Some irate Ijaw youths suspected to be ex-militants, on Friday evening invaded Iju-Osun in the Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State and burnt parts of the town.

The youths, according to eyewitnesses, killed five people, razed four buildings and kidnapped the monarch, Oba Samuel Oyegbemi.

The Police Public Relations Officer in charge of the state command, Mr. Aremu Adeniran, who confirmed the incident, however said only two lives were lost, while the palace of the monarch and two other houses were torched.

Adeniran confirmed that the monarch, who he described as a very nice man, was abducted by the irate youths..

The police spokesman explained that the Ijaw youths were probably on a revenge mission following the discovery of the body of an ex-militant in Iju-Osun on Thursday.

He explained that the people of Iju-Osun could not account for the death of the ex-militant, hence the invasion of the town by the irate Ijaw youths.

He said, “Security has been beefed up to avert further loss of lives. Our men are there. We are making efforts to release the monarch. The man is good. No report of any clash was recorded before the discovery of the corpse in the town.”

Our correspondent learnt that the invasion of the town by the ex-militant, followed the mysterious death of a middle-aged Ijaw man, identified simply as Samuel in the town.

The man, who was from Arogbo Ijaw in Ese Odo Local Government, according to sources, was a father of one of the militants and had resided at Iju-Osun town for many years.

The son, whose identity could not be ascertained at press time, was said to have contacted his colleagues and in retaliation, arrived in the town on Friday in company with armed youths.

A high chief in the town, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told reporters on Friday that the militants shot sporadically and later set several houses, including the palace of the Olughogho of Iju –Osun, ablaze.

Eyewitness said residents of neigbouring towns like Ajagba, Akotogbo and other villages in the area had also fled their areas in anticipation of possible invasion by the ex-militants. About six towns in the area have been diserted as residents were said to be taking refuge at Ode-Irele and the state capital.

Did Libyan soldiers kill 6 Nigerians ?

BY VICTOR AHIUMA-YOUNG & LAIDE AKINBOADE INDICATIONS emerged, weekend, that no fewer than six Nigerians had been killed in the ongoing political crisis in Libya while more than 12,440 others were trapped in Tripoli and Benghazi.Gaddafi2%5B1%5D.jpg?width=300

This came as 1,243 Nigerians who had been stranded in Tripoli were evacuated, yesterday, with the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, using three aircraft for the operation.

Vanguard learnt that the six Nigerians were killed on their way to Tripoli from Benghazi after a bus they were travelling in came across Libyan soldiers who ordered the driver to return to where he was coming from. When the driver reportedly refused, the soldiers opened fire on the bus and the six Nigerians were killed instantly.

It was gathered that the whereabout of the only survivor remained unknown, though he was believed to have managed to join other trapped Nigerians at the Tripoli airport.

Giving details of the predicament of Nigerians in Libya in a statement, a group named Destinymakers Community Christian Campaigns & Action Network, DCCCAN, said that of the Nigerians stranded in Tripol 1000 were women; 170 babies; 5,720 youths, and 235 men, giving a total of 7,125. The group said that in Benghazi, there were 306 children; 2, 502 women and 2, 507 men, giving a total of 5, 315.

The statement said: “In the wake of crises in the Mid-east, none has posed more danger to Nigerians like the on going onslaught and massacre in Libya. Statistics put together by our organization through, Mr. Ben Igbokwe, and Mr. Solomon Okoduwa, both Nigerians at the Tripoli airport shows the figure of Nigerians stranded in Tripoli as women 1000, babies, 170, youths 5, 720, men, 235 giving a total of 7,125 Nigerians at Tripoli airport alone. Also, another Nigerian in Benghazi, Mr. Samson Aja, gave the latest figure of Nigerians in Benghazi as, children 306, women 2, 502, men 2, 507, giving a total of 5, 315 Nigerians in Benghazi.

“In the same vein, six Nigerians were reported to have died today (Saturday) on their way to Tripoli from Benghazi. We gathered from the only survival, that on their way to Tripoli on a bus they came across Libyan soldiers who ordered the driver to return to where he was coming from, but the driver refused, only for the soldiers to open fire on the bus and six Nigerians were killed instantly. The where about of one is unknown as the only survivor managed to join others at the Tripoli airport.

FG evacuates more Nigerians

The Federal Government, yesterday, evacuated more Nigerians from crisis-turned Libya. Director General of National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, the coordinating agency for the operation, Muhammad Sani_Sidi, said three aircraft arrived Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, yesterday, with 1243 Nigerians who had been stranded in Tripoli due to the on_going political crisis in Libya.

He said: “The operation has witnessed the deployment of four chartered planes with capacity to accommodate 500 passengers each as well as a commercial aircraft that could accommodate around 200 passengers. So far, the total number of Nigerians that had been evacuated is 2278.”

The agency targeted 2000 Nigerians initially, but discovered that more stranded Nigerians continued to troop out from remote areas of Libya to Tripoli Airport, seeking to be evacuated back to Nigeria.

Director, North and Horn of Africa Division, Mr. Timloh B. Nkem, who represented the Minister of Foreign Affairs; Mr Odein Ajumogobia, said about 3000 additional Nigerians had been registered with the Embassy official in Libya, indicating their desire to be evacuated.

The returnees, who looked exhausted and tired from the stress in Libya, commended President Goodluck Jonathan for initiating the move for their evacuation. Two of them delivered babies at Tripoli Airport while awaiting the arrival of chartered aircraft from Nigeria.

Another pregnant, woman among the returnees, who simply gave her name as Mary, said “if not for the evacuation, I wonder how I could deliver in that hard condition in crowded open camp.

Kidnappers kill 38 policemen in Abia

The Abia Police Command has said 38 of its officers to kidnappers in the last few months.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Jonathan Johnson, made this known on Monday in Umuahia, while presenting the arms surrendered by some fleeing kidnappers to the state's governor, Theodore Orji.

Mr. Johnson said 10 officers were injured during the operations, six of them had been discharged from the hospital while the remaining four were still receiving treatment.

The commissioner said that the arms were recovered during the second amnesty programme, which the state government cancelled and that that the programme was yielding results before its cancellation.

Mr. Johnson said the arms were recovered in the kidnappers' camps.

``Some of the arms are 20 AK 47, 12 locally made AK 47, seven assault rifles, one general purpose machine gun, four rocket launchers, 15 pistols and 12 dynamites...

``Others are 23 double-barrelled guns 106 assorted magazines, gas cylinders, tool boxes and one G3riffle,'' he said.

The commissioner thanked the government for empowering the police to combat the crime, stressing that those who died during the operations had paid the supreme price to make Abia free of kidnapping.

Speaking while inspecting the arms, Mr. Orji said the police should compile the names of the dead officers for the state government to compensate their families.

The governor expressed the sympathy with the police command the bereaved families, stressing that Abia is now a safe heaven for investors.

``There was a time when Abia was synonymous with kidnapping. We tried the amnesty option and it failed before inviting the army to come to our aid,'' he said.

Mr. Orji said that the second amnesty programme was partially successful because of the harvest of arms by the committee.

The governor commended the police for their gallantry. ``I know we have efficient police force in the country but they lack adequate fire power to combat crime and criminals.

``You cannot expect a policeman to confront a criminal with a rapid machine gun,'' he remarked.

The governor stressed that his administration would continue to provide the enabling environment for the force.

What Naija Girls Must Know About Violence Love

Violence love is never new to us. It happens every day with all kind of people. Violence in any form isn’t love it’s just to maneuver you. It has the possibility of killing somebody even if the person never meant to kill. You can even notice more signs as time goes on for example short signs of bad-tempered envy, endless phone call or an enquiry to know your whereabouts and who you go out with every time. Initially, you have a sense of pride that you are desired and wanted.Violence love is quite devastating; victims of such relationships are either dead or end up in hospital. Just as you think, nobody has ever taken it seriously. Nobody believes violence love would ever happen to him or her. It’s dangerous for you to involve in any form of violence love. The more time you spend in violence love the more deadly it becomes. It’s better imagined than experienced because you think the one you truly love will change. Except you walk out of violence love your partner may not change because habits are die hardNkechi, a 20 year old undergraduate once said, “Prince’s name rings bell in campus. I never knew why he prefers me to other girls because he’s rich; He rented a house for me and furnished it, lavished me with money and made me feel unique. Not quite long, four months to be correct he suddenly changed. He started calling me names and seriously warned me never to give any guy my attention. I couldn’t believe him till the day he threatened to kill me with his gun if I ever thought of leaving him.According to John Dobson in his book; Love must be tough, girls must be tough too with love. It doesn’t mean you should be strict in relationship no! It simply means that those real instances of abuse that threatens relationships must be noticed and promptly dealt with within the context of love.If violence is not quickly dealt with in relationship, Partners may one day use “violence means” at the slightest disagreement to settle differences. The earlier the better, or else those violence acts will become habit that is difficult to break!

pix201008093134215.jpgThe killing of a chartered accountant with Intercontinental Finance, a subsidiary of Intercontinental Bank Plc, Alhaji Ademola Adeagbo, on Friday evening by some unidentified gunmen, is being trailed by conflicting accounts.

A younger brother of the deceased, Mr. Adeniyi Adeagbo, told our correspondent on Sunday that his brother was brutally murdered by people suspected to be hired assassins at Orimerunmu in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

But the police in Ogun State, who said that the deceased’s metallic grey Toyota Corolla metallic grey car had been recovered in addition to N94,000, a laptop, briefcase, four packet shirts and one wristwatch in his car, stated that it was not likely to be a case of assassination because he did not die immediately..

Adeniyi told PUNCH METRO that on the fateful day, the gunmen had first driven to the residence of the slain banker in a private vehicle but did not find him there.

He said they subsequently launched a manhunt for him until they met him on the road, discussing with one of his neighbours who was said to be recuperating from her illness.

He said, “When my brother returned from work, he went to his wife’s shop to look for her. When he got to the shop, his wife was not there but met his children and two of his friend’s children in the shop. His children decided to go with him in his car.

“As they were going towards home, he met his wife. His wife told him that there was a neighbour of theirs who had been ill for some time and that he should go and greet her. As he was going to the neighbour’s house, he met her on the way. He stopped, came out of the car and exchanged pleasantries with her. As he was talking with the woman, some men drove near them and stopped. They came out from their car and told him they were policemen and that he was under arrest.

“My brother told them he had no problem with the police and that if they were actually policemen, they should identify themselves. After saying that, the men put hands in their pouch as if they wanted to bring out their identification cards only for them to bring guns out and started dragging him to enter into their car in the full glare of his three children and the neighbour he was greeting. As he refused to follow them, they pulled the trigger and shot him dead. As the neighbour and the children ran away shouting, ‘Won ti pa Alhaji, (they have killed Alhaji), the gunmen zoomed off with my brother’s official car and their own.”

Adeniyi said that when the news filtered in that 45-year-old Adeagbo had been killed, the youths in the area allegedly chased the gunmen and they abandoned his brother’s official car at the end of Orimerunmu Road.

Curiously, his assailants did not ask him for money or anything, but were said to have told him before they shot him that they did not want anything from him but his life.

Speaking amid tears, Adeniyi told our correspondent that his brother’s death dealt a devastating blow to him in particular and the family in general.

He said his brother was a fine gentleman who was kind to a fault, wondering why good people should be killed with such cruelty.

“My brother did not do any business with anybody. I do not know why they chose to kill him. They have caused problem for us. He was the light of our family. I do not know how to pick the pieces of my life that his death has caused me. He was one brother that understood the plight of his people,” the anguished brother said.

However, the Ogun State Police Command spokesman, Mr. Ademuyiwa Adejobi, said, “It is not likely to be a case of assassination because he did not die immediately. He was alive when the vehicle was being taken away. He struggled with the bandits when he was shot.

“The command wishes to appeal to members of the public that when such things happen, they should not struggle with the bandits. The command is investigating a case of armed robbery and not assassination.”

Our correspondent, who visited the residence of the Adeagbos, saw a motley crowd coming to commiserate with the family.

The deceased’s wife was inconsolable. Many sympathisers thronged the residence to pay their last respects.

It was gathered that Adeagbo would be buried on Sunday.

•Suspects arrested •governor Alao-Akala wants to kill me, Alaafin alleges
From Ibrahim Shuaibu in Kano and Zachaeus Somorin in Lagos, 07.12.2010
Photos Emir of kano,Alaafin of Oyo & Governor Alao aKala

But for providence, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, would have been killed over the weekend.

The traditional ruler escaped assassination last Friday by a lone gunman who attempted to kill him during the Muslim Juma’at prayer in Kano.

The suspect, 19 year-old Usman Abubakar, who lives in the Doraji Quarters in Kano Metropolis, was however, apprehended by the Police before carrying out the act.

Also arrested is one Alhaji Abubakar Batakaye who allegedly asked Abubakar to carry out the act.
Abubakar told THISDAY at the Kano Police Command headquarters yesterday that he was sent by a Mallam (marabout) with a specific instruction to kill the emir.

“I arrived the mosque as early as 9 am that day. I was sent to the place of worship by a 65 year-old Mallam Abubakar Batakaye, a marabout with a specific instruction to kill the emir,” he told the newspaper.
He said Batakaye allegedly asked him to recite one of the verses in the Holy Quran, Qurisiyu, 12,000 times before the congregational prayers to ensure the success of the deadly assignment.

Abubakar also stated that the marabout gave him a small amulet to conceal inside his mouth in order for him to garner courage in executing the task and to mysteriously disappear after.
He said: “I regret this attempt to kill the emir; I seek for his forgiveness and pardon. I am under the influence of the mallam who directed me to commit this ugly act.

“I was influenced by the mallam who told me to commit the act. For over ten years, I have been an ally of the mallam and his order or directive for me is like a blessing.”
Spokesman of Kano Police Command, SP Baba Mohammed Azare, confirmed the story and the arrest of the duo, saying “the state commissioner of police has ordered immediate investigation of the matter and the investigating team will be led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Lawal Tanko.

Also speaking with THISDAY, Batakaye denied ordering Abubakar to engage in the Emir’s murder.
“I have been attending that particular mosque for more 20 years without failing; I have a place reserved for me inside the mosque. I cannot think of attacking a monarch because our religion teaches us to regard them as the father of all,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi 111, has alleged that Oyo State Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala is planning to kill him.

The paramount ruler in a petition to President Goodluck Jonathan and the Inspector-General of Police alleged that the governor in collaboration with a prominent businessman in the ancient city of Oyo and a commander of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in the state hatched the plot to kill him in his palace.

He, however, said the plot failed because the collaborating senior police officer buckled at the last minute and reported the plot to him.

But reacting to the development, the governor denied the allegation, saying it should be discountenanced.
The governor’s Special Adviser, Media and Publicity Dotun Oyelade said: “Governor Akala discountenanced the so-called allegation as not only unfounded but a cooked up story much in line with the serial misinformation that the opposition has always engaged in
where there is no motive or serious disagreement, it is spurious to concoct this kind of story.

Alaafin remains the father of the governor from whom he draws profound wisdom.”
Police sources confirmed Alaafin’s petition to THISDAY, saying the Inspector-General of Police Ogbonna Onovo has ordered a high-level investigation into the alleged murder plot.

According to THISDAY checks, the directive to investigate the plot was complied with at the weekend as a team of investigators drawn from the cream of the intelligence community swung into action, visiting the SARS in Oyo and interrogating officers implicated by the petition.

In his petition, the monarch gave details of the alleged plot, claiming the governor and a businessman conspired with the senior police officer based in the town to invade his palace under the guise of seeking the arrest of suspects in the murder of the late Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo, Alhaji Azeez Adegbile, on April 4 this year.
He further alleged that the plan was to have him and other palace residents shot in the melee that was to ensue during the invasion.

Alaafin alleged that the senior SARS officer was recruited into the plot by the businessman, who provided him with logistics for the operation, including a brand new Toyota Hilux Jeep and N2million cash reward.
The officer, the monarch alleged, initially declined to participate in the plot but agreed to play along when the governor came into the picture and offered to raise the cash reward to N10million.

Oba Adeyemi stated that rather than carry out the plot, the police officer reported the murder plot to him, and that after his (the monarch’s) personal investigation showed that the plot was real, he decided to write the petition to the President.
The monarch further stated that when the plotters found that their plan had leaked to him and eventually failed, they enlisted the intervention of some prominent South-west traditional rulers and leaders of thought to pacify him.

The paramount ruler said that much as he respected his colleagues that sought to intervene, he could not accede to their overture because of the grave implication of the plot.
Oba Adeyemi, therefore, called on the President to investigate the murder plot and ensure that the plotters are brought to book.

New attacks on Christians in Kaduna state

At least seven people, including a mother of six, have been killed by Islamic militants in Nigeria's Kaduna state just four months after attacks left more than 500 dead in neighbouring Plateau.

The charity Release International, which serves persecuted Christians around the world, is calling on the new Nigerian president to ensure greater protection for vulnerable Christians of all denominations in the country.

Partners of Release say that armed men in military uniform shot dead seven Christians in Kizachi Dawai Chawai, Kaduna state, on July 3.

The gunmen surrounded the village at about 8.30pm and began shooting indiscriminately. The dead included a primary school teacher and a mother of six. Five others were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds..

The following day, assailants wielding guns and machetes attacked Ganawuri, a village near Jos, in neighbouring Plateau state. The Jos area was the scene of brutal violence against Christians in March which left 520 people dead, including many women and children.

Release sources say that the gunmen in both these latest raids were suspected Fulani militants from Kaduna.

These same sources now accuse the Nigerian military of not doing enough to protect vulnerable Christian communities. One source reports that police had withdrawn from Kizachi Dawai Chawai the day before the attack, because the government had allegedly failed to pay their salaries.

Release CEO Andy Dipper, who is currently on a fact-finding trip in Nigeria, said: "We're appalled to hear of yet more violence against Christians, who have been warning for some time now that they feared further attacks.

"We appeal to President Goodluck Jonathan and his administration to take firm action now to ensure that the military and police carry out their full responsibilities and protect Christians properly. We acknowledge it is a huge task - but enough is enough."

President Jonathan, who is from the mainly Christian south of Nigeria, was officially sworn into office in May, after the death of the previous incumbent, Umaru Yar'Adua.

Plateau is located in the centre of the country between the largely Muslim north and the south. Along with religious tensions, tribal and political differences have seen an increasing polarisation between different ethnic groups there.

Kaduna, just north of Plateau, has also been a flashpoint for conflict between Christians and Muslims, most notably during the 'Miss World riots' in 2002 when a newspaper's alleged blasphemy against Islam's prophet Mohammed sparked widespread violence against Christians.

Release's Andy Dipper urged Christians in the UK and Ireland to stand with the church in central and northern Nigeria. "Christians in Plateau and Kaduna are standing firm despite intolerable persecution - but they desperately need our prayers.

"And let's pray too for strength and wisdom for those in authority, including President Jonathan, so they can find a lasting solution to end this cycle of violence."

.Gunmen killed two people and kidnapped a traditional ruler while they were attending church services in the oil-producing Niger Delta, police said on Sunday.

At least five others were injured in the attack on Eze Sunday Njoku, the traditional ruler of the Umuebulu community near the oil hub Port Harcourt in Rivers state.

"The hoodlums, who extracted (Njoku) from his seat inside the church, killed two people who reportedly attempted to block them," said Rita Inoma-Abbey, spokeswoman for the Rivers state police.

"Several others also sustained gunshot injuries from stray bullets.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Kidnappings for ransom are common in the Niger Delta, home to Africa's biggest oil and gas industry, with hundreds of incidents reported each year. Most victims are released unharmed after a couple of days.

Foreign firms, ranging from oil to construction to telecoms, are forced to spend millions of dollars on security for their staff because of the high crime rate in the Niger Delta..

Unknown killers have struck again in Umuahia, Abia State, killing a 53-year-old director of National Agency For Food and Drug Administration And Control (NAFDAC), Chief Emeka Obi. Obi was murdered in his country home, Umuagungolori, Afugiri, in Ohuhu, Umuahia North Local Government Area, when he came home to spend the week end and attend to his farm land..

His lifeless body showed that he must have been matcheted to death by his assailants. The Village Head of Umuagungolori, Chief Bekee Ukaogo, a retired principal and the deceased’s younger brother, Steve Ononogbu, both of who spoke to Daily Sun said that there were deep matchete cuts on his neck and throat regions.

According to them , the killers must have killed him in his parlor and carried his corpse and laid it on the foam in his bed room.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police, state C.I.D, ACP Micloth, who confirmed the murder said that investigation was still going on.

His killers locked the door and gate to make people believe that he was not at home. The intention would have been for his body to decompose before it was discovered, a source said. “There were signs of struggle between him and his assailants before they eventually overpowered and killed him.” Ukaogo, said that the deceased, came home on Friday, April 23, 2010 about 2pm and many saw him and exchanged pleasantries with him.

“I met him about 2.pm and we discussed and as our discussion was becoming too long, I excused myself and told him that we would talk more in the evening and left.

“I was staying with one of his half brothers when he arrived home(Onuabuchi Obi). He told me he was going to Ugwu Nkpa to look for some one who would help him plant yam seedlings and that he would come back for us to talk again in the evening. We did not see again in the evening and I felt that since he did not come as he said , he would have been too busy.

I did not know that he was still in the village. It was on Monday night that it was discovered that he was dead.

“He had arranged with one of his brothers , to travel to Port Harcourt on Saturday. When the boy came and saw that the gate and door were locked, he left , believing that he had travelled without him.

“By Monday, his wives and some staff started calling that they had not seen him in Port Harcourt. They asked that people should look for him. Those who came around there said they perceived some unpleasant odour and so suspected that something was wrong.

“Then I. K. scaled the fence, into the compound and peeped in through the window and saw his corpse on his bed. He raised alarm and people gathered. Then he went and reported the findings to his younger brother, Steve Ononogbu Obi, who now invited the police to the scene. The wives were then called and they came and an arrangement was made and the corpse was taken to the mortuary.

“They said he had deep matchet cuts on his neck. The floor of his parlour and bed room had traces of his blood.

“They must have killed and carried his corpse and laid it on the bed face down to make people believe that he had gone out. I believe they planned it that no one would discover his corpse until it had decomposed.

“There were deep matchete cuts on his throat and the back of his neck. Those cuts must have touched his spinal cord. The police took pictures of the parlour and bedroom.

“He was a very liberal person, some one who liked to keep to himself. He was my student at Williams Secondary School in the 1970s. We have never experienced this type of incident before. He did not come with his car and I believe the reason is to avoid this type of problem. “The community has been meeting over this matter because it is very bad. The women have organized prayers for God to bring out those who committed this atrocity. He was the only one living in his house. His nearest neigbour is not at home. Everybody is shocked.”

His younger brother said: “It was a shock and I rallied elders of the family, went to the police and notified them and they came the next day. The gate and door to his house were padlocked and that must have been the handiwork of his attackers.

“The door was opened and he was discovered to have been lying face down on his foam. His body was taken to the mortuary. There were blood stains. It is a trauma to me , very unbelievable, it is cruel, so painful.

“He was one of the illustrious sons of this village, a model to so many of us. He was an icon. The village has called a meeting in an effort to unravel the mystery behind his death. One cannot really explain it. He was about 53 years of age.”

For long, the Mile-Two Badagry expressway has become a nightmare to both motorists and passers-by. This is because of the terror unleashed on people by criminals who have converted the major road into a haven. These criminals usually attack innocent and helpless commuters in their numbers from 7.30 pm daily.

The recovered items

Robbers who met their waterloo....

Ironically, these hoodlums carry out their nefarious activities very close to both the Police station and the nearby military barracks at Ojo.

Although some arrests have been made in recent times but that seemed not to have abated the trend as the robbers usually carry out their nefarious activities unhindered. They succeed in carrying out this devilish acts by capitalizing on the unending traffic congestion along the route, thereby inflicting wounds on their victims after dispossessing them of cash, mobile phones and other valuables.

Most times, they reportedly escape through the fence particularly, those of the military, thereby making it impossible for them to be rounded up even by other security agents.

Disturbed by the alarming trend, particularly as accusing fingers were being pointed at the Army whose cantonment these robbers sometimes run into for escape, military authorities decided to be on their guard. Their resolve paid off two weeks ago when five notorious robbers who have been terrorizing commuters on the highway met their waterloo.

End Of The Road

The six-man gang who thought it will be business as usual positioned themselves at a vantage point very close to the gate leading to Ojo cantonment, from Mile 2 end around 7 pm on the penultimate day, and started raiding commuters.

They reportedly shot sporadically to ward off intruders while the raid was going on. Soldiers at the main gate, according to eye witnesses, gave the robbers a hot chase on motorcycles and were able to catch up with them in a traffic. After the encounter which was described by eyewitnesses as ‘very hot’, two of the robbers were killed while three were completely incapacitated.

Army Reacts

Confirming the incident, spokesman of the 9 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Ikeja cantonment, Captain Daudu, explained that, “the robbers on getting to the Cantonment main gate, had the audacity to pull up and opened fire sporadically and robbed innocent civilians of their belongings.

Commuters from the bus stops adjoining the main gate and the one opposite took to their heels running helter skelter. Soldiers on duty at the gate could not attempt to confront the robbers immediately in order to avoid killing innocent civilians. The robbers got back on their motorcycles and made attempt to escape amidst the mayhem and brouhaha they caused. Luck however ran out of them as they got held in a traffic where they continued their shooting spree. Activities at the cantonment end of the abattoir pedestrian gate did not even deter them as they continued shooting sporadically and frantically into the air in a bid to enhance their escape.

“However, soldiers at the gate galvanized themselves into action and went in pursuit of the robbers. The point man, Makinta Suleiman took a bike quickly and on closing- up with the robbers, he opened fire, carefully taking his aim. There was a hot exchange of fire at the end of which five of the robbers were gunned down, two died while three were wounded and completely incapacitated. The shots were on target and neither hit any innocent citizen nor onlookers”.

Captain Dauda further noted that armed robbery attacks on the route are carried out regularly and these men of the under world sometimes use the cover of the barracks to escape stating that, “ Soldiers on the other hand, are to adhere strictly to the Rules of Engagement (ROE) at all times. This situation has made members of the public to suspects both soldiers and their wards as masterminds of such attacks. Luckily, our men have shown gallantry by dealing with them and we will not hesitate in taking such decisive action whenever the need arises”, he stated.

Police Take Over

Items recovered at the end of the shoot out, according to him, included, a loaded pistol, live cartridges, two operational motorcycles with registration numbers QE 619 AA and QV 983 LSD; mobile phones, digital camera, a wrist watch, two hand bags containing ladies wear, a calculator, the sum of N495 and CFA 7, 000 cash, WHO international certificate of vaccination, amongst others.

Captain Dauda said all the recovered items are suspected to have been robbed from their owners. He also informed that the suspects, their dead colleagues and items recovered were handed over to the Police Special Armed Robbery Squad.

A notorious South African white supremacist leader was killed Saturday by his employees, police said, in an apparent dispute over wages.

Eugene Terreblanche, 69, was the leader of the neo-Nazi Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging (Afrikaner Resistance Movement, or AWB).

He was bludgeoned and stabbed to death on his farm with clubs and a machete, police said. Two of his farm workers ages 21 and 16 turned themselves in to authorities in connection with the killing.

The suspects will appear in court Tuesday, police said.

The AWB urged its members and supporters to be calm as they mourn their leader.

South African President Jacob Zuma also appealed for calm after news of the killing broke, according to the country’s national news agency, SAPA.

Terreblanche’s death comes amid a time of racial polarization in the country. A South African court last month banned the playing of a political song called “Kill the Boer,” most recently sung by radical youth leader Julius Malema. The apartheid-era song’s lyrics translate to “kill the farmer.”

South African civil rights group AfriForum condemned the killing and also called for calm in a statement on its Web site.

“These events are a call to all South Africans to come to their senses and to be aware of the extremely polarized and violent circumstances presently prevalent in the country,” the statement said.

The group also said that “all communities — white, as well as black — should refrain from reckless statements and from romanticizing violence.”

Terreblanche’s AWB is best known for trying to block South Africa’s effort to end apartheid. The group used terrorist tactics in a bid to stall the country’s first all-race vote in 1994, killing more than 20 people in a wave of bombings on the eve of the elections.

Terreblanche was convicted of the 1996 attempted murder of Paul Motshabi, a black man who worked as a security guard on Terreblanche’s farm. He served about two-thirds of a five-year sentence.

He also was convicted of setting his dog on a black man in an earlier incident..

Explosion rocks amnesty talks

Acting President Goodluck Jonathan had a baptism of fire yesterday as the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) detonated two bombs at the post amnesty dialogue organised by Vanguard Media Limited, the publishers of Vanguard newspapers in Warri, Delta State, that left one person dead.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted Charles Muka, the Delta State Police Command spokesperson, that one person died in the explosion. Mr. Muka said that the police headquarters in Asaba, the state capital, had received the report of the death of a woman in the explosion, which also injured a number of other persons. He could not ascertain the number of those who were injured in the blast, which twice rocked the venue of the meeting.

The explosions caused the postponement of the meeting hosted by the Delta State government.

It was gathered that the first bomb exploded at 11 a.m. as governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta was walking into the hall with his colleagues from Imo and Delta, Ikedi Ohakim and Adams Oshiomhole.

The Niger Delta Minister, Ufot Ekaette, who represented Mr. Jonathan, was also behind the governors, witnesses said.

Eyewitness account

Daniel Orji, a staff of the Delta Broadcasting Corporation, who was at the scene of the explosions said in a phone interview, “There was a bomb explosion while the programme was on.

“After about 30 minutes, the second one exploded. The initial report was that three people were injured. Two cars exploded but altogether four cars were affected; two other cars that w ere beside the second car were affected.”

Mr. Orji added that immediately after the second explosion everybody scampered away for safety, unlike the first explosion when people still stayed at the venue.

Also, MEND in an e-mail message signed by its usual signatory, Jomo Gbomo, to journalists confirmed the attacks:

“The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta salutes all its operatives who at great risk, successfully planted and detonated two car bombs at the venue of the Vanguard Post Amnesty Conference in Warri,” the statement said.

“Three such bombs, of varying strength, were planted at this venue. It was unnecessary to detonate the third and most powerful bomb as our operatives noticed the participants at this jamboree fled towards the direction of the last bomb.

“Any attempt to detonate this bomb would have resulted in great loss of lives. This bomb is being preserved for future use.

“All who participated in this operation safely returned to their respective bases.”

Oma Djebah, the Delta State information commissioner, had earlier in the day confirmed the explosion.

“Yes, there was an explosion about 200 meters away from the conference venue,” Mr. Djebah said in a phone interview.

Contrary to agency reports which indicated that the device went off near the main hall of the event, Mr. Djebah claimed that the explosion went off in a car parked away from the venue.

“The explosion happened while Sam Amuka-Pemu - the Vanguard Publisher - was giving his address after the chairman, Patrick Aziza, had given his opening remarks,” said a source who was at the conference.

We’re no media creation

However, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) said in an e-mailed statement to journalists that it had planted three explosive devices in and around Delta State Government House in Warri to debunk the state governor’s claim that “MEND is a media creation.” “After receiving the baton of ignorance from his Bayelsa State counterpart, the governor of Delta State declared in the Vanguard newspaper of February 22, 2010 that “the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) is a media creation,” the statement said and promised that it would detonate the first bomb remotely at 11:30 hours Nigerian time, which it did.

The use of car bombs marks a significant change in the tactics adopted by MEND, which had maintained a tenuous peace since the federal government amnesty programme commenced last June. The deal, brokered with the aid of the then Vice President Goddluck Jonathan, has been touted as the greatest achievement of the Yar’Adua administration till date.

MEND also disputed insinuations that the attack was targeted against specific individuals saying, “It was not targeted to harm anyone and that is why the cars were not filled with bolts, nuts and nails which in the event of a blast become deadly projectiles. Our aim was to stop the jamboree and pass a message to Uduaghan.”

Amnesty on course

Meanwhile at Abuja, the Federal Government reinstated its commitment to pursue the post amnesty programme, the explosions notwithstanding.

“We’re on top of the situation in Niger Delta,” Mr. Jonathan said at the State House while receiving Kenneth Yellowe, the chairman and chief executive of Global Gas and Refining Limited.

“The problems in the region, being human and development-related, are such that require time to be addressed. I encourage the Niger Delta people and major companies in the region to keep faith with government, as we are determined to reinvigorate post-amnesty plans and programmes for the region.”

Rivers: Gunmen in police uniform kill Gov’s aide Rivers State on Saturday woke to mourn the killing of an aide to Governor Rotimi Amaechi and a former member of the state House of Assembly, Charles Nsiegbe, by unknown gunmen who wore police uniforms. Nsiegbe who until his death was a member of the state‘s Bureau of Public Procurement was reportedly gunned down on Friday night at Tombia Street extension of the Government Reservation Area of Port Harcourt by men who flagged down his car as he travelled in company with some male associates. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Rita Inoma-Abbey, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent said only one gunman in “mobile police uniform,” shot at the former lawmaker. Our correspondent gathered that Nsiegbe, who was an official of the State Security Service before his election into the House of Assembly, was shot severally on the chest and legs immediately he came out of his car and attempted to open the boot. The assassins were also said to have kept shooting at the deceased as they moved towards their waiting car just to make sure he did not survive the attack. But it was disclosed that no shot was fired at the associate whose name could not be determined. According to sources, security agencies in the state were said to be working on the theory of assassination as the gunmen did not remove anything from the car of the man and his associate. Nsiegbe was said to have been quickly rushed by his associate and sympathisers to Teme Clinic in the state capital where he died. The police, our correspondent reported, had moved the victim‘s car to the Rivers State‘s Criminal Investigation Department in Port Harcourt and arrested the associate who was interrogated and detained at the SCID for further investigations. Inoma-Abbey assured that the perpetrators would be arrested and prosecuted to serve as warning to others. She pleaded with members of the public for “prompt and accurate” information that could lead to the arrest of the killer. Amaechi, who expressed shock at the killing, said the incident was sad and very unfortunate. The Governor who spoke through his Acting Chief Press Secretary, Blessing Wikina, stated that the ugly incident happened when the governments to tap from the experiences of committee persons like Nsiegbe, to move the state forward. The governor asked the security agencies to get to the root of the killing, stressing that the death was unexpected at this crucial period when people of the Niger Delta, especially the youths, agreed that they would no longer be involved in criminality, thereby embracing amnesty.

Jungle gang kill victims for their fat

Friday, November 20, 2009A gang in the Peruvian jungle has been killing people and draining fat from the corpses to sell on the black market for use in cosmetics.Three suspects confessed to killing five people, but the gang may have been involved in dozens more, said Colonel Jorge Mejia, chief of Peru's anti-kidnapping police.Mejia said two of the suspects were arrested carrying bottles of liquid human fat and told police it was worth $60,000 a gallon. The fat was sold to intermediaries in Peru's capital, Lima, and police suspect it was then sold to cosmetic companies in Europe.Medical experts expressed doubt about an international black market for human fat, although it does have cosmetic applications. At a news conference, police showed reporters two bottles of fat recovered from the suspects and a photo of the rotting head of a 27-year-old male victim.Suspect Elmer Segundo Castillejos, 29, led police to the head, recovered in a coca-growing valley last month.Mejia said Castillejos recounted how the gang cut off its victims' heads, arms and legs, removed the organs, then suspended the torsos from hooks above candles that warmed the flesh as fat dripped into tubs below.Six members of the gang remain at large, Mejia said. Among them was the band's alleged leader, Hilario Cudena, 56, who Castillejos told police has been killing people to extract human fat for more than three decades. This year alone, at least 60 people are listed as missing in Huanuco province, where the gang allegedly operated, though the province is also home to drug-trafficking leftist rebels.Human fat is used in anti-wrinkle treatments - but is always extracted from the patient who is being treated, usually from the stomach or buttocks."There would be a risk of immunological reaction that could lead to life-threatening consequences" if fat from someone else were used, said Dr. Neil Sadick, a professor of dermatology at Cornell Weill Medical College in New York.

Latest News Murdered businesswoman and philanthropist, Mrs Patricia Chidiac Hebeed, received several threat calls on a daily basis before she was killed in church last Sunday. Anyanwu Stanley Emeka, her nephew who had been living with her for years, told pimpmynaija.com sources yesterday at the residence of the late sole importer of Erico Air conditioner at Azare Crescent, off Liverpool Road, Apapa, Lagos, that his aunt expressed fear concerning the several threat calls she was receiving from people she did not know early last year. “She sometimes asked me to pick such calls and immediately I picked, the caller would just switch off the phone. Some of them would speak in Hausa language and because I don’t understand the language, I would only ask them to speak English, but rather they would just switch off the phone immediately,” he said. Clearing the air on the purported divorce between his aunt and her husband of 24 years, Anyanwu said there was no divorce but that the man only went back to Lebanon, his home, with their four children after a misunderstanding, adding that her aunt had been frequenting the country since they left. She was murdered inside Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Apapa, Lagos, on Sunday morning at about 10 o’clock after she was driven to the church in her YXR Bullet Proof Mercedes SUV with registration number BD 22 AKD, Lagos number, by his driver. She is survived by two boys and two girls. The first-born is 23 years old. Reverend Father Andrew Sullivan, an Irish priest, who is in charge of the church, told pimpmynaija.com sources he suspected a case of assassination. The Reverend Father said the gunmen who came on a motorcycle did not rob anyone in the church. The gunmen were also said to have left behind the deceased’s handbag as they rushed off immediately after the incident. Hebeed was said to be standing close to the Reverend Father and some worshippers waiting for the second mass to commence when a gunman walked in and shot her. “She was standing directly behind me when I was entering the church for the mass to commence. The assailant just walked up to her and fired a shot into her stomach. She slumped in a pool of her own blood without shouting or crying. The assailant immediately took to his heels in the middle of the confusion, jumped on top of a motorbike that was waiting outside and zoomed off. It was the gun shot that stopped me,” the Reverend Father said. “The deceased was rushed to Lagoon Hospital, Liverpool area in Apapa. A few minutes after she was admitted, news came that there was the likelihood that she would survive it. As the mass went one, about ten minutes later news came that she had died. It was shocking to find out that somebody was shot in the church, but it was more devastating to find out that the person who was standing directly behind you that was shot had died,” he said. Father Sullivan said the late Hebeed started worshipping in the church around January this year. Although, the Reverend Father said he did not know her personally, parishioners informed him that she started with them this year and she never held any position in the church until her assassination. He said from the look of things, it was safe to say that the assailant was inside the church before the arrival of the deceased. Sullivan said they had never witnessed such incident before beside the petty theft of mobile handsets and ladies purses since he assumed duties there over three years ago. Meanwhile, plain-clothe detectives have been posted to keep watch at the premises of churches and mosques in the Lagos metropolis. A police source told pimpmynaija.com sources that the command had detailed more policemen around churches and mosques to forestall any future occurrence. Yesterday News Gunmen stormed the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Apapa on Sunday morning, killing a notable businesswoman, Patricia Obii Chidiak during mass. The four-man gang whose motive could not be ascertained at press time arrived the Church located on Creek Road, Apapa, while the 10 o’clock mass was going, shot dead Chidiak, an Imo State-born society lady married to a Lebanese, simply identified as M Habib. The husband is believed to have traveled out of Lagos east weekend with the couple’s children. Until her life was cut short abruptly on Sunday, Patricia Chidiak was engaged in steel import and construction business with her husband, but the couple’s marriage was alleged to have become frosty lately. pimpmynaijaNews gathered that the gunmen stormed the Church premises for the dastardly act on two motorcycles. They also allegedly were armed with locally made pistols. Two of the hoodlums went inside the Church premises, while the other two waited on their get-away motorcycles. The victim who first arrived the Church for the mass, was approached by the gunmen, shot in the ribs region and her handbag was snatched. In the pandemonium that followed the shooting, the gunmen hurried out of the Church premises, jumped on the bikes and zoomed off. The deceased’s driver simply identified as Yahaya chased the gunmen using the victim’s Toyota Land Cruiser sport utility vehicle while anti-crime policemen from Apapa also pursued them in a patrol van. The not chase towards Tin Can Port ended, when tankers parked on the bridge made traffic movement impossible, aiding the escape of the hoodlums. Yahaya, the victim’s driver told pimpmynaijaNews he was sitting in the SUV outside the Church when he heard gunshots inside the church. He said while wondering what was amiss, he saw one of the gunmen emerge clutching a hand bag he immediately recognized as belonging to his boss. Yahaya said he suspected she had been shot and decided to chase the men on the bikes. Also speaking with Daily Sun, the cook who claimed to have swerved the deceased for eight years described her as a very nice woman who loved people without discrimination. It was gathered hat her husband left Nigeria last Friday on a trip believed to be to Lebanon with the couple’s children. Both the Police Assistant Inspector General (AIG) in charge of zone 2, Mohammed Abubakar and Lagos Commissioner of Police, Marvel Akpoyibo visited the scene of the murder as anti-crime detectives launched an immediate investigation. Contacted for information, Lagos Police spokesman, Frank Mba described it as a tactical case of murder. Mba said the anti-crime police patrol men who chased the gunmen could not fire at them to avoid killing innocent passersby. The deceased’s corpse has been deposited in the morgue. Only recently, the Imo State governor, Ikedi Ohakim set up the Imo Hall of Fame Committee, naming the late Obii Chidiak as member. Friends and associates who learnt about the society lady’s death yesterday were too shocked, pleading for time to comment on the incident.

Robbers kill Christ Embassy pastor, newly married couple ...Pastor’s fiancée goes into coma, hospitalized Mr. Chris Ipigbhe, a sub-pastor at one of the Christ Embassy’s satellite parish, Baruwa, at Ipaja area of Lagos, had just attended an evening service that fateful Wednesday , where he personally mounted the pulpit to preach. He never had the premonition that it was going to be his last sermon, as he was later shot dead by some dare-devil robbers shortly after. The robbers also allegedly killed no fewer than four persons, including a newly wedded couple. Daily Sun gathered that the substantive pastor was said to be away and had asked the sub-pastor to take charge. The up-coming pastor did just that and was said to be seeing off one of the church members, an elderly woman, as it was already dark, when they ran into some armed robbers, who were operating in the same compound where the woman he was seeing off lives. “She begged the robbers, who were holding sway at the gate, not to harm the pastor. She told them he was his son and that they were coming back from the church” our source said. The pastor was said to have been ordered to lie face-down while the female member was asked to raise her two hands to the sky. Unfortunately for the pastor, some of the robbers who were operating upstairs were said to have come downstairs with their loot when they saw the pastor and the woman “serving their punishment” and appeared not to be satisfied. One of the bandits, allegedly shot the pastor ripping open his stomach and his intestines gushing out. After shooting their victims, the robbers allegedly operated from room to room, carting away money and other valuables belonging to the residents of the two-storey building. The rattled woman was said to have screamed for help until her co-tenants, who were also victims of the robbery incident rushed out to help her to take the pastor to a nearby hospital. Two residents, Francis Alumhe and James Igbape narrated how the victim was referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), adding that he later gave up the ghost.
