Following criticism of the federal government's plan to spend N16.4 billion on the celebrations of Nigeria's golden independent jubilee, President Goodluck Jonathan has slashed the anniversary budget to N9.5 billion.

The adjustments are included in the latest amended supplementary budget which the president presented to the national assembly for consideration and passage.

In a letter to the national assembly conveying his intentions, the president said listed the areas which the cuts affected and said it was a "slight amendment."
Contrary to widely circulated reports that the president, earlier, presented a budget of N10 billion for approval by the National Assembly for its Nigeria at 50 celebrations, the figures from the former supplementary budget shows that the actual figure that was budgeted for the event was N16.37 billion.

Nigeria asks for Akingbola's arrest, extradition

The Federal Government has sent a formal request to the government of the United Kingdom for the arrest and extradition to Nigeria of Erastus Akingbola, former managing director and chief executive officer of Intercontinental Bank. He is to face trial for fraud allegedly committed by him during his tenure as chief executive of the bank.

The letter, dated July 1, and signed by the Attorney General of the federation, Mohammed Adoke, was addressed to the British Home Secretary, the Home Office, and the United Kingdom Central Authority, London.

The request by the government was consequent upon a request from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for Mr. Akingbola to be extradited to face trial for 28 charges preferred against him for fraud-related offences at the bank.

List of offences

The charges cover allegations of financial misappropriation, money laundering, financial malpractices, corrupt practices, and other related offences pending against him at the Federal High Court (FHC), Lagos.

The Attorney General, who prayed the Home Secretary to grant the request in the interest of justice, said government's action was pursuant to the Extradition Act (Designation of Part 2 Territories) Order 2003 (SI2003 No.3334) of the United Kingdom, for the purpose of his being brought home to stand trial for the offences he is being charged.

The request was supported with an affidavit deposed to by Ibeakaku Nkechi Rita, a deputy superintendent of the EFCC, as well as a certification signed by Ahmed T. Almakura, senior state counsel of the Federal Ministry of Justice.

History

In the wake of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) intervention in the nation's banking sector, which resulted in the sack of the chief executives of five banks last year, Mr. Akingbola, who was abroad when he was sacked along with others, decided to stay away from the country.

This led to his being declared wanted by the anti-graft agency. He was declared wanted in connection with alleged fraudulent abuse of credit process, insider trading, capital market manipulation, and money laundering running into billions of naira.

Though several requests were reportedly sent to various international security agencies around the world, including the INTERPOL to help facilitate Mr. Akingbola's arrest and extradition, these appear to have been to no avail.

Property sealed off

Early this year, the EFCC sealed off his Lagos home, located at 12, Ruxton Road in Ikoyi, in line with the order of the Federal High Court, Lagos, presided over by Justice Tijuana Abubakar, that his assets be seized and his bank accounts frozen to help recover depositors' fund, allegedly misappropriated under his stewardship in the bank.

The court also granted an order of Mareva Injunction restraining Mr. Akingbola, his wife, Anthonia Tolulope Akingbola, his children, relatives, solicitors, servants, associates, trustees, agents, privies and companies from removing, alienating, disposing of, or diminishing the value of assets whether held directly or indirectly, or for his benefit within the jurisdiction of the court up to the amount set out, pending his trial.

The arrest and extradition order, which was dispatched by DHL Courier Services for his service at his known abode at No. 26 Chester Terrace, London, England, NW 14 ND, also restrained him from giving directions for sale, transfer, alienation, disposal, dealing with stocks, or other forms of securities held or kept by the central securities clearing system in Nigeria, or any custodian, stock broker, registrar, held whether directly or indirectly by him.

Parents and guardians of students of Kenneth Dike Memorial Secondary School, Awka, Anambra State, yesterday stormed the premises of the Anambra government house to protest what they termed government's silence over a recent shooting incident in the school that left 13 students injured..

On June 21 this year, gunmen suspected to have been hired by a land speculator involved in a land dispute with the school, opened fire at students of the school, moments after the students had pulled down the walls of the encroaching building. The attack sent 13 students to the hospital with varying degree of injuries.

The attack came barely six days after an attempt to abduct the school principal was foiled when the students pursued the kidnappers and drew the attention of the police. One of the kidnappers was arrested by the police.

Since the shooting, the school had been unceremoniously vacated by both students and teachers, even with examinations close at hand.

Worried by this development, parents of the students decided to take their case to the state government.

The chairman of the Parents-Teachers-Association, Innocent Anyaso, told NEXT that they were unhappy with government's silence, which he described as unusual.

He said the students had earlier trooped to government house to see the governor but were told he had travelled, a development that he said necessitated the visit of the parents.

Later, while channelling their grievances to Chuks Iloegbunam, representative of the government, the protesters requested the government to, among other things, fence the school; provide adequate security; help in offsetting the bill of the hospitalised students, and make the police to mount a checkpoint there..

Peaceful protest

Mr. Iloegbunam commended the parents on their peaceful disposition, as well as the role their children played in foiling the kidnap attempt on the principal. He restated government's commitment to the issue of security, and cited the recent resolution of south east governors to clamp down on kidnappers in the region.

He also noted that as part of the state government's commitment to the safety of the citizenry, each of the communities in the state had recently been given a N500, 000 security vote.

He recalled that the government had also mandated town union leaders to take care of security in their domains or risk being removed.

Mr. Iloegbunam promised to channel their case to the state governor, Peter Obi, once he returned from his trip.

Hottest Nollywood Twins Chidi & Chidi

Chidinma and Chidiebere Aneke are identical twins who started out as
ordinary girls in the movie industry. The sexy, and industrious sisters
have proved their mettle through determination and diligence. Over the
years, they have proven that hardwork pays and not fraternizing with
producers and directors make stars. Today, they can stand tall among
their peers and colleagues in the industry.

With theircreativity, they have also joined the league of movie producers and
production managers. Based in Enugu, where they are spreading their
tentacles in movie production amidst financial constraints, the
graduates of Mass Communication and Business Administration respectively
are owners of Greenville production company. They set up the company to
make their dreams a reality and to effectively manage their
investments. They told us recently about their new movie, how their
father’s death shaped their lives and their marriage plans. Excerpts:.

Aboutour new film ‘Ujuaku, the tigress’
The movie is about a man whomarried two wives, and was maltreating one of them because she didn’t
give him a male child. The second wife is wicked and heartless as she
tries to disrupt the peace at home. She hated the first wife with a
passion and turned her children against her and her husband as well. The
movie is an eye opener on polygamy and its attendant effects, it will
educate women on how to handle marital crisis without involving their
children because it could be disastrous. The movie is also about the
test of love because the polygamous man tested his wives to know who
loved him more.

The story line
The inspiration for the moviestemmed from various experiences of married women when there is crisis
in the home. A woman we know recently left her husband with her
children, which will in the long run have psychological effects on them.
A lot of women are not happy in their marriages and some of them even
die in the process.

Lessons for viewers
We wish to instructindividuals on the dangers of polygamy and stick to one man, one wife
rule. In addition, we hope to teach families how to wade through the
crisis of life with relative ease. Women in particular have to learn to
stick to their husbands no matter how bad the situation at home is, no
condition is permanent. The virtue of patience and endurance comes to
fore in Ujuaku the tigress.

Making impact with the movie inNigeria
Yes. Nigerians believe in what they see than what they hear. The movie addresses salient issues affecting families and individuals
making wrong choices, thereby educating them on being responsible for
their actions.

The cost of producing Ujuaku the tigress

Itcosts a lot but we will not reveal the exact amount because we have
sponsors. The cost of producing a movie is not a child’s play. We are
sure that we will reap our financial rewards despite the rate of piracy
in Nigeria.

Venturing into movie production
This is not thefirst movie we produced. We have been doing that, but we want to make
noise with this one because of its message. W

e will also marketit ourselves under our company Greenville Productions, unlike our
previous movies which we sold the right to marketers to market them for
us. We hope to meet and discuss issues with different marketers on
quantities they wish to distribute as well areas they wish to market
them.

Our Nollywood journey
We joined Nollywood in 2004.Since then, God has been faithful to us and we are doing well. We are
contented with the progress we have made so far, because a journey of a
thousand miles begins with a step. We may not be where we want to be,
but we will get there with God on our side. Life is a process and for
one to excel, that process has to be followed. We believe that patience,
hard work, tolerance, being yourself and having a friendly disposition
will help us get to the top.

Assessing Nollywood
It is acontinous journey in search of perfection. Nollywood is growing,
technically, and in terms of delivery by the actors and actresses.

MovingNollywood forward
Practitioners have to sit down and map outstrategies on how to improve the industry. The quality of movies have to
be more creative, original and impactful. There has to creative rivalry
which is healthy for the success of the industry. Seminars and
conferences where movie practitioners would be taught the rudiments of
film making as well as bringing in experts from developed countries to
rub minds with them on how to be the best movie makers in the world is
equally important.

Lack of moral values in youths
This can beattributed to the fall in the standard of family values. Parents have
failed in their duties to bring up their children properly thereby
giving rise to social vices and criminal tendencies. At times, parents
lie in the presence of their children and expect them to be truthful
always, it does not work that way. Children are taught by what they see
and not what they hear.

Parents no longer provide an atmosphereof dialogue or discussion with their kids, they are left on their own.
They have also failed in being role models for their children as they
are no longer the source of strength for them. Mothers especially are
guilty in discipliningtheir children whenever they go wrong, they wait
for their husbands to do that, it is wrong. Correct a child anytime it
is necessary and tell him or her why you are being strict.

Ourcareer dreams
There are many plans in the offing which will have tobe a secret for now so that it would remain original. When the time is
right, we will unveil them to Nigerians, we are just starting as movie
producers. We hope to achieve more in our acting and producing careers.
We have not arrived yet as this is a starting point for us.

Aboutus
Growing up, we were taught to be independent and that made usstrong and determined to take our destinies into our hands. We decided
not to look for white collar jobs, but work independently, that also
propelled us to go into acting. We studied Business Administration and
Mass Communications respectively so as to make a good team working
together as actresses and producers.

How we react to criticisms
Webelieve in constructive and not destructive criticisms. Our movies are
first criticized by our friends because we give room for improvement in
everything we do. We are always happy to be corrected but not in a
damaging way. We love criticisms.

Childhood memories
It wassweet and wonderful because our father loved us to bits. He would always
take us to the market to buy clothes and insists on getting the same
clothes and designs for us. If for any reason we don’t get the same
clothes, we leave the market and return another day.

We alsoplayed a lot of pranks with him because he couldn’t differentiate us
until he died. After his death, a lot happened that left us bankrupt .
We started afresh in life to the extent that we started hawking akara
and bread, pure water and mango. We were happy doing that because we
knew that it won’t last as no condition is permanent and because we know
that our future is bright.

On marriage
We want to getmarried same day. We would like to marry twin brothers but God
determines what is best for us because His ways are higher than our
ways.

Our love lives
We do not wish to discuss that but weare happy. We love life and what it offers but our love life remains
private.

Future plans
We wish to have 2 sets of twins of twoboys and two girls. To have happy homes and live happily with our
husbands.

Taking abus in Ghana – be it Intercity STC, Metro MT, or a simple trotro – youmay be allowed to think for all of five minutes. Then one of a fewthings will happen:

1.the driver will turn on a radio station.Loudly.
2.a preacher will start preaching (to the already-converted. Ijust don’t get that).
3.the driver will start showing a series ofNollywood or Ghallywood (I hate that name) movies.
4.all or more thanone of the above.
I was trying to get some shut-eye on an STC tripfrom Cape Coast over the weekend. The driver was hurtling us towardsAccra at breakneck speed to make it on-time for the Black Stars gameagainst the US. I was just succumbing to sleep when… the buses twoscreens flickered on..

Sh*t.

For the rest of the ride, Iwas subjected to The Female Lion I, The Female Lion II (why not TheLioness?) and The Signs of End Times. Even by local standards, all threewere rubbish and won’t be winning any Academy Awards for acting, screenplay, soundtrack, special effects (that’s not what happens whenyou shoot people at close range…) or imagination. It got me thinkingthough: what would it take to transform a Hollywood film into aNollywood/Ghallywood one?

Based on these three films, here’s whatI came up with.

◦Change the actors and setting to Nigeria orGhana
◦Try and make the lead actor light-skinned
◦Divide the filminto two or three parts
◦If each film is not long enough, prolong itby reducing the amount of editing you do (e.g. spend two or three wholeminutes playing a song and focusing on the hero/heroine doing housework,to establish that they are hardworking)
◦In any scene withbackground music, replace the music with someone playing an electronicorgan
◦In any scene without any background music, replace the musicwith someone playing an electronic organ
◦You can never get enoughelectronic organ music
◦Replace any decent special effects with thesame special & sound effects that were used in 1960s TV shows likeStar Trek
◦If there’s no scene with shouting, insert one and makesure to distort the sound when the shouting hits high decibels
◦Getyour electronic organist to compose a song that tells you the theme ofthe movie and helps you to give away the ending
◦Option: someoneneeds to get bitch-slapped up in there. Tradition demands it.
Thatwas all the fun I could come up with before we got into Accra… where Ihad the sublime pleasure of watching the Black Stars change the name ofthe American soccer team from ‘the Stars and Stripes’ to ‘black andblue’..

I’d love to get into Nollywood and Ghanaian films. Iwould. And I applaud directors who do not conform to the above-mentionedstereotypes. But I was raised on internationally award-winning localfilms like Heritage Africa and Love Brewed in the African Pot. I’m notsaying don’t have romance or melodrama. I do however wish there was moreof a balance between commercial-driven films and art.

Back inschool, the release of a Ghanaian film was a major event, with studentsfrom all over Cape Coast meeting in Mfansipim to watch Kwaw Ansah’sclassics as they were projected onto the white wall of our assembly hallstage.

If I was a money-conscious movie director, I’d aim tomake a small, decent film that would win me international awards. In thelong run, this is more commercially sensible. Ask Alfonso Cuaron, theMexican who directed Y Tu Mama Tambien, got Oscar-nominated and went onto direct Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban. Or South AfricanGavin Hood who directed Tsotsi, won the first Oscar awarded to anAfrican film and went on to do Wolverine.

You may or may nothave liked either film but I’m guessing Azkaban and Wolverine both mademore money than the highest-earning Nollywood movie that year.

Whichdid wonders for their directors’ pockets.

Tolling Bells By Bisi Ojediran

Very many of Nigeria’s rich people have either been in government or around government. Somehow this is the grim reality the raging thunderstorm over the remuneration of legislators is opening the public eye to.

And so questions are thundering in: Is governance about enriching people in government or the governed? Why are people in government making so much money, while poverty spreads in a potentially rich country? Many questions!

Although there are no ready figures, those available validate the skewed income distribution in Nigeria, and growing poverty and desperation.

One: In making the case for Microfinance banks, the Central Bank of Nigeria acknowledged that Nigeria has a highly unequal income distribution profile: about eight percent of those that have access to financial services own about 90 per cent of the available deposits..

Two: According to The World Distribution of Income by Xavier Sala-i-Martin, one of the largest increases in poverty rates occurred in Nigeria, rising from 14.5 percent of the population in 1970 to over 50 per cent in 2000.

Three: Poverty in Nigeria worsens: According to the Gini coefficient, commonly used as a measure of inequality of income or wealth, in 2003, the lowest 10 of the population owned only 1.9 per cent of the national income, while the highest 10 per cent owned 33.2 per cent. Also, according to the 2010 Global Monitoring Report of UNESCO, about 92 per cent of the Nigerian population survive on less than $2 daily, while about 71 per cent survive on less than $1 daily. By this popular measure, about 70 per cent of the country’s population are poor.

During the period under consideration, the country, blessed with enormous oil and gas resources, an array of minerals and rich, arable land, enjoyed five oil booms.

Whatever happened to governance, when it is to guarantee the socio-economic and human rights of the people? It is governance that creates an enabling environment for jobs to be provided; for food to be put on the table; and for people to sleep with both eyes closed in a secured environment.

In the current Nigerian situation, it looks like only people in government are guaranteed all that. With progressive national socio-economic infrastructure decay, the lack of basic amenities and an environment of high cost of living, the living standards of the people has continued to fall.

Worse, there is growing unemployment and widespread poverty in an environment with growing insecurity such that innocent people are easily kidnapped from places of worship, leisure or work.

Of course, in advancing the case of Nigeria’s rich and poor, I do not forget the subset of honest Nigerians who made their wealth through ingenuity, tenacity and hard work. I hold in very high esteem people like the Samuel Adedoyins, the Dangotes, the Akintola-Williams, some of today’s resourceful bankers and others in the private sector.

The problem really is with people in the set of the rich who are obligated to ensure the welfare of the people they govern. A trend is becoming discernable: Take the selfless founding fathers of the nation, some of who lived humble and frugal lifestyles. Take people like the late former Prime Minister, Tafawa Balewa.

Please, let’s cut!

Enter the military: Apart from a very few, the military governments enriched all of its officials. Today, long after the military era, they are still rich.

The story has not changed, even with the return of democracy. The system tends to enrich the people in government. Current remuneration levels in estimated annual salaries, allowances and fringe benefits of the nation’s political office holders at all tiers of government is estimated at some N1.3 trillion.

Hot on the debating table is the disproportionate remuneration of the federal lawmakers, which is the highest in the world. In some calculations, some five per cent of the country’s annual budget is spent on the 109 Senators and 360 members of the House of Representatives.

But the issue doesn’t stop there. Much of the wealth of this group of rich Nigerians is by looting. Evidence of this is not difficult to find. Nuhu Ribadu’s battle with some former state governors who looted their state treasuries is one.

The recent remarks of his successor, Farida Waziri is another. She described the House of Representatives as a centre of scandals.

Also, hard as some people try to paper up massive bribery scandals such as the Halliburton and Siemens scandals, there is enough information in the public domain already.

But in the Nigerian reality, those in government do not seem to care about the people who “put them there” assuming their votes counted. To get into office, they promise perfectly selfless and virtuous intentions. They want to feed the poor, house the homeless, and cure the sick. But it is all looking like the system was never intended to serve anyone other than those who control it.

So bad is the gulf between the rich and poor in Nigeria that any “government of the people” must be seen to address the imbalance. President Goodluck Jonathan, who offers a fresh breath of air, should make governance benefit the poor too.

I do not recommend a Robin Hood–type of income redistribution which normally attracts hostile reaction from the rich. Nigerians are very resourceful. Many of them can make decent livelihood if infrastructure like electricity is functional. Government should faithfully discharge its obligation to the people by making social and economic amenities available.

Additionally, there should be carefully planned income redistribution to benefit the poor majority of Nigerians through progressive taxation and welfare or increased generousity to the poor.

Like President Lula of Brazil, the most popular politician in the world, let people in government show concern for the governed, particularly the poor.

Nollywood comes to Asaba .

It’s no longer news that the ancient city of Asaba has transformed into the hobnob for film production in the country. But what is news instead, is the fact that the invading movie stars and producers have taken permanent residence in some of the major hotels located within the town.
HVP check last weekend in Asaba confirmed this development.

Some of the stars, HVP gathered have been living in the hotels in the past two to three months either soliciting roles, or probably waiting to complete their own side of an agreement with a particular producer or the other.

However, HVP investigation also revealed that while majority of the patrons of these hotels are aspiring actors and actresses as well as some few known faces in the industry, prostitutes in the town are not left out as they are now disguising themselves as stars to solicit customers.Rendering-of-Asaba-airport-front-elevation-courtesy-skyscrapercity-forums.jpg

In fact, the only known popular place where the crew members assemble on daily basis, Zenith Hotel is fast turning into a brothel. Unengaged young girls, half-nude if you like, whose faces may not sell any film are sighted hanging around the hotel to beckon upon patronage.

“You can see that the hotel bills here are cheap and additionally, there’s relative peace here and we also enjoy security . ” one of the stars stressed.

Adding he said, “during the kidnapping era, the State government provided us with security, such that anytime we were on location , the police would there with us. Again, you find out that Asaba is where things are happening currently as far as Nollywood is concerned. So from time to time, most of us breeze in here to see if we will be lucky to get a job.”

Indeed, in Asaba, hotel bills are not too expense. With the sum of N2500 to N3000, you will get yourself a comfortable hotel apartment.’a star said.

Shooting last weekend of the suspense-filled film by Guinks Venture, titled “ Enemies Within” in Asaba brought this revelation to the fore.

The film, directed by Ugezu J. Ugezu parades a galaxy ofNollywood stars, including Emeka Ike, Mike Ezuruonye, Mercy Johnson, Amaechi Mmuonago, Linda Chiyere and Joyce Kalu. Other are Ihuoma Nnadi, Rita Arum, a Cameroonian actress, Yufh Solange and Ghanaian Actus Frank.

On the film, the executive producer, Mr Uzo Godson Nwaosu said, the big budget film resolves around the subject of greed and its negative effects. ‘It is the story of a rich man who made his money through a dubious means by embarked on the elimination of every obstacle that will stand on his way to achieving an everlasting success. But had his hands burnt in the process, as his past emerged to hunt his present.”

According to him, the film which took him about three month to put together will hit the market in two months time..

Long before Nkem Owoh became the toast of Nollywood comedy, he forged asuccessful partnership with Okey Mac-Anthony aka Okey Bakasi in a fewhome videos that would later help sit him atop the humour pedestal. Oneof their collaborations, Yogo Pam Pam was a mid-90s sequel to theirfirst, Pam Pam..

Adventures of Loco and Mambo

Mambo (Owoh)and Loco (Mac-Anthony) are two ill-oriented ambitious friends who willdo anything, except work, to make money. Their desperation got evenhotter when a friend of Mambo’s promised to take them to America if theycould raise a certain amount within a month. Eager to travel abroad, the two not so smart and naive friends attempt various ways to con theirway to their target. They involved Yogo, a girl whose love they’d bothtried to win unsuccessfully, to join in their con rackets because shewas desperate to leave her stepmother who had been consistentlypressuring her to get married.

All through the movie, the duo, with Yogo in tow, provided viewers with great humour. Theirludicrousness was actually fun to watch. In an instance, while Loco wastrying to woo Yogo, he went to her house and met her reading a magazine;the following conversation ensued:

Loco: You dey read magazine?

Yogo:No, I dey baf!

In its time

A re-watch of this moviereveals that the slapstick remains irresistible and each characterappears well suited for his/her role. The young barber who probably washaving his movie debut at the time also fit well into the comedy. Afterrendering a crazy, patchy haircut he called ‘Fuel Scarcity’, he escapesgetting lynched by the unfortunate customer whose hair he justrubbished, ridiculously saying afterwards, “If I had known, I for barbam Up Nepa!” Crazy isn’t it?

Even though Yogo Pam Pam cannot besaid to be the duo’s best movie ever, it sure stood as one of the bestin its time.

For sometime now, lovers of Nigeria movie industry have been lamentingthe level in which nude films are flocking the Nigerian movie marketwhich is quite odd to the norms and ethics of the society.

It wasgathered that some actresses who are shooting movies in recent timesare insisting that producers lure them into acting films with onlypanties on. It was further stated that Asaba, Delta State is graduallybecoming the site of production of nude movies as an up and comingactress was forced to act in a movie that has not been released withonly pant and bra.

As if this is not enough, a movie thatshowcased the perverted nature of homosexual act is set to hit theshelves. Meet God's Gift Achiuwa, a 6-foot-9 forward at Erie Community College who has already caught the attention of some high-profile Division I programs because of both his stellar play and unusual name. The Nigeria native's father is a minister, so the first name he chose for his son is a reflection of the family's devout religious beliefs..

"His name is the first thing that anyone asks about when they meet him," Erie coach Alex Nwora said by phone. "Everyone thought it was a nickname or something, but that's his real name. Fortunately, he's a religious kid, so he likes it."

In the nine months since Nwora discovered Achiuwa at an annual camp the coach runs in Nigeria and brought him back to Erie, the bruising power forward has tried to make sure he's known for more than just his name. He averaged 13.1 points, 13.5 rebounds and two blocks per game as a freshman, earning third-team all-American honors and helping lead Erie to a 27-2 record.

Achiuwa has also excelled in the classroom at Erie, earning a 4.0 GPA in the fall semester and a 3.8 in the spring. Kansas recently called about him, according to Nwora, and Pittsburgh, St. John's and Tennessee are among other programs that have shown an interest.

"He came in a little bit on the raw side, but playing a lot has helped him," Nwora said. "He's come a long way from when we ended the season and he hasn't stopped yet. He's still training like we begin the season tomorrow. I think all around he needs more polish, but he can play with the best of them."

Nwora said Achiuwa doesn't have a nickname, though his teammates sometimes call him "Gift" for short.

For a kid as gifted as Achiuwa on the court and in the classroom, it's a more fitting name than you'd think.

Van Gaal's influence in the World Cup Finals
.

When you trace the roots of the winning teams of this football World Cup, every clue points to one man: Louis van Gaal. The flat-faced Amsterdammer who coaches Bayern Munich is the secret mastermind behind three of the four semi-finalists: Holland, Germany and Spain.

Of course van Gaal was only continuing the life’s work of his soulmate-cum-enemy, Johan Cruyff. The two men despise each other, but have almost identical football ideologies. Both grew up playing for their local club, Ajax, fetishising the pass.

Never pass into a teammate’s feet, lectured Cruyff, but always a metre ahead of him to keep the ball moving. When the first man passes to the second man, the third man must already be moving into space ready for the second man’s pass.

Cruyff became manager of Ajax in 1985 and moved to Barcelona in 1988. He transformed both clubs’ academies into universities of the pass. Later Van Gaal succeeded him, first at Ajax then at Barcelona. In Catalonia, Van Gaal promoted great passers such as Xavi and Andres Iniesta, who today run Spain’s midfield.

No wonder half the Dutch team here was raised at Ajax, or that seven Spanish players who finished Saturday’s quarter-final against Paraguay learned their football at Barca’s academy. Whether it is Xavi or Holland’s Wesley Sneijder, these players spent their youth absorbing Cruyffian ideology: football is about making passing “triangles”. Boys at Barca are forever playing four against four, with two touches allowed. It is a game you win through passing and positioning. Football as chess, not football as wrestling.

Germans had always treated football as a kind of chess in which wrestling was permitted. They delegated passing to a few specialists. But in 2000, when the Germans hit rock-bottom, they peered across the Dutch frontier. They began fetishising the pass. At Euro 2008 Germany reached the final, where Spain passed them off the park. Joachim Löw, Germany’s coach, thought: “I want a team like that.”

A year later, Van Gaal popped up as Bayern Munich’s manager, and fetishised the pass. The club that never cared how it won began playing Dutch-Spanish football. Van Gaal turned Bayern’s Bastian Schweinsteiger into a defensive midfielder, and stuck Thomas Müller in the first 11. Here in South Africa, “Schweini” and Müller are starring for Germany. Their teammates in Munich, Arjen Robben and Mark van Bommel, are starring for Holland.

German, Dutch and Spanish football have crossbred to become almost indistinguishable. The Germans pass like Holland in disguise. The Dutch defend and counterattack like Germans used to. Spain play like Holland circa 2000.

Other countries might note the things this trio does not worry about. The English media are calling for more spirit. Diego Maradona, Argentina’s manager, kept talking about passion. All that Van Gaalians ask is: “Can you pass at speed?” If you can, you are selected. That is why Germany can field their youngest team since 1934. Experience and physique are secondary. Sneijder, Xavi, Iniesta and Germany’s captain Philip Lahm are all 5’8” or smaller. But they understand passing.

Individual genius is strictly optional, too. The Brazilian and Argentinian geniuses are now on holiday. Most previews of this tournament focused on stars. Instead they should have focused on passing cultures. Every team touched by two ageing Amsterdammers stuck in a mutual loathing society is still here.

Although 56-year-old suspect, Shuaib Atanda, is a contractor engaged by the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba, to dispose unclaimed corpses of babies, police said his inability to give a satisfactory answer to what he was doing with some sacks stuffed with 66 dead babies, may soon land him in trouble.

click to expand image"He showed documents to back his claims, but he could not give a satisfactory explanation why he had to travel all the way from Idi Aba to Agbowa to dispose the corpses." Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Frank Mba, said on Tuesday.

But Atanda told PUNCH METRO that he had been a contractor with the LUTH for two years.

"What I do is to evacuate abandoned dead babiesfrom the university. It was not different last Saturday as I was given 66 dead babies to evacuate and deposit at Atan cemetery in Yaba.

Forty of the dead babies were those unclaimed for the month of March, While 26, were for the month of April." he said.

Atanda alleged that after bribing some staff of the LUTH, he discovered that the amount left from the N185,000 the hospital paid him would not be enough to bury the corpse at Atan cemetery.

He said,"There was no money left for me to buy a space at Atan cemetery where we usually bury them. The cemetery would collect between N90,000 and N100,000 before one can get a space. But I have bribed nearly everybody in that department (Morbid and Anathomy) before I could get that contract.

"For instance, I gave N50,000 to O/C mortuary; I gave N40,000 to one Everest in that department, two workers in the account department also collected N10,000 each. That was the usual practice; I have been doing this job for a long time.

"So at the end of the day, I had to take a risk and decide to find a bush to bury the children because I also needed money to feed my family. The police caught me on the way," he said, denying that he went with the corpses to Agbowa for any other purpose.

When questioned why he had to go as Agbowa to bury the corpses, Atanda, who denied having ulterior motive for his action, simply said, "I am sorry."

But the head of department of Morbid and Anathomy, Prof. Kumbi Banjo, said the LUTH was already investigating Atanda's allegation. "It is true that he is our contractor to clear unclaimed baby corpses. We have such corpses on ground because many people were so devastated by their losses that they just abandoned the corpses. We have to evacuate such babies who had been there for a long time. But the university is looking into this problem, he said.

The 'O/C mortuary,' who is actually the principal head Assistant of Morbid and Anathomy, Mr. Abraham Ekhome, denied Atanda's allegation. "It is a mere fabrication. We use about four contractors and I have Never collected any bribe or gift from them," he said.

However, Mba said police preliminary investigation into the matter also led to the arrest of some workers in the department of Morbid and Anathomy of the teaching hospital.

He said police investigation was still continuing, adding "For Now, we are satisfied that Atanda is a bonafide contractor with LUTH and that he was charged with the duty of disposing abandoned dead babies. We are sure the suspect is neither a ritualist nor a murderer nor trafficker. Other contending issues like corruption and abuse of office will be investigated."

Zain Gets NEW Name ! !

For the sixth time, Zain Nigeria has got a new name. The mobile phone company that started trading as Econet in 2001 and the first to be licensed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) became Bharti Airtel Nigeria on Tuesday, following the sale of Zain Africa to Bharti Airtel India.

At a press conference in Lagos, the management staff of Bharti Airtel Group reaffirmed that the new management and brand are committed to doing business in Nigeria, its turbulent history notwithstanding.

NEXT reported in our February 28 edition, that Broad Communications, a major shareholder of Zain Nigeria, had accused the majority shareholders, Zain Group, Kuwait, of mismanagement, fraud, and capital flight to the tune of N16.6 billion. Broad further accused Zain Kuwait of not paying its shareholders dividends since the Kuwait group started managing the firm.

In June, Broad again filed a suit against the directors of Zain Nigeria over the five-year lease of the company's head office at Ikoyi for $27 million..

Oba Otudeko, the company chairman said on Tuesday, "You do not require any education on the history of our company through all the twists and turns over the years. One thing I must say, however, is that our resilience and the grace of God have left us stronger and more resolved to serve you better.

"Indeed we have come a long way and achieved a number of remarkable milestones, as reflected in numbers of firsts that we have recorded in the Nigerian telecom industry. On behalf of the board and management, I want to assure Nigerians that our best is yet to come."

Also speaking, Rajan Swaroop, the new chief executive officer said, "Let me also reaffirm our commitment as a business to continue to go the extra mile to meet and exceed the expectations of our customers. With Bharti Aritel, we can only do better. Bharti Aritel would build on the momentum of activities to ensure we provide quality services to all Nigerians, irrespective of their economic power and social status."

A new name all the time

The company started as Econet Wireless Nigeria (2001); Vodacom Nigeria (2004); and the same year to V-Mobile Nigeria; Celtel Nigeria (2006); to Zain Nigeria (2008) and now Bharti Airtel Nigeria.

According to Manjo Kohli, the Africa group chief executive officer of Bharti Airtel, the new brand name would coincide with the 50th Independence anniversary of Nigeria on October 1.

"We will invest $600 million in Bharti Airtel Nigeria in the next three years. Fifty per cent of that amount would come up in the first year. We have looked that the Nigerian telecom industry and have discovered three issues: quality of service, freedom to make calls and affordability of service which we would work on to provide quality service to consumers," added Mr Kohli.

Subscribers are, however, concerned about the quality of service following another name change. Deolu Ogunbanjo, the president of the National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATCOMS) said via phone, "Somehow, I do not expect that the new change in name would affect them because of their subscriber's volume but may affect them if their quality of service becomes bad.

"Once they zero their mind on the quality of service and cheaper tariffs, then they would be able to survive the change. Considering the volume of subscribers Bharti Airtel has around the world and its history, it would be able to bring down Nigerian tariff."

Frank Okafor, a subscriber said, "I am not concerned about their change of name but about the quality of their service which I hope improves soon or they will lose subscribers."

Following the acquisition of Zain Africa in 15 countries, Bharti Airtel becomes the fifth largest mobile company in the world with over 180 million customers across its business units.
