Petrol scarcity has hit Nigeria's capital, Abuja, and the nation's commercial capital, Lagos, as long queues were noticed at some filling stations on Friday. When NEXT visited the NNPC MEGA station on Olusegun Obasanjo way in Abuja, both private and commercial motorists were seen struggling to fill their tanks. A petrol attendant who simply identified herself as Esther said "petrol tankers are on strike". In Lagos also, many motorists were seen in lines for fuel.

It was confusion on Friday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos as a fire outbreak at the eight floor of the terminal made hundreds of passengers and airport users scramble for safety.

The fire, which affected the equipment and control room of the airport, was noticed by witnesses at the airport around noon, and lasted for a few minutes before the arrival of the fire fighters from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

"We were standing here when we saw a thick smoke coming out of that room upstairs and we had to raise alarm so that people will evacuate this place before any harm is done," said Stephen, a traveler at the terminal.

According to this eyewitness, the incident necessitated a "mad rush" out of the airport terminal, as people hurried outside the airport in order not to be caught in the flame.

Movements in and out of the airport was however, highly restricted by the Aviation Security personnel of the airports authority, as they provided specific assistance to the team of fire fighters.

The situation was calmed within minutes, but Akin Olukunle, the public affairs manager of the airports authority had his phones switched off, and was not available at his office to respond to the press on the development.

Meanwhile, Supo Atobatele, the public affairs manager for the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) disclosed that no harm was done to the equipment in the control room, adding that the prompt arrival of the fire fighters saved the day.

The spokesperson for the agency commended the arrival of the team and noted that the ambulance from the airports authority was in place should there any form of casualty.

"It is electrical spark from the distribution box in the equipment room. The spark did not affect our equipment. Flight operations were not affected. We are now on uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS)," he said..

"It did not affect the tower from doing its job. Engineers from FAAN and NAMA are already working on it.''

A massive earthquake has hit the northeast of Japan triggering a tsunami that has caused extensive damage.

Japan's TV showed cars, ships and even buildings being swept away the Fukushima prefecture, after the 8.8 magnitude earthquake.

Officials said a wave as high as 6m (20ft) could strike the coast.

The quake struck about 250 miles (400km) from Tokyo at a depth of 20 miles, shaking building in the capital for several minutes.

The tremor at 1446 local time (0546 GMT) was followed by a series of powerful aftershocks.

(CNN) -- The powerful earthquake that unleashed a devastating tsunami Friday appears to have moved the main island of Japan by 8 feet (2.4 meters) and shifted the Earth on its axis.

"At this point, we know that one GPS station moved (8 feet), and we have seen a map from GSI (Geospatial Information Authority) in Japan showing the pattern of shift over a large area is consistent with about that much shift of the land mass," said Kenneth Hudnut, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Reports from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy estimated the 8.9-magnitude quake shifted the planet on its axis by nearly 4 inches (10 centimeters).

The temblor, which struck Friday afternoon near the east coast of Japan, killed hundreds of people, caused the formation of 30-foot walls of water that swept across rice fields, engulfed entire towns, dragged houses onto highways, and tossed cars and boats like toys. Some waves reached six miles (10 kilometers) inland in Miyagi Prefecture on Japan's east coast.

The quake was the most powerful to hit the island nation in recorded history and the tsunami it unleashed traveled across the Pacific Ocean, triggering tsunami warnings and alerts for 50 countries and territories as far away as the western coasts of Canada, the U.S. and Chile. The quake triggered more than 160 aftershocks in the first 24 hours -- 141 measuring 5.0-magnitude or more.

The quake occurred as the Earth's crust ruptured along an area about 250 miles (400 kilometers) long by 100 miles (160 kilometers) wide, as tectonic plates slipped more than 18 meters, said Shengzao Chen, a USGS geophysicist.

Japan is located along the Pacific "ring of fire," an area of high seismic and volcanic activity stretching from New Zealand in the South Pacific up through Japan, across to Alaska and down the west coasts of North and South America. The quake was "hundreds of times larger" than the 2010 quake that ravaged Haiti, said Jim Gaherty of the LaMont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University.

The Japanese quake was of similar strength to the 2004 earthquake in Indonesia that triggered a tsunami that killed over 200,000 people in more than a dozen countries around the Indian Ocean. "The tsunami that it sent out was roughly comparable in terms of size," Gaherty said. "[The 2004 tsunami] happened to hit some regions that were not very prepared for tsunamis ... we didn't really have a very sophisticated tsunami warning system in the Indian Ocean basin at the time so the damage was significantly worse."

The Japanese quake comes just weeks after a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck Christchurch on February 22, toppling historic buildings and killing more than 150 people. The timeframe of the two quakes have raised questions whether the two incidents are related, but experts say the distance between the two incidents makes that unlikely.

"I would think the connection is very slim," said Prof. Stephan Grilli, ocean engineering professor at the University of Rhode Island.

Valentine buzz hits Lagos varsity

jpeg&STREAMOID=F_9K2eeYc09d9gYNepp9GS6SYeqqxXXqBcOgKOfTXxSrZxyMQVJoIABBRBqlw2iRnW_PgxgftuECOcfJwS6Jtlp$r8Fy$6AAZ9zyPuHJ25T7a9GKDSxsGxtpmxP0VAUyHL6IDcZHtmM2t7xO$FHdJG95dFi6y2Uma3vSsvPpVyo-Four days to the celebration of Valentine’s Day, students of the University of Lagos have been caught up in a frenzy of activities geared towards celebrating this year’s occasion.

The day synonymous with sharing and exchanging of gifts among lovers, and the students have started making arrangements for this. Corporate organizations have also begun to cash in on the trend. Strands Events, a resource company that focuses on organising trade fairs on campuses, is currently holding a trade fair at the institution. A total of 46 companies are currently exhibiting their products to the eager students at the fair which began on Monday..

Wooing the students

Ahmed Akinsemoyin, a Director of the company, noted that this was the sixth time they were organising a Valentine’s Trade Fair in the university. “Valentine is marketable,” he said. “It is a season where you have love in the air and Valentine has to do with buying. To actually show someone you love the person during Valentine, you’d probably have to get the person a gift. It is a season that is really felt on campus and it’s easier to market to companies at this period because they see it as an opportunity to come to exhibit their products.”

Muyiwa Lolade, a distributor at House of Tara, a cosmetics manufacturer, said he was happy to be at the fair and had various products that were of interest to the students. “We have different varieties of our products ranging from powder, to lip gloss, basically we are here to bring out the beauty in them,” he said. “We have gift packs that they can give to their loved ones.” Also Isaiah Bendi, a Customer Activation personnel from Visafone, said he used the opportunity of the fair to offer new products to his company’s subscribers. “We are activating customers on CUG here,” he said. “We are trying to put the UNILAG staff and students on a Closed User Group whereby all registered members in the group call themselves free of charge regardless of wherever they are. We are also carrying out SIM registration and selling Internet modems.”

Companies selling clothing and accessories received more attention from the students. Franklin Madubueze, a sales representative at U-Cee Fittables, explained that the students were thrilled at the opportunity of having discounts on the items sold which was a major cause for the traffic at his stand. Martins Obaze, the Regional Retail Coordinator of Skye Bank Lagos Mainland, said he was there to market his company’s services to the visitors. “We’ve been part of this for a couple of years now,” he said. “We are here to offer account opening opportunities where whatever kind of account they open here either by students or visitors, they get to go home with consolatory gifts.”

Getting good bargains

For most of the students, the fair offered them an opportunity to get good bargains on products. As Aisha Badru, a 200 Level Biochemistry student noted: “Even though Valentine’s day is on a Monday, it won’t stop us from enjoying ourselves.” While noting that the event was also receiving patronage from people outside the campus, Mr Akinsemoyin said that there were other side attractions at the fair which were of interest to the buyers and visitors. “There is always a show in the evenings where different artistes perform everyday,” he said. “It’s not just about buying, but as you are shopping, you are having fun.”

Thousands of online banking customers have accounts emptied by 'most dangerous trojan virus ever created'

* Trojan is still at large and may strike again, experts warn
* Bank affected has still not been named

Cyber criminals have raided the accounts of thousands of British internet bank customers in one of the most sophisticated attacks of its kind.

The fraudsters used a malicious computer programme that hides on home computers to steal confidential passwords and account details from at least 3,000 people..

The internet security experts M86, who uncovered the scam, estimate that at least £675,000 has been illegally transferred from the UK in the last month - and that the attacks are still continuing.

Out of action: The new trojan virus can empty bank accounts without their owners knowing about the theft

Out of action: The new trojan virus can empty bank accounts without their owners knowing about the theft as it showsthem fake statements

All the victims were customers with the same unnamed online bank, the company said.

Last night online banking customers were urged to make sure their anti-virus software was up to date - and to check for any missing sumsfrom their accounts.

The attack has been traced to a 'control and command' centre in Eastern Europe. However, the nationality of the cybercriminals isunknown.

TROJAN PROTECTION TIPS

  • Make sure your anti-virus software is up to date.
  • Keep firewalls set to the highest level.
  • Never open an e-mail attachment from someone you don't know.
  • Never double-click on an e-mail attachment that ends in .exe. It is an'executable' file and can do what it likes in your system.
  • If you think your machine has already been infected, contact your bankimmediately. If the bank thinks you are a genuine victim of fraud itwill reimburse you.

The attacks were carried out when hundreds of thousands of home computers were infected with a type of harmful computer code called aTrojan.

Trojans hide in websites, emails or downloads. Once installed on a computer they can record every type of the keyboard, steal confidentialinformation or even open up a PC's security so that it can becontrolled remotely from another country.

The latest attack involved a Trojan called Zeus v3 which hides inside adverts on legitimate websites.

Once installed on a home computer, the programme waits until the user visits their online bank and then secretly records their accountdetails and passwords - using the information to transfer between £1,000and £5,000 to other bank accounts.

The attacks began on July 5 and are still progressing, according to Ed Rowley, product manager at M86.

'In the vast majority of cases, if people had kept their computer's operating systems and software such as Internet Explorer up to date theywould not have been attacked,' he said.

'More often than not Trojans exploit known vulnerabilities that can be simply patched and fixed by downloading updates.'

McAfee, the security software maker, said production of software code known as malware, which can harm computers and steal user passwords, reached a new high in the first six months of 2010.

It said total malware production continued to soar and 10 million new pieces of malicious code were catalogued.

It also warned users of Apple's Mac computers, considered relatively safe from virus attacks, that they may also be subjected to malwareattacks in the future.

'For a variety of reasons, malware has rarely been a problem for Mac users. But those days might end soon,' a spokesman said.

THE RISING THREAT OF TROJAN ATTACKS

Attacks by ‘Trojan viruses’ are on the rise in Britain.

Although up-to-date anti-virus software should prevent an attack, experts say analarming number of people leave their computers vulnerable tocybertheft.

Trojans are malicious programmes that hide inside apparently harmless computer files.

They can lurk on websites, online adverts or hitch a lift in emails.

The Zeus v3 Trojan involved in the latest attacks hides in adverts that appear on legitimate websites.

Each time someone clicks on the advert, the code is downloaded to their home computer where it lies dormant.

The code only becomes active when the computer connects to a bank websitewhen it starts to record account details, passwords and otherconfidential information.

It checks to see if the account holds enough cash and then transfers up to£5,000 to a ‘mule’ account - a legitimate bank account held by a realcustomer.

Owners of these mule accounts operate on the edge of the law and agree totransfer sums they receive to someone else, after taking a cut.

By the time the police have investigated a Trojan attack, the recipient of the money has usually vanished without trace.

Security experts say it is relatively easy to protect against Trojan attacks byinstalling anti-virus software and keeping it up to date.

Computer owners should also make sure they have downloaded any updates of theiroperating software - usually Windows - and other programmes such asInternet Explorer, Firefox and Adobe.

People should also be alert to junk emails that pretend to be from banks, theInland Revenue or online shops like Amazon and Ebay.

The emails invite the unwary to click on a link to a webpage containing a Trojan.

'Our latest threat report depicts that malware has been on a steady incline in the first half of 2010,' Mike Gallagher, chief technologyofficer of Global Threat Intelligence for McAfee, said in the reportthat was obtained by Reuters.

The internet security company has passed on details of the attacks to the UK Police Central E-Crime Unit in London.

Britain's high street banks declined to comment on the attacks, but urged customers to protect themselves from virus attacks.

A spokesman for HSBC said: 'There are millions of viruses and other malicious software.

'We urge people to take basic measure to protect themselves from virus attacks.

'Any customer who is a victim of fraud will be reimbursed by HSBC.'

Last year £59.7 million was stolen in online banking fraud, while another £440 million was lost to credit card fraud.

A Financial Fraud Action UK spokeswoman said: ‘The idea that criminals are targeting people by using malicious software or Trojans isnothing new.

‘Bank systems are hard to attack so they’re having to go through the easier link in the chain, which is the customers.

‘They’re hoping customers aren’t taking security precautions. We’ve been seeing this for the last few years and we’re constantly urgingpeople to protect their computers to try to mitigate the risk ofbecoming a victim.”

Online banking customers can take measures to protect themselves by keeping their anti-virus software up to date and keeping their firewallsset to the highest level, she added.

Victims of online banking fraud usually get their money back.

Earlier this month, an internet security company Trusteer, warned that 100,000 British computers were infected with an earlier version ofZeus.

GSM line cloning hits Lagos

FRAUDULENT cloning of Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) lines, using ICT devices, is gradually joining the growing number of crimes perpetrated on cyberspace.

According to findings, perpetrators of the new trick use latest technology to duplicate telephone lines of their targets. In turn, these are used to swindle their associates, friends and relations, who are deceived into believing instructions from the cloned lines (usually pleas for financial favour) are sent from original GSM line owners.

It was also learnt that those who are involved operate as syndicates, relying on previous correspondences of their victims. Some of these are obtained from relatives or house helps to swindle unsuspecting telephone users.

The Guardian was informed that many residents of Lagos have fallen victim of this latest form of fraud, as the trend, also, spreads gradually to other Nigeria's major cities.

A reliable source said the swindlers recently hoodwinked some staff members of the University of Lagos. An unknown person was said to have used a telephone number of a certain professor to send text messages to the professor's colleagues.

Findings revealed that the message came to individual recipients, requesting they send N10, 000 each to the professor's nephew (via a bank account quoted in the message). It stated the professor could not meet the obligation because he was out of the country. As it turned out, the sender of the message had forwarded the same text to all close associates of the professor. Contrary to the fraudster's claim, the don was in Lagos...

One of the receivers said the text showed it had been sent from his colleague's phone, hence, he could not doubt its authenticity. He was skeptical, however, wondering why his colleague chose to send a text rather than make a voice call.

He said just before he would respond to the request he found the same message had been sent to all close associates of the professor.

Recently, a chief medical director of a Lagos-based hospital almost lost huge amounts of money to swindlers through a similar scam.

Unlike the UNILAG incident, an individual was said to have taken a cheque, purportedly drafted by the medical doctor to a bank. The bank called the owner of the cheque for confirmation and somebody, who claimed to the doctor, picked the call, confirming the order.

Not convinced by the voice, the bank official called the fixed line in the account mandate, only to be told the doctor had not written the cheque. During the transaction, the account owner had his line. But it was found to be inactive.

While the technology employed for Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card and telephone card cloning are different, a source hinted that the crime is perpetrated by the same syndicates who regularly switch from one form or fraud to the other, depending on public awareness level. They are also said to operate with international allies where they import skills and technology.

Barkindo said that the resumption of gas supply to the countries was because domestic gas supply had improved, hinting also that supply to Ghana was initially stopped to satisfy local demand.

The NNPC GMD, who was speaking to journalists on the sidelines of a meeting organised by the corporation titled, "Stakeholders' forum on gas to power: Achieving alignment for delivering gas to power in Nigeria," said, "Today, we have started supplying the West African Gas Pipeline, which we had to shut down in order to divert the gas for domestic utilisation."

He added that the reason for the resumption of supply was "Because power generation has started to go up."

The West African Gas Pipeline Company, the firm delivering Nigeria's gas to Ghana, had in a statement issued in November 2009, said, "WAPco, last April delivered its first natural gas supply to VRA's Takoradi Thermal Plant at Aboadze near Takoradi, under an interim gas supply arrangement.

"This initial supply enabled VRA to commission one of its 100 megawatts' turbines and generate power in Ghana from natural gas.

"Since May 2009, however, WAPCo has not received gas from N-Gas Limited for further delivery to VRA due to vandalism of gas supply pipelines in the Niger Delta region, several kilometres upstream of the WAGP connection to the Nigerian Gas Company's Escravos-Lagos Pipeline system."

Corroborating Barkindo's statement on increased power generation , the Executive Director, Operations, Power Holding Company of Nigeria, Mr. John Ayodele, who was also speaking on the sidelines of the conference in Lagos, said power generation was 3,558 megawatts on Monday morning and could climb to 3,700MW by Tuesday morning.

Also, Barkindo, had, in a presentation at the opening ceremony of the event, explained reasons why the oil industry could not achieve the 1.2 billion standard cubic feet of gas- domestic -gas- target agreed between it and government in 2008 and which government provided adequate funds for.in 2008 and 2009 budgets.

According to him, although the industry achieved 885 million standard cubic feet, it fell short of the target beacuse of the security situation in the Niger Delta, which was poor between 2008 and 2009 and operational challenges in the various oil producing companies.

Barkindo said, " The 1.2 billion scfd, domestic gas supply obligation was distributed among Joint Venture companies, including the NNPC and some of the Production Sharing Contracts' operators like Pan Ocean. In each of the companies, they had internal challenges. Now, this meeting that we convened will give us the opportunity to jointly review and address these challenges in order to come out with a joint programme of action, that is realistic, flexible and will enable us, not only to achieve the missed target but also to bring forward the projects which are being funded in the 2010 budget."

He stated that the outcome of the conference would be presented to Acting President Goodluck Jonathan

Small Earthquake hits off Hawaii's coast

(CNN) -- A 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck Hawaii on Monday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake struck about 6:30 p.m. (11:30 p.m. ET) and was 19.3 miles (31.1 km) deep. The epicenter was 13 miles (20 km) southwest of the coastal region of Laupahoehoe and 189 miles (304 km) east of Honolulu, the USGS said. There were no immediate reports of damage

Hasbro has unveiled the design of the new 75th anniversary edition of their classic board game, Monopoly, set to hit stores in fall of 2010. "Monopoly: Revolution Edition" is slick and round instead of dull and square, with debit cards and an ATM instead of paper money and a banker, clear plastic representations of the classic tokens (bye-bye, little boot!), and clips of popular songs (like Rihanna’s "Umbrella," Daniel Powter’s "Bad Day," and Beyonce's "Crazy in Love") that play after certain actions.

This is not the first game to get a modern reboot (there’s an update to the classic Trivial Pursuit, and Scrabble got a face-lift for its 60th anniversary), but Monopoly’s changes will undoubtedly appeal to the 21st century's techie youngsters. For one thing, the adjusted-for-inflation prizes are more impressive.

Players can collect $2 million dollars for passing “Go” instead of a mere $200 — practically what the average kid gets for losing a tooth these days. But it's bound to annoy die-hard fans of the comforting classic version, who might send it directly to jail come next fall. (At least they can take comfort in the fact that Monopoly: Revolution retains the classic Atlantic City-based street system.)

So far, the Internet echo chamber's biggest criticism focuses on the new version's tight security. It seems that when it comes to Monopoly, half the fun comes from cheating by stealing from the till when nobody's looking, a loophole the new version closes with its fancy electronic banking. (However, an electronic banking version has actually been on the market for years.) Surely our nation's tech-savvy youth will somehow find a way to game the "Monopoly" system, assuming they can be pried away from screens long enough to start a game.

This is how we do itBy Jayne UsenShow Dem Camp, or SDC, is the latest tag team to join the growing list of Hip-Hop heads on the Nigerian music scene. Olumide Ayeni a.k.a. Ghost and Wale Davies a.k.a. Tec are SDC and they say they are here to show how rap music is done. In this interview, both members respond but inform they speak as one collective voice. Why Show Dem Camp?Show Dem Camp is all about youth empowerment. A lot of times, people have some stigma attached to music, especially Rap. Even in a wider context, people try to break the convention to follow their dreams. So really, it is all about us telling people that they can pursue their dreams and love and still be happy with their choices and not be afraid to actually dream. We are showing the world at large that we are pursuing what we want to do and we are going to be successful at it.Has it always been music? Not really. We actually met each other at Coventry University in 2001, then music was a hobby. We hooked up during a rap battle in which we [went up against each other]. From then on, a mutual respect was born. We begun going around different Nigerian communities in various universities and from there it all began. With all Hip-Hop groups in Nigeria, why should I listen to SDC?We are different from everyone else and obviously, music is an expression of our different experiences going by all the different cultures we have experienced garnered from having visited various countries. We are fresh; we have been fortunate enough to reside in different places so we touch on different themes. When we moved back to Nigeria in 2008, people were telling us that our music was too different from that which is done here, that we had to tone it down. We are however happy that MI and Naeto C have really paved the way for a lot of rap artists in Nigeria. In the past, a lot of people thought Rap music was only all about shayo, however, now they realise that it is all about thoughts and ideas put together creatively. We have fused our experiences and sound into the Nigerian sound. What influences your sound?Basically from the different places we have been to. Our musical influences are a lot, but [primarily] people with a message from Fela to Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye, Nas, Tupac and Jay-Z; we have been able to put our message across in a palatable wayIs there an album in the works? We have two singles "Tell Me Nothin'" and "Yawa on the Dancefloor" already out. We are also working on The Dreamer project which will more or less be a compilation of works of various talented upcoming acts that believe in themselves and share the same passion and dream as ours. It will be released in the first quarter of the year. We also have the Memoirs project which will basically be about our life stories and experiences. We have a video for "Tell Me Nothin'" by Dayo Oyedele who worked on the Talib Kweli project shot in Nigeria. Are you signed to any label? No, we have our record label, Show Dem Records. We feel as though besides music, we both have backgrounds in business; we both studied Business anyway, so we are working on other businesses asides the music. We feel that nobody will be as passionate or know where we want to go as much as ourselves. We have our partners, Femi and Tolu, as well on the project. Some of the artists who will feature on the Dreamer project will be signed to our record label. We also do event and talent image management. How would you rate Rap music in Nigeria? It is growing incredibly but still has a long way to go. We remember when we used to come to Nigeria on holidays, the first person who caught our attention were Naeto C, and MI, because we saw that we could relate to a lot of their themes. MI came out and we were really amazed at his success because a lot of people now listen to lyrics, whereas in the past, Nigerian rappers just felt that all they needed to do was just party music all for dance. We used to have a problem with that, I remember us saying that if that was the kind of music they expect us to make, then we would rather not do music. It's not all about copying or following trends.

A weak currency and a steady decline in foreign reserves are hitting international students from Nigeria. Parents are finding it increasingly difficult to remit money to their children studying abroad, some students are considering continuing their studies at home, and many parents are shelving plans to send their offspring to foreign universities. But universities in Nigeria will be hard-pressed to accommodate those who do return. Commercial banks have received fewer applications from parents to process tuition fees for students abroad. An official at the Central Bank of Nigeria who did not wish to be named, said that last year more fee applications had been processed by the central bank on behalf of commercial banks. For the past eight months there has been a close correlation between the drop in the number of tuition fee applications for Nigerian students abroad and the weak local currency - the Naira - along with a gradual decline in the country's foreign currency holdings. Nkiru Okechukwu, an international economics expert, said the central bank had to prudently manage foreign reserves in its possession. "There are competing demands for these scare resources. Industries must import machines and raw materials. Refined petroleum products must be imported," Okechukwu said. Paying the tuition fees of students abroad was a relatively low priority. The value of the Naira has declined because of lower international demand for crude oil, Nigeria's economic mainstay, Okechukwu explained. A year ago the country exported about two million barrels of crude oil a day and the barrel was selling for around US$147. At that time Nigerian's foreign reserve was $67 billion. The story is different today: outgoing central bank governor, Chuwukuma Soludo, recently admitted that foreign reserves had dwindled from $48 billion to $ 45 billion in the last two months. These factors, along with job insecurity, have made remitting money for students abroad more and more difficult. Traditionally, Nigerian middle class parents have sent their children to study abroad and those who could afford it preferred to send them to Britain, North America or other Commonwealth countries. This is no longer the case. Apart from the weak local currency and shortfall in foreign reserves, closure of factories and businesses have led to retrenchment of managers - members of the middle class - as well as ordinary workers. Many parents who dreamed of sending their children to study overseas have changed their minds. Bayo Akin, an engineer in a manufacturing company in Lagos, said he simply could not afford to send his children abroad - and was not even sure he would keep his job. "The company I work for has informed my colleagues and myself that our parent company may fold because of the current international financial and economic crisis. Consumers are not buying our products," Akin said. Even a special scheme to assist Nigerian students in the UK is faltering. A Nigerian financial institution, Bank PHB, established a loan scheme to assist Nigerian students in Britain, called the UK Education Scheme. The scheme takes care of fees, accommodation and living costs for the duration of the beneficiary's course. But to benefit from the scheme, each student must open what the bank calls an education account with an initial deposit of about 50% of the fees stipulated by student's chosen university. Nduneche Ezurike, an official at the bank, said: "It is a product targeted at a particular market as a solution to a particular need." The problem is that the market is no longer there. A bank official, who did not want to be named, said the scheme had not attracted enough customers. "When we conceived of the loan scheme, some few years ago, we targeted professionals whose earning power was a source of envy. We felt that these professionals, who were in favour of a British university education, could afford to send their kids to UK. Then came the recession. And our potential customers fizzled out." A source close to the National University Commission revealed that an (undisclosed) number of Nigerian students in the UK had been making frantic enquiries whether they could apply for inter-university transfer to Nigerian universities so they could continue their studies at home. Two main categories of students were involved, the source said: students whose parents had lost their jobs and wanted to relocate with their families back in Nigeria, and parents who were no longer able to remit money to children abroad because they had been retrenched or because of the depreciation of the Naira. Like camels marooned in a desert and squabbling for water at an oasis, returning students will have to compete hard with other Nigerians for limited spaces in Nigerian universities. A few weeks ago, some 1.5 million Nigerians sat for common entrance tests into 95 universities whose carrying capacity, according to the NUC, is about 170,000 students. The battle for admission into the next academic session promises to be stiff for returning and home-based candidates.
