Abuja — President Goodluck Jonathan has extended the new salary package to the military, para-military, police and intelligence community, who were not always covered by similar salary reviews in the past.

The extension of the jumbo increase to other public servants as opposed to the core civil servants, THISDAY learnt, has shot the entire wage bill to N267.4 billion.

President Jonathan had on May 1, 2010 promised to implement a new salary package for workers.

The new wage bill, which is said to be effective from July 1, 2010, shows an increase of N233,034,129,947 or 777 percentage increase from the present N34,388,156,375, which the Federal Government spends on core civil servants annually.

The wage bill is contained in a letter sent to the Minister of Finance Olusegun Aganga and Head of Service Steve Oronsaye by President Jonathan.

The letter was signed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President (Administration), Mr. Matt Aikhionbare.

The letter reads, "I am directed to forward Reference A to you and to convey to you Mr. President's approval of paragraph 8 on page 3."

Also, attached to the letter was a letter from Oronsaye to the President, which gave the details of the salaries increase for federal workers...

The letter reads: "Your Excellency may please wish to be informed that the compilation of the increase for the core civil service is an increase in wage bill of N34,388,156,375 per annum.

"However, because of the unrest the increase for the core civil service will likely generate among parastatals, the para-military, the police, the Armed Forces, the intelligence community and research institutes, it was recommended that a holistic approach be adopted.

"The cost implication of the holistic approach is a total wage increase of Two Hundred and Sixty-Seven Billion, Four Hundred and Twenty-Two Naira (N267, 422, 286, 322) per annum."

A memorandum containing the proposed agreement reached between the Federal Government Team and the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council-Trade Union Side was also attached.

The letter continues, "Your Excellency is invited to please note:

(i) That the salary negotiation committee has completed its assignment;

(ii) That increase of 53.37 % was agreed for Salary Grade Level 01-16 and for Directors at least 1/3 of the Salary of a Permanent Secretary;

(iii) That for peace to reign, increase of the same percentage for parastatals, para-military, the Armed Force, the intelligence community and the research institutes is recommended.

(iv) That additional Two Hundred and Sixty-Seven Billion, Four Hundred and Twenty-Two Million and Eighty-Six Thousand Naira (N267,422,286,322) is required to service the increase per annum;

(v) That 50 per cent of the figure in paragraph 1v above will be captured in the 2010 Supplementary Budget;

(vi) That the Budget Office is in agreement with the cost implication of the increase.

He consequently asked and got the President's approval for salary increase of 58.37 per cent for workers at Grade levels 01-16.

The President has also directed that salaries of directors in federal ministries and agencies be increased by at least 1/3 of the salary of a permanent secretary.

The Armed Forces, police, paramilitary, intelligence community (State Security Services, Nigerian Intelligence Agency among others), parastatals as well as research institutes will also enjoy the same salary increase.

President Jonathan approved the new salary structure wherein the new minimum wage, that is the salary of the least paid worker, is put around N17, 000.

The President has also proposed a supplementary appropriation to take care of the wage increase among other things. The bill is receiving the attention of the National Assembly.

Defending the wage increase, the President had said in his postings at the weekend on Facebook that the high cost of goods and services was the reason his administration decided to pay living wages to workers in the public service.

He had said: "Having taken time to inform myself of the prices of the most basic goods and services. I personally can imagine the strain many Nigerians go through in order to make ends meet.

"As such, I'm glad to report that progress has been made in terms of paying living wages to workers under the control of the Federal Government. This will not remedy the situation but it will grant some relief while we also apply the resources at our disposal to improving other sectors that will have a positive impact on our general standard of life."

Meanwhile, Oronsanye has confirmed that the Presidency has approved wage increase for ministries, departments and agencies, which were not considered for salary review in the past.

Speaking with newsmen at the opening ceremony of the Procurement Skill Training for Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies in Abuja, Oronsanye, however, said the payment of the new wage would commence after proposals currently before the National Assembly have been passed.

Also, the head of service cautioned the federal workers who see training programmes as opportunity for welfare packages that "it is no longer business as usual" as they will now be assessed at the end of every course conducted by the office to know if they have added value to themselves."

He said: "And if you do not scale through that test you don't go for any promotion exams... academic qualification is not the issue, it is competence, we do know that there are people who have certain qualifications but they cannot express themselves; academic qualification only brings you to be considered but it is what you are able to offer when you are tested that is important," he said.

According to him, only 180 out of 1,500 civil servants who applied and participated in the previous training exercise actually passed the assessment given at the end of the course.

"That is the reason why I stressed that it is no longer welfare...before now, people go to training because of the allowances they'll get, they just show up but when you now introduce the competency test at the end of the training exercise, you find that people now take it seriously.

"I can just tell you only recently the office of head of service reintroduced the mandatory training but what was new was that at the end of the training, people were tested...what we found out is that those who took the very first set of training didn't do well at the end but those coming after, the pass rate was very high and because they now know that they'll be tested from day one, they'll take it seriously. I believe that the pass rate this time will be better than the first one.

"The beauty of all of it is that at the end of the training programme, you'll then be assessed. This tells you that it is no longer business as usual, we should not just take training as a welfare package...by the time you come in for training, you should from the very beginning know that it is a very serious business because you'll be tested at the end when you finish," he said.

Director-General, Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) Emeka Eze explained that the idea of the workshop was to ensure that public servants are brought to a level where they could help government to achieve value for money in public expenditure.

"The idea of public procurement is to make sure that value for money as a policy of public expenditure is achieved. My expectation is that at the end of this workshop, participants would have been in a position to quickly at the close of the eyes know the ABC of public procurement so that if any political office holder comes or permanent secretary, they would be able to advise them

that this is what the rule says about how things are going to be done... rules for the sake of ensuring transparency and efficiency and providing level playing ground to all Nigerians that there is something happening in our ministry,"

The training programme is organised for officers in MDAs who want to covert to the new procurement cadre that has been created by the federal government

It might take almost forever to convince ace Ghanaian actor, Majid Michael to come to Nigeria again to act like his peers Van Vicker, John Dumelo, Jackie Appiah, and Nadia Bhuari are doing.

Earlier, it was reported that Majid said he won’t come to Nigeria, because Nollywwod producers are not professional , but NFC can authoritatively tell you that the story is not true. Majid actually ran for dear life.

The fair skinned star decided to give Nigeria a wide gap after he received death threats on phone from “actors” who felt he was taking the shine off them. Majid was gradually etching his name into the annals of Nollywood last year.

He was just like one of the boys. He easily blended-in with actors and had a thriving relationship with the girls. Some even said he was having one or two things going with Nollywood star, Genevieve Nnaji. He was becoming the first choice ahead of our own stars and he could act to save his life.

Majid stole lots of hearts with Guilty Pleasure and was becoming the number one face on our posters when trouble started for him. He started getting anonymous calls and death threats telling him his days were numbered. Some of the SMS revealed directions from which they came . Some read “you think you can come here and take away our livelihood?, and “Watch your back, your days are numbered”. He went home to consult his wife and she told him to stay put in Ghana because she needs him alive..

This has put paid to the talk that he quitted acting in Nigeria because of the quality jobs he was getting which made others envious. How has Van Vicker been surviving? It’s because unlike Majid, he doesn’t mix that much and he is more of a politician. He takes what is thrown at him, complains less and refuses to be entangled with the girls. But for Majid, he was loud and could outperform almost any Nollywood actor hands.

Other actors who starred in the same movies with him had to make a little extra effort , because he could expose just how much they still needed to learn in terms of delivery.

As the 2010 World Cup draws to a close this weekend in South Africa, women across the globe, especially wives of players from participating countries, are eagerly awaiting the return of their husbands back home.

While millions of football fans have been enjoying the thrills of the World Cup since last month, women, who were denied access to their husbands say they can’t wait for their heartthrobs to return home after Sunday’s final at the Soccer City stadium.

As flowers without water wither away, Menaye Donkor, wife of Ghana’s Sulley Muntari said 2010 World Cup has been great in South Africa but she is happy now that her hubby, who scored a fantastic goal against Uruguay, is due home.

•Sunley Muntari (left) and Menaye.

Speaking on South Africa Broadcasting Corporation, SABC Fashion Show, Menaye praised Ghana’s squad for doing Africa proud. “Ghana made all of us proud and I think my lonely nights are over now. Sulley will soon come home and then we’ll talk about the games as a family”.

•Muntari’s Menaye. Photos: Tunde Oyedele.

Worst hit are the ladies who escorted their husbands to South Africa. They have been coping alone in the hotels as coaches of participating teams do not want them near their husbands to avoid distraction in camp

Caroline Celico, wife of Brazil’s star, Kaka said: “I missed him a lot but I’m not the only one. Some women are used to this because the players travel all the time. But’s it’s hectic in South Africa. I’m, however, happy that the World Cup is over and my man will see me once again,” Caroline said.

•Kaka’s wife, Caroline.

If the women have a choice, may be they would have protested but the wealth from football gives them their daily bread and limelight.

Amaia Salamanca says she can’t wait for the sweet whisper of Spanish star, Ramos, but she must wait until after Sunday’s final against Netherlands to welcome her Real Madrid husband back home.

•Didier Drogba (right) and Lalla.

“I miss Ramos, especially when I see some couples hugging around. I’m happy Spain are playing well, but I have told him the rooms are getting too big for me,” Amaia jokingly said

From the parting statement made by Super Eagles skipper, Nwankwo Kanu immediately after Nigeria crashed out of South Africa 2010 World Cup, it was evident his wife, Amarachi, would be glad he was heading home.

•Nwankwo Kanu (right) and Amarachi.

Kanu, who played just a match for Nigeria at the tournament, was answering questions from international journalists when his wife called to ask when he would join them.

His response was so funny that the journalists at the Mixed Zone of Durban Stadium burst into rounds of laughter. “Oh, you want to know what next I plan to do for the Eagles now that Nigeria has crashed out of the World Cup? Okay, I’m going to meet my wife and kids, who are here in South Africa. They are missing me and I need to go and give them a treat to enjoy the rest of the tournament,” Kanu said as he parried the question.

A close friend of Kanu said Amarachi called her husband to be sure he was not attacked after the last game in which Nigeria drew 2-2 with South Korea.

Amarachi, P.M.Sports gathered, has been a good mother caring for their kids while Kanu was in camp. But, the Igbo lady was quoted as saying she could not wait to welcome her hubby back, especially with the chilly weather of the host country.

Also, Didier Drogba’s wife Lalla, Soma, wife of Matthew Booth of Bafana, say they would hold tight to their husbands immediately after the tournaments before they travel for club assignments again.

“The only language I will like to listen to is: ‘I love you’. That’s what Drogba tells me and I’ve missed that, Lalla said of his Chelsea of England and Cote d’Ivoire hubby....

Barring last minute hitches, the new leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation will announce the appointment of a new coach for the senior national team, the Super Eagles and the lucky man is no other person than the former U-23 chief coach, Samson Siasia.

Trustsports gathered exclusively yesterday that the former international was picked ahead of other coaches who showed interest in taking over from Lars Lagerback because he is the man Nigerians want for the job..

According to the NFF technical committee member who spoke on condition of anonymity, the Nigeria Football Federation is not bigger than the whole country and so if it is Siasia that the country wants for Eagles job, then the wish of Nigerians must be obeyed.

He said beside the wishes of Nigerians, the technical committee settled for Siasia because he has demonstrated the requisite ability to identify good players as he showed his stuff when he was in charge of the U-23 and later U20 national teams.

"We have settled for Siasia because he is the one that Nigerians want and since we are not bigger than the whole country, we have decided to do the wish of Nigerians. It is not a hidden fact that Siasia is loved by Nigerian football fans and there is no iota of doubt that he has what is needed to do this job.

"Moreover, we are embarking on a re-building process and the best man for the job is Siasia. He is known for discovering talent and this is the most reason why we have settled for him", he stated.

In addition, the NFF bigwig disclosed that Siasia has been contacted and is pleased with the offer as he has already expressed readiness to accept the offer.

He said: "We have been discussing with Siasia and he has agreed to coach Eagles. This is a rare opportunity and I am sure he will not have any reason to think twice before taking this offer. He is patriotic and this is a national call which he will surely be glad with".

In a related development, he revealed that Austin Eguaveon will be appointed the chief coach of the national U-23 team.

He said the former international has accepted the offer and is certainly pleased with it.

The member of NFF Executive Committee said a meeting will be held today between the technical committee and the two coaches to finalize discussions after which their appointments will be made public.

FIFA president, Sepp Blatter said at the weekend that Nigeria’s failure to make an impact at the 2010 World Cup did not surprise him.

FIFA21[1].jpgBlatter added that Nigeria and indeed Cote’d Iovire planned for failure when they chose to make changes to the managements of their teams two month to the World Cup.

“It would have been a miracle if Nigeria and Cote’d Ivoire had gone through.

“You cannot manage a national team when you coach two or three months before the competition,” said Blatter.

Nigeria hired Lars Lagerback, but the Swede coach failed to take Nigeria out of the group prelims, despite making a promise of taking the team to the semi-final..

This result left Nigeria’s President, Goodluck Jonathan fuming and he sacked all the national teams from FIFA events. He made a u-turn, but Nigeria Football Federation president Sanni Lulu, his first vice Amanze Uchegbulam and Taiwo Ogunjobi were gone in the aftermath. The Swiss-born Blatter downplayed referees mistake at the World Cup.

“We are bound by the best referees we have,” Blatter said. “We tried to get them on top but naturally referees are human beings and they commit errors like everybody.”

Blatter said it was not possible to judge this World Cup in comparison to others, but described it as “special”.

He said: “It was a World Cup on a new continent with a new culture and therefore it must be analysed on different levels, but if you look at the enthusiasm in Africa and also the repercussion in the world, if you look to the television audiences around the world, if you look to the fan-fests everywhere in the world then I have to say it was a special World Cup.”

Nigeria’s dare-devil robbers, showing utter disrespect to even men of God, have attacked a Roman Catholic priest, plucking one of his eyes.

.Their victim is Reverend Father M.O. Fayomi, one of the most senior priests in the Ekiti Diocese.

He was travelling 4 July on the road that links Ibokun in Osun State with nearby Ekiti State, when he was attacked by the bandits.

Sources close to Fr. Fayomi in the diocese said that the criminals stopped his car and asked him for money or any valuables.

The cleric’s plea that he was a man of God who had neither money nor earthly possessions did not move the robbers who brought out a sharp iron object and thrust it deep down his eye, leaving the man of God in pains and in blood.

The affected eye was almost out of the socket following the attack.

The bishop of the diocese, His Lordship, Rt. Reverend Felix Ajakaye, who was immediately informed about the attack, ordered that Fr. Fayomi be rushed to the hospital for immediate medical attention.

Doctors at the hospital where he was taken decided to remove the dangling priest’s eye from its socket so that the other eye may not be affected.

The priest is currently recuperating in a hospital outside Ekiti State.

A native of Ikoro-Ekiti town, Fr. Fayomi was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in February 1982, and he became one of the seven most senior priests in his diocese.

He was ordained along with Rev. Fr. P.O. Olawunmi by the former bishop of the diocese, Rt. Reverend Michael Fagun.

Fagun, consecrated bishop in October 1971, retired this year after attaining the mandatory age of 75.

•Suspects arrested •governor Alao-Akala wants to kill me, Alaafin alleges
From Ibrahim Shuaibu in Kano and Zachaeus Somorin in Lagos, 07.12.2010
Photos Emir of kano,Alaafin of Oyo & Governor Alao aKala

But for providence, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, would have been killed over the weekend.

The traditional ruler escaped assassination last Friday by a lone gunman who attempted to kill him during the Muslim Juma’at prayer in Kano.

The suspect, 19 year-old Usman Abubakar, who lives in the Doraji Quarters in Kano Metropolis, was however, apprehended by the Police before carrying out the act.

Also arrested is one Alhaji Abubakar Batakaye who allegedly asked Abubakar to carry out the act.
Abubakar told THISDAY at the Kano Police Command headquarters yesterday that he was sent by a Mallam (marabout) with a specific instruction to kill the emir.

“I arrived the mosque as early as 9 am that day. I was sent to the place of worship by a 65 year-old Mallam Abubakar Batakaye, a marabout with a specific instruction to kill the emir,” he told the newspaper.
He said Batakaye allegedly asked him to recite one of the verses in the Holy Quran, Qurisiyu, 12,000 times before the congregational prayers to ensure the success of the deadly assignment.

Abubakar also stated that the marabout gave him a small amulet to conceal inside his mouth in order for him to garner courage in executing the task and to mysteriously disappear after.
He said: “I regret this attempt to kill the emir; I seek for his forgiveness and pardon. I am under the influence of the mallam who directed me to commit this ugly act.

“I was influenced by the mallam who told me to commit the act. For over ten years, I have been an ally of the mallam and his order or directive for me is like a blessing.”
Spokesman of Kano Police Command, SP Baba Mohammed Azare, confirmed the story and the arrest of the duo, saying “the state commissioner of police has ordered immediate investigation of the matter and the investigating team will be led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Lawal Tanko.

Also speaking with THISDAY, Batakaye denied ordering Abubakar to engage in the Emir’s murder.
“I have been attending that particular mosque for more 20 years without failing; I have a place reserved for me inside the mosque. I cannot think of attacking a monarch because our religion teaches us to regard them as the father of all,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi 111, has alleged that Oyo State Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala is planning to kill him.

The paramount ruler in a petition to President Goodluck Jonathan and the Inspector-General of Police alleged that the governor in collaboration with a prominent businessman in the ancient city of Oyo and a commander of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in the state hatched the plot to kill him in his palace.

He, however, said the plot failed because the collaborating senior police officer buckled at the last minute and reported the plot to him.

But reacting to the development, the governor denied the allegation, saying it should be discountenanced.
The governor’s Special Adviser, Media and Publicity Dotun Oyelade said: “Governor Akala discountenanced the so-called allegation as not only unfounded but a cooked up story much in line with the serial misinformation that the opposition has always engaged in
where there is no motive or serious disagreement, it is spurious to concoct this kind of story.

Alaafin remains the father of the governor from whom he draws profound wisdom.”
Police sources confirmed Alaafin’s petition to THISDAY, saying the Inspector-General of Police Ogbonna Onovo has ordered a high-level investigation into the alleged murder plot.

According to THISDAY checks, the directive to investigate the plot was complied with at the weekend as a team of investigators drawn from the cream of the intelligence community swung into action, visiting the SARS in Oyo and interrogating officers implicated by the petition.

In his petition, the monarch gave details of the alleged plot, claiming the governor and a businessman conspired with the senior police officer based in the town to invade his palace under the guise of seeking the arrest of suspects in the murder of the late Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo, Alhaji Azeez Adegbile, on April 4 this year.
He further alleged that the plan was to have him and other palace residents shot in the melee that was to ensue during the invasion.

Alaafin alleged that the senior SARS officer was recruited into the plot by the businessman, who provided him with logistics for the operation, including a brand new Toyota Hilux Jeep and N2million cash reward.
The officer, the monarch alleged, initially declined to participate in the plot but agreed to play along when the governor came into the picture and offered to raise the cash reward to N10million.

Oba Adeyemi stated that rather than carry out the plot, the police officer reported the murder plot to him, and that after his (the monarch’s) personal investigation showed that the plot was real, he decided to write the petition to the President.
The monarch further stated that when the plotters found that their plan had leaked to him and eventually failed, they enlisted the intervention of some prominent South-west traditional rulers and leaders of thought to pacify him.

The paramount ruler said that much as he respected his colleagues that sought to intervene, he could not accede to their overture because of the grave implication of the plot.
Oba Adeyemi, therefore, called on the President to investigate the murder plot and ensure that the plotters are brought to book.

Even though she finds herself in a male dominated profession, Commodore Itinu Hotonu, has not allowed herself to be intimidated or pushed around. She has worked hard to earn every appointment and promotion that she has held since she joined the Nigerian Navy in 1985.

She is one of the women who have further stretched the notion that women are as fit as men in so many professions. The pace of merit she set from her training days has remained with her till today. Hotonu graduated as the best all-round student in a class of 73 students at the National Defence College, formerly National War College, Abuja between 2003 and 2004 as a member of Course 12.

Hotonu, who is also the first female military officer to attend the National Defence College, also attended the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, between 1995 and 1995 where her outstanding performance got her the recommendation of becoming the first female officer to be recommended as a Directing Staff. She won the award for outstanding performance as Managing Director of the Nigerian Navy Post-Service Housing Scheme (NNPSHS), when the Navy celebrated its 54th anniversary.

The award was presented to her by President Goodluck Jonathan, who was represented by the vice president, Namadi Sambo, at a dinner held at Thisday dome in Abuja to mark the celebration..

As managing director of the NNPSHS, a position she was appointed to in 2008, Commodore Hotonu has not just printed the Navy’s name in gold, but also proved to the generality of Nigerians that apart from its primary role of protecting the nation’s territorial maritime environment, the Navy is a reliable organization to do business with.

In just 12 months, June, 2009 when the commissioning of the foundation laying ceremony for the Navy Post-Service Housing kicked off in Karshi, Nassarawa State, Hotunu, has within a period of 12 months, built and completed a total of 460 houses comprising two and three-bedroom twin bungalows, three-bedroom detached bungalow, four-bedroom detached (standard) bungalows, four-bedroom detached (luxury) bungalows and four-bedroom duplexes.

The 460 houses exclude the six prototype houses that were on ground during the commissioning in 2009.

Apart from building and completing the 460 houses, Commodore Hotonu, popularly called ‘mama” by her staff at the NNPSHS, has also built and completed the NOWA secondary school which will take off in August. She has also increased the water reserve capacity of the estate, which stood at 60,000 litres in 2009 to 600,000litres.

While giving a history of what the estate looked like when they first moved to the site in her address during the commissioning/foundation laying ceremony of Navy Estate Phase II, Hotonu said the estate which had just one 3.5MVA transformer and one kilometre of paved internal road in June 2009, now has three units of 3.5MVA transformer and eight kilometers of paved internal roads, drains and walkways, while stone pitching and channelization of the rivers in and around the estate is 70 per cent completed. He agency also installed a VSAT for the estate, which is fully functional.

The architect naval officer has been able to pay back the loan she took to kick off the building of the estate in just 10 months as she revealed in her address. Today, she can beat her chest to say that the NNPSHS is completely debt free.

Hotonu, is now resident in the estate since 2009 with all her staff to ensure that things go smoothly as planned in the execution of the building project.

To make her dream come true in actualizing the estate development project, she somehow dropped her high status of a one-star general to act as a labourer, foreman, site engineer, carpenter, mason, painter, you just name it because of her passion for the job notwithstanding that she is the MD. She had to literally take part in every aspect of the work to ensure her supervision is total and a success.

Hotonu took the pains to travel and get her workers because she does not want to fail and she also takes the pain to go round and inspect every project on site and knows when a particular worker is performing below standard and bring him to order.

Hotonu bagged her degree in Architecture from the University of Nigeria, Nssuka in 1982 before enrolling in the Navy.

The outstanding female officer told Saturday Sun she joined the Nigerian Navy because she wanted to do something different.

Life inmate of Kirikiri Maximum Prison gets outstanding SSCE result

by Adeola Balogun

The zeal with which Adeniyi Ayinla does his job as the head teacher of the prison school at the Kirikiri Maximum Prison, Apapa, Lagos, is amazing. He does it in a way that one can not but think that he earns a salary for taking care of the school and teaching the inmates that attend it. As a prisoner, Ayinla had taken his O' level SSCE exams in the school and had passed all the subjects he entered for in 2007. Thereafter, he proceeded to the National Open University (NOUN) where he is undergoing a diploma programme in Financial Management. Simultaneously, he is pursuing a degree in Theology at the Missions University, USA through correspondence.

Educational pursuit is usually an exercise reserved for free men and women who set their eyes on certain life accomplishments. But that is not the case with Ayinla who until December 2008, when his death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment, was awaiting the hangman's noose. As a matter of fact, he was on death row for ten years, five months before his death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. Ayinla had been sentenced to death in 1998 after he was found to have been involved in a robbery operation that took place in Mushin, Lagos sometime in 1997.

Speaking with our correspondent, who had accompanied a non-governmental organisation on a visit to the prison, Ayinla, who seemed to have grown deep in the Christian faith, waxed philosophical and spiced every sentence with quotes from the bible as he chatted with our correspondent. He said he had never lost the hope of regaining his freedom one day, and that hope had fired his desire for education, which he said would guarantee his independence and ability to reintegrate himself into the society as soon as he is set free. Fortunately for him, his sense of purpose has attracted help and support from the various religious organisations that throng the prison on a daily basis.

He told our correspondent that he was getting himself educated so that he would not constitute a liability on anyone whenever he walks out of the prison gates. He said, "I have never lost hope of getting a reprieve one day. My hope of survival became strong because I was lucky to become one of those that were moved out of the condemned cell in Abeokuta prison in 2005 as a result of congestion in the prison. In Abeokuta, the condition was so hard because we were clamped in a dingy cell as people on the death row. But when we arrived here, we became freer. We could even walk about, and this, to me, is the green light that I might one day breathe the air of freedom.

"I did not waste time to make good use of the temporary relief. I dusted my books. Before I was arrested in 1997, I already had my O' level certificate, which was not 100 per cent okay. So, in 2006, a year after we arrived here, I took the SSCE and because of my very long years in confinement, I only made three papers, including Mathematics, Economics and Commerce. In 2007, I sat for it again. This time around, I had seven papers while my English was withheld. I was not satisfied because I wanted to have everything at one sitting. I applied for SSCE again, but miraculously, the English which had been withheld was released. Thank God for the study centre of NOUN here. I wanted to start a degree course in Economics, but because the course is not available here, I opted for a diploma. But by the special grace of God, I will still pursue it."

According to the transcript of his 2007 SSCE result with examination number 5250826006, Ayinla had the following result: Commerce A1, Financial Account A1, Economics B3, Government B2, Islamic Studies B3, Literature in English B3, Mathematics B3, Agric Science F9 and English Language C4. Ayinla said he was proud to be a NOUN student pursuing a diploma in Financial Management with matriculation number NOU070292850.

Seeing the way he bubbled with life, one could not but ask how he managed to look so cheerful in a prison environment. To this, he said, "The prison is not supposed to kill your spirit. Rather, it is supposed to reform you. If I had been aware of the consequence of my behaviour, I would never have gone into crime. You see, all those cautions by the elders do not make any meaning to a young man who does not understand the meaning of freedom. In my own case, I got influenced by friends and the company that I kept. I was implicated in the robbery case even though I was not directly involved. But I knew about it and I have since regretted my action. How many young men do you want to tell to stop following friends on the streets? It is not easy. But I am wiser now."

Explaining the positive change in his life, Ayinla said he had been lucky to have people around him, particularly his family and visitors to the prison.

He said, "My mother died exactly three weeks after I was sentenced to death in 1998. I regret that incident a lot, and I don't know how I can forget that for the rest of my life. My fiancée has been so wonderful. While I was in Abeokuta, we lost contact. But when I arrived Lagos, she got to know about it and has been very supportive. She has really surprised me. I don't know how many ladies can be so faithful. I must confess that her case has been giving me so much concern because I don't want to lose such a dedicated lady. And the only way to achieve that is to get my freedom which I fervently pray and fast for.

"Nigerians are wonderful people. I can not quantify the love and support I have enjoyed from those who have come across me in prison. The case of one Captain Salami shocked me. He was the person that paid my first school fees at NOUN, which was N48,000. He met me during one of his visitations to the prison and after finding out about me, he paid the money. There are so many of them that I can not begin to tell you now. So, if you see me keeping hope alive, the reason is that so many people have shown their belief in me that I would one day become a personality in the society.

"I pray that Nigerian authorities, especially the government of Ogun State would have mercy on me and commute my life imprisonment to total freedom."

The Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Prison Service, Mr Ope Fatinikun, was delighted at the progress Ayinla had made in his educational pursuit in spite of his situation. He told our correspondent on the phone that the NPS encourages inmates to get themselves busy and prepare for possible re-integration into the society whenever they walk out free.

"We discovered that about 80 per cent of the inmates, when they come in, they don't have education, and we guess that is why they went into crime. So we ask them to tell us their areas of interest; whether they want to go to school or train in vocational skills. We have adult education centres in the prisons where inmates can go to primary school and secondary school. In fact, we have WAEC and JAMB centres in Ikoyi and Apapa maximum prisons. We have NOUN centres in both Ikoyi and Apapa where inmates can go further in their education. We train those who prefer to go for vocational skills of their choice," he said.

A really Strange Tale indeed Read On !

Marriage is a common cultural institution. In Nigeria, it comes in variants, according to the culture group. But it is not known of any ethnic group where it is allowed that a woman would marry two husbands at the same time.

But that pattern of marriage would not have happened until some 16 years ago when a set of twins in Kogi State introduced a strange dimension to marriage by taking one wife and having children from her.

While brothers and close friends kill each other over a woman and for encroaching on each other’s territory, these strange ones scored a weird first in standing the culture of their people on the head. Because this was not acceptable in their world, their father fought the arrangement for as long as he lived. When his pestering became so unbearable, the first known woman to have married two husbands same time, same day and lived and had children for them had to dump the relationship.

Wags in the community have put their finger to the conviction that the strange twins eventually died after their peculiar marriage arrangement was forcefully severed. Yes, they accepted, to do their father’s bidding, but could not contract any other marriage as separate individuals, as demanded by family, until they both died mysteriously.

A peculiar world

The villagers of Ayetoro-Gbede and Ayekunle-Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State witnessed the unusual two young men, who were born about 40 years ago and died the same year four years back. They carried on like they had their private world oblivious of what the tenets of culture taxed them to do. That defiance made them step outside defined lines to take one wife and had children from her.

They were simply known as Taiwo (Towo) and Kehinde (Koido), the general accolade for twins in Yoruba. But they called each other Oba, short for their surname - Obadero. Like an oba (king) even as they called each other, they carried like institutions to themselves and died as mysteriously as they lived.

Saturday Sun had to find out the truth in the story in Kogi State that the two were more than enigmatic. They had everything in common and did everything together. They said the same words, when speaking and joined their buttocks when defecating.

What was responsible for this unusual act was explained by their stepmother and aunt, Awawu Obadero and Racheal Ologe. “The reason for that unusual closeness and attachment was because they came with one placenta at birth and against our tradition of dividing it into two before burial, theirs was not divided. Thus, naturally, they began acting as an individual.”

Because the twins are late as well as their parents, the family home looked deserted when our reporter visited. But their stepmother, elder sister and son are the few inhabitants left. When asked to tell the story of the twins, the old woman, Awawu Obadero, excused herself and went to call the twins’ elder sister from a nearby market. They came back and the story began.

Reliable tale

“The twins’ mother had died when they were barely four years old”, their sister started. “Right from their infancy, they did things in common. They had left home to fend for themselves at about 10. Later, they settled in Ayetoro-Gbede doing bricklaying, farming and other odd jobs. It was there they met their wife, Toyin (not real name), who they shared, in defiance to everyone’s objection. She bore two children for my brothers - Kulu, a female and Ibrahim, a male. Kulu is now married, while Ibrahim stays here in the family house. It was at the time our father insisted that they got married separately that strange and tragic things began happening to them.”

Wife of two

Saturday Sun spoke to the twins’ wife, Toyin, who now lives in Ayetoro-Gbede. She pleaded that her picture should not be published because she has just moved on with another man after the double take.

She said: “I knew Taiwo and Kehinde (her late twin husbands) since adolescence. We met when we were laying bricks in Ayetoro. They were both strange and adorable to me because they did and had everything in common. Both had approached me the same time. They used to say the same word at the same time. Strange even to me, I did not accept or reject their advances. I soon became inseparable from them anywhere they went. I must have been carried away by the way they did everything in common. They felt hunger, urge to urinate and others, the same time. They even expressed love the same manner and time. They were very interesting lovers. So I could not resist them. Even the villagers used to say that only I understood their weird ways.”

The strange wife of two husbands had fondness for the two and possibly would have loved them dearly and equally as they did her. “I called one Iye-Oho, and the other Oba-Oho,” she revealed.

The special woman never held anything back about the affection she had for the duo. It would have been a sizzling double take for her as she revealed that her two late husbands had sexual urge the same time and expressed love, sex and romance the same way. You might be going too far to inquire if any of them was particularly better in bed than the other or if one of them gave her better deal.

Putting asunder

After giving birth to Ibrahim, the second child, father of the weird twins, Eleha Obadero, began putting pressure on them to marraige separate women, in line with customs and tradition. “They did not like that because they had grown so attached to me. I did not also like the idea and so I withdrew from them. It was then they relocated to Ayegunle-Gbede, their hometown. But they never married another woman. Though I was told they tried several women, it never worked out. I had to join them later, hoping things would be better, but their father gave no chance for this re-union till they died in strange circumstances. Then I left with my daughter, Kulu and returned here,” the woman of history narrated.

One child, two dads

Fourteen-year old Ibrahim, the only son of the twins, also confirmed that his granddad at a time pestered his late fathers to get married separately and it was not long after this that tragedy struck. He said: “It is true that my grandfather wanted my fathers to get married to different women. But it wasn’t long after this that strange things began to happen to them. He used to also say that Taiwo was more likely my father, as I behaved more like him.”

But the handsome teen knows, without any doubt, that he has peculiar identity, as, perhaps, the only young man in his world who could be excused to fill a form stating double paternity instead of one, like others. And as a young child growing up, he would not have lacked paternal care, not with two fathers ever present with him.

Strange deaths

Four years ago, after the twins had accepted to toe the line of custom and accept to marry the prescribed way, they died.

Their stepmother, Awawu Obadero said: “ Kehinde was smitten by snake in his farm one day and unusual of him, he did not reveal it until late in the night when it was too late to remove the venom. He died shortly after. After his death, Taiwo immediately became a shadow of his former self and was always saying he would join his brother. In less than a year later, he fell ill and died.

Okilo, the village ballad, told Saturday Sun: ‘If you asked one of them a question, the two will answer at once, saying the same word. They urinate on the same spot. They were very identical and so you cannot differentiate them. They had only one wife whom they were always going out with. They loved her so much. They reigned as strange twins in this village and died the same year.

64 killed in Uganda During World Cup final

64 killed as bombers target World Cup viewers

Al-Qaida-linked group eyed after blasts; U.S. aid worker among the victims

KAMPALA, Uganda — Simultaneous explosions tore through crowds watching the World Cup final at a rugby club and a restaurant in Uganda's capital, killing at least 64 people including one American, officials said. Police feared an al-Qaida-linked Somali militant group was behind the attacks.

The blasts went off as people watched the game between Spain and the Netherlands late Sunday. The attack on the rugby club, where crowds sat outside watching a large-screen TV, left 49 dead, police said. Fifteen others were killed in the restaurant explosion.

"We were watching soccer here and then when there were three minutes to the end of the match an explosion came ... and it was so loud," witness Juma Seiko told Reuters.

Several Americans from a Pennsylvania church group were wounded in the restaurant attack including Kris Sledge, 18, of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania.

"I remember blacking out, hearing people screaming and running," Sledge said from the hospital. His right leg was wrapped and he had burns on his face. "I love the place here but I'm wondering why this happened and who did this ... At this point we're just glad to be alive."

Joann Lockard, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Embassy in Kampala, confirmed one American was killed.

San Diego-based group Invisible Children, which helps child soldiers, identified the dead American as aid worker Nate Henn.

Kampala's police chief said he believed Somalia's most feared militant group, al-Shabab, could be responsible for the attack. Al-Shabab is known to have links with al-Qaida, and it counts militant veterans from the Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan conflicts among its ranks. Simultaneous attacks are also one of al-Qaida's hallmarks.

If those suspicions prove true, it would be the first time that al-Shabab has carried out attacks outside of Somalia.

The explosions came just two days after an al-Shabab commander, Sheik Muktar Robow, called for militants to attack sites in Uganda and Burundi — two nations that contribute troops to the African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia.

Police Chief Kale Kaihura said he suspected al-Shabab had carried out the attack. The group's fighters, including two recruited from the Somali communities in the United States, have carried out multiple suicide bombings in Somalia.

'Whatever makes them cry, makes us happy'
In Mogadishu, Somalia, Sheik Yusuf Sheik Issa, an al-Shabab commander, told The Associated Press early Monday that he was happy with the attacks in Uganda. Issa refused to confirm or deny that al-Shabab was responsible for the bombings.

"Uganda is one of our enemies. Whatever makes them cry, makes us happy. May Allah's anger be upon those who are against us," Sheik said.

In addition to Uganda's troops in Mogadishu, Uganda also hosts Somali soldiers trained in U.S. and European-backed programs.

White House spokesman Tommy Vietor said the U.S. was prepared to provide any necessary assistance to the Ugandan government.
President Barack Obama was "deeply saddened by the loss of life resulting from these deplorable and cowardly attacks," Vietor said.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton joined Obama in offering condolences and added, "The United States stands with Uganda. We have a long-standing, close friendship with the people and government of Uganda and will work with them to bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice."

Kenya's foreign minister, Moses M. Wetangula, told The Associated Press last week that enough veteran militants from the Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan conflicts have relocated to Somalia to spark worry inside the international community..

International militants have flocked to Somalia because the country's government controls only a few square miles of the capital, Mogadishu, leaving most of the rest of the country as lawless territory where insurgents can train and plan attacks unimpeded.

New attacks on Christians in Kaduna state

At least seven people, including a mother of six, have been killed by Islamic militants in Nigeria's Kaduna state just four months after attacks left more than 500 dead in neighbouring Plateau.

The charity Release International, which serves persecuted Christians around the world, is calling on the new Nigerian president to ensure greater protection for vulnerable Christians of all denominations in the country.

Partners of Release say that armed men in military uniform shot dead seven Christians in Kizachi Dawai Chawai, Kaduna state, on July 3.

The gunmen surrounded the village at about 8.30pm and began shooting indiscriminately. The dead included a primary school teacher and a mother of six. Five others were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds..

The following day, assailants wielding guns and machetes attacked Ganawuri, a village near Jos, in neighbouring Plateau state. The Jos area was the scene of brutal violence against Christians in March which left 520 people dead, including many women and children.

Release sources say that the gunmen in both these latest raids were suspected Fulani militants from Kaduna.

These same sources now accuse the Nigerian military of not doing enough to protect vulnerable Christian communities. One source reports that police had withdrawn from Kizachi Dawai Chawai the day before the attack, because the government had allegedly failed to pay their salaries.

Release CEO Andy Dipper, who is currently on a fact-finding trip in Nigeria, said: "We're appalled to hear of yet more violence against Christians, who have been warning for some time now that they feared further attacks.

"We appeal to President Goodluck Jonathan and his administration to take firm action now to ensure that the military and police carry out their full responsibilities and protect Christians properly. We acknowledge it is a huge task - but enough is enough."

President Jonathan, who is from the mainly Christian south of Nigeria, was officially sworn into office in May, after the death of the previous incumbent, Umaru Yar'Adua.

Plateau is located in the centre of the country between the largely Muslim north and the south. Along with religious tensions, tribal and political differences have seen an increasing polarisation between different ethnic groups there.

Kaduna, just north of Plateau, has also been a flashpoint for conflict between Christians and Muslims, most notably during the 'Miss World riots' in 2002 when a newspaper's alleged blasphemy against Islam's prophet Mohammed sparked widespread violence against Christians.

Release's Andy Dipper urged Christians in the UK and Ireland to stand with the church in central and northern Nigeria. "Christians in Plateau and Kaduna are standing firm despite intolerable persecution - but they desperately need our prayers.

"And let's pray too for strength and wisdom for those in authority, including President Jonathan, so they can find a lasting solution to end this cycle of violence."

A final so far removed from the Beautiful Game, so far out of keeping with such a largely upbeat tournament, was settled four minutes from the end of extra time by Andres Iniesta, so crowning Spain champions of the world for the first time. They had waited so long what was an extra half-hour?

The preceding 116 minutes had been atrocious, ill-tempered, as bad as the Italia 90 denouement and littered with bookings, with Howard Webb effortlessly eclipsing Romuald Arppi Filho’s record of six in the 1986 final. Holland were the worst offenders.

Never mind the quality, feel the justice. Spain are worthy champions.

A team so gloriously committed to playing the game the right way gain the ultimate reward. Spain pass and move, always accentuating the positive, always looking to stretch the boundaries of the game, always maintaining momentum. Even when struggling to storm the well-organised Dutch barricades, they kept going.

In overcoming the obdurate Dutch, Spain earned their right to sporting immortality. In claiming the 2010 World Cup, Spain will also have made a wonderful case for hosting the 2018 competition. Their presentation will be simple: Spain is the home of the world and European champions, of the planet’s premier league and the place of Xavi, Iniesta and David Villa. And wise owls of the dig-out like Vicente del Bosque, a man determined to make history.

History had been all around last night. An hour before kick-off, following a spectacular closing ceremony featuring the eclectic but electric combination of Shakira, three fighter planes and 13 automated elephants, Nelson Mandela was driven on to the pitch in a buggy.

Resplendent in a Cossack hat, the great statesmen smiled and waved as Soccer City stood in emotional salute, chanting his name. Twenty years ago, Mandela, newly released from prison, had marched into the same arena, the then FNB Stadium, and declared “we are going forward’’. His beloved country has certainly taken another stride into the international limelight this past memorable month.

Mandela’s people were out in force for this, sporting the kits and face-paints of Holland and Spain. Inevitably, the Spanish had been first to show in an opening half that sadly lost its way, looking to release David Villa through the middle or unleash overlapping full-backs, particularly Sergio Ramos down the right.

The Real Madrid defender was soon fouled by Giovanni van Bronckhorst, gifting Spain a free-kick. Xavi, the little conductor of the grand orchestra, lifted in a ball met firmly by Ramos, whose downward header was athletically parried away by Maarten Stekelenburg. It was to prove one of the few highlights of a first half scarred by bad challenges, including one potential rib-breaker from Nigel de Jong.

Facing a physical and technical challenge, the Spanish still sought to maintain their usual percussive rhythm, taking their possession game to Holland, who were slow neither in the robust tackle nor in coming forward.

When Sergio Busquets dawdled, Dirk Kuyt nipped in, nicking the ball but his shot was too weak to alarm a keeper of the class of Iker Casillas. Back Spain came, Villa and Andrés Iniesta linking neatly around the box to send Ramos down the inside-right channel. Easily eluding Kuyt, Ramos drove the ball into the six-yard box where Johnny Heitinga cleared. From the ensuing corner, Xabi Alonso crossed to the far post where Villa met the ball on the volley but could find only the side-netting. Close but no cigarillo.

Those expecting a masterclass of attacking football form both sides were being disappointed. For the rest of the half, it was essentially end-to-end fouls. Webb’s pen was in danger of running out of ink. English ref, physical game? It was sad to see even technical players stooping so low. Robin van Persie had already poleaxed Busquets and now set about Joan Capdevila, catching the Villarreal defender with a nasty challenge.

Only Webb’s prompt action prevented it spilling over. Carles Puyol arrowed in on Arjen Robben’s ankle and followed Van Persie into the Rotherham referee’s book. Then Mark van Bommel, never shy in examining opponents’ shin-pads and mettle, clattered Iniesta from behind. Capdevilla, Xavi and Puyol immediately formed a debating society and petitioned Webb to ensure justice was done. It was. Van Bommel was cautioned.

Spain were no angels. Ramos sent Kuyt crashing to earth and became the fourth name taken by Webb. The fifth was the worst offence, De Jong burrowing his boot into the chest of Alonso. Webb scribbled away, and brandished yellow but it should have been red. If Alonso wants acupuncture, there are better places to get it than De Jong’s boot.

Football briefly reared its beautiful head when Pedro, preferred to Torres, shimmied forward, causing real concern in the orange ranks, but he placed his left-footed shot wide. Xavi started to get more on the ball, at one point turning to run at goal only to be baulked by Van Bommel.

By fair means and foul play, Holland blocked Spain’s route to goal. Still the offences continued, Kuyt almost ripping Gerard Pique’s shirt off at a Spanish corner. Wesley Sneijder, hitherto anonymous, decided to stamp himself on Busquets, rather than the game, planting his studs in the midfielder’s thigh.

As the half closed, the game suddenly opened up. Robben, cutting in on to his favourite left foot, brought a scrambling save from Casillas. Things could only get better, prayed the fans inside Soccer City, echoing sentiments of an estimated 700 million viewers worldwide.

Spain enjoyed a wonderful chance as the second period got underway, Puyol flicking the ball on to the unmarked Cadevilla, but he miscued badly.

Holland stirred, Robben again manoeuvring the ball on to his left foot and letting fly, again bringing a low save from Casillas. Unlike Robben, Sneijder was disappointing, soon giving the ball away.

Still the challenges flew in, Van Bronckhorst ensuring Ramos did not get past him. Still the crime count continued to rise, Webb registering another caution. Webb must have felt as if he were back on the beat in Sheffield. And another…Heitinga brought to book for following through on Villa.

Spain were then rescued by Casillas. Pique had only just returned after some treatment, following an accidental elbow from Kuyt, and the Barcelona centre-half reacted too sluggishly when Sneijder slid a ball through. Robben was through on goal, using his left foot to place the ball around Casillas but the keeper still managed to stretch out a leg and divert the ball to safety. Just.

Holland had thrown an orange blanket across midfield and Spain needed to look wide. When Jesus Navas, having replaced Pedro, swept in a cross, Villa was found badly wanting. Spain’s No 7 then lofted a free-kick aimlessly over. Still Spain attempted to find a way through. Navas was making a difference, stretching Holland.

Still chances fell Spain’s way. When Xavi hoisted in a corner the unmarked Ramos headed wastefully over. Iniesta almost found a path to goal but was brilliantly dispossessed by Sneijder.

Holland were looking to soak up the pressure and hit on the break. When Van Persie flicked Stekelenburg’s long kick on, Robben was off and running, breaking through the middle, accelerating ahead of Puyol, who wrapped an arm around the flying Dutchman. Robben managed to escape but could not escape Casillas, who dived at his feet and again saved Spain.

Extra-time was a slow lingering death. Opportunities came and were wasted. Spain screamed for a penalty when Heitinga caught Xavi. Then Stekelenburg saved from Cesc Fabregas. Nobody seemed prepared to score.

Matijsen headed over. Jesus Navas’ shot deflected just wide off Navas. Some Olés, almost of relief, swirled around the ground when Iniesta nutmegged Robben. Then Fabregas glided through before poking his shot wide. Torres’ arrival for the second period of extra time was greeted with almost messianic fervour.

Heitinga, already cautioned, then pulled back Iniesta and walked, although Xavi was unable to make the free-kick count. Holland could have lost Robben for kicking the ball away but Webb showed leniency.

And then nirvana.

After all the dross, Iniesta pounced following good work by Torres and Fabregas.

Eight picks, eight correct, eight tentacles. Paul the Oracle Octopus is clearly the biggest winner of the World Cup after recording a perfect prognostication record whether he knows it or not (he probably doesn't).

The big question was whether Paul's predictive superpowers would translate to the final - the first match he was asked to predict that did not involve his native Germany. But such piddly concerns did not bother Paul. Mostly because he's an octopus. Just as he predicted, the European champions Spain became world champions for the first time with an Andres Iniesta goal in extra time. And as the Spanish celebrated, Paul floated in his tank, sure of his genius and probably craving a fresh clam..

Since Paul is an international celebrity of the highest order now, everyone wants a piece of him - both literally and figuratively. Italy is trying to claim that he was caught in Italian waters, Spanish businessmen are trying to buy him for €30,000 ($38,000), and Dutch priests tried to dismiss him.

But in Spain, Paul is an icon. The Spanish prime minister has already spoken of his desire to protect "Pulpo Paul" and the mock up of a new version of Spain's flag could be dangerously close to becoming real.

So what becomes of Paul now? Well, he'll probably continue to live out the remainder of his days at the Sea Life aquarium in Oberhausen, Germany, no longer forced to pick his food out of flag-covered boxes while surrounded by an obscene number of media types. He will swim at his leisure and continue to be oblivious to the existence of sports. He will retire a winner and a global sensation - what every other octopus (and even a few pundits) wishes they could be.

All hail Paul.

Next is to develop artificial soldiers ! dis oyinbo people na wonder dem dey betta.

Article:

American scientists have developed 'artificial' blood that could soon be used to treat wounded soldiers in battle..

The genetically-engineered blood is created by taking cells from umbilical cords and using a machine to mimic the way bone marrow works to produce mass quantities of usable units of red blood cells.

Known as 'blood pharming' the programme was launched in 2008 by the Pentagon's experimental arm, Darpa, to create blood to treat soldiers in far-flung battlefields.

The firm Arteriocyte, which received $1.95 million for the project, has now sent off its first shipment of O-negative blood to the food and drugs watchdog in the US, the FDA.

The blood is made by using hematopoietic cells taken from umbilical cords in a process called ‘pharming’ – using genetically engineered plants or animals to create mass quantities of useful substances.

One umbilical cord can be turned into around 20 units of usable blood. A wounded soldier in the field will require an average of six units during treatment.

Blood cells produced using this method are 'functionally indistinguishable from red blood cells in healthy circulation', the company claims.

‘We’re basically mimicking bone marrow in a lab environment,' Arteriocyte boss Don Brown told Wired magazine.

‘Our model works, but we need to extrapolate our production abilities to make scale.’

If approved it could revolutionise battlefields where a shortage of blood donors can hamper treatment of wounded soldiers.

The process of giving transfusions in war zones is also made more difficult because donated blood has to be transported long distance before it reaches the field hospitals where it is urgently needed.

Some blood is already 21 days old before it reaches patients, meaning it only has around a week-long shelf-life before it must be discarded. There are increased risks of infection or organ failure if blood is too old.

Mr Brown said: ‘Until now, the military’s strategy has mainly been contained to basically using stale blood,’

‘And they’ll set up mobile blood banks in a war zone, but even every troop rolling up their sleeve might not be enough when you’ve got a crisis with dozens or more injuries.’

Human trials are not likely until 2013, but the firm predicts the ‘pharmed’ blood could be used by the military within five years if the Pentagon calls for it sooner.

A unit of blood is around a pint and the human body contains between eight and ten pints of blood in total.

Currently, each unit made by Arteriocyte costs $5,000 to produce. If approved, the firm expects to bring this down to around $1,000 per unit by scaling up the production process.

As well as being needed by the military, 'pharmed' blood could also be used in hospitals to make up for shortfalls in blood donations if it is approved.

The 'pharmed' blood is type O negative which is the most sought after variation because it can be used with any patient, regardless of their own blood type.

Last month the US Red Cross issued an urgent appeal for blood donors to come forward after it said that its supply of O Negative blood was hitting 'critically low levels.

In the last election, his party had 74,059 votes... That is according to them, according to INEC. His plans to ensure the next election is different They rubbished the entire democratic process. They stifled the voice of opposition and eradicated any form of democracy that is a threat to them, as the political party in power. This is a very peculiar country, but one thing is very clear: the hand of the Almighty God has always being on this country. The hand that brought Obasanjo, Yar'Adua and Jonathan, that same hand will position Reverend Okotie and once that is done, you will know that our nationhood has evolved.

Why God would allow the (electoral) crises to persist

Because there is a word in the scripture that is called long suffering and he delays justice because of the poor that will suffer. If we break into hostilities, it is these rich men that will first abscond. So many times, the Lord is merciful because of we, the people; not because he wants to perpetuate those people in power, but because he is careful. The prophecy concerning the PDP has gone forth and they are going to fight each other and destroy each other because that is how evil is terminated. We can't fight them. They are too strong for us. So they most fight each other..

His previous assertions that he would president in 2003 and 2007

That is what I'm saying, that my time will come. I already quoted Abraham Lincoln in the sense that I am so sure that it is a divine mandate. All I have to do is wait for the right time and not compromise my philosophy or compromise my faith and join a conglomerate of men and women who call themselves political parties, whereas they are just a conscription of men and women of anti-theatrical philosophies who have no ideological connectivity and their only common denominator is their desire to annex wealth. Because I believe in a Nigeria where truth reins; a fresh Nigeria which our party symbolises in F-Faith, R-Responsibility, E-Equality, S-Security and H-Hope. This is the philosophy upon which I have erected the citadel of my confidence because I believe only a fresh Nigerian can salvage this nation. All this cosmetic and superficial activity that are going on by the ruling party is a journey in futility. This will also drift us back to square one, which we have always been.

How soon the drift will happen

If we perpetuate a PDP government, which I think Nigeria cannot afford, we will be back to square one and that is a recipe for extinction. The party is incapacitated, ab initio. But the party has been ruling for 12 years I am aware and it was necessary for Nigerians to reach a point of self-examination and re-assessment of this slavery. Our leaders have betrayed us on a large scale and it takes a while to come to that realisation and global events, as seen in the angry youth protest in Abuja as Nigerians are recognising what they have to do without anybody galvanising them. It is an evolution. Mao Tse Tung once said if people no longer fear your power, it is because another power is on its way and that is what we are seeing here. I believe with all my heart that we are seeing the last vestiges of this oppressive leadership of the PDP. I believe our people are coming to a place where they are willing to make the necessary sacrifice to emancipate themselves and that the money politics that the PDP has played for so many years is gradually frittering out and there is going to be an implosion within the party that will totally fragment it to the extent that it will be totally powerless.

His silence when activists were protesting for rule of law

I do not know the kind of newspapers you read, but I made my opinion known and at some point in time, I called for an interim government to be installed so that the entire malady that surrounded the executive could be cleared and we will move on. The nation was inundated by the soap opera that transpired with incapacitation of late President Yar'Adua and even though we had urged the PDP to declare his whereabouts and be transparent, nobody paid attention and we did not want to sound insensitive with the fact that the president is incapacitated and be more interested in politics. So, the sentiment of it all was something that PDP capitalised on. But it was not because we were not quick to articulate our views on the impact.

How he intends to tackle problems such as corruption, unemployment and power

Let me put this in proper context; campaigns have not begun. What I just did was to articulate my desire to run for the office. We are not suppose to engage in any campaign until INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission) says so. I can only give you observations that I have made concerning the things that I have seen in the country from a very constructive view-point. I believe the reason why corruption has been able to flourish is because there is an enabling environment. If you want to incapacitate those who participate in corruption, you will have to change the environment, not just engender punitive measures. It has to be juxtaposed with moral instruction for there to be meaningful change. For instance if you take a fish out of water, it cannot function; if you take an evil man into heaven, he cannot function, so there are certain mechanisms in government that make it possible for this charlatans to operate and until we dismantle this mechanism, corruption will (only) at best be tackled on the punitive level which is where you have the EFCC and all of those things. The 10 commandments didn't even save Israel, not to talk about EFCC saving Nigeria. We also need to understand that there is cooperation between these charlatans and those who are in the supervisory role; this is a major characteristic of the PDP as seen in the House of Representatives, where the speaker was indicted some months ago and we are right back at it. That is why I respect the former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, because he was bold enough to address that. When I become president, we will change the environment. If you go back a few years when Yar'Adua was installed as head of state, because they had nothing to offer, they came with a nominal seven point agenda with nothing on ground to corroborate the position. The laws of dialectical materialism by Karl Marx, which involve having a concept called the thesis, you find a concept that works against the thesis called the anti-thesis, then both of them synthesize together to form what is called synthesis which can be translated into chaos and this what PDP does. They create chaos, then they get a group within the party to oppose the chaos and then they resolve the problems within the two groups and synthesize the third position, which is where we are headed in the first place. So they create a problem and get a group of people to fight it, like when they created the Yar'Adua problem. They create that chaos and buy time using the diversionary tactics that makes people then think; oh this is an emergencey situation whilst they have nothing to offer. Government is not transparent in this country and they have refused to give room to the fourth estate (journalism) to do what they are mentally meant to do.

God and the presidential system

The whole concept of the presidential system comes from the bible, because God is our law-giver; that is how you get the legislature; God is our judge, so you have the judiciary; God is our King, you have the executive. That is how it was patterned and it was devised as a concept of government. We need a fourth concept that will articulate the plans on the purpose of the government to the people. That is how the press came about. The new Nigeria of our dreams that will soon transpire must be a government of integrity. It must understand that Nigeria is no longer a pariah nation, that we live in a millennium where the quest for innovation knows no frontiers and that we are no longer isolated in some dark continent. So, a Chris Okotie government will re-establish government in its true definition, where the people are a part of it and know what is going on.

His ability to build a structure that could win elections

If you take the government of this nation in tandem, maybe from the civil war, you will discover that there has always being a divine intervention at some point and recent events corroborate my saying. Look at former president, Olusegun Obasanjo who was out of government, incarcerated for a phantom coup, from where he became the president of Nigeria. He was not involved in any politics at that time, in terms of democratic process, but he became the head of state. The late Yar'Adua, relatively unknown with little or no quality pedigree more or less or his vice, Goodluck Jonathan, probably known regionally, not at on the national platform but today he is our President, because there is a divine intervention in the affairs of this country. That is why it imperative for a Chris Okotie to pontificate on the affairs of this country that identifies him as a credible aspirant for that office; so that when the opportunity presents itself, it will be easy to say this is the man.

Possibilities of merger with other political parties

Talks have already commenced and, in due time, we will unveil our strategy. The talks have always been on since as far back as the last two elections that I contested, where some political parties approached me because of my credibility. But I will not compromise my sense of purpose to give Nigerians the right leadership by jumping at people who do not share the same values as FRESH. Adherence to principles invokes respect, as all kind of overtures have come from different political parties with most of them having leaders who do not have the kind of intellectual capacity that is necessary for the kind of government they are trying to put in place. But I have stayed with my principle. I believe, just like Abraham Lincoln said, "I will study and wait."

What happens to his church if he becomes president

It will be bigger. When God was sending Jesus to the world, he wanted to make him the political leader of the world, not the spiritual leader. But for him to be the political leader, he had to take the sins of the world through his death. He will return as the governor, as stated in the bible, that will rule with the rod, as a political leader. By this procedure, God patterned Jesus to be a secular leader like Melchizedek during the time of Abraham, so that Jesus can become both a spiritual leader and a political leader. So, somebody like me, I am already a spiritual leader and I will be a political leader because earth was given to man to rule. Only a righteous government can exalt a nation.

Ethnicity and zoning formula in Nigerian political parties

We have gone beyond that. Zoning is a PDP mechanism and anybody clamouring for these issues cannot adduce evidence to substantiate that position. The best election in this country was won by a Muslim-Muslim ticket, that everyone across the nation voted for. Such clamour is a narrow perspective of politicians who are unable by any sweat of their imagination to acquire political recognition and so they think the only way they can is to polarize the polity along religious and ethnic divide. The process of galvanising ethnicity in political parties is anachronistic, because the experience we have disproves that philosophy. What Nigerians are looking for today is a credible candidate, irrespective of where he/she is from, because both the northerners and southerners will tell you that their leaders have betrayed them. Zoning is the business of the PDP; a gargantuan monstrosity and PDP is not Nigeria. I will run for the office of the president, irrespective of the fact that Mr. Jonathan is also from the South. The experience of his divorce and second marriage Entering the covenant of marriage is the highest possible level of spiritual responsibility anybody can assume, because it authenticates the mystery of the God head. I have found myself in a better place of understanding which gives a conscious of responsibility for this life.

Nomads or Pilgrims ?.

To be on a pilgrimage means that we are not just going anywhere in life. We are not just looking for the place where the grass is greener, but that

we realize there is a destination that is actually beyond life that God is calling us to and part of this pilgrimage means that God is our companion

along the way.

If you are a Nomad you just pick out wherever the next place seems right. Most Fulani Cattle Herdsmen do this they wander around the country in
search of Good grass and water .They also take care to avoid places where disease and predators abound.
. If you are a pilgrim you might have to go through some places that you don't want to go because the destination is beyond. And so we looked at

that and the fact that there is a big choice, a choice of repentance that has to come into our lives.
The primary difference between a nomad and pilgrim, is that you have decided not to listen to the lies around us the quareels, strifes and domestic

attritions we face at home and at work pale in comparison to the singular commandment of God.We should love our neighbour as ourselves, but

instead as we hear God's voice and respond to that by turning from the old ways and turning to His way. There is a saying "It is my way or the

highway" but The law of God says "it is God's way or the Highway to HELL ! "

Now this week we are looking at this issue of providence. This idea of providence is that God has created and controls the world so; therefore, God is

involved in the everyday life to provide and to protect. And so, that is what providence means, is that God is the one who protects in creation, God is

the one who provides for us in creation.

Now Psalm 121 is an amazing Psalm that talks about this issue of providence, of God being involved to watch over us and keep us. So I would like to

look at that verse together, but I would like us to read it together. So if you would pull it up on the screen, I would like us to stand and read the

scripture this morning together.

"I lift my eyes to the hills- where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot

slip- he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you- the

Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm- he will watch

over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore."

People might tell you that you are going nowhere because they hear about your dreams and aspirations and this is mostly out of thier ignorance as

they have no idea where you are coming from.

John 3:8 says clearly,The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is

with everyone born of the Spirit."

Let's pray: Lord we thank you for this your word and pray that you will open our eyes to whatever we need to know and hear, for we ask it in Jesus'

name. Amen
