaked into her bloodstream, resulting in heart failure

A preliminary examination found the silicone filler had leaked into her bloodstream, leading to heart failure.

Detectives are investigating whether she was treated with cheaper 'industrial' silicone, normally used as a sealant, rather than the medical-grade material used in breast implants.

It was not the first time she had undergone the procedure. She is believed to have been treated in November and the latest injection on Monday may have been a 'top-up'.

She had travelled from London to Philadelphia with three friends for the treatment, thought to have been an early present for her 21st birthday.

Buttock enhancement surgery is becoming popular in the U.S., among women who aspire to the shapely curves of Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce and singer Nicki Minaj.

Minaj has become almost as famous for her posterior as for her voice, and rumours have spread across the web that the Massive Attack singer underwent surgery or uses pads to boost her bum, especially on urban gossip sites such as Bossip and mediatakeout.com. She denies having had surgery.

The illusion of a larger backside has become increasingly more fashionable among young women since the rise of the 'Hip Hop Honey' phenomenon.

A bigger behind has become almost a prerequisite for any aspiring dancer wanting to make it on the music video scene.

But the hip hop industry has come under fire for objectifying women in music videos where dancers - or Hip Hop Honeys - chasing fame can often leave themselves open to financial and sexual exploitation.

And in their desperation to beat off the competition, many resort to surgery to get ahead.

'Top up' procedures are only legal when the silicone gel is contained and sealed within an implant. But illegal injections of the material are also widely available from unlicensed back-room medics.

Last night one expert said having a direct injection of silicone gel – long outlawed in the U.S. and Britain, even for breast surgery – is 'like playing Russian roulette'.

One of Miss Aderotimi's friends is said to have had the same procedure but survived. Experts warned the silicone could still prove lethal for her in the future if not removed.

Last night more than a dozen distraught friends and family gathered at Miss Aderotimi's home in Hackney, East London.

Her sister Vivian was in tears as she said: 'We found out on Tuesday. We're still in shock. We need to think about what we have to do.'

Miss Aderotimi's mother, a healthcare assistant at Homerton Hospital in East London, said she was too upset to speak about her daughter's death.

Miss Aderotimi had the buttock injections on Monday – thought to have cost around £1,300 – while her friend had the same procedure along with a hip enhancement treatment.

The 'doctor' who injected the silicone left soon after and was not there when Miss Aderotimi began complaining of chest pains.

Yesterday detectives raided the home of a woman they believed set up the illegal operation.

Computer files, emails and telephone records were seized from the house in Bergen County, New Jersey.

Emails from Miss Aderotimi arranging the procedure were among the material seized, but police said no formal arrests had yet been made.

Dr Rajiv Grover, president-elect of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, said: 'Buttock augmentation isn't a very commonly done procedure here, which is probably why these girls have resorted to going abroad.

'If correctly done, it involves implanting solid silicone implants into the buttock just like breast implants.

'The correct procedure would be done in a fully equipped, sterile surgical theatre in a hospital and the patient would be fully anaesthetised.'

The Uche I knew couldn't have killed himself - Chukwu

By Onochie Anibeze

The police in Dallas, USA have made a u-turn on the death of former Super Eagles star, Uche Okafor.

Victor Ugo, Vice Chairman of Nigerians In Diaspora in the Americas, said yesterday that the police have withdrawn from their position of suicide being the cause of death to "inconclusive evidence." The police also added that "investigation is ongoing."

This followed the strong representation made in Dallas by the Nigerian Consulate in Atlanta in protest against the shoddy investigation the police have so far made on the death of the former Nigerian star who was found hanging in his house at Little Elm in Texas, January 6, 2011.

Anthony Ogbe of the Nigerian consulate had spent two days visiting Uche's family and the police in Dallas and after his investigations he mounted pressure on the police to carry out thorough investigation on the circumstances surrounding Uche's death. He was said to have expressed disappointment on the police investigation and was sad that even fingerprints on doors and other areas including Uche's body were not taken when they took the body away...

"The Nigerian community here feels that the police were lackadaisical on their investigations because no American was involved as Uche was married to a Nigerian too," Ugo said, adding "our organisation and the entire Nigerian community here give the Nigerian Consulate credit for the pressure on the police to do a good job and to let them knowthat they have not done well."

Ugo also said that Samson Siasia's wife, Sandra joined hands with the Nigerian Consulate in what has compelled the police to realise their poor investigation, making them "change the cause of death as suicide to inconclusive evidence.

Spokesman of the Okafor family, Ugochukwu Nwaokorie said before Saturday's police u-turn that the Dallas Police had released the body and said that they were done with it and that result of their autopsy would be released later.

"There are common things a body that dies of hanging exhibits. There could be evidence of human faeces from the anus, there could also be urine and the tongue could be thrusting out. None of these signs was found on Uche's body. We don't believe that Uche hanged himself. . We want the police to do a thorough job," Nwaokorie said.

Ugo added yesterday that another puzzle was the fact that Uche's spinal chord was found broken.

"If he died of hanging the neck could be broken and not down the spines. The police said that they have seen so many features of suicide by hanging and could not be conclusive on the fact that Uche's body did not show any of the said features.

"We'll stay on top of this case as far as we can. It is only unfortunate that the police did not take fingerprints when they were supposed to do so and with many visitors to the scene now we don't know what they can make of such exercise now. They have simply not done a good job," Ugo of the Association Nigerians In Diaspora in the Americas said.

The Uche I knew couldn't have killed himself - Chukwu

Christian Chukwu, the man who coached Uche Okafor severally has added voice to that of Aminu Maigari, Nigeria Football Federation President who charged the US police to carry out thorough investigation on the death of the former Nigerian star.

"The Uche Okafor I knew would not hang himself for any reason," Chukwu said at the weekend. He, along with Clemens Westerhof coached the 1994 Tunisia Nations Cup winning squad and the USA 1994 team. He played great matches in Tunisia.

"Uche was doing well with his car business. There are Lebanese that he supplies cars to in Nigeria and he dealt on big cars. We rode in one of them during the NFF elections that he witnessed in Abuja. He drove me around in Abuja and discussed issues.

He was doing well. He never liked controversy or any kind of trouble. He was humble and peace-loving. He was just a pleasant human being and couldn't have taken his life for anything. I don't believe that he hanged himself. The police should investigate the matter properly,"Chukwu said.

Uche was found hanging in his house in Texas January 6. Chukwu continued:: "Uche was not withdrawn from people. Most people planning suicide withdraw from people for sometime. Some leave notes before hanging or show some traces of depression. Uche never showed any. I don't believe Uche hanged himself."

Lead ImageWhile Nigerians were wishing each other happy New Year last Saturday the family of Omoruyi Joel Igbinedion of Ologbosere Street, Benin City, Edo state capital was in sober mood. The futile search for their son, Churchill Omoruyi, who allegedly drowned in Tempoga (Ikpoba) River, in Benin, during a church baptism, prevented them from enjoying the celebrations.

The dilemma of the Omoruyis began on December 30, 2010, when Mr Omoruyi, 23, a 300-level student of International Studies and Diplomacy at the University of Benin left home for a vigil at Christ Foundation Church, on Ewah Lane in Benin on the invitation of his friend simply identified as Osagie.

The late Churchill was not expected back home since it was an all-night service. The family was, however, thrown into confusion when on the next day; Churchill was yet to return from church. They added that on January 1, policemen from Esigie Police Division came to their house to confirm the true identity of Churchill, which created suspicion that all was not well..

Toyin Osadolor, the sister of the deceased, claimed that police authorities had conflicting views on how the news about the death of her brother emerged. She said the divisional crime officer of Esigie police station told the family that the prime suspect in the crime, one Tony Ojo, the general overseer of Christ Foundation Church reported himself to the police.

Another version is that, the investigating police officer said the police got wind of the crime and quickly dispatched men to the scene where the suspect was arrested. They also wondered why the case was reported at Esigie police station which is more than six kilometers away from the scene, rather than New Benin or Ikpoba Slope police stations which are closer to the church.

A persistent check by the family however paid off on January 2,when the family members went to a spot where Churchill allegedly dived into the river during the baptism.“When we got there, we met some people discussing the issue and later, two guys emerged and told us that they were part of the search party and they were about embarking on another search and that we should leave our phone numbers behind and go home.

“But one of my cousins insisted on staying behind. I had not gone far when one of them came and said they needed some money before they could continue the search but he later confided in us that they had seen the body but they needed the money to perform some rituals.

“We mobilised and quickly got some money. We also invited the police so that they will be there when the corpse is discovered,” she said.

Organs missing

She stated further that when they saw the body, the eyes and tongue were missing. She alleged that the missing parts must have been used for rituals.

“His neck was swollen, but the stomach and the rest of the body were fresh. It was as if they dropped the body by the side of the river after the ritual work, we know that he did not drown,” she claimed.

Mrs Osadolor said the family will carry out an autopsy to ascertain the real cause of death, adding that the corpse has been moved to Suyi Medical Centre. The family demands that justice is done on the matter, stressing that “we want this kind of criminal activities to end.

When contacted on phone, Public Relations Office of the Edo State Police Command,Peter Ogboi, denied knowledge of the incident. Mr Ogboi said he was on casual leave, but may be in position to comment when he resumes today.

Meanwhile, the church was deserted when visited and the “prophet” is confirmed to be in detention with the deceased friend, Osagie.

Ocean Boys recorded a long overdue first win of the season when they defeated Niger Tornadoes 2-0 on Sunday. But the victory came at a cost as the club’s left back, Emmanuel Ogoli died during the match.

Ogoli slumped on the pitch in the 39th minute of play and after efforts at resuscitating him failed, he was rushed into an ambulance. He was confirmed dead on the way to the hospital.

photo:late Ogoli & okwaraji

The former Bayelsa United skipper only recently returned to first team duties with the former league champions after suffering a knee injury in a week two Premier League game against Plateau United at the Samson Siasia Stadium on November 14 following a clash with Plateau United’s Obinna Nwokolo..

He subsequently missed his side’s 5-2 drubbing at the hands of Rangers in Enugu but resumed training way ahead of schedule and even got to play a part in his club’s 1-1 draw at home to Sharks.

He also featured in penultimate weekend’s 1-0 loss at Gombe United and returned to the starting line-up in yesterday’s game against Niger Tornadoes, which turned out to be the last of his career.

Teammates in shock

“I still can’t believe what happened to Emma. One second he was standing and the very next he was lying flat on the pitch,” narrated Ocean Boys goalkeeper, Femi Thomas amidst tears.

“There was no challenge of any sort; no one touched him. He just went down in the (penalty) box not too far away from where I was standing,” recalled the former Nigeria junior international who, like the rest of the Ocean Boys squad, didn’t get to hear the sad news until the end of the game.

“We weren’t told anything until after the match. We were all shocked; we are still in shock and there’s no way we can celebrate,” added the former Nasarawa United shot stopper.

But for Ogoli’s death, there would have been every reason to celebrate Sunday’s win at the Samson Siasia Stadium as it was the first win of the campaign for the side from Brass and lifted them off the bottom of the league table ahead of the Jos based duo of Plateau United and JUTH, who both suffered defeats at the weekend, the latter, a 2-0 home loss to Kwara United.

History of deaths

Ogoli’s death won’t the first time a Nigerian player will be dying while on club or national duty with one of the earliest cases occurring back in August 1989 when Nigerian midfielder Samuel Okwaraji collapsed and died while playing against Angola in a World Cup Qualifier. An autopsy later showed that the 24-year-old had an enlarged heart and high blood pressure.

In the Nigerian league, back in October 1995, Julius Berger forward Amir Angwe, who five years earlier was the star of BCC Lions’ CAF Cup Winners Cup success, collapsed and died at the Onikan Stadium, Lagos.

He was later diagnosed to have died of a heart attack which was the same diagnoses for John Ikoroma who died while playing for Middle East club Al-Wahda in February 2000.

There was also the case of Warri Wolves goalkeeper Orobosa Adun, who slumped and died during a training session in May 2009, as well as Endurance Idahor, who in March this year collapsed while playing for his Sudanese club Al Merreikh and died on the way to hospital.

Man to Hang for Kidnap murder

Aba (Abia) — A High Court in Aba, Abia, yesterday, sentenced a 30-year-old man to death by hanging for kidnapping and murdering his victim...

Loveday Ahuchaogu, the kidnapper from Umuawa in Isiala-Ngwa Local Government Area of the state and others still at large, were facing a four-count charge for kidnapping and murdering Mr. Francis Ajayi on July 28, 2008, at Umudike in Ikwuano, near Umuahia.

Ahuchaogu was charged with kidnapping, murder, conspiracy and robbery.

The Presiding Judge, Justice Theresa Uzokwe, in her judgment, ruled that the accused was found guilty of the offences as charged and gave Ahuchaogu seven years imprisonment with hard labour for conspiracy and 10 years with hard labour for kidnapping.

The accused also got 10 years with hard labour for robbery and was condemned to death by hanging for murder...

Mrs. Ngozi Obioma, Director of Legal Services in charge of the Public Prosecution Division of Abia State Ministry of Justice, Aba Out-station, who is the lead prosecuting counsel, told newsmen shortly after the court sitting that it was a fair judgment.

Obioma said that Ahuchaogu’s defence was flimsy and frivolous against the weight and gravity of evidence against him as adduced by the prosecution.

She said the evidence against the accused was overwhelming as he was caught red-handed in the banking hall on camera while trying to cash the third tranche of the ransom money.

She said Ahuchaogu, who admitted collecting two other tranches of the ransom money, was also implicated through the SIM card of the deceased that was tendered as exhibit.

“It is my belief that justice is seen to have been done today, everybody in Abia, particularly Aba and environs, will agree that the menace of kidnapping has been on the increase, creating fears on residents.

“It will also serve as a deterrent to others who may be nursing the idea of embarking on such dangerous escapade,” Obioma said.

PORT HARCOURT: Ngozi whose age was put at 27 thought she had found her heart throb. She was in love; every other thing probably came second in her world while her lover, Victor who was said to be in his mid- 30s took the first position.

The suspect after he was apprehended

He meant everything to her. She demonstrated this in her actions and utterances because she lived and laboured for him. Her world apparently revolved around Victor.

But like the saying goes, you only know those you love, you don't with all certainty know those that love you.

That was the story of Ngozi. Convinced that she had found her Mr Right she probably became blind to any observation from a third party on the relationship when it contrasted with her feeling and understanding of what she was into..

In economic terms, she played the role of a man in the relationship. She sold vegetable for a lady at a spot styled Fruit Market on Kaduna Street in Port Harcourt to eke out a living.

Nobody could really say how she met her lover but Ngozi rented a small apartment, not the size of a standard one-room, on Ogbunabali area of Port Harcourt. The apartment was probably what her meagre take home from hawking vegetable for her employee at the Fruit Market could afford.

Her lover allegedly painted the picture of a homeless young man before her. So she accepted his plea to live with her in the poorly ventilated and lighted room.

While Ngozi would wake up in the morning and head straight to her vegetable business, neighbours around said Victor would hang around the compound till noon time and then take a stroll out to no specific place only to come back in the evening when Ngozi would have been back. Ngozi on her way back would buy some food items for meals at home.

They would eat and sleep off. It became the routine neighbours were aware off.

On May 27 this year, the story changed. They both came in that Thursday evening.

According to Victor she prepared food, they ate after which "I had marathon sex with her". Later she slept off. He said in the midnight he stealthily opened the door to get a rod and came back in.

The rod on his right hand, he looked at her cheerful face on the bed and the thought of killing her flooded his mind. He said he raised the rod to hit her but suddenly as if she had a sign, she shifted on the bed, apparently to change her sleeping position.

This caused him to wait a while to thoroughly observe if she was awake. Satisfied that she was in deep sleep, her lover said he raised the rod and brought it down very hard on her head.

From her sleep, the girl screamed "Jesus". And quickly he went for her neck, the intention being to complete the job by strangling her with one of her clothes lying on the floor. He said he applied his weight on a pillow he had already used to cover her nose and mouth.

And gradually his lover gave up the ghost. After killing her, he remained with the corpse in the room till morning when he was sure the main gate in the compound would have been opened.

Quietly, he locked the door and sneaked away. A day after, being the 29 while the nation was marking its democracy day, he resurfaced in the compound this time with a taxi driver.

He went to the room, forced the remains of his deceased lover into a waste bin but he had difficulty in doing this because of rigor mortis had set in. He had to rush out to get a big bag and forced the corpse into it.

And assisted by the taxi driver they deposited it in the boot of the car. It is not clear if the taxi driver knew what was in the bag. Together they drove to a burrow pit on Ada George area to dump it.

Before he left with the big bag neighbours were already getting suspicious that something fishy was going on. When they asked him of his girl he said she was on admission at the state owned Braithwaite Memorial Hospital.

One of the neighbours told the Vanguard Metro that when he zoomed off with the taxi he quickly ran to the female ward at BMH to verify if she was truly admitted there. He said he combed the hospital for her but could not find her. So when he came back he told his other neighbours about his suspicion.

They had to peep through the window into her room and what they saw on the floor rattled them. "There was blood everwhere. And quickly we concluded that he had killed the girl," he said.

Meantime, after disposing the corpse, Victor came back to clean up the room. As he stepped into the apartment the neighbours again demanded to know the whereabouts of his girl friend.

This time he sensed that they were becoming suspicious and he took to his heels. Already the landlord of the compound had been alerted on phone about the development.

And he had instructed that the neighbours should hold him pending when he returned from his business place. Like a wounded lion, Victor ran for his life. At a point he shook off those chasing him.

The landlord who does not want his name in print said when he got to a junction close to his house he saw some of those he asked to hold the suspect. They told him that Victor had escaped. While they were still rubbing minds on what next to do he said Victor was sighted some metres away running towards their direction.

Under his instruction they all ducked behind his car And as the Victor ran close to the spot they pounced on him. Some security men around the traffic light stepped in immediately, threatening to shoot Victor after he confessed to the murder. He told the gathering there that he did not regret his action.

When asked why he killed the girl, he told the crowd that it was because his late lover was always buying cheap clothes for him with her money.

The clothes, according to him, made him appear shabby before her whenever they went to church on Sundays.

He said he would have fled after killing her but he had to come back to dispose of the corpse because he did not want the family of the deceased girl to perform any ritual on it that would make her ghost to start haunting him.

He later led the crowd to the burrow pit where he dumped the corpse. Those around had to exhume the corpse which was already fast decomposing.

It is not clear how the case is being handled at press time but Vanguard Metro gathered that Victor was in prison custody. Nobody could say if he was being tried or if he was remanded in custody on account of his confession.

Meanwhile, some people who spoke to the Vanguard Metro on the incident said they alerted rights groups in the state when it happened but they were disappointed by their lack of response.

"They did not show any interest probably because there was no donor agency fund for such. This is why I disagree with most of them when they say they are fighting for the people because they only come out when they have donor agency funds on an issue," one of them lamented to the Vanguard Metro.

From all indications, the yearnings of those familiar with the incident is that justice should be done on the matter. "It is possible the family of the deceased may not have the means to pursue justice on this matter but it should not be traded with," one of them said.

Bangladesh fire KILLS 114

At least 114 people were killed in a fire that razed a crowded, centuries-old Dhaka neighbourhood overnight as rescue workers scrambled on Friday to pull bodies, many charred beyond recognition, from smouldering debris.

The blaze was the worst to sweep through the Bangladeshi capital in almost four decades.

"The confirmed death toll from the fire is now 114 and may rise," Muhibul Haque, district commissioner of Dhaka, told Reuters. He said more than 40 people were being treated for burns in hospital, with 12 in critical condition.

Fuelling the flames, which some witnesses said rose up to six-storeys high, were chemicals from illegal, home-based factories in the Kayettuli neighbourhood, one of the most densely populated in Dhaka and in the heart of the city.

"It seemed like hell broke loose," said a wailing woman, looking for her daughter and son in what remained of the area, home to several multi-storey blocks and tin-roofed dwellings. Some had been turned into chemical factories despite a law banning their presence in residential areas.

"Burning chemicals from stores within or beside the living quarters spewed on the streets like lava from a volcano. There was hardly any safe place to step out," added one survivor.

Television channels put the death toll at up to 150, including a dozen people who died in hospital.

The country's police chief, Nur Mohammad, said it was difficult to give an exact casualty toll until search and rescue operations were finished, likely on Friday afternoon.

RESIDENTS TRAPPED IN BURNING BUILDINGS

Some families lost up to eight members, witnesses said, and many residents were trapped trying to rush out of buildings.

"Flames leapt up to the sixth floor of buildings. It was a huge inferno," said a Reuters witness.

The blaze, believed to have been caused by an explosion at a electrical transformer, was the worst in the capital since 1971, the fire brigade said.

"I never have had such a harrowing experience in my 40 years here," said a doctor at the burns unit of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, as patients crammed the corridors and sobbing relatives searched for loved ones.

Hospitals, strained by the high casualty toll, began handing back corpses to relatives able to identify them. "Some of the bodies lying in the morgue are charred beyond identification," one police officer said..

Firefighters said narrow streets and the density of the buildings hampered access and the chemicals in the area helped the fire spread quickly.

The government has ordered an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.

Jahangir Kabir Nanak, State Minister for local government, said the lack of proper fire escapes in many buildings contributed to the high death toll. "We should have better planned homes and wider roads to save lives," he said.

The government declared Saturday a day of mourning and said it would pay 20,000 taka (197 pounds) towards the cost of each burial. "I have no words to console them," said Home Minister Sahara Khatun while visiting the hospital late on Thursday.
