7 Things Never to Say to Your Boss

Everyone has a boss. Even if you "work for yourself," you're still an employee to your client.

A big part of maintaining the boss-employee relationship is to never allow a boss to think you dislike your work, are incapable of doing it, or--worse--consider it beneath you.

[See the best careers for 2010.]

These sound like no-brainers, but many statements heard commonly around the workplace violate these basic rules. Looking for an example? Here are seven heard in workplaces all the time. They may seem ordinary, even harmless. But try reading these from your boss's point of view. You'll see right away why it's smart to never allow these seven sentences to pass your lips:

"That's not my job." You know what? A lot of bosses are simple souls who think your job is to do what's asked of you. So even if you're assigned a task that is, indeed, not your job, refrain from saying so. Instead, try to find out why your boss is assigning you this task--there may be a valid reason. If you believe that doing the task is a bad idea (as in, bad for the company) you can try explaining why and suggesting how it could be better done by someone else. This may work, depending on the boss. In any case, remember that doing what's asked of you, even tasks outside your job description, is good karma.

[See the 50 worst job interview mistakes.]

"It's not my problem." When people say something is not their problem it makes them look like they don't care. This does not endear them to anybody, especially the boss. If a problem is brewing and you have nothing constructive to say, it's better to say nothing at all. Even better is to pitch in and try to help. Because, ultimately, a problem in the workplace is everyone's problem. We're all in it together..

"It's not my fault." Yet another four words to be avoided. Human nature is weird. Claiming that something is not our fault often has the result of making people suspect it is. Besides, what's the real issue here? It's that something went wrong and needs to be fixed. That's what people should be thinking about--not who is to blame.

"I can only do one thing at a time." News flash: Complaining you are overworked will not make your boss feel sorry for you or go easier on you. Instead, a boss will think: (1) you resent your job, and/or (2) you aren't up to your job. Everybody, especially nowadays, feels pressured and overworked. If you're trying to be funny, please note that some sarcasm is funny and lightens the mood. Some just ticks people off.

[See how to answer 10 tricky interview questions.]

"I am way overqualified for this job." Hey, maybe you are. But the fact is, this is the job you have. You agreed to take it on and, while you may now regret that decision, it's still your job. Complaining that it's beneath you only makes you look bad. Plus, coworkers doing similar jobs may resent and dislike you. And guess what? Bosses will not think, "Oh, this is a superior person whom I need to promote." Nope, they'll think, "What a jerk."

"This job is easy! Anyone could do it!" Maybe what you're trying to convey here is that you're so brilliant your work is easy. Unfortunately, it comes off sounding more like, "This work is stupid." Bosses don't like hearing that any work is stupid. Nor do they really like hearing that a job is easy peasy. It belittles the whole enterprise. If a task is simple, be glad and do it as quickly as you can. Even "stupid" work needs to get done.

"It can't be done." Saying something can't be done is like waving a red flag in a boss's eyes. Even if the thing being suggested truly is impossible, saying it is can make you look ineffectual or incapable. Better to play detective. Why is the boss asking you to do whatever it is? What's the problem that needs to be solved? What's the goal? Search for doable ways of solving that problem or reaching that goal. That's what bosses really want. Most of them do not expect the impossible.

Last words: When in doubt, remember that silence really is golden.

Coalition Issues 24-Hour Ultimatum to Non- indigenes

As the Court of Appeal sitting in Sokoto fixed tomorrow for judgment in the case between the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) governorship candidate, Alhaji Maigari Dingyadi, and Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko, a group, Sokoto State Youth Coalition, has issued an ultimatum to non-indigenes and other religious groups to vacate the state within the next 24 hours for their safety, saying the condition will be disastrous if justice did not prevail.

It also raised alarm over alleged plan by some unscrupulous individuals to influence the decision of the judiciary by all means and cautioned the judiciary to tow the path of truth and fairness, warning that the situation in Sokoto needs proper handling and mistakes should be avoided.

Addressing journalists in Sokoto at the weekend, its Chairman, Comrade Abubakar Salame, said due to the peaceful and harmonious relationship existing between the indigenes and non indigenes, it had become imperative for non-indigenes to vacate the state for their safety, if justice is denied.

He maintained that people were ready to defend their franchise through the most acceptable process in modern times and threatened to make the state ungovernable, if justice is denied. Salame stated that the association was aware of attempt by some unpatriotic individuals to tamper with the decision of the judiciary by all means, stressing that such acts will only lead to anarchy in the state.

“We are aware that certain individuals are exploiting all possible avenues to tamper with the decision. This we assure the nation will only lead to a massacre of the highest order, as our people are not going to fold their arms to see their rights trampled upon”. He alleged that the group is aware that certain individuals are being sponsored by certain countries to create chaos and instability in the state and will not fold its arms and allow such thing to occur.

Army, Police launch manhunt for Okah

The Delta State Security Council rose from a crucial meeting in Asaba on Thursday with a resolution to arrest a prominent leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta over Monday's bomb blasts in Warri, Delta State.

Leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, Henry Okah.

A source at the meeting who made this known did not give the name of the MEND leader. However, our correspondent noted through his description that Mr. Henry Okah was the ex-militant chief in question.

The source told our correspondent that security agencies had collated some intelligence reports on his alleged involvement in the blasts, which aborted a conference on amnesty in the oil-rich city.

According to him, the report showed that the MEND leader was sighted in Warri on the day of the incident, ostensibly to supervise the operation.

The source said, "We have a report that an internationally acclaimed MEND leader (name withheld) was in Warri in the early hours of Monday, apparently, to supervise and ensure the success of the bomb attacks.

"The security council rose from the meeting with a resolution to further dig into the intelligence report which indicted the MEND leader in order to arrest him .

"Since his group has claimed responsibility for the action, he (MEND leader) has to explain his business in Warri shortly before the bomb blasts."

But one of Okah's lawyers, Mr. Wilson Ajuwa, denied that the MEND leader was in Warri on Monday.

He told our correspondent on the telephone that Okah was in South Africa where he had been attending to his health since last year.

He said, "I can tell you, as one of his lawyers, that he has been in South Africa since last year after meeting with the President (Yar'Adua).

"So, to the best of my knowledge, he couldn't have been in Nigeria on Monday, let alone be in Warri. They (security agencies) should 'rearrange' their intelligence.

"Their claim is therefore far from the mark. He is still taking care of his health in South Africa."

The MEND leader is one of the militants who recently benefited from an amnesty granted them by ailing President Umaru Yar'Adua.

His involvement in the blasts is said to have dominated discussions at the Asaba meeting of the security council.

The council comprises heads of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigeria Police Force and the State Security Service in the state.

The state Deputy Governor, Prof. Amos Utuama (SAN), and the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Ifeanyi Okonwa, were among the top government officials that were also in attendance at the meeting.

Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan presided over the meeting, which was shifted from its normal venue in Warri to Asaba, due to security reasons.

Though the deliberations and resolutions of the meeting were not made public, the Commissioner, Delta State Police Command, Mr. Yakubu Alkali, confirmed the meeting but said it was not unusual.

He said, "The Delta State Security Council met in Asaba on Wednesday but it was a usual security council meeting of the state, which usually holds on Wednesdays. Naturally, the issue of Monday's bomb blasts in Warri was discussed, but the meeting was not convened primarily because of the Monday's incident.

"But since the issue (Warri bomb blasts) borders on the security of the state, it was discussed at the meeting. I don't want to speak further on the matter; as you know, security matters are not discussed on the pages of newspapers."

Meanwhile, ex-militant leaders in the Niger Delta will meet on Sunday to deliberate on the recent security breaches in the region, especially Monday's bomb blasts.

It was learnt that the meeting was at the instance of Chief Government Ekpemukpolo (alias Tompolo) and the Secretary of the Federal Government Committee on Peace and Conflict Resolution in the Niger Delta, Mr. Kingsley Kuku.

Alkhali, in a telephone interview with our correspondent, said that they deliberated on Monday's bomb blasts among other security issues in the state.

He, however, refused to comment on the details of the deliberations at the meeting and their outcomes.

The meeting is expected to hold at a coastal community in either Delta State or Ondo State.

It was learnt that the ex-militant leaders might also deliberate on the state of the nation and the implementation of the post-amnesty programme by the Federal Government.

A source close to Ekpomupolo said, "Former leaders of the freedom fighters in the Niger Delta are meeting on Sunday to review the security situation in the Niger Delta, particularly the Monday bomb explosions in Warri.

"The meeting will also deliberate on the post-amnesty programme, especially the fate of the ex-militant commanders in the plans of the Federal Government and the March 28 encampment of their lieutenants by the Presidential Sub-Committee on Disarmament, Rehabilitation and Re-integration of the former militants in the Niger Delta, headed by the former Minister of Defence, Maj.-Gen. Godwin Abbe (rtd.).

"But a decision has not been taken on the venue of the meeting, it will either take place at our leader's (Tompolo) place in Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South West LGA, or the place of our representative in the presidential sub-committee on disarmament (Kuku) in Arogbo-Ijaw, Ese-Odo LGA of Ondo State."

When contacted on Wednesday, Kuku confirmed the meeting but declined further comments.

Man guilty of killing Nigerian in London

BBC
images?q=tbn:R62Q_Cr94IYcKM:%3Ca%20href=

A 22-year-old man, Chrisdian Johnson, has been found guilty of murdering a 16-year-old Nigerian, Oluwaseyi Ogunyemi, who was mauled by a dog before being stabbed in south London, the British Broadcasting Corporation reports.

advertisement

Johnson used his dog as a weapon on Ogunyemi before stabbing him in an attack in a park in Stockwell, the Old Bailey heard.

Oluwaseyi was brought down by one of the dogs as he tried to jump over a fence. He was then stabbed six times.

Johnson's brother Shane, 20, was cleared of murder.

The murder was described in court as unique because dangerous dogs were used as weapons to savage their victims before they were knifed.

Brian Altman QC, prosecuting, told jurors, "At the time of the attack, both dogs were unleashed, and chased and then brought down and savaged their victims, giving their human masters an advantage, enabling them then to access their victims in order to stab them with knives."

One witness said the behaviour of the youths in the attack was "vicious" and "mirrored the behaviour of a pack of wild animals," Mr. Altman told jurors.

Johnson was arrested as he fled from the scene of the murder in Larkhall Park bare-chested and covered in blood.

Johnson, of South Lambeth, south London, had been allowed to keep the animal only when a court imposed strict conditions on his ownership in late 2007.

He was also convicted of the attempted murder of the victim's 17-year-old friend, Hurui Hiyabu, said to have been lucky to survive after he was knifed nine times.

Detective Inspector Mick Norman said, "Seyi Ogunyemi was a young man of slight stature, suffering from Crohn's Disease.

"He was attacked by a dog released by Chrisdian Johnson and taken to the ground. While on the ground, he was stabbed where he lay. He didn't stand a chance."

Johnson was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on Friday (today).

Sacked ministers beg to return

SOME of the 42 ministers sacked, Wednesday, are intensifying lobby to return to the cabinet, according to reliable Presidency sources.

cabinetlast2.jpg

Also, the names of the first batch of ministerial nominees will get to senators for screening by Monday while the number of ministers to be appointed will be reduced from the present 42 to about 30, the sources added.

The decision to prune the number of ministers was informed by the desire of the Acting President to run a compact government that would facilitate the delivery of the most needed change in the country.

Already, inputs from governors and other opinion leaders are to be submitted not later than today for such nominees to undergo security screening before their names are forwarded to the National Assembly.

Quoting renown Physicist, Albert Eistein, who said ”it amounts to insanity to keep doing the same thing and expect different result”, el-Rufai told THISDAY in an e-mail interview yesterday that zoning has failed the country in the past and that there is no reason why it should be foisted on Nigerians again.

He said if the arrangement has not given Nigeria the best leadership and yet we still want to continue with it, "the logical conclusion is that we do not desire the best leadership and are satisfied with mediocrity."

He added: "My opinion is that popularity with the electorate in a free and fair election should be the sole basis for winning elective positions and merit should likewise be the sole basis for appointive positions."

He said it is imperative for the Acting President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure the full implementation of the report of the Justice Muhammadu Uwais' committee on electoral reform, warning that without the reforms, the country will witness the same mess it has seen in past elections.

The former minister said Nigeria has to mature in democracy, adding that the best way to achieve this will be to leave the assessment entirely to Nigerians who will appraise the aspirants with their votes.

On the choice of leaders to look for in making decisions at future polls, the former minister said Nigerians should look at the aspirants' past records.

"How can a person change his character in old age? If when an aspirant was in the prime of his life he was a failure at leadership, a champion of corruption and a setback to Nigeria, how would you expect a different result later in life? So my advice to Nigerians is to look at their past. By their past shall you know them," he added.

ElRufai denied reports in some quarters that he had offered himself to work with Acting President Goodluck Jonathan, saying what he said was he was willing to support the Acting President to run in 2011 "if he can show that he has the capacity to make the changes that Nigeria needs."

He added: "My preoccupation is to advance the cause of good governance and democracy in Nigeria without sitting behind a desk in a government office."

Rites of passage for Matthew Imerion, the entertainer obituaries_20100130_thestate_kbo99207_184029.jpgBy Alemma Aliu Ozioruva

It was tributes all the way on Sunday, as family and friends of late artiste and script writer, Matthew held a memorial service in his honour. Imerion died in Carolina, United States of America on January 27. He had cancer of the liver and pancreas.

Though his remains were interred in the US, the family had the traditional burial rites in Ewohimi, Esan Central Local Council and then the church service at St Paul's Catholic Church, Benin City.

His first son, Matthew Imerion Junior, an advert executive described his late father as very strict and a perfectionist who would be missed greatly. "He was a perfectionist, he likes doing things well, I will miss his pursuit for perfection although it gets us into trouble with him a lot of times but that is what I will miss most because he always tried to make sure we did everything the right way and I will remember what he always said and by that I will live accordingly."

His wife, Princess Ajoke, however, said she is now married to Jesus the husband of all widows for protection and ability to carry on the family pursuits. "He was my best friend, a loving father and a loving husband. I am going to miss his wahala. There is a saying that Jesus is the husband of the widow so I am Jesus' wife now and he will manage my home for me".

Ajoke's younger sister, Mrs Lawuyi Lawal, a Kaduna- based poultry farmer confirmed the Imerion's family insistence that their late father was a disciplinarian; "Matt Imerion, Bross Matto like we normally called him was a nice guy, a very good disciplinarian, very faithful husband, a loving husband and a brother-in-law, he was a nice man.

"We are really going to miss him, since he died, we've been crying, he was a nice man, a very good father and husband. God will help her (Princess) to fill the vacuum.

A close friend of Matt as he was fondly called, Okoye Frank, an ICT Engieneer, said his loss was a blow to the entire nation and urged the children to sustain the legacy he has left behind.

"Matt was a friend and a father to so many of us, he was a legend in his own right and unfortunately we cannot challenge God's will and in all things we are supposed to give thanks to God but I will say we've lost a rare gem both in the family and as a nation, we pray that wherever he is, he goes and intercede for Nigeria and not just his family. The people he left behind should live according to the tenets he preached while he was alive and to do what it takes to ensure that his does not die in vain, his work should live and precede him.

He was diagnosed of cancer in August 2009 and was told he had just six months to live but he succumbed to nature's call few weeks to the six months estimated. "His death is a big vacuum which I cannot describe and in fact since August when we heard the news we have been crying everyday and I even told my children I am not sure I will cry if he dies because they told him that he had cancer of the liver and pancreas normally people have one kind of cancer but he had two and we've been crying since August last year, he told me that the doctors gave him six months to live and if you count six months to today, February would have made it six months, so he died on the 27th, on my last born's birthday, so it was a big blow to," the wife had told The Guardian shortly after the man's death in January.

The late Matt wrote the script of the famous television drama, Hotel De Jordan.

Imerion was born April 4, 1945, in Warri. He was educated in the Nigerian school system, and was a graduate of Pat Robertson University in Virginia Beach. Mr. Imerion had also been invited by Benedict College and other universities in Nigeria, to host several workshops on Theater and African Dance.

In 2004, he retired from CBN Studios Nigeria as director of programmes - state and local. He then moved to America, where he realised his dream of becoming a permanent resident, passing away shortly before becoming a U.S. citizen.

He is survived by his wife, six children, Ruby, Naomi, Matthew Jr., Ose, Amy and Duke Imerion, all of Benin City. He is also survived by siblings, Ceceila and Mary of Benin City, Nigeria, and Grace of Columbia. He leaves behind very special nephews, Dr. Sylvester Osazuwa Odigie of Atlanta, GA, and Fredrick Odigie and wife, Bernadette Odigie of Columbia.

The government on Thursday temporarily recalled its ambassador to
Libya, Isa Mohammed, following comments credited to Libyan President,
Maummar Gaddafi which advised that Nigeria should be partitioned into
two nations along Christian and Muslim lines, to avert frequent
sectarian violence.
thumbnail.php?file=Gaddafi__617784292.jpg&size=article_medium

Nigerian Senate through its President, David Mark on Wednesday reprimanded the outspoken leader for his comments while referring to him as a 'madman.'

Gaddafi was addressing visiting students from multiple African universities in Libyan capital, Tripoli when he made the comment.

Sources at Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the recall was with immediate effect adding that Nigeria was formally protesting against the insensitive comments credited to the former Chairman of the African Union.

"The recall however does not affect the diplomatic ties between both nations," the source added.

In a related development, the House of Representatives today passed a resolution condemning Gaddafi for his comments and urged the central government to break ties with the OPEC member country.

The House summoned the Libyan Ambassador to Nigeria to appear before it to explain Gaddafi’s comments to legislators.

The resolution was moved by House Committee Chairman on the Air Force, Hon. Halims Agoda.

"Gadaffi’s statement is very inciting, we must condemn the man so that we can move forward as a nation.

"Our founding fathers worked very hard to bring us to where we are today, our differences have been our strength," Agoda said.

In a related incident :

Mark described the Libyan dictator as "a mad man" who did not deserve any form of publicity for his utterances.

He said this when Senator Ayim Ude drew the attention of the Senate to Gaddafi's comments published in the media.

Ude had while contributing to a debate on the bomb blast which disrupted the post-amnesty dialogue in Warri, Delta State, on Wednesday, stressed the need for the Senate to caution individuals from making inflammatory comments.

Responding, Mark said, Udeh, with all due respect, why do you want to give a mad man that level of publicity? But I'm surprised that you are giving that any publicity at all.

"A mad man who said the same thing about Switzerland, he said the same thing about England, he said the same thing about every other country. And then you want to give that any other prominence at all.

"I don't think he deserves any mention at all. Truly, in my candid opinion, I don't think he even deserves our attention."

Other senators who spoke on the issue after the days' sitting also condemned the Libyan leader for speaking on Nigeria, a country they said he knew nothing about.

Commenting on the issue, Senator Abubakar Sodangi (PDP Nasarawa), called on Nigerians to discountenance the Libyan leader's comments because he lacked knowledge about Nigeria.

Senator Smart Adeyemi (PDP Kogi) said the fact that Nigeria and Nigerians had survived a civil war and various ethno-religious crises was "a clear message to all our enemies that we as a people are sworn to a common destiny."

According to him, "Gaddafi must realise that Nigeria is not Libya and (he) must therefore understand that he is not in a position to dictate to us how we live as a people.

"Nigerians are not religious bigots, even in the midst of poverty. We may have crisis now but certainly, we shall overcome the problems like we did in the past."

Gaddafi was quoted as having called for the division of Nigeria along religious lines. He had argued that such a split would end the religious crisis that has led to the loss of hundreds of lives in Africa's most populous country over the past 10 years.

AKEEM LASISI

A documentary film by award-winning filmmaker, Femi Odugbemi, directs attention to threatened Yoruba praise poetry, Oriki, writes AKEEM LASISI

pix201003170545590[1].jpg

As the tape rolls over, prolific chanter, Suleman Ayilara, popularly called Ajobiewe, zooms into view with his gripping voice. The artist that has navigated the length and breath of Yoruba theatre and film industry relishes opening his performances with homage chants and invocation on his Ila Orangun, Osun State root. In Oriki, however, he begins by singing the oriki of the Elese lineage.

By the choice of the artist who released an album titled Oriki Yoruba about two years ago, the producer and director, Femi Odugbemi, is able to capture the viewers' attention while also registering the import of the documentary. And while the didactic essence of the documentary is sustained throughout its about 25-minute duration, it is such dramatic interjection that keeps the viewer waiting for more even at the end of it.

As compact as it is, for instance, celebrated Yoruba actors such as Lere Paimo, Kola Oyewo and Peter Fatomilola, are made to play different roles to buttress the exposition that Odugbemi's resource persons offer on oriki, the Yoruba praise poetry, in the film. Among the most memorable scenes here is the one in which Paimo, otherwise called Eda Onileola, dances grandly to portray the overall concern of the researcher in the film - the desire to save African culture from unbridled westernisation.

The work is predicated on the fact that among the Yoruba and a lot of other cultures across Africa, a name is more than a means of differentiating one person from another. It is a serious and time-honoured means of giving a newborn child an identity. Amongst Yoruba families, a name communicates the rich, colourful and vibrant heritage and history of families. It also informs their hopes and aspirations for the newborn. Oriki is the oral Yoruba poetry chanted in salute of history and heritage often reaching back hundreds of years.

Globalisation trends have led to the blurring of borderlines, geographically and culturally. "Indigenous cultures are dissolving, clearing the way for one unified global phenomenon. Increasing urban shifts and a strong emphasis on global compliance have left important aspects of cultural identities under attack. And as more people adopt western ways of thinking and understanding, the threat of extinction becomes more glaring, more imminent, more inevitable," the producer asserts in an introduction to the documentary.

As Odugbemi's resource persons, which include writer and actor, Adebayo Faleti, culture scholar and promoter at the University of Ibadan, Prof. Adetoun Ogundeji, and a legal practitioner, Mr. Dele Farotimi, note in the documentary, Oriki has serves multiple purposes among the Yoruba. Apart from being a piece of poetry that excites and inspires the hearer, it harbours cultural and historical information about the person or community being celebrated. They identify four major types of Oriki - the one for individuals, one for prominent people like kings, one for a particular lineage and one for communities or towns.

According to Ogundeji, the Oriki usually reflects the circumstance of one's birth. It reflects the heroic deeds of one's forebears, just as it may indicate their weaknesses as well.

"Ãn Yorubaland, you don't just give names to children," Ogundeji says. "The elders would, in those days, consult the heritage as represented by Ifa. And in the case of oriki orile, it reflects connection between various families of the same lineage but who live in different towns."

Although Odugbemi secures another commentator who expresses grave concerns over fetish tendencies he locates in some elements of oriki, his sources are generally passionate about the orature. In the case of Farotimi, he recalls how he gives his children names that relate to his family chain, as exemplified by his naming a daughter of his Igbayilola, an invocation of his mother's name.

He notes, "When people say our names are demonic, I remind them that the English names many of them give their children have meanings they don't seem to know. 'Diana', is, for instance, actually the name of a goddess."

They all fear that westernisation is fast eroding the Oriki phenomenon, but Odugbemi cites a little hope in the fact that some modern musicians have begun to experiment with the praise forms in their works.

On the making of the documentary, he explains that his choice of the resource persons is based on those who not only have a deep knowledge of it, but also feel strongly that it should not die. "One thing about a documentary is that it must be based on facts. That is why your research must double-check facts because the preponderance of opinions must be in favour of the stated facts."

Odugbemi's exploits as a documentary film producer has been recognised in many places. Another recent work titled Bariga Boys is on the nomination list of the African Movie Academy Awards for 2010. In terms of what motivates him to work in this area, he says the need to spread information and preserve heritage is paramount. As a result, he adds, he often gives the documentary films to television houses to air. Ãt is more of a labour of love than anything," Odugbemi says.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said in Abeokuta on Wednesday that the committee would be joined by a Deputy Inspector-General of Police among top police officers, who would visit the accident scene near the Babcock University, Ilisan, stretch of the expressway.

Adejobi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, who said the committee and police officers would visit the robbery accident scene in company with the officers of the state police command, did not, however, say why the committee had decided to visit the site.

Controversy had continued to trail the incident, which occurred on the night of July 31, 2009, but which some people posted on the internet, claiming that it occurred in the later part of February, this year.

The author of the internet version of the story equally narrated how the driver of the luxury (passenger) bus was ordered by the robbers, who had dispossessed the occupants, to run over some of the passengers who were commanded to lie on the road.

In the 2009 accident, a truck driver, one Idahosa, claimed he did not know that the robbers, who struck around 10pm on Friday, July 31, 2009, had placed a barricade on the road, ostensibly to shield some passengers they had ordered to lie on the road.

Idahosa, whose truck, loaded with garri, lost control and crashed into the bush after running over the victims, narrated how he had to climb a tree to avoid the rampaging robbers, who had trailed him and his assistant into the bush.

The committee had summoned the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ogbonna Onovo, and other police chiefs to appear before it while the driver of the luxury bus, which was coming from the Eastern part of the country to Lagos, and the driver of the truck, whose vehicle inadvertently ran over the distressed passengers, had appeared and testified before the committee.

It is unclear what the committee plans to do with its visit to the site eight months after the incident.

In spite of the resolution by the House of Representatives for the redeployment of Batch ‘A' 2010 NYSC members from Plateau State, some of the corps members have rejected the redeployment.

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent who visited the Jos Orientation Camp on Thursday, reports that no fewer than 1,015 out of the 1,211 corps members have registered, with more still arriving.

Some of them said that they were ready to serve their fatherland in Plateau, and that the security problem was a national issue not limited to a particular state.

Joshua Danjuma, a youth corps member from Gombe State, said, "I am not seeking for any redeployment because I have made up my mind that since I've already prepared my mind to serve the country, I will definitely stay and serve.

"My advice to government is to provide adequate security for all Nigerians. It is not only in Plateau."

Yetunde Aluko, a corps member from Osun State, said she would not have considered redeployment but for the pressure from her parents and other family members.

Sam Nkwopara, the Head of Public Relations in Plateau NYSC, said that redeployment forms were given to the entire Batch ‘A' corps members but that less than 400 had indicated their interest to redeploy.

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) -- A Walmart store announcement ordering black people to leave brought chagrin and apologies Wednesday from leaders of the company, which has built a fragile trust among minority communities.PHOTO TAG:Virginia Tinsley, of Washington Township, N.J., answers a question Wednesday, March 17, 2010, outside a Wal Mart store in Washington Township, N.J., where she and others complained Sunday about comments that came over the store's public address system. 40.jpg?x=200&y=138&q=85&sig=x_pJxuav1HlgkoI_kQ0zsQ-- A male voice came over the public-address system Sunday evening at a store in Washington Township, in southern New Jersey, and calmly announced: "Attention, Walmart customers: All black people, leave the store now."

Shoppers in the store at the time said a manager quickly got on the public-address system and apologized for the remark. And while it was unclear whether a rogue patron or an employee was responsible for the comment, many customers expressed their anger to store management.

"I want to know why such statements are being made, because it flies in the face of what we teach our children about tolerance for all," said Sheila Ellington, who was in the store at the time with a friend. "If this was meant to be a prank, there's only one person laughing, and it's not either one of us."

Ellington, of Monroe, and her friend Patricia Covington said they plan to boycott the retailer until they're assured the issue has been addressed so it doesn't happen again.

The pair said they were stunned when they heard the announcement and initially believed they had misheard it. But once the words sank in, they grew angry.

"I depended on Walmart for all my needs, because the store has pretty much everything you could want," Covington said. "But until this issue is addressed in a way I'm comfortable with, I can't walk through those doors again."

Officials with Wal-Mart Stores Inc., based in Bentonville, Ark., said that the announcement was "unacceptable" and that they're trying to determine who made it and how it happened.

"We are just as appalled by this incident as our customers," the company said in a statement. "Whoever did this is just wrong and acted in an inappropriate manner. Clearly, this is completely unacceptable to us and to our customers."

This is not the first time the retailer has faced such problems.

There have been several past instances of black customers claiming they were treated unfairly at Walmart stores, and the company faced lawsuits alleging that women were passed over in favor of men for pay raises and promotions.

In February 2009, the retailer paid $17.5 million to settle a class action lawsuit alleging racial discrimination in its hiring of truck drivers.

And the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued the company in May 2009, claiming some Hispanic employees at a Sam's Club subsidiary in California were subjected to a hostile work environment. That suit alleges managers failed to stop repeated verbal harassment, including the use of derogatory words, against employees of Mexican descent.

However, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has said the company has worked hard in recent years to show it cares about diversity.

Bill Mitchell, a former Walmart employee who was shopping Wednesday at the store, said that he was saddened to hear about the announcement but that "as a black man, I've heard worse things."

As customer Sharon Osbourne, of Williamstown, left the store Wednesday, she called the announcement "appalling, stupid and sad."

Omo the kokomaster don fall in love ? Ogbonofelifeli Genevieve Nnaji seems to be saying Me and Dbanj are dating ! Is this another case of i am Hot you are HOTT !
Genevieve Nnaji "I can only say that I would like to keep my private life private and I really don't have anything to say"

But if one part of a couple reveals that he is going out with someone as high profile as yourself, it makes the story credible if you can actually confirm this,
Genevieve "Dbanj is an adult and he has said something. Let's just leave it at that, "

But can you clarify the whole thing by simply conforming or denying it?
Genevieve "I don't want to talk about my private life. I don't do it. I am well aware that people will say things. People have been calling me to find things out, but I am not going to say anything. I have learnt over the years that no matter what I say, people will say and believe what they like, you can not please everybody. This is my own way of handling things. I just don't talk about my private life. It's the one thing I can control"

But is it real or a publicity stunt? Is Dbanj lying?
Genevieve "Does he lie?"

By that are you inferring that he wasn't telling a lie and what he said is true.
Genevieve "I am not inferring or insinuating anything. One person has said something and that really is enough. I am not saying I will never talk about it, but for now I do not wish to say anything about the matter."

Information Minister Dora Akunyili announced the decision by Acting President Goodluck Jonathan at the same time that the state-run broadcaster broke the news to citizens long confused about who remained in charge of the oil-rich nation. Akunyili said Jonathan would issue a statement soon on who will now serve in the Cabinet.

"The acting president gives no reason for the dissolution," Akunyili told reporters Wednesday night. "There is no vacuum in the government as permanent secretaries will take charge."

The Cabinet remained stocked with loyalists of President Umaru Yar'Adua, a Muslim from the country's north. Some cabinet members had begun to shift allegiances from Yar'Adua to Jonathan, a Christian from the country's south, as time passed. Akunyili herself had previously circulated a memo to the cabinet calling on it to install Jonathan as acting president — providing a rare public voice for those uncomfortable with Yar'Adua's long absence from the country.

The move is the first major step by Jonathan, a quiet 52-year-old biologist from the Niger Delta who largely remained quiet as a constitutional crisis gripped the nation over Yar'Adua's absence. Yar'Adua left Nigeria in late November for medical treatment at a Saudi Arabian hospital over what his physician described as serious heart condition.

Though the nation's constitution offers clear steps for president to hand over power in his absence, Yar'Adua chose not to implement them. For months, many wondered how Yar'Adua would rule Africa's most populous nation from abroad.

The National Assembly empowered Jonathan to become acting president in a vote Feb. 9. Two weeks later, Yar'Adua's handlers apparently whisked the ill president back to the presidential palace in an ambulance surrounded by a military convoy. However, Yar'Adua still has not been seen publicly since returning.

Jonathan largely shied away from making major decisions since becoming acting president, though he did move some cabinet ministers loyal to Yar'Adua into new positions. While fears of a coup permeated the country, which has a long history of military dictators, top officials in the armed forces promised not to intervene.

Those forces likely will be kept at bay, even with Jonathan asserting more power, said analyst Charles Dokubo of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs.

"I think the Nigerian people have been so quiet and have been allowing things to unfold in an evolutionary manner," Dokubo told The Associated Press. Yar'Adua supporters "might make noise about it, but I don't think it will lead to any other upheaval or anarchy in the country."

Still Jonathan remains largely unknown in Nigeria, a former deputy state governor who rose to the governor's office after his predecessor was indicted on corruption charges. Now, as Yar'Adua remains ill and unseen, Jonathan finds himself at the helm as the West African country faces endemic corruption, simmering militancy in the oil-rich Niger Delta and long-running religious tensions that have led to hundreds of deaths in recent months.

Troubled Plateau State experienced yet another wave of violence in the early hours of Wednesday, March 17, with at least 11 people killed in Riyom, just outside Jos, state radio was reported as saying.

Speaking to NEXT over the phone, Davou Rwang, a resident of Jos, said, "It is true. We heard 11 people have been killed in Ryom, just outside of Jos."

Another resident, who lives around Jos and asked not to be named, told us that the attacks were carried out by some groups.

"There were carried out by three groups because three villages were attacked," he said. “They also set houses ablaze."

The police said they have begun investigating the incident.

This latest killing comes only days after the Army said it had intercepted a truck conveying 44 people suspected to be militants, on their way to Jos. Jos was rocked by violence 10 days ago, when mostly women and children were killed at night, in another settlement just outside the city.

The March 7 violence occurred weeks after hundreds died in four days of sectarian violence.

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a woman, Ezine Paul, for allegedly selling his younger sister's 24-day-old baby for N30,000.

Ezine's 28-year-old sister, Uju Gladys, was said to have been impregnated out of wedlock in 2009.

Because of her inability to locate the man responsible for the pregnancy, her elder brothers and sisters were said to have resolved that she should be living with Ezine in Ipaye, a suburb of Lagos, pending her delivery.

Gladys told journalists at the premises of the command's Public Relations Officer, on Monday that she delivered a baby girl on December 12, 2009 and her sister made away with the baby on January 5, 2010.

She said when she confronted her, Ezine claimed that the family directed her to take the baby to a motherless babies' home so that she could get proper upbringing.

She said she was taken aback when she contacted her elder siblings and they denied knowledge of the alleged family resolution.

Gladys said that based on the advice of her sister, Chineye Onuoha, she reported the case at Ayobo Police Station, where the Divisional Police Officer, Mr. Julius Isijola, led some policemen to arrest Ezine.

Ezine confirmed to journalists that she sold the baby to a Ghanaian, whom she met through an unnamed female neighbour..

She said that she was paid N30,000 while the neighbour told her that she also received N20,000 from the buyer.

She said that she was told that the buyer had since travelled out of the country with the baby.

The command's Public Relations Officer, Mr. Frank Mba, said that efforts were on to track down the female accomplice and possibly the alleged buyer.

He added that during investigation, detectives discovered that Ezine had earlier engaged in suspected illegal adoption of a baby.

Mba said that investigation revealed that a seven-year-old girl, Geneva, who the suspect had been claiming to be her daughter, was not her biological daughter.

Confirming the allegation, Ezine said that she got the girl about seven years ago allegedly at the General Hospital, Onitsha with the aid of a nurse when she could not bear a child.

She claimed to have paid about N70,000 for the "adoption."

"I did that in ignorance. But now, I know that I engaged in illegality as regards Geneva," she told journalists.

Mba displayed photographs of different persons and assorted charms allegedly recovered from the suspect's wardrobe.

Abuja:
It was another day of protest in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja on Tuesday, as a coalition of youth leaders from across the country stormed Abuja with a call for the removal of all the heads of security agencies in the country for failing to stop the recent carnage in Dogon Na Hauwa area of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State..

The protesters, who represented professionals, entrepreneurs, artistes, activists and students, also demanded President Umaru Yar'Adua's removal from office if he could no longer perform his duties as the President of Nigeria.

Some of the notable artistes who marched with the youths were Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charley Boy; Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Six Foot Plus; as well as columnist, Dele Momodu.

In a four-point petition addressed to the President of the Senate, David Mark, the protesters said the Jos situation made it clear that the Nigerian state was incapable of securing the lives and limbs of its citizens, given the manner people were slaughtered in Jos.

"We demand an urgent overhaul of the security and intelligence apparatus in our country; the heads, the structures and the people that power the structures need to go, and they need to go now.

"We also demand that President Yar'Adua should resume, resign or be removed so that Nigerians know who their leaders are, and the cabal usurping the Presidency can finally be dislodged," the statement said.

The protesters demanded that the Federal Government should, within one month, produce a realistic plan for solving the perennial power problem in the country.

They also pressed for the speedy conclusion of the electoral reform process, insisting that there could be no credible elections under the present arrangement.

"Nigerians aged below 35 constitute more that 70 per cent of the population and we are putting you on notice that we intend to begin to use this power. This is only the first of many steps we are going to be taking to ensure that our leaders take us seriously.

"We will come out massively to vote this time around, we will be watching closely and we will not leave election centres until all votes are counted. Anyone who rigs elections this time around will have themselves to blame. Young people across the country - from the North to the South - will be coming out in their millions and they will strongly resist any attempt to rig," they insisted.

Meanwhile, the march suffered a hitch when policemen barricaded the main entrance to the National Assembly.

After hours of waiting, the youths forcefully made their entry through the gate, breaking the wall of fence made by the police.

But they eventually could not enter into the arcade of the complex where protesters are usually allowed to gather to make their demands because the National Assembly security closed the iron gates and deployed hundreds of armed policemen to keep the protesters off.

The intervention of Charley Boy and other artistes to get the leadership of the National Assembly to come out to speak with the youths failed.

Oputa at a point came out to announce to the protesters that the legislators had left the complex through the back gate.

But incidentally, the House Committee Chairman on Youths, Mr. Oyedokun Oladepo, appeared, claiming that he was sent by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Dimeji Bankole.

But the youths refused to listen to him. They said they would rather go away than speak with any person lesser than the President of the Senate or the Speaker.

Some of the artistes were, however, not happy as the youths walked out on the lawmaker, as they expressed the view that the Speaker's representative was good enough.
