There are many lifestyle and environmental causes of low sperm countWe’ve compiled a check list. Positive changes can help!

lifestyle environmental causes of low sperm count

Half of all infertility cases are male related! The good news is that low sperm count is the most common reversible cause of male factor infertility.

Firstly, there are certainmedical conditions or prescription medicationsthat can interfere with male fertility.

Some common medical conditions or previous testicular injury can impair sperm production. It’s advised to have a general check up with your personal physician to diagnose or manage any health issues that may contribute towards low sperm count. Occasionally a change or an adjustment of a particular medication may be required. If necessary your doctor will refer you onto a specialist for further evaluation.

Sperm quality is just as important – some of these factors below also effect sperm motility (movement and speed) and morphology (shape). Semen can also suffer (fluid that contains spermatozoa). These criteria influence the chances of conception taking place.

Causes of low sperm count and other abnormalities

Often there’s a few contributing factors -

Stress – adrenal hormones can interfere with the production of our major sex hormones. Chronic stress leads to other health ailments which can eventually interfere with the reproductive system.

Nutritional deficiencies and poor eating habits – lack of fresh organic fruit and vegetables. Eating too many processed products, refined foods, sugars, and fats.

Pesticides - present on conventional fruit and vegetables. Responsible for numerous health issues.

Growth hormones - found in conventional animal products. Associated with estrogen dominance related conditions.

Too much alcohol – depletes vitamins and minerals from the body. An overworked liver can cause a rise in estrogen.

Excessive caffeine consumption – linked to several sperm problems. Mostly found in coffee, tea, chocolate, cola, energy drinks, and some medications. There are other types of caffeine based stimulants people use to help keep awake (e.g. in tablet form).

Overheating of the scrotum – one of the common causes of low sperm count. Hot baths, saunas, and electric blankets can overheat sperm producing cells in the testicles. Exposure to heat in the work environment. Using a laptop on your knees (heat produced by battery) has been proved to increase scrotal temperature. Long hours driving or sitting. Tight underwear or trousers, or constantly keeping legs crossed/pressed together can trap heat.

Sleep deprivation – an array of health complaints and illnesses including fertility problems.

Lack of exercise – too little physical activity can lead to sluggish circulation and poor health, which can become causes of low sperm count.

Overexertion - some men go to the extreme and overexert themselves, which risks sperm supply by overheating. Prevalent in endurance athletes.

Regular bike riding - poses a risk because of pressure and friction against the seat restricting blood flow to the testicles.

Obesity – fat cells secrete estrogen. The consequence is a diminished testosterone level (hormone needed for sperm production). Skin folds covering the genital may also be a problem for obese men, as the testicles can overheat effecting sperm count.

Underweight - hormonal imbalance is a possibility. Lack of essential nutrients required for sperm production.

Smoking cigarettes – major cause of poor sperm quality. Known to cause agglutination (sperm cells clumping together). Can damage genetic material within the sperm cells.

Abuse of anabolic steroids - suppresses the testes ability to produce testosterone.

Marijuana use – includes sperm motility problems which make it harder to reach the female egg.

Other recreational drugs, substance abuse – can cause DNA damage, therefore putting future offspring at risk.

EMF exposure (electromagnetic field) – cell phones in pockets near the crotch, laptops placed on knees, and electric blankets.

X-rays – any rapidly dividing cells are affected, including sperm cells. The genital area should have a protective shield whenever possible. Higher doses of x-ray radiation have more severe effects on sperm production.

Hidden environmental toxins and hormone disruptors (xenoestrogens) – one of the not so obvious causes of low sperm count! Found all around us in a variety of unsuspecting places, such as cleaning products in the home, plastic food packaging, and the personal care products that we use on a daily basis.

Hazards in the workplace - many men work with and around toxic substances, chemicals, and heavy metals, which can be damaging to sperm cells. Precautionary measures should always be enforced and practiced.

Extra considerations

Recent sickness – illness, infections, and fever can result in temporary sperm depletion for up to three – four months after the ailment has passed.

Frequent ejaculation – can lower sperm count.

Lubricants – There’s specifically designed lube for couples trying to conceive. Only use sperm friendly lubricants as other brands are inhospitable to sperm cells and can damage or kill them.

Help with the above common causes of low sperm count!

causes of low sperm count improve qualitySperm cells are constantly being produced, although they take around three – four months to mature enough for ejaculation. Certain lifestyle adjustments can make a difference! By addressing any factors that can decrease sperm count (given time) you can help replenish your “swimmers” and improve their quality.

A look at this lady will never give her away for a man. From her breast and well shaped figure, to her steps , she looks every inch like a lady. But the bubble burst after she was discovered to be a man.

In a Strange Case of What a Woman Can Do A Man might just get caught doing it .

19-year-old Ogunleye Idris, is one of the numerous young men who pose as ladies out there , in order to get money from their men folk.

Idris who just finished his secondary school education at Kings college Lagos, last year, was apprehended in a bar in Surulere area of Lagos, Sunday, where he had as usual, dressed like a man, waiting for a prey.

By sheer stroke of luck, a man(names withheld) reportedly walked into the bar in the company of two other ladies. But he was said to have been attracted to Idris who gave him an inviting look.

But Idris attitude was said to have raised the man's suspicion, when he attempted to fondle with his breast. Out of curiosity, the man reportedly managed to touch Idris' breast, where to his surprise, a sachet water fell off from the brazier. This caused an uproar, following which Idris was subsequently arrested.

In this interview with crime Alert, the Ogun state born disclosed that he began the illicit business this month, with a view of raising money to further his education.12166297482?profile=original

Hear him, " I went into it in order to raise money for my education. After my secondary school education, my father told me he could not afford money for me to buy JAMB form. Again there was nobody to help me because I am a man... I realized that men do not help their fellow men but women. Then, I decided to start dressing like a lady to deceive men and get money from them but I do not sleep with them. Whenever it gets to that stage, I stylishly excuse myself"

Asked how he usually collected money from men, he revealed that he would dial any number and if the owner happened t o be a man, he would invite him over, posing as a club girl. His preys according to him, sometimes fell into his trap while others disregarded him.

Continuing, Idris said, "so far, I have realised N20,000, out of which I used to buy part time form in University of Lagos and a JAMB form"

Asked if his parents are aware of what he was into, he shook his head, explaining that he never paraded himself like a lady around his vicinity in Isolo. On how he usually got himself dressed, he explained, " first , I would get a female dress and place two sachets of water on my breast, to make me look like a female and then, I will wear female shoes. I cat-walk like women because I always watch them walk and have been practicing the way they walk until I started this year. I had contemplated quitting at the end of next month,", he said.

The Lagos State Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Mr Adesanya Jinadu, who cautioned men to be and wary of the likes of Idris out there, said he would be charged to court for attempt to defraud and attempt to breach public peace.

Once you go white you can't go broke or heart break !
Photo:Black & White couple, Oluchi, popular model, with her white husband. More Nigerian girls want to marry white men.
While some of these girls are undergraduates in various higher institutions of learning in the country, others are just trying to make ends meet.
.
Some of these white men are in Nigeria for greener pastures while others are called upon by companies operating in the country to take up jobs because of their technical know-how.

The girls often meet these men, a term used to describe Europeans, White Americans and Asians, in places like night clubs, bars, shopping malls and parties.

One of the girls, Osagie Ruth, confirmed that Nigerian girls prefer white men because they spend money without thinking twice. He also said they were more romantic.

Citing an instance, Ruth, who is excited about having white men as lovers, said she has vowed never to date any black man until when she is ready for marriage.

According to her, this vow became necessary after experiencing several heartbreaks with Nigerian men.

“Can you believe that the last one I dated was a married man with three kids? He never told me he was married until I almost got lynched by his wife who saw us while we were in the heat of passion in his supposed house.

“I would have been dead by now. The worst part of it was that he hardly gave me money for my upkeep and he monitored my daily activities as if I was in prison custody, yet I stayed in the relationship as I needed a man desperately,” she explained.

She said she was introduced into the “business” by a friend and since then she has “been living in the sweetest world.

“I now have a Honda car and a well furnished apartment.”

Another girl, who maintained anonymity said she prefers dating white men because “they are more understanding and they give us freedom to do a lot of things compared to their Nigerian counterparts.”

She said she could date other men and engage in other ventures that would fetch her money without the prying eyes of her white guys. But that is not the case with the Nigerian men, who she described as greedy and crooked in their love life.

“They prefer hiding you somewhere and doing it only in secret places with you for fear of being recognised by other people.

“But the white men are always proud to move around with you openly. They are proud of what they have even if we are only with them for money.”

Asked why she loves dating only white men, Philomena Okeke, an undergraduate, retorted: “Why I no go date them? Even if they look like albinos, it is a matter of closing my eyes when we are having fun. I begin to think of black people when it is happening.

“Though I hate them, I need their money. I have also had many heartbreaks from Nigerian men and I decided to give the whites a try. I have no regrets so far.”

P.M.NEWS also gathered from the girls that not all the white men are nice. The ones from Asian countries, India and Lebanon do not like to spend. According to some of the girls, men from these areas prefer paying peanuts after satisfying themselves.

“When dealing with people from these areas, we collect our money first. I am not an animashaun (meaning free giver in Yoruba)” one of the girls, who was seen hanging out with a white man in an eatery told P.M. NEWS.

However, some of the white men are said to be so happy with the ladies that they could go as far as buying houses and cars for them and sending them on vacation abroad.

Ijeoma, a 28-year old lady, who now has two kids for a white man residing in the country, agreed that the reasons for the preference varied.

According to her, “one thing that a black girl sees in a white guy is money in this part of the world because of poverty.

“For others, they want to be seen that they are powerful girls that can trap a white guy. Others want to have a white baby, get married and have security.

“Sometimes, a white guy in Africa might be having a hard time and the next thing on his mind is to go out and bang just any girl. You will find such guys mostly around bars, clubs, etc.

“Now, the girl in return wants a guy to sell her body too and get some few change and they talk, arrange to meet and he takes her to his place and they have sex. He pays her off and other times, there is a huge argument, the girl wants more money probably because she knows she will never see him again and instead of taking N5,000 she will demand for N50,000.

“These white guys also get better pay and remember, they are expatriates, and while their families are abroad, they need to have fun and they discovered that there are loads of loose girls here.

“The second type of girls that go for white guys want to be perceived as powerful, big girls. They travel with the white men, live high class life and have a good sex life. You see these girls driving powerful cars and living in high brow areas of the city.”

Tension has enveloped the sleepy village of Akabor, Ahiara in Ahiazu Local Government Area of Imo State after 45-year-old Bernard Anyanwu beheaded his only son, Chikaodi, in a forest on Wednesday.

The incident, a reminiscent of the infamous “Otokoto” saga of Owerri, has sparked off fear and apprehension as some Akabor residents have started fleeing home for fear of being arrested.

The Otokoko saga emerged from the killing of one master Ikechukwu Okonkwo for rituals, which triggered a chain of violent protests in Owerri in 1996. Indigenes of Owerri, particularly the youths, women and children, took to the streets en masse to burn and destroy property believed to belong to suspected ritual killers who are today referred to as the Otokoto Seven. Photo: Headhunters in police net inset one of their victims

The fearful Otokoto drama reached its peak in 1997, when about six men were publicly executed by firing squad over alleged armed robbery charges and ritual killings. Those executed were: Obidiozor Duru, Chidi Onuoha and Amanze Onuoha (brothers); Collins Ndulaka, Sydney Onyechege and Mac Donald Ebere. Former Military Governor of Imo State, Colonel Tanko Zubairu (rtd), quickly signed their death warrants in an effort to rid the state of the rising cases of suspected ritual killings.

In the latest case, police sources said the wife of the suspect, Charity, has already made a statement at the Ahiazu Police Station and that the suspect, a motor mechanic, is now being detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Owerri, the state capital.

An eyewitness account narrated that Anyanwu had told the wife that he wanted their only son, aged 13, to accompany him to the nkporo (local name for the village’s forest) near a river to fetch some woods for the repair of their dilapidated building.

But the suspect later returned from the forest allegedly carrying a cellophane bag containing human flesh with blood dripping down.

Confronted by an insane man on arrival to the village, the suspect was said to have rebuffed the insane man and proceeded home where, with the combined efforts of the insane man and another drunkard, the villagers were alerted .

The suspect was said to have overpowered those that initially came to arrest him on discovery of what the two men were raising alarm for. He was however arrested on Thursday, 24 hours after the incident by the police and Akabor vigilante group.

A native of the town who sought anonymity said Anyanwu once suffered from insanity and that a similar incident occurred in the same family two years ago .

Meanwhile, a middle aged man was electrocuted at Umuebejileme Obohia also in Ahiazu LGA as he attempted to allegedly illegally connect electricity in the house of his relation in the same village.

Business Manager of PHCN, Jude Oguadinma, lamented that people of the area often connect electricity to their homes without involving PHCH officials, adding that the company has lost a lot of revenue through the heinous act.

Golden Girl Susan Oluwabimpe Harvey is the real name of Nigeria's reigning pop queen, Goldie. The Business Management graduate who is now a musician hails from Ekiti State and in this interview with, she speaks about her life, growing up, her interest in music, among other issues.

Tell us about yourself.

I'm the first born of my parents. I hail from Ikole, in Ekiti State; I attended Green-springs Montessori Primary School, Saint Johns College and then went on to get a degree in Business Management at the University of Sunderland, United kingdom.

How did it all start, your journey into music?

I came from a very religious family; my parents are very strict and academic. Though, I was a member of the junior church choir when I was younger, I was never encouraged to take it to a professional level.

I always knew I had a flair for the arts though, even at a very tender age; I was always part of the cultural dance groups in school and stuffs like that. Music for me started in Nigeria not by chance but by God's design, who ordains all things. I released my first video "Komole" in March/April 2007.

How rewarding is the business and what are you doing against your works being pirated?

It is quite rewarding, I thank God for every penny I make, no matter how small and pray that it gets more rewarding, as time goes by. The fight against piracy is not and cannot be a solo effort, it would take my fellow artistes, industry bigwigs, and the government to help combat this problem. Right now, I leave it in the hands of my record label, KennisMusic, to deal with it on a small scale as they deem fit.

What other business do you do?

Music is a 24/7 business for me, I have little time to focus on anything else.

What was your parent's reaction when you decided to go into music and who are your role models in the industry and the artistes you wish to feature in your album?

My parents were like, you can do whatever, but please make sure you go to school and get a degree, so that, not only will you be showing your younger ones good example, you'll also have something to fall back on in terms of getting a job if the music doesn't work out. My dad still has problems with my music, but, its not as bad as when I first started out though.

My mum is my role model, hardworking, highly intelligent, kind, generous and very loving. I really don't have any artiste in particular I'd like to feature, I'll record with any artiste that is in the same frame of mind with me, especially to add value, so to speak.

How many albums have you now? When is your next album coming out?

I have no albums for now. I released a limited edition (CD) compilation late 2007, but it wasn't a full album released for commercial purposes. I'm working on a commercial album now, scheduled for release later this year, hopefully before October, God's willing. I'm going to be expressing myself more in this album, talking about my personal perception of inter-human relations as I see it. I already have tracks with ElDee the Don, Ruggedman, Magnito, Banky W, to name a few.

How will you rate your music in Nigeria, what is the acceptance level?

Oh! So far, so good, I thank God. In the beginning, it was like I was hitting my head against a brickwall, an unyielding mind-boggling surface. Now though, people have come to accept me, my style and my sound. Its great and I feel good about the development.

How has your chosen profession lifted your life?

I've never been proud or snobbish. As a public figure, I owe it a duty to my fans to be polite and sweet even on my "off" days. And oh yes, I've performed in a couple of places in the UK. I learned new things everyday; by and large, I think my fame has made me more of a people-oriented person, I think, where I was more introverted before.

You are no doubt beautiful and I'm sure men will run after you. How do you curtail the rush, the passes? Are you engaged?

I'm flattered if you consider me beautiful. I think I just clean up well. As per the men, I really don't go out much apart from social or entertainment events and I don't get hassled. I literarily don't. Sometimes, I even wonder if there's something wrong with me and I keep asking myself "why don't men toast me sef? na wa o! " As per when I'm going to the altar, don't worry, everything will reveal itself in time, you will surely be in the know when the time comes.

If you see a guy you are fascinated with, can you make a pass at him?

Is it wrong or abnormal for a lady to make a pass at a man? Ah! That's my job oh! I make passes all the time. Yes! I'm a shameless flirt! Its embarrassing, I know, but I can't help it. Making a pass at a man is like going to the market and seeing a dress you like! If you walk by without pricing it, you'll go home and feel bad the rest of the day. You'll never know if it would have been your size, if it would have been available, etc. But if you make a pass and he doesn't accept (meaning the dress wasn't your size or it was too costly), then at least you'll know you've tried and it wasn't meant to be. In my opinion, I see nothing wrong in a woman making a pass at a man. Anybody that says otherwise is old school. Come on, either of the sexes can make the pass.

What dictates your fashion sense, how do you get your clothing because you dress like the Madonnas, Mary J Bliges etc, why?

I think Zizi Cardow isn't doing a bad job. I believe everybody should wear what they are comfortable in. If you like ankara, adire or lace, feel free to wear what looks good on you and what you feel comfortable in.

In my case, I dislike patterns! Too many colours and patterns on a fabric give me headache. My mood and the occasion of course dictate my dressing. Yes I like leather; simple, shiny and strong.

I also feel my stay in the United Kingdom influences my fashion sense; coupled with the fact that when I was growing up, my parents always got us ready-made clothes. I don't remember ever having any native clothes as a child.

A lot of my dresses are Karen Milan dresses. Leather wears. You will find shoes from four to six inches high heel shoes. I prefer wearing shorts. When I wear shorts, I am extremely comfortable. I can do anything in shorts, you feel very free. Naturally, I love shorts because I could go to the market, to the movies or clubbing in shorts but in dresses, one is really restricted. You cannot really be playful and I like being playful, you know jumping around. I love lace underwear, they are sexy. I love perfumes and clothes a lot.

You expose your beautiful body a lot. What is your impression of boobs' exposure, bum and thighs?

My personal opinion is this, if you got it, then flaunt it. If I think I have it, I do flaunt it, but there are some days I think I don't have it, so I won't flaunt. I like to be sexy, comfortable and trendy. To ladies out there, watch your body shape before you follow a trend because it is not everything that you put on that would look good on you.

What is your general perception of the entertainment industry in Nigeria? Do you see known names as a threat?

I don't perceive anyone as a threat, because everybody is different. Fingers are not the same. If anybody sees me as a threat, I wouldn't know about it, nor would I care. I don't like dwelling on negativity; it disrupts my aura. The industry is improving rapidly and that's a plus.

What edge do you have over the known names, I mean what stands you out?

I'm unique I think, my music is different; I dress differently, I also reason differently. Yes, its obvious that my uniqueness stands me out.

Is there any international artiste you admire and wish to feature in you album in future?

Hmmm... I've always loved Ludacris. If God wishes, why not?

Where does Goldie wish to be in the next five years?

To have achieved all God has lined up in store for me, and also to help as many people as I can; within my capability..

What is your favourite food? Colour? Car?

I can eat French fries and peppered snail anyday anytime. I love black, creams, purples, greens, I like down to earth people; this applies to both sexes. I've always been a Mercedes cars lover. I think I'll name my first daughter Mercedes.

Can you remember any embarrassing moment?

I have so many embarrassing moments, day in day out, it's a struggle to keep up with everything. I've had wardrobe malfunctions, where I've unintentionally revealed some parts of my body in public. I sometimes forget what I'm about to say at public functions/meetings. I'm in a roll and all of a sudden, zap! My brain freezes, it can really be embarrassing, you know? It happens to me atimes.

What can you not be found doing?

Goldie can never be found fighting, quarrelling, or raising my voice in public. I made a vow to myself never to degenerate to the level of an animal in public or otherwise. Nothing is solved using violence.

1. All Black Men Are Well-Endowed

This one is bound to start some discussion. Upon googling ‘Black men big penis true?’, you’ll find a range of references to an unemployed white man from Brooklyn named John Falcon, who’s apparently the owner of
the world’s largest.I am also certain they have not seen some folks from up north here in naija .

Research however will tell you that there is in fact no truth to the debate about differences in size across the races. It is certainly not a guarantee that the next black man you meet will outdo John Falcon in
the size department but in terms of a continued discussion about this
myth, we’ll leave it with you.

2. They Don’t Like To Work

While Black men suffer from some of the highest rates of unemployment in America, psychologists will confirm that this is in no way related to choice. Men in general are hardwired to want to provide for their
families and so will pursue any means possible to achieve that goal.
‘Not wanting to work’ is a negative stereotype of black men that is
certainly not true in the grand majority of cases of unemployment.I am certain this applies to Black men in leadership positions especially Politicians

3. Black Men Are Extremely Sexually Virile

Can we keep this one as it is? What do you think? Very Very Virile Ask the President of South Africa,Senate President of Naija, and a certain OBJ to name a few .then calculate the amount of prostitutes in Port Harcourt,Abuja and Ondo then we are talking about some crazy numbers here .

4. Black Men Are Great Athletes

Any major sporting event features an array of muscular, testosterone-filled black men. But, ‘Look at them! Now look at your man! And back to them! Now look at your man!’ Great Athletes but some are quite stupid for example Look At Kaita .Kai !

5. Players

Popular urban culture and Hollywood have perpetuated the myth of the black man as a player. This is in fact not true of black men in particular. All human beings must actively resist polygamy in their
lives because of the pressures of evolution, which tell us to procreate
with as many people as possible, and society, which dictates that we
remain faithful to our chosen partner. deep within a black man is a True player player womaniser .

6. Black Men Like White Women

Now this one depends largely on who you ask. Interracial marriage is on the rise in America and the perception that black men like white women may stem from the fact that it is becoming more socially
acceptable and therefore more common. In the end, a man and a woman will
be together for reasons of personal compatibility, not race. Most Male Africans resident in Europe are married to White women period ....

7. Black Men Don’t Take Care Of Their Children

A good black man will be a wonderful father to his children no matter what the circumstances. The trick is to avoid those who might take the easy way out of hard circumstances – of these there are plenty and
they’re all shapes, sizes and colors. maybe we should ask the Uhrobo & yoruba man this question once again

8. He’s Been In Jail

This stereotype is like a bad joke gone worse. Urban and pop cultures have played on this perception to the point that those who unfamiliar with black people maintain some crazy ideas about our world.

9. Good At Dancing

The only reason people become known for dancing well is that one good mover can overshadow the 5 others who just escaped through the fire exit to avoid being pulled onto the dance floor.

We want to hear from you. What do you think about the validity of some of these stereotypes?

And please let us forgive Sani Kaita

2011: Politicians invade banks for loans *Jonathan's men plot campaign strategies *Hold meetings in Abuja, Kaduna, Asaba *Pressure mounts on president to declare interest

IN preparation for the 2011 elections, politicians have now invaded banks for credit facilities in various banks to actualise their ambitions, Nigerian Tribune has gathered.

The development, it was gathered, may not be unconnected with the Central Bank of Nigeria's (CBN's) directives on credit facilities to politicians.

A top bank executive, who pleaded anonymity, told the Nigerian Tribune at the weekend that CBN directing banks to resume lending to politicians was unfortunate.

According to him, politicians are well known not to keep promises, stating that the current directive can lead to another era of non-performing loans in the sector.

In his contribution, a financial analyst and Chief Operating Officer, Twinsronk Consulting, Mr. Okechukwu Amadi, said for the apex bank to have reversed itself was highly regrettable.

He observed that though there were stringent conditions for accessing credit facilities in the various banks, the politicians would always want to circumvent such rules..

He submitted that though the apex bank had no right to bar banks from issuing credits to any group of people, it must ensure the conditions were strictly followed.

"The fact is that the CBN cannot debar banks from lending to a set of people. What they should do is to ensure politicians meet the stipulated conditions or else the proposed AMC meant to take care of bad debts in the financial system will be of no effect," he warned.

As a result, confusion has enveloped the banking industry following CBN's current directive to banks to resume lending to politicians.

Investigations by Nigerian Tribune revealed that the apex bank had initially instructed banks to be wary of politicians thronging various banks for credit facilities in preparation for 2011 elections, stressing that they were capable of throwing the sector back to crisis.

It was in view of this that the apex bank earlier threatened to sanction banks that failed to comply with its directive on the use of credit information from credit bureaus before granting any loans.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that following sustained pressure mounted on the CBN governor, Mallam Lamido Sanusi, especially in the light of the recent political developments in the country, the apex bank had to retrace its steps by issuing directive to banks to start lending to politicians, denying that it ever instructed banks not to lend to them.

Only last week, the CBN, in a statement signed by its Head, Corporate Affairs, Mr. Mohammed Abdullahi, entitled 'No Directive To Banks Against Lending To Politically Exposed Persons', stated that it had never directed Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) to stop granting credit facilities to PEPs, stressing that such would amount to the CBN meddling in the internal credit administration processes and procedures of banks.

According to the apex bank, "For the avoidance of doubt, banks and Other Financial Institutions (OFIs) are at liberty to grant credit facilities to any individual and/or a corporate entity in line with the institution's Credit Policy and in consonance with extant rules and regulations."

In a circular to banks and financial institutions signed by the Director, Banking Supervision, Mr. Samuel Oni, which was earlier sent to banks, the CBN pointed out that "In its effort to provide a platform for financial institutions to strengthen their credit appraisal procedures with a view to enhancing credit quality and responsive credit behaviour in the nation's financial system, the CBN recently licensed three private credit bureaux to provide credit history on borrowers.

"Following the release of the Guidelines on Licensing, Operations and Regulations of Credit Bureau issued by CBN in October 2008, it has become imperative to issue this circular directing bank and other financial institutions to partner with the licensed credit bureaux in order to enhance the performance of their operations."

Consequently, the apex bank said it was now mandatory for banks and other financial institutions under the purview of the CBN to comply with sections 5.4.3 and 5.4.5 of the Guidelines on Licensing, Operations and Regulations of Credit Bureaus in Nigeria as follows: Have data exchange agreement with at least two credit bureaus; obtain credit report from at least two credit bureaus before granting any facility to their customers; and obtain quarterly credit report from at least two credit bureaus for all previous loans/facilities granted to enable the determination of the borrowers current exposure to the financial system, adding that banks and other financial institutions were advised to comply with this circular with immediate effect as failure to do so would attract appropriate sanctions.

Meanwhile, supporters of President Goodluck Jonathan have set machinery in motion to ensure his entry into the 2011 presidential contest ahead of the next national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Till now, the president had not formally indicated his interest in the 2011 presidential election, just as some people have advised him not to run.

Indications that more forces are rooting for Jonathan emerged at the weekend, with a series of meetings holding in Abuja, Kaduna and Asaba, Delta State, by Jonathan's supporters who attempted to preview the 2011 elections with the possibility of drafting him into the presidential race.

Two of such meetings which took place at Sheraton and Bolingo hotels, the Nigerian Tribune learnt, considered all options available to Jonathan on the 2011 polls, with a resolve to conduct an independent survey to ascertain the level of his acceptability across the geo-political zones of the federation.

A senator was said to be coordinating the Kaduna caucus, most of who were said to be working on the PDP structures to make them to accommodate the desire of Jonathan to contest the presidential election.

A member of the caucus, Mallam Umar Farouk, told the Nigerian Tribune that Jonathan might not have much trouble in convincing the North about wanting to win a full four-year term, as the people from the region were already familiar with him.

He said the recent remarks by some Northern elite urging Jonathan to contest were a reflection of grass roots politicians from the region, who believe that Jonathan could make them feel more of government presence which they lacked when the late President Umaru Yar'Adua was in the saddle.

Also, Jonathan's supporters in Delta State had been perfecting strategies on how to raise the ante for his interest in the next presidential election, having mapped out a series of sensitisation events for the purpose.

The group, known as Goodluck Jonathan Support Group, had scheduled a book launch as the first in the series of events planned to prepare the ground for the president to enter the contest and had also planned a rally to be held in Asaba and Port Harcourt for same purpose before the end of July.

The national coordinator of the group, Honour-able Aneke Ifemeni, told the Nigerian Tribune that members of his group had written a book comprising 101 reasons they felt should propel Jonathan to contest in 2011.

Aneke said the group had supported the late President Yar'Adua for second term, adding that his death did not mean governance had changed.

He said since he had paired with Jonathan for his presidency, it would be incumbent on Nigerians to allow the administration to remain in order to continue with the programmes it had inaugurated for the sustenance of rule of law and democracy in the country.

"Government is a continuum and our belief is that if Jonathan who started the programme with Yar'Adua is allowed to remain in power, he would have the right frame of mind to pilot government's affairs in line with the goals set by the late Yar'Adua," he said.

However, plots by some aspirants and their supporters for the post of the national chairman of the PDP notwithstanding, President Jonathan is said to have kept all stakeholders guessing on his clear direction on the decision.

It was gathered in Abuja, at the weekend, that the president had refused to open up to any of the contending groups on the matter.

A number of projections are coming up in the process of the emergence of the new PDP chairman.

While the South-East believed that it should be allowed to produce a replacement for Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, some forces were already angling for the emergence of the new chairman from the North, in line with the reversed zoning arrangement.

The belief in the South-East was that whoever was appointed would complete Ogbulafor's tenure, which should lapse in 2012, but a fresh thinking was indicating that the new chairman should still emerge on the basis of the existing zoning arrangement, which would see the post retained in the South-East.

Sources in the administration said President Jonathan had not opened up to any of the contending forces on the choice of the new chairman.

While some sources said the president was behind the push to install the former national secretary of the party, Chief Benard Eze, as the new chairman, others indicated that the president's camp was in favour of Chief Okwe-zelezie Nwodo.

Other sources close to the government said Jonathan was considering the Senior Special Assistant on Political Affairs, Senator Polycarp Nwite, as a way of pacifying the camp the late President Yar'Adua.

Nwite was the Nigerian Ambassador to Botswana before he was recalled by Yar'Adua and appointed political adviser.

He is regarded as one of the core supporters of the late General Shehu Musa Yar'Adua, founder of the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM).

It was gathered that the intervention of former President Olusegun Obasanjo in the selection process had not forced Jonathan to change

his posture and the president had not confirmed a particular choice to any of the stakeholders.

"The president is bidding his time on the choice of the national chairman of the PDP. He wants the best for the party and I won't be surprised if any of those so-called frontline candidates loses out," a source said.

Chief Obasanjo was said to be backing a former Nigerian Ambassador to Togo, Ambassador Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi, for the top job, while some people had also linked him with the support for the former national vice chairman of the party in the South-East, Chief Nze Ozichukwu Chukwu.

The PDP Governors' Forum and some members of the PDP Reform Group were said to be backing the former Senate President, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, while other forces were said to be queuing behind the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, General Ike Nwachukwu.

But a source said of Jonathan's thinking: "the president is keeping issues around the new chairman close to his chest. So far, we can say that he has kept the stakeholders guessing. He wants all the segments of the party to come up with suggestions before he gives the final nod."

Meanwhile, the National Interest Group (NIG) in the Senate is set to contribute a voice to the ongoing debate on the choice of the new PDP chairman.

It was gathered that the group had scheduled a meeting for Tuesday in Abuja to finalise talks on the preferred choice of candidate for the PDP top job.

The group, which spearheaded the confirmation of Jonathan as acting president in February, had continue to bond together since its formation in January. The NIG is closely working with the House of Representatives version, the Nigeria First Forum (NFF).

Sources said the two groups were working towards presenting a common candidate for the post of the national chairman of the party.

C' River: Female teacher, 10 men detained in one cell …Petitions Army Command over illegal detention, torture
From JUDEX OKORO, Calabar
.
A female school teacher, Mrs. Etta- Bassey Ephraim, was made to pass through the valley of death as she was detained in a military cell for eight hours with 10 men. Some of the men, she said, displayed signs of lunacy and violence, sending shivers down her spine.

Narrating her ordeals to Daily Sun, Mrs. Ephraim, a History at Army Day Secondary School, Ikot Ansa, Calabar, Cross River State, stated that she was so terribly frightened and depressed that the male inmates could rape her at any slightest opportunity.

She said, “ I was shocked to the bone marrow when I was put in the same cell with these hefty men; I asked myself what offence did I commit to warrant such torture, human debasement and treatment from the Commanding Officer whose duty it is to ensure my protection in the barracks. But thank God that after eight gory hours, my husband and my principal were able to effect my release from the gallows,” adding, the experience has worsened my health condition because it was the biggest nightmare I have ever had in my life.”

In a petition, entitled, “Petition against the Commanding Officer, 146, Battalion, Eburutu Barracks, Calabar, for an illegal detention in military guardroom,” and addressed to the General Officer Commanding 82, Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, Cross River State House of Assembly and Commissioner for education, the petitioner stated that since she joined the secondary education board and command school for over 14-years now, she had never had any case of indiscipline or problem whatsoever in the various schools served and, therefore, wondered why she could be subjected to such a treatment.

Mrs. Ephraim, who described her detention as illegal confinement and breach of fundamental human rights by the military authorities, is demanding an unreserved apology and that the Commander of 146, Battalion, Eburutu barracks, Calabar, Lt.Col.K.N. Garuba, be cautioned for an alleged misbehaviour and inhuman treatment meted out to her for no just cause.

According to her, the incident that led to her detention was as a result of her trying to intervene in a matter between one of her colleagues, Mrs. Theresa Egrinya, and the Commanding Officer, Lt.Col. Garuba, on Saturday, March 2, 2010 at about 10:45 am in the school compound. Explaining further, she said, “We were in school with some of my colleagues for a re-scheduled examination for students. After the examination, we were outside the school, discussing the Army Day African Cup of Nations, a football tournament of the school when a motorbike pulled up in front of us.”

Looking agitated, the rider started shouting at one of the teachers, Mrs. Theresa Egrinya, saying, “madam you sent your son to knock me down, pack out of my barracks, I own this barracks.” On hearing this, she claimed, the madam fell on her knees and pleaded for mercy and in the process the school principal joined in pleading for leniency, an action which further infuriated the officer.

“Not yet satisfied, the army officer went ahead to order me out of the barracks for daring to interfere in the matter. And before I could get my things out of my office, he ordered one of the soldiers on guard to escort me to pack my things and lock me up in the guardroom.

In an emotion laden tone, she therefore, called on the relevant military authorities and the Cross River House of Assembly to intervene in the matter and caution Garuba against such action.

Armed men invade labour ward

Activities at the State Specialist Hospital, Benin City have been temporarily paralysed as a result of incessant armed robbery attacks on the hospital, NEXT has gathered.

Some wards in the hospital have been visited on several occasions by armed robbers, who unleash terror on the patients and medical workers on duty..

The children ward has been a particularly regular target of the armed men.

The latest attack, carried out at the weekend, was directed at the maternity ward and labour room.

Sources say the suspected armed robbers, numbering about 10, broke into the maternity ward through a back door at about 1.20am and conducted a bed to bed search for cash and handsets from those on admission.

Not satisfied with their loot, the armed men allegedly headed to the labour room where some women were said to be in labour. They did not spare them either.

A witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the women scampered for safety; with some reportedly taking refuge in the toilet while others ran out of the room naked.

Having had a field day, the armed bandits repeated their visit to the same ward the following night unchallenged - and they successfully operated and disposed their victims of money, handsets and other valuables.

At present, the hospital runs skeletal service. Its night shift has been put on hold for fear of a repeat of the ugly incident.

Fear of rape

A nurse, who also did not want her name in print, expressed fear of her colleagues that the evil men might one day descend on them and rape them.

The State Commissioner for Health, Moses Momoh, speaking during a telephone interview, described the incident as condemnable and capable of worsening the health conditions of the patients.

He however ascribed the poor security at the hospital to the road construction along the hospital gate which, he said, makes policing of the gate difficult.

He, however, said the Director of Hospital Services have been directed to get police protection for the premises.

Phone calls to the public relations officer of the state police command, Peter Ogboi, were not picked.

SSS quizzes ex-NNPC boss, Barkindo * Seizes passports of Yar'Adua's men *FG restricts movement of ex-ministers *Aondoakaa delayed at airport

FACTS emerging in Abuja indicated that security agencies have opened up investigations into activities of the immediate past Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Mohammed Barkindo..

advertisement

Sources said that he was being probed on the orders from above over alleged misdemeanour while in office.

It was gathered that operatives of the State Security Services (SSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) were involved in the ongoing probe and that the former NNPC boss was questioned by some officials of the SSS in Abuja last week.

It was learnt that the former NNPC boss was being investigated over alleged anti-government activities, especially the purchase of some high calibre equipment which were not covered under the budget of his corporation.

It was gathered that the NNPC boss was fingered as one of the alleged sponsors of the widely discussed cabal around ailing President Umaru Yar'Adua.

Sources said that the organisations had been investigating some officials and their link with the importation of certain equipment in the build-up to the surreptitious return of ailing President Yar'Adua to Nigeria.

Some life support machines were brought into the country through the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja and the Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano without inspection by men of Customs.

Investigations had linked some top Nigerians and a retired general to the importation but details were still being pieced together when Barkindo was sacked.

A source said that Barkindo had appeared before a team of SSS operatives to answer questions on certain issues last week.

It was also learnt that the ex-NNPC boss was also being investigated over certain issues relating to the oil industry.

For instance, a source said that the agencies wanted to know whether there was a deliberate sabotage by some forces at NNPC, as it took a threat from the former minister before sanity returned to the oil supply chain

Said the source: "We have it on good authority that security operatives are looking for details relating to the sources of funding for the shipment of certain security equipment. It is necessary to get to the root of some of these things for the sake of the nation's future."

There were reports that the shipment of a particular equipment through Aminu Kano International Airport led to a row within the Customs because the equipment was said to have been moved into the country without due inspection by men of the Customs.

Sources said that the said equipment was allowed to enter Nigeria through Aminu Kano Airport, though the owners refused to disclose what was in the container and that a retired general had to intervene to ensure passage.

It was also learnt that the international passports of members of the cabal, who are already being investigated by the security operatives, had been seized by the government.

A source said that the passports of close presidential aides, who are regarded as members of the kitchen cabinet or the cabal around Yar'Adua, had been being seized by the security agents.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has restricted the movement of all former ministers, as well as those currently serving in the cabinet, for close monitoring.

It was gathered that the order was said to have been forwarded to security officials at all airports and borders so as to prevent those who were still being investigated from travelling outside the country.

It was also learnt on Sunday that the former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mr Mike Aondoakaa, became the first victim of the directive, when his protocol officer was barred from checking in his luggage for a trip to Rome at the Abuja airport.

It was gathered that Aondoakaa's aide had gone to the airport to check in his luggage for a trip to attend a programme of the United Nations.

A source confirmed that the aide was told he could not check in the luggage as he could not produce a clearance from the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) for the purpose.

One source close to the ex-minister said the former Attorney-General got in touch with the office of the NSA, where he was fully briefed of the new directive.

According to sources, Aondoakaa was told that no former minister was allowed to travel out of the country without a clearance from the NSA.

He was also told that the directive did not exclude serving ministers and that what he needed to do was to apply to the office of the NSA for clearance.

A source said Aondoakaa immediately applied and his clearance was released on Sunday evening.

A source said the former minister informed the NSA that he was due for a meeting at the UN Informational Institute for the Unification of Private Law and he was representing both Nigeria and the African Union (AU).

It was gathered that the directive to security agencies was in line with the decision to probe the activities of all former ministers and while some of those people with critical cases would have their passports seized, those who were only under investigation would be required to secure clearance from the NSA whose office would confirm the status of the affected minister and either approve the trip or refuse clearance as appropriate.

When 33 strip dancers were arrested in Lagos recently and their half-nude pictures splashed on the pages of an evening newspaper, not a few people condemned the dancers and the operators of the night club in which they operated.

Agatha

advertisement

But many people seemed to have failed to reckon that the business could not have thriven without patronage from members of the public, or that many of the dancers were forced into the trade by circumstances.

For instance 17-year-old Agatha found herself in prostitution as a result of circumstances beyond her control and she is now full of regrets for the unseemly experience. ''My father had three wives and my mum had three daughters for him. I am the last of the three girls,'' said the Enugu State born girl. ''I lived with my maternal grandmother. Sometime in March last year, I was on my way to my father's house when I was accosted by a lady from my village. She asked me why I wasn't in school.''

The lady, called Mama Ify, lived a distance away from Agatha's father. Believing that Mama Ify was genuinely concerned about her welfare, Agatha explained that she had to stop going to school for lack of funds. ''I didn't go back to school after my JSS III exams because my father had no money. When I said so, she told me she had a sister in Ibadan who sold provisions, and the sister was in need of a sales girl.''

Agatha was overjoyed at the opportunity to escape her life of poverty. After all, there was nothing left for her back at the village except a life of penury and obscurity. ''I couldn't tell my father anything. I knew he would object to my leaving the village, more so when I had to go with someone he didn't know. I just made up my mind that I would leave without telling them.''

On the morning of March 25, 2009, left for Ibadan. ''My grandmother was at home on that day. She asked me where I was going with my clothes, and I told her I was leaving without any plan to come back. She pleaded with me to stay back but I refused.'' Agatha went to meet her new found benefactor at home, anxious to begin a new life. ''Mama Ify told me to go down to the expressway and wait for her there. She said she would join me after a few minutes.''

The motive, of course, was that Agatha's disappearance would never be traced to her. But if Agatha noticed the implication, she certainly wasn't cautious. Leaving the village was uppermost in her mind. ''We boarded a bus to Enugu Park. From there, we took another bus to Onitsha. It was at Onitsha that we took a luxury bus to Ijebu Ode.''

All through the journey, Agatha harboured no fear. For some reason, she implicitly trusted Mama Ify's intentions. ''I asked Mama Ify for her number just in case her sister misbehaved and I wanted to return to my village. She obliged me and confided that her daughter was ill and badly in need of a surgical operation. She said she was actually going to get some money from her sister and decided to get her a sales girl in return.

"When we got to Ijebu Ode, Mama Ify called her sister to tell her that we were around. They arranged to meet us. We took another bus and stopped under a bridge.''

It was at that location that Mama ify's sister came to meet them in company with a man in his forties. Agatha's new guardian was introduced as Madam Best. She was to learn later that her male companion was called Akin, Madam Best's boyfriend. Almost as soon as introductions were over, Mama Ify excused herself, claiming she had to travel back to the village immediately, because her sick daughter needed her. ''She assured me I was in safe hands and to call her if anything went wrong,'' Agatha said.

Agatha parted ways with Mama Ify unaware that the money supposedly borrowed from Madam Best was in fact payment for slave labour. ''I took a bike with my new boss while Mama Ify boarded a bus back to Enugu. At a point, we stopped, took a bus and alighted at one filling station in Ibadan. I couldn't really say exactly where we were because that was my first time of travelling to Ibadan," she said.

The trio walked a short distance to a hotel that was being renovated. The hotel was in a bushy area. It was quite isolated. ''Madam Best and her male companion asked me what I wanted for lunch. I told them I wasn't hungry. They later went away to get a room.''

Minutes later, Agatha was ushered into what would be her new home. ''They called me into a room and said I would live there. I was so surprised. I asked Madam Best if she herself lived in the hotel.''

It was at that point that Agatha learnt the ugly truth. ''She (Madam Best) asked me if Mama Ify didn't tell me what I would be doing in Ibadan. I told her she said I would work as a sales girl in Madam Best's provision store. It was then Madam Best told me I was in Ibadan to work as a prostitute.''

Terrified, Agatha broke down in tears and pleaded with her captors to call Mama Ify on the phone. Her request was declined and instead, she was told to repay the money that was used in transporting her from Enugu to Ibadan. ''When I kept crying, Akin threatened to kill me with a knife. I was locked up for three days. I was given neither food nor drink. Madam best said if I so much wanted to eat, I should sell my body and feed myself.'' On March 28, 2009, desperate for food, the terrified teenager gave in to her captors' demand. Even at that, she had to be beaten with a shoe into final submission. ''I had to sleep with about six or seven men every day. I was never paid anything. All the men paid the money to Madam Best. I was only fed thrice daily.'' With the increasing scourge of HIV sweeping across society, one wonders if Agatha had not contacted any STD. Fortunately, she was able to allay fears on that matter. "All the men that slept with me used protection." Agatha continued in her despised profession for about a month and a half. She couldn't leave her room, so she remained a prisoner there. None of her male patrons ever saw in her the reluctant and terrified child yearning for freedom. She was simply a thing of entertainment.

It wasn't until May 23, 2009 that respite finally came from the most unlikely person. ''There was a boy called Saidi who played music at the hotel every Sunday. One day, he came in with his friend Wale, who demanded for me. When we were alone in my room, I started crying.''

It was the 23-year-old man who eventually offered Agatha a ray of hope. ''He asked me what the problem was and I told him everything. He was really sympathetic and promised to help. He left and came back with a trouser and a top.'' The young man went further to speak with the hotel manager, Alashe. ''Wale told Alashe that he would be spending the night with me.''

Alashe threatened to harm Wale if Agatha should disappear overnight. Perhaps the unscrupulous businessman had smelt a rat. Recalling that eventful night, Agatha said, ''We both couldn't sleep that night. I was very scared, even Wale was scared too. Later, I dozed off. At about 3am, Wale woke me up. He said he had to start going.''

Luckily for both of them, no one stirred while they made good their escape. There was even no fence; just the eeriness of the surrounding bushes. ''We ran until we came to a music studio close to the road and waited there till 5 am. We flagged down the first bike that came our way. The bike took us to Ekiti bus stop. From there, we took a bus to lloro, Ekiti State. It was around 12 mid day when we got there.''

To avoid being tracked by Alashe, Wale took Agatha to his father's house instead of going straight to his brother's home where he normally lived. On their way, they stopped by a stream so Agatha could wash her clothes. ''I had just finished with my washing when Wale's sister- in -law came to inform us that Saidi was with a friend at Wale's brother's house. Both men had come from Ibadan.'' Understandably, Wale was scared to go back. And even when Agatha urged him to do so, he refused. While they were still debating the issue, Wale's brother sent another person to call them. ''I told Wale that I wasn't scared. Since I was no more in that hotel, I knew I could confront whoever it was that had come for me. I was finally able to convince Wale that we should go back.''

They discovered on their arrival that it was Akin that had been sent to bring back Agatha to Ibadan. ''They quarreled for a while in Yoruba. I didn't understand a word of what they were saying. When they had reached an agreement, Akin told everyone that had gathered that I was his sister and Madam Best my mother. He told them Wale had taken me without permission from my mother.''

Seeing her chance at freedom fleeing before her very eyes, Agatha wept profusely, denying Akin's claims. Unfortunately, instead of investigating the matter further, those gathered urged Agatha to go back home with Akin. ''They were all telling me to go back to Ibadan and settle with Akin, that I could come back to lloro after I had done that.'' All this while, Wale did not say a word. He had been sufficiently threatened by Akin.

At this point, Agatha made up her mind to frustrate Akin. ''I decided I wasn't going to make it easy for him to ruin me. When we got to the bus stop, Akin negotiated the price while Wale looked on. When I saw Akin was distracted, I ran. Akin ran after me and caught me. He warned me not to attempt an escape.'' No onlooker bothered to question Agatha on why she tried to run away from Akin. ''Akin got another bus and started haggling afresh. When his eyes were not on me, I ran again. This time, I ran across the street straight into a provision store.''

Agatha held on to the lady store keeper, begging her for help. ''The woman was alarmed and by the time Akin ran into the store, she was terrified." The lady fled her store with Agatha holding on to her for dear life. The struggle continued until the storekeeper's husband stopped them all. ''When he started questioning us all, I burst into tears. Akin quickly intervened and gave his already prepared story of me being his sister. He said all this in Yoruba.'' Fortunately for Agatha, the storekeeper's husband took more than a passing interest in the whole drama. ''He asked me what the problem was and I told him everything. Luckily for me, he was also from Enugu State.''

They were invited back into the store, presumably to settle the matter but unknown to them the police had been notified. ''Two men came in some minutes later and asked us all to explain ourselves. When I finished my tale, they mentioned trafficking and held on to Akin. It was at that point I realised they were policemen.''

They were all taken to Iloro police station. The police tried to mediate in the matter but the store keeper's husband was adamant that Akin and his accomplices be prosecuted. On June 1, 2009, they were moved to the state CID in Ekiti State. ''We spent 10 days there. After our first week there, the police raided the hotel where I used to live. All the girls were taken away. Madam Best usually stayed at Queen's Rema Hotel but I couldn't direct the police there. I only knew the name. It was an Okada operator that directed us there. The police had to check each hotel on that street one after the other because I couldn't identify the particular one.''

As it turned out, Madam Best was not around, so the hotel owner's wife was arrested. ''We couldn't get the owner of the hotel. He was called Alhaji. The police told his boys that if Alhaji wanted his wife out of police custody, he should aid them in tracking down Madam Best. '' Madam Best was caught on the day she tried to flee the town to Benin, Edo state.

Head of the Lagos Zonal office of NAPTIP Godwin Morka said the matter was in court and efforts were being made to reunite Agatha with her family through the NAPTIP zonal office in the East. ''It was the Ekiti state CID that brought Agatha to NAPTIP. She was very much traumatised when she was handed over to us. We had to put her through counselling and some medical treatments.

"Parents have to be more careful and watchful of their children. Young girls can be so easily deceived and recruited into prostitution, especially when they are not highly enlightened

US, UK, EU place visa ban on Yar'Adua's men *President's aides' names compiled by global anti-money laundering body *UK envoy, Jonathan in strategic closed door meeting
Written by Taiwo Adisa
Monday, March 1, 2010

TOP officials of Western powers, including the United States of America (USA), United Kingdom, (UK), Canada and the European Union (EU), have given clear indications to the Nigerian government that they are placing visa restrictions on aides of ailing President Umaru Yar'Adua, who are believed to be

orchestrating political confusion that could endanger Nigeria's democracy.

In separate representations to Acting President Goodluck Jonathan in the last one week, sources confirmed that the Western authorities have also compiled names of such "trouble makers" in the country and forwarded same to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the global anti-money laundering body, for the investigation of their alleged stupendous wealth.

Sources close to the administration confirmed to the Nigerian Tribune that while some of the Western governments made representation to the Nigerian authorities through their ambassadors in Nigeria, others actually sent special envoys.

It was gathered that a special envoy of the UK government actually met with the acting president behind closed doors on Saturday.

A source said that the delegation also included the UK Ambassador in Nigeria, Mr Bob Dewar, who led the team with a special message to the acting president.

Though the meeting was held behind closed doors, a source close to the government said that the discussions centred on how to stabilise the Nigerian democracy.

It was gathered that the UK government had, on its own, identified those described as 'trouble makers' in Nigeria, who are regarded as orchestrating political confusion in the country.

The acting president was told that, henceforth, such persons would be placed under scrutiny in the UK and that their names were being forwarded to the FATF.

It was gathered that while some of those involved have only earned salaries all their life, their offshore accounts are fatter than those of well known businessmen.

Sources said that there was the suspicion in the Western countries that some of those who have earned illicit funds could be willing tools and agents of terrorism.

It was also gathered that these Western governments were ready to seize assets of any of the targeted officials which could not be defended.

"There could be the likelihood of prosecutions at the end of the day but I guess they came early to inform the Nigerian authorities such that it will not be news to them when some Nigerians start facing serious times in the Western countries," a source said.

It was learnt that the Western countries are seriously seeking the intervention of FATF to isolate the channels by which the said officials moved huge sums from Nigeria in recent years.

"They decided to inform Nigeria early enough because they would require the cooperation of the Nigerian authorities," a source said.

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister, Mr. Gordon Brown, has written to Dr. Jonathan, expressing the support of his administration for the Nigerian leader and listing areas the two countries need to urgently collaborate.

The letter, dated February 26, 2010 and signed by the Prime Minister, stated the support of the UK's government to Jonathan's commitment to the fight against corruption and finding a lasting solution to the problems of the Niger Delta.

Brown welcomed the inaugural speech by Jonathan on February 9, stating that the UK was ready to continue to partner Nigeria on the path of progress.

Some of the priority areas the UK hoped Jonathan would concentrate on and further collaborate with the West included the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the Niger Delta, electoral reform, the fight against corruption and the fight against international terrorism.

The letter reads: "I am writing to congratulate you on taking up your new role as Acting President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

"As you know, we firmly believe that principles of abiding by the constitution, together with democratic values, non-violence and the rule of law are fundamental to resolving political and constitutional issues. I commend the efforts made by the Executive Council of the Federation, the National Assembly and the Executive to promote a peaceful and democratic solution to the recent uncertainty.

"The UK has long been a committed friend and partner of Nigeria and have continued to give strong and constructive support during the recent difficult weeks. I welcomed the commitments you made in your address to the nation and would strongly support you on the need for electoral reform and democra-tisation, tackling corruption and bringing peace and stability to the Niger Delta..

"We face joint challenges internationally, including in the fight against global terrorism. We remain committed to help you tackle poverty and make real progress towards the MDGs. I hope we can work together on these and other issues.

"I also look forward to working with you closely on the UN Security Council. We hope that you will be able to support strong UN action in response to Iran's failure to address international concerns over its nuclear programme and its breach of five UNSCRs.

"We remain committed to help you tackle poverty and make real progress towards the MDGs, in particular I hope we can work together to support the 1-Goal campaign and education for all in advance of the South African World Cup this year. I hope we can work together on these and other issues.

"We extend wishes for President Yar'Adua's recovery and I look forward to meeting you in the not too distant future.

Yours Sincerely,

Gordon Brown.

All does not seem to be well between the Nollywood screen diva, Bukky Wright and Fathia Balogun.

Both women are divorcees and perceived to be doing well in the movie industry of the Yoruba genre. we can also confirm that the 2 of them have penchant for running after married men for social economic security, which is the reason why they have perpetually remain single parents with many children.

Fathia Balogun

Our checks revealed that Fathia and Bukky are among the most sort-after actresses in Yoruba movie industry. Aside acting, they have both excelled in other endeavors. Years back, these two maintained a cordial relationship, especially, during the last election where Bukky Wright campaigned for the present Governor of Lagos State. The only actress this mother of 2 invited to join her in the project was Fathia Balogun and a lot of people envied their relationship. We gathered that few months after the election, the two Nollywood actresses started drifting apart, as most of their colleagues had already predicted. The story in town is that these two actresses are no longer on talking terms and they avoid each other like plaque but nobody can figure out the real cause of this cold war between these screen divas. A source confirmed that there is also a rift which borders on superiority between them and that there can never be two captains in the same ship, and also that Fathia Balogun chose her friends and not the other way round and due to her no-nonsense attitude, she can’t maintain a cordial relationship with Bukky Wright.

Bukky Wright

Meanwhile, it was gathered that Bukky Wright on her own is striving hard to stand out in everything and among her colleagues. She is equally a no-nonsense person and this has made things rather difficult for both of them. Also the envy and jealousy which has taken over the movie industry is also one of the factors why a lot of Nollywood actresses prefer to keep to themselves and make friends with people who are not in the entertainment industry as they are sure their secrets will be safe with such a person. Apart from the general reason these stars are not close, there is also the issue that Yoruba movie stars are believe to always want to know the source of each other’s success, and some even go as far as getting close to that same person in question and this at the end of the day causes misunderstanding among these stars. But this according to painstaking investigations is not the reason these two Nollywood actresses avoid each other.

We can however, disclose that the real issue for the unhealthy rivalry between them is that Fathia Balogun has been engaging in movie business with Corporate Picture boss, Rasaq Abdullahi, for years, as his (Corporate Picture) company sells her movies and Fathia also coordinates some movies and produce by this same marketer, and she has equally done business with a lot of other Nollywood stars in the industry, but lately, Bukky Wright has equally maintained a cordial relationship with the same marketer. Ever since he sold “Omotara Johnson”which was produced by Bukky Wright, people are beginning to feel, there is more to this sudden relationship and have seen it as an attempt by Bukky Wright to hi-jack corporate picture boss from Fathia. Also Fathia is said to be equally uncomfortable with the sudden relationship, this is said to be one of the reasons these two celebrities avoid each other like a plaque. Besides further checks have it that both are secret lovers to the successful movie marketer, and it was also gathered that the man at the centre of the storm has been satisfying them well both in cash and in kind.

It is on record that Fathia, controversially divorced her husband owing to the love affairsbetween him and the corporate picture boss. His estranged husband is also a popular actor, in the movie industry, who is know and addressed as Saheed Balogun
We gathered that Fathia had granted so many interview with the press where she vowed never to return to Saidi's life and that she's through with marriage. Industry source confirmed to that Bukky Wright initiated Fathia into lesbianism, and when the duo realised that same man was also going to bed with them, that grossly contributed to the impasse between them.

For Bukky Wright she cannot be particularly traced to any man as her husband despite the media overkill she got in the recent time that she remarried. Investigations have it that she can do anything for money as she is persistently linked with a Lagos based socialite and drug baron, Bolaji Saheed. It was disclosed that Bukky Wright had vowed that nothing on earth would make them break even has she moved into Bolaji’s residence in Magodo GRA, she is also most times, seen cruising around town in her guy's latest Lincoln Navigator Jeep which he bought some days after they broke up the last time until she later broke up with him when Bolaji accused him of promiscuity and lesbianism. Thereafter she hooked up with Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel. Gbenga Daniel gathered that he battered his First Lady mercilessly when the poor woman accused His Excellency of deep romance with Bukky Wright. The common saying in the lips of many now is that most Nollywood stars whether male or female are not responsible, their movies though may help to preach and teach morals in the society but they themselves unfortunately are not practising what they preach. Undoubtedly this assertion is not far from truth, as cases of immorality/promiscuity in the Nollywood has become one too many.

Service was brought to a halt yesterday at the St Paul Anglican Church, Sodubi, Abeokuta when thugs, armed with dangerous weapons, invaded the church because the priest was allegedly being too blunt in his preaching. Some of the words he used were said to have offended some highly placed individuals who attend the church. The crisis, which pitched a section led by a former senator and Baba ijo (father of the congregation), Femi Okunrounmu against those in support of the Venerable of the Church, Olumuyiwa Ilekoya, led to the suspension of service at the church as the worshipers who gathered for the first Sunday service of the new year scattered. NEXT gathered that the crisis started after Mr. Ilekoya was prevented from entering the church by the camp allegedly opposed to his preaching. The offence of the cleric was traced to his sermon on the New Year eve, which a source said was not well received by some church elders. Mr. Ilekoya, at the service, warned political leaders to mend their ways or face the wrath of God. It was said that shortly afterwards, a meeting was held where retaliatory measures were allegedly planned against the priest, to be executed in yesterday's service. In a twinkle, what started like child-play quickly degenerated with the emergence of thugs numbering about six who came to man the church entrance and prevent the cleric and other supposed opponents of the angry elders' faction from entering the church. Sensing danger, many worshippers left the church in droves, while the Venerable and some other elders of the church in his support relocated to Mission House, which is situated directly opposite the church. The group that gained control of the church was said to have ordered the Church Layreader, J.A Fatade, assisted by one Akinsola, to conduct the service which was attended by those members who had not run away. Mr. Okunrounmu, in his address to the church, told the congregation that Mr. Ilekoya was fond of raining curses while on the pulpit. Some of the members of the church are saddened by the ugly development, and expressed their shock at the incident. Some of those who spoke to NEXT accused the church authority of turning the church into a political theater because of their individual selfish interests. A political theater One of them said Mr. Ilekoya would be the fourth cleric of the church that the elders would fight because of the theme of his preaching. ‘Even if a Reverend preaches and the preaching affects you, what a reasonable person should do is to make amends,' said one of the disturbed worshippers, who pleaded anonymity because he was scared of being attacked. When approached by journalists at the church premises to react on the allegation that he sponsored thugs to disrupt the church service, Mr. Okunrounmu was furious. "How did you get to know what's happening here, who told you and who told you to come," he said. "This is church affairs and not press affairs. I don't want to comment further." Mr Ilekoya, the Venerable of the troubled church, also refused to comment, beyond saying he had reported the case to the Bishop, who will take necessary action on the matter.

Chinese government had agreed to issue exit visas to Nigerians resident in China illegally, to enable them leave the country without molestation, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports. The development is coming on the heels of street protests last week, over the death of two Nigerians who jumped out of a window to escape police clampdown of illegal migrants in Guangzhou Province. This is as Chinese Embassy in Abuja, has said it was yet to receive detailed information on the alleged death of a Nigerian, Emmanuel Egisimba, in the Chinese town of Guangzhou last Wednesday. The Embassy’s Spokesman, Mr Peng Yijun, said they are still waiting for confirmation and approval from Beijing before any reaction could be sent to that effect."There is an agreement in principle with the Chinese authority to issue exit visas to Nigerians who have overstayed without arresting and clamping them into jail,'' Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Ayo Olukanni, told NAN yesterday in Abuja.'This is what the Nigerian mission in China is currently negotiating. The mission is working with the Nigerian community to ensure that the list of those affected is compiled for necessary issuing of the visas,'' he said.Olukanni denied that two Nigerians died after jumping through a window.'No Nigerian died. The two people, Mr Ndubusisi Ohaneme sustained some injuries and had been discharged from the hospital, while Emmanuel Okoro, who was in intensive care, is now out and is in stable condition in the hospital,'' he said.According to Olukanni, nearly 20,000 Africans, including 5,000 Nigerians, reside in the Guangzhou Province, adding that in recent times, the Chinese had embarked on an exercise to `flush' out those staying illegally. He advised Nigerians against overstaying their visas to avoid harassment from the security personnel of their host countries. What nigerians face as written from ucboboy in chinaOver the years, Nigerians in China have been suffering untold hardship in the hands of the communist police of China, notwithstanding the deplomatic and trade relations between Nigeria and China. While other smaller african country's citizens are treated fairly one wonders why the citizens from the most populous nation in africa is being treated with levity in China. For example the Chinese authorities has been very considerate in renewin the visas of other african countries with the exception of Nigeria.Other african countries have been getting their resident permit with ease but the case of Nigerians is different.Even when a Nigerian is married to a Chinese Citizens according to the Chinese law the person is still being denied the one year resident permit that the Chinese government give to people in that category rather they will be renewing the person's visa every three months in the case of Nigerian Citizens. One therefore is pushed to ask if the then president Olusegun Obassanjo just signed a bi- lateral relation with Chinese government just to give millions of Chinese citizens free accsess to enter Nigeria so that they help and send our half dead industries to their graves. It is supprising that these Chinese citizens scattered all over Nigeria enjoy their freedom and carry on their businesses without any interference. It is absurd to hear that Nigerians in China do not enjoy any freedom at all and that there are many Nigerians that are being detained by the communist police in an underground cell.It is too bad that while many Nigerians wish to go about their legal businesses that the Chinese communist police are trying their best to frustrate their efforts especially in the commercial city of Guangzhou. The police in the commercial city of Gunagzhou is a carbon copy of Nigerian police in corruption. The difference is that while the Nigerian police collect a pea nut as bribe their Chinese counterpart collect a furtune.Right now in Gunagzhou Nigerians are paying between 10,000 to 13,000 RMB that is 175,000naira to 227,500 naira bribe just to get themselves released as soon they are arrested to avoid being thrown into the underground cell.Even as the Chinese government says that anybody that overstayed should pay a fine of 5000RMB they still cannot not allow Nigerians to pay the fine with ease and go home if they wish to go,rather they will handcuff the person and make him to suffer in the cell and still pay the fine. The wife of a Nigerian who have a resident permit can never claim through her husband's residency, rather if she wish to come to China she will apply and get a one month visiting visa within which she will leave. If not she will be there as illegal allien. Many Nigerian wives are in these category right now.The most annoying thing is that these Nigerians that are being denied the legal stay in China employ Chinese Citizens in their various offices and shops, where they pay them a huge sum ranging from 2000 to 3000RMB monthly that is 35,000 - 52,500 naira. An amount that most Nigerian graduates are not receiving as minimum wage. I was recently informed that among the multinational companies in Nigeria that Chinese are the least paid workers. It is disheartening that these Chinese will cheat us in their country and rob us of our due at home.In Nigeria Chinese are importers, hawkers, clearing agents even visa vendors. In China, most Nigerians hardly see breathing space to carry out their legitimate businesses. A situation that most Nigerians have been helpless about.I need a general advice on how to get this problem solved.Since Nigeria have her own laws, is there any means that we can get Mr Ude the boss of Nigerian immigeration to try and enforce our own laws? Can we unanimousely in this discussion group write pettition to Mr president about this situation.
